Evelyn helped Morgan pack her backpack as the little girl got into the car, and Tony approached her in the living room as she prepared to join her little sister. "Don't worry about taking her, I'll take her." Tony announced, but she was cautious. "Are you sure? I can take her." Evelyn insisted. He took the bag, smirking at her. "Go enjoy your morning, really, kid. You rarely get to relax." Tony insisted as well.
"Just amuse the man." Pepper shouted from the kitchen, making the woman sigh.
"Okay, Tony. Thank you."
He smirked, "See you later, Autumn."
Morgan waved goodbye to her from the car, a slight pout as if she'd missed her, but she knew Morgan was excited to get some alone time with their father. Evelyn smiled as she waved back, shouting, "I love you!" as the car drove off. Pepper came to her with a file, smiling pleasantly. "I'll stop by and give this to Captain for you. Enjoy your day off."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Okay, but please tell me if you need anything. I feel weird doing nothing."
"Of course, sweetie."
Pepper had arrived at the Compound close by the afternoon when Pepper saw everyone gathered in the common area. She smiled in a welcoming manner when she saw the seriousness on their faces. Her eyebrows furrowed, noticing the Avengers and SHIELD agents were all looking at her. She felt a chill run up her spine.
"Pepper, you shouldn't be here." Natasha spoke, but she pushed the Black Widow away. "I came to bring a report for Rogers... what's happened?"
No one seemed to answer her, but she saw the board behind them, and she went pale when she saw a video playing behind them on the screen. She saw Tony and Morgan attacked, Tony unable to get his suit in time as he and Morgan were taken into a vehicle unconscious. The car struck, and people were in a panic in New York City, and she came closer.
"Tell me you have something."
"Pepper, you should go." Steve said, not wanting to upset her.
"That's my family! I'm not going anywhere! Jarvis, call Evelyn here. Right now."
"Yes, Mrs. Stark."
When Evelyn arrived, she was unsure what had happened, but when she came to the Compound, there were vast SHIELD agents. She went through the front and was immediately blocked.
"We can't let you in, Ms. Stark."
"My mother called me here. Let me pass."
"I'm afraid we can't-"
A hand came to her shoulder, and she looked back to see Bucky looking down at her. His blue eyes locked with her brown ones momentarily before looking at the agents.
"I've got her."
"S-Sir..."
He pushed past them, guiding her before his hand dropped, walking her to the elevator. She was nervous and unsure of what was happening but smiled at him gratefully. "Thanks, Bucky."
"Yeah, no problem."
Evelyn stayed silent, but Bucky wasn't oblivious to her nervousness. He knew she was in for troubling news and didn't want to be the one to tell her. When the elevator doors opened, Pepper was yelling at them.
"Tony is a part of this team! They have our daughter! You have the location!"
"It's not easy; we must plan a strategy and get approval. These people aren't a known terrorist group. There are protocols—" Pepper interrupted Steve.
"I bet you'd be charging in there if it was Barnes or Wilson."
Steve took a deep breath when he saw Evelyn approaching with a cautious look. Pepper noticed her daughter and frowned as the young woman, accompanied by Bucky, came closer. She hugged Evelyn tightly, and reality struck when Evelyn saw the video playing behind them. Without saying a word, Evelyn embraced her mother, providing comfort.
Peter, Bucky, and the team observed the distressed family, but Evelyn refrained from crying, choosing to stay strong for Pepper.
"Give us a moment..."
She guided her mother to another room, wanting to comfort her in privacy. Pepper wiped her tears when the door closed and looked at her daughter determinedly. "Evelyn, listen to me. You need to get them."
Her eyes widened momentarily, and she couldn't fight those words. Tony was her adopted father; Morgan was her sister; this was her family. Seeing the look on her mother's face, she nodded.
"You're my family. I'll bring them back, I promise."
Pepper came to her carefully, her hands coming to her shoulders before sliding down to hold hands with her daughter. "I know Tony wanted you away from this life, but please, I'll take responsibility for this, okay? Bring our family back; I'll send you the coordinates."
"I will."
Pepper hugged her again, kissing Evelyn's cheek one last time before the young woman left, failing to see Peter and Bucky's eyes on her. Pepper took a deep breath, "Jarvis, remove any recordings or traces of Evelyn. Do you understand? I don't want them to have anything to pin her on this."
"Consider it done, Mrs. Stark."
The team was watching the live feed and discussing the best course of action when Peter noticed a vehicle going at high speed and was surprised, coming closer to the screen. Steve saw and looked back, the team shifting back to the screen. Bucky didn't doubt in his mind who it was driving.
"Wait, who's that?"
Evelyn exhibited unwavering determination as she drove at breakneck speed, dodging bullets with remarkable composure. Accelerating through the building, she suddenly vanished and reappeared as she flung the door open. Swiftly, she subdued her adversaries, her expression impassive as she wielded her staff precisely. Her teleportation ability allowed her to move seamlessly from one enemy to the next, incapacitating them without lethal force, all to ensure her family's safety. She navigated the building's floors agilely, swiftly neutralizing her foes. She teleported short distances, careful not to give her secret away too much.
She fought through several floors, determined to reach her family as alarms blared around her. As she battled on the next floor, Tony, restrained beside Morgan, watched Evelyn fight."SIS!"
Turning around, Evelyn heard Morgan's voice and began to fight through more earnestly. She teleported through the enemies and freed them as fast as she could. "Are you out of your mind? Who told you to come here?" Tony wanted to yell at her, but how she fought so quickly was remarkable.
"We'll talk about it later, but we need to go. There's a car on the bottom floor. Get to it; I have your backup cuffs-!"
"Uh, dad?" Morgan interrupted when they saw an aircraft from afar preparing a missile.
"Jarvis?" Evelyn asked.
"It appears to be a heat sensor, Ms. Stark."
"Tony, quick," she ripped the fire extinguisher and gave it to him, "Spray me."
Tony did it quickly without question, thinking ahead of her as he hosed her. It was cold before he carried Morgan, running towards the stairs. Evelyn didn't think twice when she ran towards the window and took a deep breath as Tony made it to the vehicle with Morgan in his arms before teleporting onto the missile and teleporting it back towards the aircraft, blowing her back as she let go. She landed near the bridge she drove over earlier, losing her balance momentarily as the aircraft exploded, landing on the crate with a groan.
She began to be fired at and teleported around the enemies, distracting her enemies as her family drove off. She promised never to kill anyone and fought hard to avoid that. She used her staff, extending it as she took it out, defending against them. She teleported deftly, making quick work of her enemies, but she was quickly overwhelmed. She kept calm as she was thrown into an alleyway, hiding in plain sight.
The remaining men came towards her, but she blended into the wall, camouflaging against it as they walked past her. Then she came out, knocking out the remaining enemies as she heard more cars coming. She stood there, staff in hand, preparing for more enemies on approach.
She is unsurprised that it was with SHIELD agents but is surprised when she sees her father approaching them in his Iron Man suit. He didn't even bother to land as he scooped her up. He came back to the car they were previously in, allowing herself to teleport in the backseat as her sister immediately hugged her, snuggling into her.
"You came for me." she said softly.
"Of course I did. I'm guessing Pepper sent you here?"
"...She said she would be responsible. I'm sorry." she confessed, feeling Tony look at her sternly.
"Me too, kid. It'll take it one step at a time." he told her as Morgan snuggled into her, relieved to know her big sister was okay.
Arriving back at the Compound, she saw her father standing before her protectively as if to calm down the SHIELD agents, their weapons drawn on Evelyn. She immediately gave herself space from Morgan.
"Now, let's put the guns down-hey!" Tony attempted to push the men back, hearing Morgan screaming for them to stop as Evelyn was forced onto her knees by the agents. The Avengers watched as they tried to handcuff her; when Tony pushed through, Pepper pulled Morgan back as Evelyn began to hyperventilate, trying to calm herself.
Bucky stepped forward, but Steve held him back, causing the disheveled man by surprise.
"Buck-"
"This isn't right, Steve," he answered, looking at his once-close friend.
Peter Parker came forward, helping her onto her feet as Tony stood protectively before her. He whispered as Natasha separated Tony and the agents: "I've got you, Eve." She leaned onto him, trying to get through the moment as chaos ensued. Her secret seemed to be out despite her adoptive parents' best attempts to keep her safe.
"That. Is. Enough."
Evelyn rubbed her free wrists, Peter's arm around her shoulder, as everyone seemed to look at the source of the familiar tone. She could never forget that voice—Nick Fury. He walked towards her, Tony coming towards her, and his one eye seemed to have locked onto her.
"I knew there was something off about you. Tony seemed too protective."
"Paranoid, really..." Tony rebutted, but he gave him a hard stare, his hand in his pockets as if he were already analyzing the situation. "What you did tonight was not the smartest thing to do. We would would've handled it." Fury ignored Tony, but Evelyn took a deep breath.
"They took my family. I wasn't going to wait. You took too long for us."
Fury didn't respond, unfazed as he paced in front of her. "That might be the case, but they will have assumed you were with SHIELD."
"You tried to arrest me afterward—I'm sure they know I'm not with them," she answered, "and besides, I have no fancy suit like the rest of you. Nothing here is really my color. It's a shame, really." Tony smirked, and some team members realized she had picked up some of Tony's sarcasm.
"You were a kid when Hydra took you, didn't they? Did they do this?"
She saw Bucky tense up in her peripheral vision, but she didn't dare to look, her face hardened by Fury's question.
"What Hydra did to me...doesn't concern you or anyone here." she said coldly. Peter was surprised as he released him slowly. Fury approached her carefully, Tony's back almost hiding her from him. "Oh, but you see, it does. Thanks to a certain someone. We may not have the recordings of what we saw today, though no one can do what you did. You are enhanced and hidden in plain sight."
"For a good reason." Tony pointed out.
"While your coming out hiding may have been for a noble cause, do you realize you put a target on your back? That the enemy knows you exist and what you're capable of?"
She frowned, "So, what? Join you, allow you to use me to your advantage? To give you control of me? I don't think so." Evelyn knew where this was going. She didn't survive Hydra and their manipulation, to endure so much, to fight to survive here too. Fury took a deep breath of his own.
"I'm trying to offer a choice. Would General Ross not come in here and try to send you to the Raft, Ms. Stark? The government will see you as a threat: they'd put a silencer choker on you. You'd be locked in a room with no windows, no visitors, in the middle of the ocean- never to be free. Do you want that?"
"You need to back off," Tony warned him, "She is not a pawn in this game, okay?"
"She isn't yours, either. Who's to say you're not saving for some ulterior motive."
Tony came towards him, but Evelyn stopped him, and Pepper and Morgan came to him. "Tony, don't."
"The decision really isn't up to you, is it?" Fury stated before looking back to the new mutant in the room, and she swallowed hard when she realized he was giving her a choice.
"I know you don't have a good image of us-"
"Not saving my father right away did that, yeah."
"But your ability is something we have never seen before. It saved many lives tonight; you must realize that. You can use this for the greater good."
"Helping my father is enough for me, thanks."
"You don't seem to realize you have an option here!" Fury raises his tone. "You either pick SHIELD or The Raft."
"So prison, no matter what I pick," she said firmly, "Tony Stark is the only person who has had my wellbeing in place. I get that not everyone is fond of him- but I am. And so is our family-"
"You need to make a choice- Stark won't be able to protect you from everything. You need to choose, and it's better with us here. The Raft, you'd never see the light of day without visits. No contact with anyone; please think this through for a moment." Fury told her.
She sighed, running her hand through her hair, oblivious to the team and the agents watching them. Pepper came towards her, cupping her cheek, "I told you I'd be responsible for this, but...please, do what's best for you." Pepper spoke.
She looked at Pepper, her mother, thoughtfully, noticing her saddened and frightened face. Evelyn took a deep breath, nodding reluctantly. She knew what she needed to do.
The team seemed to relate, especially Bucky, who watched her intently. She looked to Fury and nodded slowly, "Fine, I'll...help."
Tony took a deep breath, his mind already concerned and working on ways to keep her safe. Evelyn took his hand and squeezed with reassurance, a small smile to tell him it was okay.
"Great, let's discuss and get you settled in."
