Chapter 6; The New Wings
After they returned to the village, Gobber took all of the teens to a campfire on a watchtower. Gobber was telling the story about how he lost his arm and his leg. "And with one twist, he took my hand and swallowed it whole! I saw the look on his face… I was delicious. He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one took my leg."
"Isn't it weird to think your hand was inside a dragon? Like if your mind was still in control of it, you could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing his heart." Fishlegs said before Snotlout said. "I swear, I'm so angry. I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight, with my face."
"It's the wings and tail you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon." Gobber said and Hiccup got an idea. Hiccup got up and Eric said to him. "What's up Hiccup?"
"I need your help. Follow me." Hiccup said as they both got up as Gobber said to them. "All right, I'm off to bed. You should be, too. Tomorrow we get to the big boys slowly but surely making our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare. But who'll win the honor of killing it?" Astrid then noticed that Hiccup, Eric, and their Pokemon were gone. Hiccup to them to the blacksmith shop and Eric said to him. "So what's your idea?"
"I am going to build a new tail fin for Toothless."
"Toothless? Oh you mean the Night Fury. Wait? Why did you give the Night Fury a nickname?"
"I felt like we bonded last time. Didn't you feel like it was the same for you and that Steam Whip."
"We didn't bond. We were just keeping an eye out for trouble."
"I count that as bonding."
"Find. Then how about Honorstream?"
"Perfect."
"Great. Now explain to me your plan?"
"I think I can make a tail fin for Toothless."
"Ok? But why do you need my help?"
"I need you to get two baskets of fish ready for tomorrow."
"So to recap. You and Flare are going to build a new tail fin for Toothless. Meanwhile, me, Knight, and Tera are going to get two baskets of fish for Toothless and Honorstream. Is that correct?"
"Yes."
"Ok." Eric said as he and Knight, and Tera went to get fish from the store house. So throughout the night Hiccup and Flare had made the tail fin.
The following morning, they returned to the cove with two baskets full of fish, one on each of their backs. "Hey, Toothless, Honorstream. We bought breakfast. I hope you guys are hungry." Hiccup said as they each gave a basket of fish to Toothless and Honorstream. Toothless and Honorstream got close, and while Honorstream started to eat, Toothless started to growl at the basket. Hiccup noticed that Toothless was focusing on an eel that was inside the basket. Hiccup picked it up and it scared not only Toothless, but Honorstream too. As Hiccup threw the eel away, Eric said. "So dragons are afraid of eels? Did you guys know that?"
"No, we didn't." Hiccup said as Toothless and Honorstream started to eat the fish. Hiccup took this chance to get behind Toothless. At first Hiccup tried to line up the new tail wing with Toothless's tail. But it wasn't working, mostly because Toothless was constantly moving his tail. So Hiccup took a seat on Toothless tail. Toothless felt Hiccup on his tail, then the new tail fin. Toothless was surprised, but feeling the tail wing, Toothless got ready to take off. Eric noticed that and said to Hiccup. "Uh? Hiccup? Get off of Toothless now!"
"Why?" Hiccup said before Toothless took off. Hiccup was holding onto the tail, and during the flight, Hiccup noticed that the tail wing wasn't catching the wind. So Toothless was going down. Hiccup opened the wing and they flew out of the cove. They flew up high and dive down back into the cove. Toothless then noticed Hiccup was still riding his tail. So Toothless flicked Hiccup off his tail. Eric caught Hiccup, but without Hiccup on Toothless tail, Toothless crashed into the water. Honorstream help Toothless out of the water, and Eric said as he put Hiccup down. "I guess if you want Toothless to fly then you are going to ride with him."
"Yeah. I start to come up with more ideas. But later, we have to get back to dragon training." Hiccup said before he pulled out his notebook and started to leave. On the way out, Hiccup found the eel and got an idea. "You guys go. I'll catch up." Eric said as Hiccup picked up the eel and their Pokemon left the cove. Once they were gone, Eric turned to Honorstream. "Hey, Honorstream. We need to talk." Eric said to Honorstream. Honorstream then swam to Eric and Eric said. "Listen. If you want your friend to fly, you're going to need my friend's help. And I want to keep my friend from ending up as a splat of the ground. So can we work together?" Eric reached out his hand, and after a few seconds, Honorstream touched Eric's hand. The two of them had formed a bond, a bond built because they needed to protect one friend. Eric then ran after Hiccup.
In the arena, Gobber gave everyone a bucket of water and said. "Today is about teamwork." Gobber then opened a cage and a cloud of green smoke filled the area. "Now, a wet dragon head can't light its fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky. One head breathes gas, the other head lights it. Your job is to know which is which." Gobber said as everyone broke into groups. Hiccup, Eric, Flare and Knight were Fishlegs and Sparky. Astrid and Spikeball were with Ruffnut and Pinch. And Snotlout and Hookblade were with Tuffnut and Sting. Snotlout then said as everyone was looking around. "If that dragon shows either of his faces, I'm gonna… There!" Snotlout and Tuffnut then threw their water, but it was the girls, not the dragon. Ruffnut then said to them. "Hey, it's us, idiots!"
"Your butts are getting bigger. We thought you were a dragon." Tuffnut said before Snotlout said. "Not that there's anything wrong with a dragonesque figure…" Astrid put down her bucket and punched Snotlout in the face, and Ruffnut threw her bucket at Tuffnut's face. Tuffnut was knocked down, and the Zippleback grabbed and pulled him back. The girls were then knocked down by the Zippleback's tail, causing Astrid to lose her water. Tuffnut then ran past Hiccup, Eric, and Fishlegs, who said. "Chances of survival are dwindling to single digits now."
"Don't focus on that. Focus on that!" Eric said as one of the Zippleback heads came out of the smoke. The head got close to Fishlegs and Fishlegs threw his water at the head. Unfortunately it was the head that shot out gas. The head wasn't happy and fired a stream of gas at Fishlegs. Fishlegs ran away, knocking the bucket of water out of Eric's hands. Once the other head showed it's Hiccup tried to hit it with the water, but he missed. The Zippleback was going to attack Hiccup, and before Gobber and Coal were going to intervene, the Zippleback backed away in fear. As Eric reached the lock, Hiccup said as he scared the Zippleback back into the cage. "Back, back, back! Now, don't you make me tell you again! Yes, that's right. Back into your cage. Now think about what you've done." Hiccup then removed the eel he had placed inside his vest into the cage. The Pokemon shut the cage and Eric locked it. Hiccup then turned to everyone, who were just speechless. "Ok, so are we done? Cause we've got some things we need to… Yep, I'll see you tomorrow!" Hiccup said as he, Eric, and their Pokemon left to work on Toothless' new tail. No one knew that Hiccup and Eric were going to discover interesting things about dragons.
