PROMPT: Help Me Pack
Family
"Riley, please!" Rose begged. She had hoped he would understand, that he would see she only did it for him.
"You lied to me!" he shouted back at her. "You told me my dad wasn't ready to be a dad… and…" He shook his head in frustration, bronze curls around his face.
"He wasn't ready," Rose recalled the moment she went to tell him. He'd been at a party with some of the cheerleaders. She'd looked at him from across the room, and he'd done a line of coke off the table in front of him.
Rose had turned and left. She wasn't going to have that around her child.
"Did you even try to tell him again?"
Taking a breath, Rose had to pause. She'd thought about it over the years, and finally, when he'd gotten sober, she'd started to think about it seriously. When he stayed sober, Rose knew she had to make plans.
She hadn't thought they'd go like this.
Riley threw his hands up in the air at her lack of response and began to pack his bag.
"What are you doing?" Panic rose inside her chest, making it constrict.
"I'm going… I'm going to stay with… dad." The word was foreign to him.
"Riley!"
She stepped in front of him, slightly surprised at how tall he'd gotten.
"Help me pack or move out the way."
The harshness in his voice shocked her. He had never spoken to her like that before.
"Don't speak to your mother like that." It was unexpected. She didn't even know when he'd got here.
Turning around, Rose felt tears build up in her eyes as she looked at the man who had given her her wonderful son: Edward Masen. Behind him was her sister, his girlfriend, Bella, and behind her was the man of her dreams. He also happened to be the cousin to the father of her child: Emmett McCarty.
This story will be continued at some point. Thanks for reading.
