Sam couldn't help but smile at the way Danny chattered on about a paper wrote, in one of his class. Sam wasn't quite sure what it was about, but it was still adorable the way Danny could really talk for hours once he starts on something he's passionate about. The way his blue eyes lit up at the mention of it, and the way he seemed to glow as he went on, even if he lost the audience.
"Oh, that reminds me!" Danny cut himself off. "Are you still coming to the bonfire tonight?" The bonfire, it was something Riley planned up with a bunch of other students. It was going to be your basic party, just with a giant fire and a maybe a fireworks show if Sam remembered correctly.
"Yea, are we still going together?" Sam asked, smiling at the nod he received. This is the second bonfire Riley planned, the first Sam didn't go to, but Danny made an appearance. Not that Sam was worried about going, pretty much all of their friends be there. It was bound to be fun even if he didn't know a lot of people there.
"Awesome, Riley and Tina were both going to dig into me if I didn't manage to convince you to." Danny laughed, taking a drink from his coffee. "I'm glad you want to go, it'll be fun." The smile Danny gave him was contagious, the taller man was more interested in why Danny seemed to like Bonfire parties more than he liked regular parties. Maybe it was the open air?
"I wouldn't want either of them to be disappointed." Sam shook his head, looking down at his own cup. Things were simple now, easy. It was an almost constant routine, but something felt off. He wasn't going to dwell on it now, it was a thought to have at night, when he's alone, not while he's trying to enjoy himself. "Damn, we have to head to class soon." Sam sighed, taking a glance at his watch.
"Uh, you're right. I'm gonna head out now, it's kind of far from here." Danny shrugged, grabbing his things. "See you later." Danny smiled, leaning in and giving Sam a quick peck before heading for the door. Sam smiled softly as he watched the other man go. A moment passed before he made his own to class.
When they first started this, Danny was a lot more hesitant when it came to public displays of affection. Slowly he was growing more comfortable, more confident that he wasn't crossing some kind of invisible line, something that was going to ruin everything. A fear Sam couldn't really understand, but he empathized with. He took things slow, making sure that Danny understand that things went both ways here.
And now, they have their own rhythm. A patterned that worked for both of them, and it helped that nothing odd came up again. Danny seemed like he was doing better, even with school. The stress surrounding the two of them seemed to lessen with every passing day, everyone was getting into the grooves of things, and it was nice.
Sam actually felt happy.
Maybe it was a stupid idea, maybe he was moving too fast, but to him, it made sense. Sure they were dating now, but they've been friends for a long time, so what could go wrong. It was just an idea though, there was no saying if it would actually happen. The thought alone brought butterflies to his stomach. He wanted it to work, he hoped at the end of this year he could move out of the dorms and moved into a shared apartment with Danny.
Of course if Danny thought it was too soon, he would just get an apartment for himself. He's made enough on his own to manage it, but there was a strong hope that Danny would be okay with it.
Okay, Sam definitely feels like he's getting too ahead of himself. He shouldn't be looking at apartment listings, especially since they still have quite some time before they hit the end of the year. Although a semester could fly by, they still had time. There was no need to look into this now, but Sam liked being prepared. Even if his plan doesn't go through, he just knows it'll be okay.
Sam sighed, closing his laptop, the pictures of apartments and studios in the area disappearing from sight. There wasn't much else to do as he waited for the time to leave. It wasn't long now, Danny was bound to show up at his door any moment now. All his homework and classwork was caught up with now and even a little more was completed.
It was just time to relax, which usually felt weird for him to do. He got so used to constantly doing things, whether it was checking supplies, or cleaning them, or simple researching about a hunt, or just trying to find one. There was always something to do, even earlier in his college life. There was always new classwork to start, or something to study, or tutoring to get done.
Now, there wasn't. It was just another thing Sam had to get used to.
The sound of his phone pulled him from his thoughts, his is zeroed in on the contact name. Danny. "I'm outside your door :)". Sam smiled, grabbing his wallet and jacket before pulling it open.
"Hey Sammy!" Riley greeted, arm looped around Danny's shoulders. "Long time no see bud."
"We saw each other yesterday." Sam laughed, giving Danny a quick peck.
"Yea for like five minutessss." She drawled, releasing Danny from her hold. "Let's get going!"
"I'm glad you can make it." Danny smiled, taking Sam's hand in his. The two of them, walked behind Riley who decided to take the lead and give the couple a bit of space.
"It there much I should expect?" Sam asked.
"Not really, you can expect a lot more smoking than house parties." Danny shrugged, bumping his shoulder against Sam's. "Do you mind that? Smoking I mean?" There was a hesitation is Danny words, like he was worried Sam was going to say something he was hoping he wouldn't.
"Not really, it's not for me though." Sam replied, watching Danny relax a bit. "Do you?"
"Uh yea, I tried Riley's cart once." Danny smiled, looking a little more relaxed. "It's nice, helps me relax."
"That's good." Sam replied, falling into a comfortable silence. Sam really didn't mind the concept of smoking, whether it was weed or nicotine. Regardless, people should be able to do what they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone. Personally, this wasn't something he would want to put into his own system, but he won't fault people for enjoying. It is just like how he enjoyed drinking sometimes.
"Glad you guys could make it!" Brady laughed, raising a red solo cup towards his friends. "Drink! Mingle! Enjoy yourselves!" He laughed, and Sam could already tell his friend was pretty intoxicated. He's eyes scanned the surrounding students, everyone talking to someone, he even spotted Tina off in the distance with her significant others.
"Whoa Brady, take it easy on the beer dude." Riley laughed, picking up her own cup.
"Beer? Haha nope, this is good old jungle juice." Brady tilted the cup, letting Sam catch a glimpse of a red liquid. "Treat yourselves to some, they got three gallons worth!"
"We will, we will." Danny laughed, patting Brady on the shoulder before tugging Sam towards the table of drinks.
"Remember kids, use protection!" Sam felt his face heat up a bit at his roommate's parting words. That wasn't particularly on tonight's plans. He was just here to unwind, and have fun.
"Beer, or juice?" Danny asked over the music thrumming through the night air. Sam paused, glancing over the table.
"Beer." He offered Danny a smile, grabbing one of the unopened bottle while Danny poured himself a cup of the juice. "How is it?" He asked once Danny took a sip.
"Sweet, really really sweet." He laughed, shaking his head.
"I'm not too surprised, sounds about right for Riley."
"Right? I swear, it's a wonder she doesn't have a mouthful of cavities." Danny laughed, taking a seat on one of the many logs surrounding the giant fire.
"Yo Danny!" A voice broke through, drawing the two of their attentions. A blonde man rushed up to the two of them, a spoon pipe in one and hand and lighter in the over.
"Hey Trent, what's up?" Danny greeted, turning towards the student. Trent held out his hands, nodding towards the packed pipe.
"Not much, hanging with the guys. Just stopped by to ask if you wanted a hit?"
"Do you mind?" Danny asked, motioning towards Trent.
"Not at all." Sam smiled, shifting back a bit. He quietly watched as Danny took a drag, watching the smoke release into the air, mingling with the small cloud of smoke building in the area. The smell found its way to Sam's nose, not too unappealing but a little odd. Nothing he was fond of, but nothing he'd hate.
"You want a hit?" Trent ask, turning to Sam, who shook his head. He'd rather stick to liquids for his vices.
"Sorry I don't smoke." Sam tilted the beer in his direction as a silent reference to his preferences. Trent seemed to pick up the notion pretty quickly, nodding in understanding.
"Aye man, no problem. Everyone's got different vices." The man grinned, nodding back to his group after taking the tools back from Danny. "I'll be over there if ya want another hit dude, y'all enjoy yourselves.
"You too." Sam and Danny responded, watching as the other man left.
Sam watch Danny take a deep breath, any tension slowly leaving his body. The shorter man opened his eyes, offering a soft smile. Sam couldn't help but smile, Danny looked comfortable. Like he was in his own element. It was nice, seeing Danny seems carefree in a different environment. The idea of coming to another one of these seemed a lot more appealing now.
"This seems... relaxed." Sam smiled, watching the other students mingle and chat, no one actively too drunk or too rowdy. Peaceful.
"Why do you think I like it so much?" Danny smiled, taking a drink from his cup. "It's not like the frat parties, it's easier to just have fun here." Danny mused.
"I can see why." Sam smiled, turning to face Danny. The other man watch him for a second before smiling, resting his head against Sam's shoulder. Sam breathed in, turning his gaze onto the flickering fire before him. A song he's heard plenty of times flitted through the area, over the chatter of students and the crackling of the fire. The cool air contrasted with the warmth from the center, it was nice. Serene.
AN: Happy New years! Let's all hope 2021 is kind to all of us.
I finally caught up and finished Supernatural, and man my heart is just gone.
But I hope you guys like this pretty drama less chapter, partly filler, partly to show a bit more into each of them I guess. And ya know, regular college things.
Feel free to leave a review letting me know what you guys thought.
Stay safe, and check on your friends and family!
