"Now Ash, how many Pokemon have you captured here in Unova so far?" Cheren asked.
"Two, so I have three Pokemon right now!" Ash said.
"Then we will have a three on three match." Cheren said. "In a gym match only the challenger may switch out Pokemon at any time and when one sides Pokemon are unable to battle, the winner is decided. Now as gym leader, I will send out my Pokemon first. Come on out Patrat!"
"Snivy I choose you!" Ash exclaimed.
"Patrat use Work Up."
"Snivy use Tackle!"
Snivy ran across the field, slamming into Patrat, causing the brown Pokemon to stumble back just a pit.
"Patrat use Tackle."
"Snivy use Tackle again!"
Snivy and Patrat slammed into each other, with Snivy being thrown back a ways.
"Snivy use Vine Whip!"
Snivy slammed their vines onto the ground, slowing their momentum before charging back forward.
"Patrat use Detect!"
Patrat easily moved out of the way of Snivy's vines, before rushing at the grass type.
"Patrat use Bite."
"Snivy use Tackle!"
Snivy launched at Patrat, only to be bitten down, knocking out the grass type.
"Snivy return!" Ash called out, recalling the grass type. "Pikachu show them what for."
"Pika!" Pikachu exclaimed.
"Well then Ash, show me you and Pikachu's electric potential!" Cheren exclaimed.
"Pikachu use Thunderbolt!"
"Patrat use Detect!"
Pikachu sent out a bolt of electricity as Patrat just dodged out of the way.
"Now use Quick Attack!"
"Use Tackle!"
Pikachu sped across the arena, his body becoming a blur as he struck into Patrat, sending the normal type flying into the back wall of the arena.
"You were wonderful Patrat, take a long rest." Cheren said. "Now even knowing my Pokemon is at a disadvantage, my duty as a gym leader is to test a trainers abilities against my designated type." Cheren explained to the students. "So come out Pidove! Use Leer!"
"Pikachu use Iron Tail!"
Pikachu leapt across the field, hardening his tail as a shiver ran down his spine at the same time before striking Pidove.
"Pidove use Growl!"
"Pikachu use Quick Attack!"
Pikachu shuddered once more as a cry came out across the arena, before he sped across towards Pidove, quickly closing the distance between the two.
"Pidove use Quick Attack!"
"Pikachu use Volt Tackle!"
Pikachu and Pidove raced across the field, slamming into one another, Pidove being sent flying back with sparks across their body.
"That was an excellent use of super effective moves." Cheren said, returning Pidove. "But now it is time for my ace! Stoutland come out!"
"Pikachu use Thunderbolt!"
"Stoutland use Work Up!"
Stoutland let out a roar before taking the brunt Pikachu's attack.
"Stoutland use Fire Fang!"
"Pikachu dodge it with Quick Attack!"
Despite Stoutland great size, it did not stop the dog like Pokemon from bounding across the arena with great agility, crunching down on Pikachu with a flaming bite.
"Pikachu use Iron Tail to break free!"
"Stoutland use Ice Fang!"
Pikachu swung his tail back and forth until he got enough speed to strike Stoutland, releasing the grip on him but not without taking serious damage in the process.
"Pikachu use Volt Tackle!"
"Stoutland use Thunder Fang!"
Pikachu charged with what was left of his energy, striking into the mighty Stoutland before succumbing to damage and fainting.
"You were great Pikachu." Ash said, walking over and picking up the electric type.
"Wait I thought he wasn't allowed to interfere by stepping into the ring!" Hugh called out.
"He didn't interfere with an ongoing battle, only grabbing a Pokemon that had no more energy left to fight." Cheren explained. "While an uncommon situation it is hardly illegal as he didn't interfere with any of his Pokemon that were able to continue battling, nor did he interact with my Stoutland."
"Thank you for clarifying that." Ash said, setting Pikachu down once he was able to stand on his own. "Now time to show them what for! Riolu I choose you!"
Riolu landed on the field, his yellow scarf fluttering behind him.
"Stoutland use Fire Fang!"
"Riolu use Double Team!"
Three Riolu appeared around Ash's Riolu as they all raced across the field towards Stoutland with one of them disappearing.
"Riolu use Force Palm!"
"Stoutland use Work Up!"
The three Riolu rushed forward, slamming into Stoutland as it strengthened itself once more.
"Use Ice Punch!"
"Stoutland use Thunder Fang!"
The three Riolu flipped backwards, before launching forward once more, their right fists cloaked with a freezing energy before two struck Stoutland while the third dissipated.
"Two left." Cheren remarked.
"And I'll make them count." Ash said, a yellow flicker in his eyes. "Riolu use Force Palm!"
"Stoutland use Ice Fang!"
Stoutland leapt at one of the remaining two Riolu, dissipating the fake as the final Riolu struck the large normal type sending it back a ways.
"One more time! Riolu use Force Palm!"
"Stoutland use Fire Fang!"
Riolu's paw and eyes glowed a faint yellow as he dove under Stoutland, striking the normal type from below with a yellow pulse, sending it up and then crashing to the ground in defeat.
"Very impressive Ash." Cheren said, recalling his Stoutland. "Here as proof of your victory in my gym I present to you this, the Basic Badge."
"Thank you." Ash said accepting the badge. "Pikachu guess what, this means we just got our first badge in the Unova region!" Ash cheered, holding the badge up proudly.
"Pi Pikachu!" Pikachu cheered.
"Ri Ri!" Riolu added excitedly.
"Wait Ash before you go!" Hugh said running up. "I'm not giving up, and next time we see each other, I want a rematch."
"Alright, but do you know what that makes us?" Ash asked.
"What?" Hugh asked.
"As of today, we're rivals." Ash said with a smirk. "And I don't plan on losing. So win that gym badge and we'll have a rematch in no time!"
