The clanking of the train against the metal bars along with it echoing in the tunnel was uncomfortably loud to say the least.
"How do you people in the city deal with all this noise?" I asked.
"It's just how city life is. While it annoys you now give it some time you'll grow to enjoy it like myself." Regulator Xiao said.
I turned to Regulator Zuo for his response.
"I do not have a strong opinion regarding how loud something is up till a point." He said.
The three of us didn't speak for a while as we exited the tunnel to be greeted by the sun, I covered my eyes from the sudden attack of light.
"Welcome Lin to the city of Taimon. We will head straight for the department building and figure out something regarding you. It is not too far from the station but trust me the streets are very loud in the afternoon." Regulator Xiao said as the train reached our stop.
The walk to the station itself wasn't too bad. Just people walking to and from wherever they are needed, however I still felt headaches now and again. It was nothing too serious but enough for Xiao to notice and buy me a bottle of water. Upon reaching the department station with the words 'Ministry of Rites'.
"In here we will do a few tests on you and that spear of yours, don't worry it shouldn't be anything too crazy. Just to see if you are connected to Sui in any way." Regulator Xiao said.
"Understood." I said.
" You sound like Zuo already. Soldier response and everything." Regulator Xiao remarked.
"Let's get going. We don't have all day, Regulator Xiao." Zuo said as he walked into the building.
Regulator Xiao and I followed behind him.
"What and where would I be without him?" Regulator Xiao mumbled under his breath loud enough for me to hear.
The process to get me tested was quick. The Ministry of Rites and the Sui Regulator departments have bad blood between them.
"Just let Regulator Xiao do the talking for us. He's built a good relationship with the people here when it comes to business." Zuo explained to me.
Once the testing was over a doctor approached the three of us. In his hand were a few papers.
" Regulator Xiao, the test results have come back and I'm not sure if this is good or bad news. In regards to the spear we don't understand why but the spear seems normal for the most part. The most interesting fact about it is its high level of durability and unknown materials that created it. If the spear is related to Sui then perhaps what makes the spear special is hard for us mortals to uncover."
"That isn't too surprising, the Sui siblings' abilities are hard for even me to understand so I'm not upset. What about the child herself?" He asked.
The doctor grabbed another piece of paper. "Her body is abnormal. All of her physical abilities are beyond human. This is a guess on my part but if she trains properly then she could easily rise in ranks within the combat related departments." The doctor stated.
The expressions of the two regulators were noteworthy to say the least in my eyes. Zuo's eyes narrowed at the words while Regulator Xiao's eyes were wide, as if a god just graced him with his eternal wish.
Regulator Xiao could be seen to be deep in thought as he cupped his chin. "If that's the case then we should head out. I appreciate the test you provided us."
"Just business as usual. The child's spear will be handed back to you in the main lobby. Goodbye." The doctor said before leaving the three of us in the hall.
After leaving the building we decided to head to a restaurant that Regulator Xiao knows. He recommended a thick noodle dish that came from Higashi.
"Ah, this dish never gets old." Regulator Zuo said as he ate, dipping some of his noodles into the broth that was in a separate bowl.
"I think this is a good time to talk about it." Regulator Xiao faced me. "Lin, as the doctor said your body is abnormal in a good way, would you like to use it?"
"How exactly?" I asked as I shoved a spoonful of food in my mouth.
"Well currently you seem to have two choices. Either spend time with Dusk in the mountains doing whatever happens up there, or join us." Regulator Xiao stated.
"What do you mean join you? Like joining the army?" I asked.
"Yep the army will provide you with stability along with preventing you from feeling bored compared to if you stayed with Lady Dusk in the mountains." Regulator Xiao said.
"What happens if I say no?" I asked.
"Then we would simply leave you alone, after all you are still under the care of Lady Dusk and our job is to observe. We only get involved if needed." Zuo said.
I didn't say anything as I thought of their words.
"You don't need to make a choice now, just think about it until we return to Lady Dusk's cabin." Regulator Xiao said as the three of us continued to eat our food.
The train ride back was uneventful. I only stayed in my seat as I thought about what could happen if I stayed with Lady Dusk, sitting in the mountains day after day in the hopes of understanding who or what I am along with this spear. While it may be peaceful, that would get boring very fast. However if I joined the army what would happen?
I followed that train of thought as I watched various people come on and off the train, the only things that stayed the same were the three of us and the setting sun behind us as the train was dyed orange by its light.
The Ark
Once we reached the cabin we were greeted with Lady Dusk looking at a small pond. I dash towards her.
"Lady Dusk we're back!" I yelled at the top of my lungs
She turned toward us, stood up and walked in our direction.
"I'm glad to see that your day went smoothly it seems." She said as a blue colored bird landed on her shoulder.
"It was, I even got to eat some food that Regulator Xiao bought. It was pretty good." I said.
Lady Dusk merely nodded and looked at the two Regulators.
"From the expression on your faces I assume you wish to talk about something in specific." She said.
"That we do Lady Dusk, we learned today that Lin has abnormal physical abilities. Strength and agility were highly marked. As for the spear the only thing of note they found were the materials that made it and its durability." Zuo stated as he read the medical report.
Lady Dusk didn't say anything for a moment. "I see, am I to assume there is more?"
"Regulator Xiao gave Lin an idea. He recommends that she enlist in the army, with her body she can complete a large number of tasks. Also given you are connected to her she may be enlisted to the Sui Regulators Department." Zuo continued.
"So you are asking for my permission basically." Lady Dusk said.
"That is correct Lady Dusk." Zuo said.
Lady Dusk looked at the two regulators. "As I said before Lin is allowed to do what she wants, she is her own person." She turned her soft gaze to me. "Lin, if you wish to join then you will be under their guidance from then onward. " She explained.
"I was thinking about this on the way here. I want to thank you for taking care of me, but I want to see the world and the military would be a nice change of pace. Plus it appears I'm quite strong and this spear is amazing too." I said confidently.
"If that is your choice then I will not stop you, however the world is often a very relentless place." Lady Dusk said,
"Don't worry, I can handle it." I said as I waved my hand dismissively at her.
Regulator Xiao came forward and placed his hands on my shoulder.
"With that done Zuo and I will wait. Grab everything you need because once we are on the train ride back to Taimon we won't be going back here." Regulator Xiao said.
I pointed at my spear. "I have everything I need." I said.
"If that's the case then let's be off. I, formally welcome to the Yanese army, the world offers a lot for everyone." Regulator Xiao said as he walked off with Zuo behind him.
I waved goodbye to Lady Dusk as I chased after them.
