Chapter 3: Know your Limits
The whole fire pants incident would have been hilarious if not for Inko wailing and dangling Izuku by his legs. She tried getting his pj pants off before they burn him. Meanwhile Izuku was freaking out just a bit. After getting the small fire put out and a change of pj bottoms things settled down. Inko let out a deep sigh and wiped her face of any tears. Izuku noticed his mother's appearance and ran to her.
"Momma!"
He wrapped his tiny arms around his mothers legs. Izuku started to tear up at making his mother worry so much.
"Ohhh, my baby!"
Inko couldn't help but pick up her son and hold him close. They both cried and hugged for a moment. The next thing that happened was unexpected. They both broke into a fit of laughter that lasted several minutes. Tears of fear and worry were replaced by tears of joy and love.
As they both settled down Inko carried Izuku to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Izuku help on to his mother and smiled.
"What do you feel like having for breakfast, son?"
She asked, while setting him down on a chair. He scooted himself closer to the kitchen table and thought for a moment.
"Egg fried rice with bacon!"
The boy says excitedly. Inko nods with a smile. She turns around to get the food ready.
"It looks like your quirk is getting stronger Izu. Maybe we should look into finding a quirk counselor to help you control your flames."
Izuku suddenly remembered the dream he had the previous night. He nodded to his mother's suggestion. What were those little embers for?
"That's a good idea! I don't want to keep waking up with my pants on fire, hehe!"
He didn't want to worry his mother further so he kept quite about the dream. The cooking was done in a comfortable silence. Izuku decided that he wanted to listen to the hero news and went to turn on the TV. As he got back, Inko was scooping the yellow rice into a bowl. Izuku sat back down and watched his mother chop up the bacon and add it on top of the rice just how he liked it.
After breakfast Izuku went back to his room. He gathered up some clothes for a shower and went to the bathroom. Feeling the warm water fun down his body was always one of the best feelings. He took a moment to bask in the heat before starting to wash himself.
While cleaning himself, Izuku wondered how he would train his quirk now that it seemed to have grown stronger overnight. Standing under the water he decided to try something. Remebering what Dr. Tsubasa said, he used his breathing and emotions to use his quirk. He took a calming breath and held out his pointer finger. To his surprise a small flame appeared above his finger tip. When he let his breath go the flame went out and he sighed in disappointment.
'Oh well, it's a work in progress '
He thought to himself. He took the soap and luffa and continued with his shower. About 30 minutes later he had stepped out of the tub with a towel in hand. He dresses in black pants, white socks, and an All Might themed shirt. Once dressed, he went back to his room to get his notebook. Once he got the note book and a sharpened pencil, he made his way back to the living room. The hero news still played on the tv as Inko washed the dishes after her own shower.
He sat down and opened his notebook, flipping to a blank page. The news covered a story of a recently added hero in the ranks. Izuku started to scribble down any info that the program showed and told of the hero called; 'The Sky Crawler'. To be honest, the boys skills in analysis were very impressive to say the least. His quirk arrived a year later than most kids tend to develop theirs. This unfortunately lead to Izuku getting bullied at as school for supposedly being quirkless. The boy often spent time alone and slightly got obsessed with trying to activate his own quirk, which lead to him being more intelligent than most kids.
The tragic part that Izuku thought, was losing his best friend. Katauki Bakugou was a boy that he often spent his free time with. Their parents being childhood friends eventually lead to the two starting a friendship before Katsuki got his quirk. Izuku didn't want to admit it but there were signs that the boy was bad news even before he got his quirk. Katuki has the quirk called 'Explosion', which allowed him to use his nitroglycerin like sweat on his hands to detonate at will. Since Izuku didn't develop a quirk with Katsuki and the rest of the class, he was subjected to quirkist behavior.
Not wanting to focus on the unfortunate events, Izuku started writing down more information on the new hero. Inko started to put the dishes away to dry. Once she finished, she entered the living room and sat on the couch to watch the news and her son.
"Later today I'll make some calls and talk to Mitsuki to see if we can find a nice quirk counselor for you, Izu"
She said while letting out a relaxed sigh. Maybe she can check to see if Mitsuki had contacted a counselor to help her son with his quirk. While she was pondering on different suggestions, Izuku kept making notes. This had gone on for about an hour. Izuku, feeling satisfied with the amount of notez he took finally closed the notebook. Inko had fallen asleep on the couch. Izuku looked at her and smiled sadly. He knew his mother worked hard for the both of them and couldn't wait to help out. He quietly made his way to his mothers room to get a blanket.
He covered her making sure she is comfy. Deciding on what to do, he tore a sheet of paper out of his notebook and left a note for his mother.
'Went to park.'
He went to the front door and sat on the floor. Grabbing his red shoes, he made sure to tie them correctly. Once he was done he got up and quitley slipped out the door. The trip to the park was uneventful and fairly easy as it wasn't too far from the apartment. His plan is to try to practice what he can do with his flames. He got to the park in little time. Since it's a week day, there are no other kids since they are in school.
Deciding it would be best to keep to himself, Izuku went to look for a clearing. As he walked through the park there was the sound of nature all around him. He looked around and listened to what he could. The leaves blowing in the wind, birds singing, small citters running around. Izuku didn't know how to explain it but he felt a peace he had never known. His young mind couldn't find an explanation as to why being in the park felt right.
Once he found a clearing he sat on the ground. The dream he had was bothering him again. What is that place? Izuku's eyes widened slightly. There was also a voice. Why did it tell him to breath in? Was that the explanation to his power boost? Deciding to test something out, he held out his hand with the palm up. He took a deep breath and focused on his palm. At first nothing happened. A minute went by and suddenly a small flame appeared in the middle of his palm. Once he saw the flame, he tried to focus on it, feel it.
As fast as the flame appeared it went out. Izuku let out a sigh and thought about it.
'why does the fire go out as soon as it appears? I take my breath and hold it but it doesn't work. Should I let it out?'
He thought to himself. He took another another breath and held out his palm. The flame appeared faster this time and he slowly let out his breath. The fire in his palm flickered slightly but kept alive. Izuku smiled in slight victory still letting out his breath slowly. He closed his fist and jumped up happily with a cheer. As he let out his happy shout, a small blast of fire came from his mouth. It caught him off guard and made him fall back.
Izuku got up with little effort and dusted himself off. He now understood the basics of how his fired worked. He inhaled once again, this time making the flame appear on his palm mid inhale. Holding his breath the flame started to flicker but it held while Izuku focused on the heat he could feel. Like in the morning, the heat didn't hurt but it would have burned anyone else who wasn't a fire user. After about twenty seconds of holding his breath, Izuku let it out and took deep breathes to regain a normal rhythm.
Something felt wrong. It was harder for Izuku to draw in any breath after the fire in his palm went out. Falling to his knees, he put one hand on his neck and another on his chest. It was as him something hit him in rhe stomach and knocked the wind out of him. It took him a long minute to regain his normal breathing. Just when he managed to calm dowm, he lost consciousness. The world faded to a blurry puddle. The last thing he saw before hitting the ground was the sun shining brightly.
-About an hour later-
Izuku snapped awake as a bird landed next to him. With a small yelp and awkward spasm he slowly sits up and rubs his head.
'What happened?'
He rubbed his head slightly with a groan. His limbs felt like he had ran around the park for hours and hours. Remembering what happened before he passed out, Izuku looked around the area. There were no burn marks or signs of wild flames so that was good. He looked up at the sky and saw the sun was about midway across the sky.
Deciding to head home, he turned around and started to make his way out of the clearing. The walk was peacful jusy like when he was entering the park. There were others children and parents at the park now as well. He tilted his head in slight shock. How long had he been out for?
Once he was about to leave the park there was a loud boom. Izuku felt a shiver run down his back. There was only one person who would make those exact noises. Not too long after the small explosion, there was a soft cry. The greenette turned in the direction of the sound and saw something unforgivable. His ex best friend is standing over another kid with his plams held out. The kid looked to be slightly hurt and crying.
"Come on, just give me the ball already you extra! You don't need it."
The explosive blonde is in the middle of trying to force another kid to give him their play ball. The red color caught Katauki's attention and he thought it would suit him more than the other boy.
"My mommy gave me this for my birthday, it's mine!"
The other boy said while shuddering. His clothes were torn and slightly burnt here and there due to the fire cracker like explosions from the blonde. Naturally, this caused Izuku to be filled with anger at his once friend. Said anger quickly melted away as he remembered all the times he was the subject of training for the explosive boy. No matter, a hero always helps when someone is in trouble.
"Kachaan, leave him alone!"
Katsuki twitches in annoyance at hearing that nickname. He turns to his side to see Izuku running down the park trail with a look of fear.
"What are you doing here you little Deku?!"
He shouted at the greenette. Once Izuku was close enough within hearing distance, he stopped. Izuku started to shake a bit after realizing what he's doing.
"Why are you trying to take his ball, Kaachan? Heroes aren't suppose to take things from others."
Izuku asked the explosive boy. The question seemed to make the blonde angier as he started to shift his focus on Izuku now.
"Real heroes never lose, Deku! If he wanted to keep the ball, he'd fight me for it. But now you're just annoying me."
Izuku let out a slight whimper at seeing Katsuki shift his gaze at him. Izuku took a shakey step forward and brought up his hands. Not in a fighting motion but with his palms facing outward. He would only protect himself and the boy on the ground.
"What's a quirkess Deku like you gonna do, huh?"
Mocked Katsuki. He saw Izuku with his hands out and laughed. What was he gonna do, push him?
"I'm not usless Kachaan, and I'm not a deku."
Izuku manged to stutter out. He wasn't gonna like to himself, he was pretty terrified. During the short commotion the boy that Katsuki was bullying had left. Izuku nodded in slight accomplishment, he had distracted the bully long enough for him to escape.
"Now youre gonna get it Deku! that was my new ball you just lost me!"
Now angered, Katsuki started running towards Izuku. The palms of his hands giving off fire cracker pops. Izuku held up his palms in fear and took a shaky breath with his hands held out...
Nothing happened.
