Sup y'all, I'm back once again for chapter 9 in just a little bit under a month, not good, but standard for me. I'm happy to have finally been able to get Caiatl in the story, now things can perhaps get moving (whenever I decide to write and upload) I hope this chapter is enjoyable to read!
Calus and Collector looked at each other, "Can you do this for me? Enlarge the portal?" The desirous emperor asked.
"I…don't know how to do that. I don't even know if I can do that!" Collector paused for a moment, "Why would you need a bigger portal anyway? You already brought your other friends here."
"My Loyalists are only the start of something great, the catalyst to my grand plan. There is something greater that needs to be realized." Calus affirmed. "I need my Leviathan. If I am to finish my work here, then its majesty must be revealed to the people of this realm."
Collector's shadow floated over to a nearby tree, "But Emperor Belos promised I'd be free on the Day of Unity. I'm not too sure what it is you want to do, but if it interferes with me getting out of this shadow form, then I can't help you with it."
Calus let out a friendly laugh, "I promise you, my friend. My vision will be far from meddlesome for you."
"You promise?"
Calus extended both his hands out, "I promise a million times over, Collector. Now tell me, if you can't expand the portal, then who can?"
"Well, there's nothing, or nobody who can help with that. All the Titan blood in the Demon Realm is gone! And ya can't open or enlarge a portal without it, friend. I can't think of any other way for you to bring your 'Leviathan' through the portal."
"An unfortunate circumstance." Calus groaned, "Collector. You mentioned a 'Day of Unity'. I have only heard murmurs of such an event. What is it?"
"It's…a day where all the witches come together to go to 'utopia'. In reality, Belos plans to drain all the witches and demons of their magic, it's a draining spell, really."
Calus's eyes lit up, "A draining spell? Could one harness the power once it has been drained?"
The Collector placed a hand on his chin, "I've…never thought of that. There's a possibility, but I wouldn't count on it working as you intend it to."
"Then there will be tests. Collector, I would like you to show me how to perform a 'draining spell'."
"But who would you use it on? We're the only people here!"
"Do not forget, Collector. My soldiers are stationed on the very island that the witches call home. By now, I hope they have already earned their trust. You will see how this will unfold."
"I think I know what you're doing, and I don't think Emperor Be-" Collector was stopped.
Calus interrupted, "I assume you know of his hatred for the witches too. He would be more than pleased to know what I am doing, Collector."
"And you're really really sure this won't stop me from being fr-"
Calus interrupted once more, "Yes, yes. I am certain that this will not impede upon your freedom. You have the word of a soon to be god." Calus laughed, "And if it does. I will take it upon myself to free you personally."
"Fine, I believe you. You did promise after all."
"Exactly. And that very promise will be fulfilled as long as you show me how to do a draining spell."
"Of course! All you need is just someone to use it on! A witch preferably."
"That can be arranged." Qexal and Ilzat arrived to Calus's side. "Qexal, Ilzat. You will return to the Isles, find me a witch, any witch. Bring them back to me. Be discreet, but if you require the assistance of our forces there, do not hesitate to work with them. Go, and return to me with full hands."
Qexal and Ilzat both looked at each other and nodded in compliance. They headed for the beach to leave in the barge.
At the Owl House, Caiatl found herself victim to an assault of annoyance from Hooty. Luz and Amity watched as it ensued, laughing at the two. "Does this creature have to be this insufferable?" Caiatl asked, agitated.
"Insufferable? I think I'm more of a fun owl! Hoot hoot!" Hooty exclaimed in a cheerful voice.
"Don't worry, you get used to Hooty's…friendliness after a while. But for you specifically, you might have trouble doing that." Luz said happily.
"He is lucky that you are friends with him. Otherwise he may have been wrapped around my hammer."
Fearful, Hooty retreated back into the door, "I think I'll let you be. Hoot."
Luz laughed a little, "Let's…not do that, okay?" She asked nervously.
Amity walked forward, looking up at the colossal Caiatl, "So, empress. Where are you from exactly?"
Caiatl looked down, looking both Luz and Amity in the eyes, "I take it Calus didn't tell you about the homeworld of the Cabal. Its beauty, its majesty."
"No, he never did. He seemed more interested in telling us about his 'greatness' instead." Luz responded.
Caiatl let out a small sigh, "I only figured as much. Calus has always been a self absorbed individual, despite being emperor. He never saw the jaw dropping sights of our homeworld, Torobatl, like everyone else. Torobatl was, according to legend, never the original homeworld of my people. I am not old enough to know if there ever was another, but it doesn't defeat the fact that my planet, my home, was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Any and everything about the planet was Cabal in my eyes. That is until we lost it to a species called the Hive. Simply thinking about them boils my blood. They infiltrated our ranks, invaded our planet, slaughtered my people. All for their false gods. Ever since then, my people have been scattered throughout the universe. Most found their way to my empire, others serve their own purpose. And as you all now know, some are loyal to Calus. Once the Cabal ruled thousands of worlds, now we rule none." Caiatl looked up to the sky, "Even in a different realm, I still see our stars glisten in the sky," She said in a solemn tone.
Amity and Luz both gasped in surprise, "Wow, that just sounds…terrible, Caiatl. I think you're very strong for being able to go through so much, and still lead your people." Luz said as she looked at Amity, then back at Caiatl, "Also, you just look pretty strong."
"Hm, thank you, human. But there is no point in dwelling on the past. Doing so will only result in making us weaker in the present and the future. Fortunately, looking back has always been one of Calus's weaknesses, and that is something to be used against him."
"But you don't even know where he is! He can't be here on the Isles, especially after last night. Not to mention the fact that his soldiers are out and about in town, probably looking for us now!" Amity stressed.
"I could have an entire army here to scour this realm for Calus, but as I said before, that would only start a war between our factions. I want to spare this place. It is unique and mysterious, and doesn't deserve to be tainted by war or Calus's dangerous ambitions. I must do it alone, discreetly."
"We've seen you taking them on though. Sure you can hold your own against a few, but there's probably hundreds of them!" Luz exclaimed, "I don't know if you and your guards can handle all of that. You need help." She continued, "I'm sure both of our goals align in some way. We want to stop Emperor Belos, and you want to stop your father. They just so happen to be pretty evil, plus, they work with each other. So if we take down one, then the other has to fall in some way, right?"
"Tell me, this Emperor Belos. What is your quarrel with him?" Caiatl asked, curious.
"For starters, he tried to literally turn Eda to stone. Do you know Eda? I don't think you do. Grumpy old witch who takes care of me," Luz laughed a little, "Anyway, yeah, he did that. Also, he's tried to capture, hurt and threaten me and my friends for what seems like since I got here. There's also the Day of Unity. We don't know what it is yet, but whatever it is, it's no good, and I refuse to let it happen."
Caiatl shook her head, letting out a groan, "Nothing but another despot seeking power. If this 'Belos' is truly allied with Calus, then he is a traitor to the Cabal Empire. And if that means working with you, and the people of this realm, then so be it. There shall be retribution for both of them. Now, do you have a plan to dethrone Belos?"
Luz sighed, "...No," She sat down and put her head down in shame, "Really, I've been trying to figure out how to get home, to see my mama again. I know she misses me, and she doesn't even know where I am. I tried to talk to her a few days before but…I wasn't even able to feel the touch of her hand again." She lifted her head back up," Talk about disappointment, huh?" She said with regret. Luz continued, "But hey, there's always hope, y'know?" She put her head down, before looking back up at Caiatl, "Hey, I saw some of those Loyalist guys teleport away on some sort of platform. Do you think that I could use that to get back home?"
"Tell me, Luz. If I were to assist you in receiving a transmat device, would you abandon your friends? The people you've met?" She pointed to Amity with her hand, "This new world you've explored? Would you abandon the cause to stop a tyrant - no, two tyrants, to go home?" Caiatl said in a contemptuous, but regardful tone. Luz stayed silent, staring at the empress. Caiatl stared back, her eyes peering into the girl's soul.
A few tears ran down Luz's face, "No! I wouldn't!" She started to get more emotional, "But if you had the chance to see your loved ones again, wouldn't you take it?!" Amity walked over and hugged Luz, wiping the tears off her face.
Amity looked at Caiatl with an upset expression, "Caiatl. Please."
"No, it's alright, Amity. Let her talk. Maybe she'll say something that I need to hear." Luz responded.
Caiatl approached the two and knelt down, "My intentions were not to make you emotional, human. I wanted to encourage you to do better, to think better."
"Oh yeah? And what is that supposed to mean?" Luz got up, getting closer to Caiatl's face.
"Think of the present, not of the future or past. Reflecting on what you could or could have done will only make you wish to be a different person. If you want to take control of what you want, you need to take control of what you have now." Caiatl said with a solemn tone.
Luz wiped the rest of the tears off her face, "Yeah, maybe you're right. But wouldn't that make you a hypocrite? Everything that your father did all those years ago, the things that happened to your planet. You can't just forget that, can you? Just to 'take control of what you want'?"
Caiatl stood up, turning around, "I admit. Even I am at fault for mulling over the past. There is nothing I can do to stop that, but attempt to quell those memories. Ever since Torobatl was lost, I've had to stay strong for my men, my war council. For myself. It has been so long that…I lost track of myself, consumed by my station as empress."
"I - I'm sorry, Caiatl. I…didn't mean to bring up bad memories again. I just want you to know, I'd never abandon my friends, ever. And I don't want to abandon my mom either, I feel bad that I left with every day that passes."
Caiatl sighed, turning back to face Luz, "I understand what you mean. Perhaps we are not so different." She knelt back down, placing a finger on Luz's shoulder, "Heed these words, do not run from your past, but do not let it catch you. Stand fast and be strong enough to face it, and your future. For now, pick yourself up. We will defeat Calus and Belos together, soon. And you will be reunited with your mother."
Luz sniffled, wiping her arm across her face, "Thanks, Caiatl. Sorry that I kind of snapped on you. Not a very good attribute for someone trying to take down two tyrants, huh?" She laughed awkwardly.
"It is fine. Your passion for your friends and family is what will guide you to the end. Take pride in that."
"So, what do we do now?" Luz asked. "We still don't have a plan."
"I will consult with my advisor. The details will be relayed to you in due time." Caiatl looked over at Amity, "And I suggest you return home. I'm sure that after our skirmish, your family is worried."
"Hey, I'm not going anywhere. Not while Luz is in danger of being found by those guys." Amity crossed her arms.
"Amity, she's right." Luz said reluctantly, "You need to go home so your family knows that you're safe. You wouldn't want your parents sending some ninja spy witch to come find you, would you?" She remarked jokingly as she laughed. Suddenly she stopped, "But wait, why shouldn't she stay here. Wouldn't they know what she looks like?"
Caiatl responded, "Doubtful. They were all blinded, they would have only seen us two. If they did see her and the others, then it'd only be glimpses. They will have to guess on who else was involved."
Luz thought over it, "...I hope you're right. If she gets into any trouble, then you have to come with me, otherwise I'll just go myself." She said sternly.
"With that, I can not disagree."
Luz walked closer to Amity, "You should get going."
"But, will you be sa-" Amity tried to talk before Luz interrupted.
"No buts. I'll be safe, I promise. We have a big space empress here with us." Luz hugged her tight, before letting go of her, "Now go before I change my mind."
Amity giggled, "You know? I wish you weren't so persuasive sometimes." She walked off, waving at Luz.
"Text me when you get home!" Luz yelled. She looked at Caiatl, "Hey, Caiatl. Before you go."
"Hm?"
"I noticed that none of the Loyalists you fought had weapons. But when I was in your father's mind, they all did. What's up with that?"
"That, I do not know. But I do know that they have disgraced themselves. There is no greater dishonor for a Cabal, than to be disarmed. This may be used to our advantage. But I doubt such an edge will be smoothed before we capitalize upon it."
"If they do get their weapons back." Luz's tone went from optimistic to more gloomy after hearing this, "You'd have to call your army, I bet."
"Not exactly. But if they do become too much of a threat then I will do what I must. If the time comes, then I will warn you beforehand. There will be contingencies in place for such an event."
"...Alright. I'm gonna go back inside with the others. There's supposed to be a party soon for Eda's sister, and there's gonna be a lot of people here. So I suggest you get going before anyone sees you."
"Of course. Enjoy the celebrations." Caiatl walked off.
"Bye Caiatl!" Luz waved, before going into the house.
Meanwhile, Vruzra was busy progressing her plot against Caiatl. "So, the empress retreats. Certainly her warriors wouldn't follow a coward. Nonetheless one who was helped by those lesser than her." She sat inside of the ship on her data pad, finishing writing up propaganda to send to her conclave aboard the warships. Her message wrote, 'The Empress's cowardice knows no bounds, first she allies with the Vanguard. Now she wishes to join forces with the inhabitants of this new world. This is not the way of the Cabal Empire. Rally behind me and my comrades. Glory awaits with the Loyalists of Emperor Calus.' After finishing writing, looked around the ship to find a way to pass it on, "How would one pass on such a message?" The ship's transmitting beacon in the cockpit caught her attention, "Of course. So simple." She walked over to the cockpit, connecting her data pad up to the device, and setting it to contact her conclave specifically. "Weakness will not suffice as the empress." She said to herself. The beacon started to transmit the message, making a beeping noise as it did so.
The pilot who was checking on the ship heard this. He decided to investigate the noise, walking around and inside it, he saw Vruzra near the cockpit controls. "Psion!" He yelled.
Vruzra turned around, "Yes?"
"Why are you near the controls?! You aren't messing with my ship, are you?!"
"No, I was just looking for something. No need to worry."
"I'll stop worrying when you step away." The pilot entered the ship, walking over to Vruzra. He observed the controls, "It looks like you haven't tampered with anything." He looked at the data pad, seeing that it was making the beeping noise, "Why is that beeping?" He pointed to it. "Explain."
Vruzra got nervous, fearing that her plan would be ruined, "It is recharging. That is all." She said, trying to hold a confident tone.
He overlooked what was actually on the data pad, "Then use it less. That sound is annoying. I can't upkeep this ship with that nuisance of a noise in my ears." He walked out of the ship to continue his work.
Vruzra sighed, "How can one be so idiotic?" The data pad made one last beep, "It is finished then." She took it out, and deleted the message from it to hide any evidence, along with the logs on the transmitting beacon. "Soon, your own legions will turn on you. And Emperor Calus will be the true ruler of the Cabal once more." She whispered.
Not too long after, Caiatl arrived. She conversed with the guards, "Report. Were there any discretions?" She asked.
"No, empress. Nothing to report, empress," One of the guards responded.
"Of course. Still, stay alert."
The pilot walked up to Caiatl and bowed, "Empress, you grace us with your continued presence." He rose up and looked at her, "I have something that I wish to tell you."
"Speak."
"The psion. I…do not trust her. I saw her near the controls of the ship. She claimed to be innocent of doing so, but I have reason to be skeptical."
Caiatl gave the pilot a hmph, "She is my advisor. If I trust her, then you should trust her as well. I will not force you to abandon your belief. Remain in your place for now, if I notice Vruzra's treachery, then I will deal with her myself." The pilot nodded and returned to working on the ship. Caiatl walked into the ship to find Vruzra on her data pad.
"Ah, empress! You have returned!" Vruzra said excitedly. "How was your interaction with the humans?"
"It…was nothing short of an eye opener. But it is not worth conversating over." Caiatl placed her hammer on a rack and sat down, "I am torn."
"For what reason, empress?"
Caiatl placed a hand on her head, "The Loyalists have an army, albeit a small one. I have legions of Cabal, ready to crush what is left of them. We have been over this topic multiple times. Is it truly immoral to pursue my vendetta, at the cost of possibly ravaging a world?"
"My empress, if you would allow me to interject. While I do understand your internal conflict, I see no other way in dealing with our foes."
"This is something that I will have to think about. Perhaps you are correct. Maybe this place will have to endure until my quarrel with Calus is finished." Caiatl stood up, "Has there been any word from our forces?"
"No, empress. It seems our connection with our…realm - is weak." Vruzra responded.
"I fear we will have to return soon then. Calus will never be found if we continue at this rate."
"A great answer to hear, empress."
"I am not so certain the human would be pleased to hear this."
"What makes you so certain, empress?"
"She cares for this world as if it were her own. Far be it from me to take that away from her and the people who inhabit it."
"Then speak with her. She will understand, she must, if she is to survive."
"Something tells me she will not. I will speak with her anyway, soon." Caiatl dismissed Vruzra so she could be alone with her own thoughts. Despite being empress of the Cabal Empire, she had never faced a dilemma concerning conserving a world. She let out a frustrated groan, slamming her fist into the wall next to her and grasped her head. At this moment, she was thinking as just Caiatl, not Empress Caiatl.
The same day, Za'aurk established Firebase Ares on the beach the Loyalists landed on. The Loyalists, short on supplies, could only make a base consisting of a few barricades and other supportive structures. Squads patrolled the area, and a single harvester patrolled the skies around the perimeter.
The primus was being tended by Psions, sitting down on a "Those wretched Witches will pay. Had I not disarmed us, I would still have vision in both eyes. A foolish decision." He got up and walked over to Urlgor, who wasn't present at the parade, "Valus, report."
The colossus saluted, "Primus. We have nothing to report. No trespassers have been spotted near the base. We have only deterred wildlife from drawing too close. And transmat has not been established yet, rather, can not be established."
"No matter, we will survive. For now, continue your duties." Za'aurk turned around. Urlgor stopped him.
"I heard what happened, Primus. It is…embarrassing to say the least. I do not question your prowess, but to be outsmarted and bested by witches." Urlgor sighed, and leaned closer to Za'aurk, "There is…dissent amongst the ranks. Rumors are spreading of your defeat to those lesser than you. Our soldiers are questioning your strength."
Za'aurk stared at Urlgor, scowling. "Let them question and underestimate me. They are no Ghaul. I will not be overthrown by my own men. Inform Bracus Khuun that I have an assignment for his unit."
"Sir? What is the assignment?"
"Valus, do you remember the witches who delved into the mind of Emperor Calus with you?"
"Yes, sir. Why?"
"During my battle with Caiatl, I noticed one of them helping her. It was the human that came with you. She called out to Caiatl, helping her. The rest, you already know. I need them both found, so that they may pay for their crimes against the emperor."
"Caiatl is here? Has she brought her army with her?"
"No, there was only one ship. I am certain of this. Though I doubt she came alone. Her army is focused on the Leviathan, they will find nothing worth their time. If they do mount an assault, we will be ready for them. For now, we focus on the emperor's plan."
"Yes, Primus. I will keep the outpost's forces on high alert."
"Good, now go."
Urlgor nodded, and walked away to speak with Khuun. He approached the Bracus, who was speaking with some legionaries. "Bracus!" Urlgor exclaimed.
Khuun turned around to see Urlgor. "Valus! To what do I owe the pleasure?" He asked.
"The Primus has assigned your unit a mission. I am here to brief you."
"My unit?" Khuun looked around, confused, "Why us?"
"Do not question your orders, Bracus!" Urlgor yelled as he pointed to Khuun, "Now, listen. Primus Za'aurk needs you to find the perpetrators of the parade yesterday. I do believe you were there, though out of the action. Your primary targets are Caiatl and a human, who I am fairly certain you will remember."
"A human? I thought it was only a band of witches?"
"Apparently not. The human who accompanied us into the emperor's mind. She was one of the aggressors against Za'aurk, she helped Caiatl escape."
"I…do remember. How could such a small, powerless thing harm the Primus?"
"We will not save face with your questions, Bracus. The people of this realm must know that the Loyalists are…trustworthy. Capturing the ones who ruined their celebration will prove such a point. That is where you come in to find them. We have been allowed access to a place called the 'Conformatorium'. Take them there once they are captured, the assistant of this realm's emperor will meet with you to take you there."
Khuun looked at Urlgor, stunned, "The mission shall be completed, Valus. I will inform my unit. We'll be ready to move out by tonight."
"Excellent. Serve your emperor proud, Bracus." Before Urlgor could leave, Khuun called out to him.
"Valus! How will we find her?!" Khuun cried out.
"My apologies for not telling you earlier. We intercepted a signal earlier. It appeared to be of Cabal origin, it was faint, as our technology is not as strong here." Urlgor handed Khuun a data pad with coordinates that led to the source of the signal. "Investigate there first, you know what to do if you find them. Dismissed, Bracus." Urlgor left Khuun to go deal with his own matters.
"An assignment to capture Caiatl?" He whispered to himself, "I have yet to prove myself, but if I was entrusted with such a task, perhaps I am ready." Khuun turned around and returned to talking with the legionaries.
At the Emperor's castle, a bizarre sight was spotted by Coven guards. Cabal were guarding the entrance to the castle. The two forces exchanged eyes, amongst the Coven guards was Hunter who had just come from a mission. These Cabal had their weapons, holding them up in the air with one arm. Hunter kept walking, taking his eyes off the Cabal, but not letting his guard down, keeping his staff in both hands. He entered the castle to find only Coven guards, he let out a sigh of relief, lowering the staff. Arriving at the throne room, he peeked in to see all the Coven Heads. Not wanting to get in trouble, he resorted to eavesdropping on them.
"I understand all your concerns about our new residents, but I want to assure you that their presence here is beneficial for us. The fight against Wild Magic grows ever more stressful for our own people, and their help is very important for us to overcome such an obstacle."
Darius, the head of the Abomination Coven stepped forward, "My lord, if you will allow me to interject. On behalf of all of my fellow Coven Heads, I'd like to say we have been doing a fine job on our own." Eberwolf growled in agreement, the others all looked at Darius, sharing his thought of mind. Everyone looked to be in agreement, except for Raine, who had a conflicted expression on their face.
Terra was the only other person who didn't agree, she got in the center of her colleagues, "I for one think that this is a great change for the Isles. With a rise in crime and Wild Magic, it only makes sense for us to have some 'extra reinforcements'." Terra looked at Raine with an intimidating look on her face, "Isn't that right, Raine?"
Raine suddenly tensed up, "Oh, yes! I agree with you, Terra! Wild Magic will never be eradicated without this new found help." Raine was obviously sheepish, but the others looked past that.
Outside of the throne room, Hunter heard giant footsteps behind him, each step made a clanging noise. He turned around to see one of the Cabal entering the throne room, it was Urlgor. The boy locked eyes with the colossus for a second, but with his gaze, it felt like a minute to him. Urlgor passed him into the throne room.
Belos broke his silence and interrupted the argument. He stood up and spread his arms, "I thank you all for expressing your opinions on the matter! I really do! But I do feel that I can not explain our current 'situation' any better. That is why we have brought a guest to further clear the water on this!" He exclaimed as he extended his arm behind the Coven Heads. They all turned around to face their guest, Urlgor. "This is Valus Urlgor! One of the leaders of our new 'security' force."
"Thank you, but I need no introduction. I was simply sent here to answer any questions, and address concerns about the presence of my men here." In his mind, Urlgor was disappointed that he was relegated to such a position, but kept his composure, "I know that our abrupt arrival was a surprise to you all, but take pleasure in knowing we have your best interests in mind. I doubt you all know, but we are known as a race of warriors and conquerors. But fear not, for our emperor is a peaceful one, and simply wishes to offer his help."
Hunter continued peaking in, "So that's why all those other guys are outside," He whispered to himself.
"Warriors and conquerors? Does that explain the disaster at the parade yesterday?" Darius asked, arms crossed.
"What happened at the parade is…most unfortunate. We never accounted for such an incident. It would seem an old foe from our past has followed us here. Though, as we speak, I have ordered a squad to deal with the perpetrators. They'll be brought before you by sunrise tomorrow."
"Did you say, an 'old foe from your past'?" Darius remarked, "You didn't bring conflict to our home, did you?"
"No, we never intended to bring conflict here. We came to quell your conflict against this Wild Magic. My forces work diligently to make sure no harm comes to the citizens of these Isles."
"Hm, 'diligently' is an understatement," Darius said under his breath.
Terra, once again walked to the center to voice her opinion, "As I've said before, I think it is a great idea to have more help in ridding the Isles of Wild Magic. After all, there will be no Utopia with such a virus running rampant." Darius and Eberwolf looked at each other, displeased with the beliefs of their colleague.
Adrian Graye, head of the Illusion Coven also stepped forward, "I, for one, agree with Snapdragon. The Day of Unity will be one of, if not the most important day for us. A day of triumph and perfection for witches, demons, and me alike."
Urlgor nodded in agreement, "Yes, after all, we are working directly with the Emperor's Coven. The emperor's trust must come above all, shouldn't it?"
"I'm still not convinced. If your emperor really wants to help us, how come we've never seen him?" Darius asked.
"Emperor Calus has visited these Isles many times. More so in the past weeks." Urlgor's tone turned to one of bitterness, "Perhaps if you had paid attention, you would have seen him." His tone switched back, "Will there be any more questions?"
Darius gasped, and prepared to snap back, but was interrupted by Belos, "I am sorry, but I do believe that is all the time we have for this meeting. I have other matters to attend to, and I would like to see them done."
"Of course. I extend my gratitude to you all for offering me an audience. We look forward to working more with you all. And my apologies for any dismay my soldiers outside may have caused, they will be moving out with me." Urlgor bowed before leaving the room, once again locking eyes with a peeping Hunter as he walked past.
Belos addressed the Coven Heads before they left, "And I thank you all for attending this meeting. I hope you can find it in your hearts to accept the Cabal as if they were one of our own. You all are dismissed."
"Cabal, hm?" Darius said to himself, "Let's go, Eber. We have a meeting of our own to attend." Eberwolf grunted and followed Darius as he exited the room. The rest of the Coven Heads soon followed.
Seeing that everyone was leaving, Hunter acted as if he had just arrived. Everyone else passed him up. Darius looked at Hunter, gave him a slight smile, and continued walking. Hunter raised his eyebrow in confusion and walked into the throne room.
"Approach, Hunter." Belos said.
Hunter walked to the throne, and took a knee before Belos, "Uncle, I return from my mission."
"Were you spotted at all?"
"No, they were none the wiser to my presence."
"Good, it would be a shame if our new found 'allies' caught you."
Hunter stood up, "Uncle, do you really trust them? Those 'Cabal', I mean."
"Hm, to some extent, yes. But I know better than to let them run rampant on the Isles as if they are some type of dictators. I am simply using them to rid the Isles of those nuisance witches that continuously oppose me. Though, I am unfortunately under blackmail from their leader, but it doesn't matter. The Day of Unity draws closer, and their usefulness will start to dwindle."
Hunter took his helmet off, his eyes wide, "Blackmail? Is there anything I can do to help?" He sounded determined.
"No, my dear Hunter. It is something that I must deal with myself. But I am certain you and everyone else will see in due time."
"A - Are you sure," Hunter stuttered, "I mean, I can he-"
Belos cut him off, "It is fine, Hunter. I do not want to risk you being put in danger by such brutes. Now, run along to your room."
Hunter sighed, disappointed, "Yes, uncle." Hunter began walking out of the room, but was stopped by Belos.
"Oh, and Hunter?"
"Yes?"
"Don't get yourself into situations bigger than yourself. It would be a shame if anything happened to you."
Hunter turned around, trying to think of something to say, but instead just walked out of the room.
On Caiatl's flagship, which still covered the entrance to the portal, Vruzra's conspirators just received her message. However, it was scrambled due to a weak signal, despite this, they could pick out the words that conveyed their objective. '...Empress's cowardice…No bounds…Not the way of the Cabal Empire…Rally behind me…Glory…Loyalists of Emperor Calus.' The Psions were gathered within a hidden compartment of the ship. One of them spoke up, "This message. It is surely disordered. But our comrade makes her point clear. Even the Cabal couldn't mistake it. Should we release it? This could possibly result in the very end of our lives." A data pad with said message was passed around, the congregation all nodded strongly in agreement. "Then it is decided. We will return to our stations and spread it. Those who chase glory will flock like Hive to the weak. None of this is to be spoken of." They all exited their hideaway discreetly, returning to their stations.
On the bridge of the ship, Valus Satuur walked in, having just returned from the Leviathan, leaving his forces to deal with the rest of any holdouts on the Leviathan. "Report!" He yelled at the crew.
"Valus! We've received a signal from the portal. We can't make out anything other than its point of origin." One of the bridge officers responded.
"Perhaps it is her telling us she is ready then. Is it of Cabal origin?"
"Yes, Valus. I believe it could only be Empress Caiatl. The Loyalists do not know of our fleet's presence, though we can not be certain of that."
"I want this ship moved out of the way. I am going through that portal personally to confirm." Satuur marched out of the bridge, his weapon in hand.
"Yes, Valus!" The navigators of the ship all yelled in unison as they slowly moved the ship away from the portal.
"The Loyalists on the Leviathan were just an appetizer to satiate my weapon. But the ones who escaped will be desperate to live. Desperate to protect their false emperor. They'll fight to their last breath if they have to. That'll make their defeat all the more satisfying." Satuur said out loud.
After a while, the ship was clear of the portal and the navigators relayed this to Satuur. Shortly after, the Valus ordered a ship to be readied for his departure and walked off to the hangar.
Once he got to the hangar, a centurion called over to Satuur. "Valus, your ship is ready."
"You have my gratitude, centurion." Satuur walked on to the ship. Its engines roared as they powered up.
"Are you sure you won't need any back-up?" The centurion asked.
Satuur held his slug thrower up, "If I needed help, centurion, I would have brought more than this. On the other hand, I will have the support of the empress, one of the greatest warriors I have ever had the pleasure of battling for."
The centurion responded with a simple nod. The ramp of the ship closed and took off, departing from the hangar and heading for the portal.
Satuur walked to the cockpit as the ship closed in on the portal. Standing next to the pilot, he braced himself, he felt that anything could go wrong, but still decided to brave the venture to what could possibly be his doom. After entering the portal, Satuur was surprised, taking a moment to register what just happened.
He couldn't see much due to the night sky, but was nonetheless captivated, "I've seen and landed on hundreds of worlds. I have seen all types of bizarre, chaotic and peaceful worlds. Yet this-" Satuur was cut off by the pilot.
"Sir, I've locked on to the signal. Shall we begin descent?"
Satuur was enticed by the scenery, but snapped out of his trance, "Yes, take us down. Make sure that we aren't close, land us far away. We're already giving our position away, we don't want to give Empress Caiatl's position away also. We'll just have to trek our way to her on foot."
"Yes, Valus." The pilot began the ship's descent onto the Isles.
Satuur's ship landed not too far from a factory and a manor. It could be heard dropping into the atmosphere after a while. The ramp slammed onto the ground, making a loud clanging noise.
"We'll move out once I gather the bearings of our surroundings. For now, stay with the ship." Satuur told the pilot as he walked out. He took a deep breath, "The air here. It is so familiar, and so other-worldly at the same time."
The residents of the nearby manor heard the screech of the ship's descent. Inside the manor was Amity, and her two older twin siblings, Edric and Emira. Their parents were out, pitching new ideas for their company.
Sitting on her bed, Amity was texting Luz. She told her that she just heard a weird noise, and said she was going to check it out. They both texted bye to each other. Amity got up, left her room and walked to the front door. She was stopped by both Edric and Emira.
"Mittens! You're finally outta your room, huh?" Edric exclaimed as he ran up next to Amity.
"Yeah. We were wondering what you were doing in there." Emira added, "Talking to your girlfriend, huh?" She asked jokingly.
Amity's face turned a little red, "Yes! No! Ye-" She calmed herself down, "Sure, whatever."
"Thought so. Anyway, where are ya going? You seem to be in a bit of a hurry." Emira asked.
Amity raised one of her eyebrows, confused, "Wait, you guys didn't hear the really loud noise just now?"
"Oh, no. We heard it. We just chose not to do anything about it. That's all." Edric responded.
"Yeah, I figured as much." Amity said sarcastically. "Anyways, I was going to go check out whatever just made that noise."
"Alone? At night? Mittens, how irresponsible and reckless of you!" Emira yelled out.
"Yeah! It could be some big creepy monster looking to eat your heart! Or worse-" Edric looked around, narrowing his eyes and lowering his voice, "-it could be a…giraffe." Emira gasped in response, and nodded her head.
Amity sighed, "I'm sure it's not a giraffe. And trust me, I know what a giraffe sounds like. Giraffe or not, I'm still going either way." She grabbed her jacket and put it on, "But hey, if you both wanna come with me, then I'll take any help I can get." She opened the door and began walking out.
"Hey, Mittens! Wait up!" Edric and Emria yelled out as they quickly slipped their jackets on, running after Amity. Once outside, the trio walked down a hill into the woods their home overlooked. They could see their family factory in the distance as they walked. "Do you think mom and dad know we're not home?" Edric asked.
"If mom is the oracle she makes herself out to be then, yeah, probably." Amity responded, "But they're both on some business pitch or something in the factory."
"So?" Emira replied.
"So, mom won't be worried about what we're doing. For now at least. Once she's done counting her snails, then she'll worry." Said in response. Edric and Emira both shrugged and continued following their sister. After a short walk down the hill, they entered the woods. It was near pitch black and they could just barely see each other.
Edric pulled a small lantern out of his pocket, commenting on how he always keeps one on him just in case. "And let there…" He thought to himself for a moment, "…not be darkness! Or whatever." He grumbled. Further out, they heard large footsteps. "Did anyone else hear that?" Edric asked, looking around nervously.
"Yeah…" Emira responded, "Anyway, Mittens. Uh, what made you so interested in this noise anyway?" She asked with a hint of fear in her voice.
"It just…sounded familiar. I wanted to check it out." Amity responded.
"Hold on. Familiar? We aren't in danger are we?" Edric questioned. Amity responded with a so-so hand gesture. Edric and Emira both recoiled a bit in response. The footsteps could be heard again, except they were starting to sound closer and closer with each one. They all stopped in their tracks as they got closer and closer.
"Hey, Mittens? So, why exactly did you recognize that loud noise at first?" Emira asked, her voice shaking as she talked.
"When you spend as much time with Luz as I have, then you start to come across and recognize what seems like thousands of things." Amity responded. She shushed them both when the sound of the footsteps got even closer and summoned her abomination arms, readying herself. Her siblings also assumed defensive stances.
"Whatever, or whoever you are, I can hear you skulking around in the dark. I am Valus Satuur of the Cabal Empire. Show yourself and I may spare you for your bravery in doing so."
"The…what?" Edric and Emira asked in unison.
Amity gasped, "There's more of them now?" She turned around to look at Ed and Em, "Okay, this might sound crazy, but-" She was cut off by Satuur finding them all.
"Found you. What did you gain from lurking around me?" Satuur exclaimed as he parted some shrubbery, looking down on them. "Humans."
They all put their hands up, "Woah woah woah! We weren't looking to like, attack you or anything! We just wanted to check up on some weird noise we heard!" Edric yelled out. "We just followed our sister here!" He continued, "Please don't hurt us!"
Amity shushed her brother, "Ed! Please, calm down!" Amity responded to Satuur, "Hey, wait. You said you were with the 'Cabal Empire' or whatever?" Satuur nodded in response. "Well, what if I told you that we- I know your empress and where she is."
"The empress? What do you know of her? Where is she? Is she alright?"
"Yeah. Actually, she's doing…alright, I'd say. All things considered, she's safe."
"That is a relief to hear. But how can I be sure you aren't trying to deceive me? I've heard tales of humans working with Loyalists before."
"To start, we aren't humans. Secondly, we literally helped your empress escape from the enemy, so I think some thanks are in order at some point." Amity looked at Ed and Emira, who were somewhat settling down, "Besides, they have nothing to do with this. They're just my overprotective siblings who tagged along."
"We are not overprotective! Not a lot at least!" Ed yelled out.
Emira walked next to Amity, whispering into her ear, "Mittens, are you sure this is safe? Is this what you've been up to the past week? Being some kind of…alien diplomat or something?"
"Something of the sort. It's more of an assistant diplomat for Luz." Amity responded. "We'll be fine, I'm sure of it."
Satuur waited for them to finish talking, "If you wish to gain my trust. Then take me to Empress Caiatl. I am ready to fight by her side. A few guards and an advisor will not suffice against the Loyalists."
"Yeah, that's the problem. We uh, kind of stirred a lot of trouble in town and it's a little hard to move around and stuff. Not to mention you're so…colossal. It'd be impossible to get around with you. No offense." Amity responded.
"That is fine, I will crush them all when I come across them." Satuur said confidently. "Where is this town anyway?"
"Oh, nuh-uh. No more fights in town. The last one was dangerous enough." Amity said strictly
"Wait. That big fight during the Coven Day parade. You were a part of that, Mittens?" Emira asked.
"Yeah." Amity responded, a bit of nervousness in her voice, "But we can talk about that later, yeah? Right now, we should focus on…all this."
"Yeah…of course, later." Ed and Emira looked at each other.
"So, is there any other way you can take me to my empress? There must be." Satuur sounded a bit desperate.
"Hey, it is the dead of night right now. We might be able to get something done. I'm sure we can avoid Bonesborough if we try." Edric suggested.
"I agree with the boy. Even if we are caught, we will have the element of surprise. I would imagine you all have a good layout of these islands?"
"Wow. I've never been complimented by whatever you are. I must be the first, and sir, I am honored." Edric replied.
"Ignore him. And yes, of course we know our way around. We do live here after all." Emira responded.
"If we hurry, we might be able to make it to Luz and Caiatl. I think I know a way there." Amity added, "I'm almost sure none of those Loyalist guys will know about it."
"Awesome! What's the route?" Edric asked.
"It's a bit in the territory of Bonesborough, but it'll be fine. We'll have to walk our way around Hexside, which is perfect since there shouldn't be anyone there now."
"Hexside? This isn't some trickery, is it?" Satuur asked, still a little suspicious.
"No trickery. Just trying to be helpful, okay?" Amity replied. "Now, are you ready?" She asked Satuur, who responded with a simple yes.
"I don't know, Mittens. Do you really think we should be doing this?" Emira asked.
"It's not like you guys have to come. But I'm doing this. For Luz." Amity replied.
"Well-" Emira spoke until she was interrupted by her brother.
"Come on, Em! Loosen up a little! When's the last time the both of us went on some wacky adventure with our little sis?" He asked.
"Yeah, but-" Emira was interrupted once again.
"But nothin', it'll be fine." He said as he waved his hand dismissively, "We'll be back home before breakfast tomorrow, I'm sure."
Emira groaned, looking at Edric, then Amity, "Fine, but you two are covering for us if any questions are asked." She looked up and pointed to Satuur, "And if it comes to it, you'll do some explaining too." Satuur, not knowing how to respond, simply nodded.
"Well then, I think it's settled. Blight siblings adventure!" Edric yelled excitedly, raising his arms in the air.
Satuur looked at Edric. "Refrain from raising your voice, boy. Keep it low." He continued, "Or don't use it at all." Edric lowered his arms, his smile turning to a frown as he followed the others.
However the conversation between Satuur and the Blight siblings was not as discreet as they thought it to be. A Psion was dispatched to investigate a harvester entering the realm. He arrived just in time to catch the end of their interaction. Khuun, who chimed in on the comms, listened as the Psion relayed information. The bracus decided to instead follow the information being relayed, rather than the coordinates he was given. The Psion scoped in with his binoculars, continuing his surveillance. Khuun finally spoke, ordering the Psion to follow them, and to not reveal himself until Caiatl's ship was found. And as they moved, the Psion shortly followed after them.
After thinking for the entire day, Caiatl finally decided what she would do. She walked to the Owl House, looking for Luz. When no one outside was found, she started yelling for Luz.
A few minutes later, Luz opened the door in her night attire, bags under her eyes and all. "How do they all sleep through the loudest things? But when I take the tiniest little step, it's like a bomb just went off." She looked up, "Oh, hey Caiatl." She yawned before her eyes widened, "Caiatl?! That was you calling my name? It's so late! What are you doing here?"
"My apologies if I have woken you, human." Caiatl responded
"Yeah, you definitely woke me up. I didn't know someone could even be so loud." Luz stretched, and yawned once more, "Anyway, what are you doing here?"
"I am here to inform you that I have come to a conclusion to our problem." Caiatl sighed, "It is rare for me to think on something for so long, just to come to such a bitter conclusion. But I have decided that the only way to rid this place of Calus's influence is with the weapons of my men. I will offer them to you in destroying Emperor Belos, if you so wish. We can not guarantee collateral damage, but we will help rebuild if need be."
"No, no, no, and no. That's the exact reason we don't want that here! There has to be another way!" Luz walked out, closing the door, "I don't believe someone like you could only come up with one solution. I barely know you personally, but I do know that the fact you're the empress of a warmongering race must mean you're unique in more than one way."
Caiatl's eyes narrowed, "What do you mean?"
"What I mean is, you're not just some super good fighter or whatever, but you must be a really good thinker! And because of that, there's no way you had just one idea to deal with this." Luz responded, trying to sound uplifting.
"I am…sorry, Luz." Caiatl shook her head, disappointed, "I see no other way. Either we pick off his forces slowly with what few men I have now, or I bring my army and crush them quickly and swiftly. What would you suggest?"
Luz took a hand and rested it on her chin, thinking to herself, "I got it! It may or may not be a completely reckless plan, but it'll be a plan nonetheless!"
"What are you thinking?"
"I guess I should run it by you. You're definitely more qualified for this." Luz put her hands together and took a deep breath, "Alright, so. When we were in Calus's mind we met these Loyalists who were also in his mind, and they fought each other in something called a 'Rite of Proving' to decide who would be able to get to help Calus escape from his mind. My plan is we use that in order to get them out of here. Good plan, huh? Huh?"
"Human, that…will never work."
"What? Why not?"
"All the Loyalists seek is glory and power. The ones you met are no different. I am certain they are no strangers to using ancient traditions for an advantage."
"I don't mean to sound rude but, it's either the risk of my plan going wrong, or risking the entire Demon Realm getting set on fire. I really don't want to see the second option become a reality so, please. If this doesn't work then we'll have no choice than to use your plan."
Caiatl suddenly turned around, "Quiet."
"What?"
Caiatl ignored Luz's confusion and slowly walked over to a bunch of bushes, hearing tree branches fall in the distance. Despite the darkness, she was able to spot the silhouette of a large figure. She signaled for Luz to get down, which she obliged. As the figure got within close range, Caiatl pulled a knife on them, pointing it to their neck.
"You still have reflexes as sharp as a severi, my empress."
Caiatl recognized the voice, "Valus Satuur?" Caiatl let go of him, sheathing her knife. "You were ordered to stay with the fleet. Why have you come here?"
"You sent a transmission, did you not? It was a weak, encrypted signal. The bridge engineers figured it was you. I took it upon myself to answer." Satuur responded.
"I did not send any message. It must have been a trap set by the Loyalists to draw me out." Caiatl looked at Luz, "You can stand up now, human."
Luz stood up, dusting herself off. She looked up at Valus Satuur, she had seen so many Cabal in the past week that it wasn't even surprising to her anymore. Instead, she just walked up to him, holding her arm out to him, "Hey! I'm Luz, nice to meet you!" Satuur stared at her, not saying anything, "Actually, on second thought, I'll wait." She awkwardly put her arm back to her side.
"Who is the human?" Satuur asked.
"She is an ally who also wishes to see Calus defeated. We have a common goal, and I will see it done."
"I see. Then my apologies for my ignorance, human. I am Valus Satuur, loyal warrior of Empress Caiatl." Satuur bowed.
"Hey! We're here too!" Edric yelled out.
"Edric? Luz asked. She then saw Amity and Emira walk up behind him, "Amity? Emria?" She ran up to them, "What are you guys doing here? Wait, how did you get here with him?" She asked, referring to Satuur.
"Nevermind how they got here. It isn't safe to speak here right now." Caiatl said. She looked at Amity, "Were you all followed?"
"Not to my knowledge, no." Amity responded.
"Are you certain?"
"I am ninety-percent sure we weren't followed here."
"Then come with me, we shouldn't be here." Caiatl gestured for the group to follow her. They all followed.
Luz walked beside Caiatl, "Wait, Caiatl. Where are we going?"
"I won't take any risks. We'll be safer with my guards." Caiatl continued, "I would have a guilty conscience if your home was discovered by the Loyalists. It is already an enormous risk taking you with me. But you all do not deserve to be left out. Especially since you yourself came up with a plan, despite it being a rash one."
"I'm sure it'll work…" Luz said with a hint of confidence, "A little bit."
"Wait, Luz. What's your plan?" Amity asked.
"I think it's better to explain when we get there."
The spying Psion also left with them, still relaying information to his superiors. Khuun and his unit shortly began mobilizing to the location.
After a short walk, the group arrived at the ship. Caiatl's guards jumped out of the bushes, weapons at the ready.
"Stand down." Caiatl ordered the guards. They all put their weapons down and assumed position standing around the ship. "This is where we will discuss Luz's plan." They all walked into the ship. Satuur and Caiatl sat down easily, but for Luz and the others, the seats were just a bit too high for their size. "Hm, my apologies for forgetting to prepare accommodations for your smaller size. Usually ones your size would have a place to sit, but I am afraid this is no ordinary transport."
"No, no. That's fine, right guys?" Luz asked the others. They all nodded in agreement.
"So, Luz. This plan of yours. What is it exactly?" Amity asked.
"Well, I'm not sure you remember the exact details but, I want to play the Loyalists at their own game. Challenge them to a battle."
"Luz, you aren't serious, right?!" Amity yelled out loud, "Challenge those guys to a fight?! I remember what happened in the mind of Calus! They fought to the death with each other! How are you so sure they'll accept anyway?"
"You were in someone's mind, Mittens? How much did we miss?!" Emira asked aloud.
"It's a very long story, trust me." Amity responded.
"They will accept," Caiatl interjected. "Though I am almost uncertain if they will agree to your terms. They are desperate. But when a challenge of battle is brought before the Cabal, they must take it, lest they be disgraced for the rest of their lives."
Amity looked at Caiatl, "So, they accept the challenge, then what? We just…fight them until one of us wins, right?"
"You fight until the other is defeated. Until they draw their last breath. There is no other way, that is the way it must be." Caiatl responded.
Luz faced Amity, grabbing her by the shoulders, "Amity, trust me on this. We can do this. Remember when we had their leader on his knees? Sure, we didn't outright take him down, but that just showed us that some old warmongering race of aliens is no match for the magic of the Demon Realm." Luz glanced at Caiatl, rubbing her hand on the back of her head, "Heh, no offense to you of course, empress." Caiatl just nodded in response. "Not to mention, we even have some warriors of our own on our side. Whatever or whoever they throw at us, then I'm sure we'll overcome them!"
Amity thought to herself, "Fine," She was about to continue until she was stopped by a voice outside.
"Stay with the ship. Satuur, with me." Caiatl got up and grabbed her hammer, Satuur followed, not having a weapon after leaving his own behind. They walked outside the ship to be met with a tight circle of Loyalists around the ship. Her guards were nowhere to be found, presumed to be captured or dead, along with the pilot.
Bracus Khuun stepped forward, "Drop your weapon, Caiatl. We are under strict orders to bring you to the Primus, but we will not hesitate to kill you if needed."
"You will have to drag my lifeless corpse to the feet of your coward of a Primus before I willingly surrender myself to you scum." Caiatl responded defiantly.
Two legionaries started to grab Caiatl and Satuur, "Then we'll just have to for-'' Khuun was cut off by Luz who walked out the ship and to Caiatl's side. He had a vague memory of the human, but ignored it, "Who interrupts? Are you allies with this traitor to the throne?"
"Yeah, and if I'm allied with another traitor to the throne, then I guess that makes me a traitor to the throne twice. But you probably don't care." Luz responded.
"Then you'll be taken away also." Khuun replied.
"No! They have nothing to do with this!" Caiatl cried out.
"Treason to the true ruler of the Cabal will not be tolerated. No matter who it is." Khuun said sternly.
"Wait, before you take us away. There's something I'd like to say." Luz told Khuun.
Khuun looked left and right, glancing at his subordinates, "And what is that, human?"
"I- No, we challenge your strongest fighter to a Rite of Proving! We all know you have no other choice than to accept! So just do it!" Luz exclaimed loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "Do you accept?"
And that's where I'm gonna end it. I hope this chapter was enjoyable to read, I hope there aren't too many things going on here. I admit, I may have gone a little hard trying to get things moving. Nonetheless, I'm satisfied with how it turned out and since this is somewhat of a cliffhanger, I'll maybe try to get the next chapter out earlier, since I won't be as busy. Don't hold me to it though. And trust me, there truly will be a mind of opulence again at some point. See ya next time.
