Here is the seventh chapter in this series released in keeping with my self-imposed upload schedule for this series. Introductions are over which means that it is time for one thing, a good old fashioned Quirk Assessment Test with of course a nice little Aizawa staple thrown in so there isn't anything more to say here on what is to come. That is all the administrative stuff I have for y'all however there is a guest review that posed a question that I will respond to now. Do keep the reviews and PMs coming as I always like hearing how much y'all are enjoying my work.
To AutoHunterj49 (guest), no I have not. I am aware of it as it has been recommended to me in the past, but I never got around to it.
Anyway, that is it for this shorter than normal pre-chapter note which means that it is time to sit back and enjoy the seventh chapter in Black RWBY Academia.
Disclaimer: I own nothing related to these three great franchises.
Chapter 7: Assessing Class 1-A
"A Quirk assessment test?" Most of the class asked in confusion as they gathered in the Quirk testing area now wearing their U.A. PE kits having changed and come here on their homeroom teachers orders though at least one of them had a different question to ask.
"But Mr. Aizawa, what about orientation?" Ochaco asked as the class stared at their homeroom teacher with a mix of shock, surprise or just general apathy to what was about to happen. "We're going to miss it, aren't we?"
"If you want to make the big leagues you can't waste time on pointless ceremonies." Aizawa said in a bored tone to gasps from some of the students though some like Asta didn't even know what the whole orientation thing was, so it was lost on him while others just didn't care that they were missing it. "This is a much more productive use of our time."
"Makes sense." Weiss said quietly to Momo and Noelle who were with her. "We are training to be heroes regardless of track, why should we bother to be at an orientation that is more for the other courses than ours. It's not like it's important or that we're going to get chucked off a cliff at it or something."
"Shush Weiss." Momo whispered though she did wonder where the whole cliff thing came from. "I'm listening."
"Here at U.A. we're not tethered to traditions like other schools." Aizawa continued ignoring the small bits of chatter as he kept talking, if they missed what he said then it was their own fault. "That means that I get to run my class however I see fit, with one caveat for today that I have to abide by."
"Huh?" Several members of the class asked confused by that but again Aizawa just continued with what he had to say to his class.
"Most of you have been taking standardized tests at every stage of your life but you never got to use your Quirks in physical exams before and the one of you who hasn't been standardize tested had a late Quirk manifestation anyway." Aizawa said holding up his phone to show the list of physical tests that he had planned for them. "The country is still trying to pretend that we're all created equal by not letting those with the most power excel. It is not rational, and you can bet that villains won't care about this."
Aizawa paused here to take a breath and let what he'd said sink in for a moment. There was a little chatter at that but for the most part silence which was good. The class was already learning and understanding the situation in the world as they should if they wanted to be heroes.
"One day they will learn but not while you are here so I will do it instead." Aizawa said when he was ready before looking to Bakugo. "Now, Bakugo, you got the most villain points on the entrance exam, so you've got the best combat handle on your Quirk of the non-recommended students. What was the farthest distance you could throw a softball in Junior High?"
"Around 67 meters give or take I don't recall specifics." Bakugo said.
"Ok that was clearly without your Quirk." Aizawa said chucking a special softball with an electronic scorer on it at Bakugo who instinctively caught it. "Stand in that circle and now throw it as far as you can with your Quirk."
"Sure." Bakugo said with a shrug as he walked to the circle.
"Anything goes just stay in the circle." Aizawa said as he walked. "Don't waste my time with this."
"Alright." Bakugo said as he stretched a bit, gripping the ball tightly to increase his sweat on it and in his right palm as he backed up to the edge of the circle before stepping forward to blast the ball as far as he could and drop their jaws with how far he could throw it with his Quirk. "DIE!"
The result was as expected from Izuku who knew Bakugo though it still shocked him while the rest of the class, well most of them, just stared at the massive explosion that came from Bakugo's hand and blasted the ball almost immediately out of sight. It was certainly impressive even on those who'd not seen Bakugo's entrance exam, which was most of them.
"Well, that does explain the villain points." Weiss said only slightly shocked by the power and more so by the word Bakugo had used at the end which continued to show how he wouldn't make a good hero if he had that kind of attitude. "If he has a handle on his Quirk then I can see why he got that many points."
"Damn, that's a scary Quirk." Ruby muttered. "Even Yang's doesn't do that."
"Cool." Asta said with a grin and wondering how his sword would handle it.
"All of you need to know your maximum capabilities coming into this course." Aizawa said to the class as Bakugo grinned at what he'd done though no one saw this. "You are to go all out with your Quirks in this exam and used them above all else to pass the tests so that I know what your baseline is and can see how you use your Quirks. This is the most rational way of figuring out your potential as a pro hero."
At that he showed the results and Bakugo had launched the ball 705.2 meters with the blast. That cause most to gasp, it was an absurd distance to throw a ball even with a Quirk and really did show his potential as a hero, to most of them at least as Weiss was still convinced that his mentality wasn't right to be a hero.
"Are you kidding me, over 700 meters?" A blond boy with a black lighting bolt in his hair called Denki Kaminari said his eyes wide. "That's insane!"
"I wanna have a go!" A pink skinned and haired girl with horns on her head, who Nero had already had to avoid as she'd come up to Nero when she entered the class that morning and declared them horn sisters, called Mina Ashido said excitedly. "That looks like fun."
"This is what I'm talking about, finally we're using our Quirks." A black-haired boy with clearly mutant elbows called Hanta Sero said with a smile. "We can use them as much as we want. This is why I came to U.A."
"So, this looks fun then?" Aizawa asked his class in a deadly serious voice that instantly got their attention and cut any of their fun right off with his look. "You have three years to become a hero no matter which track you end up taking and you think that it's all gonna be fun and games all the time?"
There was a pause as Aizawa let his words sink in for a moment. This was the real fun part of his test, for him at least, and he already had a target in mind to really rest today.
"Idiots." Aizawa said as he grinned at them in a way that made none of them feel reassured in the slightest. "Today you'll compete in eight physical tests to gage your potential to be heroes. Whoever comes in last has none and will be expelled. Immediately."
That got the intended reaction from his students, a loud wail of shock and fear. It was just the start he liked to see from his students, and now all he had to do was wait for the right moment to deal with the one kid in his class he needed to deal with. There was one he couldn't do this with, however, but he'd make that clear from the start as well so that she knew the situation she was in as well as it might motivate her to prove herself or at least try to get her Quirk under control.
"Like I said, I get to decide how this class runs as its teacher." Aizawa said as he noted the two in the class with no Quirk control were already nervous, one openly freaking out the other not showing it but for her eyes which were filled with a mix of anger, indignation, fear, and sadness at what to come which was a strange mix. "Understand because if that's a problem all but one of you can head home right now. One of you can't leave and while you're the only one I can't expel, Silva, I can rank you second to last and single you out as the special case in the class."
That really got everyone and those who knew the girl, which was basically all as the Silva look was one of the most distinctive looks in the hero world, looked to the silver haired girl who was trying to look stoic, but her fists were clenched at her sides at her teacher's words. She was shaking with impotent rage as she knew that there was nothing that she could do about this.
This was because Noelle hated being singled out like this, it reminded her of how her family had treated her as a failure because of her lack of Quirk control and how her mother had died shortly after her birth, but she also knew that she had no recourse but to deal with it. She was here as Nezu's special exemption to the entrance tests, that meant that she couldn't drop out, she couldn't be expelled, and she had to finish the course while dealing with any other rules such as the fact that she could only join one Quirk Knight squad and it was the worst of the worst squads because that was all she was fit for.
"You can't do that on our first day here." Ochaco suddenly said which Noelle, while clearly telling that the girl was about as low class as they came with that accent, well she had to be above that insect who'd dared speak to her that morning but still very low class, Noelle couldn't help but agree with. "Even if it wasn't the first day, that's not fair."
"Oh, and natural disasters and power hunger villains are?" Aizawa asked the brunette girl. "What about catastrophic accidents that wipe out whole cities or mutations in Quirk experimentation and enhancement drugs that lead to monstrosities? How about the creatures of Grimm that roam the nation? Are they fair?"
Aizawa paused as he looked at the brunette for a moment. He'd watched the entry footage on all his students, and she had some potential and a good handle on her Quirk, she just needed to understand how the world they lived in worked to really excel and in a Hero Course that would come sooner than later.
"No none of those are fair because the world is full of unfairness especially now that we live in a Quirk society." Aizawa continued after a moment. "It is a hero's job to do everything he or she can to combat that unfairness so if you want to be a pro be it as a normal hero, a Huntress, or a Quirk Knight, you are going to have to push yourself to the brink and then past it to be successful. To achieve this U.A. will throw one terrible hardship after another at you for the next three years so that you go beyond, plus ultra-style to ensure it. Now, show me that it is no mistake that you are here."
That got to them and the whole class was now motivated. Some didn't agree with this style of teaching, some were even more psyched to top the board, and some were determined not to come last, but all were ready.
"Now we're just wasting time with all this talking." Aizawa said. "Let the games begin. You will be assessed solely on how you use your Quirk to achieve the highest score you can possibly. We start with the 50-meter dash."
Aizawa led them over to the area ready for the test to see and he'd already selected the first two for it to really assess speed in the class, and of course see who was faster to start the year. However, before he could say anymore there was a very loud.
"Mr. Aizawa sir." Asta's loud voice called out getting attention from everyone. "What if we have a Quirk that cannot be tested in such normal ways? What do we do?"
"Asta, right, just Asta?" Aizawa asked the boy who nodded. "I read your reports, you're the home-schooled orphan who's Quirk manifested 10 months ago."
"That is correct, sir." Asta said. "And my power…"
"Is interesting but not unique." Aizawa said knowing full well what it was, and it was by far the Quirk he really wanted to test but he didn't want it to be revealed just yet so that the class could learn to deal with surprising and unknown Quirks in real time. "However, I do know that you can't use it in any of these tests so instead you are to show me that you can achieve above average scores for non-Quirk use as physical strength is important as well. In fact, I expect you to have the highest in all the tests compared to those others who cannot use Quirks, is that understood?"
"Yes sir." Asta said loudly.
"That said I will be testing your Quirk today and I'll be doing it personally." Aizawa said surprising the whole class at that though Asta wasn't worried about it. "I will let you know when that comes. You are in luck; I am perhaps the only person who can test your Quirk's efficiency correctly so don't let me down."
"I won't sir." Asta said loudly though he didn't know what his teacher was saying about being the only person who could test his Quirk.
"Good now the first two up." Aizawa said with another evil looking grin. "Ruby Rose and Tenya Ida."
That was going to be interesting to any who knew them both, which was just Momo at the moment though with Ida it was more his family's reputation than him personally, but all could see the engines in Ida's calves so clearly he had a speed-based Quirk. Those who were in his exam also knew this for a fact so they were eager to see how fast he could do as he set himself up in the blocks in one lane while Ruby did the same in the lane next to him smiling as she did.
"The Ida family is known for its Engine Quirk, isn't it." Weiss said to Momo as they first runners set in. "One of the fastest out there if I recall. They pride themselves on their speed, to them the best heroes are those who can do so fastest. Hawks has a similar mentality if I recall though he's slower than Ingenium but with more versatility."
"They are." Momo said with a nod. "Straight speed has always been the Ida family way. Ingenium's engines are in his elbows not his legs. I know that he can get to top speed really quickly, but I think he has a limit that Ida here doesn't have."
"Then we know who will win this." Weiss said. "Whatever Quirk Rose has it can't top a Quirk designed for pure speed though with speed does come power as well."
"Just watch." Momo said, she was too nice to gamble on it. "I think you might be surprised."
"Runners on your marks, ready…" The robot doing the timing for this said as Weiss just rolled her eyes, there was no way that the short, unprofessional seeming, girl who'd run into her could beat the Ida family Quirk in a foot race as the two runners took their ready stances. "Go."
At that there was a gunshot and Ida shot out of the blocks going as fast as he could as he quickly cycled through his gears ready to impress everyone even if he could only reach third gear in this short of a distance. That was the difference between his brother and him. Tensei could get up to top speed faster in an instance because he didn't have gears in his engine, but Tenya did which meant it took him more time but theoretically he would have a faster top speed one day.
All that meant that Ida was the fastest in the class and he knew it. This was his test, and he was going to prove it. At least that was until he was just over halfway through the sprint when a blue and white blur in the form of what looked like a horizontal tornado shot past him as it sent red rose petals all around it for some reason. Ida didn't let it district him, but his eyes were wide as the blur past the finish line ahead of him only to reform into Ruby Rose as she skidded on her black combat boots on the ground to avoid falling over after reforming though why she wore boots and not sneakers confused Ida.
"Runner 1, 2.87 seconds." The robot chimed as the runners finished so close to each other this was the only way to give the results. "Runner two, 3.04 second."
Everyone in the class but Momo were staring wide eyed at the result, even Aizawa was a little taken aback. He'd read the scores on Ruby Rose, she was one of his three recommended students, but to see the Quirk in action and that it was faster than Ida's Engine Quirk was something else. Her speed wouldn't help her in every test but to have such speed and enough control to receive a recommendation, and from a man like Ozpin no less, it explained why she'd gotten in and set the record for girls on the obstacle course not that anyone had told her that much.
"What was that?" Weiss asked as she recovered and looked to Momo who was just smiling. "You knew I take it?"
"I did say she was in my race for the recommended exam." Momo said with a smile as Ruby trotted back over to the group and beamed at her result as there was basically no way anyone would top it given how the first race had been between the two fastest in the class. "Petal Burst, that's her Quirk, and no I don't know how it works all I know is that its transformation class and allows her to move at a high rate of speed with limited flight for a short distance, apparently over 50 meters at least. That's how she beat me, she used it to both cross a lake and scale a mountain thus cutting out certain obstacles in the race with ease. I did say she was a recommended student after all, and that does mean something."
Weiss just grumbled at that as the next two, Ochaco Uraraka and Tsuyu Asui went with Tsu using her frog Quirk to record a respectable time of 5.58 seconds and Ochaco making her clothes and shoes lightweight to record a 7.15 second score. It was basically slightly faster than she would have without it but still a use of her Quirk to achieve it and show that it did help increase her speed even if it wasn't by much. She seemed pleased as she released it and said as much as she came back as it was faster than her junior high time which showed how her Quirk did affect it.
Next up was Weiss against Mashirao Ojiro, an unassuming normal looking blond boy with a prehensile tail that acted like another limb. Weiss of course didn't care who she was facing and just took her place so that as soon as the gunshot went she rushed off on her glyphs to accelerate her speed as she tore through the 50 meters as fast as she could to record a time of 3.42 seconds which was certainly impressive. This was followed by Ojiro using his tail to boost his speed by hitting the ground with it to travel and scoring a 5.49.
Next up they watched a flashy half French boy called Yuga Aoyama who added French to his Japanese face off against Mina Ashido. He was wearing a belt around his waist and over his shirt for some reason and added more confusion by facing backwards as he waited for the starting gun.
The moment he heard the gunshot he leapt up and fired off a laser from his belly button and through the belt, which explained said belt, to fly through the air. By contrast, Mina, who'd taken off her shoes, just created a path of acid from her feet to lesson the friction on the ground and slide along them to increase her speed.
The result was that Mina beat Aoyama though that was mainly because his laser didn't last the full 50 meters and he crashed to the ground, so he had to get up and redo it to score a time of 5.51 seconds which was only slightly slower than Mina's time of 5.37 seconds. Clearly Aoyama couldn't shoot it forever though he could do so in rapid succession, and according to him it made his stomach upset in the process.
This revelation was a little disturbing to the class. However, Aizawa found that really useful as Aoyama had given it his all which meant he'd tested his upper limit and allowed Aizawa to know what the boy could and couldn't do so that he could begin to get over his limitations, that was after all the goal with the test after all. Pros had to be creative to succeed at times so this was important and next up was Midoriya and Bakugo which had Aizawa's full attention.
In this race Bakugo showed that he wasn't just about power as he used his explosions in rapid succession to accelerate himself and get a time of 4.13, slower than what Aizawa had expected and clearly not a good one for the explosive boy as he was now 4th in the class but it was still a good use of his Quirk. Midoriya on the other hand ran it without a Quirk being used for 7.02 seconds which Aizawa could use for the others who wouldn't be using a Quirk in their run as well.
Bakugo knew that he'd do well as his Quirk was versatile, the most versatile in his mind, and he knew how to use it but to him Deku was pathetic. Meanwhile Izuku was mainly focused on mastering control of his Quirk just like All Might had suggested but he still couldn't figure out how to do that.
This stuff was not known to Aizawa who just moved the test along to record the times of the others. Next up was Asta and Rikido Sato who took some sugar before the run and then recorded a sub 5 second time while Asta without a Quirk ran a 6.55 which was solid and would end up being faster than others who didn't use their Quirk in the test as Aizawa expected.
The rest of it went fine with various scores from the class depending on their Quirks and how they used them. Nero and Noelle had been paired with each other and both ran it without their Quirks to record times of 7.30 and 7.47 respectively which were the slowest two scores of the day. The final one to go was Shoto Todoroki due to his ice powers would get in the way so he went along and got a score of 3.99 to finish the scoring and Aizawa moved them along to the next test which was inside the building as he was now going to test their grip strength.
This was another set of tests that were varied. Momo actually broke her machine, which she created a replacement for, by using a clamp that she made to max it out. Ruby, Noelle, and Weiss all did it normal with results in the 40kgs as expected from girls without using Quirks while Nero put up an unreadable score by gripping it as hard as she could and then sealing her hand to the machine in that grip, but Aizawa noted it as impressive as she showed that once her hand was sealed to it the only way to remove it was to unseal it or cut off her hand, so he recorded it as 999+ on his chart for the top score.
As for the boys, Izuku accidentally gripped it as he was trying to envision his Quirk and scored a lowly 56kg though it wasn't the lowest for boys not using their Quirks while Asta topped that category by exceeding 100kg on the machine with raw strength alone which was impressive for someone not using a Quirk. The big scores for the boys though were done by Sato, Eijiro Kirishima, and Mezo Shoji with the last one topping the boys at 540kgs by using his normal hand and two more created by his Dupli-Arms Quirk for it.
From there it was onto the standing long jump test. This was going to be another one that certain Quirks really excelled and for some, mainly Ruby, she was actually trying to see if she figure out her distance on a full use of Petal Burst.
At least that was her plan until she reached the test which turned out to just be a test to clear the sand box that they were facing so Ruby was able to do that with ease as she'd shown that she could use Petal Burst for more than 50 meters int eh air. As was a good portion of the class with their Quirks, though Weiss's method was to use her glyphs as stepping stones after her first leap, but the goal was to clear the sandbox in the air.
Several did fail to clear it as they didn't have the Quirks needed to get over it though some did try as hard as they could with Shoji using the webbing between his arms to try and succeed but falling short though of the failures he made it the farthest. The others who didn't clear it were mixed with Asta getting the furthest without any Quirk use, Izuku below average and Noelle the shortest while Nero only just beat her. It certainly wasn't looking good for Izuku and the next one was the side-to-side jumps so not a good one for him either.
In fact, that one turned out to be the one with the least amount of people able to do well on it. Most just didn't have the Quirk for it though some tried with Bakugo managing somewhat, Momo showing her range with a set of small vertical trampolines to help her, and Nero surprising everyone by kicking off her shoes and socks to use her bare feet and show quick side to side cuts by sealing and unsealing her feet to the ground as she did for a decent showing as it was above what a girl her age without a Quirk could do.
However, none was as good as the tiny Minoru Mineta who used his Pop Off Quirk to form two clusters of it on either side and then bounded between them extremely fast for the top score. It was also the only test he'd done anything of note in though it was impressive enough to get attention.
Ruby, Izuku, Asta, Noelle, and even Weiss lacked the skills to accel at this test though as with the others Asta showed that his raw strength without a Quirk was the best for those unable to use their Quirks and with Sato's power up based Quirk there was a good comparison for him. For Izuku it was not going well though and he was determined to get a good score on the next one, the ball throw. That one he was sure he could get a strong score in even if it cost him the use of his arm for the rest of the test.
This was the test that Bakugo had set the mark on with his 705.2 meter throw at the start of the assessment and from the start it was clear that that would be the benchmark. It was also a good challenge for them going in as they all had a distance to aim for right at the start of the test.
At first, however, no one managed to get near it though Momo managing to get over 300 meters with a ball canon for launching softballs, Ruby used her Quirk to gain centrifugal force and throw it over 100 meters from the speed though she did launch the ball off to the side, Weiss just had a glyph catch it and then carried the ball on it as far as she could manage to record a score of over 200 meters, Sato used his enhanced strength to get a score between Weiss and Momo, and so on. It wasn't until Ochaco stepped up that the extreme score was posted.
Ochaco's Zero Gravity Quirk allowed her to remove the gravitational pull on things so long as she touched it with all 5 pads on her fingertips at the same time hence why she'd slapped Izuku as that was the fastest way to ensure she could save him in the exam. For this, however, she just made the ball float and then threw it at the sky. They all watched it go, and go, and go, and go, to their confusion for a good few moments until finally there was a beep on Aizawa's recording device and he held it up for all to see. It didn't have a score; it just had the infinity sign where the distance bar was.
That really got everyone staring and questioning it, as well as why that machine even had that recording feature to begin with as it seemed next to impossible to score it though clearly not impossible as Ochaco had just managed it. It was clearly the winning distance and put the pressure on the rest of them especially Izuku. Still, Izuku had to try and with the remaining tests as they were the distance run, sit ups, and seated to touch which he would not be good at so this was now or never, and the class knew it.
Ochaco for her part just smiled and released her Quirk by tapping all 10 of her finger pads together and saying release after her score, not that it would matter as the reason for the score was that the ball had just gone out of range and, well, into space. She then returned to her classmates to watch the rest of the attempts at this test.
"If Midoriya doesn't do something now then he's the one going home." Ida said as he waited for the power that he saw in the entrance exam while Ochaco just watched nervously as she really wanted the cute green haired boy who'd save her life to succeed as she knew that they'd be good friends if she just could get to know him better but that wouldn't happen if he got expelled. "I would say that Silva is also in the running to come last, but she can't be expelled for some reason."
"I don't care what that prissy princess's issues; I just know that Deku will fail because he's a Quirkless loser." Bakugo said.
"He has a Quirk." Ida said confused. "Did you not hear what he did in the entrance exam? He was one of three kids who destroyed a zero pointer, and he did it with just one punch. The others either required all of their Quirk or aid from other students to manage that."
"Huh?" Bakugo asked.
"Oh, I was one of those." Asta said with a grin as he stepped up next to the fussy bespeckled boy who wasn't as bad as he had seemed in the lecture hall and the angry exploding one. "Yeah my Quirk manifested late so I bet that kid's did as well if you knew him before the exam and say he's Quirkless. Course I had help with the robot, I couldn't have gotten to it without Schnee's help."
"I still think that it was reckless and stupid." Weiss called out from where she was with the other upper class girls. "Though they are right Noelle, you should be in the same boat as that kid."
"Shut it Weiss, I am clearly better." Noelle said with a flick of her hair. "I am a Silva after all."
"So, if he can take it down then he has to have power." Asta continued ignoring the girls.
"He did, I saw it, he saved me in the exam." Ochaco said with a nod. "It was really impressive."
"Huh?" Bakugo said still confused. "Deku doesn't have a Quirk; I still don't know how…"
Before Bakugo could finish there was a gasp as the announcement of 46 meters came from the recording machine. That surprised everyone and they looked at Izuku Midoriya in the circle with a mix of confusion and pity as he was clearly confused himself as he was trying to use his Quirk at last. That was until they saw the cloths around their teacher's neck fly up into the air as he spoke.
"It went that far because I erased your Quirk." Aizawa said his eyes open and glowing red, and his hair stood on end as he use Erasure causing Izuku to turn to him and see the gold goggles around his teacher's neck which he recognized at once. "The judges for this exam were not rational enough. Someone like you should never have been allowed to enroll at this school. You're not the only one who was too reckless, Asta too was stupidly reckless, but he at least doesn't lack control over his Quirk, you on the other hand do not. You and Silva both lack the control for this course, she's here on Nezu's exemption so I can't expel her for this hence why she's going to come penultimate unless she uses her Quirk but you I can expel."
"Wait, those goggles, I recognize them." Izuku said as he quickly processed what was happening only because he saw the goggles which told him exactly who his teacher was. "You can look at someone and cancel out their Quirk. The Erasure Hero, Eraser Head."
"Who's Eraser Head?" Sero asked sounding confused.
"I think he's one of those more in the shadow heroes so to speak." Tsu said as she recalled something she'd heard about a hero with that name. "Not a flashy or overly powerful Quirk so he's more down low but with a Quirk like that he's one of the toughest to face especially because most villains aren't used to not having their Quirk."
"Unless their in the Huntsmen world." Ruby said helpfully. "I, er, had a run in with one who didn't use his Quirk."
"Even in our branch most villains use their Quirks." Weiss said still trying to understand how Rose had gotten a recommendation to U.A. "They just also adapted to using weapons as well because we use them."
"Woah cool." Asta said his eyes stars. "You're…"
"Not another word until I am done with Midoriya, Asta." Aizawa said not looking back at the other reckless idiot that he'd been saddled with this year. "I will test you right after I'm done dealing with Midoriya."
That shut up Asta, and the rest of the class for that matter. All they could do was watch as their teacher looked at Izuku and continued his lecture to the green haired boy.
"You are not ready because you do not have control over your Quirk." Aizawa said speaking directly yo Midoriya, but it was meant to be heard by all and he added in what he had to say about Silva as well. "It is likely why you and Silva are in my class. I can't speak for her Quirk as all I know is that she has no control but a lot of potential hence why Nezu exercised his special exemption for her. You, however, I can because I watched your entrance exam footage. So, tell me, were you planning on breaking your bones again? Counting on someone else to slap you and save your useless body after on attack?"
"No that's not what I was trying to do." Izuku said defensively though it wasn't entirely untrue.
"I only slapped him because of the situation." Ochaco said quietly as Aizawa used his cloths to grab Midoriya and bring him close. "It was the fastest way to save him."
"No matter what your intentions are you would be nothing more than a liability in battle if all you can do is throw a punch and then go down yourself." Aizawa said. "You have the same reckless passion as another overzealous hero I know, one who became a legend when he saved 1000 people by himself. He at least doesn't break so he could still be a hero, you can't be if all you can do is one attack before breaking down. No matter what kind of drive you have you can't succeed like that. With your power there is no way you can become a hero, Midoriya."
At that the class gasped, well most of them did, as it was a harsh thing to say but in a lot of ways not untrue and the class knew it. Noelle knew more than most as she could understand the lack of control and how it meant that you couldn't be a hero, her siblings had been telling her that her whole life, but her arrogance which came out to cover her insecurities was making her less than sympathetic though some like Asta were angry at this treatment. He was actually going to protest but Nero put a hand on his shoulder and shook her head to stop him before he could shout.
"I've returned your Quirk." Aizawa said after a stare down with his student that the rest of the class missed and releasing him while closing his eyes to end his Quirk not caring what was going on with the rest of his class as this was mainly for Midoriya to see if he could listen to what he had to say. "Take your final throw and get to it, you're wasting time."
"I wonder if he gave Midoriya some advice." Ida mused.
"Probably just to start packing." Bakugo said as this would prove that Deku was worthless and not fit to be here just like Bakugo knew he wasn't. "It's what I'd say."
"I dunno, I think it wasn't advice, but the kid seems to get it." Asta mused. "Seems like he can think fast on his feet."
"He has to be if he wants to be a hero." Weiss said. "Recklessness isn't a heroic trait just like our teacher pointed out."
"I'm here, cheri, in case your friend does get ze boot." Aoyama said putting a hand on the brunette's shoulder having already deduced that she had a soft spot for the boy about to go. "Do not worry."
"Er, who are you again?" Ochaco asked confused as she looked at the strange mixed race boy in their class.
"Yeah that's weird." Ruby added having come over to them. "I hope he does well, he seems nice, and he didn't shout at me earlier."
"You ran into me and then landed on top of me before groping me." Weiss said at Ruby's back as Mineta instantly got interest in it. "I had every right to yell and then some."
"I said sorry." Ruby said turning back to look at Weiss. "I didn't mean it."
Weiss just gave a huffing sound and looked away as Momo sighed next to her. Weiss was often like that this, she'd always had a colder, more standoffish, demeanor growing up though nothing compared to Noelle's one, but Momo knew in time she'd get over it. Soon Weiss would have to adjust and while Rose wasn't innocent that girl was at least trying.
"I think he acted like a true hero." Ochaco said turning to the short girl she'd met outside the classroom that morning, Rose if she recalled, to get her attention. "He just needs to get some control over it."
"Yeah I know a thing or two about learning to control a Quirk." Ruby said turning back to Ochaco. "It took me a while to get to this level of control with Petal Burst and even then it wasn't until I got Ozpin's recommendation that I started to really focus on using it more than just as an add on to my combat skills with my sweetheart."
"Sweetheart?" Ochaco asked. "You have a boyfriend?"
"Huh, no, never really been into that kind of thing." Ruby said shaking her head. "I mean Crescent Rose; you'll meet her soon though."
"Er ok." Ochaco said not sure what to say to that so she turned back to the green haired boy who was about to have his official go and hoping that he could do it.
"It's not going to go well." Weiss said to Momo and Noelle while Ruby was talking to Ochaco. "At least you don't break yourself Noelle when you try to use your Quirk. You just can't hit the broad side of a barn."
"Like you know what a barn in Weiss and I'd be much worse if I lost control hence why I'm not using my Quirk." Noelle said defensively. "This is all ridiculous, I shouldn't have to go through all this."
"U.A. is known for its unconventional teaching standards." Momo pointed out. "So, this is expected here and when it comes to field work social status is meaningless. We should remember that."
"Still." Noelle said with a flick of her pigtails as they all continued to watch Midoriya get ready and wondered if he'd use his Quirk or not. "As a Silva this is beneath me."
Aizawa ignored the chatter behind him as he was focused as he watched Izuku Midoriya. It was a waste of a Quirk in his opinion and the only options the boy had was use that power again for an absurd score but forfeit the rest of the tests or he could just admit defeat and accept last place. He didn't deserve to be here, neither did Silva but Nezu had made it clear on her front though at least Aizawa could make it known why she was protected, it might motivate her to actually use her Quirk and start to control it, so he had to single out Midoriya in this test.
As all this was happening Izuku cocked back his arm and began to throw getting everyone's focus. He knew that what his teacher had said, that he needed to control his Quirk in order to become a hero, was true but he wasn't yet at the ability to use it without breaking his body. He needed to work harder to succeed and he would, and he'd start now by doing what he could to both show improvement and still be able to continue with the rest of the tests. In that vein he waited until the last moment and then only activated One for All in his right index finger as he let go of the ball, pushing it with his Quirk to launch it.
The result was a near sonic boom as the ball was blasted into the air just like Bakugo's was without the massive explosion around it. That got everyone's attention at it, even Aizawa's as he stared wide eyed at that and then looked down to his recording device to see that the throw had been 705.3 meters, an oddly coincidental distance, and all with just one finger.
"Mr. Aizawa." Izuku said as he stood up and turned to his teacher, the pain clear on his face but he pushed through it to clench his fist and smile at the pro hero. "I'm still standing. I can still fight."
"This kid, he can learn." Aizawa said with a grin as his test had had finally proven the results he wanted with Izuku Midoriya learning and showing growth, he still had a long way to go and had to actually learn to properly control his Quirk, but this was just what Aizawa wanted and meant that he could end this test with an additional amusement for himself.
"He threw it over 700 meters with just a finger?" Kaminari asked amazed. "What kind of power does with that kid have when he gets control of it?"
"Nice, he's finally showing us his true power." Ochaco exclaimed happily. "I knew that he could do it."
"Yeah you were right." Ruby said with a smile. "He's got a lot of potential once he gets that Quirk under control."
"His finger seems to be broken now though." Ida said adjusting his glasses. "It's like how his arm and legs broke in the exam. Certainly, an odd Quirk."
"It wasn't a very pretty throw, no sparkles at all." Aoyama added sympathizing with the boy as he understood at least part of what he was going through though he'd never understand all that Aoyama had been through. "But some bodies don't hold their Quirks, c'est tragique but vrai."
"Meh a broken finger is easy to overcome." Asta said with a shrug. "That power is strong though, once he gets control he'll be really good though I can take him so long as I can land a hit."
As all this was going on Bakugo was raging at what he was seeing because he was indeed seeing a Quirk in action and one that with just one finger had beaten his score and Bakugo didn't care that it was by .1 of a meter he'd still lost to that damned nerd. What had happened was impossible as far as Bakugo was concerned and he had to get to the bottom of it right away as the explosions went off in his hands and he rushed forward.
"Deku you bastard, tell me how you did that or you're dead you hear me you damned nerd!" Bakugo roared as he charged at Deku causing him to scream but before he could get closer to grab the nerd two bands of the scarf their teacher wore shot out and snagged his forehead and shoulders yanking him to an abrupt halt and he couldn't move as he struggled against the strangely rigid bonds he was in. "What the hell? Why is your damned scarf so strong?"
"Because it's not a scarf, it's a capture weapon made of carbon fiber and a special metal alloy." Aizawa said as he held Bakugo in place, his eyes glowing and hair on end showing that his Quirk was active. "Stand down, it would be wise to avoid making me use my Quirk so much. It gives me serious dry eye and I was only intending on using it twice today not thrice."
That was a big drawback to his Quirk, but it was clearly amazing. Aizawa ignored his class as he released Bakugo and closed his eyes however he did have something to do now that the class was aware of what his Quirk was.
"Get back with the rest of them Midoriya." Aizawa said as he walked forward his eyes closed. "You're wasting time and as I've used Erasure now I am going to test Asta with it. Asta, step forward and face me, this is your true Quirk assessment test."
"Yes sir." Asta said excitedly as he stepped forward while Izuku and Bakugo went back with Izuku staying as far away from his childhood friend turned bully as possible while Bakugo fumed at the change in Deku who was now being comforted by Ochaco and Ruby about his finger. "What do you want me to do?"
"Two things." Aizawa said as he turned to face Asta and suddenly activated his Quirk. "First I want you to try and activate your Quirk now that I'm using mine on you."
"Got it." Asta said as he held out his hand and tried to summon his special sword, but nothing happened.
He tried for a moment longer and really strained himself, but nothing happened. It was frustrating and just like growing up without a Quirk, but he knew he couldn't do it and could tell that the reason why was Erasure.
"I can't sir." Asta said finally giving up and admitting defeat.
"I thought as much, it seems I can prevent its activation which gives me the dominance if you're not using it." Aizawa said much to the confusion of the class as he closed his eyes to rest them and end his Quirk usage. "Now, summon it and get ready, I'll be using my Quirk again the moment I open my eyes, show me what it can do when active."
"On it." Asta said as he held out his hand and the rend appeared in the air next to him as the handle of his sword appeared and he drew it to gasps from basically everyone as only Nero and Weiss had seen it before. "Bring it on sir."
Asta had his sword before him and level at his teacher, but he knew that he couldn't use it normally. For his sword to work he needed to strike the Quirk or the Quirk Factor with the edge of the blade and he couldn't do either with Eraser, the former because it was determined by where Aizawa was looking so next to impossible to aim for, and the later because it would blind his teacher.
However, there was one thing that he could do, he could use it as a shield so as his teacher began to open his eyes Asta twisted the sword and his body to bring the flat of the large blade up and right in Aizawa's line of sight just before his eyes opened and his hair stood on end. Asta had no idea what would happen, but this was the only way he could thing to defend against Erasure with his Anti-Quirk.
The result was that Aizawa was looking at the flat of the sword before him as his Quirk shot out only to be rebounded upon him by the blade. It was a really strange loop as it lasted a split second before Aizawa erased his own Quirk with more force than he'd seen it work on others who he'd used Erasure on. The result of which caused him to stagger back and close his eyes involuntarily as his hair flopped down.
"What the hell!" Most of the class said their eyes wide, even Noelle was staring at what she'd seen the insect do while Izuku completely forgot about the pain in his hand and his predicament as he gaped at what his classmate had done. "What just happened?"
"Woah I did it." Asta said leaping up and holding the sword over his head in one hand which given its size and likely weight was no small feat to those watching him do that.
"Well, that was something, never thought I'd feel the effects of my own Quirk." Aizawa said as he blinked a few times and rose to look normally at Asta. "So, you can reflect a Quirk with the flat of the blade. Interesting."
"Yeah it's cool." Asta said with a grin.
"It would seem that if your Quirk is active you can at least resist mine, something only a heteromorph with a mutant Quirk that is part of their body can do." Aizawa said as Asta lowered it and the moment the sword was down Aizawa suddenly activated Erasure again and this time there was no way to block it and the sword vanished from Asta's hand the moment he was hit with his teacher's Quirk. "But only if I am looking at the flat of the blade. Don't let your guard down but you do have a Quirk worthy of this place. Keep working to improve it, it will be a very useful Quirk as a hero."
"Got it." Asta said taking the lesson to heart as Aizawa began to walk back to the stunned class.
"Throw the ball and let's continue." Aizawa said to Asta as he passed him and pulled out some eye drops to add to his eyes following so much use of his Quirk. "We're wasting time again."
Asta just nodded as he went to the circle and picked up the ball that a robot had brought back. The class was too stunned by all of this to pay attention as Asta tossed it a solid 77 meters without his Quirk which showed his raw strength though he would have been better served by just hitting it with his sword as if it was a baseball bat, but Asta didn't even think of that. Only after that did things resume as Asta went back to the class.
"Dude, what the hell was that." Kirishima said as Asta rejoined them. "That was so manly what you did to Mr. Aizawa."
"Yeah what is your Quirk?" Sero asked.
"Huh oh it's called Anti-Quirk." Asta said as Nero took that moment to go and throw the ball which resulted in a throw of less than 40 meters but as she wasn't using her Quirk it didn't matter to her. "Basically, I can summon a sword that will nullify a Quirk if it touches the Quirk or Quirk Factor with the blade though the blade itself is blunt. I only got it 10 moths ago though and don't know much about it yet, but I am learning as I go."
"So cool." Ruby said coming up to them, Izuku would have joined given his nerdiness over this kinda thing, but the pain had returned to his mind so he went back to fighting through it while still thinking on what he'd done so he couldn't talk to Asta about his Quirk, but he would when he could. "And what did you just do? You didn't nullify Mr. Aizawa's Quirk."
"Well, no because the flat of the blade can reflect a Quirk but only if it is sent at me so it pretty much only works on certain types of emitter class Quirks, at least from what I've tested which isn't that much to be honest." Asta said as Noelle was the last to go with a throw of just over 30 meters before she walked back to the group in silence, and they move onto the next test. "Most Quirks I've seen today won't work like that, but some like Erasure do and therefore I can reflect them either back at the user or away from me. I learned that training with Yuno."
"Oh, right the dude who came top in the exam." Kirishima said as they walked towards the indoor area of the testing grounds. "How'd he do that anyway?"
"Yuno's got an awesome and powerful Quirk called Starforce that allows him to create and manipulate stars in various ways." Asta said. "It's super cool and he can even fire energy from them, that's how we learned I could reflect an emission from a Quirk and what I reflect is twice as strong as what is sent at me."
"Damn that's so manly." Kirishima said. "I gotta see that in action."
"You will, Yuno and I are going to be in the final of the Sports Festival." Asta declared as they got into the indoor area and saw the pads set up for sit ups which told them what the next test was. "Oh, sit ups, alright let's do this!"
Asta got even louder and got ready for some training which he excelled in and set up on a mat as soon as he was done talking. Nero, without any words or prompting, came over to him and held his feet as Asta began to go to town and recorded the highest score of any of them Quirk or not the moment Aizawa told them to begin.
Izuku for his part was with the cute brunette, Uraraka he'd learned, and fought through the pain in his finger to show that he could do it and complete the test which seemed to devolve into more physical fitness than Quirk assessment as it was sit ups and then seated to touch. Neither was he good at, though some of the more flexible girls were when it came to the latter, and the day ended on a distance run.
That one was the big endurance test and basically ended up as a way to see how long some of the class could go with their Quirks with those unable to use a Quirk for it at all falling first. Asta again showed he had the longest endurance here and even outdid a few like Ruby who could briefly use a Quirk to keep herself going past what her body could do without Petal Burst.
The next group to fall were those with Quirks that could boost for a moment to add to normal endurance but not maintain it for longer than what their body could naturally handle. Weiss the best example here as she started using her glyphs when she got tired and kept them up until she couldn't go any further.
The last group though were a mainly those who could keep a Quirk going for a while to maintain their endurance with a three-way race between Todoroki's ice, Ida's engines, and Bakugo's explosions that resulted in Ida winning out between them. However, the one exception to all this was Momo Yaoyorozu, who's Creation Quirk had really been the MVP of the day and allowed her to make of all things a solar powered scooter that she just rode until all were down and finally Aizawa told her to stop and bring it in for the results though he let her continue for longer than necessary so as to compile said results.
"All right time to give you're your results." Aizawa said as they were all finally gathered before him. "I have ranked you all from best to worst and by this point you should all have a good idea of your standings after seeing what you and your fellow classmates can do. The one exception to this is Silva, as I said I can't expel a student here on Nezu's exemption, but you were the worst Silva, if not for how you got into U.A. you would be expelled."
Noelle opened her mouth to object to it but an icy glare from Aizawa shut her up right then and there. She just fumed at being called out like that, but she knew he was true. She had no control over her Quirk and didn't want to use it here, so she hadn't in any of the tests and as a result did deserve to be last but for that protection that she had. Course it didn't help that some of the class were whispering and looking at her with sideways glances, so she was determined to show them the next time they had training which was just what Aizawa wanted in the long run.
"Don't even bother with the lack of control excuse, that won't fly." Aizawa said to Noelle to add to everything. "I get that you're from one of the premier Quirk Knight families and that you're the failure of the family who had to be exiled to U.A., the first Silva to ever attend this school, because of it and the fact that the exemption worked out in your favor this year. You are in my class because I can erase Quirks so you should have used it regardless, especially after I showed what my Quirk was. I will not let that fly again. Tomorrow you will have hero training and I will be reviewing the tapes of those; I expect to see you use it."
"Yes sir." Noelle said with a huff in her voice, but even she couldn't back talk to a teacher.
"Good now while I could go over the results for all of you I won't because you should be able to assess your strengths and weaknesses following this test or else you shouldn't be here." Aizawa said simply. "So instead, I'll just pull up the list."
There was a pause as the students waited for the results. Most accepted that they had done enough to avoid last and so were more focused on where they ranked but Izuku was sure that he'd be last and was really nervous as he'd only had one decent score and bombed the rest of them hard because he couldn't use his Quirk. His worries were interrupted by Aizawa hitting a button on his device and the rankings appeared in a projection before them.

20 - Denki Kaminari
21 - Kyoka Jiro
22 - Toru Hagakure
23 - Minoru Mineta
24 - Noelle Silva
25 - Izuku Midoriya
It took a moment for them to process the results with most amazed or upset at their places. Weiss was annoyed that she was 4th though even she could admit that Momo's versatility ensured that she was going to get the top spot and at least she beat Rose though Rose had surprised her with a 5th place finish though the girl did show that she had had a solid understanding of how to use her Quirk.
Nero was just annoyed that it was her full real name but that was what it was on her transcripts that Nezu had sorted out for her to protect her from having to explain her real backstory, so she had to live with it while Asta was grinning at his result as it was a solid ranking. The only one truly worried was Izuku because he was indeed in last place which meant that he had just failed the test and must face the punishment for it.
He'd tied his hardest but in the end he'd come up short. That meant that he was going to be expelled on his fist day at U.A. His hero journey ended here or at leas the thought so until…
"And I was lying, no one's going home." Aizawa said as he turned off the results his face and voice completely deadpan before he grinned at them though this was the actual lie as he would have expelled Izuku Midoriya, and then immediately reenrolled him as was his way with the students he expelled, had Midoriya not shown promise after a talking to. "That was just a rational deception I used to make sure that you gave it your all in the tests."
"I'm surprised the rest of you didn't figure that out." Momo said as Izuku screamed at the result while the others just stared at their teacher in utter shock. "Sorry, I should have said…"
"Momo don't lie as well." Noelle said as people were looking at her. "You expected it as well, you just know that your Quirk was perfect for this so you didn't think it would happen."
"Well, I didn't expect that he'd actually expel a student." Momo said defensively. "But there was a fear there that motivated me to give my all."
"Well, it was certainly nerve wracking." Sero said.
"Nah I'm always down for a challenge, really separates the men from the boys." Kirishima said with a grin. "And now I know what I have to do to improve."
"I was in the top 10." Asta said with stars in his eyes at his result.
"That's it for the day." Aizawa said interrupting them. "Shower, change, and pick up a syllabus from the classroom before heading home. Make sure you read it over before tomorrow morning as the semester properly starts then."
At that Aizawa walked off as though he briefly came back to give Midoriya a note for Recovery Girl and to tell him to be ready for actual training which began tomorrow. That was it and he proceeded to leave as the students just stood there nonplused by everything.
Still, it was the end of the day for them so they all headed to the changing room shower and change. Izuku also had to go to the Nurse's office and get healed up, but he was still determined, he'd started at the bottom, but he'd use that to motivate him to get stronger. What he'd not expect would be how Ida and Uraraka befriended him after this or how the latter changed Deku for him for the better.
As for the others they did their own thing with most on their own like Noelle and Weiss who had their own takeaways from the day and quickly showered to head home and start their school work that was assigned based on the syllabus. Ruby had wanted to speak to Weiss as a fellow Huntress track hero and apologize for running into her, but Weiss was already gone leaving Ruby to head home alone, Yang and Blake would be late, and start her work after a strange but good first day.
Lastly Asta and Nero headed to their campus jobs as part of their enrollment status as students who couldn't afford tuition. Asta wanted to just wait around for Yuno so they could head back together, but he had work to do so he headed to them with Nero by his side though she didn't say anything to him before she went to her own job, and he continued to his.
Overall, the day had been exciting and productive though Asta still had to get to know his classmates more which would come. Now though he just wanted to get his work done and then see how Yuno's day had gone so that they could compare as their journeys. Hopefully Yuno's day had been as productive as Asta's had been.
Well, there it is, the first day is in the books, Class 1-A has been assessed and now they know where they stand in respect to their classmates so they know what they have to do to improve. For those wondering, the rankings of the MHA characters are canon in terms of order with the 5 new members of the class thrown in where I felt like they'd rank based off how they used their Quirks in the test, or in Asta's case his raw physical power in addition to what his Quirk can do. I know the ending was a bit abrupt but this chapter was starting to run on so I opted to end it here with the MHA characters going off as it was in canon and the others doing their own things but don't worry there will be more bonding to come as we move into the rest of their first week at U.A. Next up, though, is one of my special chapters which takes some liberties as it is time to check in on Yuno and see how his first day went and learn what it is going to be like in Class 1-B for the coming year. They will get some extra focus in this story and the next chapter is the first of those chapters but not the last one as there will be a good few more. Anyway, that is all that I have for y'all so I will leave this chapter off here. If you like this story please follow, favorite (this story and me) to keep up with it and leave a review or PM, your support is what helps motivate me to keep up this work and any questions posed before the next chapter is uploaded I will try to answer. Until next time.
