Persi's interview: They have video games at Ponderosa. I've never played a video game before. They're so much fun! I'm going to buy a system for my family when I get home. I love My Glam Life. I built a huge mansion with three pools for my virtual me I made.
Enzo's interview: Did you know if you jump on a bed hard enough you can break the springs? I didn't know that. I told them they could use some of my prize money to pay for it, but they said it was no big deal.
Lana Mason- District Six female (17)
It was a beautiful afternoon on the island. It was windy. I'd always liked windy days. I liked to daydream that the wind was so strong it picked me up into the air like a leaf. Every day on the island had been pretty to someone like me who grew up in a cramped apartment building in a smoggy city, but today was especially pretty.
I found Octavia squatting by our fire and poking at it. There was nothing wrong with the fire. She just wanted something to do.
"I'm going to climb the hill and look over the cliffs," I said. "Want to come with?"
Octavia's head twitched at the sound of my voice. She looked smaller than normal as she looked up at me.
"Oh. Sure," she said after a pause, like she wasn't sure she'd heard me right.
There were cliffs around most of the island. Most were blocked off by brush or too far to walk to, but there was a nice clearing not too far from camp. You could sit on the big limestone rocks away from the edge and see the ocean beneath you and all the way out to forever. On days after it had rained, you could watch little streams pour over the side. For a while Octavia and I scrambled around on the rocks, poking into holes between them and chucking a few over to watch them make a big splash. It was clear Octavia's mind was somewhere else. It was also clear where it was. We were sitting side-by-side on a big flat rock when I said it.
"It's okay if you vote for me."
Octavia shrunk into herself. She looked away, her face pulled tight.
"I don't mind," I repeated. It was clear this was my last day on the island. I'd thought it would come a lot before this. I'd never thought I would win and I was just happy to have been here at all. But Octavia didn't see that yet.
"It could be Leo," she half hedged and half offered.
"Then it would just be next week," I said. "Don't worry about it. You have to put your baby first. I have more than I need already. This is plenty."
Octavia looked a little closer to me, but not right at me. "I don't want it to be like this." Her voice was shaky.
"I'm just glad it's not a real Hunger Games. That would really suck," I said, hoping to lighten the mood.
Octavia's eyes were red when she finally looked at me. "I don't want it to have to be like this. I don't want to have to be so cold. I don't want to make these decisions." A shell seemed to fall off from all around her. "I wish I could bring Drusus and we could stay here forever. None of that stuff is here. I don't care if we have to poop in the woods." She did one of those laughs where it's that or cry. "It would be worth it."
It really didn't matter, me going home. We'd always known this would be temporary. There were other things that could last forever.
"It will get better. Even if you don't win, you've gotta have enough money soon. And we'll still be friends." I loved how Octavia's face lit up. "They're gonna want a lot of reunions and stuff, so we'll see each other a lot."
"I didn't think there were people like you in the world," Octavia said.
"There's a lot of bad people, but there are good ones, too. Like Leo," I said mischievously. "You can't vote for him, or he might not want to marry you."
"Nu-uhhhh," Octavia vainly denied, covering her face with her hands.
"Yeah-huh," I said. "Tavi and Leo sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g…"
Isabella Disney-Busattil- Host
Usually I knew before the council who was going home. I had access to all the footage, after all. Sometimes contestants pulled a sneaky and didn't vote the way I thought, but I'd never been wrong yet about who was going home. It didn't take a genius this time around. Leo and Val looked positively miserable. Shep seemed to feel rather guilty about his immunity necklace. All four of the safe contestants had Octavia and Lana were sitting right next to each other and Lana was relaxed at council for the only time other than her immunity.
"If anyone has a hidden immunity idol and would like to play it, now would be the time," I said. I also knew who had the idol and that they seemingly weren't going to use it, so no surprises there.
"Once the votes are read, the decision is final." I opened the first vote. "Lana."
I opened the second vote. "Lana."
I opened the third vote. "IDK. Val," I read aloud.
"Hey, man," Val said against background laughter.
I opened the third vote. "Twentieth eliminated and seventh member of the jury: Lana." It was a strange vote this week. As unanimous as possible, and yet I knew from the cameras that every one of them had offered to share some of their prize money with the girl they voted for.
Octavia stood up alongside Lana. I waited as they hugged. Then Lana walked to the fire and picked out a torch. Her smile didn't falter as I snuffed it. She turned and waved at the rest of the tribe.
"See you around."
Lana's final interview: I had such a great time! I rode a horse and went to a spa and made a best friend. I'm not counting Evelyn because she's my girlfriend and that's different from a normal friend. But anyway I had a great time and it was so much fun.
Twentieth eliminated: Lana Mason
Lana was the cinnamon roll of this cast and got a proportional boost because of it. It could have gone the other way, with her getting targeted for being such a tempting winner, but this story overall has had a pretty genial vibe, which is nice. Lana came out and had the time of her life, and now she'll go home with a bolstered sense of self-esteem and the knowledge that she can do better than her family treats he
r. She did so well I thought she might possibly win, judging from the votes. Not quite, but pretty close.
