At the Luthor Mansion…

Lex says he has Deja vu as the newspaper proclaims that Luthor Corp is setting up in the Kawatche caves again. Lionel insists that Clark had something to do with the hole being opened. The entire conversation is being recorded by FBI agents. Lex gives them specific orders to leave Clark alone.

At the Kawatche Caves…

Recap:

Clark goes to the caves and discovers Lionel has it full of scientists and equipment. Clark is out searching for his father, who's gone missing. At the Kent farm, Martha is given a warrant by the feds to search the premises and tear the farm apart. Clark finds Johnathan at the cemetery. Clark confirms that Johnathan is his true father, not Jor-El. The two return to the farm and see the wreckage. Martha believes the agents took the key. Clark reveals he still has it.

At the Talon…

Lana sat alone in her abandoned coffee shop. Business had been slow; she had noticed how there were fewer people at school today. The school gossips chattered about how the absentees were scared.

"Evening, Miss Lang."

"Mr. Wallace." Lana breathed a sigh of relief, seeing her regular customer come through the door. "How are you? I've been worried since you haven't been coming in."

"Yes, well, I confess I've been afraid to leave the safety of my shop. Now it doesn't matter."

Mr. Wallace seemed under a dark cloud. Lana had recognized his name on the list, but, just like with Lex, there must have been a mistake. Mr. Wallace always acted normal. He was a kind, quiet man who only cheated when completing the crossword puzzles.

"One black coffee with two sugars coming up."

"Actually, Miss Lang, I was thinking I could try one of those peppermint mochas. No make it one of those caramel frappu…frappunos?"

"Frappuccino? Sure. That's a change for you."

"I always stayed away from the good stuff. Had to keep the blood pressure down. But now…my time's up." Mr. Wallace pulled something from his coat pocket and placed it on the counter. When Lana looked closer, it was a meteor rock with "Freak" written in white letters.

The sight of the calling card, knowing it could mean the kind man's death, caused Lana to drop the syrup bottle. Mr. Wallace's hand shot out and grabbed the falling object. Lana inhaled sharply as she saw the mechanic's arm stretched out in an abnormal length, like it was stretched silly putty.

"Do I scare you?" He asked, handing Lana the bottle. His arm retracted back to its normal length.

"No," Lana lied, forcing a smile and busying herself by fixing his order.

"Then you're taking it better than when this first happened to me. I screamed for ten minutes straight. Luckily it was midnight and there was no one around to hear me. I had dissolved into this blob on the floor. They would have needed to use a spatula to get me into the ambulance. It wasn't until dawn I was able to put myself back together." Mr. Wallace chuckled at the memory.

"You have nothing to fear; you haven't done anything wrong," Lana stated bravely as she placed the sugary beverage in front of him.

"Van already tried last night. My body's elasticity prevented the bullet from penetrating my skin. But he'll be back." The mechanic took a sip of the new concoction. After thinking for a few minutes, he smacked his lips in appreciation. "Miss Lang, I wanted to come here tonight because I heard about the things you said, and I just want you to understand that we're just people. We're abnormal; we're freaks, but we are people. And harboring hatred in your heart will only hurt you in the long run."

"Mr. Wallace, I don't hate you."

"Why not? My name's on the list. I have powers."

"Yeah, but…" Lana's mind tried to rationalize what she felt and what she said.

"Miss Lang, you have the right to believe what you want to believe. But for everyone's sake, especially your own, please be consistent. You know, I think I'll take that whole berry pie. That would make a good last meal, wouldn't it?"

"Aren't you gonna fight back?"

"I'm a passivist, Miss Lang. Never fought a battle in my life. Wouldn't even know where to start."

"There's got to be something we can do. Here," Lana placed the pie and a fork in front of him. "I need to make a phone call."

At the Kawatche Caves…

Recap:

Johnathan goes to the caves with a shotgun to confront Lionel for raiding his farm. He demands Lionel stay away from Clark. Lionel, in turn, goads Johnathan saying Clark is weak and he learned it from his father. The two fight only to be pulled apart by Clark. The key falls out of his pocket and begins to glow. All three rush over to grab it. The key starts to float and phases through the protective shield the scientists set up. Johnathan puts Lionel in a chokehold causing Lionel to lose sight of the disc. Clark breaks his father's grip and Luthor Corp security surround the Kents. Mr. Kent says Lionel better let him go unless he wants to explain the unauthorized raid to the cops. Lionel lets them go and sees the key is gone and the hole is once more closed over. Neither Clark nor Johnathan have it, so they assume the key is locked in the wall.
