Welcome all to another chapter of Game Jumpers! Last chapter had our heroes sneak into the... less than humble castle of Tubba Blubba. Inside, the group faced a lot of security and tough opponents that kept them on their toes. Eventually, they found a key to his secret but they were found by Tubba Blubba and had to make a mad dash out of the castle. It's only with the help of the town of Dust Devils that they're able to reach the Windy Mill safely. Inside, the group comes face to face with the source of Tubba Blubba's invincible nature. The culprit? His heart, tucked away in safety and remotely guiding the body. With the threat in sight, our heroes prepare to put an end to the ghost-gobbling ghoul. Will they succeed? Only time will tell...

Chapter 15: Open Heart Surgery!

"This is Tubba's Heart. You might say it's the 'heart' of Tubba's secret. Ha!... Sorry, humor calms me down when I'm nervous. Max HP: 40, Attack Power: 6, Defense Power: 0. Tubba's heart doesn't have many attacks, honestly. He'll either ram us for 6 damage, and it'll stun you for a turn if he gets a solid hit, or call antibodies to attack the party for 18 damage. The kicker with that last attack is if the main target dodges, they'll miss the rest of the party as well. Weird, I know, but I'm not complaining. Austin's sick dodging skills can help him avoid the attack, but he has to time it. No using your auto dodge for that one and Bow can phase through it. So if you're the target, you're in charge of ensuring the party doesn't get hit by that scary move!... no pressure, however..." Goombario Tattled as soon as they entered the battle.

"Young Masters, please keep in mind that the heart is on a pedestal, so any ground-based moves won't hit it. Lady Bombette's bomb attacks or Sir Kooper's various shell techniques will be unusable against him. Master Dylan, please mind your transformations, as Master Kimani's normal attacks can't reach him," Bootler said.

"Really? He doesn't look that high up," Kooper muttered. Mario shrugged but fixed his cap as he decided to take out the help, as they always end up being the real problem during boss fights. He checked his inventory, choosing to make use of some of his items. He used one of his Snowman Dolls, throwing it above the group. The Snowman grew about 4 sizes and landed on the enemy party, dealing 4 damage to everyone. The Clubbas were left with 16, while Tubba's Heart had 36 HP. The Clubbas came after Mario with some normal bonks, which he blocked, taking his HP down to 17.

"Heh heh heh heh. I'm going to do this great attack that's impossible to avoid. It's not like you can just dodge it because you're a thief, or you can phase through it or something. I just have to prepare a bit, so hang on for a second," Tubba's Heart said, glowing with power.

"Oh, that's the attack I was talking about earlier. It's too bad we don't have anything to, you know, phase through it or someone that has the ability to dodge unblockable attacks," Goombario sarcastically said. The heart laughed in satisfaction while everyone else sweatdropped. With the attack announced, the group decided to let Dylan go next. Dylan shot an Ion Beam at the Clubbas, dealing 4 more damage to them before he Quickened Austin for the next turn. All together, he used 10 FP, bringing him down to 35. Bow used Outta Sight, draining another 4 from his reserves as Bow made him intangible. When the heart sent the antibodies to the party, since Dylan didn't get hit, the antibodies didn't see the party as a threat and left them alone as well.

"What!? How'd you dodge that!?" Tubba's Heart exclaimed. Mario wasn't too sure of the science behind the attack missing them, but he was glad Goombario knew what he was talking about earlier. The Clubbas tried to hit him as well, but they obviously missed. The turn rolled over to Austin next, who had Venom swap with Ivory. Once in, Ivory hyped herself up, starting Tag Team and draining 2 FP from Austin's 30 before she Pounced on the front Clubba, leaving it with 8 HP. Austin used his first turn to Triple Strike the front Clubba, taking it out. When the next turn rolled around, he spent 5 more FP, putting it at 23 before he looked up and hurled countless daggers into the sky. After he was done, they began to rain on the enemies, dealing 1 damage to the remaining enemies. Since it counted as Austin's attack, Ivory followed up with Pounces on both enemies. The Clubba was down to 9 HP, while the heart was reduced to 33 HP. The Heart started to charge up another Antibody swarm attack while the Clubba went to multi-attack Austin, but he dodged every swing. The turn order refreshed, and Dylan and Bow phased back to reality. Bow had to rest, so she was unable to swap around or be used this turn order around. Austin started this turn order this time, swapping to his bow and using his double action to fire an arrow at the back Clubba twice. He crit the second time, and Ivory followed up with two strikes of her own, taking out the Clubba. She used her actual action to just Pounce on Tubba's Heart, dealing 4 damage and putting his HP at 29. Tubba's Heart sent out the Antibody swarm again, but Austin paid good attention to how they flew at him before he hit the deck in the last possible second. The swarm flew into each other, vibrating in minor annoyance before they disappeared, again leaving the others be.

"Son of a Goomnut!" He yelled. Austin wiped the sweatdrop of his face. The dagger rain and Ivory's follow-up attack sent him even lower, dropping him to 26 HP. Mario went next, jumping twice on the Heart, dealing another 4 damage to it, lowering it to 22 HP. Goombario Headbonked another 4 from it, changing that number to 18. Tubba's Heart got mad and leaped from his pedestal, slapping Mario in the face with his... artery, dealing 6 since he wasn't expecting the hit to be a slap and Stunning him for a turn. His health went down to 10 as a result, placing him in Danger. Dylan went next, using a Jolt/Ion Beam combo to tack on 7 more damage, putting the heart at 11. Austin's Dagger Rain put him at 10 HP. Tubba's Heart charged up another Antibody swarm as a result. When the next turn refresh rolled by, Mario was automatically selected since he was stunned, so he got swarmed by the Antibodies, taking 18 damage and knocking him out. The Antibodies came after Dylan and Austin as well, and Austin wasn't able to avoid it this time around, so they both took damage from the attack. Dylan took 18, while Austin took 20.

"How... Embarrassing..." Austin muttered before he fell over on his face. Austin's amulet flashed before Venom appeared. Ivory stayed behind him while Ebony appeared and pulled him to a safe spot, staying with him. Everyone could see that Venom actually had health now, albeit only a measly 10 HP.

"Wait, why does Venom have HP now?" Kooper asked, from the safety of the sidelines.

"When Austin goes down, Venom takes charge in his stead," Ebony told him.

"That's handy. So Austin basically has a built-in Life Shroom,"

"Yeah," Ebony answered once more. Dylan was ruffled with his now 12 HP. Venom decided to go next, having Ivory tag out with Ebony and having her use her Smelling Salts to bring back Austin with 10 HP.

"Zrk! Huh!?" Austin exclaimed, snapping up to his feet. When he noticed Ivory and Venom missing, along with being 10 FP shorter than he remembered, he put 2 and 2 together. He glanced over at the downed Mario and the vibrating Dylan before he glared at the heart. He did some quick math before he gambled on a Triple Strike and got 2 lucky strikes, dealing precisely 10 damage, finishing off the Heart. Rather than perishing, the Heart just quivered in pain.

"OW! I gotta get outta here!" Tubba's Heart screeched before he ran out the room. As he did so, Mario groaned and rubbed his head, standing up with 1 HP to his name. He looked around before asking what happened.

"You got stunned and then targeted for the Antibody attack. You and Austin went down as a result. The Heart ran off," Bombette summarized. Mario rolled his eyes at the sheer bad luck before he looked at his items. He had no idea what would happen next, so he passed out many items. Mario went ahead and ate the Whacka Bump, Dylan got 2 of the Super Shrooms, and Austin got 2 Maple Shrooms. Once everyone was done eating, they were full on HP and FP. (Well, except for Dylan, as FP restoration did not affect him, so he was still sitting at 31 FP.)

"After that vital organ!" Bombette exclaimed. Everyone nodded before they rushed out the door, seeing the heart just exit the hallway. They blitzed through the halls until they reached the spring and launched themselves through the well they had entered earlier. The heart bodychecked the door open just as Dylan lunged at him, just missing him and bonking his face on the doorframe. Mario lagged behind a bit to help him up, and Austin tried to snag him as well, but he barely missed himself. The heart quickly bounced up to his main body before he commanded it to open up. Once the body opened his mouth, he leaped inside, getting swallowed and causing Tubba Blubba's body to glow for a second.

"Oh YEAH! Now I'm feeling good! With my heart and body united, there's no way to beat me!" He boasted.

"Yeah, right! You just became a bigger target to hit, is all! Come on, Boys! Let's reintroduce ourselves!" Bombette argued back; her fuse lit in anger. The others nodded before they entered battle once more.

"Alright, guys! Let's nip this in the bud! This is Tubba Blubba, now reunited with his heart. This is finally his true self. Max HP: 40, Attack Power: varies, Defense power: 0. This will be a battle of time! I say that because after each of Tubba's turns, he'll charge his power, getting a 1 to his attack each turn! We'll have to work fast or stall him with any moves that lower his attack, buff our defense, or simply evade the attack. Austin, his attacks are so massive that your Thief's Reflex won't work on him, so you'll have to dodge the old-fashioned way. The thing is, even taking him down to 0 HP won't defeat him! We'll have to find a way to take him down permanently, but what could that be?" Goombario Tattled.

"He attacks with two different attacks. Young Masters. He'll either pound a party and his partner with his hands or do a single-target jump attack that does more damage but only targets a party leader. As we're not as hearty as Master Mario, Master Dylan, or Master Austin, we must exercise caution so we don't miss a turn and, by extension, allow Tubba Blubba to gain more power. If this escalates out of control, please remember that I can get rid of his current charge levels with Spring Cleaning, but I must warn you. Repeated usage may allow our opponent to build immunity towards it," Bootler followed up.

"Hey, Dyl! How much does Spring Cleaning cost again?!" Austin called over as Mario jumped on Tubba twice, dealing 4 and bringing him down to 36. Tubba Blubba came after him and slammed his massive arms on Mario and Goombario, who were able to block it. Mario ended up taking a reduced 5 damage, putting his HP 20. As he said, Tubba Blubba roared afterward, raising his attack by 1.

"Only 3 FP, so we have many times to use it should we keep up with our FP levels!" Dylan shouted back as he went next, loading up Jordan's form to mitigate some of the damage. Since Jordan had a HP Plus Badge on, Dylan's HP jumped to 35 as a result. He then spent 5 FP to raise the party's defense by 2 for 3 turns. Bootler socked Tubba in the face for 4 damage, lowering his HP to 32 and raising Dylan's defense to a whopping 5 for this turn. When Tubba tried to sit on him, he only took 5 damage when he guarded, putting his HP at 30. Tubba Blubba also charged yet again, putting him at 2. Austin went next as Venom came out and marked him as a priority target, allowing Austin's Triple Strike to deal 12 damage, putting Tubba's HP to 20.

"Ow! You'll pay for that, runts!" Tubba yelled, coming after Austin with another jump attack. Austin yelped and scattered from the impact zone. Despite missing, Tubba still charged up again, meaning he was now at 3 attack.

"Guys, his attack power is starting to reach dangerous levels! We should consider using Bootler's ability, but keep in mind what he said! Too many times in a row may have Tubba build up an immunity to the effect!" Goombario shouted. Everyone nodded before Mario went next, trying his luck with a Shrink Smash, dealing 4 damage but not getting the shrink. Mario eyed the badge with frustration as Goombario swapped spots with Bombette. Since Mario had the Quick Change Badge equipped, she was free to follow up with a Bomb attack, dealing 6 damage and lowering both Mario's FP to 9 and Tubba's HP to 10 HP. She also didn't get the Shrink proc, so Tubba was free to slam his hands on the both of them. Mario blotched his block while Bombette was fuming from the lack of shrink, so they both suffered 7 damage due to Dylan's Defensive Shout. Bombette was out of commission for 2 turns while Mario rubbed his head in pain, now being at 11 HP. He also went up to 4 attack. Austin went next, attacking with one more Triple Strike, sending Tubba down to the ground with stars over his head, but weirdly enough, the battle didn't end there, and his attack still went up by 1, meaning it was at 6. Their defense buff ran out as well.

"Huh? He's down but we're still in battle? What's going on?" Kooper asked. Mario shrugged. Since Tubba was down, the party could freely choose a Party Leader for the next attack. No one had a clue, so Mario just jumped on Tubba twice and dealt no damage. Bombette was still licking her wounds, so she couldn't attack. Tubba's turn came next, but again, nothing happened except for his attack going up once more. Austin and Venom tried their luck but got the same effect and attack rise from Tubba, meaning it was 8 now. This time, Tubba shook his head and stood up, fully healed of the previous damage.

"Hah! Back in action!" Tubba yelled, attacking Austin with a butt drop. He wasn't expecting it at all, so he didn't even try to dodge it, taking 18 damage and leaving him embedded in the ground with 2 HP left, leaving him in Danger.

"What?! He fully healed!? That wasn't in my notes!" Goombario exclaimed.

"Hah, nice try, pipsqueaks! But as long as my heart beats, you can't take me out!" Tubba Blubba taunted. Kooper and Goombario thought about it briefly before a lightbulb popped over their heads.

"His heart... that's it! Guys, we can't defeat his main body while his heart is still operational!" Goombario exclaimed.

"Yeah. Remember when he was blabbing to us about the secret? He just pilots the body, and we didn't get a finishing blow on him. He just dipped. We gotta finish off his heart... which is morbid now that I say it out loud," Kooper explained. Mario nodded before asking the award-winning question of how they would even get inside his body. The group sweatdropped in response.

"I... haven't thought that far ahead..." Kooper sheepishly said.

"We could call Kimani and Jordan. They weren't chewed or anything, so I believe they'd be ok and able to attack inside. Since they're there, they should have no problem attacking the heart while we stall for time out here," Goombario said. Mario nodded before asking Dylan to go next to reset his attack power. Dylan nodded before he had Bootler clean his charge away before swapping to Kimani's form and delivering a devastating Dragon's Dance and Fury combo, dealing a whopping 20 damage and cutting Tubba's HP in half. The attack left Dylan winded, so he could not block the slam from Tubba, taking 6 damage and dropping his HP to 19. Bootler was able to guard Bow, however, so the two of them were okay. Austin was feeling cheeky, so he had Venom mark him again before he spun for a second before he posed. Mimicking his pose while back-to-back with him was a clone of Austin. Once he did that, Austin and the clone sliced and diced for a grand total of 24 damage, putting Tubba down again for the count. Austin did drain a healthy chunk of his FP; however, being left at 4 FP when all was said and done.

"Phew... Forgot Mirror Image doubles my FP usage..." Austin panted. His clone handed him a towel, prompting him to thank... himself as he wiped some sweat off his face.

"Little Buddy! Stay Puff! I don't know if you can hear us, but we need you guys to finish off the heart! Quickly! We're running out of FP and time out here!" Dylan yelled out. The group shared looks but hoped Tubba's stomach wasn't soundproof. Dylan didn't notice, but his goggles glowed briefly before it faded/. He didn't see it, however.

Tubba Blubba's Stomach

"Ugh... my head..."

"Mmm... you ok, Kimani?"

"I've had better days..."

"Little Buddy! Stay Puff! I don't know if you can hear us, but we need you guys to finish off the heart! Quickly! We're running out of FP and time out here!"

"...Wait, that was Dylan's voice. They're fighting Tubba Blubba!? Firebrand, come out here and give me some light!"

With the command barked, a flash of light appeared before the area was suddenly illuminated. Standing there was Firebrand. Next to him was Kimani with Jordan getting to his feet second after. Floating all around them were various Dust Devils.

"Oh, guys! You're finally up! We thought Tubba squeezed the life out of you guys and I was worried we didn't veil you from being chewed good enough. But we're not that good at veiling other people, so..." Gust told him. Kimani and Jordan looked at their HP, seeing it at 5 each.

"Jesus! Did he hurt us that badly!?" Jordan asked, wincing when he moved a bit too much, and his ribs protested from the motion. Kimani went to stand up, but one of his legs felt weak, and he fell over as a result.

"Damn it... I think my leg got busted up from the earlier grab, chewing, and falling. Gust, did you guys see a heart anywhere in here?" Kimani asked as Typhoon appeared and gave him a hand.

"Uh, before you guys woke up, we couldn't see anything. But now that we got light, it's all the way up there," He said, pointing up. The group craned their necks to see Tubba's Heart high in the air, connected via veins and whatnot. Needless to say, it was out of reach for them, even if Kimani used moves such as Dragon Uppercut. Jordan squinted his eyes, causing his Peekaboo Badge to flash. Jordan could see that the heart only had 1 HP to his name. Dylan's previous message rang through his head.

"Right, we gotta get up there and take it out. Ty, use your water tentacles and carry me and Kimani up there,"

"Can Ty even lift you two at the same time? Kimani's easy, but you're not exactly light," Firebrand asked as Typhoon scooped up Kimani in one of his arms while he grabbed Jordan by the back of his jacket. He then effortlessly picked him up while causing 4 tentacles to appear on his back.

"Wanna doubt me again?" Typhoon asked, causing the dragon to sweatdrop as he leaped onto Typhoon's shoulder as he started using the water tentacles to scale towards the heart. The Heart looked down and saw the group coming after him.

"Huh?! I thought I disposed of you guys! Get them, my antibodies!" Tubba's Heart yelled, causing a giant swarm of Antibodies to come after them.

"DODGE, TY! DODGE!" Kimani yelled, poking him in the side rapidly.

"I'M NOT AUSTIN!" Typhoon yelled back. Jordan was just about to make a shield when a storm of Dust Devils appeared in front of them.

"LET'S GO, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS! KEEP OUR HEROES SAFE!" Gust yelled out as the Dust Devils started to collide with the Antibodies.

"Jeez, it's a whole world war in here! Step on it, Ty!" Kimani shouted again.

"Do you wanna drive!?" Typhoon exclaimed, trying to swerve away from the flying ghosts and antibodies. A few got past the Dust Devils, but Firebrand was able to snipe them with some well-placed fireballs. As a result, Kimani's FP started to run out. One got past all their defenses and whacked Typhoon in the head, halting his concentration and causing him to lose his form. Before the group started falling, Jordan quickly activated Berserk and grabbed Kimani before hurling him at the heart.

"GO LONG, GUST!" Jordan called out as Firebrand transferred from Typhoon's dematerializing form to Kimani's back. Gust heard the call and looked up to see Kimani, who was slowly starting to fall again. Gust swooped by and grabbed Kimani from under his arms before they continued to fly towards the heart.

"Did someone call for a one-way trip to the heart!?" Gust exclaimed.

"No! Stay back! Antibodies!" Tubba's Heart yelled, sending a concentrated hoard at them.

"GUUUUUUSSSSST!" Both Kimani and Firebrand yelled. Gust grunted before he made them transparent, causing them to fly through the hoard. Once they reached the heart, Gust unveiled and swung Kimani haphazardly before he used him as an impromptu weapon.

"This is revenge from us, DUST DEVILS!" Gust exclaimed, whacking Tubba's heart with Kimani, dealing 1 damage to both members. Tubba's Heart started yelling as the Antibodies stopped fighting the other Dust Devils. Gust flew back down to Jordan, who was wheezing from the rough landing and his 1 HP.

"How'd things go?" He gasped out.

"I got used as a sword..." Kimani muttered. Jordan snickered, causing Kimani to fume before the area started shaking.

"What's going on?" Gust asked. The other three shrugged before they started floating from the crazy air pressure. They were then shot straight up.

Gusty Gulch

Outside, the group had to fight Tubba Blubba's body 2 more times. By now, Mario was in Peril while Austin and Dylan were down for the count. Mario gripped his hammer and was getting ready to go down, at least fighting, when Tubba Blubba gained a pained look and grabbed his stomach.

"OW!" He yelled. Mario gave him a quizzical look. He started crying afterward.

"Oh... Oh... Nooo! With my heart and body united, I'm not invincible anymore… and these jerks inside of me keep giving me heartburn..." He whined. When Mario raised his hammer again, Tubba Blubba screamed in fear.

"Those 'jerks' are my loyal subjects and my friends, so unless you want to get assaulted again," Bow threatened.

"I give up! Look, I'll even give back all the ghosts I ate! Forgive me!" Tubba yelled before he opened his mouth and exhaled strongly, causing a plethora of Dust Devils to fly out. Towards the tail end, Kimani and Jordan flew out and landed on the group, coughing up a storm.

"God... fresh air, finally!" Kimani cried out. Jordan just wheezed again.

"I'm actually a really sensitive guy trapped in a huge body. I don't wanna be invincible anymore if it means I have to fight guys like you! But... I don't want to fight Bowser either..."

"Well... why don't you just stay in town with us then? We don't like Bowser either, and it sounds like he didn't give you much choice in the matter," Gust asked. Tubba's eyes teared up again.

"...Really? After everything I did?... You guys are the best! I swear I won't let anyone harm you guys ever again!" Tubba exclaimed. Gust smiled as Mario walked over to Kimani and Jordan, helping them up.

"Thanks, Mar... Sorry for getting caught and everything. Lost my temper and tried to save Gust," Kimani explained. Mario shook his head, forgiving him before he pointed to Dylan, who was slowly coming to his senses. Mario mentioned that Dylan went on a murderous streak trying to get him back. Kimani snorted before he limped over with Jordan. Once Dylan saw Kimani and Jordan crouching near him, he sprung up and flew into them, bawling his eyes out. While that happened, Bow floated over and let out a satisfied cackle.

"Serves you right! And everyone who got eaten has returned safely! Hooray! …but I guess I'd better tell everyone not to scare old Tubba Blubba anymore. We used to love scaring Tubba Blubba night and day because he was such a coward. Oh well. We're not sorry for it! Scaring folks is what ghosts do, so Boo on him... Ha!"

"Bow... Seriously?" Parakarry deadpanned. She sweatdropped.

"Ahem... yes, well... I suppose I could offer a formal apology to him. Besides, he was never a bad guy, just a bit of a scaredy-cat. It's sweet he's offering to be the guardian of Gusty Gulch... Hmm... My fellow Boos!" She muttered before yelling aloud, causing everyone to look at her. Once she had everyone's attention, she floated towards Tubba Blubba, who winced in response. But his reaction turned into one of surprise when Bow... bowed to him.

"Sir Tubba Blubba. On behalf of all of us Boos, I'd like to apologize for scarring you all those times ago. As Boos, we tend to get a bit laser-focused on scaring and don't take our victim's feelings into account sometimes. I also heard your conversation with Gust and would like to formally appoint you as the Guardian of Gusty Gulch... that is if you'd like," Bow explained. When she got no response, she glanced up and saw Tubba tearing up yet again, causing her to sweatdrop.

"Apology accepted, and I'd love to be the guardian!" He exclaimed. The Dust Devils cheered as Tubba started walking back to town to celebrate with the Dust Devils. Bow turned to Mario afterward.

"Ah... you know? That felt nice... and this was a pretty invigorating experience. I've never felt so full of excitement before!3"

"You are practically glowing, My Lady. Perhaps we should accompany Master Mario for a bit longer," Bootler offered.

"A novel idea, Bootler. Of course, only if it's OK with you, Mario," Bow asked. Mario chuckled before he said yes. Bow offered another laugh in return.

"Done. You're so lucky to be able to travel with me. Gweaah heh ha!- Oh! Right, before we forget. A deal's a deal, so I'll giving you back the Start Spirit, as I promised," She said, clapping her hands twice. After a second, 2 Boos flew over, carrying the card that held the Star Spirit. Mario thanked her before he tapped the card, causing it to slowly spin around him before it ended above him. He let out a satisfied "Yeah!" The partners around him cheered as well while Dylan had Kimani, Austin, and Jordan in a bear hug, still crying his eyes out with the others sweatdropping.

"After solving the secret of "Invincible" Tubba Blubba, Mario and the party set free Star Spirit Skolar. Now, with Tubba Blubba reformed as the Guardian of Gusty Gulch, the Boos are free to haunt to their hearts' content. Even the lonely wind echoing through Gusty Gulch seems to be celebrating the victory... at least for now. With the newest party members, Bow and Bootler, in tow, Mario and their friends are ready to take on their next challenge.
