Attack on Titan: Explanation
A/N: There's always a reason behind everything.
"…All I understand is what I saw back there," Sasha explained to Eren and Mikasa as they walked across the deck of the old ship. "There was a guy in yellow with something coming out of his hand, another guy that froze my gun and snapped it! And then there's a guy, who, as far as I can understand, is able to turn into electricity. How did any of them just…do what they did back there?"
"There's a reason why we're here," Mikasa told them, "and as for the electrical guy, he's spoken about in myths and legends. Supposedly, he's called Lord Rayden, the god of thunder and a protector of the Earth."
"He didn't look like a god," went Eren.
"Most gods don't have to look like they're divine or royal or anything like that, Eren. They just have to be known for their divinity."
"I still don't understand what any of this has to do with any of us," Sasha expressed. "And where is he, anyway?"
"Listen," they heard his voice and saw him sitting on a crate, looking at them. "What you're going to face in due time is vastly more important than…feeding one's ego, finding your enemy…or some quest for revenge. You three have been chosen to embark on a sacred mission to defend the realm of Earth…in a tournament known as Mortal Kombat."
"Mortal Kombat?" Mikasa asked. "Defend Earth from who, exactly?"
"You see, your world is but one of many realms, many planes of existence…and one of these realms is a forsaken land called Outworld, ruled by an immortal whose brutal appetite for power and domination knows no bounds. He serves as the emperor of Outworld, and now he seeks a new world to conquer and enslave."
"And he wants Earth?" Sasha questions. "If this guy is so powerful, then why doesn't he just take the planet? Why doesn't he send an army of soldiers or monsters after us?"
"Because of the rules and regulations that bind us all. In order to lay claim to your world, the emperor's demonic sorcerer, Shang Tsung, and his fighters have to win ten consecutive victories in Mortal Kombat. Heh-heh. So far, they have won nine. This will be the tenth tournament, and if they win, it will be the last Mortal Kombat the planet will ever experience."
"So, basically, a handful of people on an old boat are gonna be the ones to save the world?" Eren asks him.
"Exactly," Rayden tells them, getting up from off the crate. "The essence of Mortal Kombat…isn't death…but life and its preservation at the hands of the likes of those involved. Mortal men and women defending your own world and the lives within it."
"Why are telling us about this?" Mikasa asked him. "I mean, what about the others aboard? Shouldn't they be informed about this?"
"They're all great fighters. The best of their generation. But I've looked into their souls…and yours. One of you three will be the one who decides the outcome of the tournament. The fate of everyone will be in your hands. Heh-heh-heh. Sorry."
"Well, that's just lovely," Sasha responds to learning this.
"This Shang Tsung," went Eren, "is he the reason why my father and half-brother were killed?"
Rayden looked at him and responded, "Still committed to vengeance, are you? He may have had a hand in the deaths of any with the dragon marking, but if you were to face him now, you would end up losing your life and your soul to him."
"I just want to find the one responsible and bring them to justice."
"Justice comes to those that demonstrate patience and restraint."
Suddenly, the night sky lit up with strange lights.
"Look," Rayden uttered as the three looked up. "Those lights means we're halfway to where we're heading. It has begun."
The lights in the sky assumed various shapes, like serpents and skulls. They were creepy…but also mesmerizing to the senses.
Meanwhile, Shang Tsung, also on the deck, looked up at the lights in the sky and had his arms raised, which glowed with a strange energy.
"It has begun!" He shouts.
Nobody else looking up at the sky was able to understand or even comprehend what was happening right this moment, only that it was happening. It was happening, it was haunting…and at the same time…beautiful.

A/N: In many respects, Eren, Mikasa and Sasha in this story are Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, respectively, but in other ways, their characters rotate in small ways. There's more to come in the future.
