Chapter 21: Newfound power
Izuku and Shoto tried to stop chuckling while Recovery Girl did a check up on the boys, keyword being tried.
"You two blockheads want to kill each other?! Four broken ribs and half a dozen burns, one a third-degree one." The old doctor glared at them, but that only made the ever joyful Izuku and the surprisingly happy Shoto break out into laughter, "Oh, why do I bother?"
"Sorry, it's just that-" A snicker that quickly turned into full blown laughing interrupted Izuku. The Keyblade Master got a hold of himself after a minute and finished, "That was really, what's the word?"
"Cathartic?" Shoto offered.
Izuku nodded, "Yeah, that was really Cathartic."
Letting out a sigh Recovery Girl groaned, "Ah, boys, young and stupid." As to prove her point the two broke into another chuckling fit, "Well, let's treat those injuries."
Just as the heroine was about to do so the door burst open, "Izuku!" Eri rushed at her Master's side and pulled him into a hug, "You smell like smoked bacon."
"I feel like smoked bacon." Izuku shrugged off the pain from the burns and returned the hug.
"Now, now, Missy, you shouldn't be here, how did you even pass security?" The old heroine asked, not moving to shush the girl out.
"The robots in the hallway? They tried to stop me but Cotton and Kacchan told me to run while they dealt with them." Eri spoke without a care for how that could cause trouble for said blonde and Spirit. To punctuate her statement an explosion echoed along the sound of bowling pins falling.
"Yup, it's them alright. Just hope those two don't cause much of a mess." Izuku snorted, like if that was ever going to happen.
"Are you hurt?" Eri asked while checking Izuku, seeing some red marks that looked painful.
"A little, you should've seen the other guy." Izuku cracked a joke and Shoto unknowingly followed it up.
"I'm right here." He waved, earning more laughter from his new friend.
Eri pouted, "I'll fix you! Cura!" She raised her hands and focused, the spell flowing out a moment later but differently than intended. The ethereal flowers and leaves that covered the room were so vibrant they almost seemed real, the healing energy flooded the infirmary and washed over all the occupants.
Izuku blinked, "Eri, that was a Curaza."
The girl looked at her hands, up at her Master and back, "Oh… Oops?"
Shoto patted his chest and took a deep breath, noticing it didn't hurt anymore, "Thank you."
The small Princess of Heart brightened up, "Welcome!"
Recovery Girl smiled, even she got the pains of age relieved by the little girl's trick, "Good to see there's going to be someone to keep the world from falling apart when I'm gone." She muttered to herself, "You were the one that healed that oaf, right? Thank you sweetheart."
Shoto got confused, doubly so when Izuku and Eri traded a glance and nodded, but didn't let it stop him, "Can we go now? There's the rest of the festival and I would like to watch it."
"Don't worry, after your little stunt the arena will have to be remade from scratch, you have time." Recovery explained with an disinterested wave, those events were always a headache, for her at least.
Izuku sighed relieved, "Thank the stars, I was scared we would lose a match."
"I'll make a quick check before discharging you two."
"Thanks." Both boys nodded. After another five minutes the three youngsters left the infirmary, only to be met with quite a scene.
Katsuki and Cotton were standing over a pile of destroyed robots, taking in big mouthfuls of air. Both warriors noticed their audience and traded a look before speaking the same thing at the same time in different ways, "You saw nothing."
The three laughed.
—
Toshinori still couldn't believe his eyes, the show of power he just witnessed was something awe-inspiring, but what really left him shocked was what he felt. Inside One For All, something fundamental about it changed, and while Toshinori had no idea of what it was, he's overjoyed.
Deep inside he felt Izuku had done something amazing and the boy had once more proved himself better than Toshinori, something that every time made the man want to cheer for the world to hear. Toshinori was never a prideful person, he wouldn't gloat of what he achieved or who he was, so seeing his successor giving one step more than he could was only a matter of joy for the hero.
Inko poked the man's side, "You have been smiling non stop."
"I'm always smiling." Toshinori defended himself, not noticing the odd look in Inko's face.
"I think you are." She muttered, shaking her head Inko pointed out, "Not like that, it's more genuine when you smile without noticing."
Toshinori blushed slightly and scratched the back of his head, "Really? No one ever noticed a difference."
"I'm observant." Inko giggled behind her hand, "So, why are you so happy? I was worried half to death during the whole match."
"I was just thinking how Young Izuku will be an amazing hero."
Inko shot him a glance then looked down, remembering one of the bad decisions she so wanted to change but couldn't, and even after asking for forgiveness it still filled her with guilt. A mother should never give up on her child, no matter how hard it was to watch the world turn against them, doesn't matter how painful it was to see them opening their wings and leaving the nest behind.
Inko looked back up, "Yes, he will."
—
Izuku was the first to reach the bleachers of his class with Eri on his shoulders, Katsuki followed right behind, carrying Cotton under his arm like a ball, and to be fair he was one, Todoroki brought the rear without any extra passengers.
Everybody was staring at them, half in awe, half with a desensitized numbness at the chaos their lives now were.
"What the hell?!" Denki was the first to voice their thoughts, "What was that? Since when can you fly? And do you guys need to go nuclear every time? Also what the hell is Katsuki doing?!"
The bomber scoffed, "Listen here, this sheep earned my respect, so if any of you mess with him I'll kill you!" After fighting a squad of robots and annihilating every last one of them, Katsuki and Cotton had forged a bond in the flames of battle. For that reason the boy could say without shame that the Spirit was in the short list of people he respected.
"That's one question down at least." Hanta shrugged, not even surprised anymore.
The three boys took their seats, one beside the other, with Izuku in the middle and Eri claiming his lab as her throne. Tsu leaned over the chair in front of her, Katsuki's one, and asked, "Izuku, can you explain what happened?"
"Yeah, more or less." Izuku chuckled awkwardly, knowing he wouldn't be able to brush aside his friends' questions anymore, "I saw a chance to help Shoto with some things and decided to take it." The bichromatic boy gave him a grateful nod, "The rest was just I using… another part of my quirk." Izuku resolved to keep the secrets entrusted to him while still not lying to his friends.
"It's called Fa Jin, it's another aspect of my quirk that lets me store energy from fighting, by moving and hitting stuff mostly." Izuku gave a little laugh while everyone stared at him intently, "After getting enough I can use it to boost myself, sending it to my Keyblade I could reach Second Form to use twenty percent of my quirk."
"Whoever thinks Izuku is overpowered raise your hands!" Seeing most of the class doing so made the boy in question pout.
"You're all mean! At least I still have Eri on my side." He pulled the girl into a tight hug.
"What does overpowered mean?" Her innocent question left Izuku at the verge of tears.
Minoru pointed out, "It still doesn't explain how you're flying."
"Oh, that was Float, another part of my quirk." Izuku shrugged absentmindedly.
"Overpower! I call hacks!"
"Shut up Pikachu!" Katsuki finally snapped, roaring at the rest of the class, "Yes Deku has a whole deck of trading cards up his sleeves! Stop crying about it!"
"Thanks Kacchan." Izuku choked a sob at his friend coming to his rescue.
"Shut it Deku!"
Shoto asked Eri, "Is that normal? I didn't pay much attention to it before."
"Pretty much." The princess nodded, completely used to the wonderful mayhem that was her life now.
"Okay then." Shoto nodded and simply accepted it, not having much experience with social interactions or friendship, the latter being practically a new concept to him.
The next match was finally called, Tenya and Ibara walked into the arena, trading determined stares.
From the adjacent bleacher, where class 1-B was, a certain blonde with a rivalry decided to perch himself in the dividing wall. Monoma gave a mocking laughter while literally and metaphorically looking down on his sister-class, "Oh look what we have here, someone from 1-B defying your class? Just know that-"
"Nope!" Itsuka hit him on the back of the neck, making Monoma blackout, "I'm not letting you make enemies of the other class!" She threw him back for her class to grab, "Sorry guys." She bowed before jumping down back to her bleacher.
Izuku blinked, "Hold my unicorn." He passed Eri to Katsuki and jumped on the wall, not noticing all the confused stares his friends are giving each other. Propping himself up with his arms, Izuku saw 1-B was gluing Monoma on a chair with one of the student's quirk, something that made his hand ache to take notes.
"Hey guys!" Izuku's voice got their attention, "You all did amazing out there! And I'd really like it if we could be friends, we all are going to be heroes in the future so we'll have to work hard to protect the world, instead of fighting each other we should work together!"
Behind Izuku's back his friends traded glances, "That's the guy that was afraid of giving a speech?" Denki deadpanned.
"Ironic isn't it?" Kyoka snorted.
After making friends with most of his sister-class, Izuku jumped back down to his seat, the presentation from the competitors was over and the battle was about to begin.
Just when he was about to sit, Shoto extended his hand to Izuku, "You dropped this." He said simply, not noticing the shock on the greenette's face. In Shoto's hand was a Keychain, the chain was a mix of red and blue links alternating between each other and the charm was a six pointed snowflake surrounded by flames.
With an hesitant hand Izuku grabbed it, "Thermal Duality." He whispered.
"What?" Shoto asked, confused from his friend's reaction.
"That's a-" Izuku got cut off by the sound of Midnight calling the match. Snapping his head to the arena, Izuku saw that Tenya had pushed Ibara out of bounds, "What?! It's over already? How? The match just started!" He complained, then slumped on his seat.
Eri reclaimed her throne and patted Izuku's hair, "Here, here, don't be sad."
—
Dark Shadow hummed in thought, their adversary this time was Mina and that was not a good match. The girl was fast and nimble, to say the very least, so if Dark Shadow leaves Fumikage exposed things would go south fast, but how could he fight and protect his other at the same time?
As he reached the end of his train of thought, Dark Shadow had an idea. Quickly whispering it to Fumikage and earning a slightly reluctant but determined nod, the dark entity cackled.
The whip snapped. Mina rushed at Fumikage with her Acid, the raven headed boy kept perfectly still, something a more thoughtful person would've found strange, but the pink colored girl only saw an opportunity to win. Just as she was about to reach him, a wave of shadow exploded from Fumikage.
Darkness coated the boy, from his waist up a layer of living shadow enveloped Fumikage like armor. Flexing the claws over his hands, the yellow eyes over his red ones widened in delight, "That was easier than I expected!" Two voices echoed together, "Oh well, I'm not complaining" The shadow knight shrugged and smirked.
"Oh crap." Mina gulped. She tried to spray a mild Acid on them, only for Fumikage and Dark Shadow to dodge easily.
The fusion left them faster and stronger, but Fumikage could feel the strain it was putting on him, "We must finish this." The dark raven dashed at the girl, earning a yelp as he quickly crossed the distance between them.
He raised a hand and the shadow claw over it grew to the point of completely covering Mina. She threw herself back in hopes of avoiding being caught, but the claw floated away from the arm it should be attached to. It grabbed her before returning to its original position.
The yellow eyes staring at hers blinked, "Didn't know we could do that. Well, by bye!" With those last words, Mina was launched out of the arena.
"No fair!" She yelled before crashing down on the grass.
Fumikage and Dark Shadow separated, the fist feeling draining, they would have to work on that trick later. He sighed, their to-do list only got longer and longer as the day progressed.
Dark Shadow stretched himself to Mina and helped her up, "Nice fight."
"Thanks I guess. Dude, you two are scary like that."
"That's the point!" The living shadow crackled.
—
Eijiro cracked his knuckles a last time, a nervous tick of his, with a deep breath he entered the arena. Across him, Katsuki reached his side, sparks popping on his hands.
"Hey Katsuki. I just want to say, thanks man." His words caught the bomber by surprise.
"What for?"
The redhead gave a sharp grin, "You and Izuku helped me a lot, and you two gave me the kick on the ass I needed. From now on I'm not backing down, I'm not giving up, if the world wants to get past me, then too bad!" Midnight started the match and Eijiro started to Harden his body, it was time to show off his special surprise, "No matter how hard they hit, I'm not gonna break!" With his last exclamation, Eijiro's body transformed.
While training with his bros had got him a taste of what his quirk was really capable off, Eijiro had trained hard to push it further, and it showed. Every single fiber of his being had Hardened, again and again until Eijiro form turned into what some would call monstruos. His skin, his hair, his teeth, his eyes, everything Eijiro had was now hard as a diamond and scarily jagged.
He hit his fists against each other, causing sparks to fly, "Get ready Katsuki, because I'm going all out!" The living bolder rushed at his adversary, every movement accompanied with the sounds of grinding rocks.
Katsuki snickered, "Did you really need the whole speech?!" He threw his hand at the approaching Eijiro, an explosion ripping out of it.
The manly brawler didn't stop when a wave of force slammed into him, he didn't stop when the heat followed and he didn't stop when smoke completely blinded him. No, Eijiro moved forward because there was nothing that could stop his spirit.
Katsuki got surprised by his opponent bursting out of the smokescreen, fist winded back. With a roar, Eijiro sent a hook crashing into the blonde's face that sent him flying. Crashing on the ground then stumbling head over heels, Katsuki only stopped halfway to the arena limits with the sensation of having been hit by a twelve-wheeler.
The bomber pushed, through the pain and his body up, spitting some blood thanks to his now split lib, "Yeah, that's better, Deku still punches harder though." He chuckled. Katsuki then planted himself on the ground, kneeling to have the maximum stability, "Why don't I return the favor!" Cupping his palms, he aimed them at Eijiro.
The redhead hadn't stopped his charge, but he would be lying if he said seeing Katsuki firming himself, his hand lighting up more and more while the pops they produced got bigger and bigger wasn't intimidating. Gulping, he prepared for what sure would be a hell of an experience. When Eijiro was almost upon him, Katsuki set off his attack.
Eijiro never was shot by a tank (even if it was one of the things in his bucket list) but he was sure it would feel more or less like that. If before the force that hit him was a wave, this time it was a tsunami, the heat was like being lit on fire while the smoke burned his lungs. Even then, even with all that, he didn't break.
He kept pushing, one foot after the other, and then the second explosion sounded. Then the third. Fourth. Fifth. Every detonation was more powerful than the last, and even then, Eijiro didn't break, he kept going forward because anything else would be an insult to everything he believed and the friend that was sure he could take it, that he wouldn't break.
But unfortunately, the floor did. The concrete beneath Eijiro was ripped apart, and with it his footing. The boy was sent flying like a missile, in one second he was inside the arena, the next he was hitting the stadium walls so hard he was buried more than two meters into it, leaving an imprint of his body.
"Why does this kinda stuff keep happening to me?" He sighed, knowing the battle was over.
His friend shouted an answer from his spot in the arena, "Because you're the only guy that can say he's tougher than concrete!" Katsuki laughed while forcing himself up. Midnight announced the winner, the person in question going to Eijiro to try prying him from the wall.
After a minute and some fine demolition work, Katsuki thanking Deku in his mind for giving him the idea to research it to improve his rescue work, both boys stumbled their way back to their waiting rooms. Eijiro was in need of new clothes and Katsuki really wanted some water after literally sweating a full artillery attack.
"Unbreakable!"
"What?" Eijiro blinked, surprised by his friend's outburst.
"The name of your new form, it has to be Unbreakable." Katsuki wasn't offering, he was pointing it out as a fact.
Eijiro opened a sharp smile, "Yeah! And just you wait, next time things breaking around me won't stop our fight!"
"You're still gonna lose though." Katsuki snickered, earning a joyful laugh from the redhead.
—
When Katsuki got back to his seat in the class bleachers and crashed into it, Izuku and Tenya had already left to prepare for their duel.
Eri looked up at him and saw how his hands were red with burns and his arms kept spasming. Resolving herself to get it right this time she raised her hand, "Cura!" The healing spell washed over the whole bleacher, again more powerful than intended.
The class stared at Eri, who pouted and glared at her hands, "Why does it always turn stronger than I want?" She whimpered.
Katsuki checked his arms, noticing they didn't feel like falling off at any second anymore, "You're good at what you do kid. No shame in that, if someone complains then they're wrong." The girl brightened at his words.
Mashirao asked Yuga, "What exactly was that?"
The French boy gave a twinkling wink, "Magic!"
"Oh, okay then." To be fair, they all were getting desensitized to all the magical business when Izuku kept manipulating the forces of nature and breaking the laws of physics at the regular.
—
Izuku kept staring at the new Keychain in his hands even while he walked over the arena steps. He could feel it, the bond Izuku forged with Shoto and the latter's new resolve gave birth to a new Keyblade, and it was eager to show its power.
"Stop stressing about it and just do it! Go crazy go stupid! You're a teenager for goodness sake." Nana's words earned a snort from Izuku.
"Wasn't you who complimented I'm too reckless?" He reached his corner of the arena, Tenya already waiting for him. Izuku summoned Heroes Rising, "But you know what? Why not?!" He snapped the Keychain into the main link in the lower end of his weapon, and it changed.
Thermal Duality was like Shoto in the regard of its color palette, it was perfectly split at the middle, with ice blues at the right side and fiery orange-reds at the left. The blade was two flat sides with an open middle, the two converged at the top and the handguard, where a white gem was. The teeth of the Keyblade was half a flame and half a snowflake cut diagonally, the handle was a spiraling white in the center of the two colored square handguard.
Spinning it, Izuku dropped into his stance.
Tenya, for his part, stared at his friend's new weapon, "You are full of surprises Izuku-san, but I will not go down without a fight!" He proclaimed, revving his Engines.
Izuku chuckled, "Good! It's funnier that way."
Midnight saw that both boys were ready and started the match. Both instantly blitzed at the other, a leg and a blade clashed various times in the span of a second, then locked into a contest of power.
Something Izuku had literally radiating out of him, with a push, he sent Tenya stumbling back. With a series of quick thrusts, Izuku pushed the speedster back more and more. Seeing he was on the defensive, Tenya tried surprising the key bearer and threw a punch, which was unfortunately avoided but earned him some space.
Izuku grinned and started shooting spells, Firas and Blizzaras bombarded the arena with even more power than usual, thanks to Thermal Duality. Tenya did his best to outrun the magic thrown at him, but some still grazed the bespectacled boy.
Feeling the energy building up inside, Izuku opened a brilliant smile, "Let's kick things up a notch! Fa Jin…" He spun Thermal Duality and held it with both hands in front of his head, Izuku's aura flared and started changing color, "Duality Blades!" The Keyblade Master threw his arms wide, and the Keyblade parted into two. Along with the aura of Full Cowling, Izuku's hair also turned a scarlet red.
The weapon in his hands turned into two short swords with curved tips. One had a blade made of deep blue ice while the other by strangely solid orange-redish flames, both had white handles with a gem encrusted into the guard of the same color as the corresponding blade. The lower extremity of the swords had a short curved blade of the opposite element.
Izuku spinned the blades before crossing them with a hard hit that sent embers and ice shards flying, "C'mon!"
Tenya had a series of shocks that ended up with his dear friend sporting a new color scheme and two times more armed, "Looks like the surprises just don't end." He huffed with an awkward smile. Deciding to not let his opponent take the initiative, Tenya dashed at Izuku.
The speedster got surprised when the now redhead closed the distance even faster than before. With a double raising slash, Izuku sent a wave of frost and fire at Tenya.
He dodged, only to have a whirlwind of similar attacks following right after. Making his best to avoid the melting heat, freezing cold and the blades that seemed just as sharp as steel ones, Tenya couldn't help but comment, "Are you ambidextrous?!"
Izuku answered while keeping his combo, slashing faster and faster, "Yeah, I just use my right hand mainly because everyone does."
"That would have been good to know earlier." Tenya said while holding a burned cut from the flaming blade Izuku held with his left hand.
"You could've asked!" Izuku pointed out with a grin before leaping and spinning like a ball, smashing his swords on the floor and creating a wave of fire and a burst of ice, "Also, just so you can't say I didn't warned you, I can use fifteen percent of my quirk this way!"
"I feel like I should congratulate you but that only makes my situation more difficult!" The youngest Iida said honestly while trying to put the fire on his pant leg out.
"Well, you won't like this then." Izuku laughed like a kid about to pull a prank, "Fa Jin: Thermal Twinblade!" He locked the short swords together by their lower blades, which fused into one central gem half orange-red half deep blue, while the handles elongated, turning into a polearm. The elemental blades at the tips widened until they were broader than a palm.
Twisting the twinblade over his head, Izuku created a tornado of ice and fire that he quickly slashed in half with a single spin of his body and blade.
"I'm in trouble, aren't I ?" Tenya sighed, knowing things just got more complicated.
"Yup!" Izuku grinned, throwing himself at the speedster with a somersault. What followed was a deadly breakdance by Izuku, that thanks to the power of Thermal Twinblade scorched the earth and froze it over at the same time. With twists, spins and maneuvers that were honestly just him having fun and flexing a little, the temporary redhead cornered Tenya on the limits of the arena.
Feeling he had bullied his friend enough, Izuku asked, "You want to step down or go out with a bang?"
Staring Izuku in the eye, Tenya hardened his resolve and prepared his special move, "I will not give up!"
Izuku's smile was so genuinely filled with pride for his friend, some could even think he wouldn't do what he was about to do, that being using all the energy stored inside him to finish the fight. They would be wrong. Sending all the power to his weapon, Izuku planted the ice blade into the ground.
Tenya used his Recipro Burst, only for a glacier to form ahead of him. Inside it a flame started in the fire blade of Thermal Twinblade and quickly grew. Tenya only had time to brace himself before the frigid obelisk in front of him exploded in a blaze of glory.
When he regained his senses, Tenya was sprawled on the grass. Sighing, he thought how his brother would be disappointed with the defeat, but Tenya admitted that losing to Izuku, who he considered his rival, didn't feel as bad as he thought it would.
"Hey, you okay?" The now greenette asked while offering a hand, which Tenya accepted.
"Nothing too serious, though I think I might have fallen on my back a little too hard." He stretched slightly and felt something pop.
Izuku smiled sheepishly, "Oops, sorry. I might have exaggerated a little bit at the end."
"Be more careful with your adversaries, Izuku-san!" Tenya lectured the other boy while vigorously chopping his arms. They walked away from the arena, Cementos already getting up to repair it again for the nth time that day.
In the middle of the way, Tenya got a phone call. Izuku left him to answer it while chuckling at how his friend vibrated along with his phone for some reason. Picking up his phone, Tenya saw it was his mother, "Hello, sorry for the shameful display, I was outmatched but-" He stopped when the desperate voice from the other side started to say what had happened with his brother.
In a distant city, in the shadows, an fear-striking figure looked down at a blood covered blade.
—
Izuku walked back to his class, only to have it all stare at him like an exotic animal, "What?"
"You look good with red hair." Tsuyu was the first to say something, earning some embarrassment from the young Keyblade Master.
"Thanks."
"That thing was a new weapon?" Shoto asked Izuku when the latter sat down, the rest of the class getting closer to hear his answer.
"Yeah. It's a Keychain, with it I can switch the form of my Keyblade."
Eri, back on his lap, made her own question, "Why do you turn red?"
Izuku shrugged, "It's because Thermal Duality Form Changer it's a Strike type, that red form, it's one that focuses more on physical power and hitting hard." He pulled out his notebook and made some quick drawings to illustrate better for the girl, not noticing some of his classmates looking at it over his head.
"There's other colors?" Eri watched as he made some more drawings and named them. The one with Strike being red and showing Izuku with a big hammer.
"Yes, there's also Guardian, which focuses on defense and counter attacking." Izuku made a yellow drawing of him using a shield, "Elemental, that's a form more focused in magic and range." A blue drawing of Izuku using a scepter, "And Blitz it's good at hitting fast, being fast and high mobility." He made a final sketch of himself using claws, this one green.
"How do you know all that?" Tooru asked.
Izuku blinked, "That's a very good question."
"Do you have more forms?" Ochaco query caused Izuku to blink again.
"That's also a very good question."
"Long story short, you don't know anything." Katsuki rolled his eyes.
Giving a helpless shrug, Izuku nodded, "Pretty much."
"Nothing new then."
"You don't need to be mean about it."
Katsuki pointed at Eri, "You're lucky she's here, or else I would have some words for you."
"What would Izuku look like with blue hair?" Mina asked, more herself than the others.
"Dunno, but he was really manly with red hair." Eijiro grinned.
"Would we even notice him in the Blitz thing? His hair is already green." Hanta pointed out, making the others stop and think about it.
"He shouts for everyone when he does that, and there's also the anime worthy transformation." Kyoka shrugged.
"Can I say that is cool as hell." Minoru said honestly, "And that I really had anime music in my head while watching it."
"You and me both." Denki chuckled.
Izuku looked from side to side, "Why is everyone focusing so much on that?" Shoto was the only one to answer, even if only with a confused shake of the head.
"Teenagers, don't try to understand them, they don't understand themselves." Nana imparted that wise words, only to confuse Izuku more.
Done! A little shorter but that's fine.
Also, Form Changers! Yay!
Yeah this one isn't that heavy, especially compared to the last, but what can you do?
Also, there's some cool art of Izuku's new Keyblade by Komodoensis, join the discord if you wanna see it!
