Kokabiel Arc Chapter 23: Team Assembly
"From here on, we are the Biblical Vanguard," Jiro said as he held everyone's hands in his gauntlet. They all smiled and nodded as they pulled their hands back.
"Hm, 'Biblical Vanguard', huh? Has a nice ring to it. How'd you come up with it?" Rias asked, flexing her hand.
"I chose that name because, as I said, all of you represent each of the three biblical factions. Irina and Xenovia for the angels and church, Rias, Akeno, Kiba, and Koneko for the devils, Raynare for the fallen angels, and Asia for the church and fallen angels respectively. Together, we'll fight against any threats to any of the three great powers and foster better relations to establish peace." Jiro said, looking between all of them.
"I see, you really thought this through," Irina said, nodding approvingly. Xenovia did the same.
"This sounds interesting; I look forward to it," Rias said, her peerage nodding in agreement.
"And we'll be led by the Red Dragon Emperor? I can already imagine the chaos as we fight against Kokabiel." Raynare said with an amused smile, crossing her arms under her chest.
Jiro chuckled at their words as Asia spoke up. "C-can I really help? I helped a little against the other fallen angels, but f-fighting a powerful fallen angel like Kokabiel... I'm just a human, I'm not sure if I can be much use." Asia said, her eyes slightly downcast. Raynare glanced at Asia, her expression softening for a moment.
"Don't go saying crap like that," Jiro said as he walked up and flicked Asia on the forehead, making her say "Eep, owiee" while rubbing her forehead.
"Don't you know there are far more ways to help others than fighting? Your Sacred Gear, Twilight Healing, could work wonders, that's for sure." Jiro said, to which Asia's eyes widened at the mention of her sacred gear.
"Yes, My Twilight Healing... it can heal wounds and injuries. Maybe I can help treat any injuries everyone may get during the fight!" Asia said, feeling a little more confident.
"Precisely, although I do get where you're coming from. You being the only full-blooded human here, naturally you'd be the weakest of the group. However, being weak is nothing to be ashamed of; what you should be ashamed of is staying weak." Jiro said, pointing his finger at Asia's face.
Asia looked up at him, her eyes wide, as he lectured her and nodded. "Y-you're right. I'll try my best to keep up with the rest of you," Asia said, a flicker of determination in her eyes.
"Good," Jiro said as the others looked at them while smiling, especially Raynare. The three faction leaders also smiled.
"Heh, quite the ragtag group you've got here, kid. I hope you can keep them all from 'staying weak.' " Azazel said with an amused smile.
"I can. They'll all be trained by me personally," Jiro said, turning to the fallen angel leader as their eyes widened slightly.
"That sounds like a good idea. Having someone of your caliber train them should be beneficial in the long run, especially when dealing with someone like Kokabiel." Gabriel said with an approving nod.
"Indeed, I look forward to hearing about your exploits, Children. So, is there anything else you'd like to discuss?" Sirzechs asked, also nodding approvingly.
"Oh yeah, while you three are here, you might want to hear about this too," Jiro said, making them look at him in curiosity and anticipation.
"I'm guessing you've heard of the fallen angels' attack on this town last week, right?" Jiro asked. They nodded.
"Yes, Rias informed me of the incident, and I relayed the information to Azazel and Gabriel," Sirzechs said, gesturing to his fellow leaders.
"Good, now I'm sure you know they were after Asia's Sacred Gear, and along with that, they had a flute named Lullaby that kills people." Jiro said as they nodded, and the others stiffened at the mention of the monster they fought. Meanwhile, Jiro walked over to a bookshelf.
He scanned through the selections and pulled out a purple book that looked old and tattered, with a portal-like swirl pattern on the bottom of the cover. On the top of the cover and spine were the words "Zeref" written in bold capital letters. The others looked at the book in curiosity, while Raynare's eyes widened in shock and anger.
"This is a copy of The Book of Zeref," Jiro said, making everyone's eyes widen in surprise while the faction leaders looked on in shock and recognition.
"I'm sure Raynare had told the rest of you, so for those who don't know: Lullaby was a demon from this very book." Jiro said, flipping through the pages and showing them two pages that showed pictures of Lullaby and their descriptions, the left page showing Lullaby in its flute form and the right page showing its monster form. The faction leaders' eyes widened at the revelation.
"A demon from The Book of Zeref?! To think we'd see one of those creatures in the modern era." Gabriel said, covering her mouth with her hand slightly as Sirzechs said, "Indeed".
"And not only that, but remember the stray devil, Viser, whom you four fought awhile ago? She was also a demon from here." Jiro said, flipping through the pages again and showing a picture of Viser.
The student council's eyes widened in shock. "What, Viser was a demon from that book?!" Rias said in shock, to which Jiro nodded.
"I suppose that explains why she had such a monstrous appearance and why she was so powerful," Akeno said. To which Kiba said, "Yeah," and Koneko scowled.
"Wait, so, you all have fought monsters like those before I arrived in this country," Xenovia asked in surprise, trying to process all the new information as they nodded.
"Well damn, did you know what that Lullaby thing was, Raynare? How exactly?" Azazel asked, turning to Raynare, with everyone else doing the same.
Raynare's eyes darkened as she clenched her fists. "Because my home was destroyed and my parents were killed by one of those things. Its name was Deliora," Raynare said in a low tone.
Everyone looked at her in shock and sympathy, particularly Jiro, Irina, and Asia, who already knew of her past, but didn't know the monster that caused her pain was one of Lullaby's kind.
Jiro flipped through the pages again. "Deliora, you say? Was it this one?" Jiro asked, turning the book to show her the page of the demon in question.
"Yes, that's it." Raynare said with venom in her voice as she saw the monster responsible for all her pain. Asia took Raynare's right hand, and Irina placed a hand on her left shoulder, trying to comfort her. The others looked at her in sympathy.
"I see, that must've been Razriel and Azalea, right?" Azazel said in remembrance of his late former subordinates, to which Raynare nodded.
"So, who was this 'Zeref' individual? Was he a 'demon' himself?" Xenovia asked curiously.
"(No, Zeref himself was not a demon, but a human.)" Ddraig said, surprising everyone except for Irina, Sirzechs, Gabriel, Azazel, and Raynare. Irina because she had spoken to Ddraig before when she and Jiro reunited, and Sirzechs, Gabriel, Azazel, and Raynare because they had met past users of the Boosted Gear.
"Jiro, did your hand just speak?" Rias, Akeno, Kiba, Koneko, Xenovia, and Asia asked in unison and surprise.
Jiro chuckled as he summoned the Boosted Gear on his right hand so they could listen better, with the book in his other hand. "Yes, it did. This is Ddraig, the Welsh dragon." Jiro said, holding up his gauntleted hand.
Ddraig chuckled at their reactions. "(Heh, Yes, I am Jiro's partner. Greetings Sirzechs, Gabriel, and Azazel, It's been awhile.)" Ddraig said to which the three faction leaders nodded while chuckling.
"(Anyway, as I said earlier, Zeref was a human, not a demon. Zeref was considered to be the strongest, most evil Mage of all time, who possessed extremely dangerous and powerful black magic. I've heard many tales in my time with my many hosts, but ultimately, the true tale of events became distorted with time, resulting in legends surrounding him. From what I know, the stories stated that at some point in the distant past, around 5000 years ago after the Great War, Zeref had caused the deaths of many people with his very presence, overwhelming them with his power. Soon after, Zeref was described as having ruled an ancient land, mastered black magic, and given birth to tens of thousands of Demons. This, in turn, eventually granted him the name of Zeref the Black Wizard. Eventually, the recovering forces of heaven managed to eradicate the weaker ones, however, the more powerful ones were too strong to kill for the weakened angel forces, and instead, they were sealed within the depths of the underworld by both the angels and recovering devils and fallen angels.)" Ddraig said, as everyone listened intently.
"Lady Gabriel, is this true?" Irina asked, turning to her superior.
"Yes, it is. I was part of that very conflict. However, in the years that followed, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, and I, since our injuries were immense, we were still recovering from the Great War and therefore too weak to eliminate them all." Gabriel said while nodding.
"That's right, and we thought we saw the last of those things. What was one doing in the hands of Kokabiel's group? Was the seal broken at some point without us knowing?" Azazel asked, thoughtfully to himself while scratching his goatee.
"So, what happened to this 'Zeref' himself?" Kiba asked, looking back at Jiro's gauntlet.
"(Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of the Black Wizard's fate. Interestingly, no one has actually laid eyes on him or is able to describe his appearance. Anyone who had encountered Zeref himself had met an untimely end. Nowadays, many people believe him to be nothing more than a legend, however, there are many groups such as cultists who worship him and see him as a sort of religious figure. They would even go as far as to practice black magic and perform rituals to summon his creations, most likely in a similar fashion to the flute Lullaby, for instance, in order to bring themselves closer to him. However, as I said, no one is aware of what he looks like or really knows anything about him outside of his power and reputation.)" Ddraig said, finishing as everyone nodded, taking in the information.
"To think he could manage all that despite being only a human," Rias said in a low yet surprised tone.
"Don't sell humans short, princess. They are capable of insane things." Jiro said, putting his hand down, but not dispersing his gauntlet.
"Anyhow, I know we're bound to run into more of those things in the future, so can I count on you all to help me deal with them if we do?" Jiro asked, looking around.
They all nodded firmly. "Yes, we'll help in any way possible," Raynare said, her eyes narrowing, being the most determined considering her history with the demons.
"Good, now then, I think that's all I have to discuss with you three for today," Jiro said, turning to the three faction leaders who nodded in response.
Jiro put the book back on the shelf as Gabriel then approached him. "Jiro, may I ask you a question?" Gabriel asked, with a curious look.
"Huh, sure," Jiro said, turning around to face Gabriel.
"As I said the previous day, I've noticed the immense power you possess with the Boosted Gear and the remarkable feats of strength you've performed over the years. With the unbridled power you wield, you could potentially conquer this country, or even the entire world, and rule over it. So I was wondering why you haven't attempted to do so." Gabriel asked, looking at him with a thoughtful expression.
Jiro looks at her in surprise, taken aback by her question, before smirking with his eyes closed. "Heh, I guess people with power like mine would be expected to want something like that, huh?" Jiro said, to which Gabriel nodded, Sirzechs and Azazel believing the same thing. In their centuries of life, they've met many power-hungry individuals who wanted nothing more than to dominate others with their power and take whatever they wanted.
Jiro opened his eyes as he continued. "Frankly, ruling over the country, or the world, or whatever, ain't really my style. I don't need to be a king or anything like that to be happy. You see, I've got Irina and the rest of my friends already, and that's more than enough for me. Besides, I've been actively fighting against people like that for years, so I'm not going to become what I hate." Jiro said as Gabriel listened intently.
"I see. You're content with what you already have and don't seek power for power's sake. That's a noble perspective. It's refreshing to see such humility despite your remarkable abilities. I understand your point of view. Power certainly can corrupt, and the lure of supremacy can be strong, but power, when used responsibly, should not be wielded to conquer or rule." Gabriel said, nodding, appreciating Jiro's perspective.
"Indeed, it's true that most individuals with such power have the desire to rule. Fighting against those who seek power and control for their own gain, while recognizing the value in the connections you've made, shows a deeper understanding of what truly matters. This is a strength in itself," Sirzechs said, also nodding, appreciating Jiro's commitment.
The group smiled and nodded in appreciation, knowing he was referring to them as his friends.
"Gotta admit, this is shaping up to be an interesting team, kid. Anyway, if you need me, I'll be searching for that war-loving, pain in the ass; Kokabiel and his buddies. You take care of yourself and your group, especially Raynare, she's a rowdy one. Later." Azazel said as he summoned a purple magic circle beneath him and teleported away while Raynare glared at where he had been standing and the others chuckled.
"Heh, heh, I suppose I'll take my leave as well. Oh, and Jiro, I should inform you that the Phen clan has backed out of any political marriages or relations with the Gremory clan after your easy defeat of Riser. So, I'd like to thank you, probably." Sirzechs said, bowing his head slightly.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I just wanted to do the fried chicken in." Jiro said, waving his right hand dismissively.
"Even so, I'd still like to reward you in some way. You can have Rias's hand in marriage instead, if you'd like," Sirzechs said. Rias blushed furiously and yelled "BROTHER!!!" in embarrassment and annoyance.
Irina's jaw dropped in irritation and fear as she instinctively edged closer to Jiro somewhat possessively. "No, hard pass," Jiro said simply, his eyebrows twitching in annoyance.
"Heh, heh, relax, I'm only joking," Sirzechs said, chuckling as Rias and Irina breathed a sigh of relief.
"Fufufu, my, my, that's good. It would've been a problem since Rias happens to already have a certain, red, fire mage she likes." Aken teased, giggling, to which Rias's face turned as red as her hair as she yelled, "AKENOO!!!" while rapidly punching her arm in embarrassment.
"Fufu, true, and our fearless leader might also happen to have someone else he likes," Raynare teased, glancing at Jiro and Irina.
Irina's face also reddened as she looked down. "Looks like you've got a death wish." Jiro said as he grabbed Raynare's head and squeezed it while lifting her up as she yelled "Gyaaaaa!", although he secretly felt his face heat up from her comment.
Everyone else laughed at the antics as they watched. "Heh, heh, that sounds interesting. I'll ask Rias about it later. Anyhow, I'll take my leave now to assist in the search for Kokabiel. I wish you all the best of luck in your coming battle with Kokabiel. And take care of Rias for me; she's also a rowdy one. Farewell." Sirzechs said as he summoned a red magic circle beneath him and teleported away while Rias glared at him.
"Well now, I'll take my leave as well. I'll assist Azazel in searching for Kokabiel. I pray for your victory in your coming conflict with him. Irina, Xenovia, I expect you two to be on your best behavior and contribute to your team the best you can." Gabriel said, sternly to Irina and Xenovia as she summoned a golden magic circle beneath her.
"Of course, Lady Gabriel," Irina and Xenovia said in unison, bowing their heads.
"Fufu, wonderful, now then, farewell for now... Biblical Vanguard." Gabriel said, smiling and waving as she teleported away.
"Heh, guess you weren't kidding when you said she was like a mother figure to you," Raynare said with a playful smile as she turned to Irina, who gave a sheepish laugh.
"Well, anyway, we're all on the same page, and we have the approval of the three faction leaders, so, like I said earlier, from here on, we are Biblical Vanguard," Jiro said. Everyone said "yeah" in unison, apart from Xenovia.
"What's wrong, Xenovia-chan?" Irina asked, noticing her conflicted look.
"It's just... Asia Argento is one thing, but... the very idea of having devils and a fallen angel as teammates... it goes against everything I've been taught, everything I believed in. I am an angel and an exorcist, a knight of the church. It is my duty to oppose devils and fallen angels, not... not form alliances with them." Xenovia said, to which the student council and Raynare frowned.
"Aw, c'mon, we already went over this. Your bestie, Irina, is an angel exorcist too, but she's good friends with these guys, and she goes to school with these devils. And on top of that, you just saw your superior: the archangel Gabriel standing alongside the devil king and Governor General of the fallen angels. Who says it's the 'duty' of angels to oppose devils and fallen ones in the modern world?"
Xenovia glanced at Irina for a second and remembered their earlier discussion. Irina nodded in confirmation. "It's true. I'm good friends with these guys here. They're not all as bad as some people believe," Irina said, her expression serious but sincere.
Xenovia gazes at Irina, her eyes narrowing as she processes this information. The fact that her old training and mission companion, a fellow angel, could find common ground with devils and fallen angels... it's a stark contrast to the teachings of the Church.
"And if I'm being honest, what the church is teaching you is far outdated. Some angels, like Gabriel for instance, don't even act aggressively towards devils and fallen ones nowadays. I bet most of those church guys are humans who've never even seen an angel before, other than you and Irina. Uh, no offense." Jiro said to Xenovia, then turning towards Irina and Asia, who said, "No, no, none taken," with sheepish smiles while waving.
Xenovia's expression hardens at his words, a flicker of defensiveness in her eyes. The suggestion that the Church's teachings are outdated and the idea that members of the Church might not know what they're talking about clearly annoy her.
"The Church's teachings are not outdated! They're based on centuries of knowledge, wisdom, and divine revelation." Xenovia said, a hint of frustration in her tone as she defends the teachings of the Church while posing dramatically with her left hand on her hip and pointing at Jiro with her right.
"Exactly why I came up with the idea of forming a team like this, to move past all that old crap," Jiro said, matter-of-factly.
"This... this is difficult. My whole life, I've been taught that angels must oppose fallen angels, heretics, and devils. To form a team with them... to accept them... it goes against everything I know." Xenovia said, feeling even more conflicted.
Irina walked over and put a hand on Xenovia's shoulder. "Well, Jiro-kun taught me to accept them, see past the church's teachings, and become friends with them, so I'm sure he can teach you the same and maybe all kinds of new stuff regarding the supernatural in the modern world." Irina said with a supportive smile.
Xenovia considers her words, her expression turning softer. While her initial resistance is clear, there's also a hint of curiosity in her gaze now. The fact that Jiro seems to have knowledge of the supernatural that goes against the teachings of the church is tantalizing.
"I... I suppose I'm not entirely closed off to learning new things. But you must understand, my beliefs, my duties... they're ingrained in me. To change them... it won't be easy. Although I'll try my best." Xenovia said, to which Irina nodded and the others smiled appreciatively.
"Glad to hear it. Alright, now that we're all on the same page, we'll be preparing and waiting for when either Kokabiel and his goons make their move and attack, or if Gabriel, Sirzechs, and Azazel manage to sniff them out." Jiro said to all of them as they turned to look at him, their expressions becoming slightly more serious.
"Yeah, it's better we stay vigilant, but what will we do until then?" Rias asked, the others thinking the same thing.
"Don't tell me you forgot, princess. I'll be training you all myself." Jiro said with a mischievous smile.
The group looked at him, eyes wide and jolted by the reminder. They had witnessed a glimpse of his strength when he fought Lullaby and now knew he was the Red Dragon Emperor. They all gulped in anticipation at being trained by such an individual.
"I said this to Rias before, but just a fair warning: training with me will be absolute hell. Think you maggots can handle it?" Jiro said, as his red eyes glowed under his bangs.
The group gulped again and shivered at his warning and glare, but their expressions remained undeterred. "Bring it on!" they all said in unison, their eyes determined.
Jiro smirked at their determination. "Hmph, I like that look in your eyes. Alright then, we'll start tomorrow since it's Sunday. After that, we'll discuss your schedule going forward until Kokabiel arrives. Got that?" Jiro said, to which they nodded.
"Good, we'll meet on the track field at Kouh Academy tomorrow at 2 pm. For now, you're dismissed, go home." Jiro said as they all prepared to leave.
Xenovia then approaches the student council and Raynare. "Um, before we depart, I suppose I should apologize for my harsh words towards your races. I have no grudge against you personally; I was simply taught to oppose you, that's all." Xenovia said in an uncharacteristically low and sincere tone.
They all smiled at her, appreciating her apology. "Don't worry about it, Xenovia, we understand where you're coming from, so there's no need to feel bad." Rias said kindly.
Xenovia looked at them with wide eyes as they continued.
Akeno: "Fufu, she's right. We're a team now, so there's no need for gloom and doom, honey."
Koneko: "You seem to like sweets, so you're cool with me, dog."
Raynare: "Trust me, I've been there, but I've passed it, so we're cool."
Jiro, Irina, and Asia, especially Irina, all smiled that Xenovia was starting to get along with everyone else now.
Xenovia smiled as Kiba chimed in. "Yup, since we're a team, let's try to get along, Xenovia," Kiba said with another forced smile and slight hostility.
Xenovia raised an eyebrow, noticing his slight hostility in his expression and voice. Jiro also noticed it and planned to ask him about it later. Before Xenovia could question him herself, Irina approached her.
"By the way, Xenovia-chan, where will you be staying for the time being?" Irina asked curiously.
"Hm, I'm unsure. I had only just arrived in this town and didn't plan ahead properly." Xenovia said thoughtfully.
Asia, who had been mostly silent the whole time, fidgeted slightly. "U-um, I know this might sound presumptuous of me, but... you could stay with us at the abandoned church, if you'd like, Miss Xenovia," Asia said shyly.
The others turned towards her in surprise. "Huh, are you sure, Asia?" Raynare asked, looking down at her.
"Yes, I am. Since we're teammates, it could be a good way for us to grow closer and become better friends," Asia said in her usual timid tone.
Xenovia looked at her, taken aback by her reasoning, and felt a pang of guilt for trying to take her life before. "If you insist, then very well, Asia Argen... no, Asia." Xenovia said, sporting a smile as Asia smiled back.
"Sheesh, you make it impossible for anyone to say no to you when you act so cute," Raynare said playfully, patting Asia's head, which made her blush and laugh sheepishly in mild embarrassment.
"Heh, well then, it's settled. Raynare and Asia have a new roommate. Now, you're all dismissed," Jiro said, to which they nodded.
Akeno summoned a red magic circle underneath the student council, and they began to teleport while waving. Before they disappeared, Kiba shot Xenovia one last glare until they vanished.
The remaining members of the group then walked outside. "Well, that was a fun meeting. Later." Raynare said as she unfurled her black wings. Asia got on her back, saying, "Bye, Jiro-san and Irina-san," while waving.
Xenovia unfurled her white wings and halo as well. "I shall rest properly for our training session tomorrow. Look forward to seeing the strength I wield as a knight of the church, Jiro Natsuo. For now, farewell, and farewell to you as well, Irina." Xenovia said, once again posing dramatically, her left hand on her hip and pointing at Jiro with her right while her white cloak flaps.
The two angels spread their wings and flew off. "That 'knight of the church' girl really is... something." Jiro said with an amused smile.
Irina giggles sheepishly in response. "He, he, don't mind her. She may seem like the stoic type, but she can be a bit of a drama queen sometimes. You'll get used to her." Irina said, waving her hand up and down as she turns to him.
"Bit of a 'Drama queen' you say, I can see that," Jiro said as they walked back into their house.
"(If I might add, I'm surprised you didn't inform them of Acnologia, since he's also a potential threat they may have to face in the future.)" Ddraig said, as they sat on the couch.
"Oh yeah, Ddraig's right. Why didn't you?" Irina asked, genuinely curious.
"Well, after all that we discussed, especially the stuff about Zeref and his demons, I don't think they need to be overwhelmed by the reveal of a third dragon god escaping the dimensional gap and being on the loose just yet, not after we just put our team together. I'll tell them another time though." Jiro said, resting his arms on the couch headrest.
"(I see, I suppose that does make sense.)" Ddraig said, thoughtfully.
"Wow, you really thought this through, huh?" Irina said, leaning closer towards him and looking up at him.
"What can I say, I'm the man with a plan." Jiro said, playfully, looking down at her as she giggled.
They sat there, getting lost in each other's eyes until they started to blush and looked away from each other. "So, um, remember when I said I wanted to talk to you about something?" Jiro said, trying to look back at her.
"Huh, oh, yeah, so what is it?" Irina said, turning back to him while still blushing. She looked at him in anticipation, although there was a sense of hope and longing in her eyes.
Jiro blushed furiously as he tried to speak. "W-well y-you see... I..." Jiro said, starting, but before he could continue, he sensed something abnormal and turned in a different direction.
"Hm, um, in a little bit, I sense something weird." Jiro said, secretly feeling not ready to say what he wanted to say and trying to change the subject.
Irina looked at him with a small pout, feeling somewhat disappointed. "Alright then, what do you sense?" Irina asked, now becoming curious.
"Kiba is flying to where Asia, Raynare, and Xenovia are," Jiro said with an eyebrow raised.
"Huh, why is the student council going there?" Irina asked, genuinely confused. She didn't have a problem with it; it was just unusual.
"No, it's just Kiba, by himself." Jiro said, turning to her.
"Just, Kiba-kun? Why? Now I'm even more confused." Irina said, her eyes wide in surprise.
"Only one way to find out," Jiro said as they walked out of the house. He unfurled his dragon wings and took off, with Irina doing the same with her angel wings.
Sometime earlier
Two female pure-blooded devils had just arrived in Kuoh Town and were at Kuoh Academy, waiting inside the student council room in the old school building.
One of the devils was a young girl who had long blonde hair tied into twin tails with large, drill-like curls and was wearing a light purple dress with dark purple accents and a blue bow at the front and back. Three feather-like extensions, mimicking a bird's tail, protruded from the dress.
The other devil was an older woman who had silver hair and was wearing a blue and white French maid outfit with long sleeves and a white maid headband on her head.
"Thank you for bringing me here, Miss Grayfia," Ravel said, smiling while looking up at the maid.
"You're welcome, Lady Ravel. Sirzechs is having an important meeting right now, so this is a good way to pass the time. Now all we have to do is wait for Lady Rias." Grayfia said, smiling.
