As promised, Henry shows up an hour and half early for training the next morning, bagels and coffee in hand. "You're a godsend, Kid," Ray said instead of a thank you and took the bagels from Henry. The blonde just rolled his eyes, very used to his boss' antics by that point. "Sleep okay?" Ray questioned after taking a bite of an everything bagel. Henry shrugged.
"I slept okay, I guess," he answered, which was a lie. Ray shot him a skeptical look that was tinged with concern.
"Yeah, I can tell you slept great by the dark circles under your eyes." Henry sighed. What was he supposed to say? You're right, Ray. I haven't been sleeping well. Not only have I felt like I'm being watched at my house, but now I find out that my parents are keeping something big from me.
That was sure to go over well.
"Kid?" Ray pressed, dark eyebrow raising.
"I just couldn't sleep last night," Henry finally said with a shrug. Ray's blue eyes studied him intently, looking for any hint of a lie, which he technically wasn't.
"Okay," he relented, taking another bite of his everything bagel. Henry felt his shoulders drop in relief, and he smiled over at his mentor. He grabbed a plain one, spreading some cream cheese over it before taking a bite himself.
After they finished eating, Henry and Ray took to the mats to train. Ray was going to teach him a new take-down move. In typical fashion when it came to Swellview's heroes, their serious training time turned into a let's see who can take the other down faster challenge. While Ray was stronger than him, Henry was faster, even without his hyper motility He ducked and weaved under Ray's outstretched arms as he tried to grab at the blonde, and Henry could honestly say that he was having fun. The previous night's slight revelation pushed to the very back of his mind.
Unfortunately for him, the sound of the elevator hurdling down to the man cave distracted him enough that Ray was able to grab his arm, wrap the other one around his torso, and bodily fling him down to the mat. The shriek of surprise that left Henry's mouth was one that he would forever be embarrassed about. "I win!" Ray cheered, pumping a fist up in the air to celebrate his triumph over his sidekick. Henry groaned in annoyance and kicked out at him half heartedly.
"I don't think I have ever heard you make that noise in the whole thirteen years I've known you," Piper cracked, making her way towards where the uneaten bagels were still sitting.
"Shut up, Piper," Henry huffed, starting to get up before Ray reached down and helped him the rest of the way. The two smiled brightly at one another. "That was fun, Ray. Thanks!"
"You're getting so much better, Kid!" The man praised, clapping Henry on the shoulder, blue eyes shining proudly. That same warmth from before spread throughout his chest. Jake never looked at Henry like that. He never made him feel like Jake was proud to be Henry's dad. He sometimes wondered if his parents ever loved him. They weren't as standoffish with Piper as they were with him, but Henry sometimes felt like he raised Piper, not them. He even felt like he raised himself more than they did. Jake and Siren Hart were not meant to be parents, that was for sure.
"Thanks, Ray," he replied gratefully after his quick lamentations. The dark haired man smiled at him in that way that made the smile lines in his face deepen.
"So, what's on the agenda for today?" Piper questioned, plopping herself down on the couch and taking a bite of the bagel she had grabbed for herself.
"Well, Charlotte's going to man the computers and Jasper will be heading upstairs to open the shop," Ray ordered.
"Typical," Jasper sighed, trudging his way to the elevator. Henry snickered a bit as he sat down next to his sister who sneered at him.
"You stink. Go take a shower," the youngest one there ordered, moving to the side to be able to kick out at Henry with her boots.
"Ow! Piper!" He protested, catching one of her feet and tossing it away making her spin in her seat.
"You stink!" She repeated. "Go!"
"I'm going, I'm going, chill!"
Henry made his way to one of the spare rooms that he'd lovingly dubbed his own and grabbed a change of clothes and slipped into the connecting bathroom to take a quick shower just in case an emergency cropped up soon. He dried off and changed into pair of sweatpants and a tee shirt that Henry was pretty sure actually belonged to Ray. He slipped on his tennis shoes and made his way back into the main section of the man cave where everyone was still seated in the same positions as before he left.
"Your turn, Ray," Charlotte ordered from her normal spot. Ray sighed loudly, hoisting himself up from his position on the couch to make his way to his own room through the open sprocket. Henry took his place, grabbing the red and blue throw that was over the back of the couch and wrapping up in it. He wasn't necessarily cold, but he did feel a bit of a chill.
"Why didn't Ray just shower when I did?" He questioned, looking over at Charlotte. She turned in her chair to face him.
"He wanted to make sure that either himself or you were out here in case an emergency call came in," she explained, and Henry felt that warm feeling in his chest come back. When he was younger, he knew that Ray would have never trusted him to go out by himself to take on crime. Now, though, he trusted him to be his sidekick and be able to protect Swellview on his own, too.
Henry curled back up into the throw, and rested his head on the armchair, wanting to take a little nap. His nose tickled a bit and sneeze bust out before he could stop it.
"You okay?" Charlotte questioned and even Piper was looking at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Yep, I'm good. Just a sneeze."
It was not just a sneeze.
When Henry woke up from his nap a couple of hours later, he could only breathe out of one nostril, and his throat was burning. He out a cough, one that he could feel rattle in his chest, and groaned. Ray appeared in front of him with a little furrow between his dark eyebrows.
"Go home, kid," he ordered. "Get some sleep, and I'll see you back here tomorrow morning." Henry let out another sneeze and nodded.
"Okay, thanks, Ray." Ray nodded and watched him closely as he ambled his way to the elevator with Piper next to him.
"I'll make sure the idiot gets home okay," she sighed. Henry gave a small wave at the same time as another sneeze before the elevator door shut. "I'll drive you home." He nodded, and as always, was still so confused as to why the DMV sent his fourteen year old sister a driver's license. It didn't make any sense.
They arrived home about ten minutes later, and Henry quickly made his way to his room and climbed into bed after kicking his shoes off. His phone buzzed and he dug around in the sweatpants' pockets until he found it. It was on the group message between himself, Jasper, and Charlotte.
Hope you feel better, Hen! Jasper had texted.
As long as he stays hydrated and eats some brown soup, he will. Henry rolled his eyes at Charlotte's mothering, but he still smiled, texting out a quick thank you and that he'd see them tomorrow before burrowing back into his comforter and falling asleep quickly.
