Peter Parker didn't know what he was doing in Antarctica. Logan had called him urgently. The X-Men had abandoned Gambit to his fate in the freezing cold of Antarctica, with no supplies, no more shelter than what he was wearing. That had been three days ago. Logan and Wade had been on a mission and when they returned Logan sensed the lies and the guilt in the Mansion. Rogue had tried, unsuccessfully, to excuse herself, saying that the X-Men's betrayal of Gambit was justified. As if the X-Men didn't have their own skeletons in the closet! As if they hadn't killed people! As if Rogue herself hadn't destroyed lives, hadn't killed!
When Logan made her confess, she played the victim. But she had destroyed Gambit's belongings and thrown them in the trash!
- He's dead, Logan, he won't need them anymore! - Rogue had told him to try to appease him.
And she had taken Gambit's three cats to the first shelter she had found, because she didn't want anything in the mansion that would remind her of him, anything that could remind her in the future of what she had done. She hadn't even checked to see if that shelter euthanized animals. Logan had called Spider-Man to go find Gambit, because now he only trusted him and Wade. Wade would be in charge of finding the cats so they wouldn't be euthanized. Spider-Man could move through the air with his webs, just like spiders did. It was the fastest way to travel to Antarctica, because Logan didn't want to steal the X-Men's private plane. If they had done that to Gambit, with whom they had never had problems, what would they do with him and all the problems he caused?
Thanks to Logan's sense of smell, they had managed to find Gambit. He was frozen, buried in the snow, completely motionless, and his skin was blue! If it weren't for the fact that they could both hear the weakness on the side of his heart, they would have thought he was dead. Because of the rush, they hadn't brought anything with them, but Peter had wrapped him in cobwebs to protect him from the cold and the snow. It wasn't much, but it was all they had. Quickly, Peter took them back to New York. Gambit's condition was critical. Peter didn't have much hope that he would make it out alive. He took him to Aunt May's house. He had had to leave Mr. Ditkovich's apartment because he had fallen behind on a couple of payments and had returned to live with his aunt. She would treat Gambit well. At Aunt May's house, it didn't matter if you were a hero or a villain, rich or poor, everyone was welcome.
Peter had never seen his aunt so alarmed, but her face was one of pure horror at the state Gambit was in. There were no rooms available, so Gambit and Peter would share a room. Peter prepared the tub with hot water, while his aunt prepared the stove and the blankets in the room. Logan talked to Matt on the phone. Matt was pissed at the X-Men.
The hours passed as slowly as if they were minutes. Peter was tired. Logan's anxiety was making him nervous. They both feared that Gambit wouldn't survive, that they had arrived too late to save him. Gambit and he weren't friends, they were just acquaintances. Gambit worked with the X-Men. Peter knew he was a thief, but ever since he met Deadpool and Logan he had learned not to judge people until he had actually met them. Ever since he first met Gambit, he had been curious about him. What's a thief doing helping the X-Men? And a really good one at that. His skills surpassed Black Cat's.
He had seen Gambit and Rogue flirting. The guy reminded him a bit of Nightwing, because he flirted with everything that moved, but he only had eyes for Rogue. Peter had been envious of how stable their relationship seemed. Now he was scared. What other signs of abuse had he been missing? A person in a healthy, happy relationship doesn't suddenly decide to abandon their partner in the middle of nowhere, in Antarctica! With no one to help them. What if Logan and Wade had decided to delay their return? Peter would have arrived too late to save Gambit and would be dead now.
Were Logan and Wade being harassed like that too? Was Peter romanticizing what had undoubtedly been a hell of a relationship? He didn't feel like being Spider-Man. How was he going to help people if he couldn't help his friends? If he hadn't even seen the signs?
- I thought Gumbo was happy with Rogue, Webs.-Logan said suddenly. Peter knew he was blaming himself. -They argued a lot, it's true, but Jean and I do too. I thought everything was normal. I didn't thinkā¦
Logan stopped talking. Peter understood. Neither of them knew what to say and their minds kept replaying all the encounters they had had with Gambit.
They could only sit and wait.
Wade quickly entered with Gambit's three cats in their carriers. Peter could feel the tension and anger Wade had. He was very quiet. He was in mercenary mode and for the first time, Peter was not in the mood to lighten the mood.
- They were about to be put down.-Wade said.-Rogue told the shelter that they were aggressive.
- What are we going to do now? - Logan asked. - I know you said Gumbo can stay here, Peter. But what happens next? He can't go back to the X-Men. They might kill him the next time they see him!
- Speaking of which. - Wade said. - I called Remy's father. I explained the situation. He's very angry! He'll probably show up here, but until he gets here, you have to keep him informed of his son's condition. This is his number. - Wade handed Peter a piece of paper. - Call him as soon as we leave. He's really worried!
Peter nodded and looked at the piece of paper. He looked at Gambit and wished with all his might that he would wake up. Because if he died, he would be the one who would have to call his father and give him the news of his death. Peter, like Logan and Wade, was tired and hungry. But he wasn't going anywhere. He would stay in that room, until Gambit woke up.
