Chapter 6: Amateur Job
New York City…
Tuesday, May 10, 11:23 pm…
"This is G. Gorden Godfrey reporting on the new 'hero' in New York City." Godfrey declared as he air-quoted hero.
"This Spider-Man has been going around this great city for nearly a month now, and what has he done? Well, I can say he hasn't been a hero, people!" Godfrey stated.
"So he's stopped a few crimes as well as Hobgoblin and Shocker. But have you seen the destruction he has caused during these so-called acts of heroism?!" Godfrey questioned.
"Destruction to roads, buildings, businesses are just the start, people! How could someone be so irresponsible?!" Godfrey wondered.
"And look at this footage captured by the Daily Bugle of Spider-Man fighting this Lizard and GREEN GOBLIN!" Godfrey continued.
"You heard right, folks, a brand new Goblin people, and who is he fighting? Spider-Man! Doesn't that seem a little coincidental?" Godfrey suggested.
"Ever since Hobgoblin was captured, new freaks have been showing up, and who has been there to combat these freaks? That's right, Spider-Man!" Godfrey shouted.
"How can we know if he isn't just setting up these events to make him look like a hero? How can we trust someone who is working out of the law?!" Godfrey questioned.
"The Justice League was put under UN supervision for a reason! But Spider-Man is showing blatant disrespect to this!" Godfrey stated.
"How can we even begin to believe in someone who undermines the United Nations?" Godfrey questioned.
"Hurry up before the cops show up!" A Masked Robber demanded as he shattered the glass of an electronic store and stole the TV that had been playing Gorden Godfrey.
"Why don't you hold these bags and move fast?" Another Robber spat as the third grabbed the last bag from the wrecked store they had cleaned out.
"Shut it! It's your fault that we have to do this dirty work after we failed the last job! So we need to regain the boss's trust, and maybe we'll get some of those new weapons!" The First spat.
"Oh wow, that sounds interesting. Mind explaining?" A Voice inquired.
"The hell are you talking about, you know what!" The First Robber shouted as he closed the van and turned to his two compatriots.
"We didn't say anything." The Second Robber stated.
"Then who did?" The First questioned.
"Oh, you know…just a friend from the neighborhood." Spider-Man snipped as the three looked up to see the arachnid hero crouching on a lamppost.
"And this friend doesn't like people stealing from local store owners," Spider-Man stated as he fired a web into one of the robbers.
Spider-Man pulled the Robber up before kicking him into the pavement below, knocking the man out. He quickly followed as he turned around and fired two webs at the other two, who pulled out their guns.
The web hit both guns allowing Spider-Man to yank them out of their hands. Now disarmed, the remaining two were easy work for the arachnid hero as he knocked them out and tied the three up in a web.
"Did they really think robbing a single store was going to get them much? How stupid are criminals?" Spider-Man sighed as he hanged them upside down, leaving a note.
"It could be that this isn't their first target. Check the back of the van." Jett pointed out.
"Right," Spider-Man replied as he walked to the back of the van.
He attempted to open it only for it to be locked, but it didn't matter as he tore it open. In the back were several bags full of money and other valuable items. Spider-Man sifted through the haul, noting it contained items from several stores.
"Looks like these guys were on some spree. Still, it's not like it's any more than a bank heist." Spider-Man noted.
"They said something about giving the stuff to make it up to their boss for better weapons." Jett reminded.
"True because with simple pistols, they aren't robbing any bank in New York City, especially with only three guys." Spider-Man agreed.
"Maybe their boss is the same guy who gave Shocker his gauntlets." Jett theorized.
"That could be, and if my theory is right that Oscorp is behind all of this, then there might be an answer there," Spider-Man murmured.
"If you didn't knock them out, you could have asked." Jett pointed out.
"Oh…right." Spider-Man sighed as he facepalmed.
"Either way, you're going to have to wait a little while to break in as security is still high over there after Norman Osborn's disappearance," Jett stated as Spider-Man jumped to a wall.
"Give it a few days. They won't be there for too long." Spider-Man replied as he crawled up to the roof.
"Sure. By the way, the silent alarm for a Wayne Tech facility went off. Sending you the directions." Jett informed.
"Got it. Inform the police of these guys if you'd please." Spider-Man requested as he swung off.
As Spider-Man swung away, he was unaware that he was being watched by a girl who wore a Mongolian War mask and a black gi with a hood. She had been tailing the boy for the past few hours without him being the wiser and was interested in him.
"He really likes playing hero." Maya chuckled as she easily maneuvered between buildings.
"It would be very fun to mess with him. I wonder how strong he really is." Maya wondered as she headed back to return home.
"I guess I'll find out when he goes to break into Oscorp," Maya smirked, having heard one half of Spider-Man's conversation.
Santa Prisca…
"So you have no idea how this Spider-Man can do what you can do and more?" Deathstroke questioned as Black Spider kneeled before him.
"I have no clue, sir. I don't know how he copied my tech." Black Spider responded.
"I see. Well, no matter, he poses no threat to us. I just needed confirmation." Deathstroke replied.
"You're dismissed," Deathstroke stated though Black Spider remained where he was.
"Did you not hear me?" Deathstroke questioned.
"I did, but I wanted to ask if I could kill him." Black Spider requested.
"You wish to kill him?" Deathstroke asked.
"Yes, he basically stole my whole thing! I can't let that stand." Black Spider explained.
"I see, but you still need to accompany the girl. If the time comes that he must die. You'll be the one to do the job." Deathstroke stated.
"Very well." Black Spider replied as he left.
New York City Sewers…
"See Norman, everything is going to be better." Green Goblin chuckled as he strode through the mirky sewer water.
"Alone, you were at Kingpin's mercy, but together we will on top." Green Goblin smirked as he looked at his reflection in the water, only to see Norman Osborn instead.
"Yes, you're right. I'm done being walked over!" Norman replied.
"Good. Because we have some work to do." Green Goblin stated as small flames escaped his eyes.
"After all, being away from home for so long is bound to stir some trouble, and we can't have that." Green Goblin said as he hopped out of the water.
"What do you have in mind?" Norman inquired.
"Oh, just you wait and see." Green Goblin replied as a ball of fire formed in his hand.
"It'll be killer." Green Goblin snickered.
New York City…
The Next Day…
Jay smacked the alarm clock on his side table as he sluggishly got out of bed. He was still getting used to the hero routine, and the late nights and little sleep was almost too much. But he still needed to go to school.
"How does Batman do this?" Jay wondered as he knew The Dark Knight was one who went out mostly at night.
Slowly he put on his clothes and brushed his teeth before heading downstairs and greeting Curt, who was doing better than he was two days prior. Thankfully reconstruction was finally proceeding with Star Labs as the debris was all gone.
So in a few short months, he'll be back to work. For now, though, he was offering his services as a substitute teacher and a teacher for summer school. Speaking of Summer, it's only a few weeks before the break.
When it came, he could finally sleep in after going out as Spider-Man in the night. Plus, he wouldn't have to worry about schoolwork. Soon he left the house and made his way to the bus stop so he could get a little more sleep on the bus.
Once he got to school, he droned on through class, just getting the school part of his day over with. When the bell finally rang, ending the day, Jay made his way out of the school as Jett went home to get things the way they were for when his sister came back home.
As for Jay, he was going to Oscorp to stake it out and figure out the best place to break in. But he could necessarily do that as himself, but it would be best to do it as Spider-Man. So quickly, Jay ducked into an alley and changed into his costume.
Swinging out after hiding his backpack, Spider-Man swung to Oscorp Tower. This was also good practice for his web-swinging. He was getting better, but it was going to take a while before he got proficient at it.
But for now, he was pretty good at it as people watched as he swung over their heads. He didn't mind that, though, as it wouldn't be any problem for him. Though there was the fact that evidently his fight between himself, Green Goblin, and Lizard was recorded.
He didn't even notice that Eddie Brock was there, but then again, he was focused on something else. Thankfully the footage wasn't great and didn't reveal much, so everything was fine. Though Godfrey, of course, used it to call him incompetent.
Sure, Spider-Man couldn't catch Goblin, but he did take care of Lizard. Though no one would know about that. Still, Godfrey used it to fuel the fire of disdain towards him as people complained about his actions.
A notable one was the owner of the café he had crashed into when he was fighting Shocker. To be fair, at least that part was a good point and something he had to work on. Eventually, Spidey spotted Oscorp Tower and made his way over.
When he landed on the roof of an adjacent building, it reminded him of the last time he was here not too long ago. At that time, he hadn't even seen himself becoming a hero nor looking for the source of the two Goblins and Shocker.
"So much happened in so little time." Spider-Man sighed as he looked at the building's roof.
There were no notable entries he could easily access without setting off an alarm, and Spider-Man didn't want anyone to know he was there. Which meant he would probably have to go in from below.
Jumping down and shooting a web, Spidey swung to the back end of the building where the loading dock was. This, too, wouldn't be a viable entrance as it was heavily guarded. So he continued to inspect the building from a distance before calling Jett for help.
"How's the stakeout going?" Jett asked as he picked up.
"Not great so far. I don't see a way in without busting in. I hadn't noticed it before when I just swung around, but this place has a good amount of security." Spider-Man answered.
"That's to be expected. After all, it is a multibillion-dollar company with military contracts." Jett replied.
"Do you think you can dig up and schematics on the building?" Spider-Man inquired.
"I can try, but I can't guarantee anything," Jett responded as he went silent for a few minutes.
"Well, I couldn't get an updated schematic. I have one of when the building was built from the city commission." Jett stated.
"They may have done some changes since then, but it looks like your best bet is either from one of the many air vents or from the basement," Jett revealed.
"How could I get in from the basement?" Spider-Man asked.
"It connects through the sewers. You should be able to find a drain down there for the basement." Jett explained.
"Sounds good. It should be the best way to get in without being spotted from outside. Though I really hate how much I've been going into the sewers lately." Spider-Man replied.
"Well, I'll leave you to find that I have to get back to resetting some of Sara's stuff I used," Jett said as he hung up.
"Guess I better find the nearest manhole." Spider-Man sighed.
"I hate the sewers," Spider-Man muttered.
Watchtower…
"Is that all the metahuman facilities we've taken down so far?" Batman inquired.
"Yes, with that, we have cleared fifteen facilities." Miss Martian informed.
"However, none were the source and head of the worldwide metahuman trafficking. Nor has it put any dent in the overall taking and weaponizing of children." Miss Martian added.
"Don't be too disappointed. While it may not stop it completely, those kids are still safe." Wonder Woman assured via hologram.
"Either way, it's time for a change of topic," Aquaman stated as he took control of the meeting.
"Specifically about the situation in New York concerning the Spider-Man and the rise of powered villains in the city." Aquaman began as a picture of Spider-Man was displayed.
"We still don't know whether he's a true hero, but we do know that because of him and those he fought, eyes around New York are much more attentive." Aquaman continued.
"Which means missions to New York by The Team must be temporarily suspended as there is too much risk to being seen." Batman finished in Aquaman's stead.
"People everywhere are on high alert to get a look at him. Meaning if we do need to go to New York, it needs to be those who are experts on stealth." Batman stated.
"Do we have a plan on finding out the true intentions of Spider-Man?" Wonder Woman inquired via hologram.
"We were investigating him, but we have yet to find much out. Unfortunately, the initial response team was sidetracked by the Shocker before they could find Spider-Man." Miss Martian explained.
"I suggest that we focus more on combating the Light and their plan instead of the Spider-Man. From what we've seen, he does seem to be a hero." Aquaman said.
"For now, we'll watch him from afar, especially with new restrictions put on the league by the UN or, more specifically, Lex Luthor." Batman declared.
"Everyone is dismissed," Batman stated as the meeting ended. Miss Martian left first to give The Team a rundown of the meeting.
"So, how did it go?" Wonder Girl asked first as Miss Martian joined the team.
"Just the usual. But it seems missions in New York are going to dwindle." Miss Martian responded.
"What happened?" Superboy inquired.
"It's because of Spider-Man. All eyes in New York are far more focused nowadays and with the league still restricted under the UN…." Miss Martian began.
"Then, if it is discovered that the Justice League as a secret ops team working under the radar, it won't go well." Robin finished.
"Exactly." Miss Martian nodded.
"Which is why if any missions are needed in New York, they'll be given to those who are experts in stealth." Miss Martian stated.
"So basically, Robin and his little troop." Blue Beetle replied as Robin elbowed him in the stomach.
"Sorry." Blue Beetle sighed.
"There's also Nightwing who's still going solo with Oracle, who can help when needed." Miss Martian reminded.
"Either way, it's only the city itself. We still have the rest of the world to cover, so let's get to work." Miss Martian declared.
New York City…
Sewers Below Oscorp…
"God, the smell never gets better, does it?" Spider-Man wondered as he crawled to where the drain was supposed to be.
"Should be just ahead," Spider-Man murmured as he rounded a corner.
"What the hell?" Spider-Man gasped as he noticed a large hole where the drain was.
He crawled over to the hole and looked around it, making sure no one was waiting above. Spidey stuck his head out just slightly and noticed several security personnel and scientists unconscious. Making sure it was safe, he jumped to the ceiling and kept out of sight of the cameras.
"What happened here?" Spider-Man wondered as he disabled the cameras in the basement.
Taking a look around, he did see clear signs of a fight with several burn marks on the walls, floor, and ceiling. That left a single culprit to Spider-Man as no doubt Green Goblin had just been in this room.
"What is he doing back here? I mean, sure, this is the place that gave him the Oz Formula, but what does he need here?" Spider-Man wondered.
He cracked the door to the basement and peaked into the floor above, seeing it look fairly normal with no signs of struggle or battle. Confused, he returned to the basement to see if there were anywhere else Goblin could have gone.
Spider-Man opened several doors only to see more unconscious people and burnt rooms. It seems that Green Goblin had cleared house in the basement. But other than that, there were no signs of Goblin taking something or going anywhere.
At least it wasn't obvious where he went, especially as it didn't seem as he tore his way through upstairs as he did the basement. Knowing that it was only a matter of time before security would find this mess and close the hole, Spider-Man had no choice but to press forward.
"I would stick till tonight, but by then, this entrance will be sealed up. Or at least be heavily guarded." Spider-Man thought as he jumped to the ceiling and crawled into an air vent.
"Let's find the security room to see the camera footage of the basement." Spider-Man decided as he crawled through the vents.
Unfortunately, the wall-crawler had no idea where he had to go to find the security room, but while he searched, he could at least see what was going on in the building. Even though the Green Goblin had broken through the basement, everything was…normal.
It made no sense! How could Goblin make such a ruckus and not be noticed once he entered the main building? Unless he just went back into the sewers, but what would be the point in that? None of what happened fit into place in Spidey's head.
"Either way, I'm going to have to find out since I'm not leaving anytime soon." Spider-Man thought as he made it to a vent that opened to the main entrance.
"Literally, no one is panicking? What can Green Goblin turn invisible or something?" Spider-Man wondered as the front door opened up.
"Whoa. That guy is one chef hat away from being the Pillsbury Doughboy." Spider-Man commented as the large form of Wilson Fisk entered the building.
The large man wore a white suit top and black pants with a purple turtleneck underneath his suit. He approached the front desk, and the employee stationed there escorted him further into the building. Unfortunately, they were too far down for Spider-Man to hear them.
"Who was that Fat Lex Luthor?" Spider-Man questioned as he continued on his way.
He aimlessly crawled around the ventilation until he found an exit into the elevator shaft. Hopping out, Spider-Man crawled up the shaft until he heard the elevator rising from below him. Seeing a free ride up, he waited until it got close and jumped onto the elevator's roof.
"May I ask who else will be here?" Fisk inquired in the elevator Spider-Man stood atop of.
"The other party is Lexcorp, Mr. Fisk. Since both your company and theirs have offered up a closed-door offer, the board decided to have a meeting to discuss who's offer was better." The Secretary explained.
"They will hear both offers and see which they will rather take. If neither are to their liking, they will continue with making the company public." The Secretary added.
"Very well. As an…old friend of Norman's. I know he wouldn't want his company stripped apart by Lexcorp." Fisk replied as the elevator neared the top.
"Guess this is my stop," Spider-Man whispered as he jumped to the other side of the shaft and entered the vent.
"Let's hope the security room is up here. If not, then Norman Osborn's office will have to do." Spider-Man murmured as he crawled through the vent.
He explored the dark ventilation, only stopping each time he saw another vent or even a single inch of light. His exploration ended when a large pocket of light caught his attention as he crawled to the source.
"Well, that looks like a security room," Spider-Man smirked as he looked through the vent at the guards looking at the many screens.
"I should wait until they're all gon…." Spider-Man began before the vent cover broke free, and he hit the ground behind the four security guards who were in the room.
"Uh…hi there. Sorry to drop in. I was just…looking where to get the guest pass." Spider-Man apologized as the guards drew their guns.
"Sorry! Sorry! I'm really sorry!" Spider-Man repeated as he knocked out each guard and webbed them up.
"Okay, let's see what I can dig up," Spider-Man murmured as he fiddled with the computer.
He had some trouble as he realized that this wasn't the only security room as every five floors had their own security room to monitor. But after digging into the computer a little, he was able to gain access to other cameras in the building.
"I may not be good with this as Jett, but I can still manage working with a computer." Spider-Man thought.
"Let's see if I can get the footage of when Goblin broke in," Spider-Man murmured as he attempted to gain access.
But his access was denied without proper ID clearance, meaning he would need staff clearance. Turning around, he looked at the security guards he had knocked out to see who was the higher-ranked one.
When he found the one he needed, he took his ID before going back to the computer and swiped the card. However, it came up as an error, so he scanned again but once again got another error. This went on for a few minutes until he turned the card over, and it was read.
"Okay, let's see what we've got." Spider-Man sighed as he looked through the footage.
He was surprised when he came up with nothing at all. In fact, everything looked normal, and Goblin never even came in. Spider-Man was confused as he made sure the cameras were still out but was surprised that they were up and still no sign of any fight.
"What the…wait," Spider-Man muttered as he looked at the footage closer. Eventually, he noticed that it was all looping footage to keep people from looking.
"Shit, how did Goblin manage this?" Spider-Man wondered.
"He's definitely smarter than I thought he was, but someone's going to notice eventually," Spider-Man noted.
"But it explains why there wasn't an immediate response to his entry. Now the only question is, where did he go next?" Spider-Man questioned as he jumped back into the vent.
"No way he's in the ventilation like I am as all the vents in the basement were locked up, so what did he do?" Spider-Man wondered as he crawled around.
As he crawled through the vents, he heard voices down some of the passageways, but he didn't go near it as it wasn't his objective. Now that he was in, he needed to find out about Oz Formula was and whether or not Oscorp was behind more.
He remembered about the labs he saw in the tour, but no doubt that wasn't where he would find what he wanted. But he knew where to find out that information, and that was Norman Osborn's office. At least, in theory, it should be on his computer.
"Hopefully, Jett is free now." Spider-Man hoped as he trudged forward.
Oscorp Bottom Floor…
The workday was coming to a close as many employees began their trek home, save the ones that were to stay overnight and those in the meeting. Guards began locking up the shipping yard, but as one pulled out his keys to lock the door, he was knocked out when his head hit the door.
Before he could hit the floor, he was caught by Maya, who was dawned in the same outfit she wore the night before. She dragged the unconscious guard out of the sight of the cameras before swiping his keys and entering the building.
Maya expertly hid in the shadows, avoiding being caught by all the guards and those who got too close she easily knocked out. When she found a place she could be alone, she tapped onto a screen attached to her left wrist and pulled up a 3D map of the building.
"Love getting full schematics of buildings with ease." Maya chuckled as she plotted a path.
Once she had her path, Maya made her way, slipping into ventilation and then into the elevator before disabling the cameras. With access to the elevator, she would be able to go straight up just as she wanted.
"Let's have some fun, Spider-Man," Maya smirked.
Oscorp Conference Room…
"Now that everyone is here, we can begin the meeting." A Delegator declared.
"Representing Lexcorp is Lena Luthor, and representing Fisk Industries is Wilson Fisk." The Delegator continued.
"We have gathered here to hear the offers both companies have in buying Oscorp before it goes public. So please, Ms. Luthor, you may begin." The Delegator insisted.
"Thank you. If you allow Lexcorp to buy your company, not only will there be significant pay raises but the opportunity to gain employment in other Lexcorp sites." Lena began.
"I doubt anyone would want that, especially with the recent attack you suffered." Fisk snickered.
"That was on a factory where no one in this building would even be in," Lena replied.
"Still, I'd hate to imagine what would happen if someone like the Shocker were to attack again," Fisk stated.
"Security at Lexcorp is the best in the business. Any main building will be impenetrable." Lena explained.
"Please, let's stay on topic. Mr. Fisk, would you please remain silent until it is your time to speak." The Delegator requested.
"Very well," Fisk replied.
"Now, Ms. Luthor, please continue." The Delegator said, but before Lena could continue, the doors to the room burst open.
"That will not be necessary." A Voice stated as everyone in the room went wide-eyed. For in the door neatly dressed in a suit was Norman Osborn himself.
"MR. OSBORN!" The Delegator gasped.
"In the flesh," Norman smirked as he walked into the room.
"My apologies for interrupting this meeting, but it is to my understanding that during my small absence that the board was selling MY company," Norman stated.
"But I will not allow such a thing to happen." Norman snickered.
"Well, certainly this is uh…." The Delegator muttered, not knowing what to do next.
"This is an unexpected development, and the board will need to speak with Mr. Osborn." The Delegator stated.
"I'm sorry for the inconvenience Ms. Luthor and to you as well, Wilson." Norman apologized as the two stood up.
"I just wished you came back earlier so that I didn't have to waste my time." Lena scoffed as she left.
"It's good to see you safe, Norman. Though it is odd seeing you back after disappearing." Fisk stated as he stood before Norman.
"Well, that was just me going on a…mental health break. I needed to find myself and find myself I most certainly did, Wilson." Norman replied.
"It was my mistake to not bring it public, but I decided to go electronic free for that time. I'll be issuing a public apology for the entire debacle." Norman added.
"Unorthodox for sure, but I hope that everything will be business as usual," Fisk replied as he held out his hand to shake Norman's.
"I wouldn't say that, Wilson. Business will be far better than it was before." Norman smirked as he shook Wilson's hand before the large man left.
"Now that they're gone, I think we should start a new meeting. Wouldn't you all agree?" Norman questioned as he looked at the Delegator and the board members.
"Yes, Mr. Osborn, I do believe that we have much to talk about." The Delegator responded.
"Especially since you apparently decided to leave without telling everyone and wasting police time and giving us some bad press." The Delegator stated.
"I hope you understand that because of that, nothing will stop the company from going public." The Delegator added.
"Oh, don't worry. I know just what to do." Norman smirked as his eyes flashed yellow.
Norman Osborn's Office…
Spider-Man pushed the elevator doors open as he finally entered Norman Osborn's office after disabling the cameras. He slowly made his way around the room, looking for where Norman Osborn's computer was.
"Oh man, does he put his computer in his lab or something?" Spider-Man wondered as he approached Norman's desk and saw a lone mouse and keyboard mat.
"What the…?" Spider-Man questioned as he tapped the mat. When he did, a holographic screen appeared, displaying a password lock.
"Okay, I need Jett for this." Spider-Man sighed as he called Jett.
"Hey, so do you have a plan for tonight?" Jett inquired.
"Yeah, about that, I'm uh…already in Norman Osborn's office," Spider-Man revealed.
"WHAT?! But the sun hasn't set yet! What are you thinking?" Jett questioned.
"I didn't have a choice, okay! Someone already broke into Oscorp through the sewers, and I'm pretty sure it had to be Green Goblin." Spider-Man began.
"I haven't seen him, but the fight that occurred definitely fit his powers. Everyone hasn't noticed yet, but if I waited till tonight, it would be too late." Spider-Man explained.
"Okay, let's make this quick, then Sara will be home any minute," Jett replied.
"Are you at his computer?" Jett inquired.
"Yeah, it's some weird holographic monitor. You'd like it, but it's protected by a password." Spider-Man answered.
"That makes sense, and unfortunately, guessing the password wouldn't help you," Jett replied.
"And I can't guide you in unlocking it, so you're going to have to remove the hard drive," Jett explained.
"Alright, let me see if I can find the tower or where the components are," Spider-Man said as he inspected the desk.
Eventually, he found the tower inside the side of the desk. He tore off the side and carefully began to remove the wires on the hard drive. But as he did so, he noticed the elevator began to move, meaning someone was coming.
Spider-Man quickened his pace as he got the last wire off. He began taking the hard drive out when the elevator doors began to open. Not wanting to be seen, he tore out the hard drive and closed the panel where the tower was.
He jumped to the ceiling as the door opened, revealing the elevator to be completely empty. Confused, Spider-Man jumped down and slowly approached the elevator. When he determined that it was empty, he made sure he didn't damage the hard drive.
"Are you okay, Jay? You went quiet?" Jett asked.
"Yeah, the elevator came up, and I had to hide, but thankfully it was a false alarm," Spider-Man responded as he cleaned up his small mess.
"I've got the hard drive, so I'm going to get out of here and meet up with you to…." Spider-Man began until his spider-sense went off.
Spider-Man jumped over the desk as Maya dropped down from above, slicing at him with a golden knife. Seeing as he was found, he kicked the desk sending it flying towards Maya, who jumped over and used it to propel herself towards Spider-Man.
"What the hell is going on?" Jett questioned, having heard the fight.
"I'll have to call you back," Spider-Man replied as he hung up and jumped to the wall.
"Okay, I don't know who you are, but I don't really have time for this," Spider-Man stated as he webbed up Maya's hand that held the knife.
"Don't be like that, Spider. The fun's just starting." Maya smirked as she tore off the webbing with ease, surprising Spider-Man.
She then jumped onto a bookshelf, using it to jump up to Spider-Man and stab at him. Believing that the knife was no harm to him, he didn't even dodge as he kicked at Maya's head. But to his surprise, the blade cut through his skin, forcing Spider-Man to pull back to avoid behind stabbed.
Maya landed on the ground as Spider-Man looked at the cut he had received. Thankfully it wasn't deep, but whatever the blade was made of was able to cut him. He looked at the hard drive in his hand and back at Maya, knowing he needed to end this quickly.
"I can't let the hard drive get damaged." Spider-Man thought as he webbed it to the wall.
"I'm going to end this quick!" Spider-Man shouted as he dove down at Maya.
"Oh please, let's see you try." Maya chuckled as she easily dodged Spider-Man, who landed on the ground.
The girl spun around and kicked Spider-Man in the chest, knocking him back before running up and clocking him in the chin. She then sliced the blade at his chest, but Spider-Man grabbed her arm and tossed her behind him.
It did not deter Maya as she easily landed and swept Spider-Man's legs from under him, knocking him to the ground. Spider-Man rolled over to avoid her next attack before kicking Maya into the large window in the office.
The window broke open, but Maya managed to toss a grapple to keep herself in the office. Unfortunately, because the window was broken, the alarm went off, alerting the entire building of their presence.
"Oh great, now not only do I have to deal with you, but now every guard in the building is going to come here!" Spider-Man shouted.
"Just who are you?" Spider-Man questioned.
"That's not too important, Spider. But since you're so curious, call me Savage as we're not on a first-name basis." Maya responded.
She spun her knife in her hand before tossing it at Spider-Man, who ducked to dodge the blade only for his spider-sense to warn him of Maya's next attack. He flipped onto his hands, getting away from her ax kick, but when he got back to his feet, he wasn't ready to dodge her next kick.
Maya landed a kick into Spider-Man's face knocking him back, allowing her to land several consecutive punches on Spider-Man's face and gut. She finished her by jumping up and locking her legs around Spider-Man's neck, allowing her to throw him to the ground.
"Shit, even though she isn't as strong as me, she's kicking my ass!" Spider-Man cursed as he got to his feet.
"Is this really all you have? I came all the way here for a little challenge." Maya questioned as the elevator began to move.
"I'll show you what I can do!" Spider-Man replied as he jumped up and retrieved the hard drive.
As he did, Maya picked up her knife and tossed it back at Spider-Man, who flipped over the blade and shot a web behind Maya. He zipped straight into the girl kicking her out of the window, sending both out the window.
Not wanting to kill the girl Spider-Man went to fire a web at her, but she had gotten a rope around his arm. She pulled him in and pinned his arms together as she used him as a cushion for their fall onto the roof of an adjacent building.
The roof cracked when Spider-Man hit it, knocking the wind out of his and causing him to drop the hard drive. Maya, on the other hand, was perfectly fine as she dusted herself off and picked up the hard drive.
"You risked a lot for something so trivial. Plus, you were amateur about it." Maya commented as she inspected the hard drive.
"Give that to me!" Spider-Man demanded as he jumped at Maya.
Maya easily moved out of the way, avoiding Spider-Man's attack, but when Spider-Man landed on his hands, he lifted one up and shot a web at Maya's feet. The web hit her foot, allowing him to pull her down, knocking Maya to her back.
Jumping up, Spider-Man webbed Maya's arms and legs, allowing him to retrieve the hard drive from her grasp. But just as he retrieved the hard drive, Maya broke free from her bonds, shocking Spider-Man once more.
"How are you doing that? My webbing should be able to hold even most people with super strength?!" Spider-Man questioned.
"Oh, I have my ways," Maya smirked as her arms and legs glowed slightly blue but was covered by her clothing.
"Let's just say my genes are good." Maya chuckled as she ran towards Spider-Man.
Spidey focused on dodging her attacks as the girl swiftly, but she managed to get a few good hits in. Each punch was different from her previous attacks as they had an extra force to them. It was as if she was sending ripples throughout Spider-Man's body.
Said ripples would cause more pain than the initial punch, but it wasn't anything he couldn't endure. That being said, he had to attack back, but Spidey could tell that he lacked combat experience in comparison.
Maya had him beat in nearly everything, but strength and even that wasn't helping him much. But Spider-Man wasn't going to let that stop him. He just had to wait for the perfect moment. And that moment soon arrived as he managed to grab onto Maya's arm.
Spider-Man kneed her in the gut before throwing her away. He then fired a web at her and using it to swing her to the ground. The impact of the attack sent Maya through the roof, and while Spider-Man didn't really want to hurt a girl, he had to make the exception.
"Time to go," Spider-Man muttered as he swung off. As he swung away, Maya crawled out of the hole, rubbing her head.
"Alright. That was pretty good." Maya chuckled.
"But I'm not done with you yet. The night's still young." Maya stated as she followed to where Spider-Man swung off to.
As the wall-crawling hero swung home, police began to drive towards Oscorp underneath him. Thankfully he had turned the cameras off, so hopefully, no one could attempt to place any blame on him.
"Then again, who knows who was watching. Since Eddie Brock managed to get footage of me fighting with Uncle Curt and Green Goblin, I can't be too careful." Spider-Man thought.
Just then, his spider-sense went off as a shuriken cut his web, causing him to fall. He managed to fire another web just in time to make it to a nearby building's wall. Spider-Man crawled up to the roof in time to see Maya land in front of him.
"Please don't tell me you're some kind of stalker because I've heard stories about that stuff, and it's not pretty." Spider-Man sighed.
"Don't flatter yourself. I'm just here to have fun." Maya replied.
"I don't see attacking superheroes as being fun." Spider-Man quipped.
"Who named you a superhero?" Maya smirked as she pulled out a new knife.
She ran up to him and sliced at him with the knife, which Spider-Man managed to dodge. He then blocked Maya's next attack by stopping her swing then firing a web at her mask. Maya held her hand in front of her face stopping the web before smacking Spidey in the head.
Spinning around, Maya kicked him towards the edge of the roof, knocking the hard drive out of his hand. Spider-Man managed to catch it just before it fell and rolled over to avoid Maya's next attack.
Firing a web, he pulled her into a kick of his own before he punched her across the face. Maya grabbed onto Spidey's arm, and it used it to take Spider-Man down to the ground pinning him there. It didn't last long as Spider-Man lifted her off of him.
Spider-Man tossed her off before getting back onto his feet. Placing the hard drive somewhere safe, he spun around and fired a web. Maya managed to dodge the web, but Spider-Man used it to launch him forward and kick her into the adjacent office building.
"You're a little better than I thought you were, Spider. That's good because it makes this much more fun." Maya smirked as she rolled onto her feet.
"I like that in a man." Maya teased.
"Wow, I don't know if I should be flattered or weirded out. So I'm just going to go with the latter." Spider-Man replied as he landed on a pillar.
He jumped up, avoiding shuriken thrown by Maya before firing a web down at the girl. Unfortunately, he missed as Maya easily moved out of the way. Spider-Man jumped off the ceiling towards Maya, but before he could tackle her, she spun with knife in hand.
This forced him to dive down into a roll to avoid the blade before kicking Maya's legs out. Acting quickly, he grabbed onto the falling girl's arm and knocked the blade out of her hand. Maya responded by nailing Spidey in the shoulder, causing cascading ripples of pain.
It was enough to loosen Spider-Man's grip on her allowing her to headbutt the hero before landing a strike to his gut. Spidey fell back as Maya spun around and kicked him into a desk knocking both him and it over.
Maya jumped up to throw more shuriken at Spider-Man, but she was taken aback when Spider-Man stuck his feet onto the desk and tossed it into the girl. The large desk knocked Maya into a pillar, cracking the foundation as she fell back down.
"Damn, why does every punch you make sting so much?" Spider-Man sighed as he got back up and slowly approached Maya, who was collapsed on the floor.
"Is she knocked out?" Spider-Man wondered as he inched closer only to stop when his spider-sense went off. He jumped back just in time to avoid Maya's sneak attack on him.
"It seems I can never effectively sneak up on you, can I?" Maya questioned as she easily got up.
"I can sense danger from a mile away." Spider-Man quipped.
"And I can fly." Maya scoffed as she ran towards Spider-Man.
But Spider-Man was done with this game she was playing as he fired two strands of web at the girl, who jumped up to avoid it. She kicked at his head, but Spider-Man was able to grab onto her leg and tossed her across the office.
He ran quickly to the broken window jumping out to the roof he was just on a minute earlier, and went to retrieve the hard drive. But he didn't get far as one of his legs was wrapped by a weighted rope tripping him.
Maya descended from the office building as Spider-Man recovered. However, she kicked him back down and pinned him on his back. She stopped him from tossing her off by using her powers to send another cascade of pain throughout his body.
"You know there's something I've been curious about all day. Let's see what's behind the mask." Maya smirked as she grabbed onto Spider-Man's mask.
Spider-Man grabbed onto her arm as the pain subsided, keeping her from taking his mask as he grabbed at her with his free hand. He missed her as she punched his gut and jumped off, taking his mask with her.
"Wow. Honestly, not what I was expecting. I think I like you better with the mask." Maya chuckled as Jay got to his feet, holding his head.
"Well, that makes to of us," Jay replied as he held up Maya's own mask, surprising the girl.
"How did you…?" Maya questioned until Jay interrupted.
"Sticky fingers." Jay teased.
"So how about a trade. Give me my mask back, and I'll give you yours." Jay offered as Maya crossed her arms and tapped her foot.
"Nah. I got way more where that came from. Plus, this way, I'll have something to remind me of our little fight." Maya declined as she backed up to the roof's edge.
"Till next time Spider." Maya winked as she jumped off. Jay ran towards her as a loud boom was heard, and Maya disappeared.
"Ah, man." Jay sighed as he looked at Maya's mask.
"Who the hell was she?" Jay wondered as he went to call Jett.
"Shit, the receiver was in the mask." Jay cursed as he walked over to the hard drive.
"At least I have the hard drive." Jay sighed as he pulled his hood up and swung off to home.
Oscorp…
"It seems that whoever had broken in didn't take anything, Mr. Osborn, and it seems that the culprit shut off the cameras." A Guard explained as Norman Osborn entered his office.
"The culprit also engaged Spider-Man in a fight that took them away from here, but we managed to find this." The Guard added as he handed Norman a golden knife.
"I see. To think that tragedy had to strike on my return. Not only was Oscorp broken into, but the board members were killed." Norman pouted.
"No doubt by the same culprit," Norman stated as his eyes flashed yellow.
"The police have arrived and will want statements from you, sir, and we're keeping the reporters back, but Gorden Godfrey is making a scene." The Guard replied.
"Very well, I'll address them both," Norman said as he headed for his elevator.
"Everything is just as planned," Norman smirked as the elevator doors closed.
Curt Conners Home…
"So this girl just attacked you and stole your mask?" Jett questioned.
"Yeah. Sadly she saw my face, but I also saw hers." Jay responded as he held up Maya's mask.
"I still don't understand what it was she really wanted." Jay sighed.
"Well, let's hope she doesn't find out who you are. I think I'll be able to make another mask without Sara knowing." Jett replied.
"How's she doing?" Jay asked.
"She was tired and barely said anything when she got home. Thankfully she's sleeping right now." Jett answered.
"That's good. Meet me at my house tomorrow, and we'll see if we can get anything useful from the hard drive." Jay requested.
"Sure thing. See you tomorrow." Jett replied as he hung up.
"Now, what to do with this?" Jay sighed as he looked at Maya's mask.
"Guess it makes a good souvenir," Jay murmured as he tossed it on his desk and went to sleep.
Warworld…
"The mask is a bit stuffy. But then again, it wasn't made for me." Maya noted as she tried on Spider-Man's mask.
She took it off and placed it on a mannequin head she had that displayed more stolen items she kept. Normally she returned most items she stole as she only wanted the challenge but the greater ones she liked to keep as reminders.
Spider-Man was far more interesting than she originally thought, and while his fighting skill isn't much, he still has his own methods of fighting. It was very entertaining, and it gave her the rush she wanted, so keeping his mask was just the thing she wanted to remember the fight.
"Let's hope the next one will be even more entertaining," Maya smirked.
"Maya," Cassandra called as she entered her sister's quarters.
"What is it, Cassandra?" Maya questioned.
"Father wishes to speak to us," Cassandra answered as Maya nodded and followed.
Chrysler Building…
"So Norman was alive the whole time." Kingpin muttered as he looked out the window of his office.
"Well then, we'll see if he's even necessary anymore." Kingpin sighed as he turned around.
"For now, I hope I can rely on you to solve my little arachnid problem, Mr. Gargan." Kingpin smirked as he looked at the man in front of him.
"Of course, boss. How could I pass up on this opportunity." Gargan replied.
"Good because Tinkerer worked long and hard on your suit. Soon you will kill Spider-Man as the Scorpion." Kingpin declared as he pressed a button on his desk.
A small circular hole opened up to his right and from it rose the scorpion suit Tinkerer was working on. It was green with lime highlights and was fully armored with a long tail. Everything in the suit was designed to make the wearer stronger and more deadly.
"This is amazing, boss," Gargan commented as he slid his hand across the suit.
"Glad you like it because you'll be wearing it for a while to get used to the power it gives you." Kingpin replied.
Author's Note:
Another chapter done faster than I anticipated, honestly. But it came out pretty good, in my opinion, as this chapter was focused on no one villain and just Jay fighting Maya Savage, my OC daughter of Vandal Savage.
Their fight showed the great lack of fighting experience and skill that Jay has, and even though Maya isn't as strong as him, she easily kept up. Maya could have done far more damage, but she was testing the waters to have fun. Also, yes, she is a metahuman.
She will return as she will be very important to the story going forward, but that will take some time. For now, Jay only has to worry about the new threats coming his way, most notably at the moment Scorpion.
But that's not all that happened as Green Goblin has reverted back to Norman. He's quickly come up with a cover and killed his board members. Originally I was going to have him kill them, much like how it happened in the first Rami film, but I decided against it.
I'm going to save Norman's full Green Goblin reveal for later. Also, before anyone asks, he has split personalities, with Green Goblin being the dominant one. Either way, he's going to be making many moves now.
The Team now are also restricted from going to New York since Jay has caused the city to be more observant. This means that if The Team is found, like said before would cause lots of trouble for the league due to Lex Luthor and the UN.
So I felt it appropriate that for now, they will avoid going to New York again. At least not those who aren't adept at stealth. Anyway, one little development is the hate that Black Spider has for Jay, as yeah, I wouldn't doubt the guy would be butt-hurt, lol.
He and Jay will clash soon enough, but for now, he'll have to sit and wait. That's all I have for today so let's get to the reviews:
Kevin06x – Glad to hear that you liked the combat, and I hope you liked the fight in this chapter as well. While Doc Ock is coming very soon, the creation of the Sinister Six will have to wait for a little while as not all the villains have appeared yet.
Yeah, Jay definitely hasn't experienced enough to fight six villains yet, so it'll take some time before he's ready for that. When he does meet The Team, it will be interesting for sure.
The fight in the school and the sewers were both nods to the Amazing Spider-Man movie, but I wanted to change it up so as to not completely rip the scenes from the movie. Which is why he didn't wrap up Lizard in a cocoon. Well, that and he isn't experienced enough to know how.
Curt did survive as if he didn't well, then there would be no one to take care of Jay. Though the issue with the webs underwater can't really be solved by Jett as it is an issue with the webs materials.
I don't think there is a version of Spider-Man who has webs that work underwater, but I could be wrong. Who knows. As for Electro, well, he isn't showing up for a while, so who knows, maybe he may fry the web-shooters.
Yeah, I will try to keep Goblin a bit more like the comics with a splash of Rami as I feel that he was more tactical there. But then again, I may be biased about that since I grew up with that film and just might think that.
Though yeah, I am not touching anything about the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Still don't know what the hell they were thinking with that movie. But yeah, Goblin is strong like the Ultimate comics but crazy like mainstream, so it'll be fun writing future interactions.
Sorry, the dialogue doesn't work for you. Hopefully, I can make it work better in the future. I know that during fights, I am pretty bad at timing certain dialogue, which could bring people out of the action, so hopefully, I'll get better as I write the story.
Glad you liked the chapter.
jjjdunk1 – Thanks, I'm glad to hear you like it. I was definitely aiming for a more realistic and original Spider-Man story which is one of the reasons I made my main character an OC and not Peter Parker.
This way, I can make several original storylines for him easier and make it very interesting to read. Hope you enjoyed this chapter too.
That's all for today. See you guys next time!
