Chapter 27: Undefeatable PT 2

Kai and Katy were face to face.

'Okay…' Kai thought. 'I can do this. I can do this… I can do this!'

"Spark!" Katy's body shone yellow before she dashed forward with her fist thrown. Kai dashed in instead of dodging- reaching for the gym leader's shoulder instead. Using his momentum, Kai vaulted over his opponent and flipped into the air before landing with a crouch. Katy spun around and closed the distance, throwing multiple punches. Kai started dodging with incredible speed, so much so that he was moving much faster than the Gym leader was- and Kai was noticing this.

'Wait…' Kai said, 'if I'm this fast… then maybe I can mess with her...!' A smile came to the boy's lips as an idea came to his mind. 'I have to cut loose, show my true self in this battle without shame… so…!'

Katy threw a punch again, and Kai disappeared as though he teleported. Katy turned his head and looked around in confusion.

"Huh…"

Katy spun around upon hearing Kai's voice and saw him doing the unthinkable: He had his phone out and was taking a picture of himself. "I think this photo's nice, but we could do better."

"Hey!" Katy smiled despite yelling in protest.

"Oh, sorry," Kai said. "I've gotta do something to pass the time since you're so slow. Oooh," Kai turned his phone sideways as he started playing a game on his phone. "I love playing this game! Lemme see if I can beat this high score…"

Katy ran over to him and threw a punch, only for Kai to disappear, and then reappear right on top of Katy's head, while still playing on his phone.

The crowd cried out in excitement and laughter.

"Dang it, I hate this part of the game," Kai said, "I always lose," Kai leapt off of Katy's head, and Katy fell right on her back.

Kai landed on the ground all while still playing on his phone.

"Ugh.." Katy groaned as the crowd began laughing.

"Whoa…" Aeon said. "It seems that Katy's no match for him…"

"Yeah…" Arven said. "Doesn't look like much of a fight."

"Just as planned," Geeta's voice caused both brothers to turn their heads, seeing the top champion who was standing right next to their table. "Katy!" Geeta cried. "Remember what I said about holding back for trainers because you're the first gym they face? For this battle, you're allowed to go all-out. But no changing Pokémon!"

Katy gasped in glee. "Really!?" she cried. She raised her legs before flipping to her feet.

Kai looked up from his phone. "Wait, wha-"

Katy suddenly moved so fast that Kai lost sight of her- and then after the boy blinked the gym leader's fist slammed into his stomach. Static electricity coursed through the boy's body as spit flew out of his mouth.

Kai could feel it- the Spark Attack Katy used was super effective. It was so painful that he could fall to his knees any second. His phone fell to the floor before flying into his pocket.

"Do you know why I said that it would be impossible for you to win if you didn't believe in yourself?!" Geeta shouted. "It's because when I heard about your performance against That Team Star member, who is clearly stronger than the average trainer who has no badges… I knew that if Katy were to hold back against you, she'd lose easily. So, I planned to tell Katy that she was to be allowed to not hold back against you. That way it'd be a proper battle!"

Kai tore Katy's fist from his chest and then fell to his hands and knees. The blow was just that painful.

"This is the moment, Kai!" Geeta said.

Kai could feel his legs giving out as the pain surged through his body.

"This is the moment where you must believe in yourself!" Geeta continued.

Kai grit his teeth as he started breathing heavily. He looked up at Katy who had a smile on her face.

"Because if you don't…" Geeta said, "then you will lose this battle! Show me… show the world what you're made of!"

Kai stabbed his katana into the earth so it could stand on its own. He then pulled his Pokéball out, and returned the katana that was Quaxly back into the ball.

"I can't do this," Kai said, putting his pokéball into his pocket.

Everyone just watched in sheer surprise. Even Katy raised her eyebrows in astonishment as Kai lowered his head…

And then…Kai suddenly grinned a confident smile.

"...Not without you, Pawmo!" He cried. Kai threw his pokeball out, and out of it came Pawmo, who cried out gallantly.

Geeta smiled. Nemona jumped with joy. Arven and Aeon's mouths were agape with surprise. Tinkatuff watched on with admiration.

Everyone cheered loudly for Kai.

"I got you guys, right?!" Kai cried, looking at the crowd. "You totally thought I was going to give up there! But no. No-no no. I said I was going to go wild!"

Kai pulled out his Tera ball and grabbed the wrist of the hand he used to hold it as Pawmo came closer to him. "I'm just changing my Pokémon, that's all! Water's weak to Electric… so to up my chances…! I'm Tera-fusing with an Electric type!"

Kai crushed the ball, and a pillar of light exploded from his feet. Katy watched as the wind blew on her hair and chef's hat. Once the pillar faded, Kai was shown to be wearing Electric type gauntlets that shone yellow. Red, fighting type energy sparked around the gauntlets as well.

Kai motioned with his hand for Katy to come at him. Katy sparked with electricity before moving like a bullet.

Kai could see Katy rushing at him fist-first with blinding speed. As her fist came close to him, he was narrowly able to dodge her by sidestepping then landing a devastating Mach punch to Katy's stomach and sending her flying into the air.

Kai crouched before leaping into the sky, clenching his fists. "Close combat!" He cried as he closed the distance with Katy.

"Acrobatics!" Katy cried.

Katy and Kai pulled their fists at the same time before clashing with one another with intense finesse and skill. Katy used her acrobatic ability to dodge Kai's every punch and kick, while Kai used his brute force to swat away Katy's counter attacks.

'I'm doing it..!' Kai thought. 'I'm actually doing it..!'

Both Kai and Katy pulled their fists back once more before throwing punches at each other- their fists clashed before an explosion of light rang out.

The person who was sent flying from the impact was Kai- because Flying type attacks are super effective against Fighting types. Katy closed the distance.

"Sticky Web!" She cried- a web flew out of her claws and wrapped around Kai like a rope. Katy yanked her challenger toward her and raised her fist.

"Thunderbolt!" Kai cried. Lightning flew from Kai's body and traveled across Katy's web before touching the Gym leader and zapping her. As Katy cried out in pain, Kai broke free and flew like a lightning bolt after his opponent. Kai landed a devastating Thunder punch to Katy's face before unleashing a barrage of attacks.

"You've never fought a trainer like me before!" Kai cried. "And I'm just getting…!" Kai clasped his hands together and raised them over his head. "…started!" Kai slammed his clasped hands like a hammer to send Katy flying to the ground.

Katy's body bounced high into the air after hitting the ground, and Kai darted for her- punching her stomach again and again to send her back to the ground. Kai threw another thunder punch that sent Katy to the ground once again- and her body crashed onto the gym floor.

Kai raised his fist for a final attack. His fist started exploding with electricity as he fell toward the downed Katy. Kai slammed his fist onto the ground as a giant bolt of lightning slammed where he punched. Dust flew into the air as an explosion rose.

The spectators that were watching had to shield themselves with their arms or lunch bags once a blast of strong wind started blowing against them.

Geeta, who was covering her face with one arm grinned. She watched as the dust settled and revealed Kai, who looked completely astonished. Not because he had won, but because Katy was nowhere to be found.

Suddenly, Kai felt Katy's hand on his shoulder. Kai spun around and saw Katy's clawed fist charged with poison type energy flying for him.

Kai cried out in pain as he was sent flying like a rock thrown to a puddle. He bounced twice before sliding on the ground and leaving a dirt trail behind him. Slowly, he stood up, and spat beside him. His spit was purple- a tell-tale sign that he himself was now poisoned.

"All right!" Katy roared. "Fighting you is a real delight. But not as delightful as my next move..!" Katy suddenly went into her pockets and pulled out something. It was a steaming hot cookie that was the shape of a cinnamon bun. The one thing that got Kai somewhat concerned was that the tasty treat was glowing with bug-type energy.

"This is my Gym's Special Gimmick! My 'Sweet Treat'! What this cookie will do once I eat it… is power me up!"

Before Kai could speak, Katy took a bite of her cookie. Suddenly, her entire body began to shine before a green pillar of light shot up from below Katy's feet. Once the green pillar of light faded, Kai and the entire crowd watched in shock as Katy now had butterfly wings. Her hat was now shining green like it had terastilized.

Katy looked at her claws, which now had the shape of tasers.

"Oh-! Look at that!" Katy cried as electricity sparked on her newly formed claws. "My Grubbin evolved into a Charjabug just now!"

"Wait…" Nemona said. "The fact that Grubbin evolved changes things…!"

"Huh?" Arven and Aeon turned to Nemona, who was holding Tinkatuff's hand and standing beside Geeta. "Whuddya mean?" He said.

"Charjabug is a Bug/Electric type," Geeta said. "And Pawmo is an Electric/Fighting type."

"That means," Nemona continued, "Neither of their attacks will be very effective against each other."

"Wait-.." Aeon said. "If that's true, then that means that…"

"This battle's going to become a battle of attrition; we're in for a long fight." Nemona said.

"But wait.." Arven said as he observed Kai. Kai started breathing heavily. His skin was starting to turn more Purple. "Kai's poisoned… if this battle goes on for too long, Kai's going to lose..!"

'Your back's against the wall, Kai.' Geeta thought. 'It's times like these when we truly begin to shine. Show me, show all of us what your next move is…'

Kai clenched his fists.

"It doesn't matter how strong you get-" Kai cried. "It doesn't matter how much you stop holding back! As long as I'm able to put my mind into it…" Kai did a thumbs up, and then aimed his thumb toward his face. "I…AM UNDEFEATABLE!"
