Owl House Season 2 Episode 3 – Echoes of the Past
Hi all! Sorry for the long wait! Been busy! I hope you guys liked my first artwork scene. Drawn by Alejindio.
The Echoes of the Past cause King to realize he isn't the tyrannical overlord he thinks he is.
Owl House Season 2A Intro
The eye of the old portal door opens, engulfed in flames.
Luke drops down with Rebellion and a Glyph Gun, giving his gun a spin and swung his sword as it opens, releasing electricity while he grins.
Eda slides in from her right, spinning her Owl Staff and swinging to release energy. King pops up from her.
Willow emerges and lifts her arms as her eyes glow, summoning huge vines behind.
Gus comes in with a book, summoning two illusions of himself striking poses besides him.
Amity twirls in from her right and with a grin her hands glow with purple energy, summoning Abomination goo.
Lilith slides in from the left, spinning her Raven Staff and swinging to release energy like Eda did. Hooty pops out from her clock backpack.
The Golden Guard flash steps from the left with his Artificial staff which glows with energy. It disappears for him to draw and swing Yamato, striking a pose and releasing a blade of energy.
A Boiling Isle mural appears, three windows flipping to briefly reveal Qrow, Darius and Eberwolf. The windows flip to reveal Qrow in his Devil Form, Darius in his Abomination form and Eberwolf in his Beast form.
Belos appears striking a powerful pose, his castle behind him as lightning strikes
Luke rode on Eda's staff like a surfboard, zooming past Bonesborough, flying past Tinella Nosa, sharing a high-five with Gus, Willow being beside him with a plant releasing vines and evading guards that chase him down. Eda and King join in on the fun and they have blast taking to the skies…until they hang on for dear life as a massive monstrous worm-like monster, mouth wide open, lunges at them as they scream in horror.
Then the scene changes back to the Owl House, where it's night-time, and stars twinkle in the sky as the trio are on the roof and looking up into the sky, Eda holding her staff beside her, Luke holding Rebellion downward and King riding his shoulder. Luke opens a hand, sending a ball of light floating into the sky where it bursts to release a blinding flash.
The title card appears:
Owl House: Son of Sparda
Sitting in the Owl House, Luke was surrounded by a mountain of books with a notebook in his hand, his hoodie and goggles hung up. Ever since Lilith's revelation of glyph combinations, Luke was eager to experiment and study ways to make new spells.
Luke: Hmmm...
Luke starts drawing a glyph but scribbles it out.
Luke: Nerp.
King dives through, tumbling books over.
King: Luke, I need your help! I think Francois is trying to start a rebellion.
Pausing for a moment, Luke looked towards King as he pointed towards the corner of the room, where a large pile of his stuffed animals/"mighty army" was with his "general," Francois was sitting on a pillow. It looked completely normal...until a jagged knife suddenly fell from behind it.
Luke: In a minute, little buddy. I'm close to figuring out this glyph combo.
King: It's always glyphs and portals with you these days. What about King?
Luke: There's time for that, just not right now. He points over to Lilith with his pencil. Why don't you ask Lilith for help? She was in the Emperor's Coven. She has more experience with unruly mobs than anyone.
Lilith is kneeling at the desk, extremely focused on drawing a glyph with a red paintbrush. She's bent over, eyes only a short distance from the paper and creepily widened like a crazy person. Her hair is messy, and the whites of her eyes are huge, with tiny irises. She giggles giddily.
Lilith: Watching the ink dry is the best part.
King grunts in disapproval, disturbed by this scene. Hooty comes in offering Lilith a mug.
Hooty: A fresh cup of tea for my favourite cup of tea. That's you, Lulu.
Lilith smooths her hair, and her eyes turn back to normal as she smiles gratefully at Hooty.
Lilith: Hootsifer, you truly are a gem. She pets his head. How do you always know what to do?
King whispers to Luke who's still writing.
King: What's going on? Is Hooty blackmailing her?
Luke: Huh, I think they're actually friends. Pretty weird since they're opposites. But, hey, who am I to judge. He closes his book and stands up, holding his new glyph combo. Alright, time to test out my new combo. Now you see me…
He slams the Glyph onto his chest and disappears into thin air. King gasps and Lilith looks up in surprise, both wondering where Luke went. The human boy suddenly reappears.
Luke: Now you don't. Luke double takes, realizing he's no longer invisible. Oh, I guess it only lasts as long as I hold my breath. He guns Lilith. Still pretty cool, huh?
King rushes and clings to Luke's leg.
King: Don't ever do that again!
Lilith stood up amazed to see Luke has perfected an Invisibility Glyph combo.
Lilith: Do that again! An Invisibility Spell!? How ever did you accomplish it?
Luke: As he spoke, Luke was shaking King off his leg. Well, since you guys discovered that we can make new spells by combining glyphs, I've been experimenting. I got the invisibility idea from your history books, Lilith.
Lilith stands up and begins walking to the side.
Lilith: Fascinating! As the lead historical scholar of the Emperor's Coven, my aid could be very helpful in—
Lilith stumbles over the tower of King's plushies, toppling them.
King: An ambush! Men, defend your ruler!
King tosses a nearby plush at Lilith. Hooty blocks it, and dramatically falls into Lilith's arms.
Hooty: I'm done for, Lulu.
Lilith: Hootsifer, this is make-believe.
Hooty: Ah, to die in your arms. Avenge me.
Hooty droops and sticks his tongue out, his eyes becoming Xs (i.e. he plays dead) much to Lilith's bemusement. King tosses another plushie at Lilith's head much to her annoyance as King stood in front of her with his doll.
King: The King of Demons yields to no one!
Lilith: Historically, demons have never been united under a single rule until Belos. There's no such thing as a "King of Demons".
King throws yet another plush at Lilith's head, annoying her more.
King: Blasphemy! Clearly, you know nothing of my reign of terror. Allow me to tell you.
We go to a series of medieval-style illustrations depicting King as a large, fearsome King of Demons that people were bowing down before.
King: I was once the mighty King of Demons. I was beloved almost as much as I was feared.
In one illustration, a giant green hand takes a large crown from King's head.
King: But one dark day, an evil spell was cast...
King fell to his knees to show how dramatic his origin story was, but no one seemed to buy it.
King: …Transforming me into this!
Hooty stopped playing dead, finding the story ridiculous.
Hooty: Oh? What happened to your "crown of power"?
King: A trifle! That was just to test Eda and Luke's dedication to me! They passed. My real crown is still out there. But when I shrank, my memories got, uh…fuzzy.
Luke drops down rubbing his back, though Lilith is unconvinced and unimpressed.
Lilith: How convenient. A hole in your memory for each hole in your story.
Hooty: Nice one, Lulu! Up top!
Lilith high-fived Hooty's face, neither one deterred from Hooty's lack of arms and hands. The owl house demon did get a black eye though.
King: Hey, I remember plenty!
We go back to the illustrations of a monstrous King, which depict what he describes.
King: I remember armies bowing before me, being served the greatest of feasts... Next is a POV shot of King's paw reaching for a bright light as it shrinks from view. And falling from a massive height as that evil hex shrank me. One day, I'll return to my rightful place AND ALL SHALL FEAR ME!
Luke grabs King and gives him a belly rub, making him laugh as Luke talks to him like a puppy.
Luke: Sure, you are, little furball. You're gonna be such a good tyrant! Who's the scariest demon king? Who is it?
King: Me! It's me!
Lilith: Your dedication to this farce would be charming if it wasn't so sad.
King: Don't blame me for your ignorance. I'm not a liar, and I can prove it.
King storms off into a corridor, angry and determined, leaving Lilith offended.
Lilith: He called me ignorant! Me!
Hooty shakes his head in disapproval and Luke walks over to the pile of plushies, tidying and piling them back to how they were.
Luke: Will you guys knock it off. This story is really important to him, so the least we can do is play along.
Lilith: You mean indulge his silly fantasy?
Hooty: Yeah! I'm a house of principles! You're asking me to lie? Hoot-rageous!
Luke: Just go with it for his sake! We'll find a way to break it to him gently.
At the doorway, King is struggling to get back through with Eda and Lilith's staff. They fall, and he holds them vertically, allowing him to walk through this time.
King: All right, you two shall regret ever doubting me. We're going to my castle!
Luke: Wait, what?
This caught Luke by surprise. King has an actual castle? Or is it another make belief thing? Hooty comes up next to him.
Hooty: What's wrong, Luke? I thought you said we should just "go with"—
Luke: Luke quickly clamps Hooty's beak shut. Go with him! I said we should go with him, right? How could I forget what I just said?
Luke grabs Eda's staff and Lilith takes her's.
Lilith: My historical expertise is being questioned, and I will not allow it. She addresses Hooty. Hooty, would you like to accompany us?
Hooty gasps in excitement, he's finally being asked to join on the adventure.
Hooty: I-I'll get ready!
Hooty stretches backwards toward the door. Luke, King, and Lilith watched and heard sounds of crashing, and squishing organs and splattering as Hooty in some ungodly way ripped out his long birdy body from the door. The three all look disgusted and very disturbed until they gasp in horror.
Luke: Oh my god…!
Part of the door where Hooty would be is now hollow, with pulsing organs at the edges. Below it, Hooty is now sitting in a birdhouse-shaped backpack.
Hooty: Porta-Hooty, reporting for Hooty!
No one could reply as Lilith held her chest with a look of horror, King was crying from being scarred for life, and Luke was dry heaving to the floor but trying his best NOT to vomit.
Meanwhile, Eda gets out of a steamy bathroom wearing a bathrobe and a towel on her head, failing to see out the window with Luke, Lilith, King, and Hooty flying away on their staffs. She walks into the main room to find no one around.
Eda: Hmm? Where'd everyone go? Man, they made a mess in here. Oh well. It's been a while since I had room to put my feet up.
Eda jumps onto the couch and detaches her feet, preparing to relax. Her head is on the armrest and she opens her eyes to see a note on King's plushies.
"Off to my real castle! Don't wait up!
Love, your favourite demon overlord."
Eda twists around, looking horrified as she knows where exactly they're going.
Eda: Oh, no! Not again! Oh!
She gets off the couch and falls off, forgetting her feet are detached.
After getting dressed, Eda got out the door, putting her feet back on and rushes into the shed. She emerges in her bathtub motorboat, flying it off a ledge and into the sea.
In the skies, Luke and King are flying over the sea on Eda's staff, while Lilith rides hers. Luke has donned on his goggles and battle coat which is worn in place of his hoodie and Lilith is holding Porta-Hooty over her back. Hooty comes out of his portable home.
Hooty: Are we still flying? He drops down. It's been hours.
Lilith: Should we call it a day? Or perhaps a night? She can't help but laugh as Hooty rises back up. Hooty, your sense of humour is infectious.
King: There it is!
In view was a mysterious island that looked like it was surrounded by a stone wall with a white pillar in the middle of it and a lush forest around it as fog surrounds it. Possibly to hide it for some reason. He steers Luke down towards it and Lilith follows.
Lilith: This island shouldn't be here. It's not on any of the maps.
King: It's always been there when I looked for it.
They land on the shore and walk into the jungle, preparing to go on foot.
King: After I shrunk, I woke up here, in Eda's arms, and she carried me away. Like a wittle baby.
Luke: So, this is where Eda found you.
Hooty: Hooty gasps. Look!
They all watched the fog clear a bit and reveal the white pillar castle in the middle of the island, but with a closer look, they could see it was cracked with some sort of hole at the top left corner.
King: Ah, home sweet home.
Our heroes are trekking through the jungle, with King leading the way. King climbs over a tree root, with Luke and Lilith behind him.
Lilith: That tower is certainly intriguing, but—Oh!
She trips over the root. Hooty extends himself to a nearby tree trunk to stabilize her.
Lilith: Thank you, Hootsifer.
Hooty: My pleasure.
Lilith: But couldn't we have landed a little closer?
King: He points up, the thickness of the trees are making it impossible to see the skies. The treetops are so thick, this is the only way in. Plus, now I can dramatically do...THIS!
He grabs a bush obscuring the path. He pulls it aside, revealing a huge keyhole-shaped entrance to the tower which is blocked by a pile of rocks and boulders.
Luke: Ooh. A door fit for a tyrant.
King: That's me!
As they approached the entrance, Lilith noticed strange carvings on the gold lining as King climbed onto one of the boulders.
King: I'll find you guys another way in.
King crawls into a crevice in the rock pile while Lilith examines the symbol carved into the gold lining.
Lilith: Huh. What a strange material. And this symbol. I've never seen anything quite like this.
Hooty: Ha! I've seen better graffiti. I've got better graffiti on me.
Hooty raises his side, showing "LUKE!" and three cool S's graffitied on him.
Lilith: Luke, look! Luke walks over to Lilith. This predates any language I know. King's story may be a fake, but these ruins are a history mystery.
She giggles and claps excitedly just as the rocks collapse, clearing the way. King peeks up.
King: Eh? What'd I miss?
Luke: Nothing much. He grins at Lilith. Just Lilith nerding out over these ancient carvings in your castle.
King: HA! So even though I "lied," Lilith is impressed by my castle and wants to study it! Talk about flip-flopped!
King laughs as he gets inside his castle. Lilith give Luke a dirty look to which Luke returns with a grin.
Luke: What? I was just telling the truth. That's what you wanted, right?
Lilith grumbles as they climb over the rocks and into the tower. They use Light Glyphs to make their own lights and examine the room, which is littered with rocks stacked to make the same figure of something with two or three round rocks as a body and a crescent-shaped head placed horizontally. There were also pillars similar to that of cacti with a large star chart over the keyhole door behind them.
King: Ah, the chamber where I would devour the hearts of my foes. The taste was cold and bitter. I wonder what yours would taste like Luke.
Luke: Luke guns at King. My guess, fruit punch.
The trio explored the inside as no other sentient being was around, Luke walked behind King to light his way as a large shadow passed over both of them. Luke spun on his feet to see what it was, only to find more of the small rock figures with crescent-shaped heads.
Luke: What the hell?
He's surprised when King jumps on his shoulder.
King: Can't believe your eyes, huh? My castle does have that effect.
Luke: Yeah…so much wonder.
Lilith walks through a hallway. Hooty gasps and looks at a wall.
Hooty: Are you seein' what I'm seein'?
Lilith walked over to the wall. Carved and painted into a wall was a large, bearded, and muscular demon that looked shockingly like King/
Lilith: These carvings, they're ancient.
Hooty: Wh-what does that mean?
Lilith: Well, if I've never heard about this ruin, let alone this entire island, who knows what other parts of history we scholars have missed?
Lilith and Hooty exchange looks of pure shock and disbelief, both having the same thought.
Hooty: Are you saying...
Lilith: That he may actually have been...
Lilith & Hooty: THE KING OF DEMONS!?
Meanwhile, King is standing at the top of a pile of rocks, showing off to Luke.
King: Ah, my kingdom. I, uh... He wipes a tear from his eye. I got some bone dust in my eye.
Luke: Luke is looking up. Hey, King. You said you remember falling from somewhere in your memories. You think that's where you fell from?
There's a hole in the ceiling with rocks plugging it.
King: I-I can't quite recall. I just remember a muffled roar, probably some minion praising my name.
Luke: Okay, well, this has been fun but maybe we should head back? This is cool and all, but Eda's probably on her third cup of apple blood by now, and last time, it was real hard getting her off the roof.
Hooty bursts in, comically knocking Luke to ground and curves next to King.
Hooty: Your Majesty! It's me, faithful ol' Hooty. You know I was messin' around with you the whole time, right?
Luke: Luke got up, confused. "Your Majesty"?
Lilith pushes Luke aside again onto the ground.
Lilith: It's clear these ruins are of immense historical value. Perhaps you could tell me more about them.
Luke gets up and brushes himself off, annoyed by the rudeness and surprised to hear Lilith and Hooty actually treating King like an actual king.
King: I suppose I could, uh…regale you with some tales.
Luke hears a strange hissing sound from a dark corridor.
King: Am I using that word right? Regale?
Luke shines his light orb down the corridor, seeing claw marks on the floor and walls along the corridor. He hears the hissing again.
Luke: Uh…guys, I don't think we're alone here.
He turns to see no one listen. Lilith and Hooty are too busy sucking up to King.
King: I'll show you where my throne used to be. It was made from the teeth of my enemies and boy, was it awkward to sit in.
King leads Lilith and Hooty down another direction. Luke goes down the hallway by himself, intent on finding the source of the hissing noise.
Luke finds himself exploring a new room. The room was covered with large cobwebs and held bigger versions of the statues from the other room, yet they were in a different and almost humanoid shape. Each one appeared to be standing in a special slot and covered in some sort of gunk while they fell apart.
Luke: Whoa. Mega creepy. What the heck are these things?
He stops by one figure with its "hand" sticking out. With a suspicious look he slightly pokes it with Eda's staff only for it to fall apart on him. On the ground, Luke looks up and sees countless other figures in recesses spiralling towards the ceiling, seemingly endless.
Luke: Okay…all of a sudden this adventure has turned into a horror movie.
He shines his light and sees that one of the slots is EMPTY. He gasps in horror. Suddenly, he hears the hissing noise again and turns to see a shadow behind him running towards the previous room.
Luke: Oh no. Oh, crap!
Luke chases after it.
King was continuing showing Lilith and Hooty the paintings on the wall.
King: And that's how I would annihilate my enemies. Who needs due process, am I right?
Lilith takes interest in a painting of a large, humanoid version of King aiming a spear at a monster. The head of the beast cannot be seen due to that part of the carving missing.
Lilith: What does this image represent, my lord?
King: Uh…it's hard to remember. But that handsome devil looks familiar, huh?
Luke runs over to them in a state of panic.
Luke: Tour's over people! We gotta get the hell out of here!
Lilith: But there's so much to learn!
Luke: Sorry history-mystery lady, this environment is not conducive to learning. Based on the room I saw, it's conducive to death!
King: King jumps down. Ah, you saw the horrifying monstrosity room. Don't worry, they can't hurt you.
The hissing is heard again. The group looked up, finding the statue, now a living golem, crawling on the ceiling. It hissed once more as it turned its crescent moon shaped head right side up to gaze straight at them.
Luke: That one can. RUN!
Luke grabs King and runs for the entrance, but the monster jumps in front of him, blocking his way. It changes its right arm into a claw and swipes at him. Luke dodges a couple times before blocking the golem with Eda's staff, holding it back. Lilith attacks it with ice magic, pinning it to a pile of rocks.
Luke: Dang, lady, you've been practicing!
Lilith: You may admire my progress when we get out of here alive!
Luke and Lilith make a run for the exit. But the monster slides through the ice spikes and gives chase, running along the walls and ceiling before again pouncing in front of Luke and Lilith. It stands tall, turns its head and changes its left arm into an axe. It prepares to strike, but an explosion at the back of its head puts it on the ground. Eda jumps in from the rocks, wearing her bandolier armed with explosive potions.
Eda: Get out of here! I'll hold it back and meet you outside.
She tosses a potion at the monster and takes a couple steps back from it, leading it away from exit.
Luke: Eda! We can fight it together!
Eda: Luke, you're strong, but even you can't beat this thing. Now, go!
Luke and Lilith share a look and make haste for the exit. Eda grabs another potion from her belt and tosses it in her hand as she courageously prepares to face the Golem alone.
Eda: It's been a while. Miss me?
The monster leaps at Eda and attacks.
Luke and Lilith run out but stop and turn toward the entrance, worried for Eda. King rides Luke's shoulder.
Hooty: More running, less stopping!
Lilith: Edalyn said to wait here!
Luke: We can't let her fight it alone! We have to go back!
Everyone hears explosions from within. They all look at the door with frightful anticipation, a terrified King clutching Luke. Just then, Eda walks out, clutching a wound on her shoulder.
Lilith: Edalyn!
Lilith ran up to her younger sister, holding her up.
Lilith: You're hurt. What of that horrible creature?
The Golem climbs up the boulders, brandishing an axe-arm. It swings down on Eda and Lilith but a blue forcefield appears around the entrance. The axe-arm goes limp on the outside, and the monster pulls it back inside much to everyone's relief.
Eda: It can't get past the entrance. We're safe now.
Luke: That thing must be guarding this place against intruders.
King: King jumps down confused. But it's my castle. How could we be intruders?
Luke: Uh...
An awkward silence fell upon the ground as the truth seemed to finally rear its head, but no one had the guts to say it...until now. King looks at Luke, starting to wise up.
King: You don't believe this is my castle. Luke looks away, sweat running down his face. Luke…you think I would lie to you?
Luke: King, it's not that I...
Eda: You aren't lying. You just don't know the truth.
Eda groans and falls to her knees. Lilith starts bandaging her arm. She gives King a sad look, ready to tell him the truth.
Eda: It's time for me to tell you how we really met.
King is afraid of what he's about to hear but listens anyway.
(Flashback)
A flashback begins, taking place on the island eight years ago. Boiling rain is falling; a younger Eda with shorter orange hair flies down on her staff and sets foot on the shore.
Eda (Present): Eight years ago, I was looking for a place to hide from the Emperor's Coven. I never knew this place existed and it just…appeared out of the mist. So, I landed.
Young Eda looks at the holes the burning rain is making on her cloak, then notices the ruined tower in the distance.
Eda (Present): Now, I was one hot tamale, but the boiling rains were even hotter. I needed shelter.
Eda enters through the same entrance and looks around the entrance.
Eda (Present): But when I found it... I wasn't alone.
She notices a small shadowy figure running past her. She readies her staff.
Eda: Who's there? Reveal yourself!
She turns around and gasps as she sees what was trailing her. From behind a small rock formation, a small, furry creature with a skull mask on its head jumps out and wags its tail. It's King as a baby. The baby King tilts his head, and Eda lowers her staff. King then picks up a crescent-shaped rock and puts it on top of an incomplete figure. Eda bends down to little King, slightly taken in by his adorability.
Eda: Did you make all these? What are you?
She starts petting King, who happily wags his tail.
Eda (Present): I assumed you were just some stray dog. But then...
The two look up and see the golem towering over them, brandishing its axe-hand. Eda grabs King and bolts, barely avoiding the axe swing as it knocks over the figures.
Eda (Present): That thing was gonna kill us both, so I picked you up and bounced.
Eda and King are fly out of the ruins. Approaching its magical boundary, the monster fashions its limbs into a bow-and-arrow and fires a wooden speared arrow. The arrow hits King, breaking off his left horn, rendering him unconscious and knocking Eda off her staff. The Owl Lady continues her escape on foot, grabbing King and his broken horn.
As they fly away from the island Eda is looking sympathetically at the baby King.
Eda (Present): Against my better judgment, I took you home with me.
We now go to the Owl House. Eda pokes her head through the doorway to see King stacking piles of household objects, like the rocks in his castle. Now King is wearing his signature collar.
Eda (Present): I'd gotten you the collar, 'cause... well, that's what you do when you get a new pet. But then...
He completes one stack and stands proudly and Eda leans back on the door frame with a grin, snorting and grinning.
Eda: Ah, look at you. A king amongst his subjects.
King: King? King!
King yelps excitedly and fell. Eda is surprised to hear it speak.
Eda: It spoke? She smiles, walking over to King. Yeah, that's right. A king. She kneels down. You know what else kings do? They command armies and eat delicious feasts.
King claps and makes happy noises, unable to stop wagging his tail Young Eda continues gesturing kingly yarns to King as he looks up with big, attentive eyes.
Eda (Present): And that's how you got the idea you were some despotic overlord.
(End of Flashback)
We go back to the present, where Eda has finished telling the story with a sombre and regretful look.
Eda: Oh, but you were finally happy. So, I kept playing along with it.
King is distraught with shock and total denial. If what Eda's saying is true…he was never a King of Demons. He wasn't King of anything. This was what he truly believed his whole life and now he finds out it's all been a lie. He couldn't believe it. He refused to believe it.
King: Y-You're lying!
Eda: I'm not.
Eda takes something out of her hair, revealing it to be the broken piece of King's horn. King is shocked and curious about this, taking it from Eda's hand. He gasps as a surge of memories came rushing into his mind. His true memories.
(Flashback)
His loyal subjects were just those small statues inside, all built by him.
King: My army?
And his feasts, were just bugs and leaves he would scrounge for.
King: My feasts.
(End of Flashback)
King held onto the horn looking absolutely devastated as reality sets in. There was no denying it now. His whole life has been a lie.
King: My life... He panics and throws the broken horn down. Aah! No! Keep that thing away from me! It's messing with my head!
Luke is on his knees extending his hand in sympathy.
Luke: King, pal, it's gonna be okay.
King is despondent and in a state of panic, close to going into hysterics over the truth he's discovered about himself.
King: Y-You're all just making fun of me, like usual, right? The remorseful look on everyone's faces tells him everything and he hyperventilates. No! No, no, no, no! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!
King, now on the verge of tears, holds onto his head and breathes heavily before running away from the group, crying and sobbing hysterically.
Luke gets up and forlornly extends his hand as they all watch King disappear into the jungle.
Luke: KING!
After running off, Luke, Eda, and Lilith are walking through the jungle in search of the runaway King. Eda and Lilith held their respective staffs and Luke was holding Rebellion. All of them have guilt-ridden looks.
Luke: King?! King! Where are you little guy!?
Lilith: I can't fly. The tree cover is too dense. I regret ever playing a part in this.
Hooty starts bawling and crying his eyes out.
Hooty: Is this what regret feels like? I hate it!
Hooty droops over Lilith's shoulder as he cries, and she gently pats him.
Luke: Oh man, I feel like such a jerk. He trusted me and I lied to him. Now, he's all alone.
Luke sits down, covering his face in one hand, trying to resist crying in guilt over his role in this.
Eda: For now, let's split up. This island is small, and he's even smaller. He can't have gone far.
Lilith and Hooty run toward the right, while Eda kneels down to comfort a nearly tearful Luke.
Eda: Don't worry. We'll find him.
Eda runs toward the left. Luke wipes his eyes, got up and ran off with a determined look to find King.
Luke: King? King?!
Luke reaches the edge of the jungle and pauses. There, on the beach in front of his, is King, sitting alone on a log, staring out at the sea. A sympathetic Luke walks up to him and joins him on the log, placing Rebellion over his lap. King looks down, deeply depressed over everything he's learned.
King: Eda was right, wasn't she? I was never king of anything. I'm nobody.
Luke: You are somebody. And that somebody is my little brother. Sorry I lied about what I believed, little buddy.
King: Everyone lied! And I was too caught up in the fantasy to realize it! Tears well up as he cries and sobs again. I... I don't know what to do, Luke! He sniffles. I can't tell what's real and what's fake!
King buries his face in his paws, accepting the harsh reality that's come down on him. Luke could only look down in sorrow for King, knowing what it's like to not know who you, but then looks up toward the ruined temple in the distance, a thought coming to his mind.
Luke: Something's not adding up. One of your memories is falling, right?
King: Probably another stupid thing I made up!
Luke: No! What if that's a real memory?
Luke stood up, looking to the tower but King looks down in doubt.
King: Why does it matter?
Luke: You said you remember a roar from up in that shaft. Maybe that's where you fell from! Eda found you in those ruins. There's gotta be a clue in there about where you came from!
King: King turns away, afraid. I don't know, Luke. What if the story gets worse?
Luke: Luke walks over with a smile. You might have been alone before, but you have us now. Whatever we find up there won't change that. I know you're scared, little buddy. And that's okay; 'cause I know what you're going through. Luke looks down, frowning. Ever since Grom and the Petrification Ceremony I've been worried I might not be as human as I think I am. I've been asking myself "who am I?", "what am I?", "where did I come from?". I mean, you've seen the crazy stuff I've been able to do, King. I'm not like other humans and to be honest…it scares me. I'm scared to know who I am. King widens his eyes in surprise at Luke's confession. But even though I'm scared, I want to know who I am. I want to know who my parents were and if they're alive. Why I have these powers. I don't want to live my life in fear worrying over why I'm not like other humans. Luke bends down smiling. And I know you feel the same way, King.
King: Luke…
Luke: So, what do you say, pal?
Luke extends his hand. After some thinking, King got off and takes Luke's hand in acceptance.
King: Okay.
In the jungle, Luke leads King back to Eda and Lilith, both looking worried. Eda brightens up when she spots them both.
Eda: King! You're alright!
She runs toward King, but then stops upon noticing him looking sternly up at her, immediately filling her with guilt over all her lies.
Eda: You're mad at me. I get it. I would be, too. Eda kneels down. I'm so sorry, King.
King suddenly pokes her on the cheek.
King: Boop. No more secrets, okay? You have to promise me.
Eda: Eda smiles. Only truths. I promise.
King jumps into Eda for a hug which surprises her, but she gladly returns it.
Luke: Great. Now, before we leave, we have one more thing to check out.
He points toward the tower in the distance much to the concern of Eda and Lilith.
Lilith: You want to go back in there with that…thing still lurking around?
Luke: I know it sounds like suicide but there might be a clue about who King really is in there. His last real memory was falling and hearing a roar. He must've fallen from that plugged up shaft. If we can find a way up there, we might be able to find a clue on King's past, who he is and who he came from.
Eda: That does sound possible. I never really got to the top of the tower, so I never really learned anything more about it or King.
Luke: Which is why we have to get up there. This could be King's only chance to make the first step in finding out who he is.
Eda, Lilith and Hooty can see the look of hurt and desperation in King's eye. They all smile.
Eda: You're right. I'm in. Let go up that tower.
Lilith: But how? That thing is still back there. A head on assault would be suicide. It's too powerful.
Luke: Luke holds up Rebellion and a couple Glyphs with a grin. Don't worry, leave that to me and my anti-magic sword AKA Rebellion.
Eda: I'm afraid that might not help kiddo. It'll take more than that sword and your glyphs to overpower that thing. Trust me, I know what it's capable of. We need an actual plan.
The gang look down, trying to think of an idea. King walks up Eda then turns back, looking up to Luke. There's only one hope of standing a chance against the Golem now.
King: I'm just throwing it out there, but now might be a really good time to bust out Devil Luke.
Eda and Lilith widen their eyes, having forgotten about Devil Luke.
Eda: You're talking about Luke's Devil Trigger? Eda looks to Luke. He's right kid, we might have a chance of getting past that thing if you can go devil again.
Luke: Luke groans in annoyance. Ugh! For the love of god! I can't go devil! I've done everything I could to unleash that power again! I've tried screaming out. I even tried hurting myself to bring it out. Nothing works! I can't activate my Devil Trigger.
Lilith: We need to figure how to unleash that demonic power again if we're going to get to the top of the tower.
Hooty: Maybe you're only able to transform when you're…I don't know, about to die or something.
Luke: I almost got killed 2 days ago by Amity's parents and I still didn't go devil.
Lilith rubs her chin. It's clear near-death isn't enough to unleash Luke's power.
Lilith: So, danger alone isn't enough. Perhaps if we could figure out what triggered that form the first time, we may be able to get you to unleash it again.
Eda: It's worth a try.
Luke: But I don't know how I unlocked this form in the first place. It happened after the Golden Guard jammed this into my chest.
Luke presents Rebellion, causing King to cringe a little.
King: You got stabbed with your own sword? Ouch. Insult to injury.
Eda: You told me it was after that Rebellion's power had awakened and it changed form.
Luke: Well…that's not all. As I was lying in a puddle of my own blood, I heard Amity screaming and calling out my name. And I heard your agony too, Eda. It was all making my blood boil. I got so mad that I felt something inside me snap, my sword changed…and then…I changed.
Lilith: Then perhaps that's the answer. Your devil form must be fueled by rage. The more you feel, the stronger that power gets. Combine that with your sword in its awakened state results in you assuming that form.
King: So, you're saying the only way Luke can become Devil Luke again is for him to get angry. Like, REALLY angry.
Luke: I can't just get angry because you guys tell me to. It's gotta be real from the inside.
Eda: Then what you need to do is think about something that'll make you real angry. Amity's pain caused you to get angry once, so what you need to do is imagine her getting tortured by Belos.
Luke: Wait, what?
Lilith: That's not a bad idea. And try thinking about when Edalyn got captured and almost got petrified. That may help.
Luke: Luke steps back waving his hands. Whoa, whoa! Timeout! You guys are asking me to relive some terrible memories. I don't like having to think about you guys or Amity getting hurt.
Eda, King, Lilith, and Hooty look to Luke in concern, understanding his hesitance. Eda walks up to her student, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Eda: Kid, I get where you're coming from. I don't like the idea of you thinking about those sorts of memories either. But as it stands, Lilith and I can't do much against that thing without our magic. Your Devil Form may be our only chance of getting to the top of that tower…where the answer to King's past may be. Do it for him.
Luke and Eda look to King. They can tell he looks emotionally torn up after learning the truth about himself and now desperate to find out who or what he truly is. Seeing the pleading look in his little brother's face fills Luke with sympathy and an iron resolve, strong enough to help him face his bad memories. He gives a serious look.
Luke: Alright. I'll give it a shot.
King: Luke, you don't have to do this if you don't want to.
Luke: Don't worry little buddy, I'll be fine. If this is the only way to learn about your past, then I'll face my bad memories.
Hooty: You're a good man, Luke.
Luke: You guys might wanna step back.
Eda, King, and Lilith step back and Luke sticks Rebellion to the ground before crossing his arms, concentrating real hard on the memories that would anger him most.
(Flashback)
The Golden Guard slamming the butt of his staff against Amity and causing her to scream out in pain.
The Golden Guard stabbing Luke with Yamato. And then Rebellion.
Belos torturing Amity through squeezing and electrocution, causing her to cry out in horrible pain and agony.
Eda's horrifying transformation into the Owl Beast after her duel with Lilith
Luke imagines Eda's suffering during the Petrification ceremony.
Luke could hear his crush and mentor's screams of agony.
The anger welling up inside him…results in the whites of his eyes turning black.
(End of Flashback)
And at that precise moment it happens again. The whites in Luke's eyes turn black when he opens them much to everyone's surprise.
Luke undergoes a scary transformation. He spreads his arms which brim with electricity as they become scaly black and his fingers grow claws. He gives off an animalistic growl as his teethes turn into fangs, causing everyone to cringe from the sound. His body changes via a surge of electricity, first his chest, legs, his battle coat turns into a demonic overcoat, his cape disappears, and wings grow grotesquely from his back and his hair becomes blue. His shadow could be seen morphing and soon the transformation is complete. Luke lifts his head up, growling as he reveals his face to have changed.
He throws up his head and spreads his body, releasing a ferocious roar that sends a soundwave so powerful it blows back a couple of trees, and everyone shield their faces. When it subsides Eda, Lilith, Hooty, and King watch in shock and surprise as Luke stood, looking down as he pants and growls heavily. King and Hooty hide behind Eda and Lilith respectively, all four look on in fear and concern.
Lilith: Oh…my…Titan.
Hooty: I will be haunted by this forever.
King: Luke?
Eda: Kid, is that you?
After a couple of tense moments of Luke looking down, they finally heard a snarl that made them grow nervous. They flinch and cry out in fear when Luk3 throws his head up to give a fake roar, with a mock expression, King and Hooty hiding behind Eda. After a few seconds of realizing it's not as powerful or intimidating as the one from earlier, they hear chuckling and open their eyes to see it was coming from Luke giving his usual smile and rubbing the back of his head.
Luke: How was that? Luke began laughing hysterically. The look on your faces. You were all like, "Oh, no! What have we done? He's literally turned into a monster!"
As he continues laughing, everyone deadpans at each other over his little prank. Clearly, Luke is calm and in control of his devil powers.
Eda: Hardy-har-har. You're very funny.
King: Yeah, it's him.
Luke: So…how do I look?
Everyone is smiling, now able to be proud and impressed with Luke.
King: You're hideous.
Lilith: But still you.
Eda: Dang kid. You are terrifying. And I'm loving it.
Eda activates and tosses an Ice Glyph, forming a pillar of ice from the ground behind Luke. When he turns around, for the first time he sees a full reflection of his new form and is loving it.
Luke: Whoa…this is really me? Luke takes a look at his hands. This is wicked. I'm loving this new look. He brushes his hair too. And my hair's blue like with my Pseudo Devil Trigger. Huh, I never said this before, but the colour suits me. And are these fangs coming from my mouth? Luke spun around spreading his wings. Dudes, I'm telling you, I look doubley handsome as a demon.
Eda: You got that right, kiddo.
Lilith: A human transforming into a devil. Amazing.
King: The only devil we know is Qrow? How is THIS even possible?
Eda and Lilith exchange looks, knowing how this is possible but won't say anything.
Hooty: Does this mean you can do magic on your own now?
Luke attempts to trace a spell circle but to his disappointment nothing appears.
Luke: That's a no. I guess going devil doesn't give me a magic bile sac.
Lilith: Still, this is a true wonder. Humans shouldn't normally be able to possess this kind of power. Devils no longer live on the Boiling Isles. Qrow is the only Devil around. Finding another one in the form a human is a huge discovery. Lilith goes giddy, giggling again. Ooh, I have so many questions right now and so much research to do.
Eda: We can get to all that later, nerd.
Luke returns Eda's grin.
Luke: Right. Now that I'm all powered-up…
He pulls out Rebellion and gives it a swing. It surges with blue electricity, and he spreads his wings as he gives an epic grin.
Luke: It's showtime!
Inside the castle, the monster is maintaining one of the little rock statues when it suddenly reacts to something unseen. It hisses and looks back. After a few tense seconds something invisible blasts in and smashes the Golem, sending it sliding back. It quickly pulls itself up, getting on all its limbs to see the attacker.
Devil Luke becomes visible after releasing his breath. He landed on the ground, giving the golem a grin as he held Rebellion.
Luke: Round 2, ugly! Go!
The golem hisses and morphs one of its hands into blades which he sends at Luke who took flight into the air.
Luke: Alright, Devil Luke! Let's see what you can do!
Luke held out Rebellion and spun around like a twister. He blasts off and smash into the Golem, sending it crashing into the wall. When Luke flew back the golem leapt out of the dust cloud with two axe arms to slice Luke in half. Luke quickly circles around, sliding on the ground. The Fire Glyph glows on his chest and the blue parts of his body turn red. He looks at his hands flaring with flames.
Luke: Cool! Looks like in this form my glyphs change my body! Time to show off some real firepower!
The creature turns just as Luke summons his Glyph Guns which are engulfed in flames. He fires a barrage of rapid fireballs that explode on the golem, forcing it to shield its face as it stumbles back. The Electric Glyph glows on Luke's chest and the red parts become blue again, causing his guns to surge with electricity and shoot out electric bullets that electrocute the golem and sends it staggering.
Luke switches to Rebellion which flares up with fiery blue electricity. Luke takes flight and blasts off towards the Golem to swing his sword. The Golem turns its hands into axes to block. Luke smashes Rebellion into the Golem, causing a surge of electricity from the impact as the Golem struggles to block.
While Luke held off the golem something invisible fly's low past them. It's revealed to be Eda, King, Lilith, and Hooty, riding their respective staves, having used Invisibility Glyphs. They become visible before.
Lilith: Are we sure Luke can handle this creature?
Eda: I'm worried, but Luke's tough. Plus, he's a devil now. I'm sure he can handle this thing. She gazes back to see Luke flying circles, dodging long axe-swings. I think.
Luke lands on the ground again and the golem stretches its arms to slice him. Luke swung his sword twice, parrying both axes, he follows by slicing its arms off. The creature staggers and hisses in pain. Luke grins as he held his sword.
Luke: Let's see how tough you are without your arms.
In response to that, the creature held out both its cut off arms and to Luke's shock they regenerate like a lizard's tail.
Luke: Okay…that's pretty tough.
While Luke is battling the monster, Eda flies up to the blocked hole in the ceiling. She sticks a potion into the rocks and jumps down next to Lilith, King, and Hooty.
Eda: Ready?
Lilith: Ready! Lilith brings out a bunch of potions. Hootsifer.
Hooty: Stuff me!
The Golem swung at Luke with its axes. Luke ducks one swing, he deflects two more and then swung his sword to send it flying back with an electrifying energy blade. The Golem stood its ground and sends its axes to slice Luke only for him to hold his breath and activate an Invisibility Glyph Combo, slamming the orb of Glyph into his chest and disappearing much to the creature's confusion.
It then feels its face getting punched repeatedly, causing it to stagger bag. The Golem is impaled by Rebellion and Luke reappears, giving it wave before sending out a beam of electricity from Rebellion that sends the Golem crashing into a wall. Luke brought out his Glyph Guns and crosses them, taking aim with a grin as his body turns green and the Plant Glyph appears on the guns.
Luke: Jackpot!
He sends out 2 large plant bombs that explode and engulf the creature, trapping it in vines covered in thorns. Luke victoriously spun his gun.
Luke: Yeah! Nailed it!
Eda: Nice work kid! Lily! It's now or never!
Lilith holds Hooty like a bazooka and the Owl Demon releases a barrage of potions from mouth in a most disturbing manner, causing Eda and King to look a little disgusted.
King: This is disturbing on so many levels.
The potions slam into the one Eda placed and explodes, blowing up the rocks plugging the hole. Luke arrives next to his satisfied team.
Eda: We're clear!
They hear a hissing sound and turn to see the Golem slice out of the vines and its eyes turn red with rage.
King: Uh oh!
Luke: Fly, fly, fly!
Eda and Lilith get on their staves and King gets on Luke's shoulders. They all fly up the hole with Lilith producing a glyph to light up the dark tunnel. The monster gives chase, climbing up the tunnels and jumping from platform to platform.
Our heroes soon reach the end of the tunnel.
Luke: There's...
King: There's...
Eda: Nothing here!
The gang have found themselves in an empty room with nothing but cobwebs. They get on the floor and start exploring. King hears hissing, he looks down the hole and sees the monster coming in fast.
King: It's coming!
King shrieks and scats as the monster swipes its arm. It has the five cornered against a locked door and Luke brings out his claws, giving a vicious growl. King backs into the door, and his touch triggers a reaction.
King: Huh?
The door opens, causing everyone to fall backwards into a secret room. Luke looks back, surprised to see the door but quickly ran in just as everyone else got up. They hurriedly close the door as the monster reaches toward them, causing its goopy hand to get cut off. Everyone takes deep sighs of relief.
Eda: Huh, I think we're safe... for now. But how did we get the door open?
King looks at his paw, the door opened when HE touched it. Lilith looks at the room, dumbstruck.
Lilith: This room is old. Very old.
They all begin exploring. The room was decorated with decaying plants and a skylight on the ceiling. In the middle of the room is a golden pedestal with a broken eggshell and a strange symbol carved in it. King walks up to it to sees the remains of the broken eggshell, his broken eggshell. Luke excitedly gets behind King, showing even in his demonic form his personality hasn't changed one bit.
Luke: Yes! Nailed it! I was right! I knew there was something up here! I'm like the mystery whisperer.
Eda: Glad to know even as a demon, you're still you, kiddo.
Lilith inspects the carvings of the Golem.
Lilith: It looks like that creature was made to guard whatever was in here.
Luke looks to King who walks up the pedestal.
Luke: King, does any of this feel familiar to you?
King: I'm not sure, but I think I know how to jog my memory. Eda, I'm ready.
King extends his paw to a worried Eda.
Eda: Are you sure?
King: I am.
Seeing the firm expression on his face, Eda takes the broken horn out of her hair and gives it to King, who places it on his stump. He gasps as his youngest memories return to him. Everything blacks out.
(Flashback)
King: I remember a deep roar.
An unborn King sleeps inside his egg, sleeping and growing until he hears a demonic roar from outside the shell.
King: And then, something happened...
An explosion shakes King's surrounding. The unborn King reacts to the sound but goes back to sleep.
King: But I was too small to do anything. So, I went back to sleep.
Scenes fade to black then fades in again, most likely eons later to reveal a more developed King inside the egg.
King: And the next time I woke up...
The eggshell starts to crack, and a slit of light shines through. King reacts to the light and reaches for it.
King emerges from his egg and tumbles down the steps of the pedestal. The Newborn King opens his eyes for the first time and sees the castle's mysterious symbol on the skylight. King then pulls himself across the room until he reaches the door. It magically reacts to his touch and opens, revealing the Golem behind it. The two share a look before it picks up King, cradling him and walks to the shaft. It dives down the hole with King in its arms, and King reaches for the light from the top as it disappears from view.
(End of Flashback)
Back in the present, King takes the broken horn off his stump, a look of revelation on his face as Luke walks up to him.
Luke: King...
King: That roar. It meant "son". I don't know how I know that, but I do. Someone called me their son. Luke, I think it was my dad!
Luke: Maybe that was him on all those wall carvings.
The monster breaks through the door down and prepares to strike down Luke with his axe-hand. The devil human summons Rebellion and growls, preparing to fight until King defiantly runs up between them and raises his paw.
King: Stop.
The monster suddenly pauses, and it bows to him in respect, like he's an actual king. Eda walks up next to Luke in shock.
Eda: That thing was defending King from us this whole time? Huh. Alright.
Luke: This thing must've been created to act as your bodyguard. Only question is, who made it?
King: Maybe my dad made it to protect me from something…
Luke: Or Someone.
A camera clicking was heard and the group turned around, seeing Lilith taking photos of the walls of King's room.
Lilith: Oh, sorry. Were we discussing important revelations? I'll... She clears her throat. I'll just... do this later.
She takes the photo from the camera and sheepishly hides it behind her back while Hooty eats and swallows the camera. Luke bends down to King, showing even his devil form he's still able to express his compassion.
Luke: Maybe you weren't exactly the King of Demons, but...
King: I was important to someone. King turns to Luke, hugging his horn as he tears up. If…if he's out there, I want to find him. I'm not that old! It could be possible! Would you help me?
Luke: I'd do anything for you, little buddy.
King: Then…can we keep him?
He points to the Golem still bowing much to Luke, Eda and Lilith's bemusement.
Luke, Eda & Lilith: No!
Hooty wraps his body around the three of them, who are all looking displeased.
Hooty: Yes!
After that little adventure everyone returns to the Owl House and reluctantly decides to bring the Golem with them. Fortunately, the monster is lifeless when it's outside the tower so it's no issue.
Luke is in his room having reverted to human form and is tucking King into bed while he carves the castle's symbol onto his collar medallion with a fork. Luke is wearing his hoodie; his goggles and coat are hung up.
Luke: What are you doing King?
King: That symbol was all over that tower. What if it's my name?
Luke glues the broken piece of King's horn onto the stump with glue, making it whole again. He wipes off some excess glue with his finger.
King: Aah...gooey! King puts his collar back on. It's too bad Jean-Luc stopped moving outside the ruins. I liked having a big, scary minion.
Luke looks to the golem named Jean-Luc who is sat lifelessly in the corner, though his presence still creeps him out.
Luke: Yeah. Too bad.
King: King saddens a little. Luke, is it okay to still call me "King"? It feels kind of weird when I'm not the king of anything.
Luke: You might not be the King of Demons but you're still King of my Heart.
King thinks for a moment and becomes happy.
King: Yeah! Goodnight, Luke.
King lies down, and Luke kisses him on the forehead.
King: And Francois.
King holds up his plush rabbit. Luke kisses it.
King: Now, Jean-Luc.
Luke looks at the inanimate Jean-Luc; some of his fleshy red goop drips onto his knee. Luke grunts in disgust and starts walking backwards towards the door.
Luke: Yeah…no. Goodnight little buddy!
And with that he leaves and closes the door.
In the living room, Eda and Lilith are reading a book together and the table is laid out with photos Lilith took of the ruins. Luke walks into the room.
Luke: So, what are we looking at ladies?
Lilith: Edalyn and I have been looking over a few books I managed to bring with me before I left the Emperor's Coven. The history of Sparda and Darkwing Corvid.
Eda: But so far, we've got nothing new. These books just tell us what we already know.
Luke: Isn't there anything on Rebellion?
Eda: No, none. Sparda never used this sword before his final battle with Belos so there's really no history about it.
Luke: Eda, you told me before Sparda forged Rebellion and left it here. Didn't he say anything about it?
Eda: Not much. Only that it's special, it has the power to repel and absorb magic and he was leaving it for someone important. He casted a spell that created a magical safeguard around the sword that only a human could get through. I didn't understand why he did that, but I never asked because I trusted he knew what he was doing. He never told me who he was leaving it for or what it's made of.
Luke: Okay…what about Yamato? Whenever me and the Golden fought, both our swords kept reacting to each other.
Lilith: Most likely because both Rebellion and Yamato originally belonged to Sparda. They're connected. In a way, they're brothers.
Luke: What about that sword I snagged from Belos? The one I gave you, Eda.
Eda: You mean Force Edge? I guess you could say it's the daddy sword. It was Sparda's signature weapon.
Luke: Looks too lame to be a daddy sword.
Eda: It's more powerful than you think, kid. A little spell was placed on it that sealed away its true power when Sparda…
Eda pauses, she and Lilith look down in mourning, the latter also filled with guilt and remorse, causing Luke to frown in sympathy.
Luke: When Sparda died, right?
Eda and Lilith give Luke looks of surprise as he kept frowning.
Luke: I saw murals of The Great War. And Belos told me himself. He killed Sparda, didn't he?
Lilith: Yes…he did. Sparda lost his final battle with Belos.
Eda: He killed him. And Belos claimed Yamato and Force Edge as his trophies.
Luke: That's why you were so pissed off to see the Golden Guard holding Yamato.
Eda: Yeah. Pretty much.
Eda keeps looking down in mourning while Lilith looked away shame, having played a part in Sparda's death with her betrayal.
Luke: Sorry for your loss.
Eda and Lilith give Luke grateful smiles.
Eda: Aww. Thanks kid. And hey, don't look so down for us. Sure, losing Sparda was…hard for all of us…but for his sake, we continued living. At least…as best as we could.
Lilith: Yes…Sparda may be gone from this world, but he's not gone from our lives. Lilith saddens. "Though he may be gone from mine after I betrayed him to the emperor."
Luke: There's still one thing I don't get. Why did Rebellion react the way it did when it got jammed into my chest? And why did it turn me into a devil?
Eda: Coming into contact with your blood must've awakened Rebellion's full power. I don't know why YOUR blood awakened it, but I do know this at least… Eda smiles. Wherever Sparda is he can rest easy knowing the sword he left is with the right person. Luke smiles at that. Speaking of devils, can you go Devil Luke at will now.
Luke: Yup. Luke holds up his arm which goes into devil mode, his claws emerging. I think I can get real used to this. Since I'm going to be a devil full-time now, mind telling me any special perks? I've played enough video games to know that these kindd of transformations come with more than just flight and superhuman strength.
Eda: Smart logic there. You're right. There are perks to being a devil. One of them is a regenerative healing factor.
Luke: Regenerative healing? You mean when I sometimes shrug off or survive fatal blows and my wounds close in seconds.
Lilith: Exactly that, Luke. And it's all due to your aura.
Luke: My aura? You mean this?
A crackle of blue energy briefly coats Luke before disappearing.
Lilith: Precisely. Aura is a manifestation of the magic flowing inside a devil. A sort of defense mechanism. In battle, aura is primarily used a defensive mechanism. It coats the wielder in a protective forcefield. As a result of this magic, devils are given regenerative healing. Any fatal injury they sustain heals itself without the need of a spell.
Luke: So, that's why my wounds keep closing up so fast ever since Grom.
Eda: Yup. But keep in mind, your aura doesn't make you invincible. You'll still feel pain. And it does have its drawbacks. If you end up taking too many hits in a fight, your aura will break, leaving you vulnerable for a fatal strike. Get stabbed in the heart or a vital organ, no regenerative healing will save you.
Luke: Sounds like something from my vid games too. The character has HP set and if it goes down to 0, it's game over.
The Clawthorne Sisters exchange confused looks, not understanding human video games concept.
Eda: Not sure what that means, but yeah, we'll go with that. Just remember, kid. Your Devil Trigger makes you powerful, but it doesn't make you invulnerable.
Luke: I'll keep that mind. But what about those moves I pulled off back there, with the Glyphs appearing on my body and changing my colour and attack styles? Is that another devil thing?
Eda: Yes and no. That was most likely your Resonance.
Luke: My Resonance?
Lilith: Resonance is another way for a devil to use their aura, projecting it in a more tangible form. It manifests in the form a unique ability for the witch. For example, this could be the ability to control objects with telekinesis, time control, super speed, there are many possibilities. Different devils have different Resonances, the power associated with this kind of magic is incredibly unique.
Luke: So, in English that would mean…
Eda: In English, it's your very own superpower. And your Resonance is special kid. From what I've seen, it gives you the ability to change form by applying glyphs to your own body, allowing you to use a variety of elemental attacks depending on the Glyph you use.
Luke: Whoa! That's awesome! Resonances are way past cool!
Eda: I can definitely agree with that kiddo. And best part, even in their witch forms, devils are still able to use their Resonance and Aura.
Luke: Well, I still have my aura, but… His eyes furrow in confusion. I don't think I can use my Resonance right now, Eda.
Eda: Yeah, that's no surprise. It's likely due to you being human. In your case, you're only able to use your resonance in your devil form. Another reason why it's special…just like you.
Luke: Speaking of humans, how do I even have this kind of power? I thought as a human, I don't have magic in me.
The Clawthorne Sisters exchange looks again, not sure how to answer a that question. They know the answer, but they can't risk Luke knowing at this time. They have no choice but to make something up for now until they're ready to tell the truth.
Lilith: That…does puzzle me. Humans aren't normally supposed to possess any magical abilities. But you're different Luke. Not only do you have an affinity with the Rebellion, but you're able to transform into a devil, complete with an aura and your own Resonance.
Eda: I'm not quite sure myself, kid. But I do know it has something to do with Sparda. I'm sure we'll figure it out along the way.
Lilith: With a smile, Luke sits by the table with the sisters. There is a lot to research now. A new portal to the human realm, your new powers, Rebellion, Sparda, the curse, and King's origins.
Lilith puts the Sparda book down and reads from another as the three of them examine the photos taken of the ruins as Luke walks over and sits by the table.
Eda: I've never seen markings like this. Ooh, is it some kind of ancient language?
Lilith: And those old carvings. Who were they depicting?
Eda: Eda looks to Luke. Any ideas, "mystery whisperer"?
Luke smiles and picks up one of the photos.
Luke: I have no idea. But whatever we discover, we'll be there for King... no matter what.
The photo he's holding is of the carvings depicting a large, spear-wielding demon who looks similar to King.
The little guy may not be the King of Demons, but he's definitely someone important. So important he was left a bodyguard to protect him. Not only that, but it seems Rebellion and Yamato truly do have a connection to the legendary dark knight, Sparda. Who is he? What's his connection to both swords? To Belos? And quite possibly, to Luke? Now the residents of the Owl House have three things to investigate. A way back to the human world for Luke, Sparda, and King's origins.
So, King isn't a despotic demon overlord. But he must've been important to someone if he was hidden and left a bodyguard. Just who is King? What are his origins? Is his dad still alive? And just what are the mysteries behind Luke's devil powers and the legacy Sparda has left behind via the Rebellion?
Coming up next, Eda and Lilith have adjusted well to the curse, and all is going well except for Luke whose research about a portal to Human Realm has proved fruitless until the sisters' loving but estranged mother, Gwendolyn Clawthorne pays Eda a visit, claiming to have a cure for Eda's curse…only to be rejected by said daughter and neglect the other. In exchange for help from Luke, Gwen offers to give our goggleheaded hero information that will help him get home. Luke soon discovers Gwen's source for a cure is a con…a con that may tear the entire Clawthorne family apart unless he can stop it.
