The True Story of 595

Chapter 1: Story Time

"Just one more story mommy, I want to know what happens next with the princess and knight!" asked a yawning almost 6 year old Lucy Grace O'Neill. "Lucy (A/N1), I've already told you two stories. You need to sleep, tomorrow is your birthday." Samantha replied tucking her in for the night. Yawning again Lucy laid her head down hugging a plushy alien that looked suspiciously like Thor. "I'll be 6 won't I mommy?" she asked fighting sleep. "Yes you will...but only if you go to sleep kiddo." Samantha said brushing a strand of dirty blond hair to the side. "Will you tell me why the princess acted silly around villager people tomorrow night?" the little girl asked drifting off to sleep finally. The stories that both Samantha and Jack told their daughter were heavily modified missions that turned into 'The Princess and Knight', Gracie loved them begging for more.

Samantha sat watching her daughter for a few minutes smiling. She remembered Jacks proposal at the lake cabin, their wedding and honey moon. Then finding out that she was pregnant with their son, Jonathon Jacob O'Neill shortly after getting married. They found out about Gracie during a routine medical exam. This was after accepting the Atlantis posting. That changed everything for the two of them. Samantha instead became an advisor to the president on alien technology and cyber security. For the past 3 years she has lead the SGC as General Carter to prevent confusion in the ranks. Jack had recently accepted the position of Joint Chief of the Space Force, a brand new military branch of which the SGC became part of. Samantha in her wildest dream never thought she'd be a mother of two let alone become a general. God clearly had a plan for her life, one she was grateful for. The only thing that bothered her was that mom and dad weren't there to spoil their grandkids.

Gracie wanting to hear about 'why the princess acted silly' brought back memories of a mission from long ago. Samantha remembered the mission to P3X-595 (A/N2). The memory wasn't a particularly good one. Something happened neither Daniel nor Teal'C wouldn't tell her to this day. Teal'C told her at the time... "Captain Carter on my planet there are stories that should never be retold." Then he walked away without saying anything further. The Jaffa's words chilled her to the bone when he said that. Even though it sounded ominous she still wanted to know. Daniel being overly talkative had been her next stop. His response was even more chilling. "Sam, believe me when I say just let it go. I wish I could forget it but I can't, it's a burden I'll carry for the rest of my days." He said then changed the subject never speaking of 595 again. Samantha knew if neither of them would talk, Col. O'Neill wouldn't either. To be truthful it scared her enough to take the hint never to be brought up again.

Jack sat in living room reading the Colorado Sun News adjusting his glasses to reading the sports page. Hearing his wife of 8 years now walking down the stairs he put the paper down. Looking at the clock showing it was 2055hrs. "Lucy finally fall asleep Sam?" he asked as she entered the living room with two steaming hot coffee cups. Sitting beside her husband Sam laid her head on his shoulder, mind off somewhere in the cosmos. "Lucy wanted another story but sleep came first. She's excited about her birthday tomorrow." She answered while pondering a certain question. "That she is... can't wait to see her Uncle T, Space Monkey, Janet and Cassie. JJ is excited too can't wait to talk Star Wars with 'T'." Sam just nodded wondering how Jack would react if she asked about 595. "Samantha, what's on your mind? Don't tell me it's about the birthday party because clearly it's not." He asked putting the paper down then placing an arm around her shoulders. She relaxed into the embrace chewing on her bottom lip.

"Jack, we said we wouldn't have any secrets once married other than National Security or Classified...correct." Jack knew his wife had something serious to ask, maybe about his past or even Sara. "That's part of what makes a healthy marriage so what do you want to know about?" he asked ready to answer whatever was on her genius mind. "You promise not to get upset or angry if I ask." Sam said turning to look him straight into his brown eyes. "Sam, why would I get upset or angry, I have no secrets to hide from you." he answered honestly while red flags were going up. "I want your promise before I ask Jack...and remember Lucy and JJ is sleeping." The conversation just got real serious Jack thought. "Samantha..." he said getting interrupted. "...promise me Jack that you won't get upset or angry." She repeated getting a worried look from her husband. "...Sam, you're worrying an old man..." he replied then continued. "...I promise not to get angry or upset." Taking his hand in her smaller one she let out a breath.

"I want to know what actually happened on 595? Daniel and Teal'C won't speak of that mission to this day." She asked with pleading eyes. Pinching the brow of his nose Jack stood up and paced the room. Sam could see the tension in his body. Whatever happened must have shaken Jack to his core. After a few minutes he turned to face his wife. "Sam, T and Daniel won't speak of that mission aspect for good reason. I don't want to speak of 595 either, I failed you as your commanding officer that mission. So much so I ask you...please don't ask for the details." Jack pleaded.

Sam went to Jack embracing him tightly getting the same in return. She put her hands on his cheeks looking him directly in the eyes. "Jack, you could never fail me. You kept me from making a bigger fool of myself by omitting my mistakes in our reports." Sam told her husband silently pleading him to tell her what happened. "Samantha, if I tell you what happened after you blacked out you'll hate me and I don't want that." To reassure Jack she kissed him softly then spoke. "Jack, neither Daniel nor Teal'C would tell me. I knew you wouldn't either so I dropped it. I dropped it because deep down I didn't want to know. That was years ago when I was a young and naive captain. I'm a general now; I can handle whatever happened on 595." Jack searched her eyes deciding to finally come clean of one of his biggest failures as leader. Leaning his head on hers he took a deep breath. "We'll need something stronger than coffee Sam for this conversation." He said talking her hand going into the den. "Jack now you are scaring me, what's so bad about 595 that we need liquor for." She asked following him silently almost regretting asking the question to begin with.

With the whiskey poured and both sitting down facing each other Jack downed his then poured another. "Samantha, I killed a man for trying to rape you while blacked out!"
