"This can't be real…"
Nathan looked up from where he sat on the mattress in the jail cell at the sound of Elizabeth's voice. Tears formed in the corner of her eyes as he saw the emotions change across her face. Sadness. Love. Worry. Anger.
Gabe was sitting at the desk when she walked in working on the paperwork that went along with Nathan's arrest. He stood when Elizabeth entered with his hands behind his back. After she noticed Gabe stand, her anger was directed towards him.
"You let Nathan out right now. I don't know what he has been accused of but you are his friend. You know he didn't do this."
"Elizabeth, please," Nathan said as he went to stand near the bars.
Elizabeth walked quickly to where he stood and held his hands through the bars, near their faces. "Oh Nathan… my love…"
"Elizabeth, don't cry. It'll be ok. We will get through this, just like everything else."
"But Nathan, what happened? What could they possibly accuse you of?"
Gabe cleared his throat, "I'll be right outside. Give you two a minute." Gabe walked out to the porch of the office and closed the door to the Mountie office behind him.
"Nathan…"
"It doesn't matter right now what happened. I'm sure Bill or Gabe will explain everything. There is a Mountie transport on their way to take me to Capital City soon."
"But why is this all happening. I know you. This isn't right."
Nathan put his finger below her chin and lifted it lightly to look in Elizabeth's eyes. "I love you, you know that right?" Elizabeth nodded. Nathan looked down at the engagement ring on her finger. She held his other hand in both of hers as she stood there watching him. "I can handle this but I can't bear the thought of the people behind this coming after you next. Maybe we can keep the news of our engagement limited to the people here in town. I don't want to ask you to take off your ring but if others come to town then you could go home and…."
Elizabeth reached out and put her left hand on his lips and the right hand on his cheek. She wasn't sure exactly what was happening but she knew that she wouldn't let fear or regret be part of her life. She tilted her head and smiled at him. "Well you see that won't do."
"I know, it's no ideal. We will be a part for a while and it would be better if you weren't associated with me right now."
"I don't agree at all. Actually I think the opposite is true."
"What do you mean?"
"Nathan, I don't know what is happening. Right this moment, I don't need to. What I do know is that I could never pretend that you aren't my whole life. That you are not my partner in everything and that I am yours. I will stand by you through this. I am not ashamed of the ring on my finger and I will not let those who have accused you make me think that way. After you go to Capital City, we may need to call or write for information. I doubt that Bill or Gabe will get very far in their inquiries. If someone within the Mounties is involved, they will know that Bill and Gabe are on your side in this. I will be the one to get information. When I do, I will not be inquiring as Elizabeth Thornton. I will asking as Elizabeth Grant."
Nathan's eyes went wide. "Are you sure? What about a wedding?"
"I don't need a wedding. I just want you. And I will be here waiting as your wife for you to get home."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Elizabeth, I hate to ask this, but the children. If we are to get married before I leave it will need to be here in the jail. I do not want the children to see me in cuffs. As much as I would like both of them to be here, are you ok with just us and Bill?"
"Yes, I understand. We can have a small ceremony when you get back with the children. Maybe including their adoptions, which I realize we still need to talk about."
"We will have plenty of time when this is all over to talk about that. Can you ask Gabe to come back in here please?" Nathan said.
Elizabeth walked over to open the door, letting Gabe back in the room. After a quick conversation Gabe left to go find Bill as Elizabeth went back inside to wait with Nathan. A few minutes later, Gabe and Bill came back with Henry. Bill answered the question before either of them could ask, "you need two witnesses and Henry was in my office when Gabe came in. We don't have a lot of time."
Gabe walked over and unlocked the cell that Nathan was in. Elizabeth was anxious to put her arms around Nathan but Gabe stood in front of the doorway. Finally he moved and Elizabeth leapt into Nathan's arms, putting her face into his neck. The two of them stood there until Bill spoke.
"I'm sorry to break this up, but if you want to get married, we really need to do this now."
Nathan took Elizabeth's hand and walked over to the desk. Bill had two papers sitting on the desk next to each other.
"I had a marriage license drawn up after the two of you got engaged knowing that we would probably need it sooner rather than later. I don't know if the two of you have talked about adoption for each other's children," Bill said.
"Not directly, but we know we want to all be a family. We wanted to talk to Allie before making any decisions. I know both of us would like to," Elizabeth said.
"I thought so. I don't have time to get that paperwork together before the transport gets here but I do have this. It just gives Elizabeth guardianship of Allie in cases where you are not in town or if something would happen. Especially since we do not know how long you will be gone, I think this is a good thing," Bill said.
"Yes, please. Thank you Bill for everything."
Bill showed the two of them where to sign on the marriage license and the guardianship papers for Allie. After that, Nathan and Elizabeth faced each other holding hands.
"I know that this is not a typical wedding, but I would like to say a few things. I am so happy that the two of you found each other. Elizabeth, I was here after Jack's death and I watched the pain and grief you went through. To watch the two of you fall in love after that was a wonderful gift. I am honored to be part of your family and I wish a long and happy future for you both," Bill said.
"Do you, Nathan, take Elizabeth to be your wife?"
Nathan looked at Elizabeth. Remembering all they had been through and all the things they would go through now. He smiled at her in wonder that she would stand by him and love him through all of it, "I do."
"Do you, Elizabeth, take Nathan to be your husband?"
Elizabeth felt tears starting to come however she tried to hold them in to be strong for Nathan. She didn't want him to worry about her or the children. They would get through this and be stronger for it. "I do."
"I now, pronounce you husband and wife. Nathan, you may kiss your bride."
Nathan lifted Elizabeth's hands and kissed them. He then took his hands and moved them to her cheeks and pulled her in for a gentle kiss, knowing the three men were standing there watching. The two of them pulled back and looked over at them.
"Congratulations Constable and Mrs. Grant," Gabe said with a wink.
Elizabeth laughed and looked at Nathan, "I like the sound of that."
