Chapter Text
16/11/1996.
Friday.
Hermione had cast a disillusionment spell and was walking through the dungeons. She had been waiting for this day for days. When she arrived at the office, she knocked on the door and entered when the door opened by itself.
"Show yourself, Miss Granger."
Hermione tapped her wand on her head, removing the disillusionment spell. As she placed her wand on her arm, she looked at the man sitting at the table tending to the scrolls. "Good evening, Professor."
"Good evening, Miss Granger." He raised his head and looked at her face. "Have you done your Defense Against the Dark Arts homework?"
She nodded quickly as she approached the table. "Yes, I've already finished."
"Well, we will see the homework on Monday." He slid a scroll. "You go to the laboratory, I'll be back soon."
Her eyes widened for a moment. "Am I going to make the love potion alone?"
He grinned slightly and shook his head from side to side. "Of course not. You go and prepare the ingredients. I'll do the rest and you watch."
Her face fell in disappointment. "So I won't help?"
"Amortentia is a dangerous potion, Miss Granger. So you will only observe. Now go and prepare the ingredients."
Hermione wanted to huff like a child, but she just nodded and went to the laboratory. There she went to the room where the ingredients were and collected the ingredients for the love potion. She returned to the laboratory and began to prepare the materials, placing them on the table.
She had the ingredients ready within 10 minutes. She lined them up one by one.
Meanwhile, Snape had finished the scrolls. He cleared up the surroundings, stood up, took off his robe and put it on the back of the chair. He entered the laboratory with his redingot on. "Are you ready, Miss Granger?"
She immediately turned to him. "Yes, everything is ready."
Snape approached the cauldron and lit the fire. He waited for the water he put in it to boil. "I heard Potter beat you in potions class."
Hermione's face fell. "Yes."
"In fact, it is suspicious that a child who has not been able to surpass you for years has suddenly surpassed you."
She crossed her arms over her chest. "He found a book, it contains how to make potions etc. He makes it accordingly and the potion turns out great."
Snape's brows furrowed curiously. "What kind of book?"
"I don't know, I just know you have a book."
He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Must be a good book." When the water boiled, he added rose petals and vanilla. "But I must say, your book is also very useful."
Her gaze became excited. "Really?"
"Yes, but I would like to say that I have corrected some information." he said and pointed to the notebook on his desk. "Write in your notebook that I added the rose petals and vanilla to the boiling water."
Hermione took her notebook and wrote down everything he said. "So what information did you correct in my book?"
He added the cinnamon and mixed carefully. "I wrote some things that would be more efficient. For example, chopping the ingredients in a potion gives less efficiency, while grinding it can give more efficiency. That's why I changed a few information."
Hermione nodded softly. After all, he was a potions professor, albeit a former one. "Thank you."
He looked at her with a surprised attitude for a moment. "I thought you would be angry." he said with slight sarcasm. "Now write in the notebook that I added the cinnamon and stirred gently."
Hermione quickly wrote it down in her notebook. "Why would I be angry?"
"I thought you'd be upset with me changing it since you connect to information in general."
She shrugged. "You are a potions professor after all, you are more knowledgeable than me."
A small smile appeared on his face. "It's nice of you to accept these things."
She secretly rolled her eyes. "Is it my fault that I learned the information?"
He laughed in his nice, harsh tone. "Sometimes yes."
Hermione felt her heart speed up when she heard his laugh. "How?"
"Not everything you read is 100% true. But you act as if everything you read is true. That's why I'm surprised you didn't get angry with my corrections." he said as he added the other ingredients to the potion.
She put her elbow on the table and rested her chin on her hand. "It took me a while to learn that not all the information I read was true, but I learned. That's why I'm open to many things."
Snape smiled slightly. "And that's better for you." he said and stepped back from the cauldron. He pulled out his wand and set off an alarm. "Write in your notebook that you will bleed for 15 minutes."
She immediately took the note and looked at him again. "If we left it to boil, what do we do now?"
Severus hesitated for a moment, but then extended his hand to her . "Come," he said gently.
Hermione gulped as she looked at his hand. But she reached out and put her little hand into his big hand.
Severus slowly led her out of the laboratory. They walked towards his table together and he made her sit on the chair. He took his seat and sat down. "Do you want something to drink?"
She folded her hands in her lap. "If it's not too much trouble, I can drink hot chocolate."
He nodded. "Mippy."
A house elf appeared in the office. She was surprised to see that there was a student in front of Professor Snape, but she did nothing. She greeted. "Did you want something, Professor Snape, sir?"
"Yes, one hot chocolate and one strong coffee."
"Yes sir." And with a crack she disappeared.
"You have a house elf." said Hermione.
"Yes," Snape said as if it were obvious.
"How do you treat them?"
A small smile appeared on his face. "I'm not being bad." he said and a tray appeared in the middle of the table. He took his own coffee in front of him.
Hermione took her hot chocolate and drank it, blowing on it. There was silence between them.
While Severus was drinking his coffee, he opened the desk drawer, took out the book and handed it to her at the table. "Your book."
She put down the glass, picked up the book and checked inside. She could see his handwriting in some places. "Have you read them all?"
"Yes."
She closed the book, placed it on the table, picked up her glass and continued drinking. "The Ouidditch season is about to start. Do you think it's a good idea to play in this weather?"
"The weather may have been cold, but that never stopped them. Let's hope there are no catastrophic accidents."
She took a deep breath. "I'm worried about Harry, Ginny and Ron."
He raised one eyebrow. "Why?"
"Everyone knows about the war between Slytherin and Gryffindors. And as everyone gets older, their anger increases." she said with a sigh. "Harry is very angry at Draco because he tried to kill me. He hasn't made an attack yet, but I think he can do anything at any time."
He drank his coffee while taking a deep breath. "Normally I would never say this and I shouldn't, but it's nice that Potter is trying to protect his friend."
Hermione's eyes opened wide. Had Severus Snape said something nice about Harry Potter? "You said something nice about Harry. I thought you hated him."
He rolled his eyes. "First of all, just because I said something nice about Potter doesn't mean I like him. And I never said I hated Potter."
"But your actions made me think you hated him."
Severus took a deep breath. "There are some things I can't tell, Miss Granger."
Hermione's face fell, but after all, there was nothing between her and him. She didn't expect him to be able to tell anything anyway. "How many minutes are left in the potion?"
Severus waved his hand and the clock appeared. "2 minutes." He placed his glass on the tray and slowly stood up.
Seeing this, Hermione immediately put down her glass and stood up. She had just turned around when she tripped over the chair and began to lurch forward while letting out a small scream.
Until she felt her arm being grabbed and pulled into a chest.
When Severus saw that she was about to fall, he grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him.
They were looking at each other while their chests were touching.
While Hermione's hands were on his chest, Severus' hands were on her waist.
"Be careful, Miss Granger." he said quietly.
Hermione swallowed hard. "I tripped." she said with the same silence.
Involuntarily, he began to caress her waist with his hands. He felt like he was being sucked in while looking into her eyes. His heart was racing in his chest. "Careful, I don't want you to get hurt."
She smiled at his concern. "I'll be careful."
They both came to their senses when the alarm sound echoed in the office. Severus removed his hands and collected himself, returning to the laboratory with her behind him. He turned off the bottom of the boiler and checked it. "Successful."
Hermione started to look curiously. "May I smell it?"
He looked at her for a moment. "Be very careful, okay?"
"Ok." She approached the cauldron and in this way she also approached him. She leaned over the cauldron and took a deep breath.
There was a smell of grass, parchment, and a kind of sandalwood.
For a moment she wondered who it was, but then her eyes widened.
This smell...
It belonged to Severus Snape...
She was in love with Severus Snape...
"What did you smell?" Severus asked curiously and a little nervously. He didn't know who she was smelling and that was tense.
"I don't want to say." said Hermione, stepping back.
Severus wasn't sure how he should feel. He respected her decision and approached the cauldron and smelled it.
Potion ingredients, library scent, lavender and vanilla.
Severus swallowed when he smelled it. He knew this scent. It belonged to the girl next to him.
To Hermione Granger...
"What smell did you smell?" asked Hermione nervously. She was afraid of the answer he would give.
"I don't want to say." he said sarcastically. He stepped back and tried to collect himself. "Anyway, that's enough for today."
Hermione sighed as she realized she had to go. "Okay," she said and smiled. "Good evening, Professor."
"Good evening, Miss Granger."
Hermione left the laboratory, grabbed her book from the table and left the office.
It was an awkward moment for the two of them.
Hermione Granger has confirmed that she has a crush on him ...
Severus Snape realized that he was in love with her...
