Chapter 20: Sinhalese, Curiosity, and Animosity?

(DAY ONE) 7:58 pm

Kurama's POV:

"Hey Kurama, have you seen my backpack?" Aisha asks.

"Don't worry; it's right here, though it's still damp." I hand it to her from its original leaning position against the bed.

She unzips a smaller compartment pulling out her gray cellphone, which fails to turn on.

"Damn it…the rain must have killed it..." She mutters, not looking pleased.

"Would you like to use mine?" I inquire and hand over my cellphone.

She nods and utters thanks.

After hearing six or so unanswered rings, I then propose; "You know I can give you a ride home, though in this weather I don't think it would be very safe to leave just yet.

"I think I'll wait, I'm sure she must be sleeping or something." Aisha remarks, trying to smile, but it's clear she's saddened and worried.

"I understand you're concerned, but I'm sure she's alright. Now, why don't we order some food? I'm sure you're famished."

She perks up, and chirps, "That sounds awesome right now, what are ya thinking of getting?"

"Is there something you're craving?"

"Dude, anything would be good right now…though I feel guilty since I don't have any money."

"It's not an issue, it'll be my treat."

She hesitates for a moment, but I convince her it's alright.

As we finish up our pizza, she blurts out; "Damn it! Dulvan probably hasn't eaten anything today."

"Who's Dulvan?"

"He's my youngest sibling. I actually have three of them. He's nearly 2, and he's a picky ass eater. I normally feed him after school, and if I don't, he'll starve himself. He refuses to eat with my mother, and my dad's at work pretty late."

"It sounds like he's more than just a picky eater. He must love you dearly, Aisha. Hopefully, your family has made proper arrangements today. We'll leave as soon as the rain lets up."

^How touching, she is worried about her sibling. Although, her relationship with her parental figures…appears strained. ^

I'm in agreement with the fox. Aisha's behavior overall points to dysfunction in her family. It's evident from her behavior her mental state was previously compromised and totaling in theAnrokku-Isei… will prove to be as perilous as treading on thin ice.

She returns from washing her hands and sits back down at the dining room table, sipping a glass of water.

"Hey, Kurama?"

"Yes, Aisha?"

"Will the others join you too? On your mission now?"

"Koenma has not told me when exactly, but Botan is hopeful they will arrive soon."

"I've also been meaning to ask; just how did you get here?" She questions, curiosity sparkling in her coffee-colored eyes.

"It's a bit of a long story..." I state, staring out the window I note that the rain still hasn't let up.

"Please? Judging from the sound of the rain, I think you have some time to explain. Besides, I'm just going to keep bugging you anyway." She grins, but her eyes expose a primal terror just below the surface.

"Alright…I suppose it wouldn't hurt." I state with a smile. "I'm sure you wish to satisfy your curiosity."

"Hell, yeah I do, just be as descriptive as ya can be. Please don't leave anything out!" She forces out a small, happy laugh.

"I think it would be wise to start from the beginning. Koenma had dropped quite a bombshell on me after…what happened at snack."

For a moment, a flare of fury passes through her eyes, but she remains silent, intent on listening.

"Recall the science department and its various creations? Well one of them happens to be blueprints to creating stabilized portals to other dimensions. This project of theirs had been worked on in secret for about two years, and the blueprints had been stolen a month ago."

"Why does that not surprise me…" Aisha mutters under her breath.

"What do you mean by that?" I question, a little surprised.

"Well, just about everything important seems to get stolen, Koenma's Golden Seal thing, and the stuff you, Hiei, and that creep Goki stole too. Man, Yusuke had it rough getting that shit back ... I still remember Koenma got busted anyway 'cause your blood was on that Demon Zombie Sword and the Forlorn mirror was broken. You'd figure Koenma would have beefed up on security, because of what happened in the past, but I guess not…"

*I don't think I will ever be at ease hearing outsiders talk about my world's occurrences or my personal matters…*

"Actually, Koenma has sufficiently, but his efforts still are in vain. His foes have penetrated his defenses. Whoever broke in this time only had their eyes set on one thing, and they only stole those specific blueprints."

"Not anything else? Wow, that is weird, considering there must be other cool things to jack."

"It is strange, but so far we have no answer as to who took those blueprints. We now know why they took them. Random portals opening up to different dimensions, although a rarity does occur every so often. However, we believe the enemy stole the blueprints in order to add an extra diversion and to conceal their true intentions... And we thought the undead demons were troublesome enough..."

"Zombie... demons...?" Her complexion falters, and her voice trembles slightly.

"Yes, I was informed of this after arriving here in this world."

"Can those demons get through those portals to come here?"

"As of right now no, Koenma sent his forces to Demon World to hold them off, but I'm apprehensive as to how long they can hold their defenses up.…"

"This entire situation sounds like a dumpster fire." She mutters, glaring down at her feet.

"It makes sense to have that impression, but as you know, we've faced dangers like this before and we've managed to subjugate them. We cannot lose hope just yet, Aisha." I reassure her.

"Okay, Kurama. Now, how did you use the portal to get here?" She perks up, forcing a smile once again. "How exactly does it work?"

For a moment I'm taken back, because I can't read her eyes; they only express false cheer.

"Well, using a vast amount of spiritual energy and Koenma's Spirit Shield, he can create a portal to any location, but it requires some time to become stable. However ever since the original blueprints were stolen, the newly created portals are very unstable."

"Wow, but how do you think whoever stole the prints powers their portals?"

"As of right now, I have no clue as to what their power source might be..."

"I mean Koenma's pretty powerful, so whatever their using…probably is strong too…" She mutters and is silent for a few moments after. A troubled expression makes itself evident on her face.

I take a breath and continue, attempting to break her away from her worrisome thoughts. "You know Aisha when I did manage to arrive safely in this world, I was caught off guard. I'd have to say it was bittersweet."

Aisha's face scrunches into confusion but she vocalizes nothing.

"Have you ever heard of the language Sinhalese before?" I question.

Astonishment flickers in her eyes. "Yeah, I do. My parents speak it fluently and I can speak a little bit myself. How do you know about it, Kurama?"

For a second, I'm rendered speechless.

^Now that I am observing her features, she does look to be Sri Lankan. They may have died out in Demon World thousands of years ago, but to think they exist in another realm is fascinating. ^

*I would have never thought I'd see another one again…*

I then say; "Because the first thing I heard when I came into this world was Sinhalese. It's an ancient demon language, that few know of today, I almost couldn't believe my ears."

"Kurama...you're j-joking, right? It's a demon language? No way." Disbelief rings in her voice, but quickly she snaps out of it and decides to test me.

In Sinhalese, she queries me, "Where is my mom, do you know, Kurama?"

I reply, "If I did know you probably wouldn't be here right now, asking me, Aisha."

She stares at me in complete shock and disbelief.

"Oh my god, dude! You speak it perfectly! Hell, way better than I can…That's so cool!" She exclaims, smiling.

"I believe the last time I have spoken this language would have to be over a thousand years ago, Aisha."

"Go, on please." She questions, grinning. "What did you hear these people say?"

"To be honest, the conversation was…disheartening. Not exactly the most pleasant thing to hear after all these years…"

"Well, what was said anyway? Was it really that bad?"

"Let's say, I'd rather not repeat what was stated."

"You're making me seriously curious! What did you hear? There's not a lot of Sri Lankans around here anyway. C'mon, please?" She begs.

"My, aren't you a prying character. It's not of any relevance Aisha."

"But…But…Sinhalese… Please Kurama?" Her pleading look is quite adorable.

"Fine, fine if you must know Ms. Nosy, what I overheard was an older man and woman spewing death threats at one another. I didn't hear the entirety of their screaming match because the blaring screeching of parrots drowned portions out. I don't see why you are so resolute on something-"

Shock, animosity, and wretchedness vibrate in her eyes, and I'm taken back by it. Glancing at her face, I can tell the color is leaving her cheeks.

"O-oh, how interesting…" She stammers, attempting to keep the smile pasted on her face.

"Aisha, are you okay? Is something wrong?" I ask her, and I can't help but be puzzled.

*Why did she react like that? *

She nods, insistent on keeping up the façade of glee. "Oh, I'm fine, so how did you come to see me?" Her eyes state a different story, but I leave it be.

"I spotted you across the street. You had your head down- I'm not sure what drew me to you, but I am glad I kept my gaze on you. Otherwise, you may have met a similar fate to Yusuke's first death."

"A-and I'm thankful, Kurama." She grins, seeming a bit better, but the eyes are the windows to the soul, and she is concealing something.

*Her emotions are all over the place, though there must be a reason as to why she was bothered by what I said…hopefully, I can figure it out soon. The last thing I need is unresolved passive-aggressive tension…*

To be continued...
