Chapter 4

The feast began and soon everyone was eating. The refugee students were varied in their reactions as they ate as they began to get to know their new housemates. At the Slytherin table, Ariana gave a gentle smile to those nearest her.

"This place is very different from Castelobruxo." She said in response to a question sent her way by Jeff.

He nodded. "I'll bet. Well, I can only imagine."

Ariana nodded. "Yeah, it...it was bad, horrible, so many of us, lost so many...the one things we don't know though, is why we fifteen were brought here."

"What...what do you mean?" Jennifer Howells asked.

In contrast to her appearance last year where her head had been shaved, she had regrown some of her hair, now sporting a pixie cut. Ariana took note of the girl and bit her lip, it was clear to her that this girl was a fellow sufferer, only her suffering looked a little closer to home compared to the terrors she and the others had endured.

She sighed. "I just don't understand why we fifteen were specifically sent here to Hogwarts while everyone else was sent to Beauxbatons...I'm grateful we're here and being taken care of, I just don't understand why we were the ones sent here unlike the others."

Jennifer seemed to look anxious all over again while Jeff pondered.

"I...I see what you mean, that is strange…"

He looked out over the other tables, wondering if the others were getting any similar topics of conversation, but getting different or more detailed answers.

Indeed at the Hufflepuff table, Toru was being asked by Alyssa and Leanne about Mahoutokoro.

"It's an interesting place, there's a lot to see and it's just beautiful." He admitted.

But they noticed he had a sad look on his eyes and they shared worried glances. Jamie was the only one who did not react, Toru noticed this and looked at him, curiously and worried as he took in Jamie's haunted look and made a mental note to find out what was going on there.

It was Alyssa however who finally noticed and asked. "Is...Is something wrong, beyond the usual, I mean, something really seemed to be bothering you there."

Toru blinked, surprised but then recovered himself. "Ah, yes, um...sorry. I am kinda...There was supposed to be sixteen of us here. Goro didn't make it."

"Goro?" Leanne asked worriedly.

Well aware of others listening in, Toru sighed.

"Goro was a close friend of mine." Toru explained. He was part of our group, coming to Hogwarts. But we were attacked on the way by the same guys who attacked our school...as if they knew where we were and where we were going."

"Wait, what?" Another student gasped.

He nodded. "Yeah...no matter what way I look at it, that's all it seems. We got away but, it was only then we realized Goro was gone and...so were our attackers. We had no clue where to even begin to try and find him."

They all shared worried looks at that, adding to their worries about Jamie who was still quiet and reticent.

At the Ravenclaw table, Carla bit her lip, while none of the four most notable refugees, the ones with the necklaces, sat at her table, she was close enough to overhear some of the conversations and bit her lip. This was one big mystery, as well as a tragedy, she had to wonder just how this would change things for this year. At the Gryffindor table, Pixie was being her usual 'charming' self. Amara shook her head and looked over at Marli and Cameron sitting opposite her.

"Don't worry about her, that's just Pixie Masters, she's arrogant and just...practically nobody in the house likes her." She explained. "Sorry…"

Marli sent her a polite smile. "It's okay although I must say, someone like her wouldn't last even half a day in Uagadou, we don't stand for that kind of behaviour."

"Same at Ilvermorny." Cameron replied softly. "I just...Man, I hope things will go okay, as if we haven't lost enough…"

Amara grimaced at that. "I am sorry to hear that...I wish, I wish I could offer more than that."

"It's okay, you mean well, everyone we've met so far seems nice, except, well…" Marli replied.

She nodded at Pixie and Amara smiled, glad to see they wouldn't fall under Pixie's sway. There was so much else she wanted to ask, not just about the schools but also about their necklaces and such. But it didn't seem right, not right now at least.

Cameron sighed however. "I just hope Rachel will be okay, it's the first time we've been separated since, since our parents…"

He sent a worried look at the frightened girl at the Ravenclaw table who matched his worried look right back at him.

"Both of them?" Marli gasped. "I...I just lost my father...my mother is staying Hogsmeade right now."

Cameron nodded and Amara felt bad all over again, she could only wonder how the night would go as the feast would soon be coming to an end and they'd be heading for the common room.

XXXXX

That night, Amara was jolted awake by loud noises, she was instantly out of bed and realized that her worse fears were realized, she ran right down to the common room to find Marli and Cameron, still in their night clothes, both looking terrified while others were crowded around them, all of them angry, some yelling.

"What is going on?!" She burst out as she pushed through the crowd to get to Marli and Cameron.

One of the Prefects glared.

"These two thought it'd be funny to start screaming and making noise for no reason." He snarled. "Woke everyone up?"

Amara glared, outraged. "No reason, NO REASON, HOW DARE YOU!?"

"Miss Jackson, lower your voice." The prefect snarled at her.

"You should be ashamed of yourself, you all should!" Amara continued as if not interrupted.

The Prefect spluttered and everyone glared at Amara.

"Are you all so dense, so stupid that you don't seem to realize that they clearly had nightmares, about their families being murdered, about being attacked by those monsters that attacked their homes, killed people they know and care about, people who tried to kill them?!"

Everyone froze upon Amara saying that.

"Miss Jackson…" The Prefect tried to say.

But Amara wasn't listening. "I'm disgusted with all of you, for treating these poor people this way, they suffered and were hurt in so many ways and all you think is they're just making noise. I ought to report every single one of you to Professor McGonagall for being such cruel evil heartless monsters."

"Oh give it a rest Jackson, nice sob story." Pixie sneered. "We all know it's a load of-"

"Quiet, Miss Masters." The Prefect said at once, silencing the shocked Pixie. "You...you're right, Miss Jackson. Alright everyone, that's enough, we...we've made a terrible mistake, we've got a lot to make up for...but it's late, back to bed."

Amara was pleased to see that apart from Pixie and her two minions, everyone looked guilty now, as if they realized just what a mistake they had made. That gave her hope as she brought Marli and Cameron back towards the dorms, reassuring Cameron as he made his way back to the boys dorm, while she led Marli back up to the girls, reassuring her, now things would get better.
