Chapter 113: Police Academy Arc Wild Police Story CASE. Hagiwara Kenji
Seven years earlier, several months since the Police Academy started...
"Let's get this started." Date declared, he and his group of Academy buddies were at a mixed gathering hosted by Hagiwara.
"Cheers!" everyone clinked their beer glasses.
"Nothing beats free beer." Date downed his beer in one gulp.
"Why do you mean by free beer?" Matsuda deathpanned.
"Hagiwara didn't tell you?" Date mused. "He said he'd pay for our drinks if we attend this mixer with girls from Mizuno's class so there'd be enough guys."
"And that's why you're here even though you have a girlfriend?" Matsuda scoffed. "And what's Mizuno doing here?" he cast a disinterested look at the silent woman. "I thought this kind of function isn't your thing."
"It still isn't." Ami dabbed a salmon slice in soy sauce and bit into it. "Hagiwara called in the favor; otherwise, I'll still be working on my art piece for the Autumn Cultural Festival. Seems to me the organizer isn't even here."
"Date-kun has a girlfriend?" Abe Kou, who was seated opposite Date gushed.
"You can tell." Aoki Manami, her best friend, nodded.
"What about you, Matsuda-kun?" Abe turned to Matsuda. "You don't, do you?" she stammered at Matsuda's glare.
"You can tell." Aoki agreed.
"Hiro." Furuya took a bite of the appetizer. "This appetizer is really good."
"Even if I could make this, I'll show you sometime." Morofushi offered. "After all, you don't know the first thing about cooking."
"Sorry about that." Furuya twitched.
"Morofushi-kun, teach me." Watanabe Rie pressed.
"I just want Furuya-kun to cook for me, even if he sucks at it." Sano Sayuri giggled.
"Don't bother." Matsuda waved. "Zero's interest in women other than older lady doctors is zero."
"Matsuda-kun, keep saying unkind things and I'll arrest you." Watanabe pouted.
"That sounds fun." Matsuda grinned.
"Sorry, I'm late." Hagiwara entered the booked room. "There was this old woman stuck on the long steps on the way here. After carrying her up the steps, she said she dropped the very lucky fortune she just got at the shrine. We tried looking for it, but couldn't find it, so we went back to the shrine to buy fortunes until we got another very lucky one and that brings up to now."
"Wow." the girls, minus Ami, gushed. "You're so nice."
"It wasn't an old woman, but an old man, right?" Ami drawled, sipping her sake cup. Shooting the flirtatious cadet a knowing look, she smirked. "You don't lie to a Tokyo U medical grad, Hagiwara-chan."
"You've had too much to drink." Sano chided Watanabe who downed her sake cup after the food was eaten.
Ami sighed, "Looks like I'll have to prepare my hangover remedy first thing tomorrow."
"Should we go karaoke next?" Hagiwara suggested.
"Bets on him dominating the singing?" Ami joked.
"Sucker bet." the other four men chorused.
On the streets...
"As I expected, Hagi's getting all the attention." Matsuda complained.
"Looks like it." Furuya agreed.
"Were you guys even expecting anything else from him?" Ami tsked.
"Excuse me." a middle-aged man stopped Morofushi. "Do you know that tall man over there?" he pointed to Hagiwara. "Not only did he carry me earlier, he even bought me some fortunes. Could you thank me for me, please?"
"Hagi doesn't lie about that kind of thing." Matsuda explained. "Although he probably called the old dude he helped an old lady because he knew it would be received better. I expected nothing less from the second coming of Kisaki Eri, huh, Mizuno-chan?" he teased.
Morofushi then spotted a little girl with twin pigtails walking by with her parents and he remembered attending the funeral of a similarly-aged female classmate.
"What's wrong, Hiro?" Furuya caught Morofushi's attention.
"We'll leave you behind." Matsuda called out.
After the karaoke session...
"Someone'd better get him a cough lozenge or two." Ami remarked, nodding towards Hagiwara as the group returned back to the police academy. "He'd most likely end up with a very bad sore throat tomorrow morning."
"She's got a point." Matsuda agreed.
