It was a sign of Jade's desperation that she was back at Beck's RV so soon after he had trapped her in there and left her with absolutely no faith in him. She hadn't lied when she'd told her mother that she didn't know where she was going, but there was somewhere safe for Toby to be, at least.
Beck's evident surprise when he opened the door was expected. They had been on the bare minimum of terms recently. After the RV incident, Jade had communicated with him only in clipped text messages, and had then dropped any facade of civility after his actions when Toby was in the hospital. It killed Jade that she couldn't deliver for her son two parents who were at least civil, but the fact was that she was quickly losing faith in Beck as a co-parent. As much as she hated to consider it, Zac's premonition that Beck would run soon enough seemed to grow more likely by the day.
"Jade?" Beck raised his brow. "What's going on? Is everything okay?" His eyes flickered hurriedly between Jade's face, and the baby in her arms.
"Yeah." Jade replied, unable to disguise the sound of the lump in her throat. "I just- something's happened with my house, and… you're gonna have to look after Toby for a while."
Beck's eyes widened in surprise.
"I know you're gonna say that you can't but I don't- I can't live at home any more, I just- and, I'm sorry, there's no daycare any more and- and- maybe I've messed up, but I just couldn't do it any more and-"
"Hey, hey." Beck said soothingly, interrupting her scrambled words by pulling her into his chest. He could feel his shirt dampen from Jade's tears, and tightened his hold, stroking a hand up and down her back.
After a few moments that felt not nearly long enough for the both of them, the pair separated and Jade unsteadily wiped her face.
"Jade, what happened?" Beck asked, his face a mask of concern.
Jade merely shook her head. "I just can't live there anymore. I just can't, Beck."
Suddenly realising that they were still stood outside his door, Beck took Jade's free hand and pulled her inside the RV, this time hoping it gave her a sense of safety.
"Of course I can take him - whatever you need." He said softly, taking the baby out of Jade's arms as if to illustrate this point. "But where will you go?"
Jade shrugged hopelessly. "I don't know." She whispered. She had nowhere to go, but admitting that aloud was just too heart-wrenching.
"Cat's?"
Jade shook her head. "We're not really on good terms right now. And unfortunately I don't have a bunch of kindly relatives like people in stories… but I'll work it out." She smiled sadly. "I always do."
Jade had little faith in this statement, if she was honest with herself. The only thing she knew for sure was that she could not go back to Katherine's house.
Beck was silent for a moment, considering his options, as Jade risked a glance over at the face that was presumably considering excuses to make her leave.
"Wait here one sec." He said finally. "I'll go put him down, I'll only be a minute." He took the bag from Jade's shoulder and made for the door, before turning back a moment later. "Make yourself at home, get some food." He added, almost sternly.
For once, Jade was inclined to cooperate.
When Beck returned ten minutes later, Jade was halfway through a black coffee, acceptably-but-not-deliciously crafted by Beck's machine, and a bowl of ramen. She had to admit, it was a lot easier to think straight when your mind wasn't distracted by the aching pit of your stomach.
Beck smiled as he entered and saw Jade eating, and it surprised her that she felt a burst of pride rather than an overwhelming desire to throw the rest of the food in the trash just to spite him.
"You're staying here." Beck said firmly, whilst her mind was still on food.
"What?"
"I spoke to my parents. You can stay in the house with Toby. In my old bedroom. I'll stay here, but I'll have a baby monitor and I'll be in all the time to look after him."
Jade shook her head. "Your parents hate me Beck."
"They don't-" Beck began to protest, but stopped himself as he saw her resolute expression. He sighed. "They're not the most understanding, sure, but this is important to me. Which means it's important to them."
But Jade was unmoved. "You know I can't accept this, Beck. Thank you, really, but I'll work something else out."
"Jade-"
"We're broken up, Beck, and your parents have probably already celebrated that. I can't live under another roof where everyone hates my guts and makes no secret of it."
Beck felt like crying. "I'm not taking no for an answer. I understand where you're coming from, as much as I can without being you, but we've got to be realistic here. You've got nowhere else to go. I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing it for Toby. This is the best thing for him, not you sleeping in your car and not eating or going to school. I got you pregnant Jade; let me take some responsibility."
Jade looked at her ex-boyfriend, his weary face pleading for her to accept. She was pretty sure that if this was dragged out any longer, he'd get on his knees.
"Okay." She muttered quietly, and Beck let out a loud breath he hadn't even realised he was holding.
He pulled her in for an awkward side-hug, and she secretly relished the warmth, before shrugging him off.
She'd heard what he had said - what he had really said.
He'd said that he was doing it for Toby.
They both know that he was doing it for Jade.
