Here is the third chapter in this series released in keeping with my self-imposed upload schedule for this series. The training period is over and now it is time for the entrance exams to begin and we start with the recommended exam that Ruby will be taking that I have done my best to adapt based on what little we know of it from the series while also tailoring it to Ruby in one specific way that is a nod to something in Volume 2 even if Ruby herself wasn't actually asked it. That is all the administrative stuff I have for y'all however there are a few guest reviews to respond to and a good few questions to answer as this is a complex and complicated series so I will do that now. Do keep the reviews and PMs coming as I always like hearing how much y'all are enjoying my work.
To Guest (guest), thank you for your vote for White Rose as one of the pairings. I am still seeing what pairing people want for Ruby though this is my own personal preference, but I will make a final decision in a few chapters time with how to proceed regarding Ruby's potential love interest in this series.
To AutoHunterJ49 (guest), I understand your views on this and while I certainly agree on the Ironwood front and he will not become a villain in this series, though honestly I don't actually expect we will see much of him for a long time, I can't say the same for Adam. I do intend to use the White Fang as a Heteromorph rights turned terrorist group to fit it into the MHA canon and Adam will be one of their sub commanders under Sienna Khan as was shown early on before his coup and the focus shifted to him only. As such he will be a villain in this series when he shows up though given his background with Blake and how in the earlier volumes of RWBY it was Torchwick who led the White Fang in Vale not Adam through Roman's agreement with them he will be the central leader of any White Fang group shown in the earlier parts. As for Adam himself I do not know how much I will use him, if at all, until the current manga final arc when we really see the Heteromorph movement. That is what I will do with him, and he won't be the only violent member of the White Fang. As for Blake's pairing, you will get an answer to her love interest in a few chapters time when it is ready in the story, but I certainly agree with you that they really botched her relationship with Sun as it went from a cute budding romance with Blake clearly having a crush on him to nothing even after he helped her so much which made no sense to me at all. I hope that clears up any remaining questions you have and do keep enjoying my work.
To Jar (guest), I can't answer your question because that would constitute a spoiler. You will have to wait and see what happens with Izuku going forward and how the Sports Festival is adapted to fit RWBY and Black Clover characters and the increased class size into it.
Will U.A. be a hybrid with Beacon so as to train the students to face villains and Grimm? Not exactly, as will be briefly mentioned in this chapter there will be teachings to deal with Grimm and I certainly have a plan for a chapter or two on that front early on especially with what Asta showed last chapter, but it won't be a full hybridization. You will have to wait and see how that works in the coming chapters, but it will be sooner rather than later.
Will non-RWBY characters have weapons to face Grimm? As of right now unless they already have a weapon in their respective canons no they will not. Again, a lot more will be seen in the coming chapters as the new first years start their hero journeys at U.A. and we see how the teaching is adapted to fit the two franchises that have been merged into MHA for this story.
Anyway, sorry for another really long pre-chapter note, the very nature of this story will likely lead to a lot of this kinds of notes going forward. Now though I will end this long note so if you read this (and no worries if you didn't) it's time to sit back and enjoy the third chapter in Black RWBY Academia.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to these three great franchises.
Chapter 3: Recommended Student Exam
Ruby sat in the vast auditorium that U.A. had for these things feeling like it was a bit much for the situation, but she guessed they didn't have anything smaller that could still accommodate a large number of people. There were about 150 to 200 people in the room if Ruby had to guess in a room that could house 10 times that or so.
She figured that for the normal exam the room would be full but right now these were the examinees who, like Ruby, had managed to secure the necessary recommendation or recommendations to take the special exam reserved for candidates like them. Those who got in would automatically be considered at the top of the class because of it though Ruby didn't doubt that there would be normal entrants who were stronger than those who got in via recommendations as well.
Unfortunately, all Ruby's thoughts did for her was make her feel even more like she didn't belong here. These kids were supposedly the best of the best and they were all competing for the 10 spots that were available this way, kids with powerful, versatile or useful Quirks that had earned them this honor. Ruby was here more because of her skills with Crescent Rose, which she couldn't use during the practical exam, than her Quirk. However, she'd been training for this for months, so she steeled herself to listen to Present Mic and do her best.
As soon as Yang had goodbye at the entranceway, Ruby had walked in thinking hard as other students, all in a mix of traditional gakurans for the boys, sailor outfits for the girls, or in some cases more western style uniforms for both genders, walked around her for what was to come. It allowed Ruby a moment to look at everyone while also evaluating herself in the process and she was glad that she didn't look informal for this.
Ruby herself was in the Signal school uniform which was one of the more western style uniforms. As such she was in a white blouse with a thin red bow at her throat and a brown vest done with gold buttons over it all under a maroon blazer with a gold trim. Unlike most, Ruby did wear full length black stockings under her red tartan skirt and the indoor shoes provided though outside she'd wear brown ones. She wished she could wear her cape on her back as Signal's uniform policy allowed for one individualistic item but that wouldn't have looked proper for the exam.
This was technically break so only those who had to be here were on U.A.'s campus and almost as soon as she entered the front doors there were a two reception tables with lines at them to register the students taking the exam depending on where their name was in the alphabet.
Ruby for her part just got into the right line behind a bored looking kid with spikey purple hair in a navy-blue western suit to check in. She'd felt like people were looking at her, after all she was a barely 5-foot girl in the rather noticeable uniform that Signal had so she had to look out of place. Even the other girls her height, notably the one she'd seen on the way in with vermilion colored hair and wearing a simple western style uniform, looked more confident than Ruby felt.
That had lasted even through her check in where she gave her name, middle school, and recommender or recommenders as well as the path she was considering for her hero work. Ruby wasn't a little thrown by the surprise of the employee registering her when she said who she was and that she was on the Huntress path but the recommendation from Ozpin quelled any potential questions the employee might have and Ruby was registered, given a number card, 31 she noted which she took as a good sign as her birthday was October 31st, and a group number on a separate card before being shown to the right room.
Ruby thanked the woman checking her in and headed to the auditorium to wait, finding a seat by herself and noting that many of the candidates had also opted to sit alone. A few were in smaller groups, notably the two girls she'd seen on the way in had been joined by a guy with spike red hair that had a long, woven, braid at the back who seemed to know them and was wearing a rather fancy uniform in a style that Ruby didn't recognize. Other than that trio, though, most of the recommended students seemed to be focused on their own thing as they got ready for what was to come.
"Alright you are all here so let's get this started!" A loud, enthusiastic voice said, and Ruby couldn't help but smile as a man in a black outfit with a wave of blond hair gelled up into an impressive spike and a speaker support item around his neck walked out onto the stage. "Thanks for tuning into U.A.'s resident DJ so let me hear ya make some noise!"
There was silence though Ruby cracked a smile. She may not be the biggest geek when it came to the standard heroes, but she did know the notable ones and it was hard not to like the upbeat Present Mic who was as well known for his radio work as his hero work. Ruby hadn't realized that he was a teacher here and she knew how good he was as a hero so that was a good sign. Even though no one said a thing, Ruby felt more at ease for the first time all morning.
"Keeping it mellow, I like that, alright then onto the main show." Present Mic said moving right along. "You are the lucky 200 who have received a shot at one of the 10 places reserved for students who have received the necessary recommendation or recommendations from notable heroes attesting to your skills and intellect who in their minds would be a great student here at U.A. Be you here looking to follow the path of many and become a standard hero, aim for the illustrious ranks of the Quirk Knights, the noble goals of the Huntsmen and Huntresses, or are still undecided, welcome and good luck in the exams is to come."
Present Mic paused and Ruby noted that another pro hero, one in an archaic and full body blue costume with yellow lines on it and a cloak over his arms entered the room before opening his mouth and spewing forth a cloud of gas from it. From the cloud several clones appeared, and Ruby recognized at once the pro hero Ectoplasm who's clones began to hand out the written exam to the kids as the auditorium was set up in benches like a college would be, making sure that there was a gap between each examinee as he did so.
"As there are so few of you, we have the written exam here and now." Present Mic said with a grin at the surprise and murmurs of a few of the examinees. "You have 3 hours from when I say start to complete it. When the time is done you are to turn it in and head to the cafeteria for a catered lunch. After that please head to the changing rooms designated for the practical exam and change into your gym clothes that you wish to wear for that test before you report to the location on the card given to you when you registered, when the number you have been given and attached to your chest is called. You will learn what the test is when you get to it though just to keep you guessing. Lastly, your interviews are to be afterwards so ready."
Ruby understood this much, she'd brought her black and red sweatpants, black tank top, and a matching sweatshirt for the practical as she'd been instructed to do so, and it was in her bag next to her. She just hadn't expected the written exam right away, but this was U.A. so she should have expected that something like this might happen. Getting what she needed out of her bag, Ruby set it up on the desk before her and said a silent prayer to the spirits, especially her mother's, that she would do well as the exam was given to her face down.
"Alright looks like everyone has the exam." Present Mic said as Ectoplasm nodded from the back of the room. "So, turn over, you're time begins now."
With that a giant timer appeared on the screen behind Present Mic starting at 3 before counting down to 2 hours and 59 minutes. Ruby didn't bother to look at it as she flipped the paper over and put her usually hyperactive mind to focus on the written exam before her. This was the first of her tests today that she'd prepared for and by god she was going to pass it.
"Alright the written exam is done, and you've digested lunch which means that next up is the practical exam ya dig?" Present Mic said to the gathered recommended students who just looked at him nonplussed at what he was saying so he just continued. "You will go 6 at a time and be segregated by gender so get stepping. When you are done make sure to shower and then go to your interview at the scheduled time for it."
Ruby was nervous but this was the least of her worries after all the practice she'd been putting in for it. The written exam hadn't been too bad, she'd done pretty well she thought as she had a strong grasp on the math and science parts of it due to her work with support items, especially Crescent Rose, as well as learning more about physics to deal with her Quirk while the English section had been a breeze seeing as she was fluent in her mother's native tongue having grown up bilingual. The classical Japanese and history portions had been harder, but Ruby had studied for them, so she was sure that she'd passed it.
After that had come lunch though few ate in groups given how most of them didn't know each other and then it was changing into their sweats for the practical. That was done in a few designated changing rooms where they were assigned a temporary locker and Ruby quickly stripped out of her school uniform and into the loose, comfortable black track suit with red stripes on the arms and legs that was her favorite work out outfit and a black tank top under it. She'd been so nervous that she'd actually worn her sports bra to start the day so that wasn't an issue. Now it was time for the practical to begin.
They had been given the numbers at the start of the day and told to pin them to their shirts for the start even if they might lose them due to how their Quirks worked and Ruby had done that with her number, 31, as soon as possible. When that was done she waited with the other girls who'd been recommended, about 80 she would have guessed, for the exam to start, in their designated area just like Present Mic had said.
It seemed that they were alternating groups of boys and girls with any left over being in the one mixed group at the end and the numbers were chosen by random. When your number was called you and the 5 others left to where Present Mic was conducting the exam on campus. That meant that the wait was bad, and Ruby wasn't great at being still, so she lightly paced where she was to loosen up a bit as the other girls did their own thing.
"Numbers 9, 31, 40, 65, 76, and 84 please make your way to the door to the practical." A voice called out into the girls' waiting room and nervously Ruby rose to her feet and headed to the door upon finally hearing her number be called.
Around her 5 other girls got up and made their way to the door that opened as they reached it and they exited into the cool winter air where they were greeted by the same person who'd registered some of them that morning. The administrator then led them through the practical area of campus to where they would take the practical exam so as they walked Ruby took a moment to look at the 5 with her.
The first who stood out by a country mile was the girl wearing number 9. Ruby had noted her before because she was tall, above average height for a Japanese woman let along a girl their age as she was at least 5 foot 9 which towered over Ruby's diminutive height. To top it off the girl had a strange circular ponytail hairstyle for her pitch-black hair. That alone made her stand out as the next tallest was a girl around 5 foot 5, but this girl was even more striking now that Ruby got to see her up close.
Not only was she stunningly beautiful, almost the definition of classic Japanese beauty in all sense of the word who walked with the poise and composure of someone from the highest of upper classes, but she was also a full-figured woman despite being 15 like Ruby. The girl was clearly in shape, but she had more to her, and Ruby couldn't help but notice that the girl was stacked, her bust had to be even bigger than Yang's and that was saying something. All this Ruby knew because the girl only wore a sports bra that did not hide her cleavage and short athletic shorts with sneakers despite the temperature outside.
All that was very odd to Ruby, but it did tell her one thing, well two but the fact that the girl was as shameless about exposing her body as Yang was irrelevant, and that was the outfit had to be tied to her Quirk in some way. After all, the only reason that she was so exposed despite the weather was that she had to have a Quirk that required it kind of like Midnight's Somnambulism Quirk but what Quirk Ruby didn't know. She was sure she'd find out soon though as they suddenly came to a stop to be greeted once more by Present Mic.
Ruby had been so distracted by the tall, busty, girl that she'd not paid attention to the others or where they were going and was now at the start line for the exam. Any lingering thoughts were driven from her head as she looked out in confusion at the sight that greeted her and the other recommended students because it was, well, an obstacle course.
In front of them was a mix of terrains all thrown together including mountain peaks with rope bridges, a waterfall, trees, a lake, mock buildings and a tunnel. To add to it all there were a few arrows that showed the direction that they were to go in.
"The exam is a 3-kilometer obstacle race so that you can't just run, or use a speed Quirk, to get through it as there are plenty of hazards that will be in your way as you go." Present Mic said to them as they were gathered on the starting line ready for it. "Use your Quirks however you like to reach the finish!"
Ruby took a deep breath and steeled herself for what was to come. This was the practical exam, the real test to get into U.A. and it was a race with her Quirk. Now she knew why Ozpin had said that she would be better suited to the recommended exam than the normal one, this king of exam played almost perfectly to her strengths and all her training had really increased her control over her Quirk and how many times she could use it before exhausting herself.
Thanks to that training 3 kilometers, even with obstacles, was nothing to her even with Ruby running parts of it. She had this and she was going to win it to really show off her potential. Then she'd ace her interview and get into U.A., the best Hero School in Japan and become a Huntress just like Yang and her parents.
"On your marks." Present Mic began causing Ruby to really get in the zone as she lowered herself into a distance runner's stance. "Get set and … go!"
On go there was a buzzing sound and Ruby tore off with her Quirk right away. The start of the race was through a winding tunnel that led out to the lake that had to be crossed or circumvented before a rock climb up a cliffside with convenient holds to the top where they had to cross several rope bridges that zigzagged over the area. After that it was an urban path through a few building, down a slide and a final half kilometer straight sprint to the finish line on flat ground. This was nothing, Ruby could do it no problem as she sped through the twists of the tunnel in a red vortex leaving petals behind in her wake.
Meanwhile four of the other 5 students were gaping at the sudden burst of speed that the short girl in black and red had just put on to blast off with the lead. Only Momo Yaoyorozu remained composed after such a speedy start from one of them. She was here to pass the exam and show off her strong Quirk, she would do so regardless and had already started running into the tunnel, a light made on her forehead, following the strange wake of red rose petals that the girl had left behind her as Momo thought on what was needed next.
Still, she had to give it to the other girl, she was good and had really fast reactions. She'd clearly had some training and knew how to activate her Quirk in seconds. Add in that it seemed to make her faster and even grant her a brief moment of flight and, well, it was a really good Quirk and one that would take her far. It also gave Momo the motivation she needed to push herself because she too was here to win and show off her own Quirk's versatility, and her mind's, in the process. She just needed the right moment on the course where her Creation Quirk bested the black and red girl's speed-based Quirk.
Up ahead Ruby had burst out of her Quirk when the limit hit, she still could only use it for about 10 seconds and most and that was in a straight line not bending through a tunnel. She was ready for this though so that as she burst out she took a few more strides and leapt into it again to speed through the rest of the tunnel before coming out once more as she neared the exit. It would be a foolish move to still be in her Petal Burst as she went though the exit as she didn't know what was there and if she hit her limit at the wrong moment it could be really bad for her.
It was a good thing that Ruby did do that as she saw the first interesting part of the course, the lake. The tunnel emerged into the lake feature with the rock wall on the other side directly across the water. That meant that you could either get there by crossing the water if you had a Quirk that could manage it, or you went on the track around it and used your Quirk later on. Well, Ruby was a straightforward kinda gal so she knew her path and backed up a bit for what was next as this would take some slight ingenuity as the gap wasn't one that she could cross in a single burst, so she had to plan her crossing accordingly.
Momo used her time running to make the key creation that would get her through this test, a motorized and collapsible scooter. It was something she could make without much of an issue, the batteries she made for it were strong enough for the test, and she could fold it up and strap it to her back for when she needed to carry it through parts that it wasn't useful for. It was what would win, and she could make it while running thanks to her outfit as she created it from her abdomen she just needed a few moments to finish it as it was rather complex to make.
Once it was ready Momo hopped on and sped off at a speed only slightly slower than the red girl could manage with her Quirk if she had to guess. She'd been over taken by two of the girls with Quirks better suited for running but now with her scooter Momo shot past them and out just in time to see the back of the red girl run right at the lake.
Momo didn't doubt that a girl with a Quirk like hers would take the most direct route that she could. Momo herself could have done so had she wanted to, but it might have taken time and precious lipids that she might need later. As such she conserved her lipids and took the path to the side but kept an eye on the girl would already bursted into a red tornado again and sped across the water on a high arc. Seriously though why the hell did it leave red rose petals behind, that was the one thing that Momo really didn't get about the other girl's Quirk.
Ruby's plan to get across the water was a simple one and slightly inspired by how Blake might do so using her clones in a chain but rather than that she'd use her Petal Burst like that. Ruby knew she'd not make it in one burst, so she leapt off the side of the shore into the air to burst with an upward angle that helped her shoot up and in an arc so that she was a good bit above the water. Then, as she was nearing her limit and at the apex while over hallway across the lake she let her Quirk fall so that she herself reformed and began to fall.
From there it was a simple matter of activating Petal Burst again to shoot forward and down at an angle to the other shore at the base of the wall they had to climb. The whole process took less than half a minute and further increased her lead as she reformed while upright and landed on the other bank, running with her landing to reach the base of the wall and glad that there was enough of a gap for the run or else she might have face planted into the rock before her.
Momo saw all this as she powered her scooter around amazed at the coordination and calmness of the other girl to not only make the crossing with ease but understand her own limitations and plot a course that would allow her to use her Quirk, whatever it was, twice while still in the air. It had taken a bit longer, but it showed tactics as if the girl had gone straight across she'd have, um, reformed Momo guessed based on what she was seeing, and landed in the water. Instead, she'd gone high enough to allow for a few seconds of freefall that was all she needed to activate her Quirk again.
All that had, along with the complete lack of hesitation that the girl had to implement her plan or fear when she was falling through the air, had Momo coming to one conclusion; this girl was from a hero family. There was no way that she wasn't, not with that level of control, composure, and skill she'd shown, and it also explained why she was at the recommended exam to begin with.
To add to it all the girl had reformed, at this point Momo was convinced that the Quirk in question was a transformation class Quirk as there was no way she could move like that without altering her body in the process, upright and landed running to the base of the cliff a good 20 seconds ahead of Momo. She then didn't pause as she reached the base and leapt upwards rather than climb it. As she reached the highest she could jump without a Quirk she spun and shot up with her Quirk in a red tornado to gain even more height.
It didn't quite make the top, but it was well over halfway up and she burst out of her spin still looking up, only falling for a second, a grin clear on her face, before she burst upwards again, not as fast as it wasn't the direction she'd been going in, but her speed picked up and she easily cleared the climb and reformed on the top far enough from the edge to be safe and keep running to the rope bridges without pause. All in all, it had taken her at most 10 seconds to climb it and Momo was damned impressed by that seeing as she wasn't even at the base yet. If that girl kept it up she was going to get into U.A. no problem.
At the top of the mountain Ruby was grinning at how well she'd done but the arrows pointing to the next part was going to an issue, she was at the rope bridge section. Now she'd put a good distance between herself and anyone who might try to overtake her so she could be a bit safer as she made her way onto the rope bridge that swayed as she moved but she was still gunning to win the race, so she pushed on as fast as she dared but with this kind of narrowness and instability she couldn't safely use her Quirk on this part of the course.
The rope bridge went from one mountain top to another and then zigged back to a third behind it where there was a zipline down to the ground and the urban part of the course. As such Ruby had to follow it without using her Quirk, even crossing the gap with her Quirk was too risky given the fall to the ground below, but she had the lead and wouldn't give it up. Of course, she didn't know who was hot on her heels or what that girl could do that would show Ruby how different Quirks handled this course in different ways.
By the time Ruby was halfway across the rope bridge Momo had reached the base of the mountain comfortably in second and with another choice to make. There was a path that wound around the mountain that would take time to go up or you could climb the rock-climbing things set into it though there were no safety harnesses or anything, not that that was an issue to Momo. As the girl in black and red had shown, the easiest way was a straight line and Momo was going to follow that example as she got off her scooter and folded it up before slinging it across her back as fast as she could manage it.
Then she created a special grapple gun with a built-in winch system from her right arm but made sure to leave the grip and the butt incomplete so that it was still fused to her skin as a safety precaution. She then pointed the gun up and fired, she'd made enough cable to easily clear the top as the head slapped into the mountain near the peak and above the ledge where the bridge was. with a flick of her thumb on a switch on the gun Momo shot upwards as the cable was winched in at a speed that was fast enough to get her up to the ledge quickly but not so fast that she'd dislocate her shoulder.
The fasted was as the crow flew and Momo easily made it to the top by the time the girl in red had made it to the end of the other ledge at the midpoint of the bridges. This was a decision for Momo as she had the power to cut it off and she saw that the arrows pointed to either the bridge or the other mountain showing that she could cross the gap between if she dared or had a Quirk for it. Well, she had the latter and she hurried to the edge as she made crampons out of her feet, destroying her socks and shoes in the process but she could remake the latter in a moment.
As soon as she was on the edge she saw that the girl in red had reached the second rope bridge and was on it when she noticed her. Momo just smiled as she fired the gun at the other peak, the winch having yanked it out when she got to the top. The cable again shot across the gap and into the mountain and became taught. With a nod at how it felt secure enough to use, Momo activated the winch and leapt off the edge.
Between the winch and the leap, Momo sped across but knew that she wasn't going to reach the top. As such she bent her knees and leant back so as to let her crampon covered feet slam into the mountain, wincing as she took the blow in her knees but instantly leaping off as she continued to be winched upwards and onto the top of the mountain.
As soon as Momo was on stable ground she finished making the winch and the crampons and left them as she turned to the zip line to the building part, grabbed it and didn't pause as she leapt off speeding down at a controlled angle on the cable provided making herself a new pair of sneakers in the process. She was now in the lead and didn't intent to relinquish it.
"Damn, what the hell is that Quirk?" Ruby muttered as she abandoned caution and leapt forward and into her Quirk to catch up to the girl that had just overtaken her.
She was close enough to cover the distance and she knew it, so she was soon on the final ledge but as she came out of her Quirk she had to run a few paces so was near the edge. Well going down was just as easy as going up for Ruby and she leapt off the edge and into her Quirk again as she shot down the final bit without noticing the left pieces of equipment on the ledge or using the zipline to get down to the ground below.
Thankfully, and for safety reasons, the zipline wasn't long and Ruby was able to just use one burst to get to the end and land on the pavement of the cityscape and run towards the arrow that led them on a bending path through the fake city so that it wasn't a straight shot, the busty girl nowhere to be seen. Ruby didn't let that deter her as she burst forward to cover more distance and sped through the city.
Ahead of her Momo was on her scooter again having pulled it off her back the moment she landed and powering off with it following the arrows telling her where to go. It was a short course, about a kilometer through the city scape as they turned at various blocks to make their way to another tunnel with a slide on the other side.
Momo easily made it to the slide still leading but had to stop at top of the slide to close the scooter again and slide down on her ass, something she had to keep as she couldn't roll with the scooter on her back. That last part slowed her down as she got up and on the scooter again after unfolding it for the final sprint.
This also slowed her down enough for Ruby, who was nearing the max Petal Bursts she could manage, to close the gap and reach the slide as her opponent was getting up at the bottom. Rather than bother sliding down, Ruby just burst once more down to close the distance just like she'd done with the zipline that she'd ignored, arching at the end while near the ground to get more distance before bursting out.
They were on the final sprint, 500 meters to the finish line where Present Mic was with the stopwatch, and Ruby wasn't going to lose in a flat sprint. She was going to win this and get into U.A. and to do so she had to embody what she wanted, she had to go Plus Ultra to beat the other girl. As such she was at a full sprint, her natural speed fast even out of her Quirk, and then after a few strides leapt forward to shoot forward.
Ruby knew that she wouldn't win if she kept it for the max so rather than that she burst out with 200 meters to remain and only 50 meters behind to run a few paces before bursting one last time with everything she had as she focused on what she wanted to fuel her to new heights and speeds. At that she tore forward closing the gap within 75 meters of the finish line as Ruby spun in her vortex and pushed forward with all she got past the girl on a damned motorized scooter of all things, seriously what was her Quirk, and to the finish line as she felt herself hit her limit only to smash through it with her desperation.
She was going to win this, and she put her all into it as the finish line came up and Ruby made one more lunge, the girl on the scooter now going full out herself her head forward, before bursting out her right arm extended her body completely parallel to the ground as they crossed the line neck in neck. She'd given it her all but even then she couldn't tell if she'd won or not, at least not until the announcement was suddenly made right after the girls crossed the finish line.
"And by a hand number 31 has won it!" Present Mic said before looking at his stopwatch app and going bug-eyed at it, the time was 2 and half minutes faster than the average time, only Yoarashi and Todoroki had bested that time so far today.
Present Mic was right, Ruby had won by a hand as her right hand and just past her wrist had crossed before the other girl's head crossed it. Of course, she was still in the air at this before gravity took over and she crashed into the ground hard, rolling instinctively on impact before coming to a stop in a heap panting hard as she rolled over one more time to lie on her back and stare up at the clear blue sky a wide smile on her face at the win.
Momo had been shocked by the final burst of speed the girl had put on to beat her, she thought she had it and she was going flat out on the last part to ensure it, but the other girl had beaten her fair and square before spectacularly crashing right at the end. Instantly Momo stopped the scooter, hopped off it, and headed over to the girl as fast as possible. She had to make sure that she was ok first and second find out who she was because after that performance Momo was certain the girl would be a classmate of hers at the start of the year.
"Hey, are you ok?" Momo asked as she reached the girl to realize that she was not out of breath at all which only added to Momo's assessment of the girl's skill level. "That was quite the tumble at the end, you really went all out."
"I'm ok." Ruby said from the ground surprised that the other girl had come to check up on her, it was a nice thing to do, and Ruby wanted to reassure her that she was fine, but she was still enjoying looking up at the sky as she recovered from using her Quirk so much though at least she wasn't out of breath, but Ruby knew that she should get up, so she slowly pushed herself off the ground. "You'd be surprised how instinctual this becomes when trying to get control over a Quirk like mine."
"It really is something else, I've never seen a speed Quirk quite like yours." Momo said as she reached the girl who was pushing herself off the ground, dusty but otherwise seeming to be ok and bending down to offer her hand to the other girl. "Here, let me help you up just to be sure that you are ok."
"Thanks." Ruby said looking to the hand offered to her and noting that the girl's nails were perfectly manicured though no polish or anything before taking it with her own and looking up at the taller girl. "I appreciate it."
Momo just nodded as she hauled the shorter girl up, but she put a bit too much strength into it as she was taken aback by the color of the other girl's eyes the moment they met because they were a dazzling silver, not gray but straight up silver and shone with their own bright eagerness. That was unusual even in the Quirk society where odd hair colors and eyes had become normal, hell the girl had red tips to her black hair that didn't look dyed, but her eyes were definitely unique to Momo. Regardless Momo heaved her up but staggered back a bit as she did pulling the girl with her.
Ruby let out a little squeak, the girl was a lot stronger than she looked, and she was hauled up a bit too fast to stop pitching forward when the taller girl staggered back from the move where their height difference caused a slight problem for Ruby. That was because Ruby was suddenly heading face first for a spectacular set of tits with no way to stop herself before she was suddenly, and inadvertently, in the other girl's cleavage with an audible boing sound. Thankfully, the girl was wearing a sports bra which allowed for less of an issue but now Ruby was as red as her sports kit as she leapt back as fast as possible.
"I'm so sorry I didn't mean to end up there." Ruby said as she leapt back and stumbled but before she could fall the other girl had grabbed her arm and steadied her. "That was an accident, I swear it."
"Huh, what's the matter?" Momo asked confused. "I should be apologizing, I was distracted by your eyes and pulled you up a little too strongly."
"But I…" Ruby began as she looked up into the taller girl's black eyes and saw that she wasn't embarrassed or upset just confused at what had happened which told her a lot about the taller girl's attitude towards certain thing. "Never mind, it's ok people get like that with my eyes. Apparently silver is a rare color even in this day and age."
While Ruby still hadn't figured this girl out she had deduced one thing about her that made her clearly different to Yang regarding her body. It wasn't that this girl was confident with it, not in the Yang sense at least, but more that she was just too pure and innocent to realize. She had a natural and non-lewd look towards nudity hence her ability to wear so little without feeling embarrassed. Whether it was due to upbringing, her Quirk, or a mix of both Ruby didn't know but it was impressive to meet someone like this though Ruby expected that when the girl met someone who was lewd she'd be very uncomfortable.
"It is." Momo said before suddenly remembering her manners and flushing at her rudeness while the first of the trailing group finished a good 5 minutes after them. "Sorry, I've been rude and not introduced myself. I am Momo Yaoyorozu, hopeful U.A. student and you are?"
"Oh right, I'm Ruby Rose." Ruby said sticking out her hand to Momo. "Nice to meet you Yaoyorozu."
"And you too Rose." Yaoyorozu said with a smile as they shook a little odd though as it wasn't the most Japanese greeting, and her name or appearance weren't Japanese, so Momo had to ask especially because the girl's Japanese was on the level of a native speaker albeit with a slightly odd accent to it that Momo could tell was not from Japan. "Pardon my impertinence but do you mind if I ask about your heritage? It's just your name and the way you greeted me are much more western than I was expecting, as are your features. Again, I apologize for my rudeness on this I am just curious that is all, I mean nothing by it."
"Huh?" Ruby asked as she looked at Yaoyorozu and her odd speech before it hit her, this girl was upper, upper class hence the manner of her speech, her accent, and the question which Ruby didn't mind as she didn't get it that often. "And no, I don't mind that you asked as you are right, I'm half American I guess on my mother's side. I was born here and dad's Japanese, but I got pretty much all of her features, but my mom was American, so I grew up bilingual and as they weren't married I got her family name."
"Ah I see, thank you." Momo said deciding not to ask more as she'd heard Rose use the word was not is when describing her mother and could tell that there was a slight pain in the shorter girl's voice, so she wasn't going to push it and decided to move on to a better question and one she really wanted the answer to. "Do you mind if I ask about your Quirk then? I haven't seen anything like it, a transformation Quirk that gives the user a speed boost with limited flight as well, it's fascinating, on a technical level."
"Sure, I don't mind talking about it if you tell me yours because I have just as many questions about yours as you do mine." Ruby said as the last of the examinees crossed the line and Present Mic told them to head back, shower, change, and then wait for their interview time which was slated for after the practical exams were done. "As for mine, it's called Petal Burst and while I'm not actually sure of the specific mechanics to it the people who tested it after it manifested did classify it as a transformation class Quirk. It's a bit different to my sister who has an emitter class quirk with the stockpiler subclass."
"I see well Quirks can be of different classes if the parents are such." Momo said as they began to walk back to the changing room. "As for mine, it is called Creation and basically I can create any inorganic item using the lipids in my body, but I have to understand the item on a molecular level to do so as my lipids turn into new molecules whenever I create something. The items are permanent by the way, and I have no limit to the complexity so long as I understand what I am making so it is a powerful Quirk, but I have a hard limit due to the finite amount of lipids that the human body has. This restriction is also why I can't replicate Schnee Dust because the molecular structure of it is a closely guarded trade secret."
"Still, that is an amazing Quirk and to be able to master and apply it, you must have a phenomenal mind." Ruby said excitedly as she thought on the nature of such a Quirk and already she was seeing why Yaoyorozu had received a recommendation though she was disappointed about the Dust aspect as that could have been really useful. "Just to know so many molecular structures so that you can make them quickly. It must have taken years to master."
"I have a near photographic memory so yes I am perfectly suited for my Quirk, and it is why I want to be a hero, to use it to help people but you are right it took many years to get the hang of it." Momo said with a smile. "Just as I bet yours did because you've clearly trained your Quirk well. I saw you on the course, it pushed me to be faster and take a few risks, because you clearly have a lot of control over it. To be able to burst into that speed thing in such quick order with such precise movements and have no fear when in the air, well I can see why you are taking this exam and not the normal one."
"Thanks, I had some great teachers who helped me focus when I got the recommendation to take this exam." Ruby said blushing at the complement though she still felt uneasy about her recommendation. "That made me really focus on it as before I relied more on my weapon rather than my Quirk which supplemented my fighting style with it."
"Weapon?" Momo asked surprised at the reference, but her brain easily put it all together, she did have a good friend on that track from a family even more prestigious than hers and who was defying her father by applying to U.A. and not Shiketsu where that family traditionally went and taking the normal exam to boot. "You're a Huntress candidate aren't you?"
"How'd you know?" Ruby asked her eyes wide at that completely forgetting her mention of the word weapon.
"One of my friends is on that path, her family has a history of being Hunters and Huntresses so she's following in their shoes this year as well." Momo said. "Though she's decided to take the regular exam not the recommended one and not go to her family's alma matter either which I really respect."
"Why?" Ruby asked. "I realized during the exam that this was suited to my talents than the normal one might be."
"That is true and same here." Momo said. "As good as Creation is, the limitations and complexity of it means that this exam was better suited to showing off my talents and potential as a hero. My dad is a U.A. alum and he knew that the regular entrance exam doesn't always do the best job at testing hero Quirks like ours though I have heard that they are trying to rectify that issue."
"I've heard that as well from my sister and her friend." Ruby said. "They took the regular exam and got into U.A., they met in the exam actually, and Yang pointed out that I was better for this though she wouldn't say why so that I didn't have any advantages and now that I've taken the practical I can see her reasoning behind it."
"Yang?" Momo asked knowing the name and everything clicked into place as to why this girl was so good. "As in Yang Xiao Long? The U.A. second year Sports Festival Champion this year? She won over Nora Valkyrie if I recall. Both are on the Huntress path. She's your sister?"
"Yup and both my parents went to U.A. as well." Ruby said with a nod. "That's actually where they met and why I want to be a Huntress like them. I was planning on taking the regular exam when something happened that led to me getting a recommendation, I, um, don't think I can go into the exact situation though."
"No recommendations are confidential so I wouldn't ask how you came by yours." Momo said shaking her head though that hadn't actually been the reason why Ruby had been hesitant, but she didn't bother to correct Yaoyorozu on it. "Just, um, the family name thing. Again, I don't want to be impertinent or rude it's just not something I'm used to experiencing."
"That's fine I am sure I'll get some questions when it comes out that Yang's my big sister, though I will not be bringing it up if I get in as I'd like to make my own way." Ruby said. "As for the name, Yang is technically my half-sister, we have the same dad but different moms, hence the whole different last name and that's all I'll say on the matter."
"I understand on all fronts and know you won't be the only one who won't be trading on a family name if you get in, which I am sure you will after that performance." Momo said as they began to near the building. "I've heard that at least one really high-profile hero's son is applying through recommendations though I don't know who the hero is just yet. I do know that two of my friends taking the exam today are from one of the top two Quirk Knight families and both have siblings to live up too, well one does."
"Wait Quirk Knights?" Ruby asked as she recalled what her sister and Blake had said a while back during her training for this exam. "Which family? My sister explained how that system worked, at least before more than just the traditional upper-class families went into that branch, so I've heard of them a bit."
"The Vermillions." Momo said. "House Vermillion as they like to be called, along with Houses Silva and Kira who are the other big houses in that area of the hero world here in Japan. They all travel in the same circles as my parents, so I know the ones who are our age well, same with some of the other ones but for various reasons I know the Vermillions the best as they're the ones with the ties to U.A. while the Silvas are a Shiketsu family."
"I recall hearing that." Ruby said. "Though I've never heard of House Kira."
"They're on the same level in terms of social status though rarely send members to the Quirk Knights." Momo said as they entered the changing rooms. "They were instrumental in the formation though and often the high-ranking family members serve in the administrative and oversight branches of the Quirk Knights which work closely with the HPSC to govern their actions."
"Ah ok." Ruby said recalling that there had been two people with Yaoyorozu earlier. "But the Vermillions are here today you said. I think I saw them, twins, right? No, that doesn't feel right, I think their relation isn't sibling but my sister and her friend told me about them only once and it was in the middle of a training session several months back so I can't properly remember."
"You are right there; Leo and Mimosa are actually cousins not twins." Momo said causing Ruby to blink at that and Momo to chuckle. "We've been family friends for years so it's natural for me and Mimosa to be on a first name basis and Leo, well he's got the primary line's traditional fire-based Quirk and he's as passionate about becoming a Quirk Knight, even aiming to be the Wizard King one day just as his elder brother is but with a lot of his sister's wilder side in him so he insisted that I call him Leo once we found out we'd be rivals for the 10 spots here. I hope they make it but I'm certain that the number has fallen to 8, possibly less if the rumors of who is applying as well are true, after that race. Providing we don't mess up our interviews."
"We?" Ruby asked surprised as all that Yaoyorozu had said to her sank in at last as there was a lot to digest. "You think I've gotten a spot?"
"Rose, I had a timer on me to see how fast we did it in." Momo said as she pulled it out of her pocket to show Ruby. "I made it before the race and started it when we reached the starting line so the time is a little off but even with the added seconds it was a fast time, a time that can only be achieved by the use of good and smart applications of Quirks during a 3k race under those conditions. So long as you don't bomb your interview then you will get in. Anyone who can do what you did in that race won't fail the written exam, that takes practical knowledge of physics on an advanced level, and I did say I know Huntress candidates as well I know how you lot are, you make your own weapons after all."
"Um well thanks." Ruby said unsure what to say to the thorough analysis she'd just received. "And I don't intend to bomb my interview though I am not sure about the interviewer, I'm a relatively aware of Professor Oobleck is and he's the one assigned to me."
"I'm not aware of who he is." Momo admitted as she began to strip at her locker with absolutely no shame, pulling off her sports bra and giving Ruby a full, eye level, shot of her assets that made Ruby a little envious and she wasn't exactly under developed in that department herself. "I've got mine with Midnight coming up."
"Oobleck Huntsman hero that my dad knows a bit from the old days who went into teaching a few years ago though he still works as a Huntsman from time to time depending on the situation." Ruby said as she pulled off her jacket and turned to face her locker, she was fine with nudity amongst her own gender thanks to how open Japan was about it but still Yaoyorozu's girls could make anyone jealous and self-conscious. "He's a bit eccentric if I recall, Yang's had some training with him and Professor Port as they're the staff Huntsmen here and she said that it was rather unorthodox."
"Well, it makes sense that you'd get a Huntsman as your interviewer seeing as you are on the path." Momo said as she grabbed a towel from her bag, her policy on stream of commerce meant that she'd not make one unless absolutely necessary. "Though who the Quirk Knight interviewer is I don't know. I'll ask Mimosa later."
"I just hope this goes well." Ruby said as she finished stripping and trying to not feel small in a lot of ways next to Yaoyorozu as they headed to the showers.
"It will, you're a smart girl Rose, and you have talent as you wouldn't be here without it." Momo said. "Just be yourself and it will be fine."
Ruby just nodded, not that Momo saw as they got into the shower stalls and began washing in silence. She was nervous but after words of encouragement from a fellow candidate, one she'd beaten but who was still being nice and thought she had a shot, well Ruby's confidence went up as she washed herself. She was ready for the interview now and she was sure that she would ace it.
Dr., he was very insistent on that front before she'd even said hello to him, Oobleck was, well, as strange a man as Yang had said he was. Ruby was sitting opposite him back in her school uniform with her hands in her lap fidgeting slightly as she studied him across the desk in his office while he looked over her applicant file. He was familiar, she was sure that she'd seen him around Patch or Vale, but clearly it wasn't enough to worry the administrators that she'd need another interviewer. Still, it was a little off putting that this was the man who would interview her.
The man was, well, a ball of caffeinated energy on a level Ruby could only hope to achieve as he drank a swig of coffee from a large green and silver thermos that Ruby had a feeling was more than just a thermos, as he continued to read whatever the file at high speed. Ruby was as patient as she could be as Dr. Oobleck read but she couldn't help but look around nervously as she waited to try and calm her mind by taking in the man's office.
The office was a mess with papers everywhere, his various degrees on the walls, and an eclectic selection of junk that looked like it was from the past and by past Ruby was sure that it was from before the advent of Quirks. Then again his office had said that he was the world and pre-Quirk history teacher so that actually made sense.
Dr. Oobleck himself was just as messy and disorganized as his office was it seemed. He had wild green hair that stood on end, bright blue eyes, and a pale complexion as if he hadn't seen the sun in a while. He wore a pair of circular, frameless, glasses over his face, a simple but rumpled white button-down shirt with the collar popped, a yellow tie that was wonky and not done all the way up thus showing that the undone top button was undone and slacks. He was very much the picture of the caffeinated academic despite being a notable Huntsman in his own right.
"Right, everything is in order, and I've looked over both your transcripts from Signal and Ozpin's recommendation of you, including that little incident in Vale that got him to notice you." Oobleck said suddenly quickly causing Ruby to jump and look at him as he put down her file. "And it is clear you are an excellent candidate on paper. High marks at Signal in both academic fields relating to Huntress work like the sciences and math, though your history scores a bit low, as well as strong combat scores with notes on using your Quirk as an extension of your fighting style. Plus, you've mastered a scythe, a tough weapon to master, and that you it used correctly in that incident, so you know how to handle yourself."
"Um thank you Dr." Ruby said on her best behavior and making sure to use his correct title but not sure what else to add to that.
"Also, there are no red flags in your background or what not so this is more a formality than anything else, the real weight in your application and scores will be on the practical given how most Huntresses don't use their Quirks all too much though a fair few do utilize them in their fighting styles." Oobleck said continuing as if he hadn't heard anything from Ruby which she could believe seeing as he was still looking down at her file. "But that does beg the one key question I have for you Miss Rose. Why do you want to be a Huntress?"
Ruby blinked at that as she looked at the man opposite her who finally looked up, he glasses covered eyes meeting hers. It was a surprising question to ask even with her on the Huntress path, but as she met Oobleck's gaze with a firm one of her own she already had the answer as she'd long answered that question to herself.
"I want to help people, to protect them be it from creatures of Grimm or villains who wish to do them harm, to be their hero while asking for nothing in return from them." Ruby said seriously. "Just like my mom was, and my dad is and what Yang will be. I want to be the person who, when she arrives on a scene the people know that they are safe, that the Grimm will be driven back, or the villains taken down and brought to justice. I've wanted to be a Huntress for as long as I can remember, at least since before my Quirk manifested, since before I could begin to train and then when I could I trained like mad to master Crescent Rose and be the Huntress that I wanted to be. Even for this exam I trained my Quirk like I'd never trained it before to master it for this shot at U.A. that the recommended exam gave me."
"I see, yes just as I thought Miss Rose." Oobleck said as he looked down at her transcripts and the recommendation by Ozpin once again, the action hiding the grin on his face at her answer as it was what he'd expected from her. "That's all I have for you; I'll write up my report and submit it to Principal Nezu with your scores. You'll get the results of the exam in a week or so, shortly before the normal entrance exam should you end up needing to take that one instead. Do you have any questions for me?"
"Um, er, yeah." Ruby said blinking as she asked the only things still on her mind. "Why was this so short?"
"Because you're an exceptional candidate who answered the important question that I ask all Huntsmen and Huntress candidates who are in the recommended exam without the need for any follow up questions which is a rarity for me." Oobleck said. "All interviewers have their own way of doing things and some are more important than others for various reasons. None of those reasons showed up on your records so this was nice and short. If that is all you are dismissed and may go home. Best of luck Miss Rose, regardless of what happens I am sure that you will make a great Huntress one day."
"Th, thank you." Ruby said unsure what else to say before she rose, bowed formally to the teacher who nodded back, grabbed her bag and left his office.
Ruby wasn't sure how to feel about the interview, but it seemed like it had gone well so that was good. Now though it was just the waiting game for her results to see if she had gotten in or if she'd have to reapply through the normal exam. This was going to be one hell of a wait.
"Ruby, they're here!" Her father Tai said opening the door to her room in their house on Patch with an envelope with something in it in his hand and the U.A. crest imprinted in wax on the back. "The results of your recommended exam have arrived."
"What?" Ruby asked as she looked from the letter to her father and back again. "Really?"
"Yup just came, same kind of envelope as Yang as they do things high tech at U.A. these days" Tai said handing Ruby the letter that she took with trembling fingers feeling something hard inside it. "Um, I'll leave you alone for the results."
"Right, thanks dad." Ruby said as her father walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.
Ruby had been at her desk working on the latest upgrade she was planning for Crescent Rose when her father had come in, so she just turned back to the letter on her desk. She'd been waiting a week for this nervously but now that it was actually here she was hesitant to open it.
After the exam she'd gone back to Yang's and waited for her sister and Blake to come back from a patrol that they were on to tell them about it over one of Yang's amazing dinners. Yang had thought that it had gone well but Ruby was naturally nervous about it. Still, she had done as well as she could have on the written and she'd won her race with a really good time, so she was sure that all that had worked out. It was her interview that had worried her due to how short it had been, but those things were all hit or miss in the end.
Her sister and Blake had done their best, but Ruby would be a bundle of nerves, so she'd headed back to Patch the day after the exam where she tried to distract herself with training, playing with Zwei, and upgrades for her sweetheart but she always had that nagging thought in her mind about the exam. Nothing she could do could really assuage her worries, but she'd done her best to occupy her mind while she waited.
Now, though, she had her results, and she knew that she shouldn't hesitate to look at them. A Huntress wouldn't in the field so she wouldn't now as she picked it up, broke the seal, and pulled out a silver metal disk with some prongs on it and a dip in the middle that would tell her if she got into U.A. or not while completely missing the paperwork that had accompanied the disk in the envelope. Placing it on her desk, Ruby rolled her chair back a bit as a projection of a screen appeared with Dr. Oobleck on it though at least now he had his tie properly done.
"Hello Miss Rose." Oobleck said to the screen. "I will keep this as brief as possible as I am sure that you are nervous as you wait on your results but I do have to explain how we grade our recommended candidates so you understand it and as one of the two Huntsmen teachers I do the results for all Huntsmen and Huntress candidates as I can do them quickly without going into long rants about personal stories. We've learned our lesson from that incident after all."
Ruby didn't get what that was about, but it seemed to mean that Professor Port, the other Huntsman on U.A.'s full time staff was a bit long winded. Now that she recalled the name she did remember how Yang hated taking Grimm fighting classes with him so there had to be something there.
"Anyway, we grade on a 3-part system with various weights given to different parts." Oobleck said causing Ruby to switch back to the projection before her as she couldn't exactly pause the recording, so she had to focus on it. "First the written exam, which you passed with the 12th highest score by the way and second highest in the math and physics parts of the test, then the practical and finally the interview. The last is mainly for candidates with unusual Quirks that would work well but need more analysis while the practical is the real meat of the exam and tests more than just how fast you can complete the course, though that is a factor, but also tests how you use your Quirk during it."
That all made sense to Ruby, and she was already feeling a bit better as she'd passed the written, not top 10 but the other stuff could push her up to that cutoff mark, and the practical was something she knew she'd done well in. The interview was still what she was worried about.
"As for your application." Oobleck continued after a breath. "Your interview was a formality, I just needed to know that what your recommendation said and the footage I'd seen on you regarding that incident in Vale matched up with your mentality which it did. As such you scored a perfect score on the interview but given the other factors it didn't mean much in your application as it did for other candidates, for you it would be used if there was a close call and that is all."
That also made sense to Ruby as she nervously waited for the practical feedback. All this was bad, but she was pushing through it because she knew she had to.
"Finally, the practical exam." Oobleck said adjusting his glasses. "Your time was the third fastest of all the students who applied, and 9th fastest ever recorded over that particular course. In addition, you used your Quirk with a clear head and in the best way possible given the obstacles that were in your away while also showing restraint when it might have been too dangerous to use your Quirk. Given all that, how can a Hero Course not accept such a qualified candidate."
It took Ruby a moment to process what was said. She'd aced the practical even faster than she'd expected and been praised for her use of her Quirk during it but more importantly she'd been accepted, at least that's what it sounded like, and her eyes went wide, and her mouth fell open at that news.
"Therefore, it is my honor to welcome you to U.A. high school should you accept this offer." Oobleck continued as a screen appeared showing 10 names. "Only 10 students actually met the required threshold score once all factors were taken into account so all 10 have been offered a place as a student at U.A. for those who are admitted through recommendations. As you can see Miss Rose, you placed 4th of the 10 who were admitted so allow me to be the first to welcome you to the hero academia."
The message ended there as Ruby gaped at the results that remained displayed before her. She didn't understand the scores in the 3 columns and totals, those were done by a formula that was beyond her understanding, but she did understand that her name was there in the 4th slot. Above her was, from first to third, Inasa Yoarashi, Shoto Todoroki and Momo Yaoyorozu so at least Ruby knew that the girl she'd met had gotten in as well and the difference between them was that the girl had the top written score thus putting her above Ruby in the overall scores.
Below Ruby were the 6 other new classmates she'd have providing all of them accepted the offer of enrollment that U.A. had just extended to them. In 5th was someone called Juzo Honenuki followed by Leopold Vermillion in 6th, Setsuna Tokage in 7th, Mimosa Vermillion in 8th, Oscar Pine in 9th and Hitoshi Shinso in 10th.
They would be joining Ruby at U.A. and it finally hit her as she let out a cheer of joy at the results. She'd done it, she'd gotten into U.A. and now she was on her first step to becoming a Huntress. That meant that it was time to celebrate as she pulled open the door and rushed out to tell her dad the news and begin preparations for her matriculation to U.A.'s Hero Course.
So, Ruby has gotten in via the recommended exam making her the first of the major characters to get in and she did it in classic Ruby style. MHA doesn't really have much on this exam just a brief flashback during Todoroki and Yoarashi's pissing contest during the provisional exam which mentioned a written test, showed a glimpse of the practical, and then mentioned the interview afterwards so I used that to flesh out the exam for Ruby and had Oobleck ask Ruby the same question that he asked Yang, Blake, and Weiss in Volume 2 to serve as the interview as he didn't ask Ruby that question back then. There was little to go on for what the obstacle race the recommended students had to face as we only saw it at a glance and most of it during was just Todoroki and Yoarashi neck in neck, so I used what I saw and improvised. As y'all can see, the other accepted students are the ones you'd expect from MHA with the addition of Shinso to round out numbers and of course the two Vermillions and Oscar as well to round out the top 10. There is of course a little nugget, a tease if you will, between this chapter and the first one but y'all will have to wait until chapter 5 to see it all come full circle. Other than that there really isn't much more to say about this Ruby centric chapter, next up is the main test so I am sure y'all are eager to see how that one plays out so stay tuned as it is well on track to come out soon.
