Chapter 1: Origin
"Deku, come on, let's go!" a voice called out.
Izuku, shaking his green locks, looked up and around, watching at the many people walking in crowds on the sidewalks, while the cars passed by the street, their engines rumbling. His eyes turned to his childhood friend Katsuki, a boy with ash-blond hair and red eyes, waving at him to come to him, so he quickly ran up to catch up to him, while dodging the people on the way.
"Sorry, Kacchan, I was a bit distracted," the green-haired boy explained, rubbing the back of his head.
"Well, I hope it's 'cause your Quirk will activate soon," Katsuki responded, resuming his walking while his friend followed closely behind.
"Yeah, that's what I am hoping for..."
At the other side of the street stood a public park area, with a lot of people milling about, particularly a family of five – the parents, two children, and an elder man who could only be a grandfather – having a picnic.
At one side, the father was flying a kite with his son, teaching the child how to hold it, before letting him on his own – and left him unattended for just a moment. Unfortunately, the two-year-old child's hands were not strong enough to keep a hold of the line when a strong wind blew, ripping the kite away. The toddler did his best to chase after it, unaware that he was inching closer to the road and that a truck was approaching at moderate speed.
It was then that the grandfather realized that his grandson had veered away in a dangerous direction, and stood up.
"Wait, don't let him walk into the road!" he called out, catching his family's attention before they turned to where he was pointing.
"My baby!" the mother exclaimed. "Get him!"
The father quickly turned and ran as fast as he could to reach his son, same as the grandfather did, but they were far too far to reach the child.
But, on the other side of the street, someone else was closer.
Izuku had stopped paying attention to whatever Katsuki had been talking about when he heard the screaming. He saw the child following a flying kite, the men attempting to reach the child but tripping and falling – and, most importantly, the truck coming fast, and the driver realizing all too late that a little boy had accidentally walked into his path as he grabbed the line. The truck's wheels started to squeal, but it was obvious that it would not stop in time, as the father vainly tried to reach out to his son.
From the young viridian's point of view, everything had gone blank for a second before he was suddenly on the other side. For everyone else watching, it was as if Izuku's body had suddenly sparked before a green streak quickly crossed the street and snatched the child away from the road just moments before the truck passed by.
As he recovered from the sudden burst of light, Izuku realized he had something in his arms that had not been there before, and he looked down to see the same little boy he had noticed earlier, looking around confused, as the truck slid to a halt behind them.
"My son!"
"Deku!"
Quickly, the child's family ran up to him as Katsuki took advantage of the stopped traffic and crossed the street. The mother knelt down and gingerly picked up her son from Izuku's arms, crying as she held him close.
"Woah, Deku, was that your Quirk?" Katsuki asked, surprised at what he had just witnessed.
"I-I don't know, maybe..." Izuku muttered as he tried to make sense of what had just happened, when he was interrupted.
"Young man," someone said, and Izuku turned to look to the child's father and grandfather, bowing to him. "Thank you very much! We're eternally grateful!"
Blushing at the compliment, Izuku looked down at his hands and saw as a faint glow vanished, as he realized what had just happened. His life had truly changed for him, and Katsuki was grinning at seeing how his best friend had finally got his Quirk.
"The world changed two centuries ago when a child was born in Qing Qing City. While this would normally have no importance, this child was, somehow, born with a unique ability: he could glow like a light. Called the Luminiscent Baby, they were the first person in the world to be born with superhuman abilities, but not the last. As time passed, more people all over the world began to manifest that which had once been the matter of fiction—abilities that were beyond anything a human being had had—abilities that eventually came to be named as "Quirks." As the number of people with a Quirk grew, so did those who would use their newfound powers for criminal purposes—but so did those who decided to help law enforcement stop them.
Over time, quirks diversified in ways no one initially predicted. Researchers and heroes alike realized that these powers often fell into three broad "origin" categories:
- Meta-based quirks, tied to biological or evolutionary traits.
- Magic-based quirks, which seemed mystical or arcane.
- Tech-based quirks, functioning like advanced engineering or machine synergy.
Of course, rare quirks defied easy classification, reminding us that human potential could go far beyond simple labels.
It would not be the last change for the worse: several decades later, an infamous incident, the Pacific Slumber, shook the world when a monster appeared and struck America's western coast. This was the first time heroes were forced to use lethal force, because the monster was too strong, stronger than any villain before. And then, years later, humanity established First Contact with aliens: unfortunately, these aliens did not come in peace, attacking several places around the world. Fortunately, they haven't been seen since the last incident in 2165. But, still, everybody feared a return.
Humanity—at least those who fought to protect the innocent—answered by forming DEFENSE, a global paramilitary organization armed with the latest multitude of futuristic technology in gadgets, vehicles, superweapons, and even robots to allow the heroes to deal with the different threats to peace and justice along the way. Heroes would help stop villains, but for the most part, it was monsters—mutant creatures, ancient terrors hidden from the world, extraterrestrial beings, supernatural entities, and the just plain inexplicable—that they would rather fight, as for some reason, they would become stronger when doing so."
"That was the world Quirked humans had to deal with every week. It was certainly... interesting."
Izuku had been a fan of the Tokusatsu genre since he was three: Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, Giant Robo, Kamen Rider, Metal Hero, Super Sentai... he loved them all, and he had at least one wall dedicated to all the merchandise he could find of them. Tokusatsu had once been fiction, but the appearance of heroes, villains, monsters, and aliens had made it all too real – and people all over not only Japan, but most of Asia, had turned to watch the same shows and movies as a form of catharsis as the combination of so many big genres: colorful superheroes, giant monsters, mechs, martial arts, science and magic, with lots of fake collateral destruction!
But, if there was something he loved more, it was a particular Pro Hero. The one who always fought against his Godzilla figure whenever Izuku played with his toys. A hero called All Might.
All Might had been the first Hero he had learned about. He still remembered watching the video of his debut, where All Might single-handedly rescued hundreds of people from a collapsed building, always smiling, and that had excited Izuku to no end. That was when he knew what he wanted to be when he was older and developed his Quirk: he wanted to be like All Might, a Hero who would make everyone smile and save everyone.
Being told that he would likely never develop a Quirk had been a crushing experience
And then, he had developed his Quirk, and saved a little boy from being run over by a truck, and the child's family now considered him a hero. Upon learning of the event, his mother had promptly taken him to the same doctor that had once stated he was Quirkless.
"Well, it appears I was mistaken when I stated your son didn't have a Quirk, Midoriya-san," the doctor said as he observed Izuku demonstrating his newly manifested Quirk by running around at great speed.
Izuku's mother, Inko, was also staring in awe at her son. After the initial diagnostic, she had felt crushed at seeing her son's dream of becoming a hero vanish into thin air, but now she knew it was possible for him to achieve it.
"Why did it take longer to manifest than normal, doctor?" She asked as Izuku stopped running and checked his glowing hands.
"What kind of Quirk do you and your husband have, Midoriya-san?" the doctor asked, tapping his chin. Inko took a deep breath and wiggled her hands, making the two figurines resting on a nearby chair come floating into her hands.
"I can manipulate small objects if they are close to me, and Hisashi can breathe fire," she replied. The doctor nodded and showed her the image of an X-ray of Izuku's left foot.
"Midoriya-kun's Quirk manifestation has come later than the norm, and there are reasons why I believed him to be Quirkless. As you know, two joints in the pinky toe is usually a marker for Quirklessness. When you first brought your son here, his pinky toe had two clear joints, but it appears that the bones in one of them have fused since then. Whether the fusion took place because of his Quirk manifestation or whether he manifested because his bones fused, I'm afraid I cannot tell. However, I believe your son may have a very unique Quirk."
"How so? I mean, isn't Izuku's Quirk just super speed?"
"In today's hero society, Quirks typically fall under three major origins—Meta, Tech, or Magic," the doctor continued, pushing his glasses up. "But your son's Quirk doesn't seem to match any of those categories via the Quirk OSA (Origin Spectrum Analyzer). It displays traits that surpass normal physical, mystical, or technological capabilities. Because of that, I'm classifying the boy's Quirk origin as 'Unknown'."
"Huh?"
"I also have observed him emit some strange multi-colored glows from his pinky toe, something I have never seen in the years I have worked here. I believe this may actually be a sign of him having more than that. I suggest you to keep watch on him, he might gain further power at a late point."
Inko nodded as Izuku finally rejoined his mother and the doctor.
"It seems I owe you an apology for believing you are quirkless and crushing your dreams of being a hero, Midoriya-kun." The doctor said, bowing his head in shame and remorse.
"It's alright." Izuku smiled and nods in forgiveness. He know that the doctor was just doing his job.
"So, tell, what would you like to call your one-of-a-kind Quirk?"
Izuku pondered about it. If his Quirk was unique, then he should try to give it an unique name. And he also felt that it was likely to grow with time, let him do more things as he grew up.
"I... don't know what to call it."
"Hm, I think I have one, how about... Omni-Potent."
Izuku and Inko smiled at the name of the quirk. Sounds powerful.
"Thank you for the diagnosis."
It was just a while later that Inko and Izuku returned home, and the first thing Inko did was to hug her little boy.
"Izuku, I'm so proud of you! I already said that before, but, well, that family told me everything that happened at the park. So, I had to say it again," Inko said, smiling at her son.
"Thanks, mom!"
"Now, you have a Quirk. The doctor confirmed it. Are you happy that you can reach your dream easier?"
"Mom... if my Quirk is really that powerful... can I really... be a hero too?"
"Of course! You can be a hero, honey! I'm sorry for doubting you couldn't after you were initially declared Quirkless! You saved that little boy without a thought, you have what it takes to defend anyone in danger. Even Katsuki thinks the same! Never doubt yourself and keep your head up. Show the world that you are the true hero it deserves!"
Inko bitterly remembered a similar conversation that had taken place several months before. That night, she had had a different answer for him, one she had given between tears as she saw how crushed her baby boy was. This time, though, she was smiling as she tapped his nose, and Izuku answered with a smile of his own that shone through his teary eyes.
"Yeah! I'm gonna be like All Might! I'll fight for love, peace, and justice!"
"That's the spirit, Izuku!" Inko said, hugging her son again. She knew her son would need the encouragement, and even if she would rather see him find a safer goal, his happiness mattered to her more than anything else in the world.
"Mitsuki and I decided to celebrate this together, so we're going to the beach shore festival tonight."
"Yeah, let's go!" Izuku yelled in excitement.
The summer festival was as good as they had hoped. Lots of people were having fun, with kids running around and playing, while delicious smells filled the air. Inko, Mitsuki, and Masaru walked and talked with each other while they kept an eye on their sons, who were now sharing the playground area with the other children.
"I'm so glad for your boy, Inko. It's been months since the last time I saw Izuku smile so much, and the brat really needs the competition for when they go to hero college," Mitsuki told her best friend.
"Yes. I'm glad to see the two getting along again," Inko replied with a smile.
"I do wonder, though. What are the kids going to do in the future? From what you've told us, Izuku's Quirk is quite powerful, and I'm sure it's going to grow," Masaru pointed out.
"I'm only hoping for one thing from Izuku..." Inko said, giving a devious smile. "I just want to have so many grandkids to spoil in the future."
Inko's small cackle at the idea caused Masaru and Mitsuki to slightly freak out at the out of character behavior.
"Are you okay, Inko?" Mitsuki asked, concerned.
"Yes, yes, I am," Inko replied as she smiled at the couple, who only felt the sweat drop from dealing with her sudden mood shift.
Meanwhile, Izuku and Katsuki had decided to take a break from having fun at the playground and were sitting on a bench, watching the other kids goofing around with their Quirks.
"Heh, look at them. Their Quirks don't seem like much compared to ours!" Katsuki commmented.
"But, Kacchan, anyone could be a Hero if they just stuck their mind to the idea," Izuku countered, but Katsuki waved his hand.
"Who cares! I'm telling you this, Deku, you and I are gonna be the best number two and one ever!" the blond boy said, excited.
"Yeah, Kacchan!"
The two children bumped their fists, a show of their repaired friendship, as they went to jump off the bench to continue their fun at the festival.
"Hey, what's that thing up there?" someone asked out loud, pointing at the sky. Those who were nearby looked up and blanched as they saw a giant pterosaur-like creature flying over the festival scene. The creature chose that moment to make a strident screech, catching the attention of everyone that had not heard the person earlier.
"A monster!" a woman yelled.
The monster dove down at the crowd, which quickly scattered out of the way. Fortunately, the creature's size prevented it from changing its flypath, causing it to crash against a dirt ground and raise a dust cloud, while people fled from its sight.
Izuku joined his mother in their run to safety, but when he looked back he realized another child his age had tripped, and the monster was now advancing on him, clearly seeing the crawling kind as easy prey.
The monster opened its mouth, exposing a row of razor-sharp teeth, and attempted to pounce on the defenseless child, but suddenly an explosion hit it in the head, causing it to swerve away from the child.
"Oi, back off, punk!" Katsuki yelled at the dazed monster, his hand still smoking from the explosion he had fired. Izuku quickly ran up to the stunned kid and lifted him off the ground, causing him to wake up and begin running away as well.
"Kacchan, let's go!"
"Not yet, that thing's still kicking!" Katsuki replied, and indeed, the monster had regained its sense and soon turned to the two children that were facing it. Its attack charge was easily dodged by the children, and instead it struck a cooking stand, causing it to fly away and start burning down the nearby stands and other flammable objects. In seconds, a dense smoke cloud surrounded the area, with the two boys just barely able to see the monster. Needless to say, no one outside could even see what was happening.
"Izuku! IZUKU!" Inko called out, worried for her son.
"BRAT! WHERE ARE YOU?" Mitsuki yelled in an uncharacteristic burst of worry, while her husband tried to keep her from blindly plunging into the smoke while also worrying for his son.
Meanwhile, the two children were facing off the creature, trying to keep it from sidelining them as they circled around. The monster eventually decided he was done waiting and charged at Katsuki. The explosive boy jumped aside and fire another explosion into the creature's side. This time, though, it was able to tank the attack, and it swatted Katsuki aside.
By the time Katsuki recovered his wits from the attack, the creature had fully turned around and was ready to chomp down on him, but before it could actually do it Izuku ran in and grabbed the creature's jaw, struggling to hold it open due to the obvious disparity of strength between a fully formed monster and a not-even-five year old child.
However, Izuku was not done. As the monster began to recover itself, another spark of red electricity coursed the child's body, and with increased strength he not only pushed the creature back, he managed to shove it off several meters away. As the monster tripped and fell, Izuku turned and offered his hand to Katsuki, who was looking at his friend, stunned at the feat he had just achieved.
Still, he grabbed his friend's hand and stood back up, just as the monster came back to its feet, screeching so hard that the ground itself seemed to shake.
"Time to finish this, Deku!" Katsuki grinned savagely.
"Let's do it, Kacchan!" Izuku yelled, spirits high as his red glow intensified.
The two boys let out something akin to a battle cry as they and the creature charged forward. Katsuki readied his right hand, palm facing the monster, and Izuku pulled his arm back.
Just as the local Pro Heroes finally arrived to respond to the incident, an explosion shook the smoke away, leaving only a dust cloud as the frantic parents ran inside to find their children – only to be shocked at what was waiting for them.
On one side were their two – very tired – little boys, Katsuki being with his hands on his knees while Izuku supported himself with a hand on Katsuki's shoulder, both breathing heavily.
On the other side was the monster that had attacked the festival – but it was clearly dead: the pool of blood that was forming underneath the body, as well as the ruptured guts now spilling out on the reddened dirt, made it obvious it would not come back.
The crowd, even the Pro Heroes, were left stunned. Two children not even in primary school had just managed to stop a monster. It was obvious to everyone that the children's lives and that of those around would drastically change from such an event, but it would take time to see how.
13 Years Later, Beginning of the School Year
'That encounter was certainly a life changer for Katsuki and me,' Izuku thought, lost in his memories as he boarded the train for school. Even now, more than a decade after the event, people still recognized them both as the children who stopped a monster on their own. 'Today is our last year of high school, we need to begin planning for when we attend U.A...'
Izuku's attention was brought back to his phone, which was now playing a breaking news video.
"This morning, at 8:02 AM, a giant monster attacked Endoru City. Civilians were quickly evacuated to the emergency bunkers while DEFENSE answered to the threat."
Izuku looked up from his phone to notice shock and horror in the other passengers' faces: likely, they were also watching the news. Giant-sized monsters or Kaiju were a rarity in comparison to the smaller humanoid ones or Kaijin that were more likely to show up, and which were the ones heroes most dealt with. He looked back into the phone as it began to show a clip of the creature that is a green reptilian advancing into the city, before it was pummeled by several projectiles
"The monster was able to proceed into the city, causing damages worth several hundred million yens, before DEFENSE's Templar came into the scene, with a Walker unit taking point in fighting the monster," the anchorwoman continued.
The huge DEFENSE Templar mech showed up in the video clip, as the monster charged at the former. The two began to grapple, and soon it became obvious that the mech was just not strong enough to deal a killing blow to the monster-
"Canyon Cannon!"
The monster was suddenly kicked away from the mech by a giant blonde woman, causing it to crash into the ground, surrounded by the rubble of its previous destruction.
"Today is the day of my debut! My name is Mt. Lady, DEFENSE's newest Templar Pro Heroine! A pleasure to make your ass-quaintance!" she said, introducing herself while winking and posing sensually. Her purple and pale tan-colored, skintight bodysuit only helped in showing off her voluptuous figure. Needless to say, many men and women gazed the giant woman's 'assets'.
Izuku, though, just sighed in annoyance at the new heroine's showboating, particularly since the monster was still moving. Nonetheless, he pulled out his notebook - Hero Analysis for the Future, 14 – and began to take notes on her abilities and her probable Quirk, watching as the video showed the giant Pro Heroine and her mech partner eventually overwhelm it, with the latter using its energy cannon to finish it off, blowing the monster to pieces.
"DEFENSE's Backup team is already searching for people trapped in the rubble, while the clean-up and repair crews are already in site to begin the reconstruction of Endoru City. We will return later to the scene as more information is revealed. Until then, remain tuned in," she finished, and the program cut to the commercials.
"Man, every week gets interesting," Izuku muttered as he switched his phone to the next Kamen Rider Wizard episode in his list, eventually reaching his destination and leaving the train. He was sure someone had recognized him, but they had thankfully decided to leave him to his own devices rather than come to talk to him.
"Listen up, everyone! This is the moment where you should begin to seriously think about your future," the homeroom teacher said, holding up a stack of papers while smiling. "Now, you should have already turned in your career documents... but all of you want to become Pro Heroes, right?"
The entire class cheered as they began to show off their Quirks. Izuku was the only one who did not, just raising his hand as he kept writing in his notebook.
Izuku was very much changed from the nervous kid he had been a decade before. He was still a polite, compassionate and nice young man, willing to help anyone who needed his aid, but he held himself with confidence without slipping into arrogance. Being Aldera's top student and having a fairly powerful Quirk allowed him to keep his confidence where it was.
"Yes, yes, you are all excited about the idea, but remember, you can't use your Quirks in public until you get your Hero License," the teacher kindly reminded them.
Someone snorted. Izuku just rolled his eyes, but he still smiled: the one who had interrupted their teacher had also changed some in the last decade.
"Sensei! Don't believe for a second that Deku and me belong in the same class as these extras here!" Katsuki yelled. Izuku did not need to even look at his friend to know that he had his feet propped up on his desk, giving his usual arrogant smirk. "I don't want us to be seen in the same level as those who didn't kill a monster like we did!"
Izuku ignored him, still writing in his notebook. Thirteen years after the incident, Katsuki had become overconfident, rude, aggressive, and a self-centered ass – but in spite of all that, the two of them were still close friends, practically brothers, and Katsuki knew Izuku would be a great hero in his own way.
"What's the big idea, Bakugo?" one of their classmates asked, angrily.
"Shut up, fodders!"
"Ah, yes, Bakugo-kun" the teacher said, perking up. "I heard you and Midoriya are going to apply for U.A., right?"
Izuku stopped writing and turned his attention to his close friend, as he acted even more arrogant than before.
"Yeah, the best college for Heroes," one of the other students whispered. "I've heard that it takes an average of 80 percent just to be able to apply this year."
"Not to mention that the entrance examination is the most difficult, as well!"
Everyone's mood dropped at the mention of the exam. Instead of glaring at the boasting Katsuki, several of them looked down in sadness, while the others became a tad fearful of the situation. Only Katsuki smirked at the situation.
"I'm not that surprised that all of you cower at the mention of U.A.! I will ace the entrance exam!" he shouted, jumping on the desk. "I will surpass All Might and become the greatest hero the world has ever known! My name will be inscribed on the list of best heroes in history!"
Before anything else could be said, a bell rang, signaling the end of class. Izuku quickly packed up his things as Katsuki jumped off the desk.
"Come on, Deku, lunchtime!"
"Alright, coming," he replied. Izuku noted that his path to become his own Symbol of Peace had just gotten harder and more interesting – particularly after he and Katsuki enrolled into U.A.
Somewhere in the shopping district...
"Somebody stop that thief!"
A pile of gooey slime with egg-like eyes and sharp teeth slinked away from the crowd, carrying multiple stolen goods in its body, right under everyone's eyesight. The heroes identified him as a villain, not a monster, so he was targeted to be arrested and captured instead of killed.
"You can't catch me!" the slime-like thief laughed as he slipped through the fingers of one of the heroes trying to catch him, his voice as gross as his appearance.
"Someone is coming to help us, right?"
"There's no end to this kind of people!"
"No need to fear! There is indeed an end to them, BECAUSE I AM HERE!" a loud, heroic voice echoed: everyone turned to the voice, and their eyes widened in surprise.
"Look there!"
"No way!"
"Is that...?"
The last class for the day had ended, and everyone was heading off home or to do whatever they wanted for the afternoon. Izuku was the last to leave, packing up as he went over his plans.
'The entrance exams are ten months away. Maybe I could train Omni-Potent? I might be able to refine it more. Then I can catch up on the toku list, there's still a lot of things there,' he thought as he put in his notebook.
"Hey, Deku, wanna hang out at the arcade?" Katsuki asked.
"I'd love to, but I can't, Mom wants me to get a few things from the market," Izuku replied, shaking his head.
"How's Auntie Inko, though?" Katsuki asked, worried. Izuku's parents had recently decided to divorce, because, after years of barely seeing her husband Hisashi a few days a year, Inko had grown tired of his constant absence, and any feelings she might have had had vanished. The loss of feeling had been mutual, and Hisashi – who, the last he had heard, was in New York – had not contested the request. Neither Inko nor Izuku, who barely remembered his dad being at home either, were sad or bitter about it.
"She's doing fine," Izuku responded.
"Good, because the old hag wants to spend some time with her this week." Katsuki turned away, giving a handwave. "I'll be at the shopping arcade if you need me."
"Later, Kacchan." Izuku and Katsuki went their separate ways, and as he walked, Izuku looked up at the sky, thinking of how much things had changed since that fateful day at the summer festival.
In the time since then, he had found out that his Quirk had multiple aspects, each of which functioned like they were their own Quirk. Basically, Izuku had twelve Quirks in one, and each aspect of it kept evolving through every adversity he had had to face, becoming stronger as they grew.
As he passed a tunnel, he clenched his hand.
'Just you wait, world. Nothing's going to stop me from becoming a great hero!'
His train of thought was derailed by the sound of metal scraping on metal and concrete and a hideous smell that was worse for Izuku due to the super-senses he had gained from what he called his Thinker aspect, making his eyes water as he looked for the source: coming out of a nearby sewer was a large mass of green sludge that, somehow, had a pair of yellow eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth.
"Looks like I managed to slip past him," the sludge said.
'God, even his voice is disgusting,' Izuku thought, trying to walk away in silence, but the sludge saw him, and the toothy smile widened into a malicious grin.
"Oh, look, a very lovely body for me to wear!"
The sludge-like villain immediately threw several tentacles at Izuku, trying to grab him, but the latter was able to dodge the first limb before activating Shaker: a forcefield quickly blocked the other tentacles from touching him.
'This must be the thief they mentioned at the news!' Izuku tried to analyze the villain as he frustrated his attacks. 'Seriously, how do people have the bad luck to get Mutation Quirks like these?'
The villain, meanwhile, was clearly frustrated at being unable to get through the barrier: like most bullies, he hated it when his victims fought back.
"Oh, come on, kid! I promise you it's not going to hurt a lot. Just a little bit! Just let me take your body!" the villain said, jeeringly.
"You certainly don't work in the negotiation business," Izuku deadpanned as he activated Blaster. Soon, the air was filled with a barrage of energy bullets that pelted the slime villain, each of them ripping a chunk of sludge and splattering it against the tunnel's walls and ceiling.
"Gah, you shit! You think something like this will defeat me?" The masses of splattered sludge started to wiggle before the flowed back towards the villain's body, restoring it. "Get real!"
More tendrils of slime shot out, all of them trying to hit Izuku. The latter reacted quickly, readjusting his aim to fire at the incoming tendrils and causing them to splatter as well.
"No, I was just studying you. Turns out you are weaker than I thought."
"What did you say?" he asked in fury, continuing to throw more tendrils even though that tactic had not worked at all.
This time, though, Izuku concentrated energy in his arms and crossed them in the form of a plus sign (and if anybody asked, yes, the gesture was completely necessary, any similarities to one of his favorite toku characters' moves was a total coincidence).
"Ultra Beam!"
A large stream of energy erupted from the point where Izuku's arms crossed and hit the villain, causing its tendrils to explode in hundreds of droplets, even sending the main body skidding back. Sadly, it still was not enough to keep him down: Izuku had massively held back on his power to prevent his super move from being lethal. The remnants slowly returned to the main mass, much slower than earlier.
"You shit..." the villain growled, rearing back to attempt to punch Izuku.
"Guess you want more, then?" Izuku replied, charging up another Ultra Beam to knock the villain out.
"Have no fear, young man!" a voice boomed from the other side of the tunnel, and both Izuku and the villain looked in the direction of the voice.
There stood a large, heavily muscled man, dressed in a plain white t-shirt and camo green cargo trousers, held by a metal belt buckle with a stylized 'A' engraved on it. His most distinctive feature was his haircut, blond and short with two tufts springing from the fringe in the form of a 'V' shape. Even if he wasn't wearing his hero costume, there was no one living who would not recognize him.
"And why, you may ask?" Japan's Number One Pro Hero said. "Because I AM HERE!"
"All Might?" Izuku whispered. He couldn't believe he was seeing his favorite Pro Hero in action, and he clenched his hands with excitement.
"ALL MIGHT!" the villain howled in a mix of fear and fury. He promptly forgot about Izuku and sent a barrage of slimy tentacles towards All Might. With almost contemptuous ease, the large man avoided the attacks and rushed in, right arm drawn back.
"Texas..."
Izuku, knowing what was coming, quickly produced a forcefield to protect himself.
"SMASH!"
All Might's fist shot forward with such strength that the mere wind pressure spread the villain into small globs all over the tunnel. The villain barely had the time to gurgle a few unintelligible words before All Might picked up a large soda bottle and gathered the remains of the sludge – eyes and mouth included – within it.
"Are you alright there, young man?"
Realizing that All Might was talking to him, Izuku dispersed the forcefield and looked up to see the grin his idol was known for as the Pro Hero approached him.
"Uh, yeah! I'm perfectly OK, All Might, you arrived just in time like you always do!" he exclaimed, admiration obvious in his voice. All Might laughed loudly, causing Izuku's grin to widen in excitement.
"Well, I'm glad to hear that, young man! I was persecuting this miscreant as it escaped into the sewer system, and I'm sorry that you were forced to defend yourself until I managed to catch up! I don't usually make rookie mistakes like that, but thanks to you, the villain is captured!" All Might replied, making a pose and grinning as his teeth sparkled under the sunlight.
'Oh, man, he's so much cooler in person!' Izuku thought as his inner fanboy took over, so much that he probably had stars in his eyes.
"Ahahahaha!" the hero guffawed merrily. "Still, you must have quite the Quirk to hold out against this character for so long. Might I ask what your Quirk is?"
"Oh, my Quirk is called Omni-Potent!" Izuku said with an anxious tone. "It allows me use twelve different aspects, which each manifest different colored energy and evolve with newer abilities and powers as I keep struggling against adversity, making me more powerful and less predictable, so I can overcome any situation!"
'My word, that's a very powerful Quirk!' Toshinori Yagi mused as he listened. 'If his Quirk can evolve to deal with anything he faces, then he will be a formidable Hero indeed! Wait... I think I've seen him before.'
"Aren't you the boy that took down a monster in the festival nearby twelve years ago?"
"Yeah, that was me and my friend."
"I see... that is, indeed, a special Quirk, my boy," the hero replied.
"You really mean that?"
"But, of course!" All Might laughed, proud.
"Do you think that I can be a hero, All Might?"
"Do you want to be a hero, young man?" he asked instead.
"More than anything," Izuku said immediately, with a light of determination sparking in his eyes.
"Then that is what matters," All Might said firmly. "A Quirk does not make someone a hero; a hero is made by their own will. Regardless of what one's Quirk appears to be or what people say it looks like, so long as you have the desire and determination to strive to become a hero, you can become one. Your name, young man?"
"Midoriya Izuku, sir!" Izuku answered.
"Midoriya-shonen, take pride in your Quirk," the Pro Hero said reassuringly. "The fact that you protected yourself and another from a dangerous monster at age four for several minutes is nothing short of impressive, nevermind how you and your friend slayed it in a fight. Believe me when I say not many people your current age would be able to accomplish that much against monster or villain. As long as you persevere and don't give up, my boy, you can indeed become a hero! A great hero, may I add!"
Izuku felt the tears filling his eyes. In spite of everything he received from others like his mother and close friend, he had still sought validation and recognition for his hopes for the future... and now his personal hero had provided it. Could he be blamed for getting emotional?
"Thank you so much!" he said with fervor, before hesitating to continue, only to blurt it out. "I'm planning on applying to U.A. when I graduate from high school!"
"My alma mater, eh? Well, Midoriya-shonen, you had better train yourself to the bone, for the Entrance Exam is extremely strenuous, and what you will undergo there is not easier!" All Might warned him, putting the bottle in one of his cargo pants' pockets.
"I will, sir!" Izuku replied, nodding so fast that All Might was slightly worried it would actually fall off. "Wait, before you leave... could you sign my notebook?"
Glad that he had, on a whim, put Notebook #1 in his backpack today, Izuku opened it precisely on the pages he had left empty in case he had the chance to meet his favorite hero. All Might gave a mighty guffaw and happily agreed to sign, writing his signature across two pages before returning the notebook.
"There you are, my boy. Now, I must take this thief to the authorities now. Fare well and I wish you the best of luck at U.A.!"
With that sentence, his world-famous smile and a mighty leap, All Might was gone.
Meanwhile, Izuku felt that the smile on his face would never vanish, as if today had suddenly become the best day of his life.
"Not only did I meet All Might, but he said I could become a great hero! And I got his autograph today! I gotta tell Kacchan!"
Izuku started to run, using his Quirk to speed his way through to the shopping arcade, completely forgetting he was meant to go to the market in his excitement.
A few blocks away, Yagi Toshinori, the man the world knew as All Might, leaned against the railings as he tried to recover his breath. However, anyone looking would notice that he looked different from his heroic persona: he certainly looked like less muscled.
'Giving up One for All to my son may have kept me from being able to fully use my power, but the New Order I have is a decent alternative,' Toshinori thought. 'At least, I can continue being a hero without worrying about potential setbacks.'
"Alright, I'd better get this thief to the police, as I told Young Midoriya," the man said, nodding firmly, before taking a deep breath as he swelled up to his muscle form. "Hahaha! And away I go!"
Unbeknownst to him, the bottle containing the sludge had not been firmly secured, and as he jumped it slipped out of his pocket and bounced between several appliances and walls before landing in an alleyway, bursting from the sudden pressure change.
"I'm free..." the villain croaked as he drew in enough water from a few puddles, reconstituting himself to a facsimile of his form. "That goddamned kid! If he hadn't resisted, I wouldn't have been caught by All Might! I'll make him pay if I see him again!"
Rebuilding himself to a passable size, the villain sloughed off as he sought a body he could hide in and plot his revenge on both All Might and that damned boy that had stopped him from escaping.
"You're shitting me!" Katsuki literally gawked at his childhood friend in disbelief. "A villain attacked you and you got saved by All Might?!"
"Yeah!" Izuku exclaimed, still running the excitement wave from his previous encounter. "He said that I did a good job holding out against the villain for so long! If he hadn't shown up, I would have finished him off! I even got an autograph!"
"Lucky bastard! And of course you would have, villains couldn't hold a candle compared to the monster we killed," the blond-haired boy said smugly. "But, seriously, how the hell did you manage to get ambushed by some low tier villain while out shopping?"
"It isn't as if I had a choice on the matter." Izuku pouted. "But All Might thinks I could become a great hero, so let's do our best in U.A.!"
Katsuki's grin became savage.
"Couldn't have said it better myself, future Number Two Hero! Come on, wanna have a snack before going back home?"
"Sure," Izuku replied, following his friend.
As the teens left the premises, Izuku got a feeling that someone was looking at them, but he did not give it much attention until they reached a narrower shopping area. That was when Thinker blared a sense of danger, and Izuku tackled his friend out of the way just as a slimy arm slammed down right where he had been standing. Turning around, he spotted the same mass of vomit green sludge he thought had already been vanquished.
"VILLAIN! EVERYBODY LEAVE!"
Thankfully, everyone nearby had the common sense to clear out as soon as the order broke them out from their stupor. The villain was easily recognizable from his earlier rampage, which had been broadcast through the local news. The only person not walking away was Katsuki, who stood next to Izuku's side, small explosions already popping in his palms as he primed himself for battle.
"This the weakass trash that attacked you? Fucking gross," the explosive boy growled.
"Don't let him grab you, he tried to kill me because he wanted to use my body as a disguise," the greenette warned his friend. Katsuki scowled, but a feral grin spread itself across his lips.
"Like I'm gonna let this pile of puke over there get fuckin' near me."
"Well, now, just the little brat I was looking for!" the villain gurgled, attempting to be menacing as he plodded after Izuku. "You owe me one, kid! I got caught by that bastard because of you, and I only escaped because of sheer dumb luck! Now I'm gonna take it out on you!"
"I'd like to see you try, you're still a weakling!" Izuku fired back. Sure enough, the villain got easily riled up again and he roared as he bulged up before firing dozens of thin tentacles at the two teens, trying to grab or lash at them.
Both boys were faster than it, though, and they leapt out of the way without an issue.
"DIE!" Katsuki snarled, turning his right hand on the nearest tentacle before letting off an explosion, severing it from the main mass and causing droplets to spread across the ground. His victorious grin turned a grimace, accompanied by a twitching eyebrow, as he realized the scattered slime was moving on its own and slowly pulling itself back towards the original slime.
"Tch, the slimy bastard's a lot more resilient than he looks," he growled out in irritation. A no-name extra of a villain being able to withstand (or at least mostly ignore) his Quirk was annoying. Goddamn, were regenerators annoying!
"His regeneration's not limitless," Izuku pointed out as he used his Shaker forcefield to block any tentacle that got near them. "The more you blast off, the longer it takes for him to pull it back together and the more it drains his stamina. A blast big enough to scatter his entire body into small pieces will knock him out in an instant, that's how All Might beat him."
"Hah! Dream on kiddies, neither of you've got anywhere near the power to match up with that smiling bastard!" The villain barked out a laugh, though Izuku noticed something else.
"Then why are you keeping your distance with us? You said our power is nowhere near All Might, so you shouldn't have any problem. Oh, right, you're too weak to even beat two teenagers without hero experience. What a joke."
Izuku just could not help himself, but he had a good reason to do so.
"THAT'S IT! I'VE HAD IT WITH YOUR MOUTH!" With a roar, the monstrous villain surged forward again, aiming straight for the target of his wrath.
"Kacchan, I have a plan, we've got to lure the villain away!" Izuku shouted.
"Where?" Katsuki asked, palms sparking from the urge to blast something with his Quirk.
"The park! The one where I rescued that kid! There shouldn't be many bystanders!" he replied, confidently, before activating his Mover aspect and speeding away. "Let's go!"
"Hey, wait up, don't you dare leave me behind! Explosive Speed!" Katsuki shouted, pointing his hand behind himself and triggering a powerful explosion that propelled him right behind his friend.
"Get back here!" the villain screamed, pursuing the two teenagers as fast as he could, only for a large muscular man dressed in blue and black to get into his path.
"Not so fast, villain!" Death Arms, the Punching Hero, interrupted him and threw a punch, only for the slime to easily dodge it and swat the hero aside.
"Lacquered Chain Prison!" another voice shouted, and a flurry of tree branches suddenly twisted and turned around the villain, trying to bind him in place. The up-and-coming Pro Hero rookie, Kamui Woods, was in place and ready to fight crime.
"Get out of my way!" the living sludge shouted. Bulging once more, he exploded through the chinks in the wooden binding, splitting himself in three streams of sludge (each carrying his eyes and mouth) before reforming and continuing pursuit, irritated at the Pro Heroes getting in his way
"Blast it. Backdraft, stop him!" Kamui Woods called out. The firefighter-like hero quickly aimed his spigots and brought up a water net barrier in front of the villain, but the latter just scoffed and went through it, absorbing water to strengthen himself, and finally reaching his target – who seemed to be waiting for him at a public park.
"Here he comes," Izuku warned, his arms glowing.
"This plan better work, Deku, or I'm gonna kick your ass!" Katsuki barked as he put his hands together, left hand forming a circle against the right palm.
"It will, I'm sure!"
The villain plodded towards them while anyone nearby just jumped out of his way, not that the former cared about them.
The moment the villain got close enough, Izuku acted.
"Kacchan, now!" he roared, making an L sign with his arms. "ULTRA BEAM TIGA!"
"AP SHOT!" Katsuki yelled, firing his explosion through the circle he had formed.
The energy fired by Izuku, combined by Katsuki's concentrated explosion, created such a bright light burst that everyone around was forced to cover their eyes to avoid getting blinded.
The villain had been moving too fast, got hit by the full force of both attacks, and the bang was loud enough to almost completely cover the shriek of rage, fear, and panic the villain let out. Seconds later, as the result of the attack calmed down, the entire park was covered in small globs of green sludge, and the eyes and teeth were tangled in the swings at one side of the playground. The villain was unconscious, and in the middle of it stood Izuku and Katsuki, tired but victorious.
And, just like that, the danger was over. The witnesses started to cheer on the two teenagers, who high-fived in congratulations.
"Holy shit, that was awesome!" Katsuki yelled out. "First we took down a monster and now we defeated a villain! We're definitely going to be top heroes for sure, Deku!"
"Yeah, we're making a name for ourselves even before we apply for U.A. Think we should head home now?"
"Not yet, looks like those heroes wanna scold us for doing their job," Katsuki snorted, pointing at the three Pro Heroes that had tried to stop this villain, now waiting at the shopping center entrance and clearly ticked off at them.
"Alright, let's get over and done with it, then." Izuku groaned. He was uneasy about getting scolded by heroes, but it looked inescapable. Though, what did they expect the two of them to do when they were being chased by a villain? Give up and let themselves be drowned in slime?
As it turned out, Kamui Woods, Backdraft, and Death Arms went on for fifteen minutes about the impropriety of their actions before Katsuki's tenuous hold on his temper snapped and fired back at the three heroes for not actually doing anything worthwhile to stop the villain, while he and Izuku had been forced to take care of him.
That had not endeared him to the heroes, particularly Death Arms, but Kamui Woods admitted that the teens' actions had fallen within the range of the self-defense clauses of Quirk law. Given that the villain had clearly targeted Izuku with the intention of killing him, and that Katsuki was also being targeted by proxy, the two of them had the right to defend themselves. In the end, he let them off with a warning and shooed them away, before the three heroes joined in the effort to gather up all the scattered pieces of the villain from the area.
"Tch. Damned extras," Katsuki grumbled. He knew that none of the heroes on duty today had graduated from U.A., that they were nowhere near the top of the rankings in any particular way and that they had done nothing to impress him personally. Thus, the Explosion user had mentally relegated them to the role of supporting characters, barely better than background characters, and that was only because they were Pros and deserved some acknowledgment for that.
They were beneath his notice, so he treated them as irrelevant.
"Kacchan, you shouldn't have been mean to them," Izuku said, reprovingly. "They were just doing their jobs..."
"Yeah, right! You and me did all the heavy lifting for them, Deku!" the blond boy scoffed, arrogantly. "We kicked that pile of puke's ass without any help from them, and now they're just bein' pissy because the real main heroes showed them up!"
As the two boys kept themselves busy talking to each other, Toshinori observed them with curious eyes. It had taken him a while to realize that he had lost the bottle containing the villain, and by the time he had managed to track him down it was to see him follow Young Midoriya and his friend into the park.
He smiled. He could see the potential greatness from them, and could tell they were going to make waves in the future.
'Those two... they possess a truly tremendous amount of raw power. They are young, but they still have put a lot of effort in training to use their Quirks. That incident with the monster must have propelled them to become stronger since they were children. I can't wait to see them when they apply for U.A...'
His musings were derailed when he felt a vibration in his pants' pocket. Toshinori picked up the phone, and when he saw the caller ID saying 'Son', he pressed the answer button and spoke.
"Hello... yes, I saw it, my bad... yes, I'm done, I'll be home soon... you didn't have to cook for me, but thanks! See you at home, kid." Toshinori hung up the phone and replaced it in his pocket, shaking his head as he began to make his way back home.
Somebody else had watched the entire fight as well. This one was a blond woman, dressed in purple and orange tights, smiling as she kept an eye on the green haired boy, a hand on her chin.
"That kid is good," said Mount Lady, DEFENSE's newest heroine for Templar. "He hasn't been to hero college yet, and he's already able to fight like a professional. Perhaps I should keep a close eye on him, the bosses might be interested in him."
With a smile, the Pro Heroine resumed her patrol, already planning how to present this event in her job.
Several miles away, at a tall skyscraper building that housed the headquarters to one company that had survived since before the Era of Quirks, a tall man with well groomed black hair and blue eyes sat behind his desk, tossing around a Super Sentai figure as he considered future plans.
"Omocha-san, we have been a sudden increase in requests for merchandise of Ultra series," a woman said, barging into his office.
Sofubi Omocha, CEO of Bandai Co., turned to his co-worker with a raised eyebrow as he put the figure down.
"Did something happen to cause this increase?"
"There's a video making the runs on the Internet." The woman pulled out her phone and opened a video of a fight between a villain and two teenage boys that, judging by the time stamp, had to have happened barely a few hours before. Omocha was impressed when he saw the latter soundly defeat the former, and he quickly pegged the green-haired young man as the cause of the demand increase: as a fan of the genre, it was easy to identify Ultraman Tiga's move. Their appearance twigged on another memory, though, and it took him a while to identify why.
"Well, I'll be damned, I've seen those two before. They killed that pterodactyl monster thirteen years ago."
As the woman checked the phone and began to compare the teens' faces to what she remembered of the event, Omocha stood up and watched the setting sun from the window as he smiled.
"It seems this world we're in will just keep on being interesting. I have a feeling that this generation of heroes will be the best one in history."
