Chapter XIII: Let the Games BEGIN!
Nemuri Kayama took a sip of coffee while looking over the results of their psychological evaluation of their students. It was no surprise that most of them still felt uncomfortable upon returning to school, but she was happy that they came, nonetheless. The R-Rated Hero knew that this was just the beginning of the many adversities they would face in their journey into heroism and yet she has faith that they'll overcome them.
That said, what truly caught the dominatrix-themed heroine's attention was the session she and Inui had with Kazui Kurosaki. That meeting shed light on some of the speculations she had on the young man and, suffice it say, it revealed a rather mature yet disturbing mindset for someone so young.
Kayama eyed the stack of papers in front of her while her mind drifted to that session nearly a week ago.
*****Flashback*****
Kazui sat calmly in a well-lit room full of books on psychology and mental health. Off to the side, a shelf full of that literature stood while a mahogany desk was next to it. Ryō Inui, otherwise known as the hero Hound Dog, sat behind the furniture while Nemuri Kayama was next to him on an oak chair with a velvet felt-covered cushion.
"I'm glad you could join us, Kazui," the dog hero opened up. "I'm sure you already know why you were called here, right?"
The boy nodded. "I do."
"At least we're on the same page." Hound Dog rested his elbows on his desk and interlaced his fingers while staring at the young reaper. "It has come to our attention that during the USJ Incident, you killed some of the villains that attacked your class."
"We've seen the footage from the cameras in the USJ and your classmates were all witnesses to that," added Kayama. "We want to know why you did that. Do you understand the gravity of your actions?"
Kazui met their gazes and replied, "I do, but I don't regret it." He could see a faint reaction of surprise from the two adults. "They were trying to hurt us, and I had to protect my classmates."
"It's clear that you care deeply about your classmates, Kazui. It's admirable," Kayama gently interjected. "But there's a concern about the way you dealt with the situation. Killing is a serious matter, and we need to understand how you came to that decision."
"You want my honest answer?" The teachers nodded. "It was either them or us. The choice was easy. If it ever happens again, I do it again in a heartbeat."
They didn't expect that kind of answer from someone of his age. Most kids would feel some kind of guilt or shock after committing something as heavy as taking a life. Not Kazui. No, there was no remorse in his tone, and he even said he was willing to do it again if need be.
It was concerning for a teenager to have a mindset like that.
"Look, kid, I get that you wanted to protect your classmates, but killing those villains was too much." Inui was scratching his head, completely lost on how to deal with this kid mentality.
"You're right. It might've been too much," Kazui agreed. His teachers thought they were getting somewhere but he continued, "However, I don't feel guilty or remorseful about my actions. Those villains were about to hurt my friends, and I couldn't let that happen."
"Killing isn't heroic, Kazui. Heroes find ways to resolve situations without resorting to extreme measures."
"I wasn't being a hero that time, Inui-sensei," Kazui stated firmly. "I was trying to protect the people I care about. If someone threatens them, I'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe."
"We admire your dedication, Kazui," Midnight expressed. She was sincere about how the teen was steadfast in his desire to protect his classmates. "However, there are other ways to ensure their safety without taking a life."
"I get what you're saying, but in that moment, there wasn't time for alternatives," argued the hybrid. "I didn't have the luxury to think about heroism and ethics. I had to be decisive. It about was acting quickly to eliminate a threat."
"Your actions might set a precedent for other students," Hound Dog stated. "We want to teach them that there are other ways of dealing with villains than resorting to violence."
"I understand the perspective, but in that very moment, it was clear what those villains wanted to do to us." Kazui straightened himself and leaned closer to the two faculty members. "They were there to kill us… violate us even." The teachers saw his face contort into one of anger. "Why should I spare them when they could do the things they planned for others? It's better to get rid of the problem now than let it fester later on."
"Kazui…" Inui-sensei's voice was low yet firm. "That kind of thinking is villainous."
Nemuri quickly turned her head to the dog man in surprise.
"That's where the danger lies. That kind of thinking is what villains are made of. You're treading on dangerous grounds."
However, that surprise wouldn't stop there as Kazui answered.
"Because it doesn't conform to the accepted standards of how a hero should act." The reply no doubt caught the attention of the two UA faculty members. "I never considered myself to be a hero. I am, above all else, a protector. I don't seek fame or recognition because it won't matter if what's precious to you is gone. I'll do what it takes to protect the ones I care about even if I have to stab the enemy in the back."
Kazui sighed. His reply surprised his two teachers given the flabbergasted looks on their faces. Nonetheless, he was adamant in his stance on the matter. These aren't just his values that he carries, but his father's too.
"I don't care about being labeled as a hero or a villain. All I want is to protect those I cherish. I can live with the choices I made during that incident. I won't feel regret nor guilt in my actions because I know I did the right thing."
A tense silence followed the young man's reply before Hound Dog let out a tired breath. He had a hand over his head and said, "It's clear this conversation isn't going anywhere. How about we schedule another session in the future?"
"Maybe with more time, we can find a middle ground that preserves your desire to protect without resorting to taking lives," added Kayama.
Kazui nods in resignation. "I understand. I will be available if you ever need me. But know this, I won't change my stance. I'm a protector, first and foremost. You might not agree with me, but I won't waver."
With that, Kazui left the room. Midnight and Hound Dog stared at the door where the young reaper had exited, their minds still lingering on the conversation they had with the boy.
"What do you make of all this?" the dog man questioned, looking at the dominatrix. "His conviction is strong, but it's almost unsettling how he easily accepted killing as a solution."
"It's a tough situation, that's for sure," responded Midnight. "He's not approaching this like a typical hero-in-training."
"I know." Inui leaned back in his swivel chair. "If anything, his mindset is more that of a survivor."
Raising an eyebrow, Kayama asked, "What do you mean?"
"It's as if he's seen the darkest parts of heroism and decided to step right into them. However, that is a problem. Heroes are supposed to rise above those dark parts. We're supposed to protect without resorting to the same tactics as villains."
Midnight nods in understanding. "I get where you're coming from but think about it this way – his priority is to his loved ones, not society's expectations. He sees himself as a shield, not a symbol. And in his eyes, that shield has to be unbreakable."
"I guess I'm struggling to wrap my head around it." The guidance counselor sighs. "Killing villains to protect others is a slippery slope. What if he loses control one day? What if he starts seeing threats everywhere?"
"Those are valid concerns. We need to guide him to a healthier mindset, one where he isn't consumed by fear or vengeance. But we also can't ignore that his approach is born from genuine love and concern."
With a grumble, Hound Dog answers, "It's just frustrating. We're supposed to mold these kids into heroes, not watch them potentially turn into something else entirely."
"Inui, remember that heroes come in many forms," Kayama reminded. "Maybe Kazui isn't destined to be the classic, shining symbol of hope. Maybe he's meant to be something else, one who takes on the darkness others can't face."
Still rather pensive, Hound Dog had to agree. "You have a point. We can't force him into a mold he can't fit in. But we also can't let him walk this path."
"Agreed. Kazui's still young and impressionable. Maybe we can help him strike a balance and help him channel his fierce determination into a more constructive direction."
"I hope so, Nemuri." There was this lingering doubt in the dog man's voice. "I just get the feeling there's more to this."
"I felt the same way since I first met him. I just hope we're making the right choice in making him conform to some of the values we live by." Nemuri stood up and stretched her arms. "Well, I'll be off."
"Sure thing. By the way, don't forget about your role in the upcoming Sports Festival."
"I know, I know," she assured with a couple of waves of her hands. When she finally exited the guidance office, her thoughts returned to the mysterious boy she and her colleague had a session with. "I hope I can get to understand you more, Kazui. Maybe I can finally get to know more about you and see what truly drives you."
*****Flashback End*****
Nemuri yawned. While that meeting with the enigmatic gingerhead was informative, it opened up more questions than what she bargained for. His way of thinking wasn't that of a hero. No student on the Hero Course would have this kind of mindset. Even if she specializes more in quirk analysis and guidance, she still needs to understand the mindset of a student to fully create the appropriate approach for their learning.
Kazui was just different. His skills and mastery alone could put any hero to shame and his determination to protect those he holds dear is admirable. Truly, the boy was an enigma unlike any other.
"Ugh…" groaned the heroine. "I need to get some sleep."
Midnight decided that it was time to rest. Besides, she still had to host the Sports Festival tomorrow.
Loud cheers filled the air as the excitement of Japan's premier sports event was now underway. The stadium was jam-packed with eager spectators who were excited for thrilling events that would follow.
In the waiting rooms of the stadium, Class 1-A waited their turn to be presented. As soon as they arrived at UA, they were instructed to change into their gym uniforms. The reason for this was to show fairness among the entire student body and not just favor the Hero Course.
"Ready for your speech?"
Kazui looked to his left to see Momo. He nodded, though he couldn't help but be self-conscious. "Y-Yeah, I am."
"Oh, good," said the Zen'in princess but quickly noticed the slight pink in his cheeks. "Kazui, are okay? You seem flustered."
If Kazui was your normal boy, he'd just deny that. However, he is anything but normal and that goes with how he addresses issues. He'd face them head-on, just as he was taught, even if it involved the girl of his affection.
"Somewhat," the reaper answered. "To be honest, it primarily concerns you."
"Me?" Curious, Momo probed further. "What is it?"
The hybrid leaned into Momo and whispered, "It's… um… about last time." He paused before finally revealing, "The kiss."
The girl's eyes widened, which was quickly followed by an intense blush. When she got a look in his eyes, she was quickly filled with uncertainty. Maybe the kiss was too much. "I'm sorry about… y-you know," stuttered Momo. "I… if you think I was too forward–"
Before she could finish, Kazui cut her off. "Momo, I'm not mad that you did what you did that time."
"You're not?" she questioned, a little relieved.
"No." Kazui eyed the sorceress and gave her a content smile. "To be honest, I kind of liked it." That answer made the girl gasp, which unfortunately garnered the attention of their classmates. "Listen, if it's alright with you, can we talk after the Sports Festival… just the two of us?"
"Is this a…?" Momo quickly shook that thought out of her head. It was too early and too wishful to think of that happening so soon. However, she would never turn down her best friend. "Of course."
Meanwhile, as the others fell into hushed conversations regarding the potential couple especially a certain pink girl and her shipping schemes, Izuku jotted down notes on a notebook he brought with him. The inheritor of Limitless wanted to go through some options for Uraraka and his other friends so they could make it past the early stages of the festival.
"Hey, what's that?" Uraraka suddenly asked. Her face mere centimeters from the greenhead.
A faint blush appeared on Izuku's face thanks to the proximity of the brunette. Inside his mind, the ancient spirit merely chuckled at his predicament. "Oh… um… It's just some ideas I want to run by you for your quirk later."
"Ooh, can I see?"
It was supposed to be a surprise, but Gojo urged him to show it. "Okay. Here, take a look."
"Yay!"
But as they barely began going over the advantages of Ochako's quirk in the competition, another voice came from behind them, making the two friends jump in surprise.
"Midoriya." It was Todoroki. The dual-haired teen also looked over to their class representative. "You too, Kurosaki."
Given the tension in the air, everyone can see that the son of Japan's second-ranked hero was serious. He was eyeing arguably the two strongest in their class like a predator.
"It's a known fact that the two of you are objectively the strongest," he stated. The dichromatic eyes of Todoroki sharpened as he glared at the two spirit warriors. "Your Limitless and Fullbring respectively could be the most powerful quirks on the planet."
Midoriya wanted to say something but was cut off when Todoroki continued.
"That's why I want to challenge both of you. Here, in the Sports Festival, I will beat you two and prove that all I need is my ice to become a hero."
"That kind of thinking is what's going to get him killed," Gojo remarked. He was disappointed that someone as talented as Todoroki would hinder himself like that.
The others were just as stunned as the two who were challenged.
"A declaration of war, huh," Kaminari said while watching. "That's unexpected."
The stare-off continued, the two teens that were called out didn't falter under the gaze of the Half Hot, Half Cold user. In fact, Midoriya just smirked. Had this been him from months ago, he would've crumbled. However, he now had confidence thanks to the guidance of his Gojo-sensei.
"Is that a challenge?" Izuku shot back, surprising everyone except Kazui and Momo. "I'm not about to lose my chance to prove myself. I'll do my best to win this thing and, if I'm ever going to face you, know that I won't give you an easy fight."
For a brief second, Todoroki's expression could almost be called amused. "I'd be disappointed if you did." He then turned to Kazui and asked, "How about you, Kurosaki?"
Much like Midoriya's, the hybrid's face had a smirk. The only difference was that he was more cryptic. "Challenge accepted. However…"
Everyone's eyes widened. In a split second, they could've sworn Kazui's eyes had five pupils.
"If you think only using one-half of your quirk would be enough to beat us, then you aren't cut out to be here." Not waiting for a reaction, Kazui left the room.
This left Todoroki with a mix of emotions ranging from feeling underestimated, insulted, and all the way to angry. This was evident by the clenched fist that was shaking on his sides.
As for Izuku, he agreed with Kazui. Not giving your best was both disrespectful and a hindrance. His sensei already said this earlier and hearing the hybrid say it to Endeavor's son only reinforced that idea.
That said, Todoroki wasn't the only one seething. Barely contained, Bakugō was fuming that he wasn't recognized.
"Them? The Strongest? If there's someone he should call out, it's me. What do those two have that they deserve to be challenged by him?" The ash-blonde's fists tightened so hard it hurt. "I'll show them that it was a mistake to underestimate me – him, that stupid Deku, and the fucking freak."
Eventually, the announcement finally came. Class 1-A emerged from the tunnels only to be bombarded with shouts from a very excited crowd.
"Presenting the students who stood unyielding against the villains during the USJ Incident, let's give it up for Class 1-A!"
Upon hearing Present Mic's words, Kazui and Momo led their class into the open.
"Oh, wow!" Ochako looked around in awe. "I knew there'd be a lot of people, but actually being here makes it so real, right?"
No one managed to answer since they were also astonished that this many people came to watch them.
Class 1-A took its place in front of hundreds of students who were also competing in this year's Sports festival. Kazui and Midoriya noted the purple-haired boy from before among the General Studies classes; said boy just eyed the two but his gaze was sharp and calculating.
"And now, introducing the referee of the Freshman events this year, it's the R-Rated Hero: Midnight!"
"No fucking way! Woohoo!"
Midoriya winced at how loud his sensei yelled in his head. Despite being rather risqué in her choice of costume, the boy actually found Midnight to be a good Arts History teacher and a great quirk counselor. The real purpose of her provocative get-up was to maximize the usage of her quirk through her skin by being quick enough to tear.
As the dominatrix heroine walked up to the podium, she struck up a pose and winked. "You kids better behave unless you want to be punished."
Even the little gremlin that was Mineta looked nervous at Midnight when she swept her hungry gaze across the crowd.
"Um… is it alright for Midnight-sensei to be here?" one random student from the gathered participants questioned. "I know she's our host and referee, but don't you think she's a little inappropriate to be here?"
Midnight took offense to that. "Hey! I'll have you know my teaching credentials are certified!" She quickly composed herself and brought her microphone to her mouth. "Now, I'd like to call our Freshman Representative, Kazui Kurosaki, to come up here and say a few words."
Kazui looked at Momo, then at Izuku. The two who knew his secret nodded, urging him to go to the stage. But, before left, Momo had one more thing to say to him.
"Good luck," she encouraged with a smile. The reaper smiled in return and proceeded to the podium.
Kazui already knew what he was going to say. While most of it was all on him, the last part of his speech came directly from the man who influenced him the most.
His father, Ichigo Kurosaki.
From out of nowhere, an overpowering pressure enveloped the entire stadium. Viewers in the stands as well as the students felt the intense weight bearing down on them as they watched in both awe and fear while Kazui took his steps to the microphone. The teachers in the VIP box gripped their seats to not falter under the unknown power. Class 1-A felt their bodies tremble while their gazes stayed glued to their class representative. Even their sister class, 1-B, was shaking under what seemed to be a supernatural phenomenon. What's more surprising was that the only people who appeared to withstand the godly force were Momo Yaoyorozu and, to no one's surprise, Izuku Midoriya.
When the boy was finally on stage, the mysterious pressure gradually faded, granting levity to everyone affected.
-{}-
"What in the world…?" Cementoss breathed after recovering from the sudden appearance of the invisible force. "Was… was that Kurosaki?"
"I… I don't know," Vlad King answered. He was still clutching his chest after having his breathing momentarily taken. "I've never felt something so powerful before."
"Was that… part of his quirk?" Thirteen's voice wavered as she struggled to maintain composure.
"I'm… not sure," All Might said while in his muscle form. Even with his strength, he was still left helpless under the mercy of the mysterious pressure.
Even Power Loader's armor seemed to shudder as if it could sense the unseen power in the air.
Amidst the confusion, Nezu and Recovery exchanged worried glances while grappling with the situation. Once the other teachers finally recovered, the little chimera principal stood and spoke up with a steady voice.
"We may not understand how Kurosaki unleashed that power earlier, but' it's clear that we are dealing with something extraordinary. Remain vigilant, observe any changes, and prepare to adapt."
The UA staff exchanged uncertain glances but nodded, nonetheless. Still, their curiosity was piqued, and their thoughts were racing with questions about the mysterious pressure, whatever it might be.
-{}-
"Did you feel that?" Kazui questioned the crowd through the microphone. He didn't need them to reply since they most certainly felt it. "That weight… pressure? It's something all of us experience and that is fear. What fear, you might ask? Fear of failure, of never meeting our goals, of being worthless. As aspiring heroes and students in general, these are some of the thoughts that plague our minds as we take up the profession of our choice which aims to serve the public and uphold justice. It's a heavy burden that comes with its own set of expectations and, much like the pressure that you felt earlier, is overwhelming. It's the fear of never filling the shoes of those who came before us that hinders our growth as future heroes and individuals as a whole."
The students who listened to the speech whispered to each other and agreed wholeheartedly. Many of them chose this profession for several reasons; be it, fame, money, legacy, or something altruistic. However, it was only when they listened to Kazui that they realized how big the roles they needed to fill were and the weight of responsibility that awaited them.
It made them afraid. Would they be able to uphold the values past heroes have left behind? Would they be able to maintain the long-lasting harmony those that came before had fought to establish? Would they be able to maintain the world that was built by the hands of not just heroes, but people as a whole? However, what Kazui will say next would change those views.
"There's nothing wrong with being afraid," the reaper stated. The audience was drawn to his words. "Fear is a natural part of humanity, and it is normal for us to feel this emotion. However, one should never let fear dictate your thoughts and choices. Nothing good could ever come from fear. We must learn to rise above it. And right now, this is our time to show what we're capable of – that we're more than ready to face the pressure dealt to us by the professions we chose." He paused. With a hardened, determined gaze, Kazui uttered the words that uplifted the hearts of his fellow heroes-in-training. "So, here I say," he raised a clenched fist, "Abandon your fears. Look forward. Move forward and never stop. Retreat and you will age. Hesitate and you will die. It's our moment, our time to show the world that no matter what fate throws at us, we'll be able to conquer it." He raised his fist high and cried, "GO BEYOND…"
"PLUS ULTRA!" the students finished. Their spirits uplifted and determination at an all-time high, they were more than ready to show their mettle in this competition.
"Now, that was one heck of a speech!" Present Mic's announcement just roused the spectators even more. "It was so inspirational that it moved me to tears."
"You're overdramatic, Mic," Aizawa groaned. That said, he had to give it to his student. "But I have to admit, that was indeed impressive."
After his speech, Kazui went back to his classmates and was immediately hounded by them. Momo was the first to reach him (no surprise there) and quickly praised him for his well-thought-out words.
"I must say, that was truly encouraging speech, Kazui," Momo remarked with a smirk. She had a hidden pun that she hoped Kazui would notice.
Luckily, the hybrid recognized it and returned a grin of his own. "I see what you did there, Momo. Who knew you'd be one for puns?"
"I'm not. However, I'd make an exception since to me, you are the very definition of encouragement."
"Aw shucks… Now I feel all self-conscious."
The heiress chuckled. "Well, at least look alive because the others are coming and, judging by looks, they have something to say."
Kazui took note of the rather… sullen faces of his classmates. Out in front of the group was Izuku who was the only one not looking dejected. The others all glanced at the reaper before prying their eyes away from him. This made him quirk an eyebrow and wonder why they were acting this way.
"Hey, Kazui. That was a nice speech you've just said," the wielder of Limitless praised before gesturing to the others behind him. "By the way, the others have something to say to you. I hope you listen to them because this looks pretty important."
"I can see that," Kazui remarked before bringing his attention to the rest. "Hey, guys! What's with the long faces?"
Tsuyu took the lead. "Hey, Kazui," the frog girl began earnestly, her normally unreadable face showing regret, "We… we wanted to apologize for how we treated you after the USJ Incident. We were cold and distant because we didn't understand your situation."
Kazui blinked in surprise as another of his classmates, Hagakure, stepped forward, her invisible becoming visible as she said, "Yeah, we kind of judged you without really knowing your side of things. Sorry."
"We should've realized that you did what you had to do to protect us," Sero added, his eyes conveying an unspoken apology.
Sato joined in, nodding. "You saved our lives, and we never properly thanked you for that."
"He's right, man," Kirishima chimed in with his characteristic enthusiasm, clapping Kazui on the back. "We should've realized you were just doing what you had to do. It's pretty manly, actually!"
The others voiced their agreement and remorse as well. Even though they couldn't erase what they unwittingly did, they were determined to bridge the gap that had formed between them and the reaper.
Kazui was taken aback by the unexpected display of empathy. He looked around at his classmates with a mix of surprise and gratitude. Though it was appreciated, they didn't have to apologize. They didn't need to.
"Guys, it's okay," he replied softly. "I understand that what I did was extreme, and I wouldn't fault any of you if you stayed away from me."
"It didn't help that you laughed like a madman while gutting that Nomu to bits," Mineta remarked offhandedly, earning him multiple glares that shut him up.
"What we wanted to say was…" Mina spoke up. "We misjudged you, Kazui. We looked at just your actions and never the purpose. We were in a dire situation that day, and none of us could've done anything. However, you acted and defended us."
"We know you wouldn't mind it, but we do!" Ochako cried, voicing their shared thoughts. "Kazui, to do what you did all while knowing the consequences is the bravest thing there is."
"That's because the Nomu wasn't my first kill in either this world or in my original realm."
"And you did it to protect us from harm," the gravity girl finished. She looked at Kazui who was staring at her, then at the others.
Although Kazui already said they didn't need to apologize, the rest of Class 1-A, except Midoriya and Yaoyorozu, were still apprehensive. While they were willing to accept due recompense from the reaper, it still made them feel remorseful for their cold treatment of Kazui.
However, Kazui was anything but resentful.
"As I said," he spoke softly, "all of you don't need to apologize." Everyone looked at Kazui and saw he had a sincere smile. "It doesn't matter if you're afraid of me because of what I did. I understand that. It won't change the fact that I will do that again, no matter how many times I have to."
"Kazui…"
"…Because that's who I am. I'm a protector; always have been, always will be."
Kazui's declaration hung in the air, and his classmates exchanged surprised glances, clearly taken aback by the depth of his conviction. Nobody wanted to say anything, still trying to come up with the right words to say to their class representative.
Just then, Īda stepped forward. His glasses reflected the glimmer from above, hiding his eyes from Kazui. Slowly, he tilted his head slightly upward, revealing his stare full of admiration for the young hybrid. "You really are an amazing person, Kazui. Selfless and loyal. Even when we were keeping our distance from you, your view of us never changed. Truly, how could we deserve such an amazing class representative?"
Momo and Izuku looked at each other and then at the rest. They all saw their classmates nod at Kazui in affirmation.
"We're in this together, Kazui," Jirō said with a grin. "All of us should've remembered that sooner."
Sato crossed his burly arms over his chest. "You know, the USJ Incident should've made us all closer. In fact, we should've been tighter from the start!"
The initial surprise and fear they had for Kazui had changed, and he had become more than just a classmate or their class representative; he was someone they could rely on when the going got tough. This gave way to respect and a renewed sense of Unity for Class 1-A.
Kazui felt a soft touch on his shoulder. Looking behind him, he saw Momo giving him a warm smile. Just behind the ravenette, Izuku stood with a smile of his own coupled with a nod.
"See, Kazui," Momo spoke. "You're not alone. You have us with you. Together, we'll protect each other."
The reaper closed his eyes and shared a smile with his classmates. Opening them once more, he breathed out a sigh of contentment and said, "Thanks, guys, but that's still my role, and I'll be damned if I'm letting one of you take it from me."
Shōji chuckled behind his mask. "We know, we know, Kazui. That's why you're our class rep."
"…And nothing's gonna change that," Hagakure finished.
"Without further ado, let's get started!" Midnight suddenly announced through the microphone, gaining back the attention of the students.
"You know what? Why don't we face this upcoming challenge together… as a united Class 1-A?" Kazui told his classmates, grinning in anticipation of the challenge ahead.
The others shared his enthusiasm… well, most of them, and together, they all cried a united and resounding, "YEAH!" that got everyone's attention.
"Looks like Class 1-A is all hyped up thanks to their class rep! That said, this is where you'll begin feeling the pain! The first game of the festival… what could it be?" Midnight spoke as an ultra-wide hologram screen appeared behind her. The screen depicted a digital slot machine that, after the R-Rated heroine raised her crack whip, spun rapidly to choose the first event of the competition.
After a few seconds, the spinning finally stopped, settling on the words "OBSTACLE COURSE" with a caricature of a man tripping over a traffic cone next to it.
"So, it's gonna be an obstacle course," Izuku muttered as he stared at the screen. "What do you think, Gojo-sensei?"
"This is gonna be a cakewalk," the ancient spirit remarked. "Just use teleportation and you're good to go!"
"Hold on, there might be instructions."
"All eleven classes will participate in this treacherous contest," said Midnight who began explaining the rules of the game. "The track is four kilometers around the stadium." She paused for a moment. Like a seductress, she licked her lips in excitement and faced the entire first-year student body with a knowing grin. "I don't wanna restrain anyone, at least, in this game. As long as you leave the course, you're free to do what your heart desires! Now then, take your places contest– huh?"
A call interrupted Midnight's instructions, prompting her to touch the earpiece connected to the school's communications grid. After a few nods followed by a smile that would make anyone's skin shiver, the seductress-themed hero continued with some rather interesting additions.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have some interesting developments! I just received word that there are some changes to the obstacle race!" The students wanted to complain but were immediately cut off. "As per instructions from the organizing team, it is hereby declared that Izuku Midoriya and Kazui Kurosaki are forbidden to use their teleportation and hyper-speed quirks respectively!"
"WHAT!?" roared the first of the freshman hero class.
"I know it may seem unfair, but given the… how you say, overpowered nature of their quirks, it is a must that the two mentioned students are to traverse the length of the course like their fellow competitors. Now, with that out of the way, take your places contestants!"
"You and your big mouth, sensei."
"How the heck should I know they were gonna give you and Kazui that kind of stipulation!?"
"Ughhh… At least I can still use Blue if I want to."
"That's the spirit!"
"Again, not helping!" Eventually, Izuku let out a sigh. "Let's just get this over with."
-{}-
"That was evil of you, Nezu," Recovery Girl told the chimera with a frown.
"It may seem like it, but then, the competition would be dull if we let those two students finish it in a matter of seconds," Nezu replied nonchalantly.
"I suppose you're right," Recovery Girl conceded. "That said, I get the feeling you already know who will take the top spot in this race."
Nezu chuckled, confirming the old nurse's suspicion. "Oh, Chiyo. Despite putting a handicap on Kurosaki and Midoriya, it's already clear that first place would go to either one of them."
UA's top physician stared at his superior and colleague and sighed. "You and your schemes, Nezu."
The rat supreme replied with a hearty laugh.

Because of the incident at the USJ, UA took the precaution of upping the security of their facilities. This was even more evident when the Sports Festival arrived. There was always the option of postponing the event, but UA would not want to show weakness after a tragedy. The Sports Festival must go on. Besides, it was time for some security maintenance.
With improved safeguards courtesy of Power Loader and Cementoss, it seemed as if it would be enough, but the school governing body decided it would be wise to hire professional heroes as guards. This would be a winning scenario for both the hired heroes and the school – UA would get tight security while the heroes get a front-row seat to the potential rookies they might hire soon.
One particular hero had this mindset as she watched over the railings from the topmost balcony of the stadium. With her fluffy bunny ears focused on the prospective heroes, Rumi Usagiyama watched these would-be protectors with interest. However, there was one student that caught her attention. After hearing his speech, the Rabbit Hero: Mirko had eyes on one Kazui Kurosaki.
Rumi is a loud individual, never hesitating to speak her mind. She is fearless, willing to brave any adversity that may come her way and, as a woman known to be independent, she values the strength derived from oneself rather than that of a group. She isn't one to admit needing help or helping others, mind you, she just prefers to do things by herself.
These standards Rumi holds are the reason why the rabbit-themed heroine is interested in Kazui Kurosaki. Hearing him speak about fear and never letting it rule you resonates with the very morals she's lived by. However, what truly appealed to her was the last few words the boy had spoken.
Courage to overcome fear. Strength to go beyond one's limits.
With an excited grin, Rumi whispered, "Show me what you're made of, Kazui Kurosaki."
Eager fans and hero enthusiasts aren't the only viewers excited about the Sports Festival. Deep within the underbelly of the criminal world, villains of all kinds were also watching the competition. Ever since the incident at the USJ, several known villains took interest in this year's UA Hero Course freshmen thanks to what they heard in the villains grapevine. They want to scout out who among the emerging soon-to-be heroes would be a prominent threat to their exploits.
Those involved in the infiltration themselves want to probe for some more info on the two students that caused their failure. That said, not everyone was eager to study their enemy.
Shigaraki clicked his teeth. The man-child didn't want to bother watching the Sports Festival but under the orders of his sensei, he had to if he ever encounters those two again.
"There they are," Shigaraki growled upon seeing the two who sabotaged his operation. "When I get my hands on them, they'll be nothing more but dust!"
"And I can guarantee you will have that chance, Tomura," the sensei assured the impatient brat. Again, he monitored his apprentice through a viewing screen. "However, this is a great opportunity to learn about their quirks and how to counter them."
The leader of the League of Villains relented, not wanting to argue with his master. "I understand, sensei."
Another person spoke through another screen. "This will be a valuable chance to observe those two boy's quirks."Giggling like a madman, he continued, "Imagine the possibilities if we manage to obtain those two powerful quirks."
"Indeed, Garaki. For now, let us enjoy the festivities brought about by UA's arrogance."
As for Tomura Shigaraki, he stayed silent while eyeing the two children who ruined his chance to kill the Symbol of Peace. "One way or the other, I will make the two of you pay."
Inko Midoriya quickly ran to the telephone hanging just next to the kitchen. After having bathed and drying herself, she was about to change her clothes and was about to head to the stadium where the Sports Festival was taking place.
Apparently, UA decided to offer free sitting to any parents wanting to watch the events. They will be given a dedicated booth of their own coupled with free meals and beverages. Truly, Japan's number one hero school spares no expenses for its students and their supportive parents. Heck, the school even offered to provide travel fare for those coming from far away.
"This is the Midoriya Residence, how may I help you?"
"Hello? Dear?"
Inko gasped. "H-Hisashi?"
"Honey!" From the other side of the line, Hisashi Midoriya choked upon hearing the voice of his wife. "I'm so glad to hear you after a month without calling."
"Me too, sweetie." Inko shared her husband's relief. Her eyes had little pools of tears threatening to spill. "How are you? Are alright? Are you eating well?"
Hisashi chuckled. "I'm fine, darling. I'm more concerned about you and Izuku. Tell me, how is my little hero?"
"Oh, Hisashi, Izuku's doing wonderful! He managed to get into UA, and in their Hero Course, no less!"
"Really!? Oh god, I'm so proud of him! But how'd he manage to get in when… you know?"
Inko knew what her husband meant; so, she began explaining the events that occurred ten months prior. From the incident when Izuku first awakened Six Eyes and Limitless to the dreaded USJ Incident, Hisashi listened intently to his wife. The moment he heard of the two powers that dwelled in his son, the family man asked again to make sure he heard right.
"Are you sure that's his quirk, honey? Six Eyes and Limitless? And he has a split personality that's named Satoru Gojo?"
"Yes, dear. Based on the specialist's analysis, Six Eyes and Limitless work together to be properly used. Without out Six Eyes–"
"Limitless can't be used to its fullest," Hisashi finished, surprising Inko.
"How did you…?"
"A lucky guess?" He sounded hesitant. "And you're sure that the name you heard that took over our son is Satoru Gojo?"
"Yes, dear. Why? What's the matter? Will our baby boy be alright?"
"You don't need to worry about Izuku, darling," Hisashi the sound of her voice, he knew his wife was stressed. It was times like this that he wished to be next to her and give her a hug than being in the US. "He's strong. I do not doubt in my mind that he'll overcome whatever challenge that may come his way."
His words seemed to have the much-needed effect. Inko calmed down and a loving smile graced her face. Hisashi always knew what to say when she was troubled.
And it seemed that more good news would be coming to their family.
"However, I think it's best if I say that to him face-to-face next week."
"What do you mean– WAIT! Could it be?" Inko's eyes widened.
Knowing that she was surprised, Hisashi said the words that would make Inko the happiest woman in the world. "I'm coming home, dear," he spoke softly and lovingly. "The three of us will be together again."
Inko Midoriya could stop the tears from flowing. After so long, her husband, Hisashi Midoriya, will come home. Finally, they'll be together again.
"This… this is wonderful news!" Inko cried between sobs of joy. "Izuku would be thrilled to see you again after so long."
"Me, too. Thank god for whoever decided to relocate me to Japan. We don't have to wait long, dear. But, before my return, I sent a package for you and Izuku."
"Package?"
"It's not there yet? It was supposed to arrive today."
"I was about to head out to UA and watch Izuku, but maybe I can wait a little longer–"
DING!
"Ooh, that must be it!"
"Then I won't keep you any longer. I can't wait to see my two precious treasures again."
"Hehe, you charmer. Goodbye, honey. I'll see you soon. Love you!"
"Bye, sweetie. Love you too."
Once Hisashi hung up, Inko quickly went to the door and was met by a young deliveryman carrying two big boxes.
"Delivery for one Inko Midoriya!"
"That's me! Where do I sign?"
"Right here, ma'am." The delivery boy presented a clipboard with the delivery receipt. Inko signed the document and was given a copy of the transaction. "Here you go, ma'am. Enjoy your package!"
"Thank you!" After receiving the gifts, Inko took the boxes inside and opened them. Within the first box she opened were various dresses, beauty products, and some sweets. No doubt this one was meant for her. The contents made her chuckle, thinking of how much Hisashi always spoiled her even when they were just dating. "Oh, honey; you always go the extra mile for us."
She then checked the second box, and it was clear this was for their son. It was filled to the brim with hero memorabilia – action figures, posters, and even trading cards.
"Wait, what's this?"
Inko noticed a black case under all the hero merchandise inside Izuku's box. Curious, she removed the stuff on top of it first before taking out the object. It was a leather case with strange symbols engraved into it. There was a piece of paper – a talisman from the looks of it – sticking to the case's lock. Inko traced a finger on the strange charm and to her surprise, it burned away.
"Eep!" she quickly took her hand away, not wanting to get some bad blisters. Once the talisman was completely turned to ashes, the case unlocked itself. Slowly, she took a peek at what was inside and found three objects.
The first was a black rope. It might seem ordinary at first, but Inko couldn't help but feel something powerful emanating from the woven lanyard.
The next one was a long bag. The matriarch of the Midoriya family grabbed the long container fabric and, to her surprise, it had a sword stuffed inside. It had a red leather-wrapped handle, an oval tsuba with crescent holes on each end, a golden pommel, and a black sheath with a white cloth tying it closed. Pulling on the binding fabric, it loosened the cover and the weapon, letting her see the blade itself. It was sharp, that much was clear. However, what drew her attention was the engraving etched on the base of the blade.
"Seigan," she read. It was the Kanji for "vow."
Finally, the last object was a small black felt box. Once in her hand, she opened the small case and gasped. It was a pair of wedding rings. Inko was about to touch it when suddenly, a vile feeling washed over her. Images of monsters, warriors, and a young girl turning into a horrid monster flashed before her eyes.
Inko quickly closed the ring box and placed it back inside the larger case along with the other artifacts. She noticed a note inside the leather case, took it out, and read it aloud.
Dear Izuku, these three objects are our family heirlooms that I've been searching for while in America. I will pass these all to you, but you are only allowed to use Black Rope.
Dear Inko, as much as possible, do not open the ring box. Only Izuku and I can open them. For now, you are to give Black Rope to our son and keep the other artifacts safe.
I know you have questions, dear. Rest assured that I will be answering all of them when I come home. Until then, stay safe and enjoy the gifts I sent. I love you both,
Hisashi.
Inko was confused, but she could only stare at the strange objects sent to her by her husband.
"Hisashi, what's going on?"
Halfway around the world, Hisashi Midoriya just finished calling her wife, Inko, and he never felt so happy. However, the situation with their son put him on edge. He was glad that he sent those three artifacts to them but with the emergence of Satoru Gojo, things are progressing far too quickly for his liking.
"I wish the week would be over," he spoke with worry for both his boy and his love. "I never thought my son would be Lord Gojo's choice."
Looking out through the night sky, he reminisced of the time when he was still with his family and living happily. They are still happy, of that he's sure, but knowing Izuku's condition before now made him want to return earlier to better prepare him.
Izuku Midoriya may have been quirkless, but he was not powerless.
But now, things have changed. With the Honored One guiding his son, Hisashi Midoriya was both confident and afraid of the challenges that would come Izuku's way.
"Inko, Izuku," he whispered. "Wait for me… wait for me."
