Surge would never talk about her nightmares, of course she wouldn't, why would she? There was no reason to. Absolutely none. Zero reason to ever even think of doing it. So she didn't and that was that. Most nightmares would consist of something Dr. Starline related, that was the only common thread. Usually it was directed towards her, but last night, it was towards Kit. You would think she would be happy it wasn't her. Yet to Surge's surprise, she absolutely hated seeing the fennec traumatized. She cried and cried and cried and cried. Until it stopped, then all she remembers is waking up and seeing Kit in her arms.
She has cried before in dream and she's seen Kit in her arms more times than she could count, yet she wanted to squeeze him and make sure he was okay. Yet somehow she didn't. Surge layed there with Kit in her arms, wanting to cry, wanting to hold him, wanting to make sure he was okay, wanting to make sure that Starline wouldn't come for them. So much so, overwhelmed her. But she laid there. For the longest time. Her mind, overstimulated with thought and needs. That was all, and that sucked, a lot. So when she finally got out of bed, she went to the bathroom and cried to herself. A lot, so much. While she knew why it was happening, it didn't feel like it was her doing it, like she was another person. That was it, that was all she did.
"Hey Drippy" Kit's ears perk up.
"What should we do today?"
"…What did you want to do?" This is going to be harder than she thought.
"Nope, that's not how it's going to go this time, you decide"
Kit thinks, hard. Really hard, about what he wants. For a long time too, a really long time. Surge goes from neutral to annoyance to concern. Kit thinks hard, with what Surge assumes is all his brain power, yet he can't come up with anything. Which, again, surprisingly, Surge is concerned about.
"Okay, obviously this isn't going to work" Surge says and Kit stops thinking and breathes a sigh of relief.
"Alright… what do you like?"
"Helping you and Water."
"Alright, something with water, oh! I got it!" Surge says and goes to the fridge, gets a jug of water (out of many that Kit stockpiled) and pours it onto Kit. Surge smiles, and then Kit smiles and then he starts to laugh.
"How was that?" Surge asks
"Surprisingly refreshing." Kit says and laughs harder, Surge smiles, at least she made the kid happy, but eventually it stops and they're back to square one.
"Alright, water, water, water" Surge thinks for a long time
"We could go to the beach?" Kit suggests, Surge looks surprised at him then smiles. A big smile.
"Atta boy! I knew you could come up with an idea, a beach day!… wait do we own swim suits… do we even know how to swim?" Surge questions, and Kit shrugs.
"Huh… Well I guess that's what we have to figure out!" Surge takes Kit by the hand and drags him to the beach.
It's empty, yet pleasant. Neither of them know exactly how to swim, yet Kit's hydropack gives them any boost or need to get out. They surprisingly have a good time. At the end, they mainly stay at the shallow end. Letting the same waves hit them. Kit is obviously enjoying himself more than Surge is enjoying herself. But she still likes it, and she's happy for Kit, who really likes it. The Kid deserves it. She enjoys it enough too, but mainly for Kit.
"So what was that about?" Kit innocently asks as he and Surge walk back to their home.
"What?"
"Asking about what I want?"
"It… was nothing. Got bored, that's it"
"Was your nightmare last night about me?" Surge stops dead in her tracks, panic spreads on Kit's face. Surge notices this and takes a breath out to calm herself. She doesn't want to scare the kid. She really doesn't. She doesn't want to be his fear.
"Yes, please don't be afraid of me, like that stupid platypus" Surge says, Kit nods and the two walk back home in silence for the rest of the walk. They don't want to say anything, despite how suffocating the silence seems to be. Both of them decide it's better off that way.
Eventually after a walk home, the two sit down and get ready for sleep. They don't talk a single bit. Both of them feel the silence is better than anything they could mention. So they stay like that, silent. With no sounds in their house besides the sounds that come from whatever the two decide to do.
"I'm sorry." Kit says while he and Surge brush their teeth. Surge, again, stops in her tracks. Letting the scrubbing movement with her toothbrush go numb.
"It's fine Drippy" Surge says as calmly as she can, she really doesn't want to deal with this. The last thing she wants to do is open up closed wounds again.
"I didn't know what to do."
"It's fine Kit, all I want is for you not to be scared of me, or you see yourself as my inferior. I don't want to be like him. I can only hope that he's dead, and that he can't hurt either of us ever again. That's all I want, okay?"
"…Did you just call me Kit?"
"That's your name, isn't it?"
Kit smiles and hugs Surge, the Tenrec rolls her eyes before hugging him back. Slightly tighter than he does. Even though she'll never admit it and Kit enjoys it too much to say anything about it. The two finish doing their nightly chores then go to bed. Surge doesn't have a nightmare at night. She only has happy dreams, yet, Kit is still there when she wakes up and she couldn't be happier to see him. She makes sure to Hug him and wake him up before she gets out of bed to start another day.
