The Encounter with Swiftrunner

The forest grew darker as the group ventured deeper, the air thick with tension. The trees loomed high above them, their twisted branches creating a canopy that blocked out most of the light. Every step felt heavier, as though the forest itself were trying to hold them back.

Then, a low, guttural growl broke the stillness. The group froze, weapons drawn, as glowing yellow eyes appeared from the shadows ahead. A massive werewolf emerged, its light brown fur bristling, its muscular frame radiating raw power and aggression. Its claws dug into the earth as it advanced, sharp teeth bared in a snarl.

Behind it, several other werewolves stepped into view, their growls echoing ominously through the forest. The leader raised a clawed hand, silencing his pack.

"You should not have come here, outsiders" the werewolf growled, its voice deep and rasping, filled with barely restrained rage. "I am Swiftrunner, protector servant to the Lady of the forest. You trespass where you do not belong."

Alistair stepped forward, his shield raised. "We're here to stop the curse," he said firmly. "The Dalish are suffering because of it, and we've been sent to put an end to this."

Swiftrunner let out a barking laugh, his yellow eyes glinting with fury. "End it? You do not even understand it! You come at the bidding of that ancient liar, Zathrian, thinking yourselves heroes. You are nothing but pawns in his game. Turn back now, or I will show you the price of meddling in things you do not understand."

Leliana spoke next, her voice calm but edged with steel. "Then help us understand, Swiftrunner. If there is more to this curse, tell us what we're missing. We are not your enemies."

Swiftrunner's snarl deepened, his claws flexing as he advanced a step. "You speak as though you care, but you carry the stink of Zathrian's lies. You come here to kill, not to listen. I will not let you harm the Lady or this forest!"

"Who is the Lady?" Cullen asked, his sword gripped tightly.

"She is the guardian of the forest, the heart of this curse," Swiftrunner growled. "She is Witherfang, and you will not touch her!"

The group exchanged glances, the revelation hanging heavily in the air. Alistair's expression hardened as he turned back to Swiftrunner. "We're not going anywhere. If Witherfang is at the center of this, we need to see her."

Swiftrunner roared, his fur bristling as he lowered into a predatory stance. "Then you leave me no choice. My pack will protect her, even if it means tearing you apart!"

Swiftrunner and his pack lunged forward, the forest exploding into chaos. Alistair braced himself as Swiftrunner slammed into his shield with incredible force, driving him back several steps. The werewolf snarled, his claws scraping against the metal as he pushed forward.

Leliana darted behind a tree, loosing arrows with practiced precision. One struck a werewolf in the side, causing it to howl in pain, but it continued its charge. Zevran intercepted it, his daggers flashing as he danced around the beast, striking at its exposed flanks.

Cullen roared as he swung his blade in wide arcs, keeping two werewolves at bay. "They're stronger than they look!" he shouted, his jaw clenched with effort.

Tamlen, standing at the back, let out a low growl, his body trembling. His already twisted form seemed to warp further, his claws elongating as the Taint within him flared. With a snarl, he leapt into the fray, tackling a werewolf to the ground.

"Tamlen, stop!" Alistair shouted, but the elf was beyond reason. He tore into the werewolf with wild ferocity, his movements more beast than man.

Swiftrunner's eyes flicked to Tamlen, his snarl twisting into something that almost resembled pity. "You!" he growled. "You carry the mark of the mirror. You are already dead. Your fight is in vain!"

Tamlen roared in defiance, but Swiftrunner paid him no more heed. The battle continued, brutal and relentless, until several of the werewolves lay dead. Swiftrunner, seeing his pack falter, let out a commanding howl.

"Enough!" he bellowed, retreating into the shadows. "You fight without understanding. Turn back, or you will share the fate of those you claim to help. The Lady will not forgive your ignorance!"

With that, Swiftrunner and the remaining werewolves disappeared into the forest, their howls fading into the distance.
