VO: This is Berk. For generations, it was Viking against the dragon. The battles were ferocious... then one Day, everything changed.
Hiccup is seen flying over the sea stacks with his mate. They greet a few of their Nadder subjects, who are seeing some sun.
I met Toothless, initially known as Hakken. We reunited after being separated. Together, we show people that instead of fighting dragons, we can ride them, live with them, train them, and in my case become mates.
They soar up the side of another sea stack, surrounded by the blue sky and white clouds. The mates encounter a Red Monstrous Nightmare named Hookfang, with Hiccup's cousin Snotlout on his back. Nearby, there's a twin-headed green Zippleback named Barf and Belch, with the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut riding them. A red and brown female Gronkle named Meatlug carries a blonde, husky boy named Fishlegs on her back, and beside her is her mate, a blue and purple Gronkle named Rocky. Lastly, they spot a blue and yellow Nadder named Stormfly, accompanied by her mate, a blue and purple Nadder named Eragon.
Next to the female Nadder stands a blonde-haired, blue-eyed shield maiden named Astrid. Unlike the other riders and dragons, Astrid and Stormfly have yet to bond due to their past interactions during dragon training.
"Alright, today we are going to do a little exercise/competition. The point is for you to trust your dragon while doing a trick." Hiccup explained with a smile.
"And how exactly am I supposed to do that because my dragon doesn't trust me?" Astrid harps, peering harshly at Stormfly, which causes the nadder to growl.
"Easy Stormfly I know she's a lot and not very patient, but I still think you two can become great partners like the others." Hiccup gestures calmly, holding his hands out as the nadder places her snout into her Queen's hand.
"I trust you, Luna; it's just hard to move on from what occurred in the past between us." Stormfly squawked as her mate nuzzled her gently.
"Take it at your own pace. Stormfly, it's important for a successful bond for both rider and dragon to be comfortable, and if the dragon has a mate, then the rider and dragon's mate also need to form a bond. Otherwise the rider's dragon will always have to choose between its mate or rider, making the relationship strained and eventually broken." Toothless explains.
"So who's up first?" Hiccup asks, knowing the others are very competitive.
Uh, I should go. Fishlegs suggests lightly, only to be stopped by Snotlout.
"Me!"
"Actually, I think it is." Fishlegs tries again but is once again interrupted.
'Me!" Snotlout yells again with pupils as big as dinner plates, his overconfidence growing by the second.
"Sweet baby Thor, in a thunderstorm, someone go already!" Astrid yelled with anger, which made the children cry.
"Heh, keep your beautiful blue eyes on me, Astrid, because I'm about to light the sky on fire. And Hiccup, you should probably take notes because this is how you ride." Snotlout's confidence swelled as usual, but he was interrupted when Hookfang took off, diving toward the sea. The dragon swam inhumanly, leaving a screaming rider clinging on for dear life. Hookfang flew between two narrow sea stacks, scraping Snotlout's helmet against the rocky sides. Finally, the dragon soared into the clouds for a dramatic finish as Snotlout struggled to maintain his grip."HOOKFANG!" The younger Jorgenson screeches in visible fright as the nightmare comes and lands on the sea stack with a thud. He looks back at his rider with half-lidded eyes full of smugness. "I'm alive. I'm alive!" Snotlout yells in relief as the other riders look at him blankly, except Hiccup, who presses his lips together to hide his giggle. "I mean, of course, I'm alive." He adds, sounding cocky with his chest puffed out.
"Hookfang, you did good with the tricks, but please try not to kill my cousin. If you did, I'll never hear the end of it from Spitlout." Hiccup spoke in dragonese, though he didn't sound distraught with what the nightmare did. He looks down after he hears his mate's chuckle as well.
"Yes, my Queen. I apologize and will try not to be so harsh in the future. And thank you for the compliment." Hookfang cooed, his eyes brimming with smugness and shining with remorse.
"It's my turn! Ready, Meatlug?" Fishlegs asks as the gronkle wiggles in excitement. The two take off, circle the sea stack, and land in the same spot. "Yes, new personal best." The husky rider praised as he patted Meatlug's head.
"Good job, Meatlug. Are you not doing anything strenuous because of your pregnancy?" Hiccup asked curiously as his gaze traveled to the gronkle's growing belly, as a tiny spark of sadness flickered in his heart.
"Yes, my Queen, they're healthy and strong just like their sire." Meatlug coos as she nuzzles Rocky, who purrs softly.
"How is the bonding with Rocky going, Fishlegs?" Hiccup asked.
"Pretty good. He lets me on his back, and we have taken a few small flights a couple of times." Fishlegs explains as he slides off Meatlug and looks at the male gronkle, who lowers a little and allows his mate's rider to climb on. The pair then proceeded to take the same route Meatlug did.
"Okay, so does that count as two tricks or two in one?" Tuffnut asked, looking at his sister.
"Or is it one trick twice?" Ruffnut replied.
"I'm pleased that you're bonding with a decent human, Rocky, and you as well, Meatlug." Toothless acknowledged. To which both gronckles nod to their Alpha.
"My turn!" Ruffnut shouted.
"No, it's my turn." Tuffnut also shouted.
"Please make them stop." Both Barf and Belch whimpered as the twins shouted in the dragon's ears.
"Guys, please stop shouting; you're hurting Barf and Belch's ears. Dragons have very sensitive hearing, and besides, you have the same dragon, just a different head." Hiccup reminded. "Sorry." He whispers to the Zippleback.
"Thank you, Luna." They whisper back as they take off. At first, they are doing well, but then the twins begin arguing about the best route.
"Go left!" Ruffnut yells.
"No right!" Tuffnut argues.
"I said we're going left!" Ruffnut countered as she began to pull on Barf's head towards the left.
"You always make the decisions, and I'm deciding we're going right!" Tuffnut yelled as he tried to pull Belch's head to the right.
"Poor Barf and Belch." Hiccup whispers in pity for the zippleback, but his mate brushes his tail against the human's side.
"Don't worry, my love." The raven dragon smiles as he watches, with a hint of amusement in his eyes, as the twin-headed dragon throws the arguing twins into the air, ignores their screams of terror, and catches them mid-flight.
"OH, NO! WHOA! THIS IS AWESOME AND SCARY! AAAH! Tuffnut hollers as he falls onto Belch's head.
Once the Zippleback lands, the twins are seen with wide-eyed expressions, clinging onto the dragon's necks for dear life. "We almost died." Ruffnut panted.
"I know. Let's go again." The male twin exclaimed.
"Okay, Astrid, it's your turn, and please try to contain your anger." Hiccup warned.
"What? I have plenty of control over my anger. It's not my fault we can't get along." The blond shield maiden argues back as she mounts Stormfly, but the nadder seems uneasy, sensing the maiden's anger as her mate growls in a warning.
"Just follow us, Stormfly, and follow my lead, okay?" Hiccup suggests this while Toothless hovers over the sea stack, and the female nadder follows. The mates lead the two females out above the ocean and make simple turns around the sea stack. "Okay, so far so good."
"You are an excellent teacher, 'Mon amour.' The midnight-colored dragon praises his submissive, which causes Hiccup to blush, and he leans down and stares at his beloved with eyes full of fierce love as he kisses his beloved's forehead.
"Excuse me, but do you mind?" Astrid yelled loudly, breaking the mate's moment, which caused Stormfly to become startled, thinking that Astrid was going to attack her, and began to try and throw the shield maiden off.
"Whoa, easy Stormfly, Astrid, try to talk to her in a calming tone." Hiccup instructs.
"Hey, calm down, please. Stop it; this isn't fun. Stop Stormfly." The blue-eyed teen yelled with a hint of fright in her voice.
"Fagr hermaðr hlýða minn rǫdd
Nei, nauð því hugsjúkur."
Hiccup sang in a melodious dragonese voice, using his Queen's voice to calm the female nadder as Toothless slowly inched closer to the terrified dragon.
Stormfly's eyes go from terrified and slit to calm and dilated as her Queen's voice enters her ears and a sense of peace enters her, and her flight levels out.
"Go ahead and land Stormfly." The Alpha dragon commands, and the nadder nods as Astrid slides off with a huff. Hiccup and Toothless land next to them.
"What was that, Hiccup?" Fishlegs asked, looking at the auburn heir with piqued interest.
"Yes, you were singing and speaking in that peculiar language again." Snotlout adds.
The human mate sighs in frustration after repeatedly explaining the language.
Sensing his mate's frustration, Toothless folds his wings over him and tilts his head back, allowing his mate to reach his head. "Not every human is going to be as quick to understand things as you, my Hiccup," he says.
"I understand, but it seems they're still not paying attention to me." I've told them time and time again that it's Dragonese. I doubt they've ever heard me sing before. Hiccup replies in dragon language.
"Well, if you ask me, you have a lovely singing voice. Why don't we do our trick and then go and check on things in the village?"The Night Fury suggested, causing his human to blush as red as a tomato. He nodded at the suggestion and revealed himself back to the humans.
"Why did Toothless do that?" Astrid asked.
"He was just giving me a moment to calm myself, and we needed a moment since you ruined our other one in the sky." Hiccup scowled before turning his gaze to the others. "To answer your question, the language is dragonese, or the voice of dragons. I can speak it because of the mating mark and because of my mateship with Toothless, who is the Alpha." He explains. "As for the singing part, I've always been able to sing just never did in front of anyone before." He shrugs.
"Didn't know you could sing. Got a lovely set of pipes." Tuffnut responds with a modest, sincere smile.
"Thank you; now it's our turn." "Ready, love?" Hiccup pats his mate's side, who coos in response.
"Good luck, Alpha and Queen." All the dragons cheer as Toothless makes a vertical takeoff, then dives down the sea stack to the ocean.
Hiccup pulls up at the last second and shoots forward at breakneck speed. The two boys skillfully swerve in and out through the maze of sea stacks before coming across two conjoined soon as they approach close enough, the Auburn heir unhooks his metal leg and focuses intently on the bridge. "Alright, love, I'm going to try it again." Over the past few weeks, the young teen has attempted to successfully jump onto the bridge connecting two sea stacks, run over it, and land on his mate's back. Unfortunately, either nerves or the ever-evolving process of dealing with a metal leg always leads to mishaps, but today, Hiccup feels confident he will succeed.
"Please be careful, my love, and know I believe in you and will be here to catch you." Hiccup receives a reminder from his dominant mate as he leaps onto the bridge between the rocks while Toothless glides beneath. The one-legged boy runs across the rocky bridge and then jumps onto his mate on the other side. The boy and the dragon soar toward the sky, leaving the other riders in amazement and awe. Toothless then shoots out multiple plasma blasts, which explode like fireworks. It's obvious who won the competition. "Oh my Gods, I did it! I did it!" Overjoyed with his accomplishment, Hiccup cheers loudly and tightly grips his dominant mate's neck as all the other dragons unleash their blasts to celebrate his success.
"I'm so proud of you, my submissive." Toothless praised as he looked back, and his toxic green gaze glowed with profound pride; the bond was filled with pride for his mate as the pair flew towards the village.
"Well, I guess we know who won." What did you expect? Toothless is a night fury, and I am not sure about you, but he is somewhat frightful when Hiccup is absent." Fishlegs admits as the others nod, remembering a few rare times when the Night Fury wasn't near the chief's son, and they all felt nervous around the black dragon, like there was an aura about him.
"Well, it's time for us to head back home." Despite the dragon's absence, Ruffnut stutters nervously, feeling like the Night Fury still watches them. She and her brother quickly usher Barf and Belch into the air.
"Yes, I need to assist my brother in gathering firewood." Snotlout murmurs and fidgets with his fingers as he and Hookfang depart.
"You really think Toothless is scary?" Astrid asks as she places her hand out, and Stormfly slowly presses her snout into her palm, the closest they've gotten in their bonding process.
The way he gazes at us and all the villagers is simply captivating. He appears to be anticipating an attack on Hiccup. "I know he's protective of Hiccup, but he doesn't trust any of us, " the husky rider explains, shuddering.
"Yeah, I know what you mean." The natter rider agrees.
Berk
VO: Yep, dragons. Most people on Berk would say life here is better since we made peace with them. Unfortunately, dragons are still—well, dragons.
Hiccup and Toothless arrive in the central part of the village, and chaos ensues. Gronckles chasing down cows. A group of terrors swarm a woman carrying a plate of chicken as she walks down the Great Hall's steps. Despite the man's protests, deadly Nadders cuddle on his roof and refuse to leave. A monstrous yellow and green nightmare swoops in, snatching a bag of apples from another woman and carrying it off into the forest. A lone deadly nadder pursues a group of chickens beneath a clothesline, oblivious that its tail catches on the line, causing it to snap off its hinges and launch all the clothes into the air.
"Bad dragon! Let go of my food! Drop it, pesky dragon! Dragons!" Sigrid shouted angrily, swatting at the terrors while desperately trying to get her food back.
"Get off my roof, you pest!" Jamerson Thortston yelled furiously at the couple who were lingering on his roof.
"I'll go deal with them. Hiccup, stay here until I get back." Toothless commands his mate as he rushes off to catch the thieving dragons. However, just as the night fury takes off, a massive flock of dragons flies directly over the town and releases a shower of poop.
"Everyone, take cover!" Hiccup issues a warning as the villagers scramble to find shelter. "Ew, gross, gross, gross, gross! Oh, poop! Oh, that's disgusting!" He grimaces as he forms a sphere shield around himself to protect himself from the poo shower, then backs up until he is safely under Bucket and Mulch's makeshift umbrellas made from shields and poles. "Hey, Bucket, hey, Mulch." He greets weakly.
"Every Day at three. They're regular at least. A tip of the cap." Bucket comments while tapping his helmet.
"Kill or perish" has become obsolete. Hey, we've prepared a barrel and sack of fish for your father. Bucket, give the boy the cod." Mulch gestures to his husband.
The bucket-wearing Viking glances to his left, noticing that the barrel is empty and the sack has a large hole in the bottom. Did I eat it already? Did I enjoy it? He wonders, looking around aimlessly.
Hiccup suddenly hears squabbling and glances underneath the house closest to them. He stutters as he points under the house. Both men peer beneath the house and witness approximately eight terrible terrors engaged in a battle for the submissive mate hears a sudden coo, feels a pull, turns around, and sees his dominant mate. "Miss me?" He smiles as he walks up and kisses his beloved.
"Always my love. What were you looking at?" Toothless asks as Hiccup hops onto his back, and the pair begin making their way through the village toward the forest and the cove.
Just a flock of terrible terrors who stole some fish that Bucket and Mulch got for Stoick." The green-eyed human jokes. Despite Stoick's efforts to be a better father to Hiccup, he favors Vikings over dragons and refuses to acknowledge his son's relationship with Toothless. As a result, their peaceful cove remains their home. However, time is running out, and soon, the weather will no longer allow them to stay there. As the mates enter the forest, two shouts from behind stop them.
"HICCUP!" Sif and Melody shout as they sprint towards their cousin and his mate.
Toothless growls but calms down when his mate's hand touches his head, saying, "Easy, love; it's just my little cousins. They're harmless; you know them." Hiccup reminds him.
"My love, no one on this island is entirely harmless to you. Even little hatchlings." The onyx-colored dragon made a remark, and Hiccup couldn't help but nod in agreement, knowing it was true.
"Cousin Hiccup, can't you come to our house tonight and eat dinner? Mom thinks that you should spend time with family." Melody asks with puppy dog eyes and a pleading look on her seven-year-old face.
"I would, but Aunt Ama still hasn't accepted Toothless into her home." "He's not a pet; he's my mate." Hiccup reminds them.
"But we miss you." Sif tries. He employs the same method as his sister.
"And I miss you, but until Toothless is accepted as my mate and treated as such, things can't be worked out." Hiccup counters.
"You take care of and love Hiccup very much, don't you?" asked one of the twins as they looked down. They inquire as Toothless nods and purrs, gently nudging Hiccup off his back. He then reaches down to hold him, gently wrapping his forearms around Hiccup's chest like a hug. He then leans down and nuzzles his mating mark, eliciting a moan and a slight blush from his mate. "He really does love you just like daddy loved mommy." Melody exclaimed with a child's fondness.
"And I love him just as much." Hiccup comments as he leans up and kisses his mate, his green eyes blazing with love and loyalty to the Night Fury that the seven-year-old twins can't help but aww at the sight.
"Okay, well, bye, cousin Hiccup and Toothless," Sif says as he and his sister leave. The two mates look at the twins in confusion. What? You're our cousin, and Toothless is your mate, so he's our cousin too, " Sif explains with an eye roll as he and his sister run home.
"Well, I guess someone in your family has accepted me." Toothless chuckled as he lifted Hiccup onto his back.
"Those two are particularly laid-back; they even inform Snotlout when he is behaving in an arrogant manner by yelling for his mother, and he becomes as pale as a ghost." The petite male explains.
The dragon laughs, and the mates proceed to head home.
Later that night, Mildew wakes up to a thud on his roof and finds a gronkle snoring on top of it. "Dragons, damn beasts." He grumbles as he tries to go back to sleep, but the gronkle moves around and causes dust to fall on the older man and his lamb, Fungus, throughout the night.
The Next Day
The following morning, Hiccup and Toothless stroll into town, observing that while the dragons aren't littering the streets, the Vikings are, as they're assisting Stoick and Gobber in stocking the food storehouse, with the chief barking orders to the assisting Vikings.
"Stand the elk up in the back." The fishing boats have just arrived with a substantial haul. We'll place the fish in barrels and line them up on the sides." Stoick commands his men.
"Stoick!" Mildew shouted angrily as he limped up to the chief.
"Ah, here's Mildew with the complaint of the day." Gobber grumbles with an eye roll.
Just as Mildew approaches the storehouse, Stoick extends his hand. "You picked a terrible time, Mildew. I'm in the middle of storing food. The freeze is coming."
"It's the dragons again. Those demons are not fit to live among civilized men." Mildew complained, jabbing his staff at a passing terrible terror as the mates made their way to the scene.
"He's got a lot of room to talk about being fit to live among men." Toothless giggles along with Hiccup.
"Neither are you, Mildew. Why do you think we built your house so far outside of town?" Gobber points out.
"And I always thought they built his house out there because they were secretly hoping the gods would take him." Hiccup whispers as his mate chuckles.
"Ah, very well, make your jokes. Meanwhile, these dragons turn our village carts upside down! Turn people's houses into piles of rubble! These are wild and unpredictable beasts! You need to put those dragons in cages! If you fail to do so, the dragons will devour us, our homes, and the entire village!" Mildew yells angrily as the villagers begin agreeing with the older man.
Hiccup steps forward with Toothless close beside him. "They don't mean any harm. They're just dragons being dragons. During their mating season, male dragons primarily focus on providing for their female partners." He tries to explain defensively.
"Oh, that's a pitiful justification; these wild animals are accustomed to destruction." The older man remarked bitterly.
"Stoick Please, I understand that these dragons are not intended for destruction, but I am capable of resolving this issue. Please, Toothless is the Alpha, and I am the Queen. Together, we can find a solution." Hiccup pleads.
Wincing that his son is still calling him by his name, Stoick looks between his son and his village and sighs in an ambivalent manner, his brows drawing together into a line on his forehead. "Very well, I leave it to you, son, but if it becomes a bigger problem, I'll deal with it."
"Oh, that's great, letting a runt handle the problem." When Toothless suddenly appears in front of Mildew, snarling at the insult to his mate, he yelps in shock. The older man falls on his buttocks and scrambles away from the scene, with the Night Fury following him until Mildew is no longer visible.
"I really do hope you have a plan, son." With a soft voice, the elder Haddock looks down at his offspring.
"We'll figure it out." Hiccup gestures toward himself and his dominant partner.
Later that night, the mates are in their den; Hiccup lies on Toothless's forepaws, gazing at the ceiling. The Night Fury feels the bond filled with anxiety and a haunting expression on his human face, wondering what his mate is contemplating. "A penny for your thoughts, my love?" He asks gently as he leans down and licks his mate's hair.
"How are we going to get all the dragons to cooperate? Instincts drive them, and even without mating season, what about the rest of the year? What will we do then? I have a strong feeling that Stoick is going to send you away, Toothless. Hiccup whimpered as he clung to his mate's head, his eyes beginning to swim with tears.
"He'll never separate us, my love, I promise. We'll figure something out." Toothless coos, comforting his mate as he, too, wonders how to deal with the current situation.
The Next Day
The mates walk through the village, and all is calm now. "Okay, so far, so good; no sign of any problems." Just as Hiccup finished his sentence, a nadder attempted to steal bread from a female Viking's basket, causing a yell to break out. The Night Fury's mate approaches the nadder directly and yells, "NO!" He yells authoritatively and looks directly into the nadder's green eyes as the nadder quickly settles and bows to its Queen. "Okay, see Toothless. I think things are starting to look up." He's Hiccup was interrupted again by a loud crash. Startled, the nadder shot spines into the surrounding houses, barely missing Hiccup by an inch. He created a shield around himself, the woman beside him, and his dominance. Looking up, he noticed a gronkle chasing a large flock of chickens and knocking over carts in its path. Turning his gaze to another hill, he spotted another nadder and a nightmare setting fire to a sheep farm, causing the sheep to run wild. He looks at his dominant in panic: Toothless, stop that fight! I'll round up the sheep!"
Toothless nods, steps forward, and begins to break up the fights. He instructs the squabbling dragons to search for large quantities of fish for the village and pregnant dragons. The dragons carry out their Alpha's tasks as he watches.
"Okay, okay... whoa!" The Auburn teen runs back to the town square, and his eyes widen as he finds even more chaos than the previous Day. Dragons collide with him in their instinctive pursuits, and Hiccup tries to maintain a shield but fails to calm them. He finds himself amid a dragon frenzy, with many villagers shouting at the dragons in anger and frustration and at Hiccup for not controlling them.
Meanwhile, the other teens watch the chaos on an abandoned catapult. They all see their dragons in the mix but can't tell if they're helping Hiccup or joining the other dragons. Everyone wonders what Hiccup is doing and debates about helping.
Suddenly, a loud, thunderous roar echoed from the top of the Great Hall steps, causing all the dragons to halt their movements and focus on the steps. Hiccup's eyes, too, became fixed and dilated, concentrating on the steps and bowing as Toothless stood tall, his back fins glowing blue and his eyes narrowed and slit into thin lines. "ALL OF YOU GET BACK TO YOUR DENS. NOW!" In his Alpha voice, he commands all the dragons to return to their dens, while Hiccup, also hearing the command from his Alpha, starts to run towards the cove. The black dragon leaps into the air and lands before the retreating human. "Not you, my submissive; you stay put." In his dominant voice, Hiccup stops and kneels before the dragon.
"Have I done something to offend you, my Alpha and dominant?" the dragon's submissive mate, still kneeling with his eyes closed, asked, but the night fury nuzzled under the human's chin.
"Of course not, my love, but you don't have to return to our den." I had instructed all our subjects to leave. You must be exhausted from the chaotic ordeal; let's get you something to eat before heading home." As Hiccup nods and climbs onto the dragon's back, Toothless gently burbles. However, before he can do so, the dragon draws the human near and bites down on the mark, "AWAKEN!" He commands loudly, and Hiccup's eyes become normal again as he sways a bit on his feet from exhaustion, but Toothless catches him.
"Everything hurts, including my artificial leg, and it feels like I've just finished a marathon." Hiccup grumbles, his voice revealing his genuine exhaustion.
"Climb up, and I'll take you to the Great Hall and care for you." Toothless offers as his mate nods and climbs onto the dragon's back, and the two head to the Great Hall.
When Hiccup finishes his dinner, he removes his metal leg and observes that the stump is red and irritated. However, before he can voice his complaints, Toothless takes the stump into his maw and uses his saliva to heal it. "How did I get so lucky to have such a caring mate?" The human submissive sighs in relief when he notices the other teens approaching his table.
"So, it looked like you were having quite a bit of trouble there today?" Astrid accuses her with folded arms.
"Wait, you all witnessed the entire event and did not intervene to provide assistance?" Hiccup responds with a hint of anger in his voice, while Toothless scowls at the self-centeredness of Berk's humans, except for his mate.
"Well, it was spectacular with all that chaos and destruction," Tuffnut shrugs excitedly.
"But Hiccup is correct; we ought to have intervened to assist. Our dragons were amidst the chaos, and our bond with them compels us to assist them." Fishelgs explains.
"You think?" Hiccup groans as Toothless reaches the spot where the most pain is radiating from.
"Sorry, Hiccup." The midnight dragon apologizes, but his mate smiles.
"I know you didn't mean to." Hiccup responded, but his smile expanded as he said, "Wait, I just got an idea for how to deal with the dragon issues." He said out loud.
"How?" Fishlegs asked.
"Train them. Consider this: just as everyone requires structure in their lives, so do dragons. If we train the dragons and integrate them into our daily activities, they will understand that we trust them, and they can trust us as well." Hiccup explains.
"And how exactly do we do that?" inquires Snoulot.
"Enter the arena tomorrow with your dragons and their mates." Hiccup sighs with annoyance, placing his leg back on as the other teen exits the Great Hall.
"I hope this works." He hears Fishlegs mumble.
"I plan on having a serious meeting with the flock tomorrow, and then I'll come to the arena, my love." As his mate climbs on his back and they leave the Great Hall, Toothless explains his plans.
The next afternoon, we see Hiccup waiting for the rest of the teens, leaning against the arena wall. Toothless had dropped him off and headed to the clearing to talk to the flock about their recent behaviors, including nearly hurting his submissive mate. Hiccup observes the other riders entering the arena, but they appear to be in a state of panic. "Where are your dragons? I recall informing Toothless about their exclusion from the meeting."
"We thought they were here with you; aren't they your guard or something?" Tuffnut asked.
Suddenly, a large explosion comes from one of the larger food storage houses, and Hiccup pales as he realizes what happened. "Oh no, " he whispers as he sees a handful of dragons flying to the scene and hears an angry Night Fury roar in the distant forest. "TOOTHLESS!" He yells both with his voice and through the bond as anger floods it.
The teens rush to the scene, where they find the storage destroyed and the dragons devouring all the food. Hiccup notices that most dragons are females, but a few are males. Even the arena dragons are stuffing their maws.
"Stormfly, Eragon?" Astrid asks, a bit shocked as the two Nadders scarf down a barrel of fish.
"Hookfang?" Snoulot gasps as he watches the nightmare destroy a barrel of apples.
Stoick emerges from the wreckage, frustrated and shocked. "Most of our food is gone."
Hiccup slowly approaches his dad. "I can explain, please." He tries, but Stoick quickly dismisses him.
"I want those dragons caged. Now!" He orders. Stoick yells just as Toothless comes up with spines glowing blue and roars at the dragons, who quickly bow to their Alpha, as does Hiccup.
"CLEARING. NOW!" He orders in a tone that leaves no room for argument, coming up and nudging his mate onto his back as the dragons swiftly fly to the clearing.
"Bah, caging is too beneficial for those beasts; I say we banish them!" Mildew yells as the Vikings begin to chant for banishment.
Stoick sighs, not wanting to hurt his son but having to make the difficult decision. "Okay, we'll banish the dragons tomorrow." He agrees in a stern tone.
"What! No, you can't!" Hiccup hollered in pure despair. His face pales in anguish.
"I'm sorry, son, but it's what's best for the village. How can I expect you, as the 'queen,' to control all the dragons when you can't even control your own? I'll see you at home." Stoick replies softly as he looks back at his son, trying desperately to keep the tears from betraying his offspring again.
Astrid and the boys sit at a table later in the early evening, their expressions filled with sadness and heartbreak. "I can't believe we have to send our dragons away. I've never cared about anything other than my family; I can't imagine not seeing Meatlug and Rocky every Day." Fishlegs cries as he wipes away a few tears.
"Stormfly and I may not get along well, but I wouldn't want to banish her or her mate." Whispering, Astrid imagines the tracker class symbol in her soup, a sadness visible on her pale skin.
"Hey, where's Hiccup?" Snotlout asks, noticing his cousin and Night Fury are absent.
"We observed him entering the arena alongside Toothless and our dragons, having just emerged from the clearing." Ruffnut pipes up quietly. "He probably finds it difficult to lose Toothless a third time."
"Yes, I find it hard to imagine doing that, even to you." Tuffnut speaks in a tone devoid of emotion, which is unusual for Thornston.
Hiccup is sitting inside his mate's forepaws in the arena, crying. All the guard dragons in the arena look on with sadness as Toothless coos, comforting his love. "He hasn't changed; no one can change." Hiccup cried in a choked-out sob, feeling utterly distressed as he contemplated losing his mate, his tears falling onto his freckled face like a spring shower onto the ground.
As the empathic dominant, Toothless unleashes a small plasma blast at the ground, igniting a fire, while the other dragons reveal the fruit they discovered in the forest. They present it to their Queen. "It's instinct to take care of our flock. The black dragon explains, "It's like my instinct to care for and protect you from everything, including yourself sometimes."
Hiccup's watery eyes widened as recognition dawned on him. "Wait, instincts—that's it." He rose and made his way towards the arena door. "Toothless, I need you to gather all the flock in the clearing, " he told his mate as Hiccup left the arena, followed closely by the night fury.
"Of course, my love, but may I ask what your plan is?" The night fury questioned.
"You'll find out." Hiccup makes a promise, his lips curling into a small smile, as he makes his way to the steps of the Great Hall. He sprints up to them while Toothless opens the door for him. "Guys, I need your help! "I can't believe I just said that." He spoke through the bond, eliciting a light chuckle from the Night Fury.
"Did Stoick not mention the necessity of cages for the dragons?" Tuffnut inquired as Barf and Belch approached their riders.
"Yes, but I have a plan. Follow me!" Hiccup hollered as he hopped onto Toothless's back, and the dragon darted out of the Great Hall. "Call the flock love." He tells his mate.
Toothless roars loudly, "FLOCK, GATHER IN THE CLEARING!"
The other teens hear Toothless's roar, prompting the arena dragons to take their riders in their mouths and transport them to the clearing where the entire flock, including the terrible terrors, is rapidly gathering.
"Alpha, Queen." The flock addresses as they bow.
"Um, thank you for coming first. I need to ask all of you, "Do you enjoy the humans here on Berk?" Hiccup asked nervously.
Most of the dragons looked at each other, confused by the question, and nodded. "I think they're funny, and they're kind of like hatchlings to some of us. Especially the little ones." A gronkle admits as the other dragons nod.
"And you don't mean to cause destruction or harm to the humans; if anything, you want to protect them like you would a hatchling or a mate?" Hiccup continues as the flock nods. "Then please, I don't want any of you banished, and I know once the humans understand that you do care about them, things will change, but I believe that actions speak louder than words, so that's why we're going to show them how much you care." He looks back at his guards, "Stormfly, Eragon, Meatlug, Rocky, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch, please line up standing side by side."
The guard dragons comply with their Queen's commands, and Hiccup then arranges for all dragon species to form a line behind them. "Now, I understand that you are used to following orders from me, but I urge you to consider these individuals for this task." The Alpha's mate pleads, gestures to his cousin and the other riders, and explains his plan.
The following Day, we see Bucket and Mulch out at sea with a fishing net in the water, but they haven't caught any fish. Suddenly, Hiccup and Snotlout appear before them on top of Hookfang. "Need some help?" Hiccup asks the fishers.
"I appreciate your desire to assist Hiccup; however, two dragons are insufficient to catch a significant number of fish." Mulch tries to show support for the boy's efforts.
"I understand, but there are still a few others." Suddenly, a herd of monstrous nightmares with fishing nets in their claws appeared behind Hookfang, shocking Bucket and Mulch. "Snotlout, scare us up some dinner!" Hiccup yells at his cousin.
"Let's do this, Hookfang!" Snotlout yells as he looks behind him, "Follow us!" He hollers, and Hookfang dives into the water as the herd follows the lead. Soon, the fishing net on the ship overflows with fish, and the nightmares with nets also collect netting full of fish.
"That was a brilliant idea. Hiccup!" Toothless praises loudly in a celebratory fashion; his toxic green eyes look back at his blushing mate with great pride as the pair fly for the next part of the plan.
Stormfly, Astrid, and Eargon wait at the forest's entrance until they hear the night fury's scream. A flock of deadly nadders then joins them as they take flight. "There they are." Astrid gestures towards a group of Vikings who are busy harvesting wood. "Alright, Spine Shots, everyone!" Astrid gives the order to Stormfly, her beloved, and the rest of the nadders, who swiftly chop down trees, shocking the Balkans.
"That should be more than enough wood for at least three winters." Hiccup remarks as he advances to the next stage of his plan.
In the forest, the Twins use Barf and Belch's explosions and the other Zipplebacks in various locations to scare a herd of wild boars. When they leave the forest, Hiccup herds them to the village slaughterhouse. "Yeah, I can already smell the pork cooking." Ruffnut cheers.
"Alright, one more task." Before Hiccup can leave, he hears a familiar shout that makes the young heir shudder.
"HICCUP!" Stoick roared in a loud, booming voice that all of Berk could hear.
'Oh no." Hiccup whimpered upon landing, and Toothless stood protectively before him as Stoick and Mildew approached.
"There they are, Stoick! Those dragons don't look like they're in cages to me." Mildew grumbles.
"No. This is not what I asked for." Stoick looks at his son with disappointment. "Take them to the arena and put them in cages now, Hiccup."
Hiccup shakes his head, wipes away a few tears, glares at his father, and then moves towards the arena with his mate. He spares one last sad glance at Stoick before sighing sadly and walking again. "Call them love." Hiccup asks his mate as Toothless commands the guard to enter the arena. Once there, all the dragons and Hiccups are locked in cells. Hiccup decides that if Toothless is caged, he is, too, as he sees his dad and Gobber entering the arena.
"You all disobeyed my orders... and there will be consequences." Stoick looks at each rider with disappointment and disbelief, but when he sees Hiccup in the cage with Toothless, he raises a brow, "Son, what are you doing?"
"If my dominant is going to be locked up, then so will I." Hiccup states.
'Odin, help me.' Stoick disapproves of his son's antics with the Night Fury as he looks back at the riders with a raised eyebrow. "You assumed control of this place without my consent." You released the dragons against my wishes. And I heard from multiple Vikings that you used dragons around the village for various tasks. For that, I've decided that."
"You're getting a Dragon Training Academy!" Gobber interrupts the chief.
"What?" The Mildew sputters out from the gathered crowd.
"Gobber! I wanted to tell them!" Stoick shouted.
"I'm sorry. You're right. Go ahead."
"Well, you told most of it!" Stoick fired back.
"You can express your pride in them, particularly in Hiccup!"
"GOBBER! Hiccup—well, what he said. You've made me so proud. This Dragon Training Academy is for you." As he presses the lever, Stoick explains, triggering the release of the dragons and their mates. The arena dragons reunite with their riders; Stormfly stands beside Astrid but doesn't flinch when the shield maiden pets her with a small smile. "I know this isn't much, but I hope this is to show you that I'm trying, son." As the two mates nuzzle each other, Stoick speaks to Hiccup.
"Thank you, and it does show you're trying. Dad." Hiccup acknowledges with a half-smile and finally calls Stoick Dad, as the chief beams with happiness.
"You are truly amazing, my Hiccup." Toothless softly coos, nuzzling his mate's chest.
"It's because I have such a loving mate like you, Toothless," Hiccup says, lifting his mate's head and gazing into the toxic green eyes he adores. He leans down and kisses scaly lips, not noticing Stoick's smile slip from his face at the sight of his son kissing a dragon, as he couldn't think of anything but death when it came to the Night Fury.
Hiccup VO: Dragons can't change who they are. But who would want them to? Dragons are powerful, amazing creatures. And as long as it takes me, I won't give up on bringing humans and dragons together.
