Chapter 137
Labor Day at the ranch was always interesting. A Federal holiday, most businesses were closed or depending on the business at least maintained special hours. Sally and Erma fit this category, where they'd ordinarily have their stands open all day on a day where most people weren't working and were planning the ubiquitous American bar-b-que, the stands were open until noon with signs saying this very thing up for a week prior. If you wanted anything, come early and just like at Pegasus you couldn't simply ignore the livestock.
As with the farms but more so, the ranch was different in that no matter the day there were hundreds of creatures at Pegasus that needed seeing to. Feeding, mucking, exercise and the rest all still needed to be cared for. Over the years Bryce had developed an unofficial set of guidelines that seemed to work, spend part of your day seeing to the animals and go away. As it grew many of the hands showed up with their families who mounted up and rode off, they exercised the livestock, brushed them down after, fed and cared for them and spent time with their families.
Fishing was also popular, so popular that you actually had to sign up for a Labor Day spot, the only concession being that the 'family' got to fish first which basically meant you can fish upriver early on, but the main landing was sacrosanct to the Fleming-Borden clan until at least this year when Ty had to leave for morning rounds at 9:30.
Amy opened her eyes when she felt Ty's soft kiss on her forehead.
"Sorry Ames, I didn't mean to wake you, just heading out with the kids."
"It's fine, I have to get up anyway, you'll be back for rounds?"
"That's the plan, you?"
Amy smiled moving to the edge of the bed "Shower, dress, tea, porch, reading and the world will come by and visit, it's not a bad life actually. Go ahead my love, I'll be fine."
"I'll let Betty know you'll be down soon."
Amy nodded and moved to stand and Ty immediately put out his hand to lend her some support before they kissed again and he watched her head to the bathroom.
She was braiding her hair when the knock came "door's unlocked" she called out followed by Mallory popping her head in.
"How's it going?"
"Going great Mal, you?"
"Can't remember the last time Jake and I slept in on a Monday, ranch life and teaching are not exactly sleep-in occupations."
"I hear that." Amy said moving her head back and forth and using a handheld mirror to check the back of her head. "Ok then, hungry Mal?"
"Absolutely, Jake's downstairs probably wondering where I've gone off to."
Amy followed Mallory down the stairs where they found Betty and Jake sitting in front of coffees and chatting.
"Betty said she figured you'd stopped at Amy's room." Jake said as Mallory walked by after telling Amy she'd get her tea.
"Betty's wise." Amy said smiling and leaning over to kiss her cheek. "All good Gran?"
"So far, Ty and the kids got off ok, Lou went with them and I think Georgie went along too."
Mallory joined the group sliding Amy's mug across the table to her.
"Breakfast Amy? We have fresh bagels and a couple cream cheeses."
"Everything bagel and veggie cream cheese will be great Gran, anything important I have to think about?"
Betty shrugged "Nothing that comes to mind, how about you settle outside and I'll bring your bagel in a minute."
"Lead the way Amy, I've got your tea." Mallory said reaching out to take Amy's mug.
"Bagel for you too Mal?"
"Sounds great, thanks Betty, Jake, help her carry please."
They settled on the porch and chatted while watching the goings on that they could see. Since the parking with the best access to the barns was in the back, most people drove around through one of the ancillary entrances that would not take them past the main house.
It was still early for Labor Day so there weren't any horses out in the front meadows though there were probably more horses out on trail rides than Amy knew and more that would go out in the hours to come. She whole-heartedly approved of trail rides over pen exercise.
"Well, look who's here." Betty said making Amy look up from the Sunday paper she had saved for today to read. They both smiled as Charlie drove up in his Maserati and parked in front of the house next to the ever-present Jag.
"Morning Charlie!" Amy called out as he straightened up out of the car.
"Morning all." He called back as Chuck and Robin got out.
Once good mornings were settled amongst the group, Charlie and Robin headed inside for drinks and a refill for Amy while Chuck grabbed Jake to check on the barns and see what needed to be done.
"Well, this is a pleasant surprise." Amy said as Charlie and Robin settled on a bench.
"I almost had to tie Chuck down when I told him we have to wait for Charlie, and it was Ok to be a little late on Labor Day. I mean he was fine; he gets it, but boy was he antsy."
"Sorry Rob, I just figured…"
"Don't dad, it's fine, really, he did get it, it's just not his way. So, how's it going Amy?"
"You know about Wednesday?"
"Oh yeah, any minute, Georgie told me."
Amy nodded "My answer is I guess it's going Rob, waiting."
"You feeling Ok?"
"That's hard to answer, I mean I'm good for someone almost 36 weeks pregnant with twins."
"Makes sense to me." Charlie said, "Are you uncomfortable Amy?"
"I go back and forth, I think it's more mentally uncomfortable, I want to do things my body can't or shouldn't do, there's some discomfort but I can get around that. It's interesting having an approaching end."
"And what is that?"
She looked over and into Charlie's eyes and smiled "Both of you shouldn't worry, I'm not the first woman giving birth." She said to both Robin and Charlie.
"I know, still." Charlie said.
"I spoke with Miriam last night, she and Daniel and a consult all think that it's days. If I don't go into labor by Wednesday morning I'll check into a birthing suite and we'll see."
"What does that mean?" Robin asked.
"For Wednesday, they'll treat it like they tell you to do at home. Take walks, sit rather than lay and wait for a natural progression. The difference between home and hospital is they'll monitor the boys. I think by Thursday Miriam will do a physical which she guarantees will break my water and start labor and then we'll see and before you ask, we won't know what that means until it's happening."
"Identical twins, I did not have that on my scorecard."
"You and me both Charlie." Amy agreed. "Any news?"
"Got a line on an apartment on Central Park West, walkable to Juilliard. Be good for Brin for sure."
"Any details?"
"Pre-war building, 9 foot ceilings, in the 60's, doorman, available parking spot, parquet and tile floors, 2 bedroom, 2 refurbished bathrooms, one in the master suite, air conditioned, large living room slash dining room and a new kitchen. They're looking to list at the end of October but Trev knows a guy so he may be able to see it October 1 so we may get a shot before it's listed. The living room and both bedrooms look out over the park. Maintenance and dues are $2400 a month which covers utilities, the gym, other amenities."
Amy drifted for a second, shrugged and looked over at Mallory,"welcome to the family Mal, how much Charlie?"
"Trev thinks 2 million with the parking spot."
"Wow." Amy whispered "More than I thought, is that a good price these days? 2 million bucks and 15 grand a year in maintenance and dues. I'm glad we bought the townhouse, wow."
"Where is this?"
"Manhattan Mal."
"You have a townhouse in Manhattan?"
"Yup, off 5th avenue, down the block from the Central Park Zoo."
"So, what's the apartment for, investment?"
"Well, yes for now I guess."
"What does that mean, for now?"
"There's a very good chance Maddie and Brin will be living in Manhattan in a couple years. There's also a very good chance that this apartment will be 2.4 million or more in a couple of years, so it works both ways."
"Trev's friend, the agent says we can sign a closed end 2 or 3-year tenant for around 70 thousand a year plus the maintenance."
"So, not straight up break even."
"No, but in the grand investment scheme it is. I don't see a problem with it over the next few years at least to get them through school. Up or down with the tax write-offs would work for you."
Amy shrugged "no harm in looking I guess."
"That's for sure, besides, there's a second option."
"And what would that be Charlie?"
"You use the apartment and lease the townhouse."
"We can't all fit in the apartment."
"No but with the Adirondack house and no hospital stays the odds are that it'll be you and Ty heading into the city for an overnight or weekend alone more often than not. Keeping the house empty just for those times is wasteful, whereas the apartment is perfect, even has a second bedroom."
"Betty, any thoughts?"
"No harm in keeping an ear out. I agree about the townhouse though, I can't imagine choosing Manhattan over the Adirondacks for family time. It's not like there aren't an abundance of places to stay in Manhattan."
"And there you have it Charlie, keep it on the radar and I'll mention it to Ty. Anyone have plans for later?"
"Georgie's fishing with Ty and the kids, then rounds, lunch and a trail ride with us. I think Wyatt's still upstairs getting ahead on schoolwork."
"Sounds like fun Rob and you Charlie?"
"I have no plans so I think you're stuck with me."
"Excellent!" Betty exclaimed, "you can man the grill for lunch."
"My pleasure Betty, what are we having?"
"Burgers, sausages and salads for lunch and a Silo delivery for dinner."
"What's Silo?"
"Mostly fried chicken Mal, the best in Ithaca," Amy answered, "it's actually a food truck but you can place an order and they'll deliver if it's big enough."
"We've got to get out more." Mallory muttered.
"Summer goes by pretty quick Mal."
"I guess, settling in, the other house trips, Alberta."
"Sounds like a good summer to me."
"It was great Betty, I guess we'll learn the local stuff soon enough."
As always, the chat jumped from family to school, the foundation and friends with an undercurrent of gossip to make it interesting. Mallory fit right into this aspect of Pegasus life. They had a couple of stop overs and short visits as the morning went by. Mostly families going out for a ride walking or riding over for a quick hello and check-in. They watched the fishing crew ride back and wave. All dismounted and led their horses into the barn, Georgie stayed horseback and rode over to the porch.
"Hey Georgie, how was fishing?" Amy asked as Georgie rode up on Checkers.
"Nice, decent bite, how's everyone here, you feeling Ok?"
"We're all good I think, rounds?"
"As soon as I take care of this guy and change, where's lunch Rob?"
"You can all join us, we have plenty." Betty said.
She glanced at Robin who nodded "Ok then. I'll let Wyatt know and we'll see you all after rounds I guess. Mom and the kids should be along soon."
"See you after Georgie." Robin said with a wave. "I'll text Chuck and let him know about lunch."
It wasn't long before they heard Lou and the kids coming through the house from the back and Jackson popped through the front door and made a bee line for Amy.
"Hey mom, how's it going?"
"It's going fine my love and how was fishing?"
"Great, Georgie and Aunt Lou came, it was fun."
The girls were next followed by Lou and unexpectedly by Ty whom Amy assumed would head straight to rounds.
After the girls made their ways around finishing with Amy and Lou found a seat, Ty walked over to gently kiss her. "How are you feeling Ames?"
"I'm good husband and the boys are percolating a bit if that's your next question, I think they're getting impatient."
"I can imagine, it's pretty tight in there, how about you, impatient?"
Amy smiled "I guess, I'm ready whenever they are."
Ty smiled back and lay his hand on Amy's belly "You two behave yourselves in there."
"Think they'll listen Pappa?"
"They'll learn who's boss Mad."
"Mom and Gran?"
They all laughed, "It's a partnership Mad. I need to change for rounds, I got a little wet, Georgie should be almost done getting Checkers out back. I'll stop back before I go. Charlie, you sticking around?"
"For a few hours at least Ty, I've been designated the lunch grill-master, besides, I miss Amy and she's about to get very busy."
Ty smiled "She misses you too, it's good you're here."
"Kids, what's next for you all?"
"Getting changed, check on the rescues for us and Jax if he wants to help, after lunch I guess last check for school, first day outfits and packing up, hopefully significant others for a ride." Charlotte answered.
"Well, burgers and salads for lunch, you all better get to it." Amy answered, "let me know if you need any help with your school stuff."
Ty came down a few minutes after the kids barreled through heading towards the rescue barn. He stopped in the kitchen before coming outside, "Can I get anyone anything from inside before I go?" He asked walking over to Amy. "Ames, you good?"
"I'm fine and I'm sure someone will fetch me anything I need. Go get your rounds done Ty and then you can come and sit with us and enjoy the day holding my hand."
"Sounds like a plan, kids?"
"With the rescues, I'm sure you'll see them on rounds."
"Excellent, anything else?"
Robin smiled "if you could remind Chuck and Jake that it's Labor Day."
Ty smiled "I'll be sure to do that Rob."
After leaning over to kiss Amy he waved to the rest and headed off.
"He's scared."
"I don't know if he's scared Lou, more anxious I think, worried. Ty's always been a worrier."
"He can join the club." Charlie muttered.
"Is there a club Charlie?"
"We're all worried and anxious to some extent Amy, it's just human nature."
"Well, I'm glad you've switched to a hospital delivery Amy, twins seem, I don't know, I'm just glad."
"Yeah, I won't lie Lou, I had my heart set on trying a home delivery but you're right, this is definitely the safer choice."
Amy leaned back and made a mild gasp before reaching for both Charlie's and Lou's hands and squeezing. A second later she was taking deep breaths and letting them out slowly. While it felt like minutes going by it was over in less than one.
"Ok Amy?" Charlie asked apprehensively.
She nodded and took a few more breaths. "I'm good, it's passing already, Braxton Hicks."
"Can I get you something sweetheart?"
"How about a cup of tea Gran, thanks."
"Anyone else?"
"I'll have a cup of coffee Betty, I'll come with." Charlie said standing and stretching.
"The pot's reasonably fresh Charlie." Betty said setting up a pot of tea to steep.
"It's fine Betty, this is all pretty nerve racking huh?"
"Can't lie Charlie, I'm nervous. I've been through this before, Lou's not wrong, identical twin births are hard on the body and caring for them, the NICU, coming home, all nerve-racking."
Charlie nodded and sipped at his mug "Like I said, but Amy's strong and she has tons of support."
Both Charlie and Betty got a text almost on top of each other and both glanced at the message and smiled, "She says her ears are twitching." Betty said with a smile.
"Yup." Charlie laughed.
Apparently, Robin's message got through to Chuck and Jake who were walking towards the house soon after Betty and Charlie settled back on the porch.
"Here come the boys." Robin said looking up. "If you don't have plans Mal, a bunch of us are going for a ride after lunch."
"Sounds nice Rob, I'll ask Jake."
"I love days like today when everybody spends time with their horses." Amy said smiling.
"I guess I should pick a horse." Mallory murmured "I'll talk to the girls."
"I'm sure they'll be happy to keep an eye out, how's Hunter working out?"
One of the horses that Pegasus got in as a rescue over the summer came from Wyoming by way of Pennsylvania, as was often the case rescue horses moved around. One day Georgie grabbed him and took him over to see how he did with a few cows and not only was he excited to see then but after the reaction, Georgie used him to cut a couple out of the herd and declared him a probable ranch horse for training.
Bryce assigned the horse they had named Hunter to Jake for more testing and training if warranted and after a couple weeks and a consultation with Chuck and Amy it was Amy who offered the horse to him as his. Jake said yes immediately, in just those two weeks they had formed a bond and both seemed very happy together.
"No worries on that front, he's loving it, actually they both are, one happy couple."
"We were just finishing up Rob."
"It was just a reminder Chuck, come sit with me."
"Jake, Mal was just telling me that you and Hunter are getting along well."
"He's great Amy and smart as a whip."
"Sorry we don't have a bigger herd for you to play with."
"No worries, we've been reining and he loves it, besides I help out August every now and then, I don' really miss Teas herds."
"You'll have to show me you reining one day then."
"Seems we'll have the time for that."
"We've been invited to ride later by the way."
"Sounds nice Mal, I'll ride, who with?"
"So far Georgie and Wyatt, Chuck and Robin, Charlie you joining in?"
"Thanks Mal but I'm sticking with Amy today."
"I could stand to take Kettle around for a couple hours."
"You should definitely do that Betty, I'll have Charlie and Lou to watch over me."
Amy fell asleep on his shoulder soon after Ty settled himself next to her which moved Lou to the swing, his feet sharing the same ottoman she was using. He offered to move and help when Charlie was summoned to get the grill started after word came that the kids were almost done and was waved away. Robin texted Georgie, who had gone back to her apartment after rounds and got a text back that they'd be along soon.
When Betty grabbed Mallory and Robin to help her get ready Ty signaled her to watch for the kids since Amy was sleeping. She acknowledged with a smile as Georgie and Wyatt walked up to the side of the house. Ty leaned over and mouthed the word "sleeping" gaining an acknowledgement by head nods as Georgie headed inside to see if Betty needed any help and Wyatt headed down to talk with Charlie and Chuck by the grill.
It was the motorcycles that eventually woke her when John and Trish turned down the road towards and passed the ranch house coasting by with a wave at the porch. Amy opened her eyes and sighed before straightening herself in her chair.
"Ok Ames? John and Trish just rode by, I think that's what woke you."
"Trish and John are going on a trail ride."
"Really."
"Trail ride and a picnic, she's very excited and all your doing Ty."
"I guess, lunch should be ready soon."
"I have to pee my love, help me up."
She stood with a helping hand and leaned up to kiss him.
"Need me?" He asked.
"Always, but I'll make it to bathroom on my own."
Ty smiled "I'll check in with Charlie and those burgers."
Amy smiled "I could eat a burger" she said heading to the door.
"I'll get you one."
"The perfect husband." She called back from inside.
On her way back Amy found that Lou and Robin had made their way in both were busy mixing salads, so she found a seat somewhat out of everyones way.
"Can I get you something Amy?"
"I'm fine Lou, I was promised a burger."
Betty smiled "Any minute, the buns went out while you were in the bathroom. Have a pickle in the meantime."
"I'm not supposed to have pickles."
Betty laughed again "I really think at this stage the point is moot sweetheart, here." She said smiling and loading a half sour pickle onto a small plate.
Amy smiled and bit down "So good! How about some chips?"
"Let's not push it, how about some potato salad instead, oh here comes Chuck with a platter of burgers."
"I'll get the door for him." Robin said wiping her hands and heading past Amy.
She stood and watched Chuck come in and lay the platter down in what was obviously one of the spaces left open for them. A moment later Ty came through the door with the second platter which included sausages and glancing at the table lay it down in the only other space open.
"Excellent!" Amy said grabbing for a plate and reaching for a burger, placing a sausage in a sliced bun which she opened. She immediately put ketchup on the burger and mustard on the sausage a slice of tomato on each followed by a scoop each of potato salad and cole slaw alongside them, grabbed a second pickle and turned right into Georgie.
"Where are you eating Amy?"
"I guess the porch, come join me, your mom's just checking in at home."
"Got everything you need Ames?" Ty asked reaching for a plate.
"I think so my love, we're on the porch, let the kids know there's food please." Amy answered grabbing a bottle of water and shoving in her pocket with a fork and some napkins.
As she settled and reached over for her burger, she saw the kids heading out of the barn coming towards the house. Each waved and greeted her on the way past for washing up and returned with a plate of food a few minutes later with the girls heading to the lawn and the sun for their lunch and Jackson making his way over to sit with Amy, Georgie, Ty and Mallory soon to be joined by Lou who was on the phone checking in with Alberta before lunch.
"Can I get you something else Ames?" Ty asked as Amy sat back in her chair alongside her empty plate.
She laughed "I think I'm full Ty."
"You certainly look full."
"Thanks Mal though these days looks can be deceiving."
As lunch ended most of the crowd was off to their ride which now included Ty at Amy's insistence.
"I was thinking of staying with you."
"I know my love but maybe you should take a ride with the kids while it's still easier than having me and the babies in the hospital where you'll be torn for the time. Charlie's here with me and Erma and Sally will be by in a little while to visit. It's the last day before school, go be with the kids for a couple hours."
"We fished this morning."
Amy frowned, "that's not an answer, the children are yours 24 hours a day, go ride sweetheart."
"Ok, I didn't mean it the way it sounded."
"I know you didn't, it's just that Labor Day around here has always been a family day, we fish and then we ride. It's just a day to be together before the madness of school starts robbing us of time together and we're adding two infants into the mix."
"I feel guilty about our time together, you and me."
"And I feel guilty about our lack of time from them, do it for me sweetheart."
Ty sighed at the one request he couldn't deny and stood "I'll change into riding clothes."
Amy smiled "My hero, kiss?"
"Of course." He said leaning over to touch lips.
"Still love me?"
"Forever."
It was Jackson's idea to visit the nature rescue center and Ty made the executive decision that there were just too many riders along to bother the center, so the group split with Ty, Betty and the kids who now included Carson and April with the twins and their beaus, who were also dropped off, riding along with Lou, Georgie, Wyatt, Robin and Chuck. This second group took the dogs along with them.
In the interim after lunch Erma had ridden over with April alongside her to join the trail ride leaving August to drive over with Kimmie. Sally and Tom showed up a few minutes later with Carson and Bobby, both also joining the others. Brin had a gig and Meg would bring her after.
"So sis, how are you feeling?"
Amy smiled, "Ok I guess Erma, I'm not the most patient person in the world."
"Truer words have never been spoken, why don't we take a walk, it's what they'll do Wednesday anyway, walking might just do the trick."
"I can walk, I've been sitting for a while anyway."
"Anyone else?"
"Me for sure." Sally said standing.
Charlie nodded and stood as well while August and Tom agreed to stay back and watch over Kim in front of a TV while the Mets who were definitely in the running for a playoff slot battled the Cardinals in a Labor Day double-header.
"Upstairs or downstairs Amy?" August asked referring to the basement family room or the music room across for the library.
"Upstairs is easier with Kimmie, the potty's all set up in the bathroom and there's a box of stuffed critters up there for her to play with."
Charlie watched Amy walk towards the porch steps and put out his arm for her to take down. There was no plan, simply follow where Amy walked which today was past the barns and to the slight rise where once over, the Alpaca herd roamed most days in the late summer.
"How's Diane?" Amy asked referring to Charlie now pregnant daughter in California.
"Doing well, I'll see her next weekend in the city, hopefully after seeing your two newcomers."
"Oh that's definitely going to happen, I'd say Thursday the latest, Miriam was pretty adamant about this week, that's for sure." Amy answered.
"So, what's her due date Charlie?"
"December 19 or thereabouts Erma, looks like California for the holidays for me this year."
"You taking Chuck and Robin?"
"Yup, Bridgett and Bryce know, you'll be covered."
"I'm not worried about being covered just Chuck balking at the idea."
"Not with Robin around, Diane loves her, and Robin wouldn't miss it for the world."
"We'll miss you all Charlie."
"Thanks Erma, I think I'll miss the family, snow and August's cider, I know Robin'll miss Christmas around here."
Amy stopped for a breather when they topped the rise and took a few minutes to catch her breath. They all looked over the Alpaca herd and walked down a few minutes later.
"That's a fair amount of cria."
"80 with 16 machos, it was a good year."
"You get rid of those right?" Sally asked.
"Most of this macho group are scheduled for Alberta; Haddie wants them and will keep some and sell the rest."
They stopped in a line against the fence and watched the herd milling about. It wasn't long before they were noticed and being the ultimate nosy creature several hembra followed their cria over to the fence to check out the humans.
Erma smiled "they are absolutely the most adorable creatures aren't they?"
"That they are." Amy agreed putting her hand out as a hembra came by for scratches.
It was only a few moments before they were all servicing whatever alpacas happened close enough.
On the way back they heard the approaching group before seeing them and moved to the side as the riding group led by Ty and Betty came over the rise and saw them waiting for riders to pass.
"Hey mom's" rang out from Jackson, Cars and April as they saw their moms on the trail.
Smiles and waves were returned from those same moms as the group passed. Betty and Ty were bringing up the rear and both stopped rather than passing with a wave.
"How was the nature center?" Amy asked the two mounted adults.
"Always a good time." Ty answered with a smile. "You good?"
"Fine, just taking a walk on a nice day, they behaving themselves?"
"They were great but now it's snack time and there are those pocket pies waiting."
Pocket pies, also known as hand pies were simply what they sounded like, half-moon fruit pies small enough to fit in your hand like the assorted packaged commercial snack pies sold at any convenience store except that these were made by Bobby and Sally and were exceptionally good especially when they were still warm from the oven.
Amy smiled "I'll try not to eat them all before you're all done."
They spotted Meg Caldwell sipping a cup of coffee on the porch as they walked past the barns towards the house. She waited to take Charlie's arm up the stairs where Meg had stood to welcome them back.
"Brin?" Amy asked.
"They're waiting for her at the river landing; she rode off a little while ago. Sam's with the baseball crew inside. How are you feeling?" She asked as Amy sat.
"Same, like a stuffed turkey waiting for the stuffing to be pulled out."
"It'll be over soon Amy."
"That's the plan Margaret. You hungry? Did you have lunch?"
"I'm fine, any plans for today?"
"Porch and bathroom for me, you guys?"
"I'm good and Sam's perfectly fine with baseball all day."
They both turned when the porch door opened for Charlie who was carrying a small platter of hand pies straight from the oven out to where Amy and Meg were sitting. He was followed by Erma and Sally with juice boxes which seemed the easiest thing at this point.
"They smell and look amazing Sal."
"Thanks Amy, this was mostly Bobby though while I manned the stand this morning."
Amy took one off the top and lay it on her plate while popping a straw into her juice box. "What are the choices Sal?"
"Apple of course, blueberry, strawberry and I think 6 tart cherries."
"6, what are the odds?"
Sally laughed "there's like 5 dozen so not great."
Amy smiled before biting down and immediately discovered two things. First, the hand pie was apple and second, if was still very hot.
"Are you nuts?" Meg exclaimed "You know how hot those things are out of the oven."
Amy moved the half pie around her mouth before swallowing and followed it with a sip of juice.
"Don't be a baby Margaret, they're best steaming hot."
Erma and Sally both laughed and broke theirs in to revealing a large puff of steam and their fillings, Erma's blueberry and Sally's apple like Amys.
"Well Charlie, let's see." Amy said with a nudge.
"If I do this here and it's a cherry, you get half."
"Ok by me." Amy said smiling.
"Not Ok by me Amy."
"I'll give you half my apple."
"Oh yeah, like that's fair."
"Fine, I don't want it."
"Right, like I'll survive that day."
Meg laughed "just do it Charlie, there's no way around it."
"Apple." He said breaking it in half. "I like apple."
"Great, with my luck the kids will get them and share with their other halves."
Just then Georgie came out with a small plate and bit into a pie.
"Cherry, awesome!"
"Come share Georgie, you can have half my apple."
Georgie looked up and smiled after swallowing the half in her mouth. Looking right at Amy she popped the second half into her mouth "suck eggs." She said her mouth half full and licking her fingers which broke the crowd on the porch up in laughter.
"What's so funny?" Jackson asked walking out on to the porch.
"Your mom." Erma answered.
"What flavor did you get sweetheart?"
"Blueberry, and April got strawberry so we shared. Cars got a cherry."
"Who else?"
"Brin and Charlie, they shared with Bobby and Mad."
"Like that wasn't a fix." Amy muttered.
"And dad and Aunt Lou, they're having coffee with theirs."
"My own husband and sister."
"Stop Amy, there's still one left it seems" Sally said laughing "and we have a few jars of filling left, I'll bring some to the hospital just for you."
"Thank you Sally."
The day went on much as it had to this point with Amy fading into a nap every now and then usually with Ty, Charlie or Lou at her side either holding her hand or acting as a pillow. They laughed and filled the day with birthing stories of their own, both the men and the women from their perspectives. Dinner was eventually laid out as a buffet of leftover sides and Silo fried chickens along with several racks of ribs that were set in the huge Pegasus smokers early that morning. All pitched in to clean up after dinner with the guests mostly leaving soon after as the kids had their all-important first day of school starting bright and early.
When they finally settled in bed Ty joined Amy under the covers as they faded. All the plans for the next morning, packed bags with school supplies, first day of school outfits chosen and laid out waiting for the kids to change into after chores which would not be ignored were set. All the details of which ran through Amy's thoughts as she settled in to sleep.
In the morning Ty was surprised to wake up and find Amy showered and getting dressed. Determined to see the kids off on their first day of school she had pushed herself to wake earlier than she had been lately.
"Hey, what's up, you Ok?"
"I'm fine, I want to see them before school."
"I think they would have understood Ames."
"I know they would have my love, especially the girls, but I'd feel terrible about it."
"I get it."
Amy smiled "I know you do, so you get ready, I'm just going to make sure they're Ok getting ready, and I'll see you downstairs."
"I'll be down soon."
She bypassed Jackson's room and went straight to the girls where she found Maddie braiding Charlie's hair. They were both dressed in new Ariats and blouses and Amy noticed their backpacks full and waiting at the door.
"You two Ok?"
"We're great mom, almost done."
"Well, you both look nice, so I'll check on JT and see you downstairs for breakfast."
She knocked at Jacksons door a moment later and found him dressed and checking through his backpack.
"All ready champ."
"Morning mom, yup, just double checking everything."
"Ready for breakfast?"
"Sure thing, I'll be down in a minute, where's Dad?"
"Getting dressed, I'm sure he's excited about walking you to the bus."
Betty smiled at her when she walked into the kitchen, "I'm glad you came down Amy, I wasn't sure what you were planning."
Amy sat as Betty slid a cup of tea across to her. "I have no plans Gran but I couldn't miss at least seeing them off to school. I'll watch from the porch. Ty'll walk them up to the busses."
"How are you feeling sweetheart, get any rest?"
"I did actually with a couple short breaks. I can't wait until this part is over that's for sure."
"The kids voted pancakes for breakfast Amy, I could make you something else if you want."
"Pancakes are fine Gran, you need help?"
"Do you want to help?"
Amy smiled "can I do it sitting down?"
"That's what I thought, we're fine, the girls will get the rest done."
"What are your plans for the day Gran?"
"I have paperwork, but my priority is staying close to home."
"You don't have to worry Betty."
Betty laughed flipping the pancakes "yeah, that's not gonna work. I have no better place to be anyway."
"It's nice to have you close."
The group came down together, the twins, Jackson, Ty and Mallory. Jake had headed out much earlier.
"Morning all, girls get the table set for pancakes please."
"Morning moms", rang out as they each passed with a kiss. Ty stopped and bent over for a gentle kiss before returning to his seat and a mug of coffee delivered promptly by Mallory who sat herself down with a mug for herself.
"Plans for the day Mal?"
"I might go for a ride with Georgie, she has to collect some blood samples from the other stables, Betty, you hanging back today?"
"Go ride Mallory, I'll be around."
"We'll be back by lunch so it won't be too long."
"I won't be further than the surgical building for now until those babies are home so you both don't have to hover."
"I'm good hovering son." Betty said stacking pancakes on a platter.
"I'm paid to hover." Mallory said grabbing some berries and orange slices onto her plate.
Amy smiled "so much love."
It was obvious the kids were excited about their first day of school and chatted endlessly about seeing their friends in that familiar setting. After clearing they headed out to the porch to, for the first time, hug Amy goodbye before heading off with Ty to meet the bus.
From her now daily seat on the porch, she waved and was able to hold off her tears until they were mostly down the entrance road to the county highway where they'd be picked up.
Betty sat with her for the 15 minutes it took for the walk and the wait until they saw the bus pass the entrance and stop. 5 minutes later Ty was back and moved into the seat next to her and took her hand.
"All went Ok I assume?"
"It was fine, April was holding a seat for Jackson and the girls sat down together."
"They'll move when Bobby and Brin get picked up, and Carson will find a spot nearby."
"I thought Bobby was driving?"
"They're not allowed to drive in the first week this way the bus drivers know them and there's no problem if they have to take the bus for whatever reason later on in the year."
"Well, I have to go or I'll be late for rounds, I won't be far."
Amy smiled "I know you won't, go on, I'll be here."
"I'll stop back when I have some time."
"I'll be fine Ty, go take care of my horses."
An hour later with Betty in the kitchen and Mallory off for a ride accompanying Georgie on her morning rounds, Amy napped after falling asleep reading her morning papers and going through her morning mail. No matter how well she slept through the night it never seemed enough. When she woke she passed through the kitchen on her way to the bathroom and was met with a cup of tea held by Betty that she carried out following Amy to her chair.
"Have a good nap?"
"These days they're all good Gran."
"Twins are hard, I remember when the girls were born."
"I can't imagine one's much easier."
"Sure seemed that way with Jackson but I've only carried one."
"This too shall pass Betty."
"Sooner than later sweetheart." Betty answered patting her hand.
They watched as rounds seemed to finish up and Ty came out along with Sarah and Annabelle all three walking towards the house and chatting. Amy couldn't help but notice the two tubes sticking out past Annabelle's head.
Ty was first up the stairs and over to Amy leaning down for a quick kiss before sitting and laying his hand gently on her belly.
"How's it going?"
"Napped a bit, I'm fine Ty."
"I have some stuff to go over, some papers and writing I'm behind with, you good?"
"Go do your work and get caught up."
"I'll be in the surgery office if you need me."
Amy nodded and smiled before leaning over as best she could and kissing him again before he stood. "Looks like Sarah and Anna need some time."
Amy glanced over and saw both chatting with Betty as Ty left back towards the barns.
"Amy, we've got some plans to go over if you're up to it."
"I'm good Sarah, whatcha got?"
"I'll leave you three to get on with your work and start lunch. You two joining?"
Sarah looked over at her daughter who shrugged and nodded. "We'd love lunch Betty, don't go overboard for our sakes."
"Soup and sandwiches Sarah, not overboard."
Sarah nodded as Annabelle grabbed the first tube and slid out a large rolled up map.
"Messina is ready for the fall plantings and I just wanted to go over the schedule and what we're putting in. Ruth's already signed off, but I think she'd sign anything at this stage, she's a dream."
"And Violette?"
"Definitely signed off and she'd be here but the big CPS inspection is coming this week and she's nervous as all get out." Sarah said.
"I know what that's like but Betty and I were over at her place the other day and she's really got nothing to worry about. She's ready for the inspection and whatever foster they come up with. I think Tom's also double and triple checked everything, they'll be fine, and they'll make great parents."
"That they will, that's two on staff who can't think straight."
"Understandable, who else?"
Annabelle laughed "Ty's pretty out there these days Amy."
"No different than most husbands." Sarah said laughing along. "We've been keeping an eye on him Amy, don't fret, it's hard on the men, they do their jobs and become this nervous puddle. How've you been feeling?"
"The waiting is interminable Sarah; I wish I had a clue."
"Do you mind?" Annabelle asked reaching her hand out towards Amy's belly.
Amy smiled "Nope, go ahead."
She watched as Annabelle lay her hand on her belly and closed her eyes for a second before smiling and looking at her. "Anxious crew you've got there boss."
"And?"
Annabelle looked at Sarah who nodded "go ahead."
"Not much longer Amy, the moon will bring it on."
"I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow morning."
"You'll be in labor before then."
"Good to know, anything else?"
"They love your voice."
"Don't all babies love their mother's voice?"
"Not by a long shot." Sarah added with a smile.
Amy smiled "Thank you Anna, I'll take what you said to heart."
They sat engrossed in their work going through the Messina property with the list of plantings they would make along with the schedule set up by the environmental company they were now using for both Messina and the Adirondack properties now that the conservation plan for the Adirondacks had been approved by the State and Federal authorities. They had decided that since both sites would be set up with medicinal plantings that there wouldn't be much overlap between the two. They had a list of medicinals they wanted and placed them on either property based on landscape and the properties needed for good growth. Annabelle and Violette would be their point people through the year which is what it would take to get both properties set up.
They worked until they saw Ty walking back from the surgery. They had seen Georgie and Mallory ride back and stop at the barn where Jake came out to spot Mallory off of Spartan whom she had taken. Georgie had grabbed Isabelle rather than one of her own. Both were coming to lunch and joined up with Ty walking back to the house.
"Lunch ready Betty?, seems the crew's on their way back."
"It is and Wyatt and Robin's on her way with Charlie so we'll be a full house with Chuck and Wyatt joining."
"How about we finish the other property after lunch which will get me a couple hours closer to that moon."
"I'll see if Betty needs any help mom, sit with Amy."
"Thank you Anna, for everything, you really stepped up with these projects."
"Thanks for the chance Amy, I love this stuff."
"Keeps it in the family I guess." Amy answered with a smile to Sarah.
After lunch Amy was feeling pretty good and decided that she could definitely start looking over the Adirondack plans with the understanding that she might fade. Both Anna and Sarah were fine with that.
Surprisingly, she was engaged enough in the plans and the company to stay awake for it all when Betty rewarded them with hot drinks and freshly baked cookies that she doled out sparingly as they were made to welcome the kids home from their first day of school. Mallory had joined the group at once point and sat down to work on her knitting, a new hobby mentored by Betty who highly recommended it for the long spells of babysitting the twins.
With the plans done to everyone's satisfaction and snacks available they sat in a group which now included Betty and chatted, enjoying the late summers day which was pleasant with the brief interruption of one of Amy's Braxton Hicks contractions, her third of the day. The kids were expected at 3:15 and Amy smiled when she saw Ty walking towards the house at about 3 o'clock. He'd greet the kids and check on them upstairs during homework time before returning to medical for afternoon rounds. He smiled going by and was back a few minutes later when Sarah and Annabelle stood and excused themselves back to potions to check bloodwork and get ready for afternoon rounds.
"All good Ames?"
"All good my love, I actually had a productive day. The plans for both the Messina site and the Adirondack house are great. Annabelle really did an amazing job."
"How are you feeling?"
"I feel great and Anna's magic touch predicts I'll be in labor when the moon rises."
"Sounds promising."
"I'm ready, have I mentioned that?"
Ty laughed "Only a million times. Can I get you something?"
"Nope, come sit, the kids will be here soon."
"I'll deal with them, no reason for you to go up and down."
"I plan on hugs and a nap in the library, working was great but I'm tired."
They sat and held hands for a few minutes until they watched the top of the bus pass and stop briefly. A minute later the three headed down the road which included Jackson's inevitable wave when the porch came into view.
"I don't think I ever enjoyed school as much as JT does, that's for sure." Ty said waving back.
"The girls like school too, he gets some of that from them."
Mallory looked over, "Kids like school when they're raised to like school, it's definitely environmental. If your parents don't focus on it or are hostile towards school at home that's what the kids pick up. By high school it's a real struggle sometimes."
"The voice of experience." Betty said not looking up from her knitting "we've always stressed the importance of school and that respect be paid to the faculty. I can't imagine what it's like dealing with kids who are brought up thinking teachers are the enemy."
Jackson dropped his backpack on the porch and made his way to Amy who held out her arms to receive his hug. "Hey mom!"
"Welcome home sweet boy, how was you first day and how's Mrs. Sugarman?"
"Both great!"
"Nice smile?"
"Yup."
"Homework?"
"Not a lot, math review sheet and I have to list 10 things we did this summer and pick a book from the list."
"Doesn't sound like much, get your snack and your homework done, go on, Dad'll check and then chores. Check with the girls, they probably read off the same list."
"What are you doing?"
"Nap time in the library for me so be quiet when you come down later."
"I promise."
Amy smiled as he left and she immediately moved on the the girls who liked their schedule which as always seem to overlap as if it was some bizarre rule or they just wanted to torture the teachers. She had confirmed with them the year before that they'd never been asked if they wanted to split up so just chalked it up to that bizarre quirk. When she asked them if they wanted to go it alone, they both quickly said no to which Maddie added "that would be giving up our superpowers, who would want to do that?"
She sat with the kids at the kitchen table while they snacked and hugged them again as they cleaned their dishes and left for their homework assignments. Ty walked her to the library where she immediately went to her most comfortable setup, sitting in her big cozy winged back chair with her feet up on its' matching ottoman and grabbing a journal from the stand next to her. Ty kissed her and lay a light blanket next to her before closing the doors and leaving her to relax and rest.
"Dinner mom." Charlie whispered gently laying her hand on Amy's shoulder.
"Mmmmmm." Amy sighed opening her eyes and raising her arms to stretch. "Thank you Charlie, all good, your horses, the rescues?"
"All good mom, how was your nap?"
"Nice, come on, help me up, I have to pee and wash."
Charlie smiled and offered her arm for Amy to use and then walked her to the bathroom. "Ok here?"
"I'm fine sweetheart, I'll just be a minute."
Dinner was just family with Mallory and Jake at an impromptu dinner out with Georgie and Wyatt. The meal was nothing special, roasted chicken and veggies which was a family favorite, and everyone complimented Betty for her efforts. Amy however did not eat much which was noticed.
"You Ok Amy?"
"I'm fine Ty, just a bit twingy, my back's acting up and I'm not really that hungry. To be fair I did snack a bunch this afternoon."
"Well, if you get peckish later there's always a sandwich." Betty added seemingly not overly concerned as Amy did eat her plates worth.
Later, as usual they settled in the master bedroom, this kids with their devices and Jackson engrossed in his newest book. Amy and Ty held hands while he read a paper and she scrolled through her iPad making notes on cases or signing off. She squirmed a bit in her chair as her back was still achy, but it was good keeping her feet up.
"So mom, you're going in tomorrow, excited?"
"It's probably not right to answer this way Mad but enough's enough, excited doesn't begin to cover it. I need these guys out."
"I can't wait."
Charlie laughed "I think we all can't wait JT and it's completely understandable how you feel mom."
"Thanks Charlie, I think it's time for me to lay down, maybe I'll get some sleep. Come give me hugs and I'll see you all in the morning."
She was in bed first, laying in the cocoon of pillows that she built around herself. She had long since abandoned the whole idea of snuggling or spooning with Ty. It was either too uncomfortable or hot and with her constant shifting she kept waking him and he needed his rest.
She slept for a decent shift and opened her eyes in the dark at one point, the clock told her it was 2:03 AM and she shifted to sit up feeling the need for the bathroom. Standing, she noticed the shades askew and the moonlight shining through and walked over to adjust them and bring the room back to darkness. At the window she glanced through at the moon and smiled. A second later she felt the release of weight and the sure knowledge that the space between her legs was wet. It took a second before it struck her that her water had broken. Annabelle was right, it came with the moon. It was an uncomfortable feeling and she was confused for a second before reality kicked in.
"Ty?" She said softly then a bit louder "Ty."
"Hmmm?" He responded.
"It's time my love."
"Time?"
Amy smiled "Time, my water's broke, we have to go."
The words woke him immediately "Time!" He exclaimed sitting up and immediately reached for his phone and dialing while sitting up on the edge of the bed "I'm calling for Amy Fleming" he said and then pausing, "Miriam Goldstein's patient" and then after another brief pause, "about 20 minutes or so. Thanks."
"Get dressed while I dry off and you can help me Ty. I'll text Betty from the bathroom."
