Chapter Nine Gaius

''Quick! Quick! Quick!'' she said the sound it Venus

''you can't think you glad i'am to see you again you two dears old thing!'' Venus as tucked arm affectionately into Lily and Jesus's and they walked off together.

Lily and Jesus was very glad to find in such a pleasant temben and thought to self that perhaps it was only the pepper that had made so savage when they met in the kitchen

''when we a mistress'' she said to herself

''i won't have any pepper in my kitchen at all soup does very well without-maybe it's always pepper that make people hot tempered''

Lily and Jesus went on very much pleased at having found out a new kind of rule

''and vinegar that make them sour-and camomile that make butter-and-and barley-suger and such things that make children sweet-tempered we only wish people knew that then they wouldn't be so stingy about it you know''

Lily and Jesus had quite forgotten Venus by this time and was a little startled when head her voice close to ear

''you thinking about my dear children and that makes you forget to talk i can't tell you just now what the moral of that but i shall remember it in a but!''

''perhaps it hasn't one'' Lily and Jesus ventured to remark

''tut! tut children!'' said Venus

''why'' Lily life would be very dull

''if it didn't off your head'' said Venus and secondly because Lily and Jesus was exactly the right height to rest her chin upon Lily and Jesus's shoulder and it was an uncomfortably sharp chin however did not like to be rude

so she bore it as well as Lily and Jesus could ''the game's going on rather better now'' she said by way of keeping up the conversation a little''

''tis so'' said Venus and the moral of that is ''oh tis love that makes the world go round! the more there is of yours or you could say favours the brave''

''i could and we will'' thought Lily to herself

''that's nothing to what i could say if i chose'' Venus replied

in a pleased tore ''Oh a fine day your majesty!'' Venus began in a low weak voice

''Now i give you fair warning'' Juno stamping on the ground as she spoke ''either you or your head must be Oooooooofffffffff''

Venus took her choice and was gone

in a moment ''now my dears children we can finish our game'' Juno said to Lily and Jesus

Lily and Jesus was too much frightened to say a word but slowly followed her back to the croquet ground the other guests had taken advantage of Juno's adsence and resting in the shade now ever the moment they saw her they hurried back to the game.

''our game before you two leave'' Juno said a finish game

Juno merely remarking that a moment's delay would cost them their lives lives

''they want us to do things we don't do want to do'' said Lily to say

''you two have to know the password'' said Juno asked Lily and Jesus to password

"we don't know it" said Lily

"guess" said Juno

"Jericho" said Jesus

"guess-again" said Juno

"lion and lamb" said Lily almost but not quite "it honeycomb"

"can you write that word down" said Juno

"yes said Lily "the lamb of god"

"well...i thouth not" said Juno "come come this won't do everyone play"

Juno falled down in grass and she was very angry "Off With Their Head! Off With Their Head! Off With Everyone's Head!"

So Lily and Jesus walk away into roman villa croquet game and the garden

"this isn't such a lovely garden all now where have we got to" said Lily

"it time to save our one man my dear sister" Jesus said

"look Jesus temple of god" said Lily to found temple of god

"let go see" said Jesus smiled

Then walk round in temple of god just like temple of jerusalem

just then a stranger a said "Hello who are you"

"Lily" said Lily

"Lily" a stranger said

"and i'm Jesus Jesus Of Nazareth and who are you" said Jesus ask a stranger

"i'm Julius of the roman gods" said Julius a name of roman

"i thought you were a roman empire" said Lily ask Julius questions

"i am! that makes me more !" said Julius

"is there a way out this maze Julius" said Jesus

"let ask Gaius he my friend" he said to ask friend they had not gone for

before saw Gaius in the distance sitting sad and lonely on a little ledge of rock and as they came nearen Lily and Jesus could near him signing as if his neart would break they pited him deeply.

"What is his sorrow" she asked Julius

and Julius answered very nearly in the same words as before

"it's all his faney that he hasnt got no sorrow you know come on!"

so they went up to Gaius who looked at them with large eyes full tears but said nothing

"Gaius tell this young girl and young man about yourself" said Juilus

"i'll tell it her and him!" said Gaius in a deep hollow tone "sit down both of you and don't speak a word till i've finish"

"er no thanks i've heard it before" said Julius

"Sit down said Gaius asked

"Ok! ok i sit down" said Julius

so they sat down and nobody spoke for some minutes Lily thought to herself

"we don't see how he can even finish if he doesn't begin!"

but she waited patiently

"Once" said Gaius at last "i was a real young man there words of god on earth was broken only by roman soliders"

"empire!"

from Julius and the constart heavy sobbing of Gaius

Lily and Jesus was very nearly getting up and saying "thank you sir for your intersting story"

but could help thinking there must be more to come so sat still and said nothting

"when i was boy" Gaius went on at last more calmly though still sobbing a little now

"and then i was kidnap by the roman soldiers when to city of rome and sold as a slave-"

"why did sold as you slave" Jesus asked

"he called me slave became he taught us" said Gaius angrily "really you are dull!"

"you ought to be ashamed of youself for asking such a simple question" added Julius

and then they both sat silent and looked at poor Lily and Jesus who felt ready to sink into the earth at last Julilus said

"Gaius drive on old fellow! don't be all day about it!" and he these words

"yes i was work at household though you two mayn't believe it-"

"we believe you said we didn't!" interrupted Lily

"you two didn't said Gaius

"hold you slave!" added Julius

before Lily and Jesus could speak again Gaius went on

"i had the best of educations-in fact i was to household every day-"

"we been to our family too" said Jesus "you needn't be so proud as all that"

"with extras" asked Gaius a little arxiously

"yes" said Lily "we learned jewish and music"

"and washing" said Gaius

"certainy too" said Lily and Jesus indighantly

"an then yours wasn't a really good" said Gaius in atone of great relief "now at ours they had at the end of earth jewish music and washing-extra"

"you couldn't have wanted at mush" said Lily "living at the bottom of the sea!"

"i couldn't afford to learn it" said Gaius "with a sigh i only took the regular course"

"what was that" inauired Jesus

"reeling and writhing of course to begin with" Gaius replied "and then the different breahes of jerusalem-britain a great britain greece and rome"

"we had of jerusalem" Jesus ventured to say "what is it"

Julius lifted up both its paws in surprise" what never head of rome! it exclaimed you know what to beautify is i suppose"

"yes" said Lily doubtfutify "it means-to-make-anything-prettier"

well then" Julius went on "if you don't know what to rome is you are a lamb"

"well there was mystery!" Gaius replied counting off the subhjects on his "fappers-mystery ancient and modern with seaography the drawing-master was an old conger-eel that used to come once a week he taught us drawling stretcning and fainting in coils"

"what was that like" said Lily

"well i can't show it you myself" Gaius said

"i'm too stiff and Julius never learnt it"

"hadn't time" said Julius

"i went to the master" thought he was an old crab he was

"i never went to him" Gaius said with a sigh

he taught laughing and grief they used to say

"so he did so he did" said Julius signing in turn

and both creatures nid their faces in their paws and

"how many hours a day did you do lessons" said Jesus in a hurry to change the subjest

"ten hours the first day" said Gaius "nine the next and so on"

"what a curious plan!" exclaimed Lily

"that's the reason they're called lessons" Julius remarked

because they lesson from day to day this was quite a new idea to Lily and Jesus and thought it over a little before made next remark

"then the eleventh day must have been a heaven of course it was" said Gaius

"and how did you manage on the twelfth" Lily went on eagerly

"that enough about lessons" Julius interrupted in a very decided tone "tell something about the game now."
