The Camera

Lydia sat down at the kitchen table, placing her cereal bowl in front of her.

She slowly took a bite, crunching as she stared at the wall.

Hey Mama. I miss you. I know it's been over a year since you left, but I still haven't forgotten you. I won't. I promise.

"Lydia! I have something for you!" Delia announced as she arrived on the stair landing.

Her step daughter looked up curiously. "What is it?"

She presented a neatly wrapped gift box. "Why don't you open it and find out?"

Lydia set down her spoon, taking the present.

She unwrapped it quickly, having no clue what it could possibly be.

Gasping, she gazed down at the camera in her hands. "Delia,"

She sat down. "I thought you could use a new camera. I know, the other one is from your mom, and I don't want this to take it's place, but I didn't think having a second would hurt." she quietly explained, looking up. "So? What do you think?"'

"I love it."

Delia clapped her hands together. "Sucks-yes!"

Lydia stood up and hugged her. "Thanks."

"Did you see what's in the bottom of the box?"

Just then, Charles came down, stopping on the stairs to not interrupt their moment.

Lydia shook her head.

She stepped back over, lifting the tissue paper up as it revealed several pieces of paper sitting on the bottom.

Picking it up she turned them over, reading the top of the page. "Adoption papers?" she looked her dead in the eyes. "You-You want to adopt me?"

Delia nodded firmly. "Your father and I have been married just under a year now, I figured it was time, if you'll have me."

She bit her lip. "Sure."

"Sure?!"

"Yeah!" she laughed, pulling her out of the chair and throwing her arms around her. "Thank you."

"You are very welcome."

Charles came into the room, grinning. "So, what did I miss?"
