chapter 43:Hurt
The camp was busy as usually right now with mainly the soldier and huntsman patroling, recovering from their exhaustion or trying to kill time. But right now in the camp was miyuki as she just finished walking around it with eden. Though she sat in a wheelchair with a small bag connected to her.
"So the city of vale was destroyed?"eden asked
Miyuki paused for a moment sighing"yeah it was a little troubling for that to happen. Its affected everyone everywhere but it'll be fine"miyuki replied
"Yeah though its still weird to hear how people were kidnapped to do expeirments"jae added skipping close by them as the gecko faunus joined them. Along with xander who was monitoring her condition just incase.
Eden immediately shivered slightly hugging herself not wanting to let go."i..i..those experiments are awful…please don't mention them"she begged which made the girl back off quickly.
"Sorry my bad didn't mean to bring up trauma"jae quickly apolgized bowing to her several times.
Miyuki sighed pushing eden through the camp which was hard since it was mostly dirt. But thye'll manage she needed to push slihglty harder.
"Your alright. Just please don't mention it again…it scares me even recalling that stuff"miyuki replied sadly as they wheeled through the camp. But xander noticed something on her wrist, razor scars that looked very old. The wolf quickly figured out whatever they did must have been terrible.
He wanted to press on it but rather not cause further porlbems to ensue. They kept walking around camp for a bit until spotting yuma and ophelia
"So kid how is vacuo this time of year anyway? I haven't visited their in a long time"yuma asked
Opehlia shrugged her shoulder slightly"not that bad if you count the last month of bandits attacks. Along with that local cult in the kingdom"she replied as the bat faunus knew what she meant.
"Those creepy unseen eye guys. Wish your school sent someone to deal with them their messed up"yuma replied firmly as she couldn't agree any more.
"Sup guys. What are you two doing over here"jae asked walking over as they joined them. Mityuki placed eden wheelchair next to the table they were at as she took a seat. Xander did too as they joined in on their conversion.
"Nothing much just talking about how vacuo is this time of year is all"ophelia replied honestly rubbing her sore arm still. She might have another couple days to recovery from her injuries till shes in fighting shape.
"Really? I've never been to vacuo before. The only places i've ever been in is well vale"miyuki replied
"Wait so you never traveled to any of the other kingdoms?"yuma asked surprised slightly he been all around actually from his previous career choice.
"Not everyone has enough money to travel all over the kingdoms. But if i would i'd visit atlas."jae said starry eyed slightly.
Yuma huffed hearing that"kid i understand that flying city amazing. But i hate that contiennt since its home the most hated person in faunus kind"yuma didn't even have to say his name because they all knew.
"Jacque schnee"all said in unison as he snapped his fingers at that. They all just began to become engrossed in a deep discussion right now. But as they did xander kept glancing over toward the weapon smithing area. He kept starting at DJ who was hard at work fixing up some weapons with mulberrys help.
The young wolf just felt guilty seeing him like that right now. Because he took his ability to walk resulting in him to get porthsetics. It didn't do his conscious pretty good because he feels guilty about getting ben involved. He knows his parents live in menagerie, when he gets their he hopes they don't hate him.
As he stared at him soon enough someone flicked his ears as he held them. It made him jump slightly from the person who did it.
"Yo wolf ears you good over their. You keep staring over at the forge over their alot"yuma asked as this got all their attention. Xander just layed his head down with an upset look across his face.
"Hes right plus you look pretty upset. Do you know those two over their or something?"eden asked softly
Xander messed with the gold feather necklace for a bit"oh um you can kinda say i know that DJ guy"he replied sheepishly looking away avoiding their gazes.
"Really? Then why don't you go over then and say hi to him. Did he know your parents or something"ophelia asked as she just examined his mannerisms for a bit. Because how hes acting he looks guilty about something.
Jae tail whipped around for a bit"ummm for starters he doesn't really know his dad persay"jae said trying to find the words to clear it up. But soon enough xander just relented as he spoke up, because they'll keep pressing him.
"Alright…look uh you know how he has prosthetic legs right?"xander asked as they all nodded.
"Yeah the guy said he lost them during some robbery. Saw a news article a while back saying his store got robbed by white fang. One of them shot and…crippled him"ophelia said but relazied what he was implying. Xander nodded as he held his head.
"I was the one who took an innocent mans ability to walk…i…i'm sure he wants me dead"xander sadly said as his ears flopped over. It was one of the other main reason he left the white fang the guilt of crippling that poor man.
Yuma sighed patting the kid shoulder"i know kid. You told it was one of the reason you wanted to elave. But uh.."yuma begun before glanicng over at the forge for a secon.d
Because right now DJ was laughing sharing a drink with mulberry as the two completed their quota for today weapons. The two weaponsmiths seem to be bonding over it and enjoying themselves. The bat faunus just sighed.
"But that guy doens't seem to bother with having those metal legs now"yuma added
"Hes right doing better than my other teammate back in vacuo at least. Poor guy heartbroken about losing his legs"opehlia saldy replied
"Oh right that may chick friend is it really that bad?"jae aksed interested slightly. Opehlia just froze up slightly as she sighed leaning her one good arm against her cheek thinking how to respond.
"For starters it kinda is. Guy get too scared to even walk on both his legs at time. Keeps thinking that thing is hunting him down right now"opehlia stated but miyuki knew that thing might be hunting her down.
"That upsetting though…why don't you just go talk to him kid."yuma suggested making xander immediately close up at the thought of that. Because he might recognize his voice.
"I..i don't know…he's probably really depressed still about his leg i–"but he was stopped as eden scootched over slightly grabbing his hand as he looked at her. The bag slightly moved but jae quickly grabbed it making sure it didn't disconnect.
"Look just go talk to him. I know you ahven't known me long. But its better to try and tell him your sorry. It might help with yoru guilt"eden wisly said a sthe wolf thought for a moment before nodding. Quickly getting up he made his way over to the forge.
While he did DJ was in the process of sharpening a large axe in hand. The man scraped hard against it as sparks flew off it. Mulberry just took a swig of his coffee to keep awake right now. But as he did he noticed the wolf approaching them.
"Hey your one of those survivors that was resuced. You need something kid?"mulberry aksed leaning agains the counter. DJ glanced up as he finished sharpening the axe in hand as he stowed it in nearby weapons rack. He hoped up crakcing his back stretching as he walked over to join mulberry as he leaned slightly lopped sided which xander noticed.
"Yeah you got a weapon in need of fixing or do you wanna use the forge?"DJ added
Xander ears tiwtched as he worked up the courage to talk"uh no just uh wondering something. You seem to be leaning more to the right. It your metal leg working alright?"he asked
The guy was caught offguard slightly but he hoped over the counter. Then he sat atop it pulling his right pant leg up to reveal his leg. It revealed that his right knee had a pretty bad bruises on it. While the lower part past that was metal.
"Nah just bruised my knee is all. Pain in the butt but i'll live"DJ replied waving his hand.
Though xander just thought of something reaching into his pouch pulling out a small container. Then he put some of ontinment on his hand for a moment to the two confusion.
"Well maybe you should put something on that to speed up the healing process. Also maybe prop your leg up for a bit"xander said a she looked at him for permission to put it on. He gave a nod to do it as the wolf gently applied the ontinment.
DJ gave a relaxed sigh"alright that actually feels pretty good…you've been working with those doc here right?"he asked as xnader nodded as he finished applying the ontinemnt. Then Dj ulled his pant leg down.
"Yeah though umm i'm xander and you are.."xander said offering a hand as the man took it shaking it.
"DJ owner of a weapon store in city that got desotyed by now. But i'm making a living still"DJ replied as he nodded then soon enough xander lost the courage to say sorry. He immediately left the two retreating to the others but as he did the two forge master stared him down.
"So you think that kid gonna confront yah about taking your ability to walk yet?"mulberry asked
DJ shrugged his shoulder as he conitneud to work on another weapon"who knows surprised to see him here though. But bright side that kid seemed to relaized his mistake. Now he gotta own up to it"he said as they continued to work on their weapons for the day. The weapon store owner seemed to not hate the kid who took his legs.
About a couple hours later inside the medical tent zane kept tossing and turning for a bit in his sleep. Until eventually he shot up gasping for air panting as swet beated down his bodie. He didn't know where he was as he felt himself all over seeing he was still their.
"Oh thank remnant…stupid nightmares….why is my head so messed up"zane said to himself.
"I don't know young man. But are you doing alright mentally?"merlot spoke up making him jump slightly seeing him their. Along with that peach was close by as she was just finishing up with some patients close by.
"Umm i..i'm fine just a little tired is all from sleeping on the ground"zane replied slipping his little mask back on. He rather not have people start treating him differently after the tragedy he helped cause
Peach was just finshing up stelizing some equipment as she placed it in a tray. She walked over carrying a smalllgiht. Then without warning she clicked it a few times in his eyes as it slightly irritated him. The medical professor was soon done as she placed it on the side.
"What the heck was shining a flashlight in my eyes for?"zane asked very irritated as his black buldged slightly with small hisses being head.
"Nothing just wanting to see how your reacting. Early when you all came back from that mindscape. You all seemed to be quite a fright"peach said but he forze slightly reazlinng something. They all saw the day he got the spine scar which scared him a little.
"Oh uh just saw something messed up is all. Anywho wheres everyone else right now?"zane asked quickly sitting up feeling slightly well rested. But as he got up merlot placed a hand on his shoulder making him sit down.
"Young man the others are still on patrol while the rest of your friends are around the base. "Merlot answered
"Yes though dear have you been sleeping alright. Because you seem to be suffering from sleep deprivation judging by those bags under your eyes"peach asked since the bag under his eyes were slightly worse.
Zane pulled his hood up to cover his face"i'm fine…just have a few of the stupid lab nightmares. I can handle them like i did before."he said before exhaling as he thought his next words carefully.
"Sleeping on the dirt makes it hard is all"he added as he fidgeted slightly which merlot noticed. He wanted to press him but from how hes acting he seemed to very weary of doctor sighed standing up as he walked over to a nearby table.
"That is quite alright when the captain comes back will talk to him about letting you sleep in the barracks maybe. "Melrot stated as he voiced his objection against that.
"I'll be fine in the cell for another day…we haven't gotten rid of those mental suggestion."zane argued
Peach sighed rubbing her temple for a moment"dear you need proper rest for starters watts isn't here so your safe."she said but he visible flinched hearing his name tightening his grip on the sheats on the cot. He took a few slow breath to calm himself down hearing his name.
Merlot noticed this as he grabbed a tray bringing it out"it seems your reacting to his name now. I'm not surprised that madman and his son are monsters"he spat with venom. This made zane think about the so called son of arthur watts.
"Oh you scar…i got a question for you. Those metal hands of his how'd he lose em?"zane asked with slight anger
"Hmm his son lost them in a lab accidnet if i recall. About three years ago him along with dorian were conducting experiments on some grimm. One of them got loose tearing off both his hands in the process. But he didn't seem to mind"merlot answered
This just confirmed his suspicious he lied to him from the start. Next time he see him he'll pay for using him to achieve their goals. Zane scoffed as he declared something.
"Really? Lying little brat next time i see him i'm tearing off his metal hands"zane said with a serious expression which worried merlot slightly. But at least it wasn;t him resorting to murder. The man soon layed the tray infront of him which was some food it seems.
"I'm sure your hunger right now why don't you eat something"merlot said gesturing to the tray of food before him. That being some bread, soup along with some fruit with a small bottle ot tea. Zane eyed it for a moment pushing it away.
"Nah i'm not hunger…i'll just be heading out and get some training in"zane stood up but as he did peach stopped him. The women dragged him making him sit down in the cot as she crossed her arms glaring at him.
"From what i heard you haven't been served food from the canteen here. You need to recover i already gave you an aura booster to bring your aura up. But you need to eat something"peach ordered as he was about to argue. But his stomach rumbled loudly as he held his stomach in pain.
The two waited for him to eat a she relented picking up his utensil digging into his meal. It wasn't the best food but their was a pit in his stomach right now. He didn't feel hunger but he felt very sick, probably because of what he did. He ate the lunch provided to him until ifnhsing it satisfying the two it seems.
Peach took the tray then clapped her hands together"alright since that done i suggest you maybe get some rest. though i'm sure you'd like to check on your friends"peach said knowingly.
"Yeah though uh don't i have to wear that"he asked pointing toward the collar on the table as he looked at it with fear. Soon enough someone spoke up to relieve him of that stress
"Don't kid you aint wearing it. I'll be keeping an eye on you while you roam around camp"nezumi spoke up entering the tent with some of her soldier close by with their weapons at the ready.
"Ma'am in my opinion we should just put the collar on him"a soldier voiced thier objection but she ignroed it immediately.
"Although come on kid pretty sure you wanna get some training in or whatever. Maybe talk to your friends their due to arrive any time soon"nezumi said gesturing for him to follow her. Zane got up from his cot as he did just that following the women outside to the base.
Though once outside something was apparent that some of the soldiers and huntsman he passed by eyed him. All of them had their hands close to their weapons for easy access which made him feel very nervous right now. He knows everyone hates him right now he just wants to get to menagerie to check on his teammate and family.
"So uhh are you sure it fine if i don't have a collar…everyone might think i'm here to kill them"zane meekly asked
Nezumi shook her head"it'll be fine kid told them i'd keep an eye on you. Besides you need to relax for a bit. It helps with stress"She said eyeing him wondering if he'll be okay. She didn't really start caring about the kid up until she saw that memory play out. It made her upset seeing a child be put through that.
Before he could argue soon enough she led him to where some others were. That mainly being xander, vance, coco and nebula. The four were in a deep discussion it seems as they hunged around for a bit.
"So when do you think the others will be back?"xander asked
Vance shrugged his shoulder as he twirled his knife"don't know it might be a while since they gotta navigate though the city to avoid the grimm. "He replied
"Yeah though i hope my gwenny okay out their. I rather not lose her"nebula said smiling as the lynx got a teasin look.
"Aww are you worried your girlfriend will get lose in the big city."vance teased making the girl slightly blush as she swatted at him making him snicker slightly.
"Funny though whats up grimm boy. Finally woke up from your long nap"coco said getting their attention as he sat down. But the guards flanked him close by as he just looked aay aoviidng their gazes.
"Oh uh pretty good felt nice to sleep in a bed for a bit"zane quietly said but they heard him. An awkward silence formed for a moment as they didn't know what to say. Because some of them were still very shocked at what they saw early. Vance really wanted to ask if hes okay and if he wants to talk about it. But didn't wanna risk causing him to have a panic attack.
"Soo what are you going to do?"nebula asked looking at zane who stared at her very confused by taht question.
"What are you talking about?"he asked as the girl smacked her face for a moment.
"I mean what are you gonna do to apolgize to your teammates including your other girl"nebula asked the obvious question to divert the topic. Xander eyes widden slightly as he eyed the two for a moment because he really hoped he won't hear him do something weird.
"Oh right that wolf chick will be pretty pissed after seeing that video you sent"coco reminded which hit a very sour spot as he looked down.
"Right…guess i'm never going to see her smile again. Twins will probably wanna beat me up"zane saldy answered as they tried to make a more positive atmosphere.
"Come on kid quit being moopy. Its like we traded you in for your cousin"nezumi jabbed as the lynx groaned because he wasn't that moppy. But others had a different opinion on that matter.
"She right. Heck maybe you could gift her something or whatever"nebula stated as she decided to do something. She dug through her pouches for a bit until pulling something out one of gwens knives.
"Whats with the knife?"xander questioned
"Let me guess its a little sourvenrir from your girlfriend"coco teased as the girl simpy chuckled.
"You can say that. We started daying two years ago but uh on our one year anniversary."nebula begun as she smiled remeebring why she has the knife.
"we both forgot and when we expected gifts from each other. I gift her one of my bolts and she gives me one of her knives. We both just laughed at each others little gestures appercaitng them."nebula finished as he took the words in for a moment he already brining his brother back.
But he quickly thought of someone else her dad, he seemed to care about his kids deeply. Next time he see him he might be mad at him for making is daughter cry which he regretted deeply. It hurt his heart thinking he did that too her.
"Hmm maybe your right though question xan. Your dad likes swords right?"zane asked confusing them
Xadner ears twitched slightly"uhh yeah my dad likes hunting and swords…why?"he asked
"For starters uh i'm pretty sure he'll snap me in two next time he sees me. Maybe a peace offering will spare me"zane joked slightly with a small forced smile.
"Oh forgot about that. You could but uh you could also bring that charred skeleton back to him"nezumi said which got their attention confusing them slightly. Because that skeleton belong to the sabyr knight.
"Why should he bring back some dead guys bones?"coco questioned slipping her shades down slightly eyeing her.
Nezumi sighed"well for starters that dead guy was diego taupe guy was on his team"she said this made xander eyes sink into his skull hearing that name.
"Wait…u-uncle diego…but..but he died eight years ago on a mission."xander siad in shock right now as some of them recalled the memory they saw.
"That sabyr guy? Wait are you saying that his death might have been faked"nebula asked
"Maybe that file we have had his name on it. Along with that several huntsman and huntresses claimed to know him"nezumi replied
Xander eyes watered up slightly hearing his so called uncle was actually alive but nows he dead again. He layed his head down crying which surprised them. But vance just patted his back for him to get it out.
"Its alright you didn't expect him to be alive. Sorry for your loss"vance sadly said
Nezumi just felt guilty now for even killing that man, he looked so broken before she delivered her justice. She was mad he took her two friends but seeing that he didn't have control, it upsetted her.
Xander soon composed himself wiping the tears away"c-could you let us take his bodie to menagerie. M-my dad and his family would like to have a proper burial."he begged
"Aint my call, that for the captain to decide. Sorry"nezumi said to the wolf annoyance as he sat their. But zane thought about some things he could do that would be bringing the guy who watched out for him bodie back. Along with making something in the forge later.
"Well uh i'll probably head to the forge in a bit. Maybe work on something"zane said as he tried to come up with something to make. They all decided to wait for when the others will arrive back from their patrols.
Soon two of three patrols arrived back at base as it was picto and his group while leon group reutnred as well. Once inside some people came taking the injured soilder to the medical tent. Along with octavia and leon joining them. Glynda walked over to greet them.
"Your all back i take it things went well?"glynd asked
"A little we found the two missing patrols at the fairgound"port paused looking at picto for a moment closing his eyes.
"Five of them were killed, those seven are whats remains"port added as the captain held his head for a moment rubbing his eyes.
"That'll do we'll send a retrieval team for what remains of the others. Did you grab their dog tags?"picto asked as may dug through her pouch presenting them.
"Here they are we thought you might want em"may replied handing him them as he pocketed them.
"How'd thing go on end?"naca aksed
"Uhh they used me as bait to help take down a teryx. But we took some grimm out"earl replied actually annoyed he was a chew toy.
Dew chuckled" well on our end we eliminated most of the grimm. But we didn't come out unscatched."she replied
"What happened?"nebula said walking over hearing part of the conversation. She looked for two of her teammates but couldn't find them.
"Oh that ember chick got a pretty bad bruise on her back. The medics are looking her over"akasha replied. It made nebula worry but some other know peach speiclzies in medical herbs. But still no gwen.
"Though i see that our other patrol hasn't arrived yet. Where are they?"vance questioned joining them since they arrived. Along with a couple others but picto eyed zane seeing he wasn't in his restriants at all.
"Why isn't that thing in its restraints?"picto stated placing a hand on his magnum. While a few soldier close by eyed the group. Zane visbale backed up not liking how this might end. Nezumi eyed the captain for a moment stepping forward crossing her arms.
"For starters peach said he can't be in a collar. He suffering from aura ehxaustion so she advised we keep it off him for today. So he can recover his aura"nezumi said firmly but he didn't care as he dug through his pouch producing another collar.
"Don't care kids wearing one weather you like it or not."picto said as he motioned for his soldier to grab him. They did and in an instant he snapped the collar back in place as zane started to slowly exhale to clam himself down.
Immediately vance growled pulling his pistol out as he placed it under picto chin. The atlas soldier all pointed their weapons at him as the captain glared at the lynx.
"Son i suggest you stand down. I'm following protocol on what do to with a criminal"picto said but he pressed the pistol barrel further into his chin.
"Screw your protocols…remove that collar now. If not i'll do what i do to slavers to you and your atlesian grunts"vance snarled as his ears striahgrne out. Nezumi noticed the soldier ithcy trigger finger as she shot a web pulling the lynx back. Before vance could react she handed him off to port who took the lad away.
"Look you can treat the kid like a criminal. But for starters i'll allow the collar but he needs proper sleep. At least let him stay in the barracks or put a cot down in that cell"nezumi asked as the captain thought for a moment. Then he just simply nodded.
"Fine i'll allow a cot but when inspection arrives in the next two days. He's heading to atlas the rest of you will head to menagerie. I'm not risking a criminal running loose to cause havoc and another fall from happening. Thing already killed hundreds"picto stated
This just angered a few of them since it was him who found out about the assiantion attempt. It started to annoy them but they didn't argue.
Akasha huffed"fine besides that now we all gotta wait for the others to arrive"she said as they decided to wait for them. About thirty minutes later down the street right now closing in on base was cardin and company. The group was just finishing up killing some grimm that were close to the camp.
Trifia dugged her knife out a bobratusk stomach after killing it as it dissovled into dust. Tulip rushed in hoping up onto a car as she fired into a beowulf for a bit. Until eventually it tried to snatch her up but she dodged it then fired a few more shots killing it. With tia she was struggling a little.
The women was better with her fist than a automatic rifle but she faired pretty well. She fired a few shots into a grimm knees cuaisng it it to kneel on the ground. Then she quickly brought the rifle up jamming it into a grimm mouth pressing down on the trigger killing it.
With gwen and cardin the two were double teamming some grimm together as cardin rushed his way through the grimm cuaisng them to stumble. While gwen used a overturned piece of rubble as a lunching point as she leaped into the air.
Then with a flick of her wirst she brought out a purple dagger and fiery red dagger. Quickly throiwng it into the middle of the hoard it detonated creating a small gravity well. It sucked the grimm in as she luanched the second dagger as it illuminated all of them in flames killing them as they turned to
After killing the grimm they moved foward toward the base as they were close to the base. But gwen eyed the sky seing it slowly starting to turn into an orange haze.
"Guess it'll be nighttime soon we should start picking up pace"gwen said
"Agreed rather not deal with grimm at night. Were lucky were close to base"tulip replied
"Then lets head back and regroup with the others then. Wonder if they removed grimm boys mental suggestions"cardin said with hope as they picked up pace returning to base. Once they were inside immediately they were greeted by glynda and surprisingly nebula. Immediately she rushed over hugging gwen who returned the embrace.
"Thank remnant you guys are okay. We thought you all ran into trouble out their"nebula said peeking gwen cheek as she smiled.
"Hey were the best huntresses here. Nothing can put us down not even some pesky grimm"gwen siad in confidence but quickly stopp it because she shouldn't let her cocky attitude control her. If she does it might ended up losing her another arm or something else.
"Depsite that how did your trip to the business district go?"glynda questioned with intrigue since she noticed gwen carrying a guitar strapped to her back.
"Nothing much ran into some grimm in the area. But we quickly dealt with them immediately but we made a small supply run. The kid found a guitar in a ruined music store, we should use it tonight. Help boost everyone moral"tulip suggested.
"That sounds like an excellent idea. Everyone already in high spirits after killing that girmm knight. Whats some music"picto said walking over as following him was zane with two guards flaning him. But close behind him was xander who had a look of rage across his face.
The young wolf called out to the captain"you jerk! Are you seriously going to deny my aunt and cousin a proper buriel!"xander cired in rage getting in the man face. This confused the new arrivals as they stared at the two. But cardin also noticed zane in the collar again which worried him. Because he still needs to recover his lost aura.
"What the heck is the kid talking about exactly?"tia questioned
"Nothing just that grimm knight we killed was someone his father knew. I don't care if you knew him were taking his bodie to atlas. We need to figure out what makes these things tick and how to properly kill them."picto said this glaring at zane who looke down throwing his hood up.
"Captain i've told you already for the past half hour that their nothing to learn from him. Hes all bones their nothing left"merlot argued walking behind him.
Picto groaned having to deal with all these idiot"look your a main researcher on the project which is useful. But were sending him to atlas i'll only listen to who arrives for inspection. "Picto said firmly as he began to walk away until someone made a request.
"I uh can i use the forge for a bit"zane asked sheppsihly making the captain stop looking at him.
"I'm not letting a murderer try to make more weapons of mass destruction"picto spat as he looked down hearing that.
Port sighed walking up placing a hand on the general"soilder it would be good for him to relieve some stress. If you want i can have your soldier keep an eye on him along wiht myself"port offered as he thought for a moment then nodded relenting it seems. He might have a heart afterall.
