Chapter XV: Grievous' Dark Cloak.
Ignore Your Instincts At Your Peril.
Viceroy Gunray captured! Senator Padmé Amidala has scored a victory against the Separatist Alliance on the remote world of Rodia, securing the arrest of the diabolical Confederate leader Nute Gunray. The Jedi Council has dispatched Jedi Knight Naruto Uzumaki and Luminara Unduli's Padawan Barriss to escort the Viceroy to Coruscant under heavy guard. Once there, he will face trial for his many war crimes.…
Maelstrom.
Naruto was reading a report on Padmé Amidala who had gone to Rodia in an attempt to keep their allegiance to the Galactic Republic. She also brought along C-3PO and Jar Jar Binks. But when getting there, she finds that Onaconda has already pledged allegiance to the Separatists and Viceroy Nute Gunray is delivering supplies as the Republic could not before she was arrested.
Naruto continues reading that 3PO had managed to send out a message before being captured. And later, Gunray was going to execute Padmé and 3PO, Jar Jar burst up from the nearby swamp. In the ensuing chaos, Gunray tries to get away, but his shuttle is pushed into the swamp by the monster and Padmé holds him at gunpoint.
Onaconda then appears, having Padmé tell Gunray that Onaconda planned to trap Gunray all along. Onaconda agrees that he is with the Republic, and places Gunray under arrest.
Naruto finishes the report by reading a Republic cruiser arrived with reinforcements to take Gunray away.
Naruto then got up from his seat and started to walk out to the main room and looked at Thrawn. "Have we made contact with the Tranquility?"
"Yes, sir," Thrawn said as he had his arms behind his back.
"OK, prep the transport ship. Barriss here?" Naruto asked as Luminara had asked him to allow Barriss to join on this mission while Zule had time off.
"Yes, she's on the ship now."
"OK, be ready for any rescue both for us or for Gunray if we call," Naruto said as Thrawn nodded.
"Of course sir," Thrawn replied as Naruto and BD walked to a transport ship where they saw Barriss, as well as two clones, walking in.
They then flew out and after several minutes, came to the front of another Star Destroyer.
"Can we talk to them?"
"Yes General." The first clone said having a screen turn on showing three men.
All of them are wearing armor similar to the Phase I battle armor of the clones. The armor also featured an enlarged left pauldron and they're blue colored.
"Captain Argyus, we're coming into land."
"You're cleared, General." The man in the middle said missing his visor showing amber eyes and Caucasian skin.
They then walked in with three of Naruto's clone troopers with Gunray who was handcuffed. They then walked up to the men from the screen, with the one Naruto talked to holding his helmet showing blonde hair.
"Greetings General, we've prepped the holding cell."
"Good, get our guest settled there Captain Breaker," Naruto said to the clone behind him who nodded.
"Understood sir." Breaker said before taking Gunray to the cell.
"Why do we need Senate Commandos?" Barriss asked as they walked down the hall. "He doesn't look that dangerous."
"Never underestimate your adversary, Barriss. And it's not for him. But who the Separatists may send to try and free him."
"Understood Naruto." The Padawan replied as they continued down the hall.
Count Dooku's Ship.
Dooku was kneeling in front of a hologram of Sidious who spoke. "Gunray's capture is a serious threat to us. The Viceroy's will not last long under Jedi interrogation."
"I've already put a plan into action. My best agent Asajj Ventress will infiltrate the Jedi ship, and save him, or silence him." Dooku replied, having Sidious sigh.
"Ventress? You are putting a great deal of faith in an operative who has failed us in the past."
"She is a gifted assassin, you have my word. She will complete her mission to the letter."
"Very well, you may proceed." Sidious finished before the hologram turned off.
Dooku stood up as the doors behind him opened showing Ventress without her dress walking in. "Master."
"There is no margin for error, this time, child. You must prove yourself worthy of me, my apprentice."
"I am worthy, as you shall see."
Maelstrom.
Naruto and Barriss stood in front of Gunray who was in a cell at a table. "Tell me everything you know."
"I know nothing, Jedi."
Naruto sighed before pulling the alien to him over the table and had his shoto turn on at his neck. "How about now? I'm not like other Jedi, I have no qualms about having you die."
"OK, OK!"
Naruto threw him back before Barriss spoke in a whisper. "Naruto, Jedi don't use intimidation."
"He doesn't know that," Naruto replied as the alien started to talk before the ship shook before alarms went off.
As the Jedi was with Gunray, the Confederate boarding party arrived. With Vulture droids attacking the Star Destroyer. Three Confederate boarding ships breached the hull of the ship and lodged themselves in the Star Destroyer near its hangar bays. The troopers arrived and took cover behind several crates from the battle droids that were being deployed from the boarding craft.
In the ensuing crossfire, the droids attacked the over-matched clones with lasers and, in the case of super battle droids, rockets. The advance clone forces were subsequently defeated. Ventress emerged from one of the boarding ships and quickly stole an arm comlink. Ventress then cuts a hole in one of the vents in the ceiling of the hangar with her lightsabers and proceeds to the engine room.
The Dark Acolyte was able to slip past a Treadwell droid that was inspecting the area, and plant several thermal detonators around the Star Destroyer's main reactors before escaping and heading to the detention level to personally confront the viceroy's captors.
Up ahead, Naruto looked to the Padawan. "Stay here and guard Gunray."
"Got it."
Naruto, BD, and Breaker went to assist the clone troopers in fighting the droids. Elsewhere, super battle droids marched through one of the Star Destroyer's hallways, engaging six troopers. The troopers' numbers were cut in half, but they were saved by the arrival of Naruto and Breaker. The Jedi and the troopers attacked the battle droids and eventually defeated their opponents, leaving the hallway ridden with fallen battle droids.
"I don't think that was all of it," Naruto said looking at the droids as BD looked over his shoulder.
"(Trills.)"
Up at the cells, Argyus received word that the enemy had been repelled and walked to Barriss. "Padawan Offee, may I have a word?"
"Of course," Barriss replied walking over.
Suddenly, Ventress cut a hole in the detention level's ceiling and knocked the two Senate Commandos manning the control station unconscious. The Dark Jedi then confronted the Padawan, and the two engaged in a lightsaber duel.
Down the ship, while the pair fought, Naruto overheard the lightsaber clashes and quickly headed back for the detention block with Breaker and the remaining clones. Barriss called for Argyus and the other Senate Commandos to open fire on Ventress, but the Dark Acolyte deflected and rebounded the lasers, killing all of the Commandos save for Argyus.
The Senate Commando captain himself blocked the reflected shots with his shoulder armor, but Ventress attacked him and Force-pushed him toward the control station, knocking him unconscious. Breaking away from dueling Barriss, Ventress proceeded to deactivate the laser gate of Gunray's cell. As the Padawan arrived at the viceroy, Ventress kicked her into the detention cell.
Gunray quickly stepped out and reactivated the lasers, trapping Barriss. Nevertheless, Naruto arrived at the detention blocks with the clone troopers. "Aw, I'm a little glad it was you," Naruto said as Ventress smirked.
"As am I."
Running to engage Ventress, the Jedi Knight also telekinetically deactivated the laser bars of the cell. Ventress dueled both Jedi at once. Gonna surrender?"
Ventress just activated the explosives planted in the engine room.
BOOM!
The ship shook under the resulting blast, and as everyone in the room lost their balance, Ventress took the opportunity to Force-push Naruto to the ground. He rolled aside, avoiding several lightsaber slashes aimed at his head.
Although the clone troopers opened fire at the Dark Acolyte, Ventress jumped over them and opened a turbo-lift shaft door with the Force. The Dark Acolyte escaped, plunging her lightsabers into the side of the turbo-lift shaft to control her descent. Checking the Star Destroyer's sensors and controls, Argyus reported that all systems, including communications, had been disabled from the explosives.
While Gunray was taken back to his cell, Naruto decided to face Ventress alone.
"Naruto wait!"
"I'll be fine Barriss, she can't resist my charm." Naruto
Following a trail of fallen clone troopers that the Dark Acolyte had left in her wake, Naruto arrived in the engine room. After the Jedi had entered the room, Ventress appeared and slashed at him, diffusing a pipe and injuring Naruto's eye.
"AAH!"
Naruto then had BD shoot a stim and stuck his neck before steam started coming off his face and he looked at Ventress, his red eye started healing. The Jedi backflipped onto another reactor with Ventress in pursuit.
While the two exchanged blows, Naruto looked at the assassin. "Don't suppose I could have you switch sides?"
"Tempting. Very tempting."
Ventress jumped toward Naruto, and the two continued their fight with renewed force. As the lightsaber battle continued through the reactor room, Ventress and Naruto employed Force-pushes against each other. After a few moments, both the Jedi and Dark Acolyte released the energy and were pushed backward.
Naruto gained his footing and jumped over Ventress, aiming several lightsaber blows before landing behind her. The pair turned back around to face each other, and Ventress lunged at Naruto, but instead of slashing at him, she kicked Naruto off the reactor to the floor far below. As he fell, Ventress jumped up and detached several fuel pipes from the ceiling.
Naruto tries to use the Force to avoid being crushed by the resulting falling debris, but his leg gets caught under one of the pipes. Taking advantage, Ventress leaped to kill the Jedi, lightsabers spinning. However, Barriss arrived in time to Force-push Ventress into an open pipe.
The Padawan freed Naruto as Ventress climbed out of the pipe and, making use of Dooku's training to duel more than one Jedi at once, engaged the two Jedi in simultaneous lightsaber combat. Ventress eventually ascended the large reactors and disappeared.
"Damn, we gotta stop her," Naruto said as the two jumped up and searched for Ventress, but the Separatist agent instead used her stolen comlink to secretly signal someone to free the viceroy.
At the cells, Argyus then turned and killed his men before Breaker turned around.
"What are you doing?!"
Argyus then shot at the clone forcing him to hide behind a beam as he released Gunray and pulled him out.
"No, no, I'll pay you!"
"Shut up! Count Dooku's paying me a fortune for your carcass, so do stay alive."
Back with Naruto and Barriss, they saw the tread droid stuck before freeing him. "Get to the escape pods 327-T." The droid beeps before rolling away. "Stay alert."
"General, Argyus is helping Gunray escape!" Breaker yelled over the comms as Naruto sighed.
"And it keeps piling on." They then started to run before Naruto turned to slice a pipe that was thrown at them.
The two then held their sabers up as Ventress dropped down. They then continued their duel, engaging Ventress in a saber lock.
Up ahead, Breaker shot Argyus's blaster out of his hand.
"Surrender." The clone ordered before the captain shoved Gunray at the trooper. Breaker pushed the viceroy aside, and Argyus used the clone's momentary distraction to kick his blaster out of his hand and his helmet off. As Breaker confronted Argyus concerning his loyalty to the Republic, the captain then quickly pulled out a knife and sliced the commander's eyes.
"AAH!"
Back in the engine room, the two Jedi took turns advancing at Ventress, forcing the Dark Acolyte to give ground. The two Jedi cut through the debris that the Separatist agent Force-pushed at them, and the Jedi Knight rebounded the last piece back at Ventress. The Dark Acolyte Force jumped, avoiding the projectile, and charged at the pair again.
As the duel continued, Argyus signaled Ventress with his comlink that Gunray had been freed. The Dark Acolyte broke off from her fight with the Jedi and jumped up, propelling herself off a reactor into an overlooking air vent. When they followed, Ventress threw a thermal detonator back at the reactor and escaped as the explosive detonated.
Barriss fell off the walkway of the engine room, but Naruto caught her and managed to pull her back up.
Up at the hangar, Argyus and Gunray escaped in the Consular-class cruiser docked in the lower hangar, while Ventress disposed of two clone troopers guarding the Star Destroyer's escape pods. Stealing a pod for herself, Ventress departed the ship, and the Jedi arrived too late to prevent her from escaping. With the Star Destroyer still crippled, the Jedi could only watch from one of the Tranquility's viewport windows as the Separatist agents fled with the newly liberated Viceroy Gunray.
They then left to let Yoda know of the situation. "Sir, Breaker has been blinded." Naruto heard over his comms.
"Damn, OK, take him to Bones, we'll get him looked at to see if he can do anything or I'll pay for cybernetic replacements."
"Roger sir."
Ventress.
Ventress docked and walked into the cockpit of the ship and walked up as Argyus was talking about how he'll be paid before Ventress stabbed him through the chair. "Greetings Viceroy," Ventress said as she pulled the dead commando away.
"I always had a good feeling about you assassin," Gunray said standing up scared she was going to kill him instead.
Viceroy Gunray escapes! En route to Coruscant to stand trial for war crimes, evil Separatist leader Nute Gunray has broken free of his Jedi escort. With the help of Count Dooku's sinister agents, the villainous viceroy has made a daring getaway. Alerted to the bold prison break, Jedi Master Kit Fisto has traced the stolen ship to a remote system.
He meets up with not only his newly promoted Padawan, Nahdar Vebb, but Naruto and his Padawan, Zule Xiss as well hoping to recapture Gunray and return him to justice.…
Vassek System, Planet Of Vassek.
Kit Fisto in his Delta-7 came out of hyperspace via a ring he was attached to before unhooking and flew towards the moon he stopped by. Landing on a stone platform, the Master saw he was surrounded by thick fog before stepping out before his astromech droid beeped.
"You'll be fine, R6, just keep a lookout for me, OK?" Kit asked before taking steps forward before coming to Naruto, Zule, clones, and a man in a hooded cloak beside a shuttle ship. "Nahdar! Congratulations on completing the trials… I'm sorry the war prevented me from seeing your training through to the end."
"You were missed, Master," Nahdar said, taking his hood off showing he was a fish-like alien. "But it's an honor to serve beside you as a Knight."
Naruto turned to his Padawan and tapped her on the shoulder. "Why can't you be like that?"
"Because he actually likes his Master."
"Always right through the heart Zule."
"Generals." The clone Captain said with grey on his armor. "We've pinpointed the beacon at the South end of the gorge."
"Allow me to show the way Master," Nahdar said before dropping his cloak revealing his tan and white robes, turned and threw his hands up pushing the fog away, and revealed a large door carved in the mountain.
"Good job. Let's not keep the Viceroy waiting." Kit said as they all started walking in the door.
"Bel, Niner, stay here with the ship just in case someone stops by or we need a quick escape," Naruto said to two of the clones who nodded.
"Yes, sir!" As they walked to the unguarded door, BD scanned it as he and Naruto came up to it. "What's this?" He asked as BD beeped telling him he scanned a hidden switch.
Naruto pressed a carving and it was pushed in having a regular size square door open up, having them walk in. Naruto turned on his saber and lit the dark hall up as BD turned his light on as well. "Something feels off," Naruto said before they heard a screech. "Gotta be protecting Gunray or he wouldn't be caught dead in here, he's too much of a coward."
"Don't underestimate your opponent Master," Zule said as Naruto sighed.
"I'm regretting teaching you now."
"You know you love me, Master."
They then walked down the hall to a room where they heard Gunray talking to droids from a seat that had it's back to them. They walked in and quickly took out the droids before turning the seat around and revealed a hologram of Gunray sitting instead before it went off.
"They set a trap," Naruto said, seeing the beacon they followed in the seat.
"I apologize for the deception, Master Jedi."
They looked to see Dooku was in the chair now via hologram. "You have a great talent for unexpected appearances."
"It's a shame you came so far only to be frustrated. I'll offer you an alternative prize…" Dooku finished before a beacon went off.
"Looks like we're the bait to lure someone," Zule said, crossing her arms.
Nahdar then hit the blinking button, having another door open up before they walked down the hall. As the Jedi and clones walked through the castle, rooms opened along the way; inside the rooms were statues of Kaleesh warriors, some featuring cybernetics that resembled Grievous. The group finally entered a secret armory and workshop and saw that it belonged to Grievous as there were multiple masks of his around the room.
While inspecting Grievous' room, Fisto received a report from Bel and Niner that Grievous' personal starfighter was approaching the castle. Fisto ordered the two clones protecting the shuttle to keep out of sight, while the Republic infiltrators decided to capture Grievous in an attempt to satisfy the "dead or alive" warrant on the Confederate general.
Later, as Grievous entered his castle, the Jedi and clones appeared and surrounded the cyborg general.
"Welcome home, General." Kit said as he was in front of the cyborg. "I'm afraid I'll have to ask for your surrender. Cooperate and maybe the Senate will be merciful."
"You shall get no mercy!"
Grievous yelled and activated two of his stolen Jedi lightsabers, and engaged Fisto and Vebb in combat. However, as the two Jedi sabers locked with the general, Grievous split his arms and activated two more of his lightsabers. Naruto jumped over and held one arm as Zule did the same to the other. "Fire your cables at Grievous!" Kit ordered the clones who aimed their grappling hooks at the general's legs.
As Grievous engaged the Jedi in another saber lock, Fisto used his lightsaber to sever the cyborg's legs. Although crippled, Grievous was able to jump up and hold onto one of the beams attached to the roof. The clones' grappling hooks were still attached to the general, and the troops were able to pull Grievous to the ground.
Vebb crossed blades with the cyborg, the lightsaber that Grievous was holding spun out of his hand. The general jumped back up, and one of the clones holding the grappling hooks was thrown backward, while the other was pulled toward Grievous. The general batted the dead clone against Fisto, forcing the Jedi Master backward, before throwing the trooper on top of Vebb.
Grievous' faceplate was damaged from one of the clones' laser shots, and as the general escaped, Vebb and several of the troopers gave pursuit. However, Grievous killed two more of the clones before entering the castle's secret command center. Once inside, Grievous reactivated his MagnaGuard droid bodyguards and ordered them to lock down the perimeter.
With the others, the floor suddenly gave way revealing a molten incinerator pit before the Jedi jumped over and Naruto turned to use the Force to catch the clone who didn't act in time, having his legs from the knees down get hit. "AAH!"
Naruto pulled the clone up and had BD throw out a stim and stuck him. "Zule, get him to the shuttle, now."
"On it, Master." Zule had the clone's arm over her shoulder and walked him outside.
There she saw a MagnaGuard droid about to blow their shuttle up before using the Force to throw it and several others off the platform to fall into the fog.
Back inside, a door opened up and the Jedi and clone looked as a large beast walked out. It has a pair of curving horns growing from the sides of its head. It also has a long tail and thick skin.
As the Jedi and the clone trooper grouped in the middle of a hallway junction, Gor appeared and approached the group. Fil opened fire on the roggwart, but Fisto's lightsaber was knocked out of his hand. Gor lunged at Fil and the two Jedi and the three quickly split up, surrounding the creature while Fisto retrieved his weapon.
The clone commander directed blaster fire at Gor's neck and Vebb jumped onto the roggwart, plunging his lightsaber into Gor's back until he was bucked off. The roggwart swung its tail and seized Fil, batting Vebb with the captured clone. Fisto slashed the roggwart in the head and Naruto sliced his tail dropping Fil to the ground who groaned.
"BD," Naruto said as BD scanned the clone. "Broken arm, and several ribs." Snapping his fingers, BD shot a stim in the air having Naruto catch it and stuck Fil.
Naruto looked to see Vebb severed the creature's tail. The Jedi Master cut off the roggwart's arms, and as Gor fell to the ground, Fisto killed the roggwart by driving his lightsaber into the back of the creature's neck. "Get to the shuttle, Fil, you're no good to us injured."
"Why do that?" Nahdar asked his fellow Knight.
"They're trusting us with their lives. Their safety and lives of those under our command are more important and Grievous isn't going anywhere during this war."
They all then snuck up to the entrance to the command center and the Jedi Master tried to figure out the secret mechanism that opened the door. Vebb then decided to remain outside of the command center and fight Grievous himself, despite Fisto's protest. Before the Jedi Master could convince Vebb otherwise, the door closed, separating Naruto and Kit from Nahdar.
Inside with Nahdar, he quickly eliminated the three MagnaGuards but turned to see Grievous with two more of his droid bodyguards. "I've been waiting for this!"
After eliminating the remaining MagnaGuards, Vebb engaged the general in lightsaber combat. Inside the control room, Fisto watched as Vebb and Grievous engaged in a saber lock. The general took out a blaster with one of his extra arms and shot Nahdar to his knees then beheaded him before stealing his lightsaber. "No…"
"Come on, we gotta go," Naruto said to the Master pulling him away from the screen.
They then walked out to the shuttle before Grievous dropped down and confronted the Jedi. But, taking advantage of the moon's foggy atmosphere, the Jedi disappeared into the mist. A confused Grievous spun his lightsabers in a defensive maneuver, and Fisto attacked the general from behind. The two blades locked once more, and Grievous pushed Fisto backward, slashing at the Jedi Master.
Fisto was able to avoid the blow, and as he ran forward he severed the hand of the cyborg that held Vebb's lightsaber. Catching the weapon of his former Padawan, the Jedi Master used the two lightsabers in combat against his opponent.
Naruto jumped out and sliced at Grievous who turned a blade at him. Kit landed a blow on the general and Force-pushed Grievous to the ground. However, as the cyborg got to his feet and continued the duel, three of the general's MagnaGuards appeared and advanced toward the Jedi.
"I got 'em!" Naruto yelled dashing to the droids and attacked with his saber hitting a staff.
He then spun his shoto to hit them from the back as he turned it in mid-air. With the Jedi Master surrounded and outnumbered, the general ordered Fisto to surrender. However, Kit's droid, R6 piloted Fisto's fighter to rise to the platform. Fisto backflipped onto his fighter. Naruto then Force pushed Grievous away and got into the shuttle as it started to take off as well.
Coruscant.
Fisto returned to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and reported the mission to Masters Yoda and Mace Windu of the Jedi High Council. He also explained Naruto was with the injured clones after finding out the one he saved had lost his legs to pay for replacements.
