Chapter 110: Police Academy Arc Wild Police Story CASE. Wataru Date
Sometime later...
Amuro was looking out of the window into the night sky, a flute of rose wine in his hand when he felt two arms encircle his waist and a soft pressure against his back.
"I know about the time capsule you and the guys buried on the Academy grounds after graduation." Ami muttered, brushing her lips on his shoulder.
"Then, you should know we made a pact to only dig that up after ten years." Amuro reminded.
"Spoilsport." Ami pouted.
Seven years before present times, one month into the Police Academy...
"Onizuka's class, keep those hands moving." Date barked. "Let's get this place cleaned up quick so we can eat."
"Sorry, Matsuda." Furuya turned to the bombs expert. "Could you lend me your dustpan?"
"Sure thing." Matsuda nodded, handing the dustpan over. "But you'd better Rei-turn it later."
"Pathetic." Furuya teased. "Two points."
"Those two have become fast friends." aside, Morofushi remarked.
"As Jinpei-chan's best friend, I'm a little jealous." Hagiwara stated.
"Hagiwara-kun!" one of the female students from the next class called out. "Don't forget we've got a mixer on our next day off."
"You can count on me." Hagiwara assured.
"Make sure you bring a bunch of hot guys." the female student shouted. "Like that blonde foreigner over there."
"Then, you make sure you drag Mizuno-chan along." Hagiwara grinned.
"Who are you calling foreigner?" Date growled.
"Excuse me." the female student fled back the Academy building.
During lunchtime...
"Crap, I haven't prepared for English class." nearby Date group's table, a male classmate complained. "'I'm scared they'll call on me."
"Then let Furuya teach you." his lunch partner suggested. "Furuya, you look you'd be fluent in English."
"I'm all right." Furuya replied.
"Figures since you're blond and half." the male student teased. "I bet your English is better than the instructor's."
"Won't it be better to ask Mizuno?" the first male student wondered. "That girl's multilingual; she knows up to 75% of European languages."
"Multilingual nothing." his lunch partner added. "I heard she scored 255 on her last IQ test."
"That would be incorrect, gentlemen." a frosty cordial voice cut in, the Academy's 'Cool Beauty' had already finished her homemade salmon onigiri. "Add two more points to that number."
"257?" Hagiwara whistled. "Damn."
"Double damn." Matsuda nodded mutely.
"Don't make assumptions about people based on their appearance." Date snapped, grabbing the student by his shirt. "And," he pulled the toothpick out of the student's mouth and snapped it into half. "Quit trying to look cool by chewing on a toothpick. It makes me sick."
"Sorry..." the student gulped.
"As long as you understand." Date smiled. "Just be careful from now on."
"Team Leader," Hagiwara voiced once Date returned to his seat. "Have you got a crush on Furuya-chan? You were oddly defensive of him while we were cleaning, too."
"Obviously not." Date protested. "I've got a girlfriend."
"Huh?" the other four exclaimed.
"You don't have to be so shocked." Date twitched.
The next day...
Date's group was walking pass the training hall beside their class after kendo practice when Hagiwara's ears picked up a series of slapping echoing from the training hall and peeked in.
"Out of bounds!" the instructor shouted after Ami's female opponent was sent out of the training mat by a kick. "Winner, Mizuno!"
"She's a calculating one." Date instantly guessed what had happened. "She'd dodged and/or slapped away her opponent's attacks as she waited for an opening in her opponent's defenses; the spilt instant there's a crack, she attacks."
Later that night...
"Team Captain Date?" Furuya spotted Date sitting outside the Academy, he himself was heading out to the convenience store to buy a tube of toothpaste.
"Sorry about this afternoon at the dojo." Date apologized. "I went too far. My dad has nothing to do with you guys."
"Wasn't your father a police officer, too?" Furuya wondered.
"He was a patrol officer assigned to a police box." Date replied. "He was skinny and looked weak, but I respected him. Until that day my dad was off-duty; it happened right after my dad entered the store. An agitated man covered in someone else's blood came running in with a wooden sword and demanded money. Naturally, there was panic inside the store, but I wasn't scared. He was just a guy. I knew my dad, the police officer, would do something about it. I had total faith in him, but what I saw was …" he recalled how his father had knelt in front of the man to beg him to spare the other customers and how he had shouted that his father was a policeman. "The man swung his wooden sword down on my dad over and over. Eventually, we heard the sound of sirens, and the man left the convenience store. But my dad ended up in the hospital for a year. He ended up quitting the force because of his injuries. I learned later that the man was a gang member who lost a dispute and was looking for getaway money. Apparently, he caused injuries at another store after that. In other words, if my dad had been strong and arrested that man there, justice would be carried without producing a single victim."
In the convenience store...
"Yo, Mizuno, you here too?" Date instantly spotted the blue-haired woman at the feminine necessities section.
"Feminine necessities." Ami responded, picking five tampon boxes and two packs of pantyliners and dropping them into her shopping basket.
"Isn't that a bit much?" Furuya wondered.
"I prefer to stock up." Ami replied. "It's better than dropping by every two months. You mind grabbing a pack of sunflower seeds, Furuya?"
"Here." Furuya snatched up a bag of roasted sunflower seeds and dropped it into her basket.
Just then, a gunshot was heard as a pair of gangsters entered the store. "Nobody make a sound." the leader ordered.
"Okay, which one of you jinxed us?" Ami complained.
"Wasn't me." Furuya refuted.
"Not me." Date spoke.
"Come on, quit stalling." the lead gangster herded everyone to the back of the store. "Put your phones in the box.
"Furuya, Mizuno, there are two culprits." Date whispered. "If Furuya and I handle one of them each, we can take them down. I'll draw attention to the guy in the beanie. While he's distracted, you..."
"Date," Ami hissed. "You do realize there's a chance they have other accomplices, right?"
"She's got a point, Team Leader." Furuya agreed. "Besides, something's not right. Why aren't they stealing the money in the register and fleeing immediately?"
"You don't think..." Ami realized where Furuya's thought process had gone.
"Rescuing all the customers here right now is our priority." Date reminded. "We haven't yet been tied up. Now is our best chance."
"What are you guys whispering about?" the store clerk snarled, knocking Date to the ground with the butt of his rifle. "I'll kill you."
"Shall we get started?" another two gang members entered from the back door.
"Quit dragging your feet." the clerk then herded everyone, now wrists bound by cable ties and mouths taped, into the back of the store. "Walk quickly. Nobody better make a sound." he shut and locked the door.
"Nice thinking, Furuya." Date remarked, Furuya freed him by untying his shoelace and rubbing it against his zip tie.
"Help me untie the others." Furuya requested, Date pulling off his gag. It's locked after all. He mused, twisting the knob and finding it stuck.
"Too bad there isn't a keyhole on this side." Ami remarked.
"Anyway, what are the culprits after?" Date wondered.
"Probably the ATM cash resupply." Furuya surmised. "The resupply schedule is kept secret to prevent theft, but you can predict when it'll occur by checking the ATM's approximate balance on security images."
"Anyway, why aren't they concealing their faces?" Date frowned. "The clerk isn't even wearing sunglasses."
"They've no intention of leaving any witnesses alive once they're done." Ami replied.
"In any case, we need to come up with a way to get out of here." Date looked around.
"A switchboard." Furuya located the store's electric switchboard.
Opposite the store...
"Look over there." Morofushi spotted the convenience store's signboard flashing. "The convenience store's sign flashing, like Morse code."
In the convenience store...
"Yo." the disguised Matsuda, Hagiwara and Morofushi interrupted the buglers before they could attack the security guards bringing in the cash resupply.
"Seriously?" Hagiwara gawked. "Isn't that a rifle?"
"Don't be a wuss." Matsuda chided. "It's obviously a replica for filming movies or something."
"Are they really filming a movie?" one of Ami's Academy female classmates gushed.
"Guys, they said they wanted us as extras." Hagiwara called out.
"It's pretty noisy outside." Date heard the commotion. "What's going on?"
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Zero." Morofushi opened the door.
"Morofushi, what are you doing here?" Date was surprised.
"We saw the sign's Morse code and came to take down the culprits." Morofushi replied. "Not by force."
"But with numbers, huh?" Ami mused seeing her Academy schoolmates subdue the robbers. "Your class is really something."
"We're just doing what your dad tried to do." Matsuda stated.
"I was actually at the convenience store when your dad was beaten by that gangster." Hagiwara admitted. "You were probably too distracted by your bloodied dad to notice, but several of the man's accomplices entered the store after that. Your dad probably noticed his accomplices were in a nearby car. Even if he attempted to arrest him, if his accomplices had joined the fight, he couldn't have beaten them. If a fight broke out inside the store or if they barricaded themselves inside, the other customers could've been harmed. There were a bunch of us in there at the time, like me, a pregnant woman and an old man. Since the police arrived so quickly, you dad probably reported the crime and was trying to keep him from going deeper into the store until the police arrived. Therefore, Team Leader, your dad wasn't begging for his life, it was his cop heart that refused to see anyone get hurt that made him do it."
"Sorry to break up the bromance moment," Ami joked, revealing five acupuncture needles between her fingers to the surprised males. "Because of this, now I owe the five of you a favor each and I hate owing favors."
"In other words, whenever one of us need something from you, all we have to do is present the needle and you'll oblige." Hagiwara grinned, snatching up a needle. "Thanks, Mizuno-chan."
"You totally took that from 'Return of the Condor Heroes'." Furuya shook his head, claiming the last needle.
"Hey, it's a classic." Ami shrugged.
