Lucy stared at the little flutter on the screen in front of her as she listened to the heartbeat. Tears began to fill her eyes as she stared at the fetus in front of her. Suddenly this entire pregnancy felt more real.
10 weeks.
Her doctor had informed her she was 10 weeks along.
"Would you like me to print out some photos for you?" Lucy snapped out of her thoughts at the question.
"Yeah, that would be great. Um, could I also have a video?" Lucy bit her lip as she pulled down her shirt after the ultrasound tech wiped the gel off of her stomach.
"Of course! I will be back in a minute."
This baby existed whether she liked it or not and Lucy was doing a job that put that baby in danger. She had been in a shoot out, fought multiple men bigger than her, and been in many other unsafe situations. The image of her baby from this morning made her wonder if it was worth it. At least for now.
She loved the work she was doing. Loved the adrenaline, the satisfaction of making a difference. She didn't love the fact she was in the most sensitive time in her pregnancy and she was putting her job above her baby. She was torn but at the end of the day she knew as soon as she saw the babies heartbeat she was going to choose it over anything else.
Lucy woke up the next morning and took a little extra time getting ready. She had called Jackson and had a long talk with him about her decision to wash out. She would be able to try again in a year or so. In the meantime she had her psychology degree to fall back on for now.
"Boot why aren't you dressed?" She heard her T.O. Bark. She hesitated before turning around.
"I have a meeting with Gray." She told him with false confidence. She was hoping she wouldn't have to see him. She forgot today was his first day back after she saved him.
"That doesn't answer my question, boot."
"I'm quitting, not that it is any of your business." She felt annoyed. How arrogant could he be. She watched as his jaw set. He was pissed at her. A small part of her was surprised. He wouldn't have to listen to her talk anymore.
"No you're not." He stated matter of factly.
"Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do?"
"Listen, Boo-Lucy," he winced, "You have a lot of potential. I've never trained someone who cares as much as you do. The LAPD needs that. I gotta admit you were the last person I expected to wash out."
"I'm not washing out," she stated. "It's not really a choice for me." She looked down at her hands trying to avoid his eyes. The eyes that unknowingly put her in the situation she was in.
"Everyone has a choice, Lucy."
"Some things are more important than the job, Tim."
"Lucy, I can see you now." Lucy turned to look at Sergeant Gray.
"Goodbye, Tim." With that she turned away from him and followed Gray into his office. Tim didn't see her after that.
POV TIM
"Timothy, your Rookie was missing from roll call this morning." Angela boasted as she leaned back in her chair and took a swig of her beer. He rolled his eyes and took a tip of his own drink.
"Yeah, she washed out. Should have known she was too good to be true."
"What do you mean by that?" Angela questioned.
"Common Angela. My boot was demolishing both your boot and Bishop's boot."
"She tell you why?"
"No, just that some things are more important than the job." Tim finished his beer and stood up to dispose of the bottle. He honestly didn't know why he cared so much. He was used to his Rookies washing out. He had the highest wash out rate. It just bothered him that she was throwing away her career and wouldn't give him an explanation as to why. He hasn't broke her or her spirit, she has fought back and retained her kindness along the way. He wiped his face and grabbed his keys.
"Tim, where are you going. You've been drinking."
"To talk her out of it."
Lucy looked at her body in the mirror and felt a ping of sadness. She never thought she would be in this situation. A single mom with no support. She had her meeting with Gray today. He gave her the day off but he promised her, her job was still there. Accommodations would be made. Her little bump barely visible, but there.
After hearing a knock on her door Lucy quickly got dressed and went to the front door. Who would be dropping by her small apartment this late at night was beyond her.
"Officer Bradford?" She questioned. She watched as he let himself into her small one bedroom apartment. "Yeah make yourself at home," she deadpanned.
"Why? What is more important to you than the job?"
"Why do you care?"
"I don't," he shot back.
"Then why are you here?" The frustration clear on her features. She watched as the look of defeat took over his usually angry features.
"A life."
"A life? You are leaving so you have more time for your friends?"
"No. It's complicated. It's medical. I'm not ready to talk to anyone about it yet, but I did have to inform Gray. I'm not leaving, he talked me out of it, but accommodations are going to have to be made. I'm still your rookie and I'm still going to be out in the field. Gray said I can tell you when I'm ready, but I'm not ready. He is going to discuss the accommodations with you."
"Okay."
"All I get is an okay?"
"Damn Boot why are you so nosy?" He gave her a smile that reminded of the night she met him at the bar. A drunk careless him. "I'll see you tomorrow?" He questioned. Lucy tried to act annoyed but couldn't help but smile.
"Yes, I'll see you tomorrow."
