And we're back with a battle-centric chapter, people. Just to get myself into the mood, I listened to Jiyuu no Tsubasa, which is one of my all-time favourite AoT openings.

Chapter 43: Hosu in Flames

"Hey, this time, I'll be watching you beat up other people." She looked his way, wondering if he was serious, but when she saw his smile, she couldn't help but snort before matching it.

"Just try and keep up, you wooden cat." She replied as they turned a corner and saw a massive melee between several heroes and 3 more Nomu monsters, including a tall, skinny, blackened, skinned version that just sent someone flying into a car.

Crust uttered a war cry as he charged in, and the two students followed his example. Midoriya went for the yellow-skinned one, and Kendo went to aid some heroes trying to subdue another grey-skinned Nomu.

Coming in low to the ground, Midoriya let out an eager purr as he swung his hammer into the side of head of the Nomu, the creature screeching as he was thrown back, but that was all as it didn't seem to have any damage as it turned its attention to him and lunged at him, nodding out of the way, he swung his hammer again and struck it in the leg, expecting to hear something give, or break but again there was nothing.

"That isn't right. You're a tough nut to crack, aren't you?" Midoriya stated as he shifted to avoid the creature's counterattack before it was blasted back by one of the heroes controlling water from a wrecked fire hydrant. Jumping back, he landed next to the heroes already on site, a few looking like they had gone a few rounds with…whatever these Nomu were.

"What the? Who are you?" One of them asked, no doubt not recognizing him as a local hero or one of those called to the scene.

"Challenger, I'm one of Crust's interns," Midoriya replied, keeping it short.

A heroine who was listening to him was angry that he was there. "Interns, you're just a student. Get away from here!"

"We were granted permission to help, so let's focus on the problem, and then we can talk about us being here." They didn't have time to fight about what they could and couldn't do. Right now they needed to handle this situation before more people were hurt.

A point emphasized when one of the larger beasts, a black skinned Nomu, knocked aside a hero and threw a car at them, the downed hero only saved when Crust got in the way and blocked the vehicle, his shields strong even when the vehicle exploded on impact.

As they were buffeted by the hot winds caused by the blast, one of the heroes, a shirtless man with bull horns, decided that help was help. "If you're going to help, you can't just a hammer. Whatever quirk that thing is makes it immune to blunt impacts. I learned that the hard way." He messaged his arm from when he had been thrown through a wall earlier.

"Then, if a hammer won't work, cover me," Midoriya dashed toward the Nomu, shield held out front. At the same time, he shifted his hammer into something more suitable.

"What, are you insane, kid?" Midoriya, in turn, laughed at the question.

"Maybe!" he replied, as the heroes still did as he asked, distracting the creature and giving him an opening to strike. Jumping into the air, the Nomu looked up just in time for Midoriya to thrust a spear into its shoulder. The wooded spear dug deep into its flesh, spilling crimson.

His hand holding his extended spear still impaled into the beast, Midoriya smiled. "First blood's mine, monster." Retracting it, he flipped in the aid, moving so that he was not behind the beast and still in the air and sent out another thrust, but the Nomu wised up and avoided it, grabbing the shaft and pulling him close.

Midoriya didn't let that happen as he caused the middle of the shaft to explode, severing it and allowing him to drop graciously, landing like a cat. The Nomu, angry that he had escaped him, tried to attack him, but the same water Hero hit him with a full strength blast on his back. That was followed by another smacking him with a road sign, which didn't do much damage but did knock the beast off its feet.

Recalling what he had seen Crust do earlier, Midoriya yelled at the heroes. "Don't hold back. That thing isn't human and won't stay down unless you make it!"

The bull-horned hero, who had smacked the Nomu down, nodded as he reversed the road sign so that the jagged, twisted shaft faced the beast. "Good to know." He thrust down into the Nomu, piercing its leg through muscle and bone before the end crashed into the road below, the Nomu screaming in pain as it lashed out but found itself pinned.

The man took a breath and took his eyes off the defeated foe to take in the rest of the fight. Manuel had to focus on the fires that were raging out of control, only to hear Challenger yelling, "Behind you!" He turned his head, seeing the kid rushing towards him, like the others, before he heard something crack and give way.

Looking down, he saw that it was the Nomu, which ignored all logic or self-preservation instincts and tore its own leg to shreds to get up and attack him; its jaws opened wide to take a bite out of him as he braced for it.

"Jumbo fist!" they heard Kendo yell as she punched the Nomu she was fighting with an enlarged fist, one that had the power of One for All behind it. This sent the mindless creature flying, crashing into the Nomu right before it could bite the hero. The force carried both into the side of the bus with a thud as the vehicle tipped onto its one side before coming back down.

Looking, they saw Kendo, still cloaked in lightning, as she with a smile. "Just in time."

"No shit, you saved my ass…?" The hero didn't know what to call her, but her smile reminded him of All Might.

"Battle Fist." Kendo walked up and gave him a nod. She would have shaken his hands, but they had other things to worry about right now.

"Oh yeah, I recognize you." Another of the heroes, The Fly, if Midoriya had heard them earlier, right started. Kendo assumed he was talking about the festival. "You were in that fashion shoot yesterday, weren't you?" She was wrong as Midoriya turned his head to hide his snickering from her, though Kendo heard all the same as she blushed and glared at him.

The moment passed as they heard metal screeching as it was bent and snapped, along with labored, beastly breathing as the two Nomus, one dragging a nearly severed foot, pulled themselves from the bus and bellowed at them like animals.

They all turned to the two, ready for the fight to continue. "Just what would it take to put these guys down?" Midoriya asked, as the one they had been fighting looked like it should be down; those wounds were crippling, and yet it still wanted to fight?

"Just keep hurting them. They aren't like the one from the USJ, that one could regenerate, but look at them." Kendo told them, recalling how she saw Nomu regenerate half its body in seconds after Todoroki tried to capture it with ice.

If anything, the Nomu that Crust was fighting seemed comparable. The man had injured it several times by himself, yet it regenerated and came back on him, wilder than the last time.

Midoriya realized the same when he glanced toward his mentor, and while he looked like he was handling things, he wanted to help him, which meant first handling these two lesser beasts. "What, do we have to pin them to the ground like Crust did?"

"Unless you have a way to break every bone in their body, that's our only play," Kendo replied as the Nomu got tired of waiting and attacked them, the group splitting to let them through. Midoriya swung his spear's shaft towards it, sending Tenet through it to repair and alter it into an extended axe. The Nomu saw it coming and jumped to avoid it, but its damaged leg meant that it didn't clear the thing entirely, with Midoriya's strike taking its mess of a foot off.

The Nomu landed, but thinking it still had its other leg, it was off balance immediately and toppled over, which the heroes quickly responded to. The bull-horned one jumped onto it and started to wrestle with it before getting its arms behind its back. "Someone get something to restrain it!" he yelled as he strained to keep the struggling beast in check, and Midoriya clapped his hands together to make something for that.

With Kendo, she and the others handled the second, Kendo knowing she couldn't grab the thing as it already displayed quirks that turned it into a porcupine and the ability to store and release impact from attacks. Still, unlike the USJ Nomu that Shigaraki bragged about, it didn't have the regeneration to heal from the damage those attacks did.

Grabbing a tree, she made a silent apology before she ripped it clean out the ground, roots and all, and holding it like a hammer, she brought the thing down into the Nomu's head before repeating that a couple more times till the tree was pulverized, leaving a dazed, cut up looking creature which Manuel was quick to react to, hitting it with another blast of water which sent it sliding across the road. Two heroes started to pelt the beast with throwing stars, most hitting the mark but not slowing it down even as it gained more cuts, more wounds and bled more blood.

"Dammit, we need something bigger!" One of the two ninja-themed heroes is called but.

"We don't normally fight monsters, so unless you have a grenade on you, we will need to work with what we have!" His partner yelled back, as most villains knew when to quit. Yet, this thing took almost all their throwing stars like a champ, just flexing its many muscles to dislodge them, leaving its body covered in cuts and red all over.

Kendo was thinking that maybe she needed to land another surprise attack and hope that this one did it in, but as the Nomu raised its hands to attack, a spinning shield came flying towards them, severing both of its arms as the creature screamed in shock and pain. "What the-!" Kendo and the other two looked to see that Crust had been the one, pulling away long enough from his fight to send a shield like a buzz saw blade before turning around and creating a new shield to block a punch from his foe, which had his skid back but remain on his feet.

Taking a breath, the top hero remained sturdy and defiant of the opponent he fought. "Stay strong! They might be formidable, but we are hot-blooded heroes and heroines! We won't falter or break when faced against the products of evil, but triumph!" He rallied them as he charged his force, evading its attack and slamming his shield into its side, forcing it off balance.

That call gave the rest a second wind, and with an armless, weakened foe, they knew that they had to win this. As Kendo charged in, the Nomu charged to meet her, but she jumped out of the way, tripping it and allowing the other two heroes to kick it in the face. The two worked in such perfect unison that they had to have been partners. With the beast on its back, it struggled to get back up without its arms, trying to use its legs.

Kendo wouldn't let that happen. She ripped some of the pavement guard rails, and using her enlarged arms and strength, placed one atop the Nomu and punched the ends into the road, trapping it.

"Finally, that's one down." Kendo sighed, happy that was done.

"Make that two." She and the other two turned to see Midoriya and the rest with the restrained Nomu, Midoriya having created a pillory and restraints for its legs. "Should we-!"

"Before you go, I need to ask something. Did either of you see another student?" A hero interrupted them, one of those fighting with them.

"Student?" Kendo asked; she didn't recall any classmates being in Hosu, nor did Midoriya. Were they from a different school?

The hero in green and purple nodded, worried. "Iida. We came together, but we got separated from the fighting started."

"Iida doesn't seem like the type…" Midoriya started before the pieces began to fall into place.

"Oh no." Kendo realized it as well before she turned and bolted, powering up One for All up to 10% to get that extra speed. "I gotta go! Midoriya, tell Crust what's happening!" She yelled at him before she jumped up a fire escape and vanished over the rooftops.

"Wait, where is she going?" one of the heroes asked before there was an explosion. Looking up, they saw that the top of a building was in flames, and a grey-skinned Nomu looked at them with those soleless eyes before it screeched louder than the others.

"Another one? Just how many did the League bring?" Midoriya asked, wincing as his ears felt like they would bleed from that screech as the Nomu dived towards them.

"Yes, Yes! Make it flashy, make it loud! Find and fight every hero you can, you mindless summons!" Tomura laughed as he watched from a taller building as his Nomu ramped across the city. Already, fires were breaking out, and even from this distance, he could hear the people screaming and fleeing in panic.

"Will you be joining in on the fun, master Shigaraki?" Kurogiri, the dark mist-covered member of the League, asked.

"Don't be stupid. I'm still recovering my HP after that asshole Stain decided to use me as a blade holster. Speaking of which, have any of them found him?" Shigaraki lazily glared at his second in command. While the doctor had stitched him back up, his shirt was still torn and bloody from his failed attempt to recruit Stain.

'He's just like the rest, praising the dirt All Might walks on, I would have killed him even if he joined to shut him up.' Shigaraki's red eyes narrowed in anger as he recalled how Stain, a villain like them, spent half the time talking about how much of a 'hero' and 'proper' hero All Might and All Might alone was.

"Not yet, though they're focused on following the first order you gave, to rampage and destroy whatever they can get their hands on," Kurogiri replied, as an explosion went off in the distance, along with the distance but continuous sounds of people screaming as they fled from the beasts.

"Yeah, yeah, makes sense. They're not the type of summons you send for fetch quests. But they're great when you want to clear a stage of the annoying mobs." Shigaraki turned back to the show, eager to see how the world reacted.

"That little brat, it seems he enjoys making noise." Stain said to himself as he looked at the blooming clouds of smoke coming from what he knew was Tomura's work.

"Still, it makes my job easier as all eyes would be on those beasts of theirs, but come morning, they'll know another fake was struck down," He concluded as he turned his attention to the pro hero. A man he was holding to the wall by their face, his other hand holding his chipped but still dangerous sword. The pro in question was Native, and much like Stain's other victims, he found that he couldn't move a single muscle.

"Bastard! What the hell…did you do…? Die!" Native struggled as he tried to move even a finger. But as much as he willed himself to move, he found that besides speaking, he was trapped in his own body. "Die!" In response to his curse, Stain merely scoffed at him.

"As someone who calls themselves a hero, you should have picked your last words more carefully," Stain told him just as he picked up a presence coming towards and fast, but not fast enough to catch him off guard.

'Great, another distraction, ' he thought to himself as he turned around in time to catch the sight of a white armoured figure trying to kick him in the head. With little effort, he easily avoided the charge and kick, and with the reversed side of his blade, he knocked his would-be attacker away, the blow knocking off their helmet.

"What is this? A child wearing a suit?" Stain asked as he saw that the person on the ground didn't look all that old, maybe in their early 20s at best but more likely to be in their teens. "Get lost boy. This isn't a place to play dress-up." He told the boy as he prepared to continue with his murder, but the boy didn't seem to care.

"Multiple blades of varying sizes, a scarf as crimson as the blood you spill, there's no doubt about it," Iida said aloud as he accounted all that was known about the appearance of the Hero Killer as he worked himself onto his knees. "You must be the Hero Killer: Stain!"

'He knows who I am, and yet still stands there, and with such eyes.' Stain observed him as he could spot that look of hatred from a mile away, which was incredibly potent with this brat.

"I thought that I wouldn't have my chance to find you, but my fortunes changed for the better," Iida said as his eyes grew even colder, as he had been relieved and eager when he was told they were going to Hosu, more so when the attack gave him the perfect chance to separate from Slidin' Go. He would apologize later, but only after he had done what he had wanted to do since he started his internship.

He would have gotten up and continued if not for the fact Stain moved his blade to within an inch of Iida's face.

"You're here for vengeance, aren't you? You better pick your next words carefully because, depending on what they are, you may discover that even children aren't exempt from my judgment." Stain told him. If he proved himself a fake like Native, then he would die like Native.

"So what you're saying? I'm not even a target, a threat to you?" Iida said to himself in both anger and slight disbelief as he locked eyes with Stain again, showing that he wasn't scared of him. "Then listen here, criminal!" He started as he started to get back up to his feet, the blade never too far from his face.

"I am the younger brother to a hero you attacked, the blood of a man who was and will always be a wonderful older brother!" he said as he thought back to his brother and all the times he had watched his work. I came here to stop you in his place, to get justice for what you did to him! Remember this name for as long as you draw breath." He continued on with growing ferocity in his tone.

"Ingenium! That is the name of the hero that will defeat you!" Iida proclaimed as he got back up, standing tall even against the Hero Killer. He made a vow to himself, and no matter what, he would keep it-no, no matter the cost.

"I see." Stain stated as he dropped Native to the ground and turned to face Iida fully.

"Then die." He finished as Iida attacked him.

In another part of Hosu, the fighting continued to spread as Nomu acted like ravenous animals, attacking anything that moved. "Shit, it's going after the civilians!" One minor hero called out as they struggled to fight against a Nomu. This one may have been smaller than the rest, but it proved to be a challenge for them.

All around, the night was lit up not by the lights of the town but by the flames that continued to spread. Their efforts to suppress and extinguish them were hampered by the fact that they were actively fighting Nomu. ThisThe situation was was made all the worse by the smoke, which made it hard to breathebreathe while also obscuring their vision, leaving openings for the Nomu to exploit, as the one that just got past them did.

This one, in particular, went after a couple who had the bad luck of taking the wrong path in their bid to escape the fighting and ended up right back in the thick of it.

"It's too fast!" Another screamed as the two civilians screamed in panic and fear as the Nomu charged them, ready to do how knows what with them.

"Play time's over, punk!" a familiar deep voice said out of the blue, before any of them could react. A streak of red hot fire shot out and engulfed the Nomu, the creature screaming and writhing in pain.

"What!" One of the civvies asked aloud as they all turned to the direction the flames came from to see a familiar flame hero and son walking up to the scene.

"I was looking for this Stain character but haven't had much luck. When I see a criminal, I put them down all the same." Endeavor said as he walked right up to the still-burning Nomu, standing before the civilian couple.

"What the hell are you three doing? You mean to tell me this one villain was too much for you?" He turned as he asked the two present, disappointed that they had the gall to call themselves pros when this one…thing could evade capture under their watch.

"You got to be kidding me…" One of the civvies asked, finally regaining his voice.

"Why are you in Hosu?" The other asked, holding on to her date as he looked towards the back of the number 2 hero.

"Isn't that obvious?" Endeavour asked, but with a small smirk, as he looked at the first opponent of the night, and how things were going, he suspected it wouldn't be the last.

"It's because I'm a hero." He finished as the Nomu finally rid itself of the flames burning it, not glaring at him. Oddly, he was told that these Nomu creatures were mindless puppets. What business did they have feeling emotion?

"Let's deal with you, shall we?" Endeavour proposed as Shoto took that as his call to stand and let his old man handle this.

"Careful, it can-!" One of the pros tried to warn him, but before he could finish, the Nomu released a wave of fire back towards him. Though surprised, experience came to his aide, and he batted his redirected flames aside to keep the people behind him safe from harm. Once the wave died off, he observed the creature and saw that it had even more burns on itself than before firing off that attack, giving him an idea of its quirk.

"So you can absorb attacks and send them back when you please? Fat-gum is similar, though you don't seem immune to the damage you take or have a regenerative factor. A useless quirk." Endeavour thought aloud as he charged the creature.

"That's not it! It's like that thing has multiple quirks!" Another told him as the creature suddenly bulked up with what looked to be armor made from some kind of stone, though it wouldn't do the damn thing any good.

'Stone like armor? That's something unexpected, but-' Endeavor thought to himself as he dodged a sloppy swipe before punching the creature in the face, dazing it before he grabbed onto its head. 'Nothing I haven't dealt with in the past!' He finished the thought as, with the hand still holding into the creature's face, he fired off a stream of fire, ever-increasing in heat till it resembled a stream of red plasma. The Nomu, for its efforts, tried to struggle out of the burning hold, but within seconds, its struggles ceased as its arms fell lifelessly to its side.

After another couple of seconds, Endeavor canceled the stream of fire and dropped the now headless Nomu to the ground.

"My flames hot enough to smelt steel in seconds with ease. That armor of yours was useless against it, monster." He explained, the headless stump of the nomu still glowing red from the heat; the smell of burnt pork was thick in the air. "I was the worst opponent you could ask for." He finished as he looked down at his fallen foe, not feeling a hint of remorse.

"A-amazing, he took that thing down in seconds." One of the pros said in awe.

"Is this the gap between us and the number 2?" Another masked one asked as he just saw the man take out the creature they had been struggling with for a full 5 minutes in about 30 seconds.

"[Tick] Shoto, are the people safe?" Endeavor didn't pay them any mind as he turned to his son walking up to him.

"Yeah, they made it out just fine," Shoto replied, taking a small step back to lead the people away from the fighting. "You think the hero killer is responsible for this?"

"No. It seems more like the world of that Shigaraki villain that attacked your class. The entire attack reeks of a childish outburst." Endeavor stated as he had studied the attack patterns of his prey, and this whole thing was far too noisy for him.

"My thoughts exactly," Shoto replied. While dealing with his issues since the festival, he couldn't say that the attack didn't remind him of the League, even if one excluded the Nomu that were running around.

'Which means they may be another beast like that black one from the USJ somewhere in Hosu.' He thought to himself as he looked down at the unmoving corpse of the Nomu. He wasn't a fool; he knew this couldn't have been the worst. His moment of thought was interrupted when they heard another explosion coming from near the center of town.

"Hmm, looks like most of the trouble is near the city center. Let's go!" Endeavor ordered as he took off running, Shoto not that far behind him. After a couple of seconds, the two other pros followed suit.

"Right," Shoto replied as he ran after his father. Wondering when all this chaos will be brought to an end.

"Face justice!" Iida yelled as he tried to land even a single hit on Stain, but the hero killer dodged around his attack as if he was moving in slow motion.

"You're still a novice. This isn't even a fight." Stain stated as he jumped over a low kick before landing a heavy palm strike to Iida's chest, forcing him back.

"Shut up!" Iida yelled back in rage as he launched himself right back it, mixing in punches along with his engine-boosted kicks if only to throw the kill off. Still, it was as if Stain knew what he would try before he did. 'Dammit, how is he doing it? Is that he this quirk?'

"You said that you're Ingenium's brother, right?" Stain asked as he closed the distance and punched him right in the face, breaking his glasses and his nose in a single hit. Sending Iida reeling from the pain. Just as he blinked away the tears, he saw that Stain was right in front of him, seemingly in mid-air.

'How did he…?' Iida tried to ask himself, but before he could even react, Stain, who had jumped to him and slammed his spiked boot right into Iida's shoulder, causing the boy to cough out a wheeze of pain as the force of the blow sent him back first into the ground. The hero killer landed right on his back with a heavy thud, the weight of the body cracking a rib or two.

"Don't think you can match me. The real Ingenium survived because I wished it. To spread my word hoping that the fakes and liars would heed them and back down from the hero profession before they sully its name any further." Stain revealed before he pointed his sword right at Iida's face so that he could see the cold steel that would take his life.

"But the fact you still stand here, trying to fight me, tells me that didn't work." He finished as he raised the blade high, with Iida being powerless to stop him as he looked on with both rage and fear in his eyes.

"You're just another weakling." Stain finished as he brought down the blade, the chipped steel piercing through his armor and carving into his flesh with as much ease as a rock fell through water. Iida grunted as the blade cut into his shoulder, near striking bone as the killer pulled it from with little care.

"You and your fake brother are both weak. Because you are not real heroes." Stain stated as he plunged his blade down again, close to the first and, this time, hitting bone. Iida couldn't keep in the scream from the pain but powered through it through rage.

"Shut up, villain!" Iida growled out through clenched teeth. "My brother is paralyzed from the waist down due to spinal cord damage; he'll never walk again. He was an excellent hero who saved without a thought, whose lead heroes like it was easy, inspired me to want to be a hero." He said with tears in his eyes as he remembered the first time he had ever seen his brother in action and how proud he was of him.

"Because of you, he'll never be able to do that again! He was…he was the best hero and brother I could have asked for, and you crushed him for no good reason! What, because you wanted to spread your word? Don't make me laugh!" Iida's fury mixed with grief as he remembered his brother's state the last time he had seen him.

"I won't, I'll never forgive you…I kill you!" He vowed to him as he tried to move, the adrenaline in his veins numbing the pain, but Stain stomped on his back, keeping him pinned on his belly.

"Worry about saving that guy first." Stain pointed his blade towards the downed pro in the corner, his words catching Iida off guard as he turned his gaze to the man slumped against the wall.

'Wait, there was someone else here?' Iida thought to himself.

"Isn't that the job of a hero? To save people in need? To use your power and skill not for thyself but for the greater good and your fellow man?" Stain asked him, unimpressed with the boy's rage-filled rampage as he pulled his blade free from Iida's shoulder, blood dripping down its length onto the floor right before Iida's eyes.

"From the moment I saw such hate in your eyes, I knew you're a fake." Stan mocked him, this time though Iida didn't offer up any rebuke, too lost in his failure to reply. "You didn't even notice him, did you? Too clouded was your vision; all you wanted to do was seek petty revenge rather than save him." Stain belittled him with a scoff as Iida lowered his head.

"Disgusting, that's the furthest thing from a hero. Period."

"And that's why," Stain finished as he licked the blood off the blade. "You're going to die tonight."

"Wha—" Within an instant, Iida felt himself become paralyzed. His entire body, sans his mouth and eyes, locked up at once, and no matter what he did or how much he willed it, he couldn't even twitch his fingers or wiggle his toes.

'What is this….sensation? I can't move at all….I'm stuck!' Iida thought to himself as a cold sweat formed on his face, the weight of the situation barrelling down on him as he strained his eyes to look at his aggressor. 'Just what the hell did he do to me?'

"I hope you have made peace with your God, for you are about to be purged from this earth to make way for a fair and just world. One where those called heroes are worthy of the title." Stain preached as he raised his blade again, this time aiming for Iida's neck. He could take his entire head off, but perhaps he'll go for a simple stab and let him bleed out. A wound to the neck could see him die in less than 10 seconds.

"Shut up …!" Iida raged as he tried to move, get up, do….do anything.

"No matter what you say, you're still the criminal who hurt my big brother!" Iida yelled out as Stain was about to bring down the blade, but at the last moment, his instincts screamed at him to move, and he turned in the direction of something cloaked in lightning.

"Get away from him!" Kendo came rushing like a human lightning bolt; her enlarged fist punched the hero killer, who blocked with his arm but still felt the bones in his arm shaking and nearly breaking as he sent skidding back way back.
