Mal, Jay, Evie and Carlos were walking over to Quincy's and Chad's dorm to talk with Quincy about going out with them.
"Are you sure we can get him to come with us?" Evie said.
"Of course! He would be a beast at Whack-A-Lucifer!" Jay said.
"I'm sure he has some anger pent up that he wants to let out." Carlos said.
"No kidding. He's been so busy lately, he has to be frustrated by now." Mal said. "But let's check on him before we ask."
They got to the door and Mal begin knocking on it.
"Quincy!" Mal said. "It's Mal! Are you there?"
Just then, the door opens and it was Chad that answered.
"You might not want to disturb him." He whispered.
"Why's that?" Mal asked.
"See for yourself." Chad lets them in and steps aside.
They all go in and and they were not prepared for what they've seen. There was paper and cutout from magazines all over the place. Different pictures of hairstyles and around 4-5 names on each of them. There was even a clipboard of a piece of paper with names, times and dates on it. Tools were not in proper places, the big mirror has splotches and there was an open energy drink.
They spotted a certain redhead with his back turned to them, and Jay walks up slowly to him.
"Hey. Q?" Jay said,
He tries to touch his shoulder but when he did, Quincy turns around and screams.
"AAHHH!" He yelled.
"AAHHH!" The four friends shouted.
"I warned you." Chad said.
Quincy was bug-eyed, hair sticking out, and he was panting like crazy.
"Woah, Quincy, it's us!" Jay said.
Quincy blinks and they it's clear to him. "Oh, hey guys." He also rubs his eyes.
"You ok, buddy?" Jay asked.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" Quincy said, but one of his eyes was twitching.
Carlos then takes over and walks over to Quincy. "We just came by to see if you want to go to the arcade downtown with us."
"Hmm, I don't think I have time for that." Quincy shakes his head. "I'm much too busy."
"We can see that." Evie said with a nervous chuckle.
"What is all this?" Mal picks up one of the magazine cutouts.
"Oh, some of the girls want a certain hairstyle, so I tagged their names so I'll remember. I even did the same with other clients." Quincy explained.
Mal picks up the what she can make out is the check in list. "Quincy, it says you have booked appointments all today, Sunday, and even almost all your free time through the whole next week."
"For real?" Evie said as she wanted to look, which Mal allowed. "Quincy, this is too much, even for you."
"Why did you take so many appointments?" Carlos asked.
Quincy sighs, "I…just couldn't say no. Or I don't know how to say no."
"What?" They said in shock.
"I know, it sounds crazy. I'm usually the guy that doesn't take no for an answer, but now since doing this business, I just can't say it. I guess I just want people to know that I'm not like…my mom. I don't want them to be scared of me. I wanted them to trust me."
Everyone has this sad look on their faces cause they get he feels this way.
"We had no idea you felt that way." Mal said.
"Quincy, we understand, but this can't be the way to go on about this." Jay said.
"I don't really see the problem, I got my energy drinks, so I won't be that tired." Quincy held up his drink to show them.
"I don't think this stuff is good for you. Even energy drinks has their limits." Carlos said.
"I tried to tell him that, but he's stubborn." Chad said.
"Guys, I'm fine. This is nothing I can't handle on my own. I used to pull pranks on everyone back on the isle, which took lots of effort. It's a piece of cake." Quincy said,
"This is in no way healthy for your mental state." Evie said.
"Agreed, you got to take a step back, cause eventually, it won't be just from those drinks you'll be crashed by. Taking on too many things at once will put you over the edge." Mal added.
"I can do this on my own! I'm not some damsel in distress who doesn't know what he's doing." Quincy argued.
"We're not saying that." Mal said with her hands up.
"We're just saying that you shouldn't let work consume your life." Evie said. "Believe me, I would know."
"You should at least get someone to help you, maybe an assistant who can sort out your time." Carlos said.
"I can't trust anyone with what I need. Not even him!" Quincy pointed out to Chad.
"I really could help."
"You say you would, but next thing I know, you'd probably try to flirt with 10 of my clients." Quincy accused.
"I feel attacked." Chad hold his hand to his chest. "I would never."
"Don't lie to yourself, Chad." Evie said as they all looked at him.
"Well, not 10, that's for sure. Maybe 3 at a time, but…" Chad trails off.
Quincy threw his hands up then down in frustration. "See what I'm talking about?" He says to the Core 4.
"Ok, we're definitely not suggesting Chad, but everyone else are better options." Jay said.
"Yeah, I don't know about that. You see, I like have things a certain way and I'm not sure anyone's gonna get that about me." Quincy said.
"You won't know until you try." Mal said.
"Ugh, this is too much! I can't think straight!" Quincy holds his head as he feels a headache pounding him. "I need some air!"
He storms out, leaving his friends behind in his room, with them all having sad looks on their faces.
"So…I'm guessing he doesn't want to whack a Lucifer." Jay said.
Mal, Evie and Carlos looked at Jay with annoyed stares.
Student Lounge
Quincy needed a place to relax and think, so he marches until he finds the Student Lounge and goes sulk on his favorite bean bag chair. He lays face front with his arms around it and lets the rest of his body slump on the floor. He was so frustrated, he hits the bean bag chair with his right fist. He hasn't felt this rage in a good while now. He was so used to how things were since coming to Auradon that being angry was the last thing on his mind. But now that's changed, at least part of it. Now it feels like he's slipping back into his previous impulses.
As Quincy was down in the dumps, another student walks in and sees Quincy's distress. The student got closer to him and taps on his shoulder.
"What?!" Quincy turned and shouted. He then changes his demeanor when he sees who startled him. "Oh, Pin!"
Pin was holding his heart at Quincy's outburst, feeling like it stopped. Quincy straightened up and tried to apologize. "I'm sorry, I was just in a mood."
"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I just saw you and wanted to see if you're ok." Pin said.
Pin was one of the first students who Quincy got along with. They're often pair up in homework assignments as Quincy was struggling and he would ask Pin for help. Being a genius when it comes to computers, Pin was happy to help and they formed a friendship. They often play online games and would beat each other in whatever role-playing game they come across. Sometimes, Quincy suggested to play cards, something he picks up from his mother. They even let Freddie play with them when she has some time. Pin was like the little brother Quincy never had and he was grateful to have Pin in his life.
"I'm just…taking a breather." Quincy said.
"With your salon?"
"Yeah."
"I know what'll make you feel better." Pin brought out some of his cards.
Quincy gave him a small smile. Playing cards with Pin helps relax him and sometimes he can think better, which helps him in so many ways.
"You know me too well."
30 minutes later…
Quincy and Pin are now on one of the 3 tables in the Student Lounge with 2 decks of cards facing down. They're playing Quincy's favorite card game, War! His mother, The Queen of Hearts, used to teach him how to play card games when he was little. Surprisingly, it was one of the very few things that Quincy loved doing with his mom. And now he's gotten good at them, though he still experiences loses but he knows that's part of the game and in life. Right now, he's not sure if he's losing in the game or in life.
"That's gotta be tough, running a business and being in school? You seemed so chill, it was like nothing can phase you." Pin said as he flips over a card with a 7 facing up.
"I guess I was…putting on a face. I haven't needed to before, but lately, it's becoming too much." Quincy said while flipping over a card with a 6 facing up.
"Maybe you're taking on too much without realizing it." Pin suggested while taking both the cards and putting it in his pile.
Quincy scoffs at his lost round. "That's what everyone's telling me." Quincy then gets a sad look. "And they're right." Quincy flips a card from his deck, revealing a 9.
"But…?" Pin flips his card, showing a 9 also.
Quincy sighs, "It's just…I wanted everyone to know that they can trust me and to create the hairstyles they dream of. To make them feel like their the stars of their own movie. Or music video, whichever they prefer. Even if it takes all my time and energy, I'll gladly sacrifice it." Quincy puts down another card facing down.
"Quincy. I understand that, believe me. Sometimes I have people thinking I only know about puppets because my grandpa owns a shop of them and my dad was litterally a puppet before the Blue Fairy came into their lives. But I proved them wrong when I discovered my passion for computers, video games and some filmmaking. They would even ask me for help with computers and I always said yes. At least, that used to be the case." Pin pulls another card and faces it down also.
"What happened?"
"I was helping so many computer problems that I haven't even had time to finish my homework, have decent meals, more importantly, time for myself. Then eventually, it's gotten to the point when was so tired that I accidentally caused a blackout in the entire school." Pin got another card which shows a 3.
"Woah." Quincy said shockingly as he pulls out and shows a card with a 3 also.
"That was the day I learned a loose grip with soda and exposed wires do not mix." Pin said.
"I can't imagine you going through that."
"It shocked me too, no pun intended. But thankfully, I had some help and they gave me the same talk in giving you."
"How'd that go?" Quincy faces down another card.
"Basically, I learned not to solve every problem in one day and there were other experts they can help everyone. I still help, but not as much as I used to and they still respected me." Pin faces down another of his cards.
Quincy paused and stared down at his cards. "So they never got mad at you when you said no to some of them?"
"Not really, but even so, who cares? If you can't fit it in your schedule, then that's their problem, not yours. It's ok to say no once in a while. They won't hold it against you, so you'll be fine." Pin pulls a 10 from his deck.
From his point of view, Quincy immediately thought he was gonna lose this game and he would need a miracle to win, though he might be also thinking about having a miracle in his situation. As he pulls another card from his deck, he didn't even look and he set the card on his pile. Before he can look, he heard his name being called out.
"Quincy!"
Quincy looks behind to see Jordan, Jane, Ally, Arabella, Emeri and other girls behind him.
"Jordan? What are all you guys doing here?" He asked.
"Did you book all of us without caring about your own time?" Jordan asked.
"How did you…"
"We've heard that you were taking all of our appointments, with no time for yourself." Jane said.
"Now Quincy, we don't expect to you to tire yourself just for us. That's more bonkers than riding a bottle in a sea of tears!" Ally said.
"We know you're a great hairdresser, you don't need to prove anything else." Emeri said.
"It's ok to think about yourself every once in a while. You're mental health comes first or did you forget about our talk a while back?" Jordan said.
Quincy just stares at them before getting up from his chair. "I…I just didn't know how to say I can't do your hair right now. I didn't want to make you mad. And I didn't want to be mad at you either. There was just so much at stake and I can just feel my old tendencies coming back. I didn't want to anyone to hate me. Being in Auradon gave me purpose and…I just didn't want that to be taken from me." A tear came out from his left eye and the girls noticed.
Jordan went to hug Quincy, who hugs her back. The other girls were in awe as they watch the two friends embrace each other.
"You're never hated. We all love you. You have more heart than you think. You're nothing like your mother." Jordan said in Quincy's ear.
Ally, Jane, Emeri and Arabella joins in on the group hug. The rest of the girls smiled and cried at the sight.
As they all let go, Jordan says, "I moved my appointment to next week, I can manage for the time being."
"I cancelled my appointment, I have a lot of homework to do anyways." Arabella said.
"I moved my time to 4 hours later." Ally said.
"Even some of the other girls either changed or canceled their appointments. All for the sake of you!" Jane said.
"You really did that?" Quincy said.
"Yeah, you assistant did it for us. I told you it was a good idea, didn't I?" Jordan smiled.
Quincy was dumbfounded cause he never hired an assistant before today, so he went along with it. "Yeah, you did."
"I'm so happy to hear that." Jordan said then notices the card. "Well, looks like we interrupted your game. We should get going, don't want disturb anymore of you 'me' time!"
The girls all walked out, but Jane stayed behind to tell him, "I know our appointment is in 30 mins, but I can wait for an hour or 2."
"Jane, you're sweet, but I'll wrap up soon." Quincy said.
"I mean it, I can wait. I decided to have lunch with Carlos anyways."
Quincy smiles at her. "Ok, Jane, if you insist. Text me to let me know when your ready."
"You got it!"
Jane leaves the Student Lounge, so Quincy turns around to sit in his chair. "That was weird, but also a relief."
"Feeling better?" Pin asked.
"Like a weight was lifted off my chest. Except for one thing. How can I have an assistant when I haven't even been looking for one?" Quincy wondered.
"Maybe because he knows how much you're struggling, especially after talking to Chad, Mal and her crew?" Pin suggested.
"But how would he even…" Quincy's eyes went wide with realization, then looks at Pin who has a look of guilt on his face. "It was you, wasn't it?"
"Surprise." Pin chuckled.
"Pin, since when did I make you my assistant? And why?"
"You never did. I went to your dorm room because you left your notebook the last time we hung out and I wanted to return it, but then I overheard your conversation with Chad and the rest and felt bad. I talked with them after you left and I made them give me your list of clients. That when when I contacted them and told them your deal. They felt bad and wanted to make it up to you for all the hair makeovers you've given them. They don't want to burn you out, they want you to succeed."
"You did all this for me?" Quincy said.
"Of course I did. You're one of my good friends and an awesome game rival, which would explain the why. I miss my gaming buddy. We haven't played anything with each other in what feels like forever." Pin explained.
"I don't know what to say. How can I thank you?" Quincy asked.
"You can start by looking at your last card." Pin smirked.
Quincy looks down to see what he meant. He was in shock as he saw what he placed down. A Joker.
"Oh my Zeus!" Quincy said.
"Looks like things are looking up." Pin said.
"That's one way to put it." Quincy said.
"Wanna go another round?" Pin asked.
"You sure you wanna lose again?"
"That stung! I'm offended! How do you know I didn't let you win?" Pin smirked.
"Only one way to find out."
"You're on!"
Quincy picks up all the cards and shuffles each one from himself to Pin to get ready for another game of War. At the same time, he was thrilled that he finally got the assistant he's been waiting for. Someone he can put his trust in, who was also a dear friend to him. With him on his side, he has nothing to fear.
