A/N: Hello, everybody. I decided to put the A/N at the beginning of this chapter because I have some important things to tell you. First of all, sorry for not updating before but the whole past week I was really, really, and I mean REALLY sick. I could barely stand up from bed, fortunately, it wasn't that pandemic disease that it's haunting our world this year. And second, you asked for it, so I delivered, I modified Merida's dialogues so they are a little bit more understandable. It was hard for you to read them so it was for me to write them LOL. So that's gonna help both sides. Aaaaaaaand that's it. Here is Chapter 3. Chapter 4 will be ready in a matter of days. Stay tuned. See ya.
Chapter 3: Chasing to Little Dragons on the Hogwarts Express
Jack looked at the endless fields and hills the Hogwarts Express made its way through, coughing now and then since Hiccup's dragon had filled the compartment with smoke and even though the window had been opened to let the smoke escape, the little dragon was so furious that it wouldn't stop spitting smoke. Hiccup was staring at no specific point, saying nothing. Jack had no idea what was going on, he had been like this for about thirty minutes. He was about to ask if he was okay when Hiccup jumped out of his seat.
"OLIVIA AND EMILY PERKINS," he said triumphantly, pointing his finger at Jack, startling him. "Those are their names".
Jack had no idea what Hiccup was talking about. "Um… what?"
"Oh yes, sorry," he said, sitting back down. "When I was looking for Toothless I saw two girls who seemed familiar to me, but I couldn't remember from where. They are Olivia and Emily Perkins, daughters of Percival Perkins… a partner of my father in Romania".
"Oh... I see... Emm, good you manage to figure that out... I guess".
"I'm sorry, but whenever something comes into my head I can't stop thinking about it until I get it resolved".
Jack laughed. "I'm the opposite. If something is difficult for me, I stop doing it. I mean, what is the point of worrying about it?"
"I could do that from time to time".
Jack turned his attention to the cage on Hiccup's lap. His skinny friend's little dragon kept growling and biting the bars of the cage, but since Toothless had no teeth, he did nothing to them. Jack had little knowledge of dragons, but he knew that if Toothless had even one little tooth, it would be so sharp that it could break the bars of the cage.
"He has his temper, right?" Said Jack with a grimace. "I don't understand how so much anger can fit into such a tiny thing".
Hiccup, who seemed a bit embarrassed by his dragon's behavior, couldn't help but scratch his forehead and bow his head. "Yes, I know", he said. "He usually doesn't behave like this… Well, I guess it's because I don't normally keep him locked up in a cage".
Jack laughed. "Maybe", he said. "I don't know; I've never had a dragon. I told my mom to let me bring one to Hogwarts, but she said no. In fact, I'm surprised your dad let you have one".
Hiccup couldn't stop looking at his dragon. "I'm already wondering if I really want a dragon... Wait, what do you mean by that?"
"Well, after what happened in Romania", Jack explained. "Your dad was at the center of the conflict, leading others, taming dragons, watching his friends die. -when he said this he could see as if Hiccup was in pain- "and all that stuff. And besides dealing with the accusations that someone caused it, not an accident".
"Wait... they never said about the suspicions that someone may have caused it. How do you know about that?"
"My mom works in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Actually, she is the head of the department".
"Wow, it must be exciting to find out about things going on in the Wizarding World, right?"
Jack nodded energetically. "And the best of all is that—"
At that moment the door to their compartment opened and three girls appeared. Two were blondes, one with shiny golden hair tied in a ponytail, the other with rather straw-colored hair tied in a braid. In the middle of both a red-haired girl with the wildest hair, Jack has ever seen. Hiccup stood up immediately. Toothless's cage fell to the ground, clattering loudly.
"Ha'e ye seen a wee blue dragon around here?" The red-haired girl asked none of them both in particular.
Jack noticed Hiccup turn to see both blonde girls intermittently. "Hi, Emily", Hiccup said turning to the girl with the pretty blond hair and shifted her attention to the girl with the straw-colored hair. "H… h… hi, Astrid".
Jack realized the reason for that stuttering, he smiled to himself.
"Hi, Hiccup!" Said the girl with the pretty blonde hair energetically, peeking out from behind the hair of the red-haired girl, startling her.
"Hiccup," the straw-haired girl said by way of greeting, so indifferent even Jack felt how it hurt.
Ouch.
"Hey, A asked ye a question", the red-haired girl demanded, frowning, noticeably angry.
Both Jack and Hiccup turned to see the girl and Hiccup reddened so much that he had to look away. Jack didn't understand why.
"I'm sorry," Jack said. Just Hiccup's". He pointed to the empty dragon cage.
Wait, what?
"Hiccup! Where is Toothless?"
The alarm in Jack's tone of voice seemed to bring Hiccup out of his thoughts.
"In his ca… NO!"
"We asked in the wrong compartment", the redheaded girl said sarcastically.
"But it is your fault!" Hiccup countered, bending down to pick up his dragon cage. Moron!
"What did ye say, airy-fairy? A'm not the one who just lost her dragon in front of her".
"But you're looking for one!"
"But A didn't lose it!"
Jack intervened. "What do you think if we better go find them?"
"Yeah, we could do it together," Emily added.
Hiccup and the redheaded girl glared at each other for a few seconds. "Okay", they said in unison.
The five of them left the compartment. At first, they thought they would find the dragons in that same carriage. But to their surprise, they realized that dragons knew how to open doors. They didn't find them in that carriage, nor the next one, nor the next one. Jack was already doubting that it was a good idea. The red-haired girl opened each compartment without caring who was inside asking the same question. "Ha'e ya seen two wee dragons? One black and the other blue".
Jack could hear Hiccup trying to strike up a conversation with Astrid.
"So... how did Stormfly get away from you?"
"Her spines are sharp enough now and she broke the bars of her cage".
"Oh, I see. You will need one of the reinforced ones..."
"Yes, I know".
Stop trying, mate.
They went to the next carriage and there they saw them, the two dragons chasing each other, spitting smoke and hitting each other with their tails. When they noticed the children, the dragons tried to escape. The children ran after them. Jack watched as Hiccup's dragon used its legs to try to open a compartment door, succeeding. They heard a startle come out of the compartment as they reached it.
"Don't let them escape!" The red-haired girl screamed.
The five of them rushed towards the door at the same time, jostling each other to enter. Jack felt an elbow sink into his ribs, causing him to give up his attempt. From outside the compartment, as he tried to catch his breath, he saw the two girls occupying the compartment. And, if he had already managed to catch his breath, the girl with the almost white hair made him lose it again. She was the prettiest girl Jack had ever seen in his young life. She looked scared to death but despite that… Jack couldn't stop looking into those sea-blue eyes. He had a funny feeling in his stomach, but it didn't bother him at all. He actually liked it.
"Shut yer mouth, ye're going to drool." The red-haired girl's voice startled him. He didn't even notice when the rest of the kids gave up going all together into the compartment.
"Where are the dragons?" Jack asked, ignoring the redhead's comment.
"We caught the airy-fairy's one, but Astrid's slipped between our legs. The blondie is going to help us look for it".
Jack watched as the rest rubbed their ribs and the blond girl introducing herself to everyone.
"What about the other girl? She is not going to help us?"
"Yer girlfriend didn't want to come. She preferred to help us by staying with Toothless as we found Stormfly".
"What do you mean by that, frizzy hair?"
"Oh, please, ye just needed to take a picture of the other girl. Ye stayed gone for several minutes".
"That is not true!"
"It is, Jack", Hiccup said.
"Thanks, mate. Better stop harassing me, and let's go find those elusive dragons".
And having said this, he started walking, he could hear how the red-haired girl laughed. Before leaving the carriage, he turned to see the compartment of the blue-eyed girl. She was at the door, with Toothless in her arms. Strangely the dragon was very comfortable in the girl's arms, already sleeping. Jack noticed how she smiled at him before passing to the next carriage.
Rapunzel already had enough of looking for a compartment. She had enough of having her feet stepped on, of being elbowed when she passed by someone in the aisle, of everybody who saw her with strange faces for being crying or for going barefoot. So she had decided that it would be best to stay in the aisle. And there she was, sitting in the aisle hugging her legs, leaning against the wall, whimpering and sniffing.
She prepared for months to separate from her parents. To begin to become independent. While shopping for her school supplies a few months ago she was excited, seeing the picturesque essence of Diagon Alley, very different from the magical neighborhood in Germany, had made her think that attending a magic school so far from her native country would be fun. A week before the day she would attend Hogwarts she began to feel like if something was twisting in her stomach. On the night of August 30, she couldn't sleep. And when the sun came up she wouldn't stop crying, it no longer seemed such a good idea to be away from her parents for almost a year.
If only there had been no problems related to her hair a few years ago she could have gone to a school closer to home, from her parents, but happened what happened and her parents decided that it would be best for her to go to Hogwarts. She hid her head between her knees and let out a few tears.
"Are you alright?" Asked a voice sweetly.
Punzie looked up and saw a boy a little older than her, perhaps from second or third year, with black hair and a face that seemed familiar. He wore the Hogwarts robe with the details that corresponded to the house that belonged in green, a Slytherin.
"Yes, I am".
"Then why are you crying? I doubt it's because everything is alright".
"I just can't find a compartment to sit in", she lied… in half.
"Oh, I see", the boy answered calmly. "You're a first-year, right?"
Rapunzel nodded.
"I know your first trip on the Hogwarts Express can be difficult or scary, but trust me, it all works out in the end." The boy held out his hand. "Come on, get up. What's your name?"
Punzie took his hand and stood up. "Thank you," she told him, wiping her tears. "My name is Rapunzel, like..."
"The muggle fairy tale. Yes, I know it. My name is Albus".
That is why he looked familiar to Punzie!
"I'd tell you to come with us, but they like their privacy", Albus said, pointing to the back of the carriage, where another Slytherin boy and a red-haired Gryffindor girl seemed to be waiting for him.
"Come on, man", said the other boy, who was blond, "I want to find a compartment before we get to Hogsmeade station."
"I'm coming! Just wait for a second, Scorpius". Albus turned to Punzie. "See you, hope you feel better".
Punzie nodded, trying to smile. "Thanks, again".
The boy trotted off to join his friends and before changing carriages, Albus turned. "By the way, in the next carriage, a girl is sitting alone. I think she's a first-year too. You could sit with her. Who knows? You two may end up being friends. She has almost white hair, you are sure to find her quickly". And having said this, he said goodbye to her, waving his hand, and went to the next carriage.
Punzie waved his hand for a moment in the middle of the carriage aisle, until she caught what Albus had said. She went to the next carriage and quickly found the girl with almost white hair. She hesitated a bit before entering. She wiped away some of the tears that were still coming out with the sleeve of her dress, sniffed at her snot, and opened the door.
The white-haired girl looked at her strangely, her eyes straying to her bare feet.
"Can I… can I…?" Punzie forced herself to stop babbling. "Can I sit here?"
The girl with the almost white hair hesitated for a moment, but finally said, "Sure."
"Thank you!"
Punzie had to stand on the seat of the compartment to be able to accommodate her things. When she finally sat down, she didn't know what to say and noticed that the other girl didn't either.
The best step to getting to know each other is to start by the name, she heard sometime somewhere.
"My name is Rapunzel," she said, "like the Muggle fairy tale. But you can call me Punzie".
"My name is Elsa", the other girl replied with a smile, "but you can call me Elsa."
Both girls laughed.
They talked some more. Rapunzel was about to tell her why she was barefoot, but suddenly there was a great commotion coming from the hall and the door to her compartment suddenly opened, surprising the girls. Half a dozen boys and girls tried to enter the compartment, chasing two little dragons.
The two dragons jumped back and forth inside the compartment while the children tried to get in, nudging each other. Punzie could hear the red-haired girl say some things she couldn't understand. She saw how a boy in a blue hoodie left the door and how he stared at Elsa with his mouth open.
"Could ye two help?" Said the red-haired girl. Elsa bent down and took the black dragon between her hands, the dragon did not protest at all and snuggled into the girl's arms. Punzie tried to do the same with the blue dragon, but it slipped into her arms and between the kids' legs, running down the aisle.
"Oh, it can't be!" The red-haired girl screamed, frustrated. "Get off me now."
The rest of the children went out into the hall, rubbing their ribs. The skinny boy with brown hair came over to thank Elsa for catching her dragon. The girl with the straw-like hair was complaining that her dragon had escaped, while the other blonde girl tried to calm her down.
"You need help?" Punzie asked.
"A think there are already too many o' us", the red-haired girl replied.
"I could be of help", Punzie pleaded. Suddenly, she thought that if she helped them find the missing dragon, she could befriend them. And Elsa too.
"The dragon escaped between yer hands". The red-haired girl seemed determined that Punzie would not help.
"And you between your legs".
"Shut up, airy-fairy".
After glaring at the red-haired girl, the skinny boy turned to Punzie. "You can help us".
Punzie grinned from ear to ear.
"Oh whatever", the red-haired girl said and turned to the boy with the blue hoodie, who had been in some kind of trance for a long time.
"Shut yer mouth, ye're going to drool."
Punzie turned to Elsa. "Don't you want to come too?"
Elsa hesitated a moment "I think I better take care of this one" she said, lifting the little black dragon, who had already fallen asleep in the girl's arms.
"Alright", Punzie muttered. "I'll be back soon".
Elsa watched as Punzie went out of the compartment and introduced herself to the other children. She watched Punzie go along with the others while the boy in the blue hoodie and the red-haired girl argued. Elsa noticed how the boy turned to see her before moving on to the next carriage. The boy smiled at her and, not knowing why Elsa returned the gesture.
She was left alone in the compartment until night had fallen, the little black dragon asleep on her lap. Feeling the warmth that the dragon emanated made her relax, as she ran her hand over the rough black scales of the dragon.
How is it that such a quiet little creature caused them so much trouble? She thought.
She had liked being alone with the little dragon for most of the trip. It hadn't occurred to her to have a pet at Hogwarts, and she wasn't sure if Minerva was going to let her have one, but now, while petting the dragon, she thought that perhaps a quiet pet, such as a cat or an owl, would be an ideal choice.
She used the time she had alone to put on her Hogwarts uniform. Black in its entirety. She knew that the tie, sweater, and tunic details would change their color as soon as she was sent to one of the Four Houses. She imagined all the possibilities. The scarlet red and yellow of Gryffindor, the blue and bronze of Ravenclaw, the yellow and black of Hufflepuff, and, briefly, the emerald green and silver of Slytherin.
While she was deep in thought, the rest of the children came back with the blue dragon tucked into a cage, it looked knocked out. The red-haired girl looked more disheveled than ever and the boy in the blue hoodie had an unfriendly face. They both appeared to be covered in pumpkin, frosting, and chocolate. Elsa handed the dragon to the skinny boy and he thanked her. The children left and again Elsa and Punzie were left alone.
"What happened to those two?" She asked Punzie once they were alone.
"Jack and Merida?" said Punzie, she was having a fierce battle with her jumper, which had gotten stuck in her head and her voice was barely audible. "The candy trolley fell over them".
"What? How?"
"They were chasing Astrid's dragon and didn't see the trolley in front of them". Now Punzie was having a hard time putting on her tie. "They bumped into him and filled the entire aisle with pumpkin, cakes, chocolate frogs, and everything else. Elsa thought that she was lucky to have bought a couple of candies before the accident".
Elsa came over to help Punzie tie her tie. "I hope they caught the dragon then."
"Well, yes and no. A fourth-year girl was shopping for pumpkin pastries when Jack and Merida pulled the whole trolley and she helped us. She caught it and slept it in seconds".
"Seriously? Wow!"
"Yep, she took something green from one of the pockets of her tunic, it was like grass, she crouched down at the dragon's height and began to make strange sounds with her mouth, like those of a dragon". Punzie's tie was already made, she just needed her robe. "Astrid's dragon was getting closer to her and when it was close enough, the girl scratched its neck and the dragon fell completely asleep.
"Wow!"
"And then she lectured Hiccup and Astrid about it because they always have to bring those kinds of herbs when working with dragons, to buy the right cages for each type of dragon and a lot of other things". In the end, she told them that they will learn that while they have their special dragon care class or something.
"I suppose they deserved that sermon."
"I suppose".
"And what happened to the candy trolley?"
"Well it was a total loss, so Jack and Merida had to pay for everything. Well, Jack had to pay it all, Merida had no money. Not a single knut".
"Well, that does seem a bit unfair."
"Yes I know. Jack told Merida that she owed him a lot".
When Punzie was in full uniform, both girls sat waiting for the arrival at Hogsmeade Station. Outside it was already dark and the slight chill of autumn was beginning to be felt. That feeling was very familiar to Elsa as if years ago she had been on a similar journey. She was having the feeling of remembering an auburn-haired girl when a voice was heard throughout the train
"ATTENTION, WE WILL BE GETTING TO THE HOGSMEADE STATION IN LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES!" ALL STUDENTS MUST BE READY! PLEASE LEAVE ALL YOUR LUGGAGE AND PETS ON THE TRAIN! SOMEONE ELSE WILL CARRY THEM FOR YOU!"
Elsa and Punzie hurried out into the hallway that was already crammed with students of all ages. The train reached its destination and everyone jostled down. Suddenly a huge figure (which Elsa recognized immediately) with a thick beard and gray hair began to call out to the first-years.
When they were all gathered, Hagrid led them down a narrow path to a huge lake. The vast majority, if not all, of the children, were amazed to see the majesty of Hogwarts Castle, which towers loomed across the lake. Hagrid commanded the kids to get into the boats already waiting for them on the lakeshore. Elsa and Punzie and ended up in a boat with the two boys chasing the dragons on the train. Jack and... Hiccup. That's what their names are, Elsa thought. The boy in the blue hoodie (now wearing his robe) looked very nervous.
"Hello again", said Punzie.
Hiccup waved back, but the other one said nothing.
They moved under a cliff to a very dark tunnel, below the castle. Despite the darkness, Elsa noticed how Jack had a piece of pumpkin pastry on his head, she was about to take it off when Hagrid ordered them to get off the boats. They climbed some stone stairs to a huge oak door. Hagrid hit her several times until a beautiful young witch opened the door. Elsa recognized her right away, Flee Hummings.
"Here you have them, Professor Hummings, the first-years".
"Thank you, Hagrid. I'll take care from now on".
Flee led the children through the hall and into a small room that connected to the Great Hall. There, Flee welcomed them and explained a little about the four Hogwarts houses and how they were selected in front of the entire school. When she finished, she looked at all the students. When Elsa and Flee's eyes crossed, Flee smiled broadly at her, Elsa did the same.
"Now form a line and follow me".
Between pushes and elbows going to her ribs, Elsa ended up in the middle of the line, with Punzie in front of her.
Until that moment, Elsa had not thought about what the selection ceremony would be like, despite having spent so many years at Hogwarts, there were things that she was not aware of. Because Minerva wanted her to "live the experience." That made Elsa angry.
As soon as they entered the Great Hall, Elsa could feel how all the eyes of the older students were fixed on them, for some reason she felt that she was the one they were looking at the most. In front of all the students he could see how Flee had put a stool and on it, an ugly, gnawed, and old wizards' hat. Suddenly, the hat moved and began to sing. Elsa's jaw dropped as the hat sang about the four Hogwarts houses and the qualities of the students sent to each. When he was done, all the older students applauded, some first-years did the same.
"And now", Flee announced, addressing to the first-years as she unrolled a long piece of parchment, "I'll name you one by one." As soon as you hear your name, come forward, and put on the hat. So he will tell you which house you belong to".
As simple as that? Elsa was already preparing to cast an enchantment or for an exam on the most famous magicians in history. But she thought that simply putting on a hat was the best thing that could have happened to her.
"Arendelle, Elsa!"
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she barely listened when Flee called her name.
Taking a deep breath, Elsa went out of the line.
"Good luck" whispered Punzie, when Elsa passed next to her.
Elsa sat on the stool and put on the sorting hat.
