Sunday evening.
Hanna enters Lucas' New York apartment, dragging the carry-on suitcase she took with her to Rosewood for the weekend. "Soooo, how's your weekend been?" She asks, amused. "Any news to share with me?"
Lucas grins back from the couch, pausing the movie he's watching.
Hanna "Oh my god, you got lucky. I can tell by your face." She teases him.
Lucas rolls his eyes but doesn't deny it.
Hanna laughs.
Lucas "I tried to copy your chicken parmesan… Thank god I started to cook early because I completely messed it up. It was disgusting. I had the chance to throw it away before she even arrived, so I just ordered something else."
Hanna smiles. "That's one of Caleb's specialties… I just made it the other day because I was feeling a little homesick. But it's his recipe, not mine. Anyway, I guess you did quite well seducing her in some other way if your date went as well as your face shows."
Lucas "Yeah… I guess things just flow pretty smoothly between us. I don't have to make an effort to seem interesting around her."
Hanna "I'm glad you found someone you feel so comfortable with, Lucas. I'm looking forward to meeting her." She says, giving him another smile. "Well, I'll go to bed… I have a Pilates class tomorrow morning."
Lucas "Did you have dinner yet? There's some pizza in the fridge."
Hanna "Yeah, I grabbed a sandwich. Thanks!" She responds before heading into her room.
/
Later on.
Hanna is lying in her bed when she finally picks up her phone and gives Caleb that long-awaited call.
Caleb "Hey! Finally!"
Hanna smiles. "Hey…"
Caleb "I thought you'd never call…"
Hanna "I did say I would."
Caleb "Took your time, though."
Hanna "But I did, didn't I?
Caleb "Uh huh… How was your day?"
Hanna "Boring… just a lazy Sunday. I only got back to New York a little while ago. Yours?"
Caleb "It was okay… I took Chocolate in my car, and we went for a hike in the woods."
Hanna "I'm sure he enjoyed himself."
Caleb "Yeah, he did…"
There's a moment of silence until Caleb changes the subject.
Caleb "Toby mentioned Spencer was over the moon with the wedding dress you made for her."
Hanna "Yeah, she looks stunning in it, Caleb… It still needs a few adjustments, but I'm really happy and relieved that she liked it so much. I wanted it to be perfect for her, you know? I'm glad I could create something special for her. Toby will die of love when he sees her walking down the aisle."
Caleb "Yeah, I'm sure he will." He sighs. "Can I ask you something?"
Hanna "About?"
Caleb "Us… or you, actually."
Hanna "You can ask, but I will only answer if I have a clear response to give you."
Caleb "Are you mad at me?"
Hanna "No. I was. But not anymore."
Caleb "Then why aren't you talking to me?"
Hanna "What do you mean? We are talking, aren't we?"
Caleb "You know what I mean. You are just keeping our conversations… as small talks…"
Hanna "I just need some more time. I'm working on some things… I'm figuring things out."
Caleb "Do I need to worry? I mean…" He sighs again. "In which situation are we standing right now? Are we still on a break? Or what?"
Hanna "Yes, we are still on a break. Why do you ask? I don't understand you."
Caleb "Nothing, I just wanted to know if I needed to get in my car and drive all the way to New York right now not to lose you. Because this is starting to feel like more than just a break…"
Hanna "No, you don't need to do that, Caleb. I still need some space, that's all."
Caleb "Okay." He says, sounding unsure.
Hanna "Really. You have nothing to worry about." She reassures him.
Caleb "Okay. Thanks for clearing that for me."
Another silence follows, and Hanna changes the subject this time.
Hanna "What about you? Have you bought a suit for Spencer's and Toby's wedding?"
Caleb "Not yet…"
Hanna "Don't forget. You're the best man."
Caleb "Yeah, I know. It's just that picking out formal outfits isn't really my forte."
And another pause falls into their conversation.
Hanna "Well… I'll go to sleep. I have a long day tomorrow."
Caleb "Okay."
Hanna "I'll call you tomorrow."
Caleb smiles. "Tomorrow?"
Hanna "Yeah."
Caleb "Great. Just don't leave me hanging. I'll be waiting."
Hanna "I won't. Good night, Caleb."
Caleb "Night, Han."
/
Next evening.
Hanna is relaxing on Lucas' couch, a glass of wine in her hand, when she calls Caleb again.
Caleb "Hey there!"
Hanna chuckles. "You didn't even let the phone ring once, did you?"
Caleb "Told you I'd be waiting."
Hanna grins.
Caleb "What are you up to?"
Hanna "Just having some wine… I'm alone. Lucas went on a date."
Caleb "Really?"
Hanna "Yeah, he's been seeing this girl from that video game he invested in since last week. Seems it's getting pretty serious. This is the third time they've gone out in less than a week."
Caleb "Good for him, then."
Hanna "Yeah, I'm happy he's happy."
Caleb "Have you met her yet?"
Hanna chuckles. "Not yet… I keep asking, but Lucas is keeping her in the shadows for now. I only know her name, Lizzie. He won't even show me a picture of her. Can you believe he removed me from IG so I couldn't see his followers and followings?"
Caleb smiles, amused, picturing Hanna trying to gather information about this mysterious girl. "You're just too impatient. Give him a break, Han."
Hanna "But he's being too secretive about her. And the more secretive he is, the more intrigued I get. I'm starting to believe this girl's got three eyes or something like that."
Caleb chuckles. "Lucas is just too reserved. I'm sure he'll introduce her to you when he's ready."
Hanna "What about you? What are you up to?"
Caleb "Not much… I was just doing the laundry… right now, I'm sitting on the floor next to the washer, rubbing Chocolate's tummy."
Hanna "Oh, give him a kiss from me."
Caleb "Are you coming to Rosewood this weekend?"
Hanna "Nope… I'll just stay here. I spent last weekend there because I wanted to give Lucas some privacy here, now that he's seeing this girl. But he told me today she has her own apartment. She actually invited him over tonight, so… they have somewhere else to… do their things."
Caleb chuckles.
Hanna "I don't know why, but I can't picture Lucas having sex… it's like… I don't know. I don't have a brother, but if I had one, I guess this is how I'd feel about it."
Caleb laughs.
Hanna "Anyway, I'll just stay here this weekend. I need to get a dress for Spencer's wedding too. I'll take the chance to do that on Saturday. I don't have too much time during the week now. Thank god she's not making us wear matching dresses. She only asked us to be dressed in gold."
Caleb "I thought you would just wear one of your dresses…"
Hanna "No… I'll buy one. Lisa and Vanessa are still working hard to keep my store stocked. I won't be taking a dress for myself. Besides, there are so many cool stores here. I'm sure I'll find something nice to wear."
Caleb "You could put on the most hideous dress in New York, and it'd still look good on you."
Hanna chuckles. "Well, I hope to find something better than New York's most hideous dress for the wedding, but thanks…"
Caleb smiles.
Hanna "What are you having for dinner?"
Caleb "I've no idea… I guess I'll just see what I have in the fridge and improvise a quick meal. I don't feel like cooking… you?"
Hanna "I'm not feeling like making dinner either… there's a little store a couple of blocks away from here that has a very good salad bar and they are open 24/7. I'll just buy a salad there. I go there pretty often… Neither I nor Lucas are much for cooking."
Caleb "Well, maybe I could go there sometime and make dinner for you both…" He takes the chance to make a move.
Hanna smiles. "Don't push it."
Caleb "Why? I just offered to cook."
Hanna "Yeah… we're good, don't worry."
Caleb "So, have you two made any new progress with the store? Or the workshop? Or that other third-party company that will be making your other dresses?"
Hanna "Nope, nope, and nope…" She answers his three questions. "None of the places for rent we went to check out for my workshop covered our needs, so we are still searching. We haven't started looking for a place for the store yet, but Lucas's assistant has arranged some appointments for us to check out some places this Thursday and Friday… and Lucas is still trying to decide between a company in Turkey and another one in China for the mass-produced new line, but anyway, once he makes his choice, we are visiting the factories before signing a contract or making any kind of legal arrangements… He wants me to check the quality myself."
Caleb "Oh, so you get to go to Turkey or China, huh? Sounds interesting…"
Hanna "Yeah! I'm excited… I'm hoping for China. But any will be interesting to visit…"
Caleb "Why China?"
Hanna "I don't know, it sounds like a whole another world, so different… I'm just curious. Well, Turkey too."
Caleb "Yeah, either one would be an interesting place to visit."
Hanna "Well, I'll leave you now. I'll go get that salad because I'm getting hungry already."
Caleb "Already? We barely talked…" He complains.
Hanna "I'll call you again soon."
Caleb "And when would that be?"
Hanna "Soon…"
Caleb "Can't I just call you?"
Hanna "Okay."
Caleb "Really?"
Hanna "Mhmm."
Caleb grins. "Great. I'll call you… soon."
Hanna chuckles. "What's 'soon' to you?"
Caleb "I'd call you right after hanging up… but I'll try to wait until tomorrow."
Hanna "Tomorrow sounds good."
Caleb smiles again.
Hanna "Goodnight."
Caleb "Goodnight, Han."
Hanna ends the call with a smile on her face. They just had a complete conversation over the phone without a single moment of awkward silence.
/
The next evening, Hanna comfortably lies on the couch, drawing a new design in her sketchbook. She keeps her phone nearby, but as time passes, there's no sign of Caleb. At some point, she stands up, not in the mood to make dinner, prepares herself an avocado toast, and returns to the couch. She manages to wash the dish she used, change into her pajamas, brush her teeth, and even complete her skincare routine before her phone finally rings.
Hanna "Hey… I was starting to think you forgot to call me." She answers while heading to her bed.
Caleb chuckles. "You kidding? I've been waiting all day long to talk to you."
Hanna lifts the covers and gets into bed. "Doesn't seem so."
Caleb smiles. "I called you later on purpose so you wouldn't hang up on me with the excuse of going to grab something for dinner."
Hanna "Well, now I don't have too much time anyway because I have to go to bed early."
Caleb "Okay, I'm sorry… I just-"
Hanna interrupts. "It's okay. I guess I can stay up a bit later to talk to you." She realizes she's being too hard. "I'm sorry, I'm just feeling a little down today. It's not you. I was actually looking forward to talking to you."
Caleb "What's going on?"
Hanna "Anna called me. Her wrist healed very well, and she said she's ready to go back to work in a couple of weeks, which is great… but then I had to call Vanessa and tell her that these will be her last two weeks. She knew all along that this was only a replacement, but she got so sad… and it made me sad too."
Caleb "I'm sorry to hear that, Han. But that's how temporary positions work…"
Hanna "I know. But still, I wish I could keep both of them. But it wasn't easy to convince Lucas to let me keep my workshop there in Rosewood and two seamstress positions. He wanted me to choose between Lisa and Anna. So there's no way he'll let me keep Vanessa as well."
Caleb "I agree with Lucas, Han. It's a business, after all. The whole point is making the most money by investing only what is necessary, and keeping employees only because you've got attached to them goes against it. But anyway, this is your business. You can still make your own decisions."
Hanna "Yeah, I know. But it doesn't feel right. I mean, I asked Lucas for his help because I'm a complete mess managing my business. I won't go against his advice."
Caleb "Uh huh… I know it's not easy, but you have to let Vanessa go."
Hanna "Yeah… I guess I'll have to harden my heart a bit if I want to be a successful businesswoman." She chuckles. "I'll have to become colder."
Caleb "No, I think you shouldn't. I think your heart is perfectly right for this. You care about your employees and make them feel appreciated. They respect you, they trust you. That's very important too. They are the ones who have your back now that you are in New York."
Hanna's eyes get glassy upon hearing such beautiful words from Caleb.
Caleb "You just need to get used to making decisions that might not be what your heart tells you to do. But it doesn't make you a bad person. Or cold. You have to prioritize your business and make sensible choices."
Hanna "Thank you, Caleb. That's exactly what I needed to hear." She lets out a deep breath.
Caleb "Thank you for talking to me."
Hanna smiles. "How about your day, though? Anything to share with me?"
Caleb "Not much… I didn't go to the office today, I worked from home. Ali is going back to work, and they got a babysitter for the twins, so Emily is working from home for a few days to make sure everything is okay. So I didn't see the point of going to the office today, we didn't have any meetings there. I stayed home with Chocolate."
Hanna "Ali is going back to work? That's great. We were talking the other day, and she mentioned she wanted to go back to teaching."
Caleb "Yeah, she's going back to Rosewood High."
Hanna "Is Chocolate there with you right now?"
Caleb "Yep, he's right next to me here on the couch."
Hanna "Can I talk to him? Put your phone on speaker."
Caleb "Sure… There you go."
Hanna "Hi, Chocolate! Hey, baby!"
Caleb chuckles. "He sat up."
Hanna "Chocolate, what's up, baby?"
Caleb "He's looking everywhere, he doesn't realize your voice comes from the phone… maybe we should try with a video call." He turns off the speaker mode on his phone.
Hanna "No way. I've already removed my makeup, and my hair is a complete mess. I'm already in bed."
Caleb chuckles. "I didn't mean right now… but I've seen you like that many times, and you still look pretty."
Hanna smiles.
Caleb "Wanna go to sleep now? I can call you tomorrow… earlier."
Hanna "No, it's okay. Let's talk a little longer."
Caleb smiles. "Do you have to get up early tomorrow?"
Hanna "Yeah… super early. I'm taking a Pilates class before starting my day. Doing it in the morning is actually good because I don't end up missing classes like I did before when I used to take them after work. And I'm going three times a week, which seemed impossible before."
Caleb "That's great, Han. I'm glad you could find a way to have some time to yourself."
Hanna yawns. "What about you? Did you go back to doing some workout after your surgery?"
Caleb "Yeah, I went back to running. Didn't go back to the gym, though. I was planning on doing it after my trip, but now I don't feel like going back. So I'm just running and going on walks with Chocolate for now."
Hanna "I'm glad you have the time to walk him. I never looked for another walker after Zeth left for college."
Caleb "We don't need another walker for now. I enjoy walking him myself. Helps to clear my mind."
Hanna "Okay, just let me know if that changes… and thanks for taking care of him. I never asked you if you were okay with keeping him for so long. I mean, he's your dog too. But he's my responsibility as much as yours, and I just left him with you."
Caleb "Are you kidding, Han? I love having him here… He keeps me company. So, unless you want his company yourself, I want him here with me."
Hanna "I miss him… but I can't bring him here. So, I guess you'll have him all to yourself for a couple of extra months…"
Caleb "That long, Han?" He asks, concerned.
Hanna "Yeah… we barely got the investment a couple of weeks ago. We just got started here."
Caleb "But… I'll get to see you soon, right? Can we meet up? I could go there and-"
Hanna interrupts him. "Spencer's and Toby's wedding is coming… We'll see each other there."
Caleb "But that's still a month away…"
Hanna sighs. "I'm not ready for this conversation, Caleb. I don't know how things between us will go on…"
Caleb "Okay."
Hanna "I mean, I want us to go back to normal but… let's just take it easy."
Caleb "Okay."
Hanna "Well… I'll go to sleep now. Will you call me tomorrow?"
Caleb "Sure."
Hanna "I don't feel okay saying goodbye now after those monosyllabic answers from you…"
Caleb "I just don't have anything else to say, Han… It's okay… I'll just wait, I guess. Go to sleep, everything's fine."
Hanna "Okay… send Chocolate a kiss from me."
Caleb "What about me? I don't get any?"
Hanna smiles. "Fine, I send you a kiss too… a friendly kiss on your cheek."
Caleb chuckles. "Well, that's something at least."
Hanna "Can I go to sleep now?" She asks, playfully.
Caleb "Yeah… sleep well, Han."
Hanna "You too, Caleb."
/
A few days later, it's Friday afternoon, and Hanna enters a coffee shop with a wide smile on her face. She sits at a table and grabs her phone. She texts Caleb a red heart emoji. Right after a waiter takes her order, she receives a heart back from Caleb, and so she decides to give him a call.
Instead of answering the call, Caleb declines it and texts her: "I'm sorry, Han. I'm in the middle of a meeting. Is it urgent?"
Hanna: "No, don't worry. Just wanted to talk. I'll just call you tonight."
Only twenty minutes later, when Hanna is halfway through her cup of coffee, her phone rings.
Hanna "Hey!" She smiles.
Caleb "Hey! What's up, Han?"
Hanna "You didn't have to call me right now."
Caleb "Yeah, I know, but I just finished my meeting. So, what happened that you couldn't wait until tonight?" He asks, as they've been talking on the phone every night since the previous Sunday.
Hanna "Nothing, I'm happy because Lucas and I just found a great place for my store, and I couldn't wait to tell you."
Caleb grins. "That's great, Han! Where is it?"
Hanna grins too. "Manhattan… Can you believe it? I'm opening a store in freaking Manhattan… It's a bit over our budget, but Lucas said it's worth it and that he can make some small cuts in other items."
Caleb "Manhattan, huh? I'm so happy for you!"
Hanna "Yeah, I can't believe my name will be on a store here. It's not on Fifth Avenue or Soho, it's just a more affordable space on a side street, but still. I'm so excited."
Caleb "Do you have some pictures?"
Hanna "Yes, I took some pics. I'll send them to you later. Lucas is going to make an offer tomorrow morning, and once he seals the deal, I'll get in touch with an interior designer to get started with the renovations there."
Caleb "That's your favorite part, isn't it?"
Hanna smiles. "Of course… I decorated your entire house…"
Caleb "Our house."
Hanna "Yeah, but it was only yours back then."
Caleb smiles. "What about the workshop?"
Hanna "Still nothing… I'm reconsidering some of the places we've already discarded and maybe making some modifications to make it useful according to our needs. Getting a workshop is actually more important right now than the store because the sooner we get it, the sooner we can start setting up the sewing machines and everything, and start hiring people. But Lucas is positive that we can find one that suits us. He says we only need to keep looking…"
Caleb "Don't rush, then. Give it some more time."
Hanna "Yeah, I will…" She sips her coffee. "Any plans for your Friday night?"
Caleb "Kind of…" He chuckles.
Hanna "Why 'kind of'?"
Caleb "I'm babysitting Finn tonight… Toby is taking Spencer out to dinner. She's a bit stressed over the wedding, and she had a fight with Mrs. Hastings last night over some guests she wanted to add… anyway, Toby asked me if I could watch Finnie for a couple of hours."
Hanna "Oh, sounds like… you are having a wild Friday night." She teases.
Caleb "Yeah… What about you? What are your plans for tonight?"
Hanna "I'm tired… I'll just go to bed early."
Caleb "Oh, you've got a nerve, making fun of my plans." He teases back.
Hanna smiles.
Caleb "I have to go, Han… I have to finish some budgets for a couple of clients…"
Hanna "Oh, sure. I'm sorry I kept you… I'll call you tomorrow."
Caleb "I'm happy to be kept by you, but you know, I have work to do." He chuckles.
Hanna "Yeah, don't worry. Let's just talk tomorrow. Take care."
Caleb "You too, Han."
On her way back to Lucas' apartment, Hanna walks by a tattoo studio and can't help but go inside and take a look.
/
A few days later. Wednesday.
Hanna "Hey, you! Stop right there!" She tells Lucas who has just arrived to the apartment and is about to get into his bedroom.
Lucas stops in his trucks and spots Hanna lying on the couch. "Hey, Han! I didn't see you there… why are you in the dark?"
Hanna "I have a terrible headache, I was just resting a bit." She explains while sitting up, and turns on the lamp next to her.
Lucas "Have you eaten?"
Hanna "Yeah."
Lucas "Why don't you go to bed, then?"
Hanna "I don't want to go to sleep yet, I'm waiting for Caleb's call... Anyway, don't try to distract me. Why didn't you come back to sleep last night?" She asks, with an amused smile.
Lucas smiles. "You know why."
Hanna "When are you going to introduce us? I wanna meet Lizzie."
Lucas shrugs. "We could go on a double date sometime."
Hanna "Oh, come on... you know my situation with Caleb."
Lucas "You guys have been talking every single night for days."
Hanna "Yeah, but we aren't there for a double date yet. Just invite her over for dinner any of these days."
Lucas "I'll think about it."
Hanna rolls her eyes.
Lucas "I have some news for you, Han…"
Hanna "Real news or you are just trying to change the subject?"
Lucas chuckles. "Real news… we are going to China in a few weeks."
Hanna grins and stands up from the couch. "Oh! Really?"
Lucas nods. "Yeah… I'll need you to choose two of your designs for the new mass-produced line, and we'll send them to the company there for some quality tests. I want them to have a few dresses ready for the time we get there."
Hanna "I'm so excited! We are going to China!" She places her hands on Lucas' shoulders, still smiling.
Lucas smiles back. "Yeah, Diane is getting our tickets tomorrow. So, if you have any special requirements, let her know."
Hanna lets go of him and goes to the fridge. "As long as our trip doesn't overlap with Spencer's wedding, I'm good."
Lucas nods. "Okay, make sure to let her know about it then."
Hanna "I will." She opens a bottle of water and takes a few sips.
Lucas "I also got in touch today with that guy from the recruitment agency that is taking care of the positions we need to fill. This guy is specialized in the fashion business, so he knows what he's doing and has already conducted the first interviews and selected the best candidates. But I want you to be present in the second interviews. That would be next week at the agency. Diane will stay in touch with the guy and schedule those interviews on your calendar."
Hanna "Okay… what about the workshop? We have some places to check next week."
Lucas "I'll take care of that. I'll let you know if I find one I like, and you can check it out later. But we can't waste any more time going to see them together. We need to cover more tasks."
Hanna "Okay, sounds good. So… where's this agency located?"
Lucas "It's not far from here. You can take the subway. Diane will be sending you the address."
Hanna nods.
Lucas "Well, can I go to shower now?"
Hanna "Are you leaving again?"
Lucas only shoots her a smile before heading to his room.
Hanna "I'll ask Diane to also schedule me a dinner with that new girlfriend of yours." She teases him.
Lucas turns around. "I really hope you and Caleb get back together soon, so you can stop living vicariously through my romance." He fires back before finally getting into his room.
Hanna laughs at his unexpected comeback.
Her phone starts ringing, so she rushes back to the couch where she left it and answers.
Hanna "Hey there! Guess who is going to China!" She says on the phone while going into her bedroom.
/
Around two weeks later.
Hanna is already in her pajamas, applying polish to her toenails when her phone starts ringing. She smiles and answers the call, turning on the speaker mode so she can keep painting her nails while talking.
Hanna "Hey, you!"
Caleb "Hey, you, beautiful." He says softly.
Hanna's heart races upon hearing Caleb calling her that. It's the first time since they're on a break that he uses a cute nickname to call her instead of her name.
Caleb "So? How was your weekend with the girls at Spencer's lake house?"
Since Spencer and Toby have let their friends know that they didn't want them to organize bachelor and bachelorette parties for them, the girls have organized a weekend together at the lake house while Toby, Ezra, and Caleb went on a fishing trip (being it the first time Ezra joins them since he isn't much for fishing, but this was a special occasion). And the babies were left under the care of their grandparents. It's now Monday, and this is the first time they speak again since the previous week.
Hanna "It was good. All of us brought the dresses we got for the wedding, so we tried them on to show each other what we are wearing, we put on facial masks, Spencer beat our asses on every single board game we played… we watched a movie, and we talked a lot, like really a lot. It was really cold outside, so we kind of spent most of the time inside the house."
Caleb "Yeah, I almost froze out there in the tent. I'm surprised I didn't catch a cold. Thank god I took Chocolate with us, he was like a huge hot-water bottle. I hugged him all night long."
Hanna chuckles.
Caleb "We had a good time too despite the cold weather. We didn't catch many fishes, though."
Hanna "Did you take any other food? Or did you starve too?"
Caleb "A lot of food. We actually spent most of the time eating."
Hanna "And drinking too much beer too, I imagine. That's probably why you didn't catch many fishes." She teases.
Caleb laughs. "Won't deny it."
Hanna smiles. "Lucas told me today that they accepted our offer for that workshop I told you about the other day. So we've officially got a store and a workshop here in New York."
Caleb "That's awesome, Han! Congratulations!"
Hanna "Thank you! It's great because it also has a spacious area where we can set up a couple of offices. I'll have my own office to work in when I come here."
Caleb "And what about the trip to China, any news about it?"
Hanna "We are leaving next week, and I'm coming back two days before the wedding. Everything is ready, Diane booked us a very nice hotel, and she rented a car for us. It's all arranged… What about your software? How is it going? I never asked you again about it."
Caleb "Well, we have had a lot of work lately, so I kind of had to put it on pause for now. We are just in the middle of two big projects, but I'm positive I'll be able to get back to it in a few weeks."
Hanna "Okay, just don't lose your focus on it… I can tell you like developing software as much as I like making dresses."
Caleb smiles. "Yeah, I'll get back to it as soon as I can."
Hanna "What did you do today?"
Caleb "Same as always… ran in the morning, then work, and a walk with Chocolate… oh, and I also went to the store for some groceries. I saw your dad there."
Hanna "At the store? How do you know it was him?" She finishes with her nails so she closes the nail polish.
Caleb "I recognized him from the pictures of when you were little, the ones you showed me a few months ago… also, someone called him Mr. Marin, so I confirmed it."
Hanna "Oh…"
Caleb "When was the last time you talked to him?"
Hanna "Months ago… he called me for my birthday, two days after actually, but well, he was close enough, I guess. He said he was in Aruba on vacation with Isabel, so it slipped his mind…"
Caleb "You didn't mention it…"
Hanna "Wasn't important." She says, nonchalantly.
Caleb "He didn't get you a dog this time." He comments, recalling when Hanna told him her father got her Chocolate a few years ago after forgetting her birthday.
Hanna chuckles. "If he got me a dog every time he forgets about my birthday, in only a few more years, I would have more dogs than Rosewood's dog shelter. Anyway, I'll introduce him to you when I move back to Rosewood, I promise."
Caleb "It's fine, Han. We've talked about this. You don't have to. I don't mind."
Hanna "But I want to. I mean, It's not like he deserves meeting you, but it's not fair to you that you ran into him at the store, and he doesn't even know who you are."
Caleb "Okay, if that's what you want, I'm in."
Hanna "Yeah, I'll invite him over for dinner sometime…"
Caleb sighs. "Can't wait to see you, Han…" He suddenly says.
Hanna "Well, the wedding is in less than two weeks…"
Caleb "You've no idea how much I'm looking forward to it."
Hanna smiles. "Me too."
Caleb "Really? To see me? Or you're just excited about the wedding?"
Hanna "Both." She only says and changes the subject. "Have you taken care of your suit yet?"
Caleb "Not yet. I'll just go to the mall any of these days."
Hanna "Oh, come on, Caleb! You can't not have anything to wear yet… I got my dress weeks ago."
Caleb "I'll take care of it, I promise."
Hanna "Okay."
Caleb "I've gotta get going, Han… I'm going over Spencer's and Toby's for dinner."
Hanna "Oh, okay… are all you guys getting together?" She asks, finding it strange that they gather on a Monday night.
Caleb "Nope, just me. I fixed Spencer's computer and recovered some files she thought she had lost, so she's thanking me with a dinner… made by Toby." He chuckles.
Hanna chuckles too. "Okay, give Finnie a kiss from me."
Caleb "I will."
Hanna "Well, I'll call you tomorrow. Bye, Caleb."
Caleb "Night, Han."
/
A couple of days later, Caleb is at his office, very focused on his laptop, when a knock on his door interrupts him.
Caleb "Come in, Em."
Emily "Hey… this just arrived for you." She tells him while placing a box on his desk.
Caleb "What is it?" He asks, confused. "I didn't buy anything online."
Emily shrugs. "Just open it."
Caleb stands up from his chair and grabs scissors to open the package.
Caleb "Doesn't even have a return address on the package." He comments while examining it.
Once he's done cutting the tape, he finally opens the box, finding another box inside. A fancier packaging.
Emily "How strange."
Caleb finally opens the second box and finds a very elegant suit in it. "I know who the sender is." He says, a grin on his face.
Emily stares at him, waiting for him to share his thoughts.
Caleb "Hanna. She picked this out for me."
Emily smiles.
Caleb "Oh, there's also a note here." He says after taking the suit out from the box and finding a note under it.
"This one goes very well with my dress." It's all the little note says, but it's enough to make Caleb's smile grow even wider.
Emily "Seems like you've got a date for the wedding." She shoots him a warm smile. "I'm so happy for you."
Caleb smiles back. "Thanks… I'll just give her a call."
Emily "Okay, I'll give you some privacy." She squeezes his shoulder before leaving his office.
Caleb sits back in his chair with his phone on his ear.
Hanna "Hey, you! What's up?"
Caleb "Hey… I just got the coolest suit delivered to me. You have something to do with that, maybe?"
Hanna smiles. "Maybe…"
Caleb "Thank you so much, Han… I loved it… and also that little note with it."

A bit more than a week later.
Caleb is peacefully sleeping in his bed when his phone starts ringing on the bedside table, startling him awake. His eyes are dazzled by the light of the screen as he takes a look at it. Seeing that it's Hanna, he answers right away.
Caleb "What's going on, Han?" He asks, concerned.
Due to the time difference with China and Hanna's tight work schedule, they've only spoken twice in the last week, ensuring it was a time that suited both of them. So he knows there must be something going on now for her to call him in the middle of the night.
Hanna "They canceled my flight, Caleb… I won't make it to Spencer's wedding."
Caleb notices her cracking voice right away. "What happened?" He asks, still sleepy.
Hanna "They said something about technical issues affecting New York airspace… There won't be any flights there for the next two days at least."
Caleb "Where are you?"
Hanna "At the airport… I asked them to put me on another flight to another nearby city, but they are full."
Caleb "Makes sense, everyone must have been rebooked into those flights. Where's Lucas?"
Hanna "At the hotel. He's staying here for a few more days."
Caleb can hear her sobbing through the phone. "Don't worry, Han… I'm sure we can find another solution… Let me get my computer and see what else we can do. I'll call you right back, okay?"
Hanna "Okay… thanks."
Caleb "Send me the details of your canceled flight so I can see if I can find another one with the same airline, and if not, we can explore other options and get you another ticket… Just calm down, okay? There must be another option."
Hanna "Thank you."
Caleb "I'll call you right back." He repeats before ending the call.

Half an hour later, in bed, with his laptop on his lap, Caleb calls Hanna again.
Hanna "Hey! Tell me you found something."
Caleb "Yeah… a flight to LA, and then another one to Philly…"
Hanna "Okay…"
Caleb "There's a little detail… you would make it back to Rosewood only a couple of hours before the ceremony…"
Hanna "So I'm missing the rehearsal dinner…"
Caleb "Yep… I'm sorry, Han… This is the best option I could find. You'll have to cross the entire country to get here, but it's the best option, believe me."
Hanna "It's okay… considering that I was going to miss the entire wedding anyway…"
Caleb "I'll text you the details of this flight to LA so you can approach the customer service counter there at the airport and ask them to rebook you. It's the same airline, so they should do it without extra charges. This flight is taking off in some hours… And I'll get you the other ticket to Philly from here…"
Hanna "Thanks, Caleb… Really, you are saving me."
Caleb "Anytime, Han. Just let me know when you get rebooked to the new flight, and I'll get you the other ticket then."
Hanna "Okay, I'll text you… thanks again."
Caleb "You are welcome. I'll keep an eye on my phone."
Hanna "I'm sorry I woke you up."
Caleb "No problem. We'll get you to this wedding no matter how."
Hanna smiles.
