Drugs, sex and a… baby.
Chapter 7
Max Caulfield x Mark Jefferson
AN: Another long chapter. The characters (aside my OC) belong to Don't Nod and Square Enix. "" means talking, '' means texting, italics means thinking. I recently replayed the game and realised that I misspelled Max's surname. That's been changed in all chapter, bar the ones already published.
As Max rested for the remaining time of the school day in the nurse's office she started to feel slightly better. The nurse had said that she's lucky that she didn't have a concussion and to take it easy for the rest of the day. After swallowing some painkillers Max had taken a short nap and got woken up by the nurse as she was closing the office for the day. When Max entered the hallway, she noticed that everyone had left for the day.
Walking back to the dorms, Max ran into Warren.
"Sorry." Max said as she hurried along.
Not feeling up to any guilt tripping with him, she hurried away missing the defeated look Warren had on his face as he looked at her retreating form.
When Max entered the girls' dormitories, she was immediately hugged by Dana who had been waiting for her to return.
"Good to see that you are doing alright Max." Dana said as she took Max hand and led her into her room. "Logan came up to me earlier and told me what happened. I think he feels guilty of hitting you with that ball." she continued.
"It was an accident." Max said. "I don't think he meant to hit me or anything." she continued. "And I don't blame him for any of it." Max said as she went to get up.
"Oh, before you leave. I managed to convince Courtney to put your name on the guest list for the VIP area at the party tonight." Dana said as she followed Max to her door. "I hope that you'll come." She said before saying bye and closing her door.
When she got to her own door, she saw that someone had written hipster bitch on her small message board by her door. Just ignoring it, Max entered her own room and decided to take another nap. By the time she awoke, it was dark outside. Looking at her phone, Max saw that it was past 9pm.
"Oh shit. Did I just sleep for almost five hours!" Max thought. "Well, I do feel a lot better." Max said to herself as she got up. "I might as well go to this party, but only to hear who won the contest." Max thought as she left the dorms.
When Max got closer to the gym, she could hear the music and feel some of it vibrating as she was walking along the building to the entrance. When she entered, she saw that Stella was once again working for some extra cash.
"How's it going Stella?" Max asked as she approached her.
"Hey Max. I didn't expect you to show up." Stella said. "Do you need me to take anything for safe keeping?" she asked.
"No, I'm good." Max said. "I don't think I'll be here to that long anyway. I'm just here to hear who won the latest photo contest." She continued.
"Well, don't let me stop you. Head on in." Stella said as she went back to her duties.
Walking inside was like walking into a backflash to when she was last at a Vortex party, that time she had also only come for the announcement of the Everyday Hero contest winner. As she walked along the pool, Max bumped into someone. Apologising to the person Max wondered who he was.
"He looks to be a little too old to be a student here at Blackwell." Max thought as she kept walking. "Maybe someone invited a former student?" she thought again as she came upon the entrance to the VIP area.
"Hi Courtney." Max said seeing Courtney sitting at the table making sure that no unwanted guest tried to sneak into the VIP area.
"Hi Max, I didn't think that you would come." Courtney said. "I spoke with Dana earlier and she told me what happened." She continued. "Are you alright?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm feeling a lot better after some sleep. And sorry about my outfit, I know that the Vortex club have a certain standard in how to dress." Max said.
"Don't worry about that Max. I'll let it slip this time." Courtney said as she beckoned for the bouncer to let Max into the VIP section.
After thanking Courtney, Max entered and started to look for Dana. After a few minutes, she found her dancing with Trevor. The two of them still going strong.
"Hey Max" Dana said as Max walked up to her and Trevor. "Nice to see that you decided to attend." Dana continued.
"Hi Dana." Max said. "I just came here to hear who won the latest contest that Mr. Jefferson arranged. Even though we all know who it probably is already." Max said.
"I totally forgot that Mr. Jefferson was going to announce the winner at this party." Dana said.
"But enough of that, have you had anything to drink yet?" Dana asked.
"Uh, no I'm ok." Max said.
"Come on Max, live a little. Here you can have my drink, I haven't tried it yet." Dana said as she gave Max the drink she's been keeping on a nearby table.
"I'm alright Dana, thank you though." Max said while she tried to hand the drink back to Dana. Dana however pushed the drink back to Max.
"It's alright Max, I'll get another one." Dana said as she walked over to a small bar.
Not wanting to argue Max took a sip while walking away. As she made it back towards the entrance of the VIP area, Max spotted Victoria and Nathan walking towards her.
"Hey looser, what are you doing at this party?" Nathan asked as he and Victoria walked up to Max. "I don't remember inviting you here." Nathan continued.
"That's right, so go fuck your selfie." Victoria sneered.
"Fuck you too Victoria, I'm just here to hear who won the contest." Max said before walking away from Nathan and Victoria.
Before she got fully away Nathan grabbed hold of Max and spun her around, somehow without making her spill the drink she has in her hand. Before either could say anything Mr. Jefferson appeared.
"Hey, is everything alright here?" Mr. Jefferson asked looking from Max to Nathan and then to Victoria.
"Yes, everything is fine." Nathan said. "We were just talking about who we think might win this new competition." Nathan continued.
"Yeah, well we already know who that's going to be." Max said under her breath so that Mr. Jefferson wouldn't hear.
"I'm sorry Max did you say something?" Victoria said with a sneer.
Before Max could respond Mr. Jefferson disrupted them.
"Hey, no fighting between the three of you, alright. I'm about to go up on the stage and announce who the winner is. Can I leave you alone without any of you ripping each other apart?" Mr Jefferson asked.
"Hey Mr. Jefferson." Victoria said. "Here, why don't you have something to drink as you go up on stage." Victoria continued as she handed Mr. Jefferson a glass.
"Ah, thank you Victoria." Mr. Jefferson said as he took a sip before going.
As Victoria handed Mr. Jefferson the glass Max noticed that Nathan got a suspicious look in his eyes as he looked at Victoria handing Mr. Jefferson the drink. Not wanting to stay in their presence for much longer, Max downed her drink in one go before leaving. As she exited the VIP area Max looked back and saw that Nathan was talking, almost in a scolding way, to Victoria. Victoria on the other hand didn't look ashamed or even bothered with whatever it was that Nathan was telling her. The sound of Mr. Jeffersons voice drew Max away from Nathan and Victoria.
"Hello everyone, could I have your attention. Is everyone listening, good. As you know, the Everyday Hero contest we had last semester garnered quite the attention and entries from quite a lot of you." Mr. Jefferson said as he took a sip from the drink Victoria had handed him earlier. "And as you all know is that the entries from this contest are already available for viewing at the library in town. However, we have decided to give one of the entries a little extra shine by having it displayed in a small gallery in Portland." Mr. Jefferson continued.
At Mr. Jeffersons announcement there was a sudden excitement among all the attending students at the party.
"Yes, yes, I know this got you all excited and all, so let me continue." Mr. Jefferson said as he took out an envelope. "And the winner of this competition is, drum roll please." Mr. Jefferson said before pausing to read the name on the note in the letter. "And the winner is, Kate Marsh. Is Miss Marsh present here tonight?" Mr. Jefferson asked as he took a good look around the attending students.
"She's ill with the flu." Someone shouted.
"Ah, yes I remember now, she called in sick yesterday." Mr. Jefferson said. "Well, that's all from me, I hope you guys have a continued good evening." Mr. Jefferson said before walking off the stage. Before he stepped down from the stage, he took another look around all the attending students, and when his eyes landed on Max, he noticed that she wasn't acting like her usual self and decided to check up on how she was doing.
"Hey Max, are you alright there?" Mr. Jefferson asked as he walked up to her and when she wouldn't answer him, he lightly nudged her shoulder. "Do you need help with getting back to your dorm?" he continued, with evident worry in his voice.
Before he could say anything more Mr. Jefferson was interrupted by a few of the football players.
"Hey, Mr. Jefferson. I bet you can't finish that drink in one go." One of them said.
"Yeah, I'd like to see that as well." A second footballer said.
"Well kids, I don't think that would be…" Mr. Jefferson started to say but was interrupted when they all started to shout SHUG over and over. Knowing it would most likely be a very bad idea, Mr. Jefferson still downed the whole drink he had in his hand.
"Yo, sick, nicely done." The same footballer said who had initially asked Mr. Jefferson to down the drink in one go as he did a fist bump with one of the others.
"Yes, well, that was fun boys." Mr. Jefferson said as he cleared his throat. "But I believe that I have to help Miss Caufield getting back to her dorm since it looks like she's about to pass out." Mr. Jefferson continued before walking over and lifting Max up in a bridal style way.
As Max was listening to Mr. Jefferson announce the winner of the contest she started to have difficulties concentrating on what was happening around her. At one point she could feel someone touching her shoulder and saying something to her, but she couldn't make out the words. Then there was chanting, and it felt like the whole world was moving in slow motion. The last thing she remembered is being lifted and carried out into the chilly evening.
