Welcome all to another fanfiction featuring the goofy quartet you've grown to love from Sucked Into The Smash Universe. These adventures will be shorter than SSU (If I can help it) but they'll still be an enjoyable read. Or at least, I think so. If you have any other suggestions, please don't hesitate to ask. If I can scrounge up enough information about it or I've played it before, then I'd love to do it.

Kimani's House- Basement

"So what are we jumping into?" Dylan excitedly asked as he hopped onto the couch, sending Austin airborne. Once he landed, he sent Dylan a glance. Kimani was currently digging through his games while Jordan hovered over him, curious himself.

"Uh... I'm thinking of one of the older games..." Kimani muttered, his top half deep in the cabinet that held the majority of his games.

"Are we going to go on a quest as grand as the last one?" Jordan heckled. Kimani poked his head out for a moment, opting to send Jordan a bored look before he went back inside. He made a noise afterward before he appeared again, accidentally hitting Jordan in the stomach. In his hands was a Wii-Mote. He quickly navigated through the various menus until he got to the Virtual Catalog and pulled up Paper Mario. Once he clicked everything, he put the Wii-Mote down and stepped back a good distance.

"Welp, let's see if Master knew what he was doing," Kimani said, reaching for the necklace around his neck. There were two items on it. One was a red flame icon while the other was a smash icon. Kimani touched the smash icon one and uttered a small phrase before it glowed. At this time, the title screen for Paper Mario had loaded. Kimani looked back to the others, who had stood up and walked next to him. Jordan reached to his side and grabbed the chain that hung on his shorts. Like Kimani, a smash icon was there as well but he also had a blue water droplet on his. Dylan had a necklace like Kimani and instead of a red flame, he had a yellow lightning bolt. Austin pulled the left sleeve of his shirt back, which revealed a green bracelet. On top of the smash icon, he also had a green leaf on it as well. The three of them tapped the icon and said the same phrase, causing them to glow as well.

"Adventure!" Dylan yelled as the four of them got sucked into the TV.

?

The four teenagers flashed into the middle of a room where multiple people were located. To their surprise, no one seemed to notice them warp into the room. The group looked around before they noticed that their appearances had changed as well. Kimani's body, alongside everyone, had shrunken down to the point where he was just a head, body, and feet with arms that dangled to the very bottom of his body. Kimani wore a red hoodie on the top part of his body while the bottom half had on pants. His feet were simple black sneakers. Jordan was a bit wider and taller than Kimani and he had on a black shirt and beige shorts while he had on black sneakers as well. Dylan's model was slightly bigger than Kimani but smaller than Jordan and he was the tallest out of the group. He wore a yellow t-shirt and had on blue jeans as well while yellow sneakers rested on his feet. Austin was average-sized, being only slightly taller than Kimani himself. He had a blue jacket on and black jeans. Instead of sneakers, Austin wore brown boots. All of them had simplified facial expressions, meaning that their eyes were simple black dots and their mouths were simply lines until they spoke, which produced speech bubbles.

"...Wow, we look so different..." Jordan said, looking himself over. When he turned to look at the others, his entire body physically flipped.

"Well, yeah. We have to match the universe we're in. In this one, everyone is paper," Kimani informed him.

"So, what about the others?" Austin asked, scratching his beard.

"Only one way to find out. Alpha?" Dylan answered. There was a moment of silence before a small black glow appeared on Dylan's chest.

"I read you, Master Dylan. It's a pleasure to speak to you after all this time," Alpha informed him. Dylan smiled before a red glow appeared from Kimani's chest, a green glow appeared from Austin's left wrist and Jordan's right shorts pocket glowed blue.

"We're here too, shrimp. Long time no see," Firebrand mentioned. Kimani glowered before the door opening caught his attention. Walking in was Mario and Luigi.

"What a magnificent castle! I never get used to this place. It looks like lots of guests are already here." Luigi said after walking in. Mario nodded as they walked around, greeting some of the Toads and others. Kimani and the others stood there before Mario walked up to him. He raised his hand and opened his mouth, greeting them.

"Hello. You must be Mario, right?" Kimani asked. Mario rapidly nodded before asking them another question.

"Oh, we were just in the neighborhood when Princess Peach invited us. We still haven't had the pleasure of thanking her personally. If I'm being frank... I have no idea where she is..." Kimani continued. Mario placed a hand on his chin before he nodded. He offered for the group to follow him as he started up the stairs. The teens followed after him as Mario opened the star-marked door which revealed an even bigger second-floor lobby. The others looked around in interest as Mario chatted with the guard that... well, guarded the door. After the fifth time speaking to him, the guard finally moved. He gave Mario's posse a wary glance as they passed. They walked down a long hallway for a bit before they entered another small area with a couch and everything. Standing on the far side was Peach. When she heard footsteps, she turned around. She gave Mario a warm smile before she eyed the others.

"Oh, Mario! You came to the party to see me! You're so sweet! Thank you!" Peach thanked him. Mario asked her what she was doing up here.

"I was just resting a bit. It gets tiring, greeting all those guests out there!" She exclaimed as she walked over. She then nodded toward the others.

"Greetings, Princess Peach. We just wanted to personally thank you for the invitation to your party," Kimani said, bowing slightly. Peach giggled as a result.

"Oh. It's absolutely no problem! I'm glad you're enjoying it! Mario, who are your friends?" Peach answered, asking Mario that last question. A question mark appeared over Mario's head, signaling that he forgot to ask.

"Oh right, we didn't introduce ourselves. My name is Kimani. This is Dylan, Austin, and Jordan," Kimani introduced, pointing to each of them in order. Peach nodded before she looked back at Mario.

"Well, Nobody will bother us here. Shall we relax and chat, just the two of us? It was a lovely day today, so I'm sure it's comfortable out on the balcony right now. Would you accompany me, Mario?" She asked. Mario turned to look at the group behind him. Kimani gave him a thumbs up before Mario turned back around and nodded. Before anyone could move, the castle started rumbling. Everyone looked around in confusion before the rumbling got even worse, knocking everyone down. The shaking lasted for a while before it finally stopped, allowing the 6 to stand up.

"Oh! Are you all alright? What in the world was that?" Peach asked as she looked around. An exclamation point appeared over her head as she walked to the window. Stars could be seen outside, and even the visible daylight had vanished.

"Oh my! Look, Mario! It's still daytime, isn't it?... But I can see stars outside!" She continued. Mario gave her a quizzical look as did everyone else minus Kimani. After a few moments, a loud crash was heard as something broke through the glass. Mario quickly shielded Peach from the shards while the others jumped back as Bowser and Kammy flew through. Bowser quickly jumped out of his clown car while Kammy floated nearby. Mario lightly ushered Peach behind him as the others stood next to Mario.

"Gwaa ha ha ha ha ha! Long time no see, Princess Peach!" Bowser laughed. Peach flinched.

"... Bowser! But this can't be! It was you who made the ground shake just now, wasn't it!? Whatever did you do!?" She exclaimed. Bowser laughed once more.

"Yeah, that was me! I've lifted your castle up into the sky! It's sitting on my castle now! Weren't expecting that, huh?" He boasted. Kimani decided to stay quiet for that one while everyone else shook their heads.

"Ha! This castle's under my control now, my dear! Now you will obey ME!" Bowser continued. At this point, Bowser finally noticed Mario standing there in a fighting stance.

"Huh!? What? It's...Mario! What a shock!" He exclaimed.

"...Do we not exist?" Jordan asked. Kimani shushed him.

"Ha! Not really! I expected you to turn up, right on cue. You're just as annoying as ever," He continued.

"Wow, that's rude..." Dylan muttered. Mario nodded, agreeing with him as Bowser continued, saying that there was nothing he could do. Peach leaned forward slightly.

"Haven't you learned your lesson by now, Bowser? You can never defeat Mario! Why don't you give up already?" She heckled. Bowser slightly recoiled before he crossed his arms and closed his eyes.

"True, true, I have had my problems in the past..." He started before he opened his eyes. He then leaned forward, bawling his fist. "But this time is different! This time I'm gonna win!"

"Doubt it," Kimani muttered. Bowser heard him however and shot him a nasty glare before he focused back on Mario.

"OK, tough guy! Let's go!" Bowser said before he and Mario started fighting. Mario began with a simple head stomp, dealing 1 damage. The others cheered before Bowser ran up and swiped him with his claw, dealing 1 back. Mario struck back with another jump which caused Bowser to attack once more. Mario followed up with one more jump attack before Bowser recoiled slightly, shaking his head.

"Good old Mario...always fighting. You're a thorn in my side... But today, your pathetic little attacks won't beat me!" He exclaimed. He dug into his shell before pulling out a wand with a yellow star at the end.

"Take a look at this! Look what I stole from Star Haven! It's the Star Rod! This fine piece of work has the power to grant any wish in the whole world! And when I use the Star Rod to increase my strength, even you can't beat me, Mario!" He finished. He then raised the wand before a plethora of power flowed into him, which caused him to gain a rainbow aura.

"Is he using a Final Smash!?" Austin yelled. Kimani simply shook his head as Bowser stomped over and swiped once more, which dealt a meaty 3 damage this time. Mario shook his head before he fixed his hat, launching another stomp, but it didn't do anything.

"Gwa ha ha ha ha ha! Is that all you've got? How sad! You'd best take some vitamins, 'cause that didn't hurt at all!" Bowser taunted, swiping another 3 from the plumber. Mario panted as his health was at 2, which meant he was in danger. Mario gritted his teeth before he attacked once more, only for the same thing to happen.

"Yup, just as I expected. Mario's no match for the new me. It's not even worth my time to toy with you anymore, Mario. It's time to end this! Here we go, Mario! Good night!" Bowser gloated once more before he inhaled deeply and unleashed a large torrent of flames on Mario, dealing 10 damage to him. Mario spun around 3 times before he fell on his face.

"Oh no! Mario! Get up!" Peach pleaded but Mario didn't budge. Bowser stomped around in victory.

"Yes! Oh, yeah! I did it! I finally did it! I beat my old rival, Mario! Yessss!" He cheered.

"Congratulations on your victory, Your Viciousness! That's why you're the King!" Kammy praised from above.

"As long as I have this Star Rod, everything I wish will come true! No one can stop me now!" Bowser boasted. He then stomped up to Mario's body.

"Well, well, well... I guess I might as well get rid of Mario. He's no good to anyone now, that's for sure." Bowser rambled, raising the wand once more. But before he could do anything, the other four stepped forward, activating their weapons.

"Don't take another step," Austin warned, aiming his bow at him. Bowser looked at them questionably.

"What's this? You want to fight too? If Mario couldn't take me down, what hope do you guys have?"

"Back off, now," Jordan dangerously told him. Bowser rolled his eyes.

"...Yeah, no. After I finally defeated my rival, I don't have time to deal with a bunch of nobodies," Bowser told them, holding the wand up. From above, a powerful bolt of lightning struck the four teens, causing them to fall over. They felt like they had most of their power drained and their minds scrambled. Before anyone could do anything about it, he then struck the 5 of them again, sending them flying out the window.

"Oh no!" Peach screeched as the 5 of them continued falling to the ground.

?- Clearing

By now, Mario had landed painfully on the ground, still knocked out. Deep in his subconscious, he wondered what would happen to Peach and cursed himself for failing to defeat Bowser. In his self-loathing, he could have sworn he heard voices.

"Oh, thank heavens! He's been gravely injured, but I think he'll recover," One voice said.

"But Bowser has the Star Rod! Now he's mightier than Mario! It's hopeless! All is lost!" Another voice panicked.

"Everybody just calm down. As long as we keep it together there's always hope. Now... Our fates are in Mario's hands. We must try to revive him. Gather round, everyone. Send Mario your power!" Yet another voice said. Power flowed within him, which healed his most grievous wounds but he still didn't have enough energy to get up.

"Phew...that's it. That's all we can do right now. Mario... Please get up... Please..." The same voice pleaded before they disappeared. Mario was in better shape but he still didn't have the energy to move or open his eyes. He heard some footsteps approaching before he faintly heard a little girl's voice. It faded in and out, making Mario aware he was passing out again. The girl recognized him, however, which was good and she ran to get help. But one more thought appeared in his head before he entirely passed out again.

Exactly what had happened to the other 4 that were with him?

?

Mario's subconscious faded back in once more. He felt better but he still couldn't get up. In his stupor, he could hear another voice once more. He noted that it was the same voice as before.

"Mario... Can you hear me, Mario...? I'm Eldstar, a Star Spirit... I have something very important to tell you... It concerns the princess...and all of the Mushroom Kingdom... But sadly, I haven't the strength to talk to you here... Mario... I need to have you come to Shooting Star Summit. Please... Mario... We Star Spirits will be waiting for you at the summit..." The voice told him. Shooting Star Summit... Star Spirit... Peach... Mario processed this information. If there were a chance to stop Bowser and save Peach, he would take it. Mario focused hard before he finally opened his eyes, blinking a couple of times to get used to the shining light. He sat up slightly, noting the white sheets on him. He put two and two together before he realized he was in a Toad Inn. He looked around before he spotted one of the guests he had visited Peach with. Before he could question this, a Toad walked in. Once he noticed Mario sitting up, an exclamation mark appeared over his head before he rushed over.

"Oh...Mario! I'm so happy to see you awake! You haven't opened your eyes for days and days! Everyone's been worried sick!" The Toad told him. Mario opened his mouth in shock. Days? He felt like he was out for a couple of minutes if anything! His thoughts shifted once more to Peach and her safety. He quickly asked the Toad a question.

"This is Goomba Village. It's a tiny village that's just west of Toad Town. The only residents are me and a single family of Goombas. The Goombas in the family are just the nicest folks you'll ever meet. They're the ones who found you and your friend unconscious in the forest and carried you here to get better." The Toad explained. Mario nodded. He knew he heard someone earlier. It still didn't explain the other voices, however. Curious, he decided to ask the Toad about this.

"Huh...? A Star with a mustache? You're saying a star told you to go to Shooting Star Summit?" The Toad repeated. Mario nodded.

"No, I saw nothing like that. And I sure didn't see anyone come in or out of this house. I wonder, Mario... Maybe you just had a dream?" The Toad told him. Mario thought about it for a moment before he shook his head. No way. It was too... real and even more urgent feeling to be a dream. The Toad must have read his thoughts because he instantly disregarded his own comment, mentioning that Star Haven was the home of the Star Spirits and Shooting Star Summit was the nearest place. He shrugged however and told him he was glad he was OK and told him to see the Goombas that helped him. Mario nodded before he jumped out the bed. He eyed the black teenager before he looked at the Toad again.

"Oh him? He was just as out of it as you. If you just got up then..." The Toad started before Kimani groaned, opening his eyes after a few moments.

"Ow... What hit me..." He groaned. The Toad walked up to the bed.

"Easy now. You've been out of it for days," The Toad told him. Kimani shot up.

"Days?!" He exclaimed. Mario was glad he wasn't the only one freaking out about that. The Toad nodded.

"Yep, but don't worry. You seem to be fine now,"

"...What about my friends? Mario!?" He panicked again. He looked over before he noticed Mario standing there.

"He's fine too,"

"Oh thank god..." Kimani sighed, flopping back down. Mario couldn't help but chuckle.

"As for your friends, I've only seen you and Mario. We haven't seen anyone else. Maybe they're somewhere else?"

"Ugh. Stupid Bowser... If only we could have done more..." Kimani grunted. Mario felt bad. He didn't mean for the 4 of them to get involved in his own business. Mario walked up and raised an arm as well as opened his mouth.

"...You want to help me find my friends?" Kimani repeated. Mario wondered why everyone did that but he nodded anyway.

"Great! Thanks! In return, I'll help you with this whole Bowser problem!" Kimani told him, hopping out the bed. Mario gave him a skeptical look. Kimani informed him that he was perfectly capable of handling himself in a fight, to which Mario nodded. He was still in a bit of a daze and extra help wouldn't kill him. Afterward, he held his hand out. Kimani nodded before he grabbed Mario's hand, shaking it and sealing the deal.

"Kimani has joined the party! With his powerful punches and kicks, Kimani can Strike his enemies! On the field, Kimani can offer his help by giving Mario a hand in breaking tough items! Kimani's battle talent is his stronger Action Commands, however, the timing for them is stricter,"

After that, Mario walked outside with Kimani in tow and was greeted by a small town. In front of them was a glowing rainbow block with an S on it. Kimani looked at it questionably.

"What's this?" He asked. Mario explained that it was a Save Block, a mysterious block that "saved" his progress in a sense. He was still determining the logic behind it, but when Mario took a beating, he seemed to end up near it mysteriously. Mario thought back to Bowser and frowned as he remembered there were no Save Blocks at Peach's Castle. Mario walked under it and bonked it, feeling his progress being saved before he walked over to a nearby Goomba with a mustache. He was currently fiddling with a gate. Kimani loudly asked how he was doing so with no hands, causing Mario to lightly elbow him as he turned around.

"Howdy, Mario! Feeling better?" The Goomba asked. Mario nodded. Kimani bluntly added that he was fine as well, which caused the Goomba to sweatdrop.

"Well, feel free to rest in our house if you need it," He finished. Mario quickly explained that they needed to leave.

"You what? You have to leave right now?"

"Yeah. I... don't know why but I know we have to go somewhere called Shooting Star Summit," Kimani answered. Wait, how did he know about that? Did the Star Spirit speak to him as well?

"...Oh, Shooting Star Summit. Something important, no doubt. Well, I believe that the summit is near Toad Town. You'll have to wait a bit. I have to fix this gate before you can head out to the east. That earthquake the other day really did a job on it. Did you feel that quake? Shoot! I thought the sky was falling,"

"More like the ground was rising..." Kimani muttered. Mario slightly chuckled at that one.

"Just relax and don't worry. I'll have this fixed in a jiffy," The Goomba said once more before he went back to messing with the gate. Mario didn't want to hover over him so he decided to go and thank the rest of the family for saving them. Mario and Kimani walked to the left where another house was located. Mario politely knocked on the door before stepping inside, being greeted by a comfy-looking place. No one was found inside, however. Kimani suggested they check out the door in the far back, to which Mario agreed. They went through the door before they ended up on a veranda. Hammering away at it was another Goomba but he looked much older than the previous one. He had a bushy white monobrow and wore a green cap. Mario announced their presence, which caused the Goomba to jump slightly.

"Ooh, you startled me! Hm, yes, Mario, isn't it?" The Goomba asked. Mario nodded.

"I'm Kimani, by the way," Kimani added on. The Goomba nodded before he gave them a warm smile.

"So you've awakened at last! Good! I knew you'd pull through! Call me Goompa. I'm the Goomba grandfather, so...I'm Goompa," He explained.

"Makes sense,"

"I'm sorry, but would you mind giving me the details later? I'm pretty busy fixing the veranda,"

"How are you holding that with no hands?" Kimani asked. Mario lightly nudged him once more.

"Oh, this? Well, we Goombas have very limited telekinesis. We can't do anything crazy but we can use it for things like picking stuff up and whatnot,"

"...Huh..." Kimani said. Mario pushed him out the door before he asked any more personal questions. On their way out of the house, they were stopped by a Goomba wearing a blue hat.

"Oh! Mario... My dad was looking for you. He said to tell you that he finished fixing the gate. So I guess now you can travel east to Toad Town and Shooting Star Summit, huh?" He said. Mario was wondering if the entirety of the world knew about his destination but he opted to simply nod and walk outside where Goompapa (as the Goomba had mentioned) was standing next to a fully fixed gate. Next to him was another Goomba with a pink bow.

"Hoo! What a job! Sorry to have kept you waiting. The gate is finally fixed. If you take this road straight ahead, you'll eventually reach Toad Town, the home of Princess Peach's Castle. I believe that Shooting Star Summit is just beyond there," He explained. The two of them nodded before Goompapa looked just a tad bit sad.

"It's too bad you can't stay... I feel like I just met you! But duty calls, I know. Come back and visit if you can," He solemnly asked.

"Best of luck, Mario!" The other Goomba said. Mario recognized her voice. She was the one to find him and Kimani in the first place. Mario promised to visit before he thanked them for their help. Before he could open the gate and finally start his quest, a loud cackle rang out from the air. All heads looked up as Kammy was seen flying above.

"Bleah heh heh heh... Ah, my instincts were right... Mario... and the other one... I can't believe you're on your feet after taking such a beating from King Bowser. You're hardy ones, all right. I was smart to come here to check on you two," Kammy rambled. Kimani and Mario got into a fighting stance. The girl Goomba tilted her head as she looked at Kammy.

"Whuh... what? What's that, Daddy!? What's that weird flying thing?" She asked. Kimani snorted loudly while Mario's mustache twitched slightly. Kammy looked very offended by the comment.

"Weird? You rude little... I am a beautiful Koopa with a beautiful name: Kammy Koopa!" She announced, flourishing her wand for dramatic effect.

"Eh. 5 out of 10 at best," Kimani inputted.

"Hmmmph! I wish I had time to teach you a lesson, brat! But no," Kammy started, causing Kimani to grab his chest in minor offense, "Mario! Hear this! It is useless for you to try to save Princess Peach. Ridiculous! Laughable! As you have seen, King Bowser is more powerful than even you can deal with this time. Here's a gift from him!"

With a wave of her wand, she caused a giant yellow block to come crashing down on the gate, which caused everyone to fly up into the air with panicked expressions.

"Nyeah heh heh heh! Mario! You will kneel and weep when you see the wonderful changes King Bowser made. Your world is ours now! Bleah heh ho hyuck heh heh HA!" She cackled as she flew off. Goompapa looked utterly devastated at the ruined gate.

"Ummmmmm... I just fixed that gate..." He moaned. Everyone shared looks before he bluntly told everyone not to say the word, gate to him. Kimani questioned his attachment to the gate but he got a hardened stare in return, causing him to sweatdrop.

"Wait... Kammy Koopa, that fiend! Did you hear what she said about the princess?" He asked. The two of them nodded.

"It didn't sound good. I hope nothing's happened to her..."

"...Do you want to tell him or me?" Kimani asked Mario. Mario sighed before he gave a brief summary of what had happened. Goompapa jumped in shock.

"Wha... Wha... What!? Bowser went and kidnapped Princess Peach?! Again?! Oh, unbelievable! And now you have to go to Shooting Star Summit and help save her, right?" He asked once more. They nodded yet again.

"Ummmm... This could be a problem,"

"You think?" Kimani retorted.

"Dad, we've just gotta do something, right? Mario's gotta save the princess! Nobody else can do it!" The girl Goomba exclaimed. Kimani frowned at the comment but Mario told him that he was grateful for his help, which cheered him up slightly.

"Ummmmmmm... Oh, here's an idea! Maybe we can break this block with Goompa's big Hammer!" Goompapa offered. Kimani waved a hand as he flicked his necklace, causing his hands and feet to gain an aura. Mario looked surprised.

"Nonsense. I can bust this block easily," He said as his right hand started glowing a bit brighter. He then swung at the block. His fist connected to the block but it didn't break. Kimani sat there for a second before he retracted his arm, shaking it.

"...So, hammer?"

"I don't understand. I should be able to break that easily!... Did I get weaker?" Kimani muttered, noting that he took damage from the punch. He only took one, which left him with 9 HP out of his 10. Mario suggested that the Star Rod was the culprit for his weakened state. Now that he thought about it, he felt weaker himself. Great... Not only had Bowser buffed himself, he even found a way to weaken himself, Kimani, and his friends. Goompapa told them to go see Goompa and ask him for his hammer. The two of them bolted towards the house, eager to get this quest started. Once they ran to the door, they entered and went out the second door. Outside, they didn't see Goompa. As a matter of fact, they didn't notice the veranda either. Mario and Kimani shared a look.

"...Fu-YAAAHHH!" Kimani got out before they both fell.

Goomba Village- Playground

The two heroes slowly floated down before they landed softly on the ground. They quickly sprung to their feet before they shared another look.

"...Oh right. Paper..." Kimani deadpanned. Mario sourly wished that his first fall was that smooth before they continued to the right, passing a few bushes and trees until they found an exit. However, another yellow block... blocked their path. Laying on the ground next to it was Goompa.

"Oh, my back... Hm? Who's that? That you, Mario? Kimani?" He groaned before he noticed the two. He got up and approached them.

"I remember a great crashing noise and then the veranda collapsed and I fell. Did you fall, too? Just stepped out the door into thin air, did you?" He asked. The two of them looked very embarrassed. Goompa chuckled.

"Well, we're all OK. Problem is, we can't get home because that block is in the way," He started, walking over and inspecting the block, "This block... This block shouldn't be here. Well, this is a problem for us,"

"We could probably get past it if Mario borrowed your hammer," Kimani offered with Mario nodding rapidly.

"...Huh? A Hammer? Oh, of course! Um... Where did it go?" He asked, looking around the area.

"I was using it to fix the veranda, so it's likely to be around here somewhere... Hm! Nowhere to be seen. I guess it must have fallen somewhere over there," He motioned towards a large area to the left with countless bushes, "Mario, Kimani, we'd better look for it,"

Mario, Kimani, and Goompa trudged back the way they came. Goompa told them his hammer was most likely in this area. He somehow showed them a picture of it and told them to check the bushes by "pressing A when an ! was over their heads," Kimani and Mario gave him a weird look but started looking through the bushes regardless. Kimani found mostly coins but no hammer. Mario was the same but once he checked the last bush to the left, he found the Hammer. He raised it high in victory with Kimani fist-pumping in the background.

"You found the Hammer! Mario can do the Hammer attack now! You can smash a yellow block with this Hammer! You might need a helping hand however..."

Goompa walked over and confirmed that was his hammer. He told Mario that it could be used to break yellow blocks and hit trees, causing items to fall out. He also mentioned something about a B button but they ignored him. Mario gave it a test drive by attacking the nearby blocks and trees. He got a decent amount of coins from most of them but the last one he attacked caused a doll to fall out of it.

"Oh! Well now! I believe that's the dolly Goombaria said she lost! She'll no doubt be overjoyed if you give it back to her. So many people lose things all over the place, you know. It almost makes one feel like looking around everywhere..." Goompa mentioned. The two noticed the obvious foreshadowing in that statement but didn't say anything as they got to the path leading toward the block. Goompa scrambled ahead but something hit him, launching him back to the group. A small Koopa still in the egg appeared from the other side.

"Who are you guys!? This is my playground, idiots!" The kid yelled at them.

"This is kind of a crap playground..." Kimani deadpanned. He was ignored, however.

"Nobody sets foot in here without my permission! Nobody! Prepare to start crying at the feet of Master Jr. Troopa!" The Koopa known as Jr. Troopa yelled, causing Kimani and Mario to start battling him. Kimani stood next to Mario while Jr. Troopa stood on the far right.

"Mario, this is Jr. Troopa. He's the boss of a neighborhood gang. A bit of a bully, obviously. He's more bark than bite. You can beat him easily. Just boost yourself up and don't take any lip! I'll stay right here behind you and watch your progress," Goompa informed him. Mario nodded before he decided to give his hammer a try. He walked up to Jr. and raised his hammer, whacking him for 1 damage afterward. Jr returned the favor with a jump attack, dealing 1 back. Kimani cracked his knuckles before he Struck Jr., dealing 1 damage as well.

"Oh, excellent! Good moves! Go on!" Goompa cheered from behind. Kimani looked delighted... until he got clonked upside the head, taking 1 damage. Mario got revenge for him with another hammer, but he got attacked back as well. Kimani used another Strike, which took another point of health away from him, but he got jump-attacked seconds after, leaving him with 7. Mario had 8 himself. They had no idea how much health Jr. had. They went through 2 more cycles, which caused Kimani's health to fall to 5, and Mario was at 6, which put Kimani in Danger.

"Keep it up, boys! You almost have him!" Goompa cheered. Jr. stamped his foot in frustration. Mario whacked him once more.

"All right, you asked for it! Say hello to Jr. Troopa's special attack! Full power!" He then charged at Mario, ramming into him for 2 damage. Mario grumbled as Kimani roundhoused him for 1. Jr. charged again, assaulting Kimani for 2 damage, leaving him with 3 HP. With one last hammer attack, Jr. fell over. From his body, many green orbs with stars in them flew out of him and got absorbed by Kimani and Mario. Mario wagged his finger tauntingly before he fixed his hat while Kimani dusted himself off before he crossed his arms, a smug grin on his face.

"Mario, that was wonderful fighting! You got Star Points! You get Star Points every time you beat an enemy. Every time you save up 100 Star Points, you'll go up a level. Always try hard to get points!" Goompa informed him. Mario kept this in mind before Jr. got back up.

"Shoooooot! I was winning, too! I'll be back, Mario! You too, Shorty! I mean it, I'll be back!" Jr. promised before he ran away. Kimani yelled bloody murder from the short comment while Mario just sighed. He calmed down Kimani before they continued to the area. Mario walked up to the block, reared his hammer back, and brought it down on the block, shattering it into a million pieces... or so he thought. In reality, all Mario did was send enough vibrations within his body to cause his teeth to chatter.

"Eh? Not strong enough? Well... Kimani. You seem pretty strong. Why don't you give Mario a hand," Goompa offered. Kimani shrugged before he joined Mario. They nodded before they both attacked at the same time, breaking the block. Mario and Kimani shared a high-five before Mario noticed a ? block floating nearby so he hit it for some coins and then assaulted the nearby tree just because. A Mushroom fell from it, which Mario happily took. They then continued down the opened path, finding a block with a heart in it.

"Another block? Mario?" Kimani asked, looking at him. Mario explained that this one was a Heart Block and that it would fully restore their HP and FP. Kimani nodded before Mario hit it, getting his health back. Kimani followed suit, healing as well before they continued. Kimani noticed a stone block to the south so he and Mario attempted to break it. Their combined strength wasn't enough to break it, however. Goompa mentioned that his dinky hammer wasn't in the best shape so breaking stuff that strong was out of the question. The two of them pouted but moved on nonetheless. They walked towards the north where a couple of ledges leading up to a brick block and a springboard were located. Mario and Kimani scrambled up the ledges, broke the block and Mario launched himself up to the last cliff where a Fire Flower was located. Mario came back down and showed the two his find before they continued to the east. Reaching the new area, they noticed the many jumps they had to deal with, which wasn't too bad, but they did spot Goombas in the distance. Goompa walked in front of them, looking himself.

"Heads up, boys! I see bad Goombas ahead. They're loyal to Bowser. If they see you, they'll attack you without hesitation," He warned.

"Bah. They can't handle us," Kimani boasted. Mario nodded. Goompa smiled before he gained a light bulb.

"Here's an idea. If you happen to strike them in the field with your attacks, you'll get the First Strike when you enter the battle. Striking first really helps when it comes to battling,"

"We'll keep this in mind. Thanks Goompa," Kimani thanked as Mario leaped onto the Goomba's head, getting the First Strike. He followed up with another jump once he actually entered battle, easily defeating the Goomba.

"Nicely done!" Goompa cheered as Mario gained some coins and star points for the two of them.

"Hey! Save some of the fighting for me!" Kimani scolded. Mario gave him a sour look before he ushered towards the next Goomba, which was wearing a spiked helmet. Kimani spun and swiftly kicked the Goomba in the face, getting the First Strike. Before he could attack again, Goompa stopped him.

"Hold on there. That Goomba has a spiked helmet! Mario, your jumps won't do anything to them and you'll get hurt for trying too! Kimani, not all spiked enemies will be safe for you to attack so keep that in mind,"

"Got it!" Kimani said, assaulting the Goomba with a swift punch, ending the battle. Mario clapped, causing Kimani to bow in response. They jumped up two more ledges before Kimani noticed a path to the left. He jumped up two more ledges, defeated another Goomba, and shook a tree for a coin before he ended up finding a yellow diamond gem. He joined Mario and Goompa, showing them the gem he found. Neither of them knew what it was so he gave it to Mario to pocket before they noticed a Goomba with wings. Neither Mario nor Kimani could reach it. As they wondered how to get it, the Goomba then swooped down and kicked Kimani in the face, getting the First Strike. Once the battle started, they noticed another flying Goomba. Kimani growled at the flying Goomba that kicked him before he went to attack him, but when he went to attack, it simply flew out of reach, causing Kimani to fall over.

"Ah, Paragoombas. Listen up, boys. Your Hammer or Strike attacks won't reach enemies in the air. Mario will have to Jump on them to ground them,"

"Seriously? Man..." Kimani sighed, getting kicked by both Paragoombas, which took him down to 7 HP. Mario helped him out by Jumping on the front one, dealing 1 damage to it but more importantly, making his wings disappear. The two Goombas attacked him in their separate ways before Kimani clobbered the now Goomba, ending it. He got kicked once more but Mario jumped on that one as well, getting Headbonked afterward which sent him to 7 as well. Kimani finished that one as well before anyone else got hurt. After collecting their money, points, and even a Mushroom that one of them dropped, they finally appeared back in Goomba Village. Mario walked over to the nearby gate and tried to open it, but it didn't budge. Goompa came over and did... something, which caused it to open. The two kids immediately ran over, glomping Goompa. He informed them that he was alright thanks to Kimani and Mario.

"Goompa! Where've you been? I looked outside and...wow! Both you and the veranda were just plain gone!" The Goomba with the blue hat exclaimed.

"Goompa, I was very, very worried about you! Really worried!" Goombaria followed up. Goompa chuckled

"Sorry, kids, I apologize. I didn't mean to make you fret. You just take it easy now. I'm back safe and sound," He told them. He turned to Mario and Kimani.

" Now! Before I forget, I've decided to give you something, Mario. Wait here a minute. You too, Kimani," He told them, running into the house. While they were waiting, Goombaria noticed the doll hanging out of Mario's overall pockets. She asked if she could have it back, to which Kimani instantly said no. Mario swatted him before he nodded, giving the doll to Goombaria. Goombaria squealed before she gave Mario another gem like the one Kimani found earlier. Mario gave Kimani a sidewards glance afterwards.

"I was kidding! Why would I keep a doll away from her!?" He defended. Mario only stared at him long enough to make him squirm, which caused him to chuckle. Goombario walked up next.

"You always seem to beat up your enemies... Do you work out?" He asked. Mario simply flexed.

"I study self-defense by reading books by the masters and listening to Dad and Goompa. And, I also exercise every day so I can be strong like you! It's starting to show, too! I'm getting big muscles!"

"You're literally a head pretty much..." Kimani deadpanned. Yet again, Mario's elbow collided with Kimani's side. Luckily the Goomba child didn't seem to hear him.

"Yeah, Goombario's head is hard as a rock now! Tee hee! When he does his Headbonk move, it really, really hurts!" Goombaria co-signed. Goombario blushed slightly.

"Oh, be quiet, Goombaria! You're embarrassing me! Of course, it IS true..."

"Still wondering how you can exercise when you're just a head," Kimani said a bit louder. Mario facepalmed.

"Hard work, determination... and more hard work," Goombario answered. Kimani nodded.

"Fair enough," He said as Goompa came back. In his... hands were a badge and another shard, only this one was red.

"Sorry to have kept you waiting," Goompa said.

"It's OK, Goompa! We're just rapping with Mario..." Goombario told him.

"Oh. "Rapping," huh? Sorry. I wanted to give this to Mario," Goompa trailed, giving the Power Jump badge to Mario.

"This is called a Badge. If you wear this, you'll be able to do a Power Jump, which means you'll be able to do a lot more damage with your Jump attack. But listen here, and listen well. You'll only be able to do it if you're wearing the Badge. You'd better try it first. Putting Badges on and taking them off is a vital skill. Would you like a quick lesson in how to use the Badges you collect during your travels?" Goompa explained. Mario shook his head no. Something as simple as that didn't need explanations. Goompa told him about Badge Points regardless and Mario noticed the badge had used 1 out of his total of 3.

"Do I get a badge?" Kimani asked.

"...I only had the one. But I did find this gem lying next to you, however. Is it yours?" Goompa told him, showing him the shard. Instead of a grateful expression, Kimani groaned loudly, earning question marks from everyone.

"D-did I offend you?" He asked. Kimani quickly shook his head.

"No, not at all. But if these shards are here, then that means my powers have gotten scattered across the whole world... again..." He sighed. Mario placed a hand on his back before he fist-pumped with the other.

"Really? Man, I swear. You're nicer in person than in the stories I heard," Kimani admitted, accepting the shard. He smashed it on his chest afterward, glowing for a moment before it died down. Mario questioned this as he placed the badge on his boots as Goompa instructed.

"Oh, that's how I use those. My friends also... Oh man, that means their powers are scattered as well..." Kimani groaned. Mario's hand rose once more.

"Oh, uh I can use my Power Strike attack again. I basically hit things harder... Oh, I can also Counter again. Nice!"

"By the way... I heard from Gooma that you two are trying to rescue the princess from Bowser's clutches," Goompa asked. Both of them nodded.

"Oh yeah! Mario can beat Bowser with one hand tied behind his back!" Goombario exclaimed. Mario really hoped that was true in the near future.

"Hush, now, Goombario. Mario, please keep my Hammer. It should serve you well. If I were just a bit younger, I'd accompany you on your trip. I'd have done some damage! The years have started to weigh on me, though. I tell you, this lower back pain..." Goompa rambled. Kimani looked like he was about to say something rude so Mario quickly covered his mouth. What was with this person? Mario wondered if the others were like this and he couldn't help but question his endangered sanity.

"Adventure... you're so lucky! Princess-rescuing is so cool! I really want to be an adventurer, too, someday!" Goombario said.

"Why wait? Just come with us," Kimani said. Mario turned and gave him a look. Was he serious? He couldn't ask him that! It was bad enough that Kimani and the others had gotten mixed up in this. He didn't want to get anyone else involved and put them in danger. To Mario's surprise, Goompa seemed to be all for this idea. Before Mario could say anything, Goombario had gotten permission to join Mario's party. Kimani seemed to read Mario's face.

"Relax Mar. Goompa wouldn't have allowed it if he didn't believe Goombario was tough enough. Besides, with that Star Rod, Bowser's a real problem. We honestly need all the help we can gather," Kimani told him. Mario pouted slightly. He had a very fair point. His thoughts flashed back to the previous battle with the Koopa King. Once he used that Star Rod, none of his attacks worked while Bowser only got stronger. Sighing, he glanced at Goombario, who seemed to be waiting for Mario's input. With a smile, Mario nodded, allowing Goombario to join his party.

"Yes! Oh yeah! Mario! You won't regret this!" He exclaimed.

"Goombario has joined your party! This knowledgeable Goomba can give you information about the area you're in! He can also give you a small bio about anyone you meet! In battle, he attacks with his powerful head via a Headbonk, or he can Tattle on foes, giving Mario and Co. much-needed information such as HP, Attack, Defense, and strategies against them!"

"Mario, I know Goombario will prove to be a worthy companion. Well, I think it's about time for my nap. I'll be in the house. Good-byes have a way of making this old Goomba get weepy," Goompa said, tearing up slightly. He was followed by Goombaria as well. Goombario looked sad for a moment but it quickly passed as he bounced up and down, eager to start the adventure.

"This is so cool! Mario! Let's go!" Goombario exclaimed. Mario chuckled at the young Goomba's enthusiasm as he and Kimani broke the block. Goompapa wished them a safe adventure before the three of them walked out to the next area. But not before Mario hit the nearby tree, earning a Goomnut for his trouble.

Goomba Road

The group walked into the new area, noting the Goombas patrolling around. Kimani looked at the nearby warning, which had a picture of a Goomba on it. Said picture peeled off the wall, surprising Kimani. Mario came to his aid however with a First Strike, sending them to battle. Goombario stood behind Mario while Kimani stood next to Mario as usual.

"Hey, Mario, during a battle, you can change the order we attack in with Z. I can attack first if you want. I don't mind at all! Just keep it in mind, OK?" Goombario told him. Since Mario had already drained 1 from him, he decided to let Goombario Tattle on him. Goombario glanced at him for a moment before he nodded.

"Ok, this is a Goomba. Goombas are what you'd call "small fries." Actually, they're pretty much the smallest fries. ...Hey, wait! I'm one of 'em! Max HP: 2, Attack Power: 1, and Defense Power: 0. You can jump on them or whack 'em with the Hammer. These guys are old school. They've been around since you were in Super Mario Bros.!" Goombario rambled. Mario nodded, mentally visualizing a health bar under the Goomba. It only had 1. Mario simply hopped on it, ending it. Kimani didn't complain like last time, which Mario was grateful for, but he did run ahead and hit the next Goomba in the face with a kick. Goombario winced at the motion as Kimani attacked once more, taking out the first one. He got Headbonked for his troubles by the second one that was nearby, which put his HP at 6. Mario jumped on the Goomba while Goombario got a running start before he jumped up and headbutted the Goomba, ending it.

"Oooh, nice one," Kimani commented.

"Thanks! I can't tell you how long I practiced my Headbonks!" Goombario exclaimed. Mario grinned at the two, happy to see them getting along. He then eyed their health. Kimani was running low and Mario himself could use a pick-me-up.

"Hmm? What's up Mar?" Kimani asked once Mario whistled. Mario reached into his overalls and pulled out a Mushroom. He then explained that these have healing properties. Kimani got what he was saying and waited until Mario split it in half and gave one to him while he ate his own half. Both of them healed back to max.

"Wow, that was actually really good," Kimani admitted.

"Yeah, Mushrooms always taste great! You should try them with Syrup!" Goombario told him.

"...Ain't it cannibalism for you to eat Mushrooms?"

"Nope. Different type. Also, they aren't sentient,"

"Ah," Kimani grunted. Mario chuckled at the conversation as he hit two ? Blocks, earning a bit more money before a Paragoomba flew around. Mario got an idea. He waited until it swooped at him before he clobbered it with his hammer, earning a First Strike. Once in battle, he saw that there were two of them. The first one's wings fell off so he wasn't a problem. Mario then asked Goombario to Tattle on the last Paragoomba while he jumped on the first one, defeating it.

"Uh...This is a Paragoomba. Obviously, Paragoombas are Goombas with wings. Max HP: 2, Attack Power: 1, Defense Power: 0. You can't hit 'em with the Hammer while they're airborne unless you bait them in the field. If you damage 'em, they'll fall to the ground and become ordinary Goombas." Goombario told him, deep in thought. Mario thanked him, getting kicked in the head afterward.

"Bah... I can't do anything.." Kimani said, banefully looking at the Paragoomba.

"Just guard this turn. No need to take any unnecessary damage," Goombario offered. Kimani frowned but did so anyway, bringing his arms up in defense. The Paragoomba crashed into him but Kimani's guard was too strong to break. To make things even better, Kimani was able to Counter, attacking the flying menace with a swift jab. It dealt 1 damage to it and even dewinged him. Mario applauded him while Goombario cheered.

"Yes, I am awesome but we got somewhere to be so..." Kimani told them. They both sweatdropped before Mario Jumped on the Goomba, winning the battle. They did their win animations before they continued to the next area. There were a few things that caught a different member's attention. Goombario had noticed the nearby enemy and had tensed up as a result, Kimani glared at the far-away sign, not entirely over the earlier jump scare but Mario eyed the Red ? Block. The three of them started speaking before they stopped and looked at each other. After a few looks, they decided to let Goombario go first.

"I noticed that there's an incoming enemy," He simply said.

"There's a Mushroom on that sign... but..." Kimani started, trailing off.

"You don't want to get attacked again?"

"No! I-I just don't want you guys to get ambushed, you know?"

"Right..." Goombario teased. Before Kimani could pick him up and hurl him at the nearby Goomba, Mario expressed interest in the Red ? Block. This caused the other two to look at it as well. Goombario started tattling after that.

"Mmmmmm... Ah, here we go! These are Badge Blocks. They hold a badge within," Goombario said. Mario and Kimani gained an excited look as they ran forward. Mario got the First Strike with a hammer shot. Once the battle started, another Goomba was with him. Mario almost assaulted the Spiked Goomba, but Kimani stopped him.

"Goombario hasn't given us the details about that one," Kimani told him. Mario facepalmed before he apologized.

"No sweat, Mario. I don't entirely blame you. Spiked Goombas are pretty dangerous. Spiked Goombas are Goombas with spikes on their heads. Max HP: 2, Attack Power: 2, and Defense Power: 0. Whatever you do, don't jump on their spikes or you'll get hurt or even paralyzed!"

"Paralyzed?" Kimani asked as Mario then hammered the Spiked Goomba to obliteration. He got Headbonked afterward, sending his health to 8.

"Well, yeah. Have you ever hurt yourself so bad that you just... lock up?" Goombario said as Kimani flipped and dropped his heel on the Goomba's head, dealing 1 damage. He got bonked back.

"...Yeah, actually," He answered as Mario finished the battle. The three of them continued forward, finally reaching the Red ? Block. Mario jumped and hit it, causing a red badge with a yellow design on it to pop out. Another shard fell out as well but this one was blue. Mario grabbed the badge while Kimani picked up the shard, pocketing it. Mario asked him why he didn't use it as he equipped the Close Call Badge as Goombario told him.

"Oh, this isn't mine. This is one of my friends. I think it's Jordan from the color of it." Kimani told him, gaining a worried look. Mario raised his hand in concern.

"Just worried. I have no idea where they landed... I'm even worried about Firebrand and the gang as well,"

"Firebrand? Who's that?" Goombario asked. Kimani glanced at him before he pulled down his shirt slightly, showing his necklace.

"Uh, the story about this is rather long but to summarize, me and my friends have basically the souls of others in our re- I mean, charms. They can usually speak whenever they want to and they can even come out freely but he's been quiet ever since Bowser," He explained. Mario processed what he was told. After a moment, he opened his mouth, asking another question.

"Yeah, actually. These powers I have aren't mine, but more so his. Same with my friends,"

"Maybe he's still recovering?" Goombario offered.

"...Yeah, maybe so. Hopefully, that shard gave him some much-needed energy," Kimani said as he started walking again. Mario gave him a sympathetic look as they followed after him. Mario walked in front of Kimani, offering to check the sign out for him. Like the Goomba previously, the Mushroom peeled off and fell into Mario's arms. Kimani crossed his arms and grumbled, earning a laugh from the plumber. He got attacked by a Paragoomba afterward. In battle, they saw that there were three of them. Kimani groaned loudly as a result.

"Hey guys, I remember something Goompa told me during training. If we ever get into a fight with three enemies, we'll earn more Star Points overall. The bonus goes up even more if we battle four people,"

"So getting into a fight with more people can get us stronger faster! High risk, high reward!" Kimani exclaimed, fist-pumping. Mario nodded before he adjusted his hat, jumping on the first Paragoomba and sending it to the ground. Goombario Headbonked the second one, bringing him down as well. Mario endured the three hits, bringing him down to 4, which put him in Danger. Kimani socked one of the Goombas in the jaw, ending it before he got bonked and kicked, dropping his health to 6.

"Mar, heal up. Can't have you dying on me yet!" Kimani exclaimed. Mario shook his head before he took out the Goomba and Goombario attacked the Paragoomba, turning it into a normal one. The Goomba went to Headbonk him but he ended up missing. In Mario's head, a fanfare played and the words "Lucky" appeared. He glanced at his Close Call badge, seeing it glow for a split second before dimming. Kimani roundhoused the other Goomba, taking it out and ending the battle. They got a Mushroom for their troubles, which Kimani split and shared with Mario. He even gave a little piece to Goombario as well. The three of them ate their snacks, healing before they reached the next area. Floating nearby was a Heart Block. Kimani and Mario groaned at the sight, hitting it before they kept walking. Nearby was a spring that would help them up to the next level. Mario noted that this would lead them to Toad Town. Finally, they were close to familiar gr-

"Hey hey! Hold it right there! You! Yeah you, suspicious guy! Don't move!" A voice shouted from off-screen. Well, so much for that... Mario sighed as a red and blue Goomba appeared. They were bigger than normal, being the same height as Kimani and Mario. The Red Goomba looked up and down at Mario before he nodded.

"Aha, you're Mario! I knew it. You can't go past here, Mr. Big Shot." He started.

"Uh, are you blind? That's Luigi," Kimani told him. Mario rapidly nodded before he did a bad impression of Luigi, making Kimani and Goombario facepalm. Far away, Luigi sneezed. Red didn't fall for it, however.

"It's a direct order from the Goomba King. That's right! I'm sorry, but the only way by is through the Goomba Bros. That's me, Red Goomba, and my brother, Blue Goomba. Let's get him, Blue Goomba!" Red finished.

"Oh yeah! Let's do it, my red brother!" Blue exclaimed before they bum-rushed them, starting the battle. Mario didn't have time for this so he tapped the badge on his boot, causing them to glow before he jumped on the Blue Goomba, dealing 3 damage. Goombario wracked his brain for the information on Blue afterward.

"This is Blue Goomba. He's the younger of the two notorious Goomba Bros. Max HP is 6, Attack Power: 1, and Defense Power: 0. As you heard in his little speech, he's one of the Goomba King's men. He doesn't look that healthy. He's weaker than his brother," Goombario told him. Blue looked very offended while Kimani tried hard not to bust a gut.

"Mario! How'd you like some of this?" Blue retorted, eager to prove them wrong. Blue and Red charged and Headbonked Mario, dealing the mighty, terrible, and surprising total... of 2 damage. Kimani cackled while Mario allowed a smirk to appear on his face. Blue pouted before Kimani focused for a second, allowing the aura around his right foot to grow. He then leaped and spun three times before he kicked Blue in the face with his Power Strike, dealing another 3 to him. Since he had exactly 3, this was perfect. Blue fell over as a result.

"Blue, Blue Goomba! Gaaah! My little brother! You'll pay for that, Mario! You too, Shrimp!" Red exclaimed, attacking Kimani with a Headbonk. Mario used another Power Jump while Goombario Tattled again, just for the heck of it. Kimani just seethed from the short comment.

"This is Red Goomba. He's the older of the two notorious Goomba Bros. Max HP: 7, Attack Power: 1, and Defense Power: 0. The Goomba King ordered him to try to stop you. You can take this guy, no prob. He has just a little more HP than an ordinary Goomba,"

"So more than you?" Kimani heckled. Goombario stuck his non-existing nose up in response as Mario got bonked again, placing him at 7. Kimani chucked as he Power Striked Red with his fist, dealing 3 damage to him and putting him at 1. He Headbonked Kimani which put him at 8 but he wasn't worried as Goombario Headbonked him back, sending him to the ground.

"Geeaaaah! I... I'll let you go for now!" Red yelled before he and Blue ran off. Kimani and Mario shared looks before they ran back to the Heart Block, healing before they sprinted towards the spring. Mario spotted a Save Block before he did, so he broke off from Kimani, who launched himself before he saved. After that, he and Goombario double-backed to the spring, launching themselves up and racing after Kimani, who was currently in a battle with two Goombas. He had just finished Power Punching one before the other bonked him. While Kimani rubbed his head, Mario and Goombario jumped in and defeated the other one for him.

"...I had it handled," He deadpanned. Mario snorted before he walked past him. After an uneventful walk, they entered the next area, catching sight of Red and Blue again.

"King Goomba! Help us!" Red yelled, panicking.

"Mario beat us up!" Blue whined. The door opened up before they ran into it with it shutting afterwards. Goombario looked at the castle in front of them with a weird look.

"Hey, look, Mario! See that building over there? I'm pretty sure there used to be a bridge on the other side. I wonder what happened to it," He wondered.

"My guess is someone built this crummy castle on it," Kimani guessed. Mario nodded before Red and Blue appeared from the top of the fortress. From behind them appeared an even bigger Goomba wearing a crown. He had a giant white mustache that Mario had to respect as well as poofy red and white striped pants, which Kimani thought were stupid.

"So, Mario, it's true! You've made it this far. I respect you for that. Unfortunately, this is as far as you'll ever get. Because I, the great and powerful King Goomba, will see to it that you advance no farther!" King Goomba boomed from above.

"You hear that, Mario! No farther! Not one step! Are you scared, little man?" Red heckled.

"Bah ha ha! Yeah, you're scared, all right. You wanna say you're sorry?" Blue added on.

"The only thing sorry is you two clowns!" Kimani shouted back. Red and Blue glared at him as a result.

"Wow... That King Goomba is... really huge! I'm sure he's no match for you, though, Mario... And Kimani! Let's get him!" Goombario said, flabbergasted at the size of King Goomba. He shook it off however as King Goomba and his lackeys jumped off the top, entering battle. From what they could see, Red and Blue were still beaten up from their previous battle, only having 2 HP.

"Beat him up, King Goomba!" Red cheered.

"We've got your back!" Blue exclaimed.

"Leave him to me!" King Goomba roared.

"Hey, Mario! I think maybe we ought to take out the Goomba Bros. first, don't you think? They must be pretty weak since we just finished beating them up back there," Goombario offered.

"Uh yeah, they only have 2 HP right now," Kimani added on. Mario nodded, already gaining an idea. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the Fire Flower from earlier. He planted it into the ground and watched as it turned to the Goombas and started firing out a plethora of fireballs that dealt 3 damage to each of them. Red and Blue were instantly taken out, leaving only the King. Goombario recited the info he had on him.

"Let's see... Ah. This is the Goomba King. He's really big. I mean, look at him! He looks really powerful. Max HP: 20, Attack Power: 1, and Defense Power: 0. He's the boss of Red Goomba and Blue Goomba. Who cares if he's strong? You're much stronger. Gee, I wonder what he ate to become so big? I'd like to be a bit bigger, too..." Goombario said, trailing off with that last part. King Goomba stomped the ground, causing some spiky Goomnuts to fall on Mario, dealing 2 damage to him. Kimani noticed an extra large one over King Goomba so he struck the nearby tree, causing the nut to fall on King Goomba which walloped him for 3 damage. Since he already used his ammo against Mario, King Goomba ran up to Kimani and kicked him in the jaw, knocking him away and dealing 1 damage.

"Ow..." Kimani muttered, rubbing his jaw. Mario returned the favor with a Power Jump and Goombario via a Headbonk, knocking his health to 10.

"Hah... Got some fight in you, huh?" King Goomba panted, kicking Mario in the stomach, knocking him back for 1, placing his health at 7.

"Yeah, we can be pretty stubborn," Kimani said, Power Striking the King in the face, dealing another 3 damage which placed his health also at 7. The King didn't take too kindly to that one. The nuts had grown back at this point so the King stomped again, causing Kimani to be assaulted by the Goomnuts for 2, which like the others, put his health at 7. Mario and Goombario came after him again, causing him to slouch from his low health as he attacked Mario yet again. Kimani finished the fight with a strong flip kick, knocking him out. Once he fell, a whopping 30 Star Points flew from him, getting absorbed into Kimani and Mario. The Star Points were enough for the two of them to level up. Kimani and Mario spun before they crossed their arms and threw out a piece sign respectively. They both had the option to choose either more HP, FP, or BP.

"BP? That means I can wear badges! Haha!" Kimani cheered. Mario smiled before he noticed Kimani's pendant glowing. Mario brought this to Kimani's attention, who looked down. He then tapped it, causing a small ball of fire to float out before it landed on the ground, unfolding into Firebrand. Firebrand more or less looked the same but his eyes were simple lines and his flaming mohawk moved jaggedly.

"Ugh.. my head..." Firebrand muttered, rubbing his head. Mario and Goombario were taken back by the small Eastern Dragon, but Kimani grinned.

"Glad you're alright, Fire,"

"Yeah... when that lightning bolt hit you, it drained almost all of my energy... Didn't have the ability to talk with you or exist. Guess whatever that energy you grabbed helped,"

"Makes me wonder about the others..."

"Yeah..."

"Oh, by the way. Mario, Goombario? This is Firebrand. Firebrand, the others," Kimani introduced as he picked FP for his level-up reward, increasing it by 5 and bringing it to 15. Mario decided to nab more BP, bringing it to 6, before he approached Firebrand, greeting him with a wave.

"Sup," He responded.

"Woah, are you a real dragon?!" Goombario asked, looking him over.

"Yep. As real as they get," He answered. He looked around for a moment before a question mark appeared over his head.

"Wait, where are the others?" He asked.

"Yeah... we got separated when Bowser zapped us so Mario is helping me find them in return for helping him defeat Bowser," Kimani answered.

"Sounds about right,"

"So you'll help us?" Goombario pondered. Firebrand chuckled.

"Don't really have a choice, kid. Me and Pint over here are kind of a package deal. If he already agreed then it's alright in my book," Firebrand told him.

"Firebrand has joined the party! With his fire powers, he can burn his opponents to a crisp! He can use his claws to Swipe at foes or spit out a Fireball to hit distant foes! On the field, Firebrand can spend 1 FP to spit a Fireball at range, earning a First Strike from a safe distance!"

"Glad to have you here, Firebrand!" Goombario exclaimed. Firebrand smirked before King Goomba got up.

"Wh...wh...what!? How could I lose to someone with a weaker mustache than me!?" He exclaimed. He, alongside Red and Blue, then ran into the castle. Mario gasped. Weaker mustache?! How dare he! Mario eyed the nearby tree. In the heat of the moment, he hit it, causing a Star Piece to fall into his hands. He calmed down afterward. Firebrand ended up finding a blue switch tucked away in a bush. At this time, King Goomba appeared from above.

"Uh...Mario! Good fight and all that! I must warn you, however... If you happen to find a strange switch somewhere, you should definitely not press it. It's dangerous. Understand?" He told him. Mario flashed him a thumbs-up, causing him to disappear. Goombario gave him a quizzical look.

"...Were you serious?" He asked. Mario instantly shook his head. There was no way he was going to take orders from someone that dissed his stache. It was just the principle behind it! By now, Firebrand had pushed it anyway, causing King Goomba to appear again.

"Just wanted to remind you not to touch that switch," He said. Mario raised a hand afterward, causing the Goomba's eyes to widen.

"...you WHAT!? YOU ALREADY PRESSED IT?!" He screeched. The castle shook before it disassembled, launching King Goomba and the others away. It then formed into a bridge, which gave them access to the next area.

"Look! The bridge! Now we can cross it and continue our journey. All right!" Goombario cheered. The three of them chuckled before they continued to the next area, gaining both a coin from a tree as well as a Super Shroom from a hidden ? Block on the way. Unbeknownst to them, Kammy was floating above. With a worried glance, she flew off into the sky.

Mario and the gang had reached the next area, which featured a bunch of descending ledges. The group hopped down before Mario's adventure senses started acting up again. He first looked behind them once at the bottom, spotting a ? Block that held a Sleepy Sheep before he ran ahead and bonked a tree, causing a spring to fall. He then leaped on it, which gave him enough height to land on top of the red bridge cover. A chest greeted him. Mario opened it up to find both a Hammer Throw Badge as well as another red shard. Mario leaped back down, giving Kimani the shard while he placed his new badge on his hammer. Kimani smashed the shard against his chest, earning back his Focus Blast ability.

"Huh... Alright. Works different here," Kimani muttered, reading the move details. Apparently, depending on how many turns Kimani used to charge it, his Focus Blast could deal either 3 damage or up to a maximum of 12 if held for 3 turns. Mario whistled before they looked at the entrance to Toad Town. The group shared looks before they nodded, walking towards the town. Mario hoped he could find out exactly what happened to Peach as well as figure out what the Star Spirits needed to talk to him about. With a determined look, he led his party into town, eager to save Peach.

Notable changes from Main Game: (Since we'll be working with a bigger party and have different abilities, I'll be increasing the stats or changing the behaviors of certain enemies and buffing or nerfing badges in various ways. To give you a general idea of what I'm doing, I'll be using enemy stats and new variations from the Paper Mario: Master Quest ROM Hack. -Jr. Troopa, the neighborhood bully is a bit tougher! (+4 HP)

-Firebrand, the spirit of Kimani's amulet and wielder of the Firebrand, joins the team!
