Chapter 17: Getting to know Sadie

A nurse came into Eddie's recovery room with Sadie in tow. She was wrapped up in a receiving blanket and in a plastic bassinet. Eddie smiled at Sadie. The nurse gathered her up in her arms and then placed Sadie in Eddie's arms. Jamie sat in a chair next to the bed and was beaming. He ran a hand over Sadie's tiny head.
"She's beautiful. She looks just like me."
Eddie made a face and frowned.
"So smug Reagan. I know I'm in there somewhere. Ha! The eyebrows!"
Sadie's tiny bottom lip began to tremble. She wasn't cold, she was probably getting hungry. The nurse handed Eddie a bottle and Sadie latched on, beginning to suckle. Jamie ran a finger across Sadie's cheek and spoke to her.
"Slow down baby girl, the food isn't going anywhere. Mommy and daddy are here to keep you safe."
Sadie calmed at the sound of Jamie's voice. Eddie kept smiling down at Sadie and moved the bottle slightly.
"Almost done sweetheart. You have a good appetite. Just like mommy."
Jamie kept smirking and traced Sadie's nose with his index finger. He could've sworn he saw a smile on her face as Eddie took the empty bottle away. But instead, she began to fuss. Jamie gathered Sadie into his arms and carefully placed her on her up against his shoulder and began to gently pat her back. He waited until her heard a few small burps escape her tiny mouth.
"That's it. That's better isn't it baby girl? Got all that gas out of your little tummy."
Cradling Sadie in his arms once more, he got to his feet and carried her around the room. Eddie was fast asleep again. Jamie cooed at Sadie as he continued to walk around the room with her.
"You like when daddy walks around the room with you?"
Sadie cooed at Jamie, and he walked over towards the window, watching the different cars passing by the hospital. People walking on the sidewalk below. There was a soft knock on the door and he looked towards it.
"Come in."
The door opened slowly and in came Danny and Cora. Cora was the first to speak.
"Daddy? Is mama, ok?"
Jamie nodded as Cora got closer to him.
"Your mom is sleeping right now. She's ok. She was bleeding a lot after she had your little sister. So she had to have surgery. Unfortunately, your mom can't have any more babies."
Cora's eyes became wide, and her eyes darted between Jamie, Eddie and Sadie.
"Mom can't have any more babies. But she's ok right?"
Jamie nodded and rocked Sadie.
"Yes. But your mom and I talked about it, and Sadie is the last baby in this family."
Cora swallowed and nodded, then turned her attention towards her little sister.
"Is this her?"
Jamie nodded and held Sadie a little closer towards Cora.
"Sadie, I'd like you to meet your big sister Cora."
Cora stood awkwardly and looked at Jamie.
"Can I hold her?"
Jamie smiled and gave his response.
"Of course. Hold out your arms. Mind her head. There you go. Here. Let's get a photo for the gram."
Cora looked at Jamie and rolled her eyes.
"Dad…"
Jamie smirked and snapped the photo with his phone. Danny watching the scene in front of him.
"This is a real kodak moment baby brother."
Smiling, Jamie watched as Cora rocked her little sister. He still remembered the day she was born, holding her in his arms.
