"Ugh... the sun's gonna set soon, we'll need to build some shelter as soon as possible.", said Andrew, watching the sky melt into hues of orange and purple, dyeing the clouds.
Homura, crouched on the ground, watching a rabbit run off to its den, asked in surprise as she turned towards Andrew, watching him stare into the distant sky: "Eh? You... don't have a house?"
"...Ha Ha, uhm, funny story... I got a bit lost while exploring the area...", responded Andrew, admitting to his blunder with a hint of embarrassment as he scratched his head, trying to laugh it off.
"..."
Should I really rely on this guy?
"...Do you happen to have an axe? If we could chop down some trees, we could make a small hut to stay in for the night.", asked Andrew, turning back to face Homura.
"...Yeah.", she responded instinctively, her hand reaching into the air as if grabbing an object from a pocket, which didn't exist, it was as if she had done this a million times before, the memory engrained into the very fibres of her muscles.
Huh? No, I don't? Since when would I have an axe?
However, as she processed that thought, she suddenly felt like she grabbed onto something wooden, something that wasn't there before.
Eh?
Turning her head, what she saw wasn't air, or a tree branch, but instead she saw a portal, glowing with an ethereal purple as magical energy emanating from it, purple particles swirling out of it like a reverse black hole.
"E-eeeeh?!", yelped Homura as she watched her hand, now swallowed by the portal, jerking it back as if she had touched fire.
"Huh?! W-what is that?!", Homura asked, extremely confused as to what is going on, pointing at the portal which blipped away.
"No way. No way. That wasn't real, right?", her breath hitched as she starred at the now empty space. Her eyes wide in shock, as she blinked it.
Had I always been able to do this?
However, she felt something in her hand, something she had grabbed onto during the few seconds she reached into the portal. Turning to look at it, she was even more flabbergasted.
"Why is there an axe in my hand?! Huh?!"
"Oh? Pocket dimensional storage, eh? Man, I always wanted those... Well, at least that solves our toolless problem." said Andrew, a tinge of jealousy in his voice as he approached her.
Homura, stood there, stunned, her brain still loading as she wondered where the axe even came from. Casually, he reached out his hand towards the axe, asking for it without saying a word, with which Homura just went the flow, handing him the axe as she stared into her now empty hand, her brain still trying to make sense of the information.
I guess these kinds of stuff are normal? Thought Homura, her brain giving up as Andrew got to work chopping down a nearby tree.
Looking at Andrew gradually chip away at the tree's bark, now with nothing to do, her eyes began wandering, looking at the peaceful scenery, the rhythmic chops like a drum to nature's orchestra, the birds singing in the air as the leaves rustled in tune. Soon her watchful gaze fell upon a curious creature, it was a blob, a blob of slime, hopping towards her, stopping at intervals only to jump once again.
Intrigued, as she's never seen this creature before, she casually approached it. Watching the gelatinous blob jiggle, it's reflective yet viscous body tempting her to touch it, it looked like a harmless pudding, so without thinking much, she stuck her finger into the slime.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH", Homura screamed, yanking out her finger, feeling a stinging pain instead of the expected pleasant bounciness, tears of pain were already welling up in her eyes. As if her finger was drenched in acid, her fingernail had already completely melted off, skin dissolved, flesh digested as blood rushed out from her fingertip. Grabbing her hand with the injured finger, she gripped it tightly, as if trying to distract herself from the pain in vain.
M-monster! This thing... it's dangerous, I need to kill it!
Instinctively, reaching back into her pocket dimension, she pulled out an object with her unharmed hand which she was quite familiar with, it felt like an extension to her hand, like a partner that had been through thick and thin with her for a long time: a golf club.
Holding out her golf club, she swiftly lunged back towards the slime again, swinging the club and knocking the slime away like a big golf ball. Crashing into a tree, all the gelatinous liquid splashed off like an object splashing into a puddle, splattering everywhere.
Which would've happened if Homura wasn't such a coward, standing there, gripping her golf club with trembling hands and a stinging finger, swinging it blindly with her eyes closed, as clouded as her thoughts, her heart pounding rapidly.
This usually could intimidate some monster, but the slime is blind. It can't perceive the threat, if Homura even did pose a threat at all.
Watching the goofy fight, still chopping trees, Andrew can't help but giggle at the sight of basically two teddy bears fighting.
Realising, she wasn't hitting anything, she opened her eyes only to see the slime, soaring in the air towards her face like basketball. Screaming, she closed her eyes AGAIN and swung her golf club wildly, like a flailing octopus, which actually knocked the slime away.
"H-help me!!!!", screamed Homura in distress, eyes still closed as the battered slime lay on the ground, a distance away from her.
"Pffft."
"Don't just laugh at me! Help me, Andrew!"
With an exasperated sigh, still grinning from Homura's comedy skit, he swiftly took out his bow with one hand and an arrow with the other, confidently drawing it, he remarked: "Never close your eyes when fighting, Homura.", as he aimed and shot an arrow.
Whizzing through the air, it quickly found its mark, piercing into the slime with a "chuk", sending it hurtling backwards. Following up, he smoothly fired 2 more shots, one penetrating deep into its slimy body, and the other, destroying it. Its slimy fluids bursting onto the ground like a water balloon.
Breathing a sigh of relief now that the dangerous evil monster is smashed to a puddle as she put her golf club back into her pocket dimension, she immediately checked on her badly dissolved finger, guessing she would probably need to bandage it. However, upon inspection, she watched in disbelief as the wound healed before her very eyes, like those regenerating aliens from the movies.
"You good?", Andrew asked, stepping closer to her as she flexed her newly healed finger in awe.
"H-how... does it heal so fast?"
"Time heals all wounds.", said Andrew, smirking, striking a dramatic pose, trying to embody a wise sage which he does not.
"Though it seems like you are a special case, normally wounds wouldn't heal that fast, it normally takes a few minutes, not seconds.", said Andrew returning to his original self.
I guess this was also an ability I had in the past? She thought to herself, touching her previously injured finger.
As the last golden rays flickered through the dense trees, shadows creeped out from their hiding, slowly swallowing the forest. Rabbits hoped back into their dens, squirrels hid in trees, and the chirping of birds slowly faded off into the distance bit by bit.
"Huh... its almost night already, let's quickly build a house before the moon rises.", beckoned Andrew as he walked towards another nearby tree.
"Alright..."
"We have a bunch of wood here, so what I want you to do is craft some tables, chairs and doors, but first, we'll need to craft a work bench in order to craft them.", said Andrew as he demonstrated how to craft it, the wood floating in the air, particles coloured oak brown, similar to the materials, spilled out around it. Spreading apart as the wood quickly disintegrated. Then, in a single burst, the cloud of particles collapsed in on itself, forming the wooden work bench with expert craftmanship, as if he's done this a million times before while Homura watched intently.
"I'll leave the furniture to you, you should be able to craft it yourself. I'll start building the walls of the house.", said Andrew.
As both soon got to work, knocks sounds filled the air, replacing the chirping of the birds. However, after the furniture was done, doors in place, and roof established, there was still one problem: there was no lighting. The house was basically one dark cave.
"Well, that's a problem... Oh! That slime!", exclaimed Andrew hitting his fist onto his palm as if a light bulb had lit up in his head (to light up the house? Get it? Hahahahahhahahahah so funny omg)
"...H-huh?"
"Slime gel can be used as torch fuel.", said Andrew, scooping up the gel on the floor and smearing it onto a stick. Then, in a sharp fluid motion scraped the gel using another piece of wood, causing it to ignite like a match.
"Oh..."
Watching the stars slowly light up in the sky, shadows consuming Andrew signalled for Homura to follow him in and take shelter in the house. Little did they know, tonight, it would be a nothing like they would expect.
