I DON'T OWN HARRY POTTER OR ANY OF ITS ORIGINAL CHARACTERS, ONLY MY OCS AND THE SITUATIONS I PUT THEM IN. WARNING: There will be cussing, lemons, and violence. (Also, someone said I should put please don't steal. Didn't think I needed to, but ok. Please don't steal my stories.)
Some characters may seem OOC at some points at different times in the story, but I hope I explain that in the story when the time comes. Some things happen pretty fast at first (like certain relationships or legal stuff), but again I try to explain it. Some people may go back and forth at times, but I'll explain it! You get the idea. Spelling and grammar errors, I recheck constantly, so sorry if some slip by. Some character bashing in the beginning and for a little while, but that doesn't mean it will last the whole story. I don't hate certain characters though it may seem like that at times. THIS IS A WARNING. Though I will put a warning at the beginning needed. I do not condone all of these things, but my mind can be really fucked up, I apologize now. So, I am mixing both movie and book but I'm mainly following the movie. Though I will try to make a good blend between the two. Big thank you to everyone who reviewed, followed, and/or favorited. You guys rock! Also want to thank everyone for their patience, continued enjoyment and coming back no matter how long I take along with the kind words and support. It really means a lot.
WARNING: SOME VIOLENCE IN THIS CHAPTER.
Chapter 19: Don't Look Now.
Remus was on his way to drop off some needed paperwork at the Ministry. He had been moved to being the steward of both Harry and Sirius' houses.
Thankfully, none of the werewolf laws forbid it.
This also made it so that Remus had some more insight at the Ministry. Of course, once Sirius was cleared and they weren't with the kids, Sirius would join him. Remus would be going between the Ministry and Hogwarts.
Sirius teased him that he was a mini-Dumbledore. Well, he had before Remus had glued him to the Potter Manor kitchen ceiling. By his pants.
Just as Remus turned a corner, he collided with someone sending them flying.
Quick as a flash, he caught them while pulling them up.
"Cor" a feminine voice breathed.
There in Remus' arms, in all her pink haired glory, was Tonks.
Remus righted her, once more fighting a blush when he noticed just how cute she was. Not to mention how good she smelled. "Tonks" he remembered. "We need to stop meeting like this Miss Tonks" he joked.
With a teasing smile Tonks had to flirt "Maybe we're drown together. You do keep catching me".
Remus smile widened a bit. "I was taught to never let a lady down" came the banter.
Tonks' smile was blindingly brilliant.
Remus caught himself blushing despite his best attempts.
'Ohhh' came Sirius' voice in his head.
Remus almost groaned. He knew that tone. Sirius, and Remus honestly, had used it plenty of times to tease James about Lily.
And Lily about James when they dared.
Remus was annoyed at how good at mind magic Sirius was. As if he needed to be that close to his best mate.
'Moony and Tonksy sitting in a tree. S-n-o-g' Sirius' mental song was cut off as he burst into giggles as Remus mentally threatened him. He did so while keeping a smile on for Tonks.
"I should get going" Remus said out loud. Tonks' smile dimmed slightly before he went on. "I started helping out at Hogwarts while one of their teachers are indisposed" he explained. He knew he had to dismiss himself before looking like a fool.
'Oh go on Moony. Have some fun' Sirius tried to encourage though he went ignored.
'Can't' Moony told him. 'I have a best mate to murder' he said making Sirius snort in his head.
"Uh, maybe I'll see you later then?" Tonks asked hopefully. Something in her big, bright eyes compelled him when he was going to decline.
"I hope so" Remus found himself say quietly.
Tonks' lashes fluttered a little at the sound.
With that, Remus quickly rushed away.
Tonks watched a moment later before rushing off to Bone's office.
####SCENE BREAK####
"Miss Lupin. Stay after class" Snape drawled out his order.
He didn't sound angry.
Vivian wasn't super pleased about it but figured she might as well see what his problem was.
Ron definitely wasn't happy about it, which his expression made obvious.
'I'll be right outside' Ron mentally promised as everyone filed out.
Soon, it was just Vivian and Snape in the potions' classroom.
Snape's cold expression twitched almost unnoticeably.
He reeked of nerves.
Vivian didn't speak. She simply sat calmly at her desk with fingers steepled, waiting. Watching.
It was slightly unnerving to Severus.
Or perhaps that was his own nerves trying to drown out and corrupt every other action he observed.
"You have a proficiency in potions" Severus totally surprised her. "Does that surprise you to know?" he asked searching her expression.
"You admitting it surprises me" Vivian stated honestly.
"Miss Lupin-" he paused.
How was he supposed to broach the subject he so wanted to speak of? Narcissa had written him impossible news.
Severus was afraid to hope her words were true.
Hope was a dangerous emotion for Severus Snape. He hadn't hoped for anything in many years.
"What is it?" Vivian refrained from presently attempting to break his mental shields.
Severus began lightly touching different bottles and vials on his desk. Anything that kept him from actually looking at the young girl. "I received an interesting letter in the post this morning" he eluded.
"Oh, do you receive the Quibbler as well? Fascinating, isn't it" Vivian gave her smirk like smile.
Severus sent her a definite stink eye. He was sure she was taking the piss out of him. However, at the moment it didn't matter given the letter resting now in his inner breast pocket.
"The post I speak of happened to be an informative, excitable letter from…a friend" he hinted.
Vivian held in the quip about him actually having friends.
Though she had bit her tongue. Literally.
When she didn't reply Severus finally indulged the name. "Narcissa Malfoy".
Vivian blinked slowly with a small frown on her face now. It had taken all of her training not to outwardly react at the name.
'Narcissa mentioned me to Snape? What did she say? Why?' Vivian couldn't help wondering.
She needn't wonder long as Severus continued.
"You see" his usual thought out speech at its steady tempo. "We have a few people, a few…loved ones" he said. That actually surprised Vivian. "A few loved ones in common".
This was a side of Snape that Vivian had never actually seen face to face.
He appeared…scared.
He still couldn't face her as he swallowed harshly.
Severus couldn't remember being so nervous. Not for a lifetime it felt like.
He didn't like it. At least that hadn't changed.
"You mean Draco" Vivian asked in a controlled tone.
Severus was surprised over the lack of venom or jealousy expressed. 'Doesn't she realize that everything he has, has ever had should be hers? Is rightfully hers?' he thought. Lucius and Narcissa had never actually thrown Vivian out of the Malfoy House.
She was still the heir. Female or not.
'Everything Narcissa said in her letter about Vivian's life before Lupin. What was hinted to. Strives and horrors she refused to tell me stating it was not her place to divulge. Only Vivian's. None of that should have befallen this child' he looked in those deep green eyes.
Severus was anxious to know Vivian's life.
Anxious and terrified.
He wanted to know, had to know yet at the same time he feared knowing. He had failed to save her that night so long ago. 'Why would she want you in her life?' he thought with a barely held in flinch.
'Ignorance is bliss' he knew the phrase well.
"And his sister" Severus finally spoke out loud. He was now looking at her head on.
It was Vivian's turn to look away. Her jaw and fists clenched unhappily.
Before she could get too lost in memories, Severus added "My goddaughter".
Vivian looked at him with big eyes wide and breathing coming out in quick pants. She stood, knocking over her stool. "Your-" she cut herself off. Her gaze darted left to right as it felt like the world was spinning.
Vivian was sure she was going to vomit! Every cruel word, cruel action, everything Snape ever did to her came rushing to the front of her mind with a violent force.
"Vivian" Snape shocked her with the use of her first name. His hands were up in an effort to calm the obviously distressed young lady.
She tensed further.
"I have to go" Vivian went to run off. She knew she was running away but it didn't matter! She had to get out.
"Please, wait" Severus found himself pleading as he rushed after her. He was desparate to keep her with him. To talk.
Suddenly, the potions' room doors were slammed open with great force. On the other side was a very angry Ronald Weasley.
He caught Vivian in his arms, holding her tightly as she held him. He glared over her shoulder at Snape. Ron didn't even react or wince when Vivian's grip turned just a shade too strong.
She held onto Ron for dear life.
Ron's blue eyes were like ice as they momentarily pierced Severus, stopping him cold in his tracks.
The sharp snap at the tip of Severus' tongue turned to ash as he looked in Ron's eyes.
Now Severus was in no way afraid of Ronald Weasley. Obviously.
However…something in the blue gaze did bring Severus up short. Before he could analyze these feelings or gather himself, both heard a sniffle.
Vivian was crying.
Ron managed to hold himself back from out right attacking Snape. He wanted to explode and demand exactly what Snape had done. He hadn't even read Vivian's thoughts. He simply felt her emotions and acted on instinct.
'Please' Vivian pleaded in her lover's mind.
Of course, Vivian was his top priority. With one last glare, Ron steered her out.
Severus was left in the dungeons alone.
Always alone.
Severus sighed. He sat heavily with head in his hands. The candles around his desk seemed to dim some.
There he sat trying to figure out where he could possibly go from there.
With some hesitation, Severus pulled out parchment and quill.
Quickly, as he scribbled out two notes, he sent out a request for Luna Lovegood to come to his classroom.
'I suppose Lovegood could help with such a delicate situation' he thought before preparing his formal letter.
####SCENE BREAK###
Harry sat in the library happily ignoring his homework while writing on illusioned paper.
Everyone was busy, so Harry took this chance to write down some names.
Death Eater names.
Death Eater supporter names.
He also wrote down the names of Death Eaters who had been forced into the service.
If anyone happened to glance over Harry's shoulder, they'd see an innocent list of sweets.
'I suppose they can be seen as such if one were to ask the dementors' Harry hummed. 'Though I can't imagine anyone of them taste very good' was the afterthought.
Harry was gearing up for the dementors trial run which had finally come. The time was perfect.
"This is really sweet of you Cedric" came a soft, sweet voice that he knew.
Cho and Cedric took a seat nearby, not seeing Harry's desk which was more or less tucked away.
"Anything for you Cho" the handsome Cedric smiled at the pretty Ravenclaw. Harry had to admit, they were a very attractive couple.
Both of their cheeks dusted pink as they looked at one another.
Harry had to smile at the display though it slowly slipped off his face. His green gaze gained the look of someone lost in memories. Unpleasant memories.
Harry couldn't even begin to describe what it meant having Cedric alive.
Of course, he was ecstatic over Sirius and Remus being alive, that went without saying. Not to mention the others. He was also happy to see Cho so carefree and unknowing of her would have been future.
Cedric Diggory though…
Cedric was the first actual blow to Harry's belief in the world. Of any sense of goodness or fairness.
The senseless loss of life, the life of such a genuine soul, snuffed out like a worthless candle…
Harry could still vividly see Cedric falling to Pettigrew's killing curse. He could hear Cedric's spirit asking him to bring his body back to his parents.
Harry closed his eyes as the ringing of Amos Diggory's wail of total despair at having lost his only and beloved child rang through Harry's ears.
Some people looked around curiously as it seemed that the library had gotten darker. Like a shadow thrown over the room almost.
None of the memories of the night in the graveyard would ever leave Harry.
They were burned into his mind. Just like the image of a smiling, confused Sirius falling through the veil. Of seeing Remus and Tonks dead, hands outstretched as if reaching for one another. Many more memories, all of death, forever etched into Harry's memory.
Cedric was technically the first casualty in the second war. Even if people refused to believe so until it was too late.
Slowly, Harry managed to shake the memories back to the back of his mind.
Harry went back to his list.
'Where are you' he thought, eyes on Umbridge's underlined name.
During his last sleepless, nightly walk Harry had heard Albus speaking about the unsavory woman.
Harry had made sure his invisibility cloak was free of any enchantments. Enchantments he had always thought Albus had maybe placed to make sure he'd always be aware of Harry's movement.
Still, Harry used the shadows. He didn't know if Albus had any charms on his glasses either.
Harry did tread carefully. McGonagall had been with Albus. Harry knew from Sirius that some animagus abilities came through in human form. He didn't want McGonagall to smell or hear him.
Albus and Minerva were both apparently upset over Umbridge's disappearance.
Bones had messaged them in case Lockhart needed protection. Everyone thought the former undersecretary would come after Gilderoy.
Bones was apparently greatly ticked off. She had just gotten around all of Fudge's road blocks making it possible to formally arrest Umbridge. Especially after Tonks and Shacklebolt did some digging on the woman.
There were some suspicious steps in her past. Some links that had her connected to many missing persons cases.
People who had all gone against Umbridge at one point or another.
However, when the aurors arrived at Dolores' flat, it was all but deserted.
She should have been there since she had been under basic house arrest.
Yet, it was now sparse. Clothing was moved, furniture covered and no forwarding address.
Harry wrote down another name. He knew about Umbridge's past, her background. He knew the lies she spread and what she was trying to hide. Who she was trying to hide.
'Know thy enemy' he couldn't help thinking.
Harry had to wonder if she was simply covering her tracks or was there something more.
Harry had to smile a bit due to one aspect.
Albus had agreed to help in the search for Umbridge. This meant that he would be away from the castle even more than usual.
'Though to be fair, he's gone half the school year anyway' Harry thought. 'I've seen Peeves in the school more than Dumbledore' Harry silently huffed. He didn't really count meals since those were literally just eating, not that Dumbledore always arrived for those either. At least, not always on time.
Twirling his quill before getting things back together, Harry thought 'Still, it will be nice having one last person to watch out for tonight' he tried to keep his spirits high.
Another thought hit Harry. He was a bit worried that Remus and Sirius were disappointed with his lack of prank pulling. They said they weren't, but still.
He wondered if he could pull something over Albus. Something to both amuse his uncles while making sure that Albus' focus is continued to be split.
'I'll ask the others' Harry thought, finally packed up and ready to go find someone from his party.
Hearing new voices, Harry turned. Daphne Greengrass and Tracey Davis were apparently put off being unable to find a tome they needed for herbology. A book Harry had right before him.
Harry went over with book under his arm and an easy air. He put the book down with a kind half smile as the two snakes quieted.
Both were a bit weary, not used to speaking directly with Potter. Even at his and Longbottom's party, they kept some distance. Though, they did speak to Vivian Lupin, being her dorm mates and somewhat friends in the Snake Pit.
"Heard you talking. Here you go, I was done with it anyway" Harry offered. With that, he turned to walk off.
"Potter" Greengrass lightly called. Tracey looked between the handsome boy and her best friend.
Harry looked over his shoulder curiously. Daphne and Tracey gave him brief nods.
He returned it in the same fashion. With that, Harry grabbed his bag and began walking out.
The Slytherins were grateful over his subdued attitude. He hadn't made a big deal over helping or speaking to them. He made it seem like a perfectly normal, pleasant everyday occurrence. That put them slightly at ease.
Half smile still in place, Harry nodded to Cedric and Cho who had noticed him. He then made his way to the halls.
Right behind his favorite people. Using stealth, Harry walked behind the oblivious Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle.
Draco was reading a history book about Helga the Defiler as Crabbe flipped through some catalog.
Goyle was speaking animatedly, not caring that the others seemed less than interested.
"But my Da said that the mudblood actually cried" Goyle went on with a snicker. His big shoulders rising and falling in laughter. "He was sacked" Goyle said before scowling. "Well, he was until that Bones bitch got in the way. She got the filth his position back, and a raise!" he raged.
"Animals don't deserve jobs" Crabbe finally commented, his own barnyard like appearance flying over his head.
The two began laughing more, big bodies making it almost impossible for Harry to see Draco. He used a mirror charm to watch the boys from the front. Thankfully, nonverbal spells meant that even his dense prey didn't notice him.
Malfoy rolled his eyes so hard, it actually looked like it hurt.
Draco buried himself deeper in the book as if it would somehow block out his two henchmen like friends.
Harry thought he could hear Draco's braincells actually killing each other the more they had to listen to the two boys behind him.
"My Da" Goyle went on, now pleased with Crabbe's attention.
"Shut up" Malfoy was heard grumbling while flipping a page.
'Yeah, that's his line' Harry held in a snort.
The boys went on, much to Draco's annoyance.
Harry really doubted that half of what Goyle was saying was true. He might have believed it, but Harry didn't think Goyle Sr. did half the things he had boasted to his son.
Though some brawn and money Goyle Sr. may have head, power was something the man definitely lacked. At least Lucius Malfoy had some talent for manipulating people.
Goyle Sr. was about as coordinated and subdued as his son. Not at all.
As the boys went on, another smile found Harry.
This one was dark in nature.
It looked so unnatural on his almost angelic face.
'I suppose I know who just moved to the top of my list though, don't I?' Harry thought with an audible chuckle.
He easily blended in totally with the shadows as the others spun around at the noise.
There was nothing but an empty hallway.
"Let's go" Malfoy put on a brave face. "Your jabbering has gotten on my nerves. Peeves is probably listening in. We have lunch anyway" he quickly moved, almost ran, out of the hall.
His lackeys followed close behind with uneasy looks behind them.
'People have a bad habit of blabbing around here' Harry tsked, finally becoming apparent just before any other student could stumble across the scene. 'Easier for me, suppose' he acknowledged.
He did find it pretty funny that this was the second time a mini–Death Eater had tattled on their Daddy. Unknowingly or not.
With a carefree whistle, Harry made it to the main hall, moving around other students going about their day. Making a mental note to sneak in and visit Vivian, Harry made his way to Herbology.
####SCENE BREAK####
Hermione was concentrating. A light sweat covered her forehead plastering a few unruly curls to her skin.
Ron dutifully passed her ingredients. He was helping Hermione, though both knew he was anxious to finish and get back to Vivian. However, if he rushed, everything could be ruined.
So, he listened to his wife who made him promise to focus on Hermione's tasks. Then he could get back to Vivian, blowing off the rest of their classes and making sure she was ok.
Besides worrying for Vivian, Ron didn't really mind being his studious friend's potions helper.
It wasn't like Binns would notice they were missing anyway.
"I'm closer. I can feel it" Hermione was heard muttering.
Ron didn't comment.
It was an absolute truth that he thought Hermione was brilliant. Scary, but brilliant.
That being said, he wasn't sure that anyone would ever find the cure for lycanthropy. Even if he prayed there was one. He knew the toll it took on Vivian and Remus' bodies. Besides, then they prevent someone like Fenrir spreading the disease again.
Though Hermione also talked about curing vampirism.
Something else Ron wasn't sure was possible.
'If we do solve them, it won't be for a long time' Ron thought. Then again, with Remus and Sirius close to finishing their training and becoming full Death Knights, both men, like the children, would be around…for a while.
Winky popped into the converted Room of Requirement bashfully handing some potions supplies to Hermione.
"Here Winky" Ron caught her attention as he handed her some letters. "Harry said we'd be receiving another guest soon" he informed the she-elf.
Seeing the wide-eyed look aimed his way, Ron told the little being "A proper guest. They're to be in the room next to Petunia's" he explained.
Winky noticeably perked up at this information. She couldn't wait to tell her friend, which was how she came to see Petunia. It was easy as Winky didn't totally see Petunia as a human. She was like a very, very tall elf almost.
Petunia hadn't been terribly insulted when this was voiced. She simply gave a less strained than usual smile and nodded to Winky, saying she felt Winky was her friend as well.
Sirius had been pretty surprised but hadn't ruined the unintentional moment.
"Yes Master" Winky chirped, not catching Hermione's sigh. With a pop, she was gone.
"She'll come around Mione" Ron tried to assure the former head of S.P.E.W, though she heard the 'Maybe' he didn't vocalize.
Hermione didn't argue. She knew that like most elves, Winky may never come around to calling the witches and wizards by their given names. Dobby had gotten much better. So had Kreacher, which was surprising. Especially since he didn't insult any of them either.
Well, sometimes still Sirius, when Sirius insulted him, however usually the two had a neutral relationship.
Finally, Hermione had to voice her concerns. She knew that Ron loved Harry. She was sure that he almost loved Harry as much as she did. Though that could have been said for many of their group, she knew Ron and Harry had been drawn to each other, their friendship was all but written like destiny.
"Do you really think it's wise for Harry to bring Dudley to Potter Manor?" she asked, turning to face her red headed friend. "He's not the Dudley that had changed his ways. The one Harry remembers with fondness".
"I wouldn't be too sure of that" Ron said, rubbing his chin. "As promised to Petunia, Sirius had checked up on Dudley. He was thin. Too thin even with odd bruises".
"But the charms on Marge" Hermione went to say when Ron shook his head.
"You and I both know that people like Marge Dursley can find loopholes on ways to make someone's life hell. Even her formally beloved nephew" he pointed out.
Hermione bit her lip, thinking.
"Besides, Petunia told Sirius that Dudley's letters said he was actually talking about Harry, and not in a hateful manner" Ron shrugged.
Hermione decided she'd need to know more about those letters. About what Dudley had said.
Deciding to move on, Hermione mentioned "It seems Sirius and Remus' training is going well. Remus' classes are fun, Moody makes it interesting" she went on.
"Sirius and Remus are naturals" Ron said with approval. "Moody's always been fun, paranoid or not. He's even better when not kept a captive in a trunk" Ron added.
Hermione sent him a chastising look that he promptly ignored.
"Do you think Snape will ever forgive Dumbledore for bringing in Remus to teach?" Hermione asked with some humor bleeding into her tone.
"Professor Snape" Ron teased, making Hermione shoot him a flat look. She was sure she never sounded that onery when correcting him before. "And who knows" Ron shrugged again, chopping some roots. "He's forgiven him before. He's always forgiven him. But" he made her look at him, brown eyes shining curiously. "He has Luna now" was pointed out.
Hermione nodded before smiling. "Neville's going to be bringing Luna here for a date later. Obviously, they'll change the room" she gave a small chuckle, "I think he's a bit jealous of her pet project".
Though his face briefly scrunched, Ron snorted. "Everyone knows Neville is far better company than the bat" he said.
Hermione had to agree with that.
"Still, I envy Luna's patience" Hermione ignored his smirk. "I can't wait to know everything Snape knows" she sighed, stirring the pot.
"You probably know it all anyway. You're worth ten of him and Malfoy combined" Ron said almost offhandedly.
He missed Hermione's smile.
Hermione didn't think she could ever possibly express how much she loved Ron. Of course, it wasn't the kind of love Molly Weasley hoped, but it was love and it was real.
Despite their rocky beginnings, Ron had become on of the most important people in Hermione's life.
"I know, I know" Ron said out loud, responding to her thoughts. He was touched, but decided to tease her. "I'm impossible not to fall madly in love with" he sent her a 'what can you do look'. Hermione began to chuckle.
That grew when Ron began posing like Lockhart.
"Ronald" Hermione giggled, playfully pushing him.
He fell off his stool, rolling around while now imitating Draco Malfoy. "She's killed me, she's killed me!" he said before reaching for an unseen light. "Tell Vivian, I love her" he then fell back with eyes closed and tongue sticking out.
Hermione was laughing loudly.
Suddenly the door opened and in walked Luna.
"Oh my. Is Ronald in need of CDR?" she asked innocently. At her mispronunciation, Hermione couldn't stop from gripping her stomach, more laughter leaving her.
"I'm afraid Vivian would be quite cross with me if I performed mouth to mouth" Luna said knowingly. "However, I am more than willing to jump on Ronald's stomach if need be" came the offer.
In a flash, Ron was up showing he was fine. "I'm fine Luna, thank you. Maybe some other time" he tried to assure.
Knowing Luna, she would have followed through.
Hermione was now doubled over in laughter as the other two shared an amused look.
####SCENE BREAK####
Vivian sighed, still in bed with the curtains drawn.
She was hugging a plushy, the same Grim plushy Sirius had gotten her from their first meeting. It was one from his youth which he had once more given her. A homemade gift from Lily Evans, after she was in on their secret.
She made it when he ran away from home.
He said that he trusted Vivian with it.
It had all the marauders' names on each paw. However, Remus had taken Peter's off, putting Lily's name instead. Remus had found his, the mini Moony, and given it to Harry after doing the same stitch work.
Vivian had hidden away since her confrontation with Snape.
Despite what she said, she did hope Ron made it back to her soon.
Vivian didn't know how to feel. She didn't want to feel. Not for Snape. Vivian had always thought that with her curse, her life was anything but simple. However, the more she learned since coming back, the more she realized that that was an understatement.
More than ever, Vivian felt like a child. A child hiding away from the big bad world, clinging to her favorite toy as if it would keep her safe.
Vivian burrowed even deeper into the green bedding with the stuffed 'Paddy' at her side. Soon the covers were pulled over her head. The door soon opened, and she was in no mood to socialize.
"So these are the Slytherin girl dorms" the voice of Remus gave a low whistle. "Too bad it's a bit too late" he joked. "Though Prongs used that old cloak too much anyway. Who knows the trouble we would have gotten into here" came the light tease as he gently moved one of Vivian's curtains. "There were quite a few cute Slytherins you see. Of course, none as cute as the current party" he said as explanation with a teasing, loving grin while taking a seat on the side of her bed.
He smiled at the unintentionally adorable picture she made.
Those big green eyes peeped over bedding at him, with the stuffed Padfoot's bead eyes even doing the same.
"Hi Da" came the mumbled greeting. "How'd you get in?" she asked curiously.
"Being a parent and professor does have its perks. Though being a marauder makes it even better" he gently tweaked the tip of her nose that he moved the blanket to see.
He then pretended to rise. "Though I can always leave if you prefer" he said.
As expected, Vivian was quick to grip his wrist. "No, stay. Please" she asked making his heart ache at the sad, soft tone. She moved so he could climb on the bed.
Remus allowed Vivian to adjust, snuggling with her head on his stomach facing the end of the bed.
The treasured plushy never left her grip.
He ran rough, but gentle hands through her soft, short dark locks.
"I'll never leave cub" he promised. "Not even when you tire of me".
"Never tired of you" she swore with speech still slightly muffled, now by the top of toy Padfoot's head.
"What has you troubled so, my love" Remus asked the burning question. He hated seeing Vivian so low. He wanted to bring that smile back to her face. Remus had to wonder on something James had said to him about parenthood long ago.
'The love, the unconditional love hits you before you even know it'. Remus realized his best mate had been right.
Vivian sighed. "Snape" came the answer.
"Do I have to smack him? I'll break his bloody beak this time. I'll even set Padfoot on him" Remus tensed, defensive of his daughter.
The genuine worry and passion in his speech brought her smile back, albeit briefly.
"Yes. No. I don't know" she admitted.
Remus stayed silent, letting her work out whatever was happening. That didn't stop the urge to run down and shake it out of Snape though. He refrained. Just barely.
Slowly, she tried to explain. "My whole life at Hogwarts, I've felt, known that Snape hated me. Hated what I was. Who I was. There was always this malice. This disgust rolling off of him. It was almost suffocating. No matter what I did, I felt like he was judging me and I didn't measure up".
"Even if he never said anything again, I just knew it" she said. "Even when we brewed in silence, his gaze weighed on me. I don't know why I even cared" she ended softly.
"You brewed together?" Remus asked, learning more about the girl he had come to see as his own.
Vivian nodded. "It was after you hit him" she explained. "He never said those things again. Never even let people repeat it. Even Malfoy" she went on. "Yet, I knew he was thinking it. Wasn't he? Did he know" doubt and pain bled into her tone.
Remus continued to offer silent support. "I mean" Vivian sighed. "Luna said she had something she wanted to talk about. This couldn't be it, could it?" she asked not expecting an answer.
"He would watch me. Just watch me when we brewed. When he spoke it was soft, nothing like the vile, clipped purposeful tone I was used to from him" Vivian noted. "But he had to hate me. I mean, I'm the werewolf best friend of his archenemies' son, not to mention the daughter and ward of the other two. To top it off, I'm in Slytherin forcing him to have to speak to me. I mean, of course he hates me. He's always hated me. …Hasn't he?" she desperately wanted an answer.
Remus wished he could give her one.
He kissed the top of her head. "I can't honestly say" he said hearing her sigh. "Severus…well, he has had a complicated life. He's a complicated man" Remus pointed out. "Perhaps…" he paused.
"Perhaps?" Vivian probed after a moment.
"Perhaps, I should sit down and speak with him. About you" Remus gently offered.
Vivian didn't answer at first.
Honestly, she didn't know what she wanted. Remus was right. Snape was complicated.
Did she want to know, at least on some level, another missing link from her past? From her brief life before being infected? Did she really want any of that? 'It shouldn't mean anything to me, should it' she thought.
Even if that link came from someone who had once made her life hell?
Vivian didn't know. She asked Remus.
Remus lovingly petted her hair. He figured it was best to let her work this out as he offered support. "I can't answer that for you Love" he sighed sadly. "But no matter what, I'll be here for you" he promised.
Not knowing what else could be said, Vivian scooted further into Remus' embrace, which he readily allowed.
####SCENE BREAK####
Bellatrix broke another mirror that had been placed in her and Rodolphus' dungeon.
Of course, the pieces seemed to turn to dust then nothing before she could attempt to make a weapon.
Neither husband nor wife could look at each other for long.
Their…turning…had been less than pleasant on all accounts.
What was worse was that they knew they'd eventually have to face their master as such. Turning into such lowly creatures didn't stop eithers desperation to escape and find Voldemort.
They were sure he was alive.
"I'll kill that bitch" Bellatrix was muttering. "Filth. Dirtying up my line" she hissed, thinking of Vivian.
"They should have let us kill her that night. Put her down like she deserved" Rodolphus muttered in agreement. "Or at least find a way to make her useful. She's a pretty thing" he mocked. "She could have been sold to make new followers".
Though his features had shifted, that apathetic expression was able to still come across.
"Dirty. Dirty. Dirty" Bellatrix went on.
Rabastan looked at both of them with a mixture of disgust and pain.
Not only was his line being tainted as well, but his brother and Bellatrix weren't even human anymore! He couldn't do anything about it either.
The shackles around his wrists saw to that. He could move, but any attempt to attack the other and he shot against the wall, strung up, in a flash.
It was hell having to watch the downfall of his family and being unable to correct it.
Suddenly, a thought hit him. "Maybe he can fix it" he caught their attention. "No doubt he could break this enchantment on you. Reverse it. He'll see we had been loyal to him" he went on, gaining excitement.
This could be fixed!
"Our Lord would gladly undo such foul magic" Bellatrix spoke, now with a light in her too big of eyes. "He will see that we are his most loyal. His most trusted. Of course we could undo this" she then added with a clap. "We may even be able to use this on mudbloods. Like the one upstairs" she now referred to Hermione.
Finally, Rodolphus perked up a bit though his expression did not change.
"A way to make them useful" he spoke out loud. He looked up at his now much taller younger brother. "When this is reversed, we're going hunting" was sworn.
Rabastan's usual smile worked its way onto his face. The first since the others were forced to drink that accursed potion. "What were you thinking, brother dear" he decided to only see his brother and not the thing he was turning into.
Looking between the other two Rodolphus said "How about I make us a nice wolf rug".
Insane laughter could be heard ringing around the room.
####SCENE BREAK####
"We can't just go up and say 'Come on Ron, let's talk about this weird time warp you've put yourself in and the people you've murdered'" Fred said sarcastically.
"Why not?" Lee asked with obvious amusement.
"Sure" George scoffed. "Then we'll ask 'By the way, Neville said you killed some folks, do you plan on killing any more or fancy that that bit is done with?'" he put on.
Lee rolled his eyes. "Well, we'll have to talk to them at some point" he told them. "You heard Neville" he went on seeing them share a look. "We talked to the lad for a reason. Ron is still your brother. Merlin, he's practically mine" Lee exclaimed. "Not to mention Harry".
"How can you be so nonchalant about all of this" George and Fred demanded.
"I'm not" Lee held his hands up. With a sigh, he ran his hand through his short dreadlocks. "But you heard what Neville said. I can't imagine any of them as killers" Lee said seriously. "But I think I can at least somewhat understand where they're coming from".
That forced the twins to pause. Their best friend did have a point.
However, their very beings wanted to fight and turn away from what their younger brother and his friends had become.
"Why don't we just talk to them. Talk to Ron. See what they have to say. What they plan. Neville only told us what they did and why" Lee pointed out. "Let's see where they plan to go from here" he shrugged. "Not much else we could do anyway" was added.
Again, he had a good point.
Besides ignoring the preteens, which they weren't in favor of doing despite everything, the only option left would be to talk to Ron.
"Well, come on" Fred surprised them, standing and going to the door.
"What, now?" Lee showed his surprise.
Fred looked at Lee and George. "Either of you have a better idea? Would you rather finish up your tea loves" he teased, making the other boys grumble and stand to follow him.
With an attempt of a calming breath, the twins and Lee set out to find Ron.
It didn't take long to find Ron.
Then again, the shouting could probably be heard from even outside of the castle.
Ron was outside of Lockhart's personal rooms, shouting through the door. He was red in the face, angry and drawing a crowd.
Luna and Neville were on either side of him.
"Don't ask for her again!" Ron raged at the door. "You don't look at her. You don't talk to her" he shouted.
"What happened" Lee asked as Fred and George shot glares at the crowd which decided not to try their luck against the twins and quickly dispersed.
Luna tried to calm Ron as Neville answered. "Lockhart sent a note to Vivian, summoning her for a private meeting" he said shaking his head.
"So then why is Ron so angry?" Fred and George didn't understand.
"He's still our teacher" Lee added.
"His thoughts" was all Neville said with a grimace.
The three older boys tried to understand. Not only could the kids read thoughts, but whatever they got from Lockhart seemed to upset Ron at a level that none of the boys had seen from him before.
"He thinks she looks like a woman he's…attracted too" Neville tried to explain, eyes sweeping for any listening portraits, easing himself, he gave a small sweep of his hand muffling their conversation.
"Wait, are you saying Lockhart wanted-" George didn't even know how to finish.
"At least the beginning of that" Neville nodded knowing what he was asking. "Even with his new look" Neville didn't go into. "Apparently, he's been having dreams. Dreams that involve Vivian. Now and older her" Neville said.
Seeing as they needed an explanation, Neville sighed and explained. Inside their minds making them jump before listening.
The three found themselves more disturbed over Lockhart becoming more and more interested in Vivian, rather than his brother cursing the man. Apparently, Lockhart realized that the feelings he got from the dream mystery woman were also feelings he had when looking at Vivian.
Feelings of anger, fear, but more prominently, feelings of lust. Lockhart decided he had to meet with the girl to try and figure out what was happening.
Even with his deterioration appearance, he had sent an elf delivered note to Vivian all but demanded her to his personal rooms.
Vivian told Ron, along with the unhappy Remus. Ron then decided this had to be nipped in the butt right away. Of course, his anger saw to him marching down and shouting at the man threw the door.
Well, he hadn't shouted at first. At first, he asked what the man's business with Ron's intended was.
Lockhart had tried to give some excuse through the door.
Ron had read his mind. Neville and Luna only got a whisper before Ron was shouting abuse at the man. He was beyond disgusted and angered by Lockhart. Even if the thoughts weren't fully formed, the seed had already been planted.
He wouldn't put such things past Lockhart. The man had done disgusting things to people before. The man's continued dreams about 'the woman' which began to mesh with Vivian, who he saw only a few times through the door when she'd pass, weighed on Lockhart's mind.
Luna did think it was odd that Lockhart had the habit of finding out where Vivian was and watching her through either a portrait or the crack of a door.
'It has to be the eyes' Luna guessed. That had to be what drew him in, making the subconscious connection in his mind.
Then again, she couldn't be a hundred percent sure. Lockhart had had that episode in class, the first of many, where he would get lost and simply stare at Vivian. Remus and Moody taking over had given Vivian a much needed break from the stares.
"Ron, there are too many witnesses about" Luna whispered to him, voice almost phantom like.
Though he wasn't happy, Ron knew she was right.
It was just the idea of this man, though he hated referring to Lockhart as such, trying to lure Vivian into any situation set his blood on fire.
"Ron, come on" Fred tried though besides tensing when his brother placed a hand on his shoulder, Ron didn't react.
"You can get to him later. When he goes out for hair gel" George tried. He said that bit louder, earning a noise of affront from behind the locked door.
"Hey" Lee turned. "Look whose here, now Ron can relax" he tried to smile.
Vivian quickly walked up and in front of Ron.
"Vivian, he-" Ron tried when she gently tried to pull him to move. He was cut off by his wife hugging him. Chest to chest with her hands under his arms bringing him into a deep hug. Ron couldn't help but return the action. He kissed her temple, speaking. "I'm sorry Love. I just-. What he thought-" he tried to explained.
"I know Ron. I'm not mad" she promised, holding him.
Before she could go on, a creak was heard. Everyone's eyes moved up. Lockhart, or who could be assumed was Lockhart, was staring out of a crack of the door. His blue gaze was frantic before fixating on Vivian.
"That's bloody creepy" the twins breathed.
"What happened to you?" Lee blurted.
Neville, Luna, and Vivian smirked. Ron would have, but he was busy at glaring at Lockhart.
The man was covered in shawls. They were wrapped around his head as if he were someone's small grandmother trying to keep warm.
Literally no part of him was exposed save for his still pristine face.
"I heard the commotion" he made light of Ron's shouts. "I see you finally arrived Miss Lupin. Please come inside" he dared.
Ron looked like he would actually explode.
"What do you want" Vivian still held onto Ron. She sounded beyond annoyed yet confused. Not to mention bored. It was obvious she wasn't fond of the man. She saw him unworthy of her time.
"You see" Lockhart quickly licked his lips. He adjusted the wrapping on his head. He looked like a parody of Quirrell and Trelawney all in one. "I have been thinking of taking on an apprentice. A pupil that is eager and willing to follow in my footsteps, as best as able" he tried to smile. "You are more than skilled in your classes. I believe you would make a wonderful apprentice. Though of course, there would need to be an interview and trial first" he went on.
Neville managed to speak before Vivian or Ron. "What happened to your hair?" he asked making Lockhart lose all the color in his face.
"What do you mean dear boy?" he tried to play off.
"Did you cut it?" Neville asked with innocence.
Now the twins and Lee really looked at Lockhart.
"No" Lockhart snarled before slamming his door shut. He was sure that his…affliction…was covered. However, he didn't want to risk it. 'Especially not in front of the girl' he thought self-consciously.
"Come on Ron" the twins tried to get him away from the door. "We need to talk to you" they finally caught his attention.
"What's wrong? Are you alright?" he asked obviously with worry.
Vivian rubbed his back. Ron was definitely on edge.
"Nothing" the twins said sharing a look with Lee. "We just want to talk. About everything" they tried to subtly hint.
After a beat of just looking at the three, Ron finally nodded.
"Do you want me to come?" Vivian asked and he squeezed her hand.
"Please" was all he said, and she gave him a gentle smile.
"Always" she promised. Ron's body language noticeable eased at that.
Getting nods, Neville and Luna went off to class.
Ron and Vivian led the twins and Lee to the ROR. The kids held in laughter at the look of amazement on the three pranksters faces.
"Is this about helping Harry pull off a prank so the marauders will think he's keeping up the tradition?" Vivian asked sending a wink at Ron who had on a lopsided smile. Seeing their looks she went on. "Well, ya know how he's related to them?" she got nods. "They're hoping he'll pull off a prank. I wouldn't put it past Dad to try something when he's here too, if Snuffles will help" she gave a soft chuckle.
The twins and Lee shared looks. What they would give to see their ideals in action! Even with one being their professor!
Then it hit them that one was their professor! They'd be able to learn from him.
"We could help Harry find a prank" the twins said.
"Absolutely. We could even help him get away with it. Or at least, no one will be able to prove he did it" Lee offered.
Ron shook his head catching onto what Vivian was doing.
Soon, the group settled into a room that looked a lot like the Gryffindor common room.
Vivian shook her head at all the red and gold. Not to mention the lions. "Gryffindors" she teased, taking a seat by Ron. Half the sofa turned Slytherin green with serpentine carvings.
"Snakes" Ron was heard muttering back with a teasing lilt.
Once everyone was situated, Vivian and Ron looked at the older boys. Vivian also looked at Ron, letting him take the lead on this. She blinked looking down. She could still see Ron and George sobbing over Fred's body.
Percy was crying in the corner as Molly looked broken with Arthur holding her. Ginny had cried quietly with Fleur as Bill and Charlie stood on either side of them.
Vivian, Harry and Hermione had watched. Sobbed and watched.
Ron was the only one George would let get close to Fred's body.
Then Harry had snuck off. He had gone to die to save everyone. Ron and Vivian had kissed, thinking they were going to die.
Hermione had gone out of her mind looking for Harry.
Neville had stood up to Voldemort with Luna by his side.
'It wasn't the end' Vivian thought with a deep inhale. She tried to focus on the here and now.
Finally, Fred spoke. "We talked to Neville" he began. He didn't know if the other boy had told them or not. "He told us… Well, he told us a lot" he shared a look with George and Lee.
George winced. He was also thinking of Neville describing his twin's death. Then the rest of his family fell. Lee hadn't been far off, trying to save Bill's family which he succeeded at, at the cost of his own life.
"It's true" Ron broke through George's thoughts. "All of it is true" he told them. "Like I told you" Ron looked beyond serious. "I can't lose you again. Any of you" his eyes went from the twins to Lee, the young man that had seemed to always be a prominent figure in his family.
Molly had even made him a Weasley sweater once, though it had gotten a bit scorched from a prank.
"I won't lose you" Ron stated.
"So" George finally spoke up as Lee, like Vivian, tried to leave the talking to the brothers unless needed. "Are you going to hurt people? Like that boy, that thing we saw the other day?" he asked.
Ron simply nodded.
"He was part of You-Know-Who?" Fred asked.
"You can call the tosser Riddle" Ron said, still annoyed over the sway the 'dead' man had. "That's his real name. I don't know what Neville told you about him, but he's shite" came Ron's opinion. Vivian hid a smile against his shoulder.
"We really only talked about you" Fred and George stated seeing Ron's brief smile.
Their twin talk used to run his head in circles. Now he knew he'd never tire of it.
"Though he didn't say" Fred went on.
"At least not directly" George added.
"What you were going to do now that you're here, for good" the twins finished together.
Ron shared a look with Vivian, silently communicating.
She gave a barely-there nod. Once more, Ron looked far graver than any of the other boys had ever seen him.
None of them liked it.
"What do you think about Greyback's murder?" came the sudden question. "Or about the attack on the Crouches and MacNair?" Ron put forth.
The boys all looked at each other, brows drawn. It was almost a random question. Almost innocent, yet not.
Lee's eyes widened as his gaze shot up. "Wait, you're the Death Knights!?" he all but yelled.
Neville had never officially given their name.
The twins looked ashen. Though the Prophet was no longer covering the Death Knights, all but pretending they didn't exist, what they had done had already gotten word out and spread like wildfire.
"I killed Greyback" Vivian said making Ron look at her.
"Viv, you don't have to" Ron protested, but she shook her head while taking his hand.
"They need to understand. They're your family" she insisted.
"You're my family. So they're your family too" Ron said quietly with conviction.
She smiled gently before facing the others. The pretty grin fell off.
Vivian went on to explain her life, including the newest information she had. She then explained, having gotten mental permission, what each and everyone one of the people they had so far attacked was guilty of. She needed the twins and Lee to understand the people the group was used to dealing with.
Who they had been dealing with for a long time.
Across from Vivian was not a dry eye to be seen.
The twins and Lee felt for her. For her and Harry, and Luna and Neville. Sirius and Remus. For all of them.
"Now Greyback is dead" Vivian brought them back to point. "However, there are more of them out there. More like Greyback and Lestrange. Like Voldemort" the thin girl easily said the feared name. "And if no one is willing to deal with them" Vivian started.
"Then we will" Ron finished.
The others looked around. This was beyond anything they had ever been faced with before. They thought they had learned the story from Neville, yet Vivian just finished putting the whole tale together!
It was upsetting, and terrifying and honestly exhausting.
Fred and George were supposed to be the older brothers. Sure, they messed with Ron frequently, but it was with love. Now…now what were they meant to do!?
"You don't have to do anything" Ron repeated what he said before. "Just keep being you. Stay alive" he told them.
Lee looked off to the side, trying to come to terms with everything.
George ran a hand through his hair.
"I want to help" Fred said, shocking the whole room.
"Fred-. You-. We-" Ron didn't know what to say.
"No Ron" Fred went on now standing. "You said you were looking out for your family. So am I. You're my family. If what you said is true, then so is Vivian" he went on. "You all are. I'm not going to leave you to do this on your own. I'm not leaving any of you" he turned to look at the teary-eyed George.
Being reminded of his twin's death felt like a break in the soul. George couldn't even properly speak for a moment.
Lee slowly nodded, standing on Fred's side with George following.
"I don't know what I can do, what we can do" Fred went on taking a deep breath and steeling his resolve. "But I want to help" he insisted.
Seeing the three boys become firm in the decision, Ron and Vivian shared a look.
This was unexpected. Now, they had to tell the others and see where they went from here.
####SCENE BREAK####
Lockhart was sure he was going out of his mind.
It was true that since his hair fell out his mind often strayed to the mystery woman from before the curse. He was sure that once he had her, in any sense of the word, then all of his woes would vanish.
Dumbledore would leave him alone. He could stop spouting the truth and best of all, his hair would grow back.
He just needed to find that damn woman. That would also lead to whoever helped her as he refused to believe a woman got the upper hand on him without a man's help.
'I find her then I find him. Then I can go back to my normal glamorous self, kill the man and keep the woman. I think I could obliviate her. At least enough to keep her chained up in the room. I think I'll keep this one' his twisted mind went on. 'Yes, millions of hearts will be broken when I settle down, but when you know then you must grasp life with both hands' Gilderoy tried on another wig.
Gilderoy was not a good man.
Having to hear all of his wrong doings and being punished with some loss of his physical beauty had not changed that.
It had not even made him begin to reflect on anything.
Not a chance. Gilderoy didn't care if he was bad. Not really. As long as he got what he wanted along with what he believed he deserved, then that was all that mattered.
However, he had gained another bad habit as of late.
While sketching and obsessing over the mystery woman, before he was confined to his rooms, he had locked eyes with Vivian Lupin of House of Black.
He remembered the first time it happened to. It was in his classroom in front of everyone.
Something about her reminded him so much of that beautiful woman.
'It must be the eyes. Has to be. Maybe the hair' Lockhart went on, hands once more going to synthetic hair as his portraits gave their opinions.
He had silenced a good few many.
Some because of the crying, some because of how they went on that he'd never look the same. He shut one up that tried to tell him to stay away from the Lupin girl.
Still, Lockhart had gotten into the habit of…watching Vivian. He watched her through paintings that had holes in them. Even the ones he had to make holes, upsetting the inhabitants of the portrait. He watched from cracked opened doors and even windows. He also had his portraits report to him.
It wasn't enough though.
It was almost as if the girl, not to mention the Weasley brat, always knew when he was there. He barely got to do more than watch her go about everyday life.
He needed more. He didn't know of what, but he knew he needed more.
With a groan like growl, he tossed the wig down before moving to the next.
He tried to pull off poses before seeming to deflate.
His bottom glossed lip wobbled as he fought back tears.
None of these wigs had the magic that his own hair had. Even after all but drowning the poor things in the wonderful hair care products of his own making.
Once more his mind strayed to Lupin. 'Vivian' he tested the name across his tongue.
It was like the more he was consumed with trying to find the mystery woman, the more he needed to see, to be around Vivian.
Lockhart didn't understand it, but he also didn't care to understand it. He just knew for his own sanity's sake, he at the very least had to get the girl alone to speak to her. Maybe then he could figure out this growing desire to be around her.
Even if he just had to speak to the girl, grill her then send her on her merry way none the wiser.
He really wished he knew how to read minds right now. Though, he had lied and told Snape he could, for some reason Lockhart got the impression the man didn't like him very much.
"I must find the right one" he told his paintings, trying on another wig. "Or find someone who can do an enchantment. Hmm, then then they'd know" he hummed. "But Dumbledore said I could bring back the dueling club" he went on. "All the whispers about Slytherins Chamber" he shivered.
That was just another rumor going on around Hogwarts. No one knew who spotted it, but it was reported that Peeves the poltergeist had heard someone mention it and told Dumbledore.
Some people even argued that the castle itself told Peeves, though most scoffed that idea off.
The idea of a castle talking! Magical or not, it was a bit farfetched.
At least to most.
Gilderoy heard some Ravenclaw girls going on about it. Well, they did until they began mocking some student named Lovegood. Before he could get anymore, the girls had all fallen and been rolled up in a carpet, set up against the wall.
It was a freak accident.
Lockhart hadn't revealed himself. He was sure Filch would find and sort them out. Eventually.
'Cursed to merely watch from the shadows' Lockhart bemoaned his current fate.
He should have been out and about with his public. Bedazzling the fan groups while soaking up the obvious worship aimed his way.
Instead, until he could fix his current look, he had to avoid people at all costs. He was still spouting the truth, but his looks far outweighed any of that to Gilderoy.
"And that toad's on the loose too" Lockhart thought before freezing. He spun dramatically to the many painted hims. "Do you think she did this to me!?" he suddenly asked as it seemed everything clicked into place. "Merlin, it must have been her!" he exclaimed.
He saw his favorite portrait trying to speak. It was back from its spying.
"Yes, what" he asked walking over to his glorious self.
"The girl, Vivian" the smaller him cried in excitement. "She's good at potions. Snape was even talking about her to McGonagall. It was almost like he was praising her. Well, for Snape" mini Gilderoy went on.
"Really" Lockhart rubbed his chiseled chin.
"They said more but apparently he was upset about something about Minerva took them to a more private setting" the painting pouted.
Gilderoy waved that away. "That could be the key" he told the room. "If she's good at potions, I could take her on. Make her my assistant of sorts" he went on. "Then, she could grow my hair back and I'd have her close" he cheered.
Just then, a note was slipped under the door by an elf.
Quickly, Gilderoy ripped it open. His smile brightened significantly.
One painting, only one, that was painted in a library, looked on disapprovingly.
The books around him had eventually caught his interest. Over time, he found himself falling further and further away from the man he was made to emulate.
The man that disgusted him as more years wore on.
This painting could never speak. He hadn't been allowed to for a long time. Nor had he been able to leave his frame.
However, since coming to Hogwarts added with Lockhart's panic, the blonde found he could slowly but surely start making his way out of his frame.
He couldn't speak still, but that didn't matter.
A new determination came over him. If he was going to exist, then he would have a purpose. He would try to do what Lockhart only claimed to do.
He would help people.
The first person? Vivian Lupin.
The painting began to double his efforts to leave his portrait in order to convey a much-needed warning.
None of the other Lockharts or Gilderoy himself paid attention. The letter was from Dumbledore. He gave Gilderoy the keys to a classroom for the dueling club.
Though he offered Professor Flitwick to help run it given the man's title of world champion. A title he was still in possession of.
Gilderoy scoffed, but wouldn't let that stop him.
He had to be adored.
Albus thought that not only would this bring Gilderoy out of his rooms, giving the staff a chance to find out what happened, but he would be safe since he'd be in such a large group. Even if Dumbledore thought Lockhart should be teaching rather than running a club, he thought perhaps it was best for Gilderoy at the moment.
Minerva, and though he'd loath to admit it Severus, along with most of the staff thought Remus and Moody were doing a splendid job anyhow. Remus seemed to be born to teach which showed as the students loved him. Moody brought his own severe experience to the table.
"I think I have an idea, gentlemen" Gilderoy smiled.
Besides Vivian's attitude to the man, he knew he had to speak to her.
Watching her through a mirror under a classroom door just didn't have the same effect as face to face. He was sure she'd jump for joy being his assistant. She may have acted frosty towards him, but he was sure it was just that, an act.
'Probably for Weasley's benefit. Poor sod doesn't even know what to do with such a beauty' he mentally insulted Ron.
He penned Vivian, then Albus. He made sure Albus knew that not only having Vivian as his assistant would be detrimental to his own health, and her magical growth, obviously, but that it would help him with the club and classes when he was well enough to take them back over.
Albus quickly sent a reply that he would inform Vivian of her duties later.
Later Lockhart would be astonished that Ron dare challenge him. Not to mention the fear that red-head could produce.
He didn't know that Albus himself would get a visit from the red head that would leave the old man wishing for one of Molly's howlers.
####SCENE BREAK####
In their Death Knight disguises, the children and Remus met up with Sirius.
He had prepared the hall for not only Dudley, but for a woman Hermione mentioned. She said she'd explain everything after the night's activities.
"Do they want to join?" Harry asked Ron about the twins and Lee.
He was surprised as well.
"I don't know. They don't know. I just think if you could come talk to them tomorrow, maybe give them a simple task? It would really help" Ron asked of his leader and best mate.
"'Course" Harry easily agreed. "We'll think of something. Right now let's meet with the dementors" he explained. "I'll go with Hermione and Ron. Vivian, you and Sirius lead the mission tonight" he told them. "Then we'll get the last ingredients for Sirius and Remus' upcoming ceremony".
Neville patted both men's shoulders.
Soon, they'll be full blown Death Knights.
Remus and Sirius stood taller. There was an odd pride running through them both.
"Tonight we're going after Goyle and Crabbe's fathers" Harry told the group who was now in a field right outside of Hogwarts.
Albus was on Umbridge Search Party duty.
No one would be looking for them, though a charm was put here and there just to be sure. Harry was still working out who mentioned the chamber to Peeves. That beyond annoyed him, not knowing.
"Just like their sons', they're Malfoy Seniors lackeys. Take them down and you at least take away some of his power, or at least money and brute work" he shot a side look at Vivian.
She shot him one back. "It's fine Harry" she promised. "My father's here. Not the walking blonde menace" she countered.
Remus smiled, his hand resting on her shoulder.
"You know I'm your godmother, don't you" Sirius asked making them look at him. "What, it was funny at the time" he gently touched her cheek.
Vivian smiled, "I'm glad. You fit the role" she joked making him chuckle.
"Though" now Sirius and Remus shared that familiar mischevious look. "Remus and I were talking" he explained. "You know you and Harry and my heirs" he told them.
"And you're mine" Remus told her. Vivian fought a bright smile. She knew some day she'd be sharing that title with Teddy.
"But" the men said at once before Remus nodded for Sirius to go on. "Technically, you're the Malfoy heir" he handed her a letter. "Narcissa wrote to me and Remus" he told them. "She said you were never officially taken out of the house. You're the heir. She's given you permission to take back compensation and do what you see fit with it" he dropped.
"Like what we're hoping Bones will be able to push through for Sirius" Remus told them. "The official trial is next week. Yes, we've gotten you all passes to be there" he calmed the children.
Sirius smiled widely at all of the happy voices saying his name. Harry beamed up at him making his heart feel like the sun.
That doubled when Vivian gave him a brief hug.
As Harry, Hermione, and Ron received best wishes and be carefuls, Remus then turned to Sirius.
"For the first time in a long time I can say life is good. Even with this" he whispered to his best friend.
Knowing what he meant, Sirius had to nod back in totally agreement.
With that, everyone else followed Vivian and Sirius as they went to the location given to them.
The golden trio didn't have long to wait for the dementors. They were eager to prove their worth to Harry. Ezekiel floated forward with a bow. Jedediah and Rachel were quick to follow. The others bowed, though held back some as the three higher ups floated towards their Master, their Mistress and their general.
The dementors could feel who the Death Knights were and their role as soon as meeting them.
'Good' Harry spoke mentally. 'Then you will recognize our two newest members' he told them. Sirius and Remus flashed through their minds which was sent to every dementor. Harry growled at the hunger he felt from some of them.
The recognized Sirius. He had been a favorite.
'If you touch him' Hermione spoke with brown eyes boring into each and every soulless eye socket possible. 'Then we'll see if any of my spell work on dementors is as potent as I think they may be'.
The dementors cowered while the higher ups tried to bow, conveying their submission to the Master and Mistress.
No one would touch Sirius or Remus. None of the dementors that had haunted Sirius before would even dare to look in his general direction going forward unless to aid him.
'Now, you will have a mission tonight' Harry began walking back and forth. 'A feast' he promised.
'Yes, Master' Ezekiel's wispy voice rang through the three humans' minds. 'Let us prove to you that this glutinous life has not rendered us useless and unrepairable' he implored.
'That is going to be decided tonight. Isn't it?' Harry didn't bend. 'We found names, names of people we wish you to visit' Harry pulled out the list.
He had gotten even more names when going through Griphook's things.
The goblin was dead, the goblin nation felt their honor had been restored and their relationship with the Master of Death was as allies. Something Harry fully agreed on. The goblin race shouldn't be brought down by one traitor.
He almost smiled, remembering Griphook trying to fight him. Griphook thought he could call for the Sword of Gryffindor, which Harry had brought as bait. The goblin had thought that the goblin made steel would return to him, thinking he owned it given it was goblin made.
The sword had not answered his call.
However, Luna and Vivian's pet chimera had. Romulus was in much better health than when first found. He was keeping those at the Manor safe.
Sirius found it quite cool to have the spectacular beast around. Especially since it usually acted like a large house cat.
Griphook had not shared the sentiments.
Of course, they weren't keeping the chimera to use as a weapon. They had fully planned on either releasing it into the wild when it was healed or even having Hagrid look over it.
However, the chimera had wanted to stay. It had made the fact quite clear as Sirius and Remus took turns bottle feeding him to get his strength up.
So, the Death Knights had an unexpected mascot while the people behind the Death Knights got a group pet.
Romulus simply happened to run down, hearing Harry's argument and the goblin go to shout at Harry. That led to Romulus defending and protecting Harry.
Harry thought it was extremely cute, bloody walls and all.
Knowing the memory was one to relish at another time, Harry continued.
"I would also like you Ezekiel" he said as Hermione and Ron passed out names and locations making sure the dementors knew their orders.
They were only to go after those on the list. Not whole families or people nearby, nor servants or pets.
Only the names. That would show that he was still as efficient as ever. That his original purpose and creation was not lost.
"Rita Skeeter. She started printing lies about me. The Prophet denies me, but soon they will be unable" he announced. "I want her to show the proper respect when she addresses us" he told Ezekiel.
Fear was something Ezekiel had always been gifted with. Perhaps it was due to the nature of his horrific death which had brought him to being a dementor? He did not know.
However, he understood the assignment.
With another bow, the dementors watched as the Master and others took off.
They had a party to catch up to.
Goyle and Crabbe were easy to find.
They were drinking in a hole in the wall little place called the Titty Twister.
It was a nightclub that was owned by vampires. Though, it wasn't one of the high-class establishments that most vampires frequented. This was definitely one where if there was a smudge on your glass, you kept your mouth closed.
However, the two Death Eaters were such bad company, they creeped out and pissed off even the weirdos of the undead. The Death Eaters were worse than the lowest in the vampire community, which said a bit. That lot usually could take and handle anything.
Not with Crabbe and Goyle. Both men were their own brand of awful.
They were thrown out.
So, they were shouting, almost singing, abuse back and forth as they swayed down the street. No one came out to look at them. No one wanted to be noticed or bare witness to anything.
The two men didn't know that they had had an audience to their unceremonious exit of the bar.
"Damn blood suckers" Goyle burped, rubbing his five o'clock shadow as Crabbe tried to adjust his belt under his extended gut. "Should have staked the lot of 'em" Goyle went on.
"I think that bitch waitress took my money pouch" Crabbe blindly accused. "Knew there was a reason she wouldn't let me grab her tits. She had money in them. My money" he went on.
Both stumbled, grumbling and growling when they ran into one another or the side of a streetlamp or wall.
The large group watched from the shadows. Hidden up like beautiful, covered gargoyles watching the mortals below.
'It's almost anticlimactic, finding them like this and what not' Ron couldn't help but think to the others.
'I suppose I should be happy it will be so easy' Neville agreed. 'But it's almost boring'.
'Boring or not' Hermione said, 'We should get it over with'.
'Though it is boring' Sirius had to agree.
'Mistress is right' Remus said, using the name even in his mind. 'We should do this now. We have bigger enemies that I'm sure will put us all through our paces' he told them.
'I suppose I can do it' Luna mentioned, getting the go ahead from Sirius. 'Cobra Lily, would you like to help?' Luna offered.
'Let's go Billywig' Vivian nodded and the two jumped from the third-floor landing they had been crouched on.
They glided down with arms outstretched and cloaked arms almost giving bat or butterfly like effects.
Like flying came so easily for them. One would think that as the two girls landed with barely a crunch of the graveled street. The men in front of them didn't even notice.
'Do we need other names?' Sirius suddenly asked, though his eyes stayed on the girls.
'You think we shouldn't use Moony or Padfoot?' Remus asked.
'I mean, those are…not for this' Sirius tried to explain.
'I think you're right' Harry said as some of the others nodded. 'Moony and Padfoot are not only for the marauders and the like, but they're your personal nicknames. What if we called you that in public and someone made the connection. No, they're too personal. They mean too much' Harry didn't see the kind eyes the men quickly shot him before each looking back down at the scene before them.
'We'll come up with something. Once you get some more fighting under your belt and what not. You find the name comes easy' Ron teased them. The men had fought plenty, in the first war and definitely now.
'I'm sure it was the same for your other nicknames' Neville added.
'Oh, look' Hermione brought attention back to the current task.
Linking arms, Luna and Vivian easily caught up with their pray. It made for a slightly humorous look. They did give off the appearance of dementors, almost at least. There was something off about them. Dangerous and unnatural to the point that anyone with senses would try to avoid them.
Still, no laugh left any of the watchers.
Though some humor could be found, danger still rolled off the girls in waves.
Setting out a sensor, Harry had to give a half grin.
Anyone who had been possibly watching quickly shut their doors and windows. The image of the dementor like figures following the two clueless men saw to them shutting up lest they gain the unknown figures attention.
Not something anyone wanted.
Hearing the Death Knight title run through some people's head, even as they hurried to all but hide under their beds, Harry had to wonder over people's fear.
They assumed that the figures were part of the Death Knights.
However, they had no way of knowing. Though no one knew about the illusion, the figures just looked, for the moment, like tall figures in cloaks that hid everything about them. Even their illusioned skeleton like appearances weren't showing.
'Sheep. They're all sheep' Harry thought, remembering something someone close to him had once called the people of the magical world.
'I've invited her you know' Hermione surprised him with a private mental link. 'Vivian found her with Luna. She accepted, once we gave her a taste of what we know' she teased. She had to trap a laugh in her throat, not wanting to ruin Vivian and Luna's pursuit.
The laughter was getting easier to control. Then again, she had just put a silencing spell on herself. If she laughed for too long, it would kick in. She just didn't want to come off as insane. Not to everyone at Hogwarts at least.
That did make Harry happy. Their family was growing.
Luna and Vivian separated going on either side of the men.
"Wha-? Who the bloody hell" Crabbe went to slur.
"If you're a lad, you best get off me. Unless you're a hooker and a good looking one at that" Goyle laughed so hard he wheezed.
"Eh, hookers huh?" Crabbe perked up, not paying attention that neither of the opposing figures had spoken. "I don't care if you're ugly, keep the cape on but give us a squeeze" he tried to reach out for where breasts would be if one were to have them.
"A squeeze" Vivian spoke, tone going up happily. It was as if she found the wording most pleasing.
Both men, even in their drunken states, caught the unnatural undertone pitches in the voice. One went for his wand as the other tried to push Luna off his side.
Now Hermione laughed. It was loud and proud.
That scared Goyle and Crabbe even further. Anger and fear were alive in them as their nerves and drunken brains tried to warn them of the obvious danger.
Neville wandlessly went to summon their wands, flicking his wrist so they'd land in the rive under the bridge they were now on.
"Hey!"
"Do you know who I am!?" came shouts from the men.
"I do" Luna agreed. "And that's why we're going to give you a squeeze" the frightening voice had a light tone to it.
Before either man could move, the girls put them in a body lock. Then, it was as if Vivian and Luna were attempting to hug one another but these huge brute of men were between them.
Remus felt his brows go up as he realized what was happening.
"Oh" Sirius hummed out loud. 'Squeeze, I get it. Clever' he applauded the girls.
Goyle and Crabbe were absolutely helpless, unable to fight or even shout as the beings on either side of them showed an ungodly amount of strength.
Bones began to crack as both men felt their noses bleed.
Goyle could have sworn his eye was going to pop out of the socket.
Luna and Vivian put their magic into their muscles as they squeezed hard, working towards one another harder.
They crushed the two grown men between them.
With an almost crack that could have been heard down in Surrey, Vivian and Luna finally hugged.
Hermione laughed louder, more like cackled now which Sirius couldn't help but join in.
Harry, Remus, Ron and Neville all smirked as the group soon moved to join their other members.
"I do love hugging you Cobra Lily" Luna said happy to her friend.
"And I you Billywig, and I you" Vivian promised.
With a hidden smile and glowing eyes, the two finally separated.
They were covered in some blood; they did crush the men after all until they could hug. That meant going through some of the bodies. However, it wasn't an insane amount of blood.
They knew what a lot of blood looked like. This was barely anything.
Crabbe was dead. His dark beady eyes with a frozen look of horror were aimed at the sky, though could not see.
Goyle on the other hand didn't seem totally gone yet.
He gave an almighty wheeze making everyone look at him.
"Think he'll die soon?" Ron had to ask, looking at Hermione.
"I would be surprised if he didn't" she said though Remus took over.
"Even if he doesn't, he's not going to be able to walk soon" Remus did a scan with his wand. "No healer could handle this" he told them.
"Then we'll leave him" Harry said. That had Vivian and Luna leave the man alive and further untouched. Harry crouched down. "I am the Master of Death, Goyle" he told him pleasantly. "I suggest that when the press ask you about what happened that you tell them the truth. I punished you for your willing crimes as a Death Eater".
"You cant'-' Goyle tried to speak. He winced as blood leaked out of the corner of his mouth.
"Oh, save your strength" Harry told him. "You'll need it" came the promise. "We're only leaving you for now. This way you can give a message to all your little Death Nibbler friends" he promised. "We're coming after them and your false Lord of a master" he whispered. "We'll come back for you later. If you tell the truth to the press, I'll make it quick. If not" Harry tsked again. "I'll make sure you feel everything, even if I have to put you back together just to tear you apart myself".
Harry stood as the others formed a circle around Goyle. Crabbe was pushed to the side.
"See you later" Hermione laughed more as they all began to shadow away.
"Say hi to your son for me" Vivian's altered voice added before she was up in the air.
Ron looked at Neville and Sirius, the last ones on the ground. "Still think it was anticlimactic" he told them before calling out.
With more dark chuckles, the Death Knights were gone. Goyle sat as a motionless heap until finally someone decided to call the aurors for him. Anonymously of course.
####SCENE BREAK####
"Do you like pina coladas. And something, something the rain" Sirius sang under his breath. He was making his way to the front door.
Hermione had hired someone from their past, or future which Sirius kept pointing out to lightly get on the nerves and tease the Brightest Witch of Her Age.
They were hiring a woman who came to be close to them. One of the Death Knights' higher ups. Though, she hadn't become a Knight herself, she had yet to go through the ceremony. The one that Remus and Sirius were due to go through soon.
Hermione and Vivian were both hoping that Alexandra would finish this time and become just as close as before. She had been great to the teens. One of the few adults that actually listened when needed it. And that was before Harry took over.
Thankfully, they had gotten her from America much sooner this time.
Vivian and Hermione had written the letter. After much deliberation with the others, it was decided that she would eventually be told the truth. Alex could be trusted, that was a fact none of them thought would be any different this time around. She knew how cruel this world could be and that the truth, along with happiness, could be found in the most unusual and unexpected of places.
They made sure the letter was just enticing enough. Who could refuse speaking to mystery people who knew about your past, not to mention your present and possible future? People who wanted your help to shape the world into a better place?
Not to mention, they had stated that Sirius Black would be there and could use some help. Once Alex knew of his innocence, along with a strategically placed photo of the handsome man thanks to the plotting Vivian, Alex had been unable to turn the strange offer down.
Hermione and Vivian might have also been up to some secret matchmaking. Hermione told Sirius that the person he was going to meet might just end up being more to him than he ever imagined. That she always felt like the pair would have gotten on famously if only they had had the fortunate chance to meet.
It was almost like they were meant to meet, but his death had gotten in the way. Sirius thought Hermione, and the others who agreed, were being a bit dramatic. Hermione had worried him when she simply smiled that sweet little prim smile.
Sirius opened the door with a handsome, easy grin. He was once more pleased over not having to wear a disguise presently. Whoever had rung the bell had to be the mystery person everyone spoke of as no one uninvited could get to the Manor, let alone ring the bell.
Vivian had told him not to answer in disguise, and he did so trusting her.
Registering who was before him, Sirius looked stumped as he came face to face with the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
"Hi, I'm Alex Debree. You must be Sirius Black" came a bright smile, sultry voice which happened to be connected to the deep green eyes locked with Sirius' grey.
"Ahuh" Sirius nodded, taking the beauty in.
That earned a wider smile, long dark red hair pushed over her shoulder. Sirius took in her piercings and darker style. A style he couldn't help but think matched pretty well to his. Even with the slightly extended top canines.
Sirius suddenly realized that Hermione Granger actually was the Brightest Witch of His Age.
A/N: What do you think? Yes, I know this is the first time I'm mentioning an Alex. I've actually had her planned for a little while. However, I wanted the story to be further along before bringing her up, like now. I'll explain her going on. Obviously an OC. Had to find someone for Sirius. He's too fine to be on his own for long. I know the twins knew some stuff from before, Neville gave them a pretty good picture, however, I didn't think Neville would mention Vivian's night of turning and the like in detail. That would be up to her, though they gave her permission to speak for them. The same with Harry's abuse and stuff. If that makes sense. Trying to mix the serious stuff with a little fun, they are still kids with a second chance after all. As usual; review, ask, or suggest if you'd like. Stay safe, see you next time.
