Alley Across the Street from Dr. Leslie Thomkin's House Eleven Years After Waynes' Deaths

Batman pushed buttons on his belt. The batmobile pulled up to the end of the alleyway and opened its passenger side door facing it. By then Batman had checked the creature's heartbeat and breathing. The physiology seemed mostly the same. By human metrics, the creature was stable.

Batman carefully moved his cape to cover most of the green body before moving it into his vehicle, buckling it in, and closing the door. Before getting into the driver's seat he pulled out his smaller taser with lower voltage. Holding it in one hand, he used the other to carefully drive to the entrance to the underground labyrinth he utilized and put the batmobile on automatic to drive to the basement of Wayne Tower. Then he turned on the batmobile's radio to contact Lucius. "Lucius, I have a rather tall humanoid … something … I'm bringing to the batcave.

"I'm sorry Batman. What?"

Bruce turned his head to study his once double. "I know … it's able to perfectly mimic me, at least until I pull out gadgets. When I used to taser in the gauntlet, its body changed into an over sit-foot and well over two-hundred pound humanoid, but without much of a nose …"

"Mr. Wayne … were you exposed to a gas, maybe a powder?"

"If I drive up with nothing in the front seat of the batmobile or something other than what I'm describing, you can explore that hypothesis by taking samples from me. Either way, bring the cot with wheels and straps to the garage."

When they arrived, Lucius' eyes widened. His mouth fell open even as he kept one hand on the hospital bed. "What am I looking at?"

"Not sure. We're going to try to find out."

"You said it mimicked you?"

"The lower half of my face, the batsuit, my voice, almost perfectly. Enough to fool Samson." Batman's face fell into a scowl. "He choked him as me."

"Ah."

Lucid began to hover and stare at the creature as Bruce strained to put him on the gurney and strapped him to it. Lucius pushed the gurney into the medical area of the labs where they put him on a heart monitor and put a breathing mask on the green form. Bruce looked at the lax face and said, "Let's try monitoring brain waves as well."

One the devices were connected Lucius looked at the monitor and said "We have Delta waves on the high range 4 hertz."

"Good."

"Mr. Wayne."

"Yes, Lucius?"

"This … whatever this is, assaulted a man, 'you've' assaulted before."

"Yes, when Mr. Roberts was committing a crime."

"Which is what Mr. Roberts was doing when … this … assaulted him."

"As me, using a method I 'don't' use. What's your point?"

"I know you and Alfred held the international killer-for-hire that kidnapped our dear Dr. Thomkins, and handed him over to … authorities, but … is 'this' right just because we don't know what 'this' is, and he pretended to be you by 'almost' doing what you would do?"

"Good question. I have a few more I want answered before making a final decision. I have to contact someone you don't know and I promised to keep the secrets of. Lucius. I need you to leave for probably at least half an hour."

Lucius Fox raised his eyebrows. "Do you now?"

"I'm sorry."

Lucius nodded, rose, and began to walk away. Batman watched and called after him. "Lucius …"

He turned back. "Yes?"

"I'm turning off the recording devices. Then I'm cutting security."

Lucius looked away to the floor. "To prevent me from spying."

"Anyone from spying."

"And if … 'this' comes to and can do more than we know?"

"That's a risk we have to take."

Lucius sighed heavily, and turned around."I worked on the damaged batmobile, maybe I'll take her for a short spin."

Batman turned back to the master consul. "I'm cutting off communications with the batmobiles too."

Night Sky Over Metropolis Eleven Years After Waynes' Deaths

Superman was enjoying a moonlit flight watching over what he'd now come to think of as "his" city, when he heard a sound that made him fly back to his apartment. He made a "very" fast change into Clark Kent's pajamas, before picking up his phone. "Mr. Kent speaking."

"You should try not to sound so chipper at the end of what I'm sure was a long day for you."

Superman sighed. "You need me for something or did you just call to give advice?" Clark's eyes got wide at the response. He almost broke the phone hanging up.

Basement of Wayne Tower Eleven Years After Wayens' Deaths

Standing while staring at the "creature" in his lab, Batman actually had to concentrate on not flinching, when a stronger gust of wind hit him. It was harder than the others that had hit him that day. An angry voice filled the room. "What are you doing? In fact, what did you do?"

"I tasered him."

"Why?"

"Because he was choking a citizen of Gotham as me."

"So you're strapping him to a gurney in a secret location Bruce! Have you gone insane?!"

"Would you rather I have called authorities?"

"You have no right to do this!"

Batman watched Superman pace up and down. The Kryptonian kept his eyes on the green being on the hospital grade bed even while perpetually moving.

Batman concentrated on keeping his voice calm as he asked, "He's our mutual friend, isn't he?"

Superman stopped and looked sadly down at the lax green face without replying. Batman now kept his gaze on the Kryptonian. "He can read minds, dig into them too, knock people unconscious, change his shape, coloring, voice, even mimic mannerisms. He can turn invisible … and the reason you're so upset by this, by my suspicions of him, is 'not' because he's a strange looking and super-powered human being, but an extraterrestrial like you. But 'unlike' you, he doesn't scare the militaries of the world into tolerating him, but hunting him …"

"Bruce …"

"Both of you extraterrestrials, like we two time-travelers, promised to keep each others secrets and look out for each other, didn't you?"

"If you already knew all that then why am I here?"

"Because I want to know if he's okay."

Superman looked up with his mouth a little open. He stood like that in silence before narrowing his eyes as he now studied the human in a batsuit. Batman narrowed his eyes back at the Kryptonian. "I tasered him and he's been out for at least half an hour. I only have technology to monitor the health of humans here. How is he? Why hasn't he woken up?"

Superman ran his eyes over the Martian. Bruce now raised his voice. "You haven't checked yet?"

Superman growled back. "It looked like his nervous system has been stressed. And his metabolism … I think he's too malnourished to heal properly."

"What can we do about that for someone of his species in this condition?"

Clark ran a hand through his hair. "I think his cells should regenerate fine if we can give them what they need."

"Which would be?"

"Similar to us."

Batman nodded and got a bag he then ran a tube from to the Martian's arm inserting a needle into a large vein.

Superman winced. "You are really disregarding his rights."

"I'm trying to bring him to. Is that why you're so sensitive about him?"

"What are you talking about?"

"As a non-human Superman, Kal El of Krypton, technically you don't have rights. You weren't even born on earth something you unwisely admitted to a journalist."

"It's better to tell the truth and let people decide for themselves."

"Then why are you so secretive about him?"

"I've let you deduce things, but I haven't told you anything so far, and I'm not going to now."

"Because you promised. Then I'll deduce. You asked him to go to the press like you have, but he wouldn't. He's always on the run. Some person, or more likely an organization, or more than one organization, is after him. I don't think even for someone you obviously relate to, who saved your life, you'd be this self-righteous about protecting their rights if you thought they had done something seriously wrong. So, are they just hunting him due to what he is, or for something, or more than one thing, that he's done?"

Superman's brow furrowed further the more Batman spoke. Batman narrowed how own eyes and pressed his lips together before parting them to say, "So … he 'has' done something, something even your're ashamed of."

"You'd be able to ask him yourself if you hadn't tasered him."

"Would I? He's normally pretty good at getting away. I think he was turning invisible when I tasered him."

Superman spun and stared at Batman. "Only invisible?"

"What do you mean only?"

Superman turned fully toward him. "Was he phasing too?"

A weak voice spoke from the bed. "Yes … I was."

Batman bent over his patient slightly. Superman gripped both sides of the hospital bed leaning over it to look into the Martian's face. "Moe?"

Batman tilted his head also staring at the green alien. "Do I know you by another name?"

"Yes. And yes."

Superman kept his blue eyes focused on the Martian. "How do you feel?"

"Not my best. Bruce … I hadn't read your mind … enough to know … you were Batman. Then I read Samson's mind to see what he feared and found the lower half of your face and vocal cords matched. I didn't realize this till I tried it. Then I had to commit to the part."

"Did you?"

"I feared for Dr. Thompkin's continued safety, if he wasn't scared away permanently."

"Was he?"

The Martian paused. Batman raised his brows beneath his mask. "I see. Let me continue to deduce what else happened. You not only shape shift. You can replicate clothing too?"

"To a point ..."

"You couldn't completely copy the capabilities of my gear."

"I could not."

"And you're vulnerable to electricity especially when phase-shifting?"

At this the Martian kept silent. Batman took a deep breath and released it, then lowered his voice to ask. "Who are you running and hiding from?"

"Bruce. Batman, I promise to leave your city and never return if you let me go."

"Who. Are. You. Running. From. And. Why?"

"It will only put you and Lucius at more risk."

"You can sense him from here?"

"Yes."

"John."

Superman scowled. "You know what Bruce, it's really none of your business. And I can tear this whole cot apart and open a door for him."

The Martian sighed. "Please don't Kal El …"

Batman then snapped out. "Is it Amanda Waller?"

At, the freezing and wide-eyed silence from both aliens, Batman walked over to a test dummy and punched it. Then, leaning over he ground out the question, "Are you the one that put her father into a permanent coma?"

The Martian answered in a quavering voice, "Yes."
